From the earliest tent-style roadhouses to today’s picturesque roadside lodges, Alaskan roadhouses are a colorful reminder of the state’s past, and many are still an important part of Alaska’s transportation network. From the Valdez-to-Fairbanks Trail to the Iditarod Trail, from snowy routes over the frozen rivers and across the farthest reaches of the northland, the roadhouses were there offering a warm meal and a place to rest for weary travelers. This book shares the history, photographs, maps, artwork, and articles about these iconic Alaskan structures through the adventurous stories of Alaska's early travelers. With photos and excepts from books, newspapers and magazine articles from the turn of the century, exciting tales of the roadhouses are shared by authors such as the Reverend S. Hall Young, Judge James Wickersham, champion dog musher Leonhard Seppala, Iditarod Trail-blazer Colonel William L. Goodwin, and many others. Besides the first-hand accounts of visiting these establishments, over two dozen Alaskan roadhouses are described in detail, and more than two dozen others are showcased in a gallery of old roadhouse photos. For anyone interested in Alaskan history or the old roadhouses which stood along the northern trails, this book will provide many hours of enjoyable reading.

Head out on an Alaskan Adventure By Bill Fikes Drawing on her many years of experience following and reporting on Alaskan Sled Dogs Helen brings to life the mainstays of life on the trails of Alaska, the roadhouses that offered rest, food and companionship to those that struck out across Alaska for whatever their reasons. From mining for Gold, mining for men's souls or just the grand adventure those that took to the trails knew the roadhouses well. While many of the roadhouses are long gone the stories of the men and women that found their ideal life to be one lived in relative isolation in the wilderness live on. Helen has visited many of the remaining roadhouses, knows the owners of many of those still in operation and has a deep understanding of the unique time and place in our history that brought about the existence of the roadhouses. As a standalone or as a companion volume to her works on the Matanuska Valley and Sled Dog racing this is a much anticipated and well received addition to any Alaskan library.Alaskan Roadhouses: Shelter, Meals and Lodging Along Alaska's Early Roads and Trails

Alaskan Roadhouses Offer A Little Known Story of the Past By Diane Shyer Purvis Alaska history remains untold in large part because the heart and soul of its story is not wrapped up in politics and riches, but instead on the priceless exchange of humanity. Hegener has offered us a slice of homemade pie from the modest roadhouse table that provided an oasis for many a wilderness traveler seeking their fortunes in the Last Frontier. Alaska is a land without pretensions. The President of the United States was afforded the same courtesy as a miner down on his luck. Stories that circulated around those roadhouse tables kept the history of Alaska alive and we can thank Hegener for retrieving them to share with all, whether in Alaska or not. This is a work that brings the warmth of the kettle home again.

I have no doubt that the author speaks with experience and that dirty talk can be an enjoyable thing. I know I used to do it often with my girlfriend, but got out of the habit. Well, if it can, than this book is the textbook on it. While it doesn't go into detail what you should say, it talks about the scenarios and times that you should talk dirty. Fun read to see from the outside!

Oddly Normal Vol. 1, by Otis Frampton

From Booklist Oddly Normal, a half witch with green hair, pointed ears, and an aversion to rain, is miserable. She is an outcast at school, and her parents are clueless about how abnormal the Normal family is. When an accidental wish on her tenth birthday goes awry, causing her parents to disappear, Oddly goes to live with her great-aunt in Fignation. In this fanciful world of witchcraft and imagination, Oddly is still not quite normal, but she makes some friends as well as some enemies and, in the process, learns to believe in herself. Frampton's art is refreshingly quirky, with strong lines and bold use of color. The world he creates is full of fun and whimsy, and kids will easily relate to Oddly's struggle to become comfortable in her own skin. This will quickly become a favorite among comics fans. Inoue Otis Frampton, already known for his sketch card work in products such as Topps' Lord of the Rings Masterpieces and Star Wars 30th Anniversary, shows off not only his art but also his love for storytelling in "Oddly Normal Volume 1."Oddly is a little girl who is half-human, half-witch, and fully rejected at school because of her heritage. Frustrated with her life, Oddly makes a birthday wish that results in her having to live in a magical land called Fignation with her aunt. The majority of the book focuses on Oddly's new life in Fignation and her challenges dealing with a new school, new friends, and new bullies."Oddly Normal Volume 1" is a fun read for children and adults of all ages. Frampton displays not only his signature animated style of art, but also his fantastic storytelling skills, which craft a fantastic tale of youthful discovery, and which captivate the reader until the end.My only regret about the book is that it ends far too soon, with the reader craving more Oddly. Fortunately, Oddly Normal: Family Reunion, Volume 2 has just been released, and books 3 and 4 are planned for the future.Otis Frampton has just begun to make a name for himself with "Oddly"; at least two additional series are in the works. While fans of Frampton's work will be disappointed by his retirement from the sketch card world, "Oddly" and future books will create many new fans as more and more people are exposed to Otis' graphic novels and his immense talents. Please do yourself a favor and delve into the world of Oddly. You won't be disappointed.

