"My system has changed - no more war, no more conquests," Napoleon announced after his escape from Elba in 1815. In the space of what is now known as the Hundred Days, the deposed French emperor was to demonstrate that nothing had changed. Only forty-six, he still possessed the ambition that made Europe quake at the news of his return to France, the magnetism that made men offering undying devotion swarm to his side, and the military genius that could plan, execute, and very nearly win a brilliant campaign against vastly superior odds. The battle that ended the career of the greatest conqueror of modern times was Waterloo. National Book Award winner J. Christopher Herold, a lifelong Napoleon scholar, tells the story of Waterloo with special emphasis on the emperor's role. But it is also the story of the Duke of Wellington, who led a mixed force of British, Belgian, Dutch, and Hanoverian troops in a masterly defensive operation. Like all military contests, Waterloo was a series of blunders and misunderstandings mixed with acts of heroism, timidity, and endurance. But because it permanently shattered Napoleon's dreams of conquest, Waterloo has a special place as one of the decisive battles in world history.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A must for any Napoleonic library By Steve Hardwick We'll written, heavily illustrated, a concise history of one of the world's greatest battles, I read this book years ago in a library and had to have it in mine.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An elegantly written piece of history...but get a map! By Jill Meyer Okay, here's the problem with "The Battle of Waterloo", by J Christopher Herold. It is a piece of elegant writing, in a small package of 130 pages, but there are no maps in the Kindle version. Why does that matter? Because in a book about a battle - particularly one as fairly detailed as this one - the reader needs maps to understand what was going on; who was attacking where, and when. The "who" and the "where" are almost more important than the "when", at Waterloo, though the battle was fueled by missed connections and miscommunications. If you plan to read this book - and I heartily recommend it - don't do so without ready access to a map or two. The advantage of using a Kindle app on an Ipad is the reader can switch between Kindle and Wikipedia.About the book itself. It's short - 130 pages - but Herold does an excellent job at setting the importance of the battle by looking at the previous year and Napoleon's defeat and exile to Elba. He also looks at the politics of the Congress of Vienna; when the news of Napoleon's escape from Elba and march through France turned into an order for the British and Prussians to meet Napoleon for one final battle.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Easy read about Napoleon's comeuppance By An aging hippie This was a relatively quick read - it begins with a sketch of Napoleon's course to Elba and his return from exile, then zooms in for more detail during the Hundred Days and the Battle of Waterloo. So many things that went wrong for Napoleon, and so many miracles happened for Wellington and Blucher. This could easily have gone the other way. Read this book and find out why Waterloo station is on the Underground rather than the Metro.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. amazing By fluffyredfox This is my first ever Graphic Novel and I have to say I loved it so much I am going to buy the paperback version for my shelf. The detail in the visuals is amazing.Wonderful drawing and illustration by Mick Trimble really brought the story to life visually, allowing JB to concentrate on the very intricate, complex and well thought out story.Papa Sangs is trying to build a gateway to Heaven so he can be…. Well what do all Mob Bosses want! With the help of two Angels, two love struck Zombies, one scientist and a whole load of mobsters’ zombies! All the main characters are strangely connected which comes to fruition right in the last few pages. There is a strong undercurrent of religion in this story but it helped rather than hindered the story flow