It Figures By Pop Bop This book starts a bit slowly, with our heroine, Oddly Normal, doing a good bit of whinging about how mean the other kids at school are to her. She has green hair and pointy ears, so of course the gods of middle grade literature demand that she face ceaseless cruel teasing and torment. But wait. A really good graphic novel is lurking just right around the corner. When Oddly gets home from school and is frustrated and disappointed by the complete failure of her 10th birthday party and by her profoundly gormless parents, she wishes they would disappear, and they do, (along with Oddly's house and every scrap of normalcy surrounding her). In their place, Oddly's whacked out, wizardly, Auntie arrives from Fignation. Fignation is the alternate universe in which figments of imagination live. Auntie sends Oddly there to recuperate while she figures out how to find and return Oddly's parents. (Oddly's Mom is a witch from Fignation. Her Dad is a normal Earth guy. Oddly is a half-witch who knows about Fignation but was never allowed by her parents to go there.)Here's the really good part. This book leaves the tracks and starts getting seriously interesting when Auntie shows up. She is a complete train wreck, spouting hilarious little variations on every parallel universe/quantum baloney/magic cliche you've ever read. The book really takes off when Oddly arrives in Fignation and realizes that Fignation is a complicated place so loaded with bizarre stuff that it can't all be crammed onto the page. Plus, the twist irony is that Oddly has to go to middle school in Fignation, and it is as loaded with creeps, losers, mean girls, nerds, and so on as was the case on Earth. Except a lot of these kids have more than one head, lots more than two arms, and crazy wicked skills. The author goes giddily over the top with both the drawing and the dialogue. There are jokes about every style of teacher; there are jokes about every aspect of middle school; there are jokes that are clearly aimed at other middle school magic/romance/drama books. Every time the story or Oddly's situation gets weirder we get to share her recurring catch phrase - "It figures".The upshot is that when Oddly Normal is transported from Earth to Fignation this book is transformed from a good-natured predictable mild middle school drama into a rollicking head trip. (Just to drive that point home, the first part of the book is sepia tinted with a lot of muted browns, greens and even grays. Competent, but snooze worthy. When Oddly lands in Fignation the book goes to garish neon and then settles down to crisp bold bright coloring.) This is a funny, sly and knowing book. There is broad humor and some remarkably sophisticated humor. There are jokes inside jokes. It's never really edgy, but there are touches of vinegar and some pithy little jabs. It is one of the few graphic novels for younger readers that rewards multiple readings, since there is a lot funny stuff tucked away around the edges of each panel. This book was originally published in single issue form as Oddly Normal #1 through #5. All five of those were collected in a paperback edition in 2006. The collection received a number of high profile awards. That "Volume 1" has been reissued by Image Comics in 2015. I can't speak to the 2006 version, but the 2015 book is gorgeous. For what it's worth, Volume 1 ends abruptly; it is after all a collection of just the first five issues of a series. There is a Volume 2 that was published in 2007. It looks like this 2015 Image Comics volume marks a reboot of the whole Oddly Normal story, and I hope we continue with a reissue of Volume 2 and then new volumes as well. Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

A Social Outcast in Not One, but Two Worlds By Matthew Ries The trials of middle school are front and center in Otis Frampton’s “Oddly Normal, Book 1”, but unlike other young adult reads the young protagonist just can’t find any luck in either our world or the realm of Fignation. As a fan of Otis’ artwork I’ve known about his relaunch of this series for a few years, but I wish I had grabbed this book earlier than I did.Oddly Normal, the non-magical daughter of a witch and a normal human, has green hair and pointy ears thus subjecting her to middle school hell. On her 10th birthday she wishes her parents would go away and strangely enough they do. Whisked away to her mother’s home realm of Fignation by her Great Aunt, Oddly enters a new school and finds herself back in middle school hell because instead of being a half-witch in the real world, she is a half-human in the imaginary world. And then she barely escapes an attack on her life. This young adult graphic novel is not another story in which an social outcast goes to a new school and becomes someone special, it’s a story in which a social outcast goes to a new school and is still a social outcast…if not worse. The artwork and story by Frampton are both excellent and will draw any young reader in because at some time in our younger days we felt like social outcasts, but it seems that poor Oddly has it worse and that makes the reader want to see her overcome things and discover what happened to her parents. If the ‘young adult’ tag puts you off personally from reading “Oddly Normal” then direct a middle school that you know towards this book and let them follow along as a green-haired, pointy-eared 10 year old tries to navigate not one, but two middle schools in which doesn’t fit.

Volume 26 basically boils down to one long battle between the Claymores and Pricilla and the awakened beings. Without giving any spoilers, Raki makes an amazing appearance and the book ends on a pretty good cliffhanger. I can't give this volume a full 5 stars just because, after 26 volumes, everything is becoming a little tired. The awakened beings just get more and more powerful, the Claymores get a few hits in, only for the enemy to somehow power up, etc. etc. As much as I liked this issue, I really feel it is time to put this series to an end. The great storylines that kicked off the series have given out to endless battles with a lot of constant power-up nonsense.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I loved it! By Mandy Claymore is a manga about Yoma who pretend to be human in order to kill and eat the humans. The Claymore are the hybrid of the two stronger faster but still human with the ability to slay the Yoma which they do for a price. They travel from village to village slaying Yoma with nothing but the sword on their back using the Yoma abilities but slowly turning into a monster that they hunt. When the time comes a Claymore will send a black card to another claymore to be slain before the Yoma takes over and so they die as a human. In the 26th Vol the battles continue as the Claymores attempt to take out Priscilla even with the help of the awakened beings they don’t’ seem to be the match. As the battle continues they are pushed to the limits wearing Clare down in the battle as a former 47 she is one of the weakest and just can’t keep up with the others. Things may start going in their favor when they destroy Priscilla t last but it’s short lived because of her regeneration she’s back only this time she’s eaten the Abyssal and is adding the awakened to her body. We do catch a glimpse of what Isley told Raki so maybe he will show up in the last book.I like Clare she’s a sword carrying slayer who isn’t afraid to die charging in risking her life. She's grown a lot in the last several volumes leading up to the battle in the north. After faking her death along with her fellow claymore's she's returned after seven years to battle the Organization. While she may not be the strongest she's determined and unwilling to give up. She's one of those underdog characters you can't help liking. We've seen a little of Raki having grown up into a man who fights yoma he’s been captured by the organization. Clare and Priscilla have been trapped in a ball of flesh locking them both away from the others.I’ve seen all of the episodes on Netflix a few years ago actually binge watched them over a long weekend. While it’s been a while I don’t think the anime has gone this far in the series. I don’t remember the girls taking on the organization which is where the story has turned. It’s interesting learning that the organization which has been creating claymores for a long time may not be the good guys after all. I love the concept for the Claymore the hybrids created using parts from the monsters that they have been created to fight against the Yoma that they created. The art is great it gives me just enough to create the story in my head as I read each detailed page. This is only my 2nd manga so I don’t have a lot to base on but I’m super addicted to them. They are perfect for when I have some downtime or when I feel like reading back to back. I already know that the ending is close as I’m almost done.

Probably one of the most beautiful graphic novels ever made By Illustrator and Concept Artist Probably one of the most beautiful graphic novels ever made. Style is Wrighton-Frazetta-ish but unique, superb craftsmanship. I can't remember seeing anything else that looked like this, this strong all the way through this many pages. Maybe something by Kaluta or Dave Stevens back in the day? Would make a very cool film too, has all the story ingredients and pacing and surprise endings. Very cool gallery section at the back with extra art and the artist's process shots.