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Super Fun!! By Angela I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This is in no way reflected in my opinion of this novel.Bloodfellas is a noir-horror story that is loads of fun. The storyline is twisty and intertwines the lives of zombie gangsters, a fanatical mob boss, angels, cops, and a scientist. Jasper bark combines mobsters and zombies in a way that made me want more! Mick Trimble's artwork is a gritty and colorful throwback to my childhood. Graphic novels aren't my usual genre but with work like this available I may have to check out more of them! A fun 4 star way to spend an afternoon.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Hold it close, like a feather to your chest. By David Dubrow When you see a great dramatic performance, it allows you to appreciate the art as it is, rather than apprehending it as a collection of actors, writers, directors, and crewmembers putting on a show. That’s what makes reviewing the graphic novel Bloodfellas so difficult: I have to open it up to show you the guts of its greatness. There’s some really extraordinary teamwork going on here, from the writing to the art to the color, and in my first reading I could only absorb it all in awe.Not only did artist Mick Trimble expertly portray Prohibition-era America in the characters and setting, but he took us much higher, giving us heartbreaking glimpses of the beauty of Heaven. A Heaven few of the characters will ever reach outside of the use of Ascension, a drug siphoned from living souls by Voodoo priests. The zombies are grotesque without descending to comedic rot and ruin, and the character Slackjaw strikes the perfect balance between brutality and smarts. You can tell by looking at him that he’s not just another undead gunsel: wheels are turning in that decaying brain of his. There are many panels you’ll take long, admiring looks at, especially the end of Dirty Double Crossroader and The Way and the Life. The style is very reminiscent of the Rider-Waite tarot deck, full of little details and symbolism.Typically you don’t notice the coloring in a graphic novel: if it’s good, it’s good. Here, it’s great. Aljoša Tomić gave the zombies ochre eyes, for example, an inspired choice that lent them an even more inhuman look than their bilious skin tones. The flashbacks to earlier history varied from sepia to bleaching, depending on who was telling the tale, and the blood, of which there was a lot, ran in rich, dark red.Writer Jasper Bark penned a story that made me read all the way through once, then re-read to catch what I missed, and then re-read a third time to appreciate the cleverness of the narrative. There’s a maturity in both the characterization and the theology, and he skillfully mixes elements of angelology and Voodoo into a tale that’s both audacious and internally consistent. Each chapter not only plants seeds for the next one, but also reaches into the chapter before it, weaving storylines together in a way that makes the story complex but not complicated. Nobody in Bloodfellas is all bad or all good: they’re imperfect people, warts and all. Even the zombies. And the angels. There’s a kind of dry humor in a line like, “No one mentioned he was a c*cksucker, though,” and Papa Legba’s prediction of, “They’ll be here any minute,” is chilling in its implications.A graphic novel like Bloodfellas doesn’t just happen: it was carefully put together by an extraordinarily talented team, and if you’re lucky enough to get your hands on a copy, hold it close, like a feather to your chest.(Review originally posted at Ginger Nuts of Horror)

Didn't like ending, but still great By Mae Adamson I picked up this book in a used book store and did not expect much-especially since I was unfamiliar with the writer. I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that this book is a cut above. I could see how this book could easily have belonged in another genre, like a full length romantic suspense. The hero was unusual for a Harlequin in that he knew what he wanted and the reader, if not the heroine, was sure of his affections early on.The heorine was an educated woman of the world, so different from most Harlequin heroines who tend to be at the other end if the spectrum and is desparate need of rescuing. This book went off track a bit at the end-too much adventure and suspense-but not enough to stop it from being one of the better Harlequins I have read in a very long time.

Have you ever asked yourself the fundamental questions "where did I come from?", "why am I here in this life?" and "where do I go after I die?" Through the theory of evolution, science would have us believe that we came from nothing, and we will return to nothing. Have you ever been uncomfortable with science's version of how we humans came into being here on this earth? How do we argue?...after all, isn't there extensive evidence supporting evolution? Science would have us believe that evolution is no longer a theory, but a proven fact. Evolution must be a proven fact right?; how else could it have made it's way into our core science corricullum in our education system, and been the basis for such blockbuster movies as Jurassic Park, and Ice Age? Contemporary T-Rex answers these questions and more by systematically researching each of the fundamental tenants or underpinnings of the theory of evolution. With almost 200 references, and from a Christian perspective, not only is the theory of evolution exposed as a complete fraud, but is shown to be extremely dangerous to our society in general, and our individual sense of self worth and identity. The main character in the book is non other than T-Rex, or Tyranasaurus Rex, maybe the most famous of all dinosaurs. You'll be amazed what unearthed T-Rex bones reveal, which provided the innitial motivation for this book. What dating techniques are used to date fossils? How old is the earth really? Has the missing link connecting man and ape ever really been found? I invite you to jump in with both feet and an open mind. I hope you will be as amazed as I was through the discovery process that Contemporary T-Rex was for me. Keep your arms and legs in at all times and enjoy the ride!

This book points out the contradictory evidence ignored by "scientists". Well worth the read for these alone, it also illuminates the twisted logic of the high priests of evolution in defending the dogma.