As Ferrara himself says it is done in a Wrightson/Frazetta/Schutlz type art style, but it is also all it's own thing. The story is a good supernatural western that slowly reveals who the Dead Rider is over the course of the story. It is a love story and a story about redemption and second chances even for a dead man. I had two minor quibbles with the book, one the Dead Rider's motivation to become immortal was weak. Second the art deserved a larger size. I feel a lot of the line work got lost shrinking this down and then the coloring overwhelmed it at times. Still this book is worth your money and is an enjoyable read.

One of the Best Graphic Novels I've Read By armand cabrera Kev Ferrara?s graphic novel The Dead Rider is exactly what a comic should be; a great story complemented with beautiful art. In this particular instance that art has its creative roots in the Golden Age of Illustration. Ferrara has produced artwork that stands on its own among the best past masters of the medium. The care and attention to craft here is stunning. Everything here is in service of the page turning narrative, from the palettes and layout he chooses for each page, to the graphic design of each chapter head. The characters are well realized and compelling set in an interesting tale that has a satisfying conclusion. There is a small gallery at the end of the book where Ferrara shares some of his decision making processes in putting the story together and shows some of the art he produced that did not make it into the final draft. The Dead Rider is 108 pages and well worth the price.

Read Ebook The City: A World History (New Oxford World History), by Andrew Lees

The City: A World History tells the story of the rise and development of urban centers from ancient times to the twenty-first century. It begins with the establishment of the first cities in the Near East in the fourth millennium BCE, and goes on to examine urban growth in the Indus River Valley in India, as well as Egypt and areas that bordered the Mediterranean Sea. Athens, Alexandria, and Rome stand out both politically and culturally. With the fall of the Roman Empire in the West, European cities entered into a long period of waning and deterioration. But elsewhere, great cities-among them, Constantinople, Baghdad, Chang'an, and Tenochtitlán-thrived. In the late Middle Ages and the Early Modern period, urban growth resumed in Europe, giving rise to cities like Florence, Paris, and London. This urban growth also accelerated in parts of the world that came under European control, such as Philadelphia in the nascent United States. As the Industrial Revolution swept through in the nineteenth century, cities grew rapidly. Their expansion resulted in a slew of social problems and political disruptions, but it was accompanied by impressive measures designed to improve urban life. Meanwhile, colonial cities bore the imprint of European imperialism. Finally, the book turns to the years since 1914, guided by a few themes: the impact of war and revolution; urban reconstruction after 1945; migration out of many cities in the United States into growing suburbs; and the explosive growth of "megacities" in the developing world.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The founding and transformation of cities in history By Amazon Customer The City: A World History by Andrew Lees is a highly perceptive, concise analysis of a huge subject. Lees examines the foundation, growth, and transformation of cities all over the world from very ancient times up to the present. He shows how architecture, public squares, and streets in cities everywhere were shaped by demographic, economic, political, and cultural changes, and how these developments were at times quite local but at other times the result of movements such as the establishment of new nation-states, colonialism, and industrialization. In the 20th century, many cities around the world were badly damaged in wars and then reconstructed, with differing measures to modernize or to restore historic character. The book includes some nice illustrations, a list of useful websites, and an excellent list of other urban histories that would be worth reading. This book should be assigned for reading in university-level classes on world history or urban history, but both historians and individuals interested in urban history should enjoy reading it.

If there’s one thing that New York Times bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Dave Barry is an expert on, it’s raising a daughter.…which means he’s not an expert on much considering the breadth of his knowledge on that subject fills only a single chapter of a book. However, what Dave Barry is good at is giving unsolicited advice on topics he’s definitively not an expert on. In fact, he now has an entire book filled with guidance on things he knows nothing about, including: surviving in the wild, wooing women, cremation, maintaining a scintillating conversation, Justin Bieber, the U.S. Postal Service, enduring the TSA, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and, most obviously, being a professional author. With trademark wit and unmatched insight into the insanity of everyday life, Dave Barry presents a series of hilarious, never-before-published essays on the trials and tribulations of living and laughing in the modern age.

Amazon.com Review P.J. O'Rourke and Dave Barry in Conversation

In the first paragraph of the prologue to his new book, The Baby Boom: How It Got That Way... And It Wasn't My Fault... And I'll Never Do It Again, political humor writer P.J. O'Rourke declares in no uncertain terms that he is "full of crap." Similarly, in the introduction to his upcoming book, You Can Date Boys When You're Forty, humor columnist Dave Barry explains that his book, despite its subtitle "Parenting and Other Topics He Knows Very Little About," is not about parenting.

It's easy to imagine that when these two bestselling authors and longtime pals get together, commiserative silliness ensues. But in this case, no imagination is necessary. We popped in on an email exchange between these two masters of existential trolling. Here's what happened:

Dave Barry: P.J. — I loved The Baby Boom which manages to be both hilarious and insightful. What I want to know is: How did you remember all that stuff? Especially about the '60s. Didn't you take drugs? Of course not! Neither did I! Drugs are bad! But my memories of that era are very purple-hazy, whereas you seem to remember every detail of everything that happened. How did you do that?

P.J. O'Rourke: I made it up. I'm a professional reporter. I'm PAID to make things up. Actually, I do remember a lot about the '60s. Probably because I still know a lot of the same people. And they're still yelling at me about things I did back then. Keeps memories fresh. Sort of like a wife. Just kidding, dear. Sort of like a first wife. And I loved You Can Date Boys When You're Forty. You admit you went to a Justin Bieber concert. Kind of pushing the envelope even for a confessional memoir. You're brave, dude, brave.

DB: I did indeed go to a Justin Bieber concert, because my daughter really really really wanted to go because she LOVED Justin Bieber. It was terrifying. I was in Coral Gables, Florida, in 1992 when Hurricane Andrew passed over and nearly took off the roof of the home in which I was cowering. I understood then why the noise of a hurricane is always compared to a freight train. What it SHOULD be compared to is a Justin Bieber concert. Given the choice, I'd rather sit through Andrew again.

PJO: When I pick my daughters up from school they, for some reason I can't imagine, don't want to listen to Rush Limbaugh, and so they tune the radio to what sounds to me like somebody donated 200 drum sets and an Auto-Tune to a juvenile delinquent corrections facility. But does this mean today's music sucks? Yes.

Read the full conversation on Omnivoracious.

From Booklist Parenting is one of many topics Barry treats to his humorous take on life. The author of I’ll Mature When I’m Dead (2010) recalls taking his 13-year-old daughter to a Justin Bieber concert, where she pitched an invitation to her bat mitzvah onto the stage, where it was then ignored in the ensuing dance frenzy. Barry offers a baby-boomer perspective on a faster-paced life of electronic gadgetry and the Internet and ponders the aging process, including getting mail marketing Medicare and watching Viagra commercials in the company of your children. Barry laments the current lack of manliness and offers detailed instructions on a host of activities a manly man should be capable of doing, such as barbecuing a steak, jump-starting a dead battery, riding a horse, and performing emergency first aid, and offers hilarious musings on the popularity among women of Fifty Shades of Grey (2011). Barry fans will appreciate this latest collection by the Pulitzer Prize–winning humorist. --Vanessa Bush