I intended to give it a quick look and give it to a feminist friend of mine. When i started reading it, I was hooked, I finished it laughing out loud and I decided to keep for myself. (I ordered another copy for my friend)I had real fun reading The Wedding. It’s about a nowadays interesting story which made me wonder, think and laugh at the same time. All characters are 3D with Sarah an exceptional woman I’d very much like to meet. Art is real good although my taste is leaning to colour, not b&w.I’d definitely recommend it to all, women and men alike. It’s fun.

Even better than the first By Jude ~4.5/5(Contains spoilers, with a warning!)“Some of us are mature… Some of us are childish… But we’re all fourteen.”I rather enjoyed the first volume of this series, and yet this one was even better. I’m in love with this series at this point, and am definitely signed on for the rest of it.It’s stated a lot that the two main characters are mature. And maybe they are more mature for their age, or at least more reserved. But they’re still fourteen. They’re innocent and falling in love for the first time, and they don’t know how to act around their classmates, and they’re still finding out who they are as people. It’s charming and adorable and funny. The main story focuses on Kazuki and Kanata, two mature students who are falling in love and in a new relationship, while pretending in public that they don’t really know each other. There’s some jealousy here, the two of them confiding in each other and talking and waiting till they’re alone to talk for real. They dance together at one point, alone after they’re pressured not to touch during class. Holding hands for the first time, and realizing that their bodies are changing. We also get to see more of Nagai and the teacher, who teases him endlessly. Their relationship is interesting and fun to see develop, but I also really like Nagai’s friendship with Kazuki and Kanata. Nagai tries to be all tough and mean, but he’s really not. He worries and he gets embarrassed. We also met a new character here, Aoi. She’s quiet and doesn’t really talk to anyone and writes everything down in third-person in her notebook. And, [Spoiler!], while trying to discover what love is, she falls for Kanata! When she was first introduced, I was wondering, and hoping. And I’m so excited that we get to see an lgbtq+ character here. Diversity! Yay! [End Spoiler!]This is a quieter series, very slice of life. It’s innocent and sweet, but funny and so adorable. I love it, and cannot wait for the next one.[More of my reviews are available on my blog, Geeky Reading, to which there's a link on my profile.]

One of the first Anglo-Americans to record their travels to New Mexico, Dr. Rowland Willard (1794–1884) journeyed west on the Santa Fe Trail in 1825 and then down the Camino Real into Mexico, taking notes along the way. This edition of the young physician’s travel diaries and subsequent autobiography, annotated by New Mexico Deputy State Librarian Joy L. Poole, is a rich historical source on the two trails and the practice of medicine in the 1820s. Few Americans knew much about New Mexico when Willard set out on his journey from St. Charles, Missouri, where he had recently completed a medical apprenticeship. The growing commerce with the Southwest presented opportunities for the ambitious doctor. On his first day travelling the plains of the Santa Fe Trail, he met the mountain man Hugh Glass, who regaled Willard with stories of his wilderness experiences. Conducting a physical examination of Glass, Dr. Willard provided the only eye witness medical account of Glass’s deformities resulting from a grizzly bear attack. Willard referred to the mountain man as Father Glass, a testimony to his age. He visited Santa Fe, practiced medicine in Taos, then traveled south to Chihuahua, arriving during a measles epidemic. Willard treated patients in Mexico for two years before returning to Missouri in 1828. Willard’s narrative challenges long-accepted assumptions about the exact routes taken by pack trains on the Santa Fe Trail. It also provides thrilling glimpses of a landscape densely populated with wildlife. The doctor describes “a great theater of nature,” with droves of elk and buffalo, and “wolf and antelope skipping in every direction.” With his traveling companions he hunted buffalo by crawling after them on all fours, afterward making jerky out of bison meat and boats out of their hides. Willard also details his medical practice, offering a revealing view of physicians’ operating practices in a time when sanitation and anesthesia were rare. The Santa Fe Trail and Camino Real took Willard on the journey of a lifetime. This account recalls the early days of the Santa Fe Trail trade and westward American migration, when a doctor from Missouri could cross paths with mountain men, traders, Mexican clergymen, and government officials on their way to new opportunities.

Although I don’t have a medical background, I especially enjoyed the descriptions of Dr. Willard’s medical practices. Blood letting seemed to be a major treatment for a variety of ailments. With the exceptions of high rents, certain aspects of Santa Fe hasn’t changed much since the 1820s- nightly fandangos, chile with most meals, and interesting characters. I loved reading the description of Dr. Willard's examination of Hugh Glass, the mountain man - a story so riveting that Hollywood has created a movie about it "Revenant"!I think many readers, not just historians, will enjoy the descriptions in Dr. Willard’s travel journal — visiting a Pueblo Indian village in New Mexico, the social stratification in Mexico, and the practices of a medical doctor in the first part of the 1800s. It's a fascinating book.

By Roy Brown Susan Magoffin and Adolf Wislizenus move over! Rowland Willard is on the trail. Willard travelled the Santa Fe Trail and the northern portion of the Camino Real twenty years before this illustrious pair of diarists. Having recently finished his medical apprenticeship in Saint Charles Missouri, Willard was ready for adventure. He gathered his guns, threw his saddle over his horse and set off for Taos with the annual caravan. After a couple of months in Taos, he continued south to Chihuahua where he spent a little over two years practicing in the community and becoming friends with the local aristocracy. It served him well. With the expulsion of the Spanish he decided it was time for him to move on, and he headed for the coast and back up to Missouri. He claims to have smuggled $2400 but deposited over $7000 in an account at the Bank of New Orleans. That would have been a nice income for just a couple of years. After he retired more than thirty years later, he took his diaries and wove them into an autobiography that not only makes a fine adventure but provides us with insight into the life of the times, stimulates our imagination and brings us face to face with the raw realities of frontier living.Joy Poole worked hard to transcribe Willards’ texts and present them in an intelligible fashion with screeds of footnotes that will thrill the history geek and provide innumerable stimuli for future research.

Better than the first two volumes of Oriko Magia By Ava If you've read Puella Magi Oriko Magica 1 and 2 and are wondering if this book is worth it, then the answer is "yes." This book is SO much better than the first two. It consists of three stories, the first one being about Kirika and the second one being about Oriko (with Yuma appearing). The last one is a short bonus chapter. This book is in a different timeline than the first one, and instead of fighting magical girls, the duo is getting ready for Walpurgis.First off, the artwork is still terrible. Its not as bad as the first two books, but yeah, it's still pretty bad.Kyoko and Mami don't make an appearance in this book (though Mami is mentioned in a passing comment by an antagonist.) This actually works out better, as Kirika and Oriko get some much needed character development. The duo are also in a protagonist role, not an antagonist one, which helps to make them more likable. Kirika is not nearly as one dimensional as she is in the other two books, and while her obsession with Oriko is still there, so are other parts of her life. We learn about her past, including an old friend, and have more background on her before her wish. Oriko wasn't as one-dimensional as Kirika was in the previous books, but she still benefits from this book, as we learn how her powers are causing her problems. We also see Yuma benefit and end up in a better situation in this book than the first two. There are a few negatives about this book, such as the artwork. The antagonist in the second story is kind of weak and the way she's "defeated" doesn't seem in character for what was presented. Despite having a longer story, Oriko doesn't seem to get as much character devolpment as Kirika does in her story. That being said, if you've read the first two books and liked them, then you'll probably like this one. If you've read the first two books and didn't like them, this one still might be worth checking out. I'd recommend this book over the first two easily.

This book contains a detailed description, as well as, fully described general arrangement, and 17 detailed computerized drawings of the propulsion system of a completely "reverse engineered" Flying Saucer. This book goes into great detail, with proven standard formulas in Physics, and general "easy to understand" mathematics to show how this propulsion system can propel a manned space craft, at thousands of miles per hour, from our earths' surface to our farthest planets in a very short time span. This propulsion system is so simple that a high school graduate will be able to understand it's principle. Included in this book is two (2) US Patents including detailed drawings of this "unbelievable" space craft engine, that its simple propulsion principle should have been discovered 200 years ago. This invention will make all other space craft engines obsolete, due to the tremendous power it can generate, and the simplicity in constructing it.

The Answer To The Propulsion Of Flying Saucers: And Ways You Can Be Killed In Close Proximity, by Richard Cary Phillips

About the Author The author, Richard Cary Phillips was born in Starkville, MS, on April 5, 1934. He graduated from Auburn University in 1957 with a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Later he obtained his Professional Engineer's Licenses in the states of Georgia and Alabama. His interest in so-called "Flying Saucers" started in 1968, when a "Flying Saucer" flew down from the sky as he and his son were outside their home, and stopped directly over their heads at a distance of no more than 25 feet. After years of study and research, he "reverse engineered" the so-called "Flying Saucer" and received two (2) patents from the US Patent office depicting the three (3) separate propulsion systems of the so-called "Flying Saucer.'' These patents are located in this book and are as follows: "Ion Impulse Engine" - Patent No. US 7,634,903 B2, and "Ion Repulsion Turbine" No. US 5,005,361, which will produce energy when the propulsion principle of the so-called "Flying Saucer" is utilized to generate high velocity ions to strike turbine blades connected to a common shaft.

In a major reassessment of modern conservatism, noted historian Kathryn S. Olmsted reexamines the explosive labor disputes in the agricultural fields of Depression-era California, the cauldron that inspired a generation of artists and writers and that triggered the intervention of FDR’s New Deal. Right Out of California tells how this brief moment of upheaval terrified business leaders into rethinking their relationship to American politics—a narrative that pits a ruthless generation of growers against a passionate cast of reformers, writers, and revolutionaries.Olmsted reveals how California’s businessmen learned the language of populism with the help of allies in the media and entertainment industries, and in the process created a new style of politics: corporate funding of grassroots groups, military-style intelligence gathering against political enemies, professional campaign consultants, and alliances between religious and economic conservatives. The business leaders who battled for the hearts and minds of Depression-era California, moreover, would go on to create the organizations that launched the careers of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. A riveting history in its own right, Right Out of California is also a vital chapter in our nation’s political transformation whose echoes are still felt today.

Review Praise for Right Out of California:“Olmstead’s vivid, accomplished narrative really belongs to the historiography of the left….ás her strong research shows, race and gender prejudice informed or deformed, almost the whole of American social and cultural life in the 1930’s and was as common on the left as on the right.—The New York Times Book Review"An accessible work that aids in contextualizing the rise of future conservative leaders such as Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan."—Publishers Weekly"A well-focused academic study. Olmsted . . . finds in Depression-era California the crucible for strong-arm policies against farm workers that bolstered the conservative movement."—Kirkus"A major reworking of the Republican right’s origins, this is also a compelling read for anyone interested in California’s outsize importance in America’s recent past."—Darren Dochuk, author of From Bible Belt to Sunbelt: Plain-Folk Religion, Grassroots Politics, and the Rise of Evangelical ConservatismPraise for Real Enemies:“Exquisitely researched and annotated…A startling read of public history.”—Chicago TribunePraise for Challenging the Secret Government:"Olmsted successfully confronts and refutes the heroic myths surrounding post-Watergate journalism."—The Nation"A fascinating study of how, just months after Watergate, both press and Congress quietly retreated to the same silk-gloved handling of the CIA and FBI in the name of national security."—Publishers WeeklyPraise for Red Spy Queen:"One of the most significant works to emerge in McCarthyism studies since the collapse of communism."—The Wall Street Journal"A revealing and compassionate biography."—Booklist

The Grapes of Wrath were harvested by people that needed a unioin By dan a. lewis Olmsted has done a terrific job of bringing to life a period in California history that has been under studied and under appreciated. Her prose is accessible and almost breezy as she paints a picture of the battle between big agribusiness in its early days and the radical union movement in the 1930s. Clearly she sides with the union leaders as they battle the entrenched and committed leaders of the large cotton and other agricultural interest in the imperial and central valleys. She has a hard time confronting the Communist element in the union movement as she limns the leadership as committed and non-ideological. This is not as true for the business leaders who take the Communists at their word and see them for the existential threat they did not turn out to be. But that is an easy judgement to draw seventy years later. The author has a harder time drawing the line between the Conservative movement of the Reagan years and these earlier hard line right wingers. They certainly shared many ideas and enemies, but the Goldwater movement and the Young American's for Freedom are not connected directly to the rural leadership of the previous generation. That does not take a way from the overall strength of the effort. Bravo and a must read for those that want to understand the roots of Modern California and the powerful foes the New Deal had to confront in the western United States.

Splendid History of California Labor Conflicts and the Formation of Modern Conservatism By Peter Richardson This book casts California agribusiness as the state's political crucible in the 1930s. Big Ag (and it was always Big Ag in California) was happy to take New Deal farm subsidies, but it strenuously opposed the federal government's efforts to rein in farm labor abuses. Those conflicts gave rise to the Associated Farmers, a powerful player in state politics; the AF's anticommunist activities, in turn, reached far beyond the fields and eventually touched Hollywood, the University of California, and other key institutions. Along the way, the author links the farm labor story, replete with its civil rights atrocities, to the LAPD Red Squads, Upton Sinclair's 1934 gubernatorial bid, the criminal syndicalism trials of Caroline Decker and Pat Chambers, and the rise of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. For me, the real pleasure of this book is watching the portrait of California conservatism come into sharper focus. I already knew a fair amount about the key episodes, but I hadn't seen the larger pattern they formed. Much of this patterning hinges on the characters the author introduces or features more prominently than do previous accounts. I learned a lot about Caroline Decker, for example, and the author is keen to point out the contributions other women made to the labor struggles of that decade. That Decker's Sacramento prosecutors benefited from Associated Farmer funding and LAPD Red Squad testimony pulls together several important threads. The author also has a lot to say about race. For example, she discusses John Steinbeck's decision to substitute white men for minorities (and women) when fictionalizing the actual events behind "The Grapes of Wrath." I teach that book and film a lot, and I've never doubted that their tremendous success reflected a painful truth: Americans cared about California farm labor abuses only when white Americans became its victims. Steinbeck probably understood that very well; either way, his decision is an important one to acknowledge in the classroom. Likewise, I appreciated the author's account of Langston Hughes's sojourn in Carmel. The local press reports of his visit display the racial hysteria that the Associated Farmers stoked at every turn.Short version: I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in California history or modern conservatism.

James Mullen Every California high school teacher of civics and history, regardless of political leanings, should read this concise but thorough documentation of the oppression of manual laborers, in this case farm workers, by agribusiness, the press and oligarchs only three generations ago. Dr. Olmsted's clearly written treatise on abuse of transient workers during the 19030's, unfortunately, continues around the globe today. The nearly 50 pages of bibliographic notations alone are worth the price of the book.

Alexa and Ian have lost someone dear to them, which is what brings them together. The sex is HOT, the scenes are amazing. And the ending, OMG!!! It does end on a cliffhanger, but I don't think we are waiting long for the next installment. I cannot wait to read what happens next to Ian and Alexa.

This manga has a different outlook, is the best way to put it. But to anyone that loves gore this manga is a must read! It arrived fast, and in great condition! No missing or torn pages!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. super adictive By alex escobar i love manga and i like to read just about anything new that looks interesting. let me just say i cant wait for the 3rd vol. as i couldn't wait for this one. the art work doent slow down in this vol. the story get increasingly suspenful. if u enjoyed the 1st one you'll love this one. just make sure u reread the 1st one first cause theres a whole lotta names u need to remember.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Review - MPD Psyco Vol 2 By Steve I definately enjoyed this manga. It was a quick read but was very indepth and certainly a very intense read. The plot follows the agency as they investigate a string of "suicides" which are all related to each other. After investigating the suicides a link emerges not only between the suicides and the events of the last volume, but also between the mastermind behind the suicides and the protagonists past. This was a phenominally written manga very dark and a very good read. This volume certainly was not nearly as violent as Vol 1 (it was every bit as good though) was but it still contained the trademark scenes of sadistic gore, which makes this brand of horror manga as great as it should be. I love this manga becuase of how clear and how well drawn the scenes are, and how there is never any question to what is going on.I definately think you should pick this one up as it is a phenominal read. You will not be disappointed in any aspect of it; whether you are s stickler for animation quality or plot quality you willbe pleased in every aspect.

Nashville may be the country music capital, but local hockey fans know it as Smashville. The Predators adopted their name from the bones of a saber-toothed tiger found beneath a local building. Craig Leipold first purchased the expansion rights in 1997, and the team quickly built a loyal following. It won twenty-eight games in the inaugural season. Twelve seasons later, the team finished second in the Central Division and appeared in its first-ever conference semifinals. One year later, it finally dispatched its long-standing rival Detroit Red Wings 41 in the opening round of the playoffs. Author Justin Bradford details the fascinating history through unique player anecdotes and perspectives from those involved in the teams rise to prominence.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Finally a history of the Nashville Predators worth the read. By Ben butzbach The Nashville Predators are already a success story, though they do not have a Cup title yet, they have come a long way in a short time in a "non-traditional" hockey market. This book highlights the on and off ice successes of the team.Nashville Predators: The Making of Smashville comes in as a solid book. There are not many books (authorized or not) on the history of the Nashville Predators. The few that are out there- such as "Hockey Tonk" (By former owner Craig Leipold), are good but maybe a little one side. This one comes through and does a great job telling the history, from the viewpoint of those who lived it on the inside for the first 17 years. Justin conducted all the interviews himself- preferring to really get down and get the real story then just using canned quotes. I really enjoyed how open and honest David Poile, Barry Trotz and Craig Leipold were about forming the team, naming the team, and the early years. It's always hard to tell a story when you have a a word limit. When the publisher tells you a book has to come in under a word-count things get left out. Justin does a great job in packing as many stories, facts, and anecdotes as possible into the pages. The book is filled with great pics (H/t Don Olea,Kristen Jerkins, and more) that really help bring back the memories of the team. I think this book is a great read for anyone young or old who is interested in not just the Nashville Predators Hockey Team, or the NHL, but sports in general. It's a great read on what it takes to build a franchise and build a fan base. But you don't have to take my word for it...

In this book, I share my personal story with you and my discoveries about what our bodies, our “selves,” and our relationships need in order to heal from the wounds of life, especially those we sustain in childhood. I wouldn’t wish my beginnings on anyone. There was only one possible way for me to survive the brutality I endured and that was to shut myself down. Essentially, I was incapable of feeling. I was numb. Yes, my story is extreme, but it required me to leave no stone unturned to discover how to restore my humanity. I wanted to be able to really enjoy a long-term intimate sexual relationship with one person, to be able to tune into another’s emotional experience and empathize, to feel good and free in my body and spirit, to stand before groups and speak without fear, to age with vitality and grace, to look forward to adventures. I acquired all of these abilities during adulthood. As a young man embarking upon adulthood, I would have received an F in those subjects.

Healing the Wounds of Childhood: A psychologist's journey and discoveries from wretched beginnings to a thriving life, by Don St John

Review  Inhis book, Healing the Wounds of Childhood, author and psychologist, Dr. Don St.John chronicles his life through the lens of the psychotherapist. His fearlessyet illustrative depiction of his trauma is commendable, as is his journey to athriving life. In many ways, Dr. St. John's courage is a demonstration of thecathartic nature of writing a narrative that extends to the reader. Inaddition, Dr. St. John has an uncanny ability to give you the perspective of achild through their lens and then through the perspective of the adult. Histerminology is user-friendly, while elaborating on several theories of humanbehavior. This girl loves a happy ending and this book delivers, which isperhaps one of the most miraculous parts. It is not only about his own journey, but it is also about the journey and discovery of healing. This book isincredibly well-written and engaging. It might even be beneficial to use in acourse or presentation to demonstrate the theoretical terms that are oftendifficult to exemplify to psychology students.   Story Monsters Ink, April, 2016, Reviewer: Shirin Zarqa-Lederman, MA, MS, LCADC, BCPC, LPC Critique: Impressively well written, organizedand presented, "Healing the Wounds of Childhood" is as compelling aread as it is informed and informative, thoughtful and thought-provoking. Veryhighly recommended for community and academic librarySelf-Help/Self-Improvement collections. Small Press Bookwatch: February 2016, James A. Cox, Editor-in-ChiefMidwest Book Review

About the Author Don St John, Ph.D., is a psychotherapist, somatic-relational teacher, coach, public speaker, and author. He is an authorized Continuum Movement teacher and Hellerwork Structural Integration practitioner and trainer. He has taught and given presentations in the US, Canada, New Zealand, and Brazil. Don brings two general qualifications to the authorship of Healing the Wounds of Childhood. The first, and perhaps most important, is that he has traveled the territory he describes, and he has accomplished an arguably miraculous level of personal change in one lifetime. As a psychotherapist, he works in a style that requires deep empathy and attunement with his patients. It is a level of emotional presence that he could not even have understood or imagined when he began his healing journey. As a Continuum Movement teacher, he teaches fluid movement. Again, this would have been unimaginable to him three decades ago. Thus, he has clearly walked what he talks. His second general qualification is that he has been immersed in both the psychotherapeutic and somatic therapy worlds for the past forty-seven years. His roots were in traditional clinical psychology, but earlyon, he realized from his own experience that the body must be included. Thus began his journey in both the psychotherapeutic and somatic realms. Dr. St John studied Gestalt Therapy at the LA Gestalt Therapy Institute and Neo-Reichian therapy with Drs. Allan Darbonne and Jack Lee Rosenberg; the Psychology of Selves and Voice Dialogue Method with Drs. Hal and Sidra Stone; Hakomi with Dr. Ron Kurtz; Coherence Therapy with Dr. Bruce Ecker; AEDP with Dr. Diana Fosha; and CIMS with Dr. Albert Sheldon and Beatriz Winstanley. He has taken immersion courses and core training in Dr. Sue Johnson's Emotionally-Focused Couple's Therapy. He is certified in Somatic Experiencing, the work of Dr. Peter Levine. He has also studied cranio-sacral therapy and for twenty years has been studying and practicing Continuum Movement developed by Emilie Conrad and Susan Harper. Don's doctoral dissertation, written at the Western Institute for Social Research, focused on the consequences of and recovery from relational maltreatment in early childhood. He lives in Salt Lake City with his wife of thirty years, Diane, co-founder of Paths of Connection. They have been teaching together for twenty-five years.

Weaver Healing the Wounds of Childhood is an excellent introduction to somatic therapies and their history intertwined with psychotherapy. Don St. John, a PhD level psychologist, has a rich background and uses his own history to show how integrating the body into therapy is a key component necessary to change. I appreciated his explanations of stress, how our birth affects us, and how trauma, not just the big T or PTSD, is derived from many experiences including our primary birth experience and our time in the womb. Like him I started out with traditional therapy, like him I began to explore body work and found that this work through the body accentuated my growth, like him I came to a similar conclusion, "I could have stayed in talk therapy forever and would not have explored the depths I have managed to reach once I included the somatic therapies in my healing regimen. As important and valuable as good psychotherapy is, it is not enough." He has an excellent chapter that defines sensory motor amnesia (SMA) and how it equals the chronic tension so many experience. I strongly recommend this book to therapists and the average person on a healing journey.

Once again I"m amazed at the human spirit--how we collectively and individually evolve despite childhood scripts. I was reminded yet again how important it is to pay attention to our emotional tones and how to participate with them at a cellular level through bodywork. I was also thrilled reading about Emilie Conrad's work in Continuum. I too was personally effected by her teachings of the fluid system and have not found anything as profound as the breath, sound and movement Emilie embodied. Don St John's commitment to life a joyous life has inspired me to keep on keeping on. His book is a reminder of our "birthright" to live a healthy, integrated, shame free life. I have deep appreciation for the author and I recommend this book for all those eager to find insights, tools and inspiration for a meaningful life. Bravo!

By Monica Faux-Kota Dr.Don St John has done an excellent job of interweaving his life story with disciplines and practices that he has found to be beneficial for living a thriving life. I appreciate his professional combination of psychology, science, physiology, somatics, abundant love, and spirituality. Along with his personal story.Your childhood could be considered 'normal' and you will still benefit from his belief that we need a "new model" of what it means to be healthy. A holistic model that includes our body fluids, cells, and tissues just as much as our mind, heart, guts, physical & emotional body, and spirituality. And if you are a mother or father you will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of your role. As a mother, and after reading Don's book, I am even more convinced of what I have intuitively known my whole life.In order for children to effortlessly remain in their wholeness, their essence, and thrive as individuals, their mother and father must unbind their wholeness, heal, grow, and thrive while they are living. And it is never too late to start this journey. Our children are made from our cells and body fluids, and while they represent our pure hearts and souls, they are also deeply affected by our personal story of childhood wounds and trauma, our ancestral baggage, and our current ways of functioning. They inherit our inhibitions, to some extent, on an energetic and biological level upon conception. Through our growth we liberate them. Such a noble aspiration: to liberate our children via our personal growth. And Dr. Don St John offers valuable exercises for obtaining this growth in his book.Three words to summarize this book: hope, liberation, transformation