24 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Genuinely hilarious, as always By Jessica in NE Being a long-time Dave Barry reader (along with Mike Royko and the other "old school" humor set for years), I enjoyed this book.It is straightforward, like his other humor books, "The Taming of the Screw," "I'll Mature When I'm Dead," etc. The general subject matter is "getting older." While there were not any fart or booger jokes that I can recall, there was a long section on the nationwide epidemic of "noodle d**k," 50 Shades of Grey, musing about turning 65, and Justin Bieber/One Direction. It made me laugh out loud at least three times, AND I was reading this at the same time that I had the flu, i.e., feeling miserable. No mean feat! While the majority of the best essays are stacked up front, this is still a book to read. Dave Barry is a master of situational comedy, he does it in print, and he's been doing it for years. Buy it.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Another fine Dave Barry collection, about parenting, aging, travel, and the geopolitics of the middle east By Neurasthenic Dave Barry has been writing humorous essays for decades and has polished his skills to the point that he can effortlessly skewer just about any cultural trend he cares to. Though the title of this collection suggests that it will be about parenting, it isn't really. Only one of the nine essays touches on the subject (and even that one is devoted mostly to making fun of Justin Bieber). The longest essay in the collection is about a trip to Israel. But the collection needed a title, and I suspect his publishers felt that a "parenting" collection would sell best, so here it is.Barry is in good form here; I chuckled out loud many times when reading this book, starting in the introduction. Barry has always been self-deprecating, and it's often funny, and it works well here. It's especially good when he can simultaneously make fun of himself for being a wimp, for example, while mocking those who behave differently for being foolhardy (see his discussion of young men shooting bottle rockets out of their derrières, for example). The book is best when Barry makes fun of things he hasn't mocked before — Justin Bieber, Fifty Shades of Gray, Viagra commercials. It's weakest when he uses the same techniques to tread over ground he has visited before, like trying to help his daughter with her homework, or when he makes fun of his wife for shopping too much. He returns to that last trope repeatedly, and it seems chauvinistic and kind of mean.On balance, this is another excellent collection from an author who has hit his stride. Not a long collection; I read it in about two hours. It would be a good gift for most grownups, especially fathers.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. not as funny as it could be By Stephanie Wedekind The first couple of chapters were vintage Barry...but then I found myself skipping many paragraphs...the whole Israel trip was boring to me. I love Dave Barry, always have, but this book, well, just didn't do it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Totally hot erotic story! By Caitlyn Once I started this story, I couldn't put it down... what a hot and sexy tease this story was. Megan's been a bad girl, and lucky for her she has a hot step brother to take care of that. This was a great story, and extremely sexy and R rated and left me a little wet too. Too bad my step doesn't have this affect on me. I can't wait to read more from Cindy Lust, what a talented author who can totally write a short and hot erotic story that will leave you wanting more.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Relatable, believable, and extremely hot! By Cherry Love the main character's personality--she's extremely relatable and entertaining. Her stepbrother Cody is sexy and the buildup before the scorching sex is pretty hot all on its own (I love a good blackmail story). And it was awesome that Megan was lured into the sex rather than have it just be "bam, let's do it" like so many other stepbrother/stepsister stories are--it makes it much more believable! All-in-all, A+ Ms. Lust!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Clever and titillating By Delta289 Clever and titillating. While the scenes are smokin' hot, I also appreciated that the main character turned out to be less submissive than she led her stepbrother to believe. That devious attitude just beneath the surface really kicked the sexual tension up. Can't wait to read more from this author!

Tremendous book for adoptees who want to grow By Lisa Floyd 20 Life-Transforming Choices Adoptees Need to Make is a book that every adoptee should own. Sherrie Eldridge is an adoptee herself so she understands all the complexities of being an adoptee. She relays her own painful experience of being rejected by her birth mother and tells how that lead her to finding her passion to help orphans. She deals with the heavy issues of rejection, abandonment, grief, loss, and anger and gives adoptees practical tools on how to rise above these overwhelming emotions. She shows adoptees that their feelings of wanting to know their birth families are healthy and valid. She tackles the often emotional issue of reunion with dignity and grace and conveys the message that tremendous growth will come regardless of what happens in reunion. I am also adopted, and I highly recommend this book to other adoptees who want to feel validated and understood in their experience of being adopted. Your darkest moments can lead to your purpose and passion, and you can come out even stronger on the other side. This book will help adoptees do that.

By Carrie Goldman As my daughter enters adolescence, we are seeing more and more how important it is for her to have contact with other adoptees. I eagerly devoured Sherrie Eldridge's new book and I am saving it for my daughter to read as soon as she is old enough, because Sherrie can understand my daughter's struggles in a way that I, as an adoptive mother, cannot. I empathize greatly with my daughter's feelings, but I have never walked in her shoes and felt her sense of Otherness. I am so grateful for the work of adoptees such as Sherrie, because it will make the path easier for the next generation of adoptive families. Well done, Sherrie!

It changed my life! It was the first time I ever thought about many of the things that the book brings up. The best part is the message of hope.. The author doesn't just leave you there in your grime, she walks you through it. I have given this book to my sister-in-law who has adopted and a friend who is adopted and will continue to recommend it.

The employee he hired to provide company to his lovely grandmother turned out to be a tramp who left, leaving his relative alone, but not without stealing some money first. Cesar found the thief, and forced her to go back to Italy, but he does not know that he took with him the wrong sister: Lilly's twin sister Milly. The interesting part is that soon Cesar realizes his mistake, but keeps playing the part. It is funny to see what Cesar does trying to push Milly to confess. However, he didn't know that in the meantime he was also falling inlove. I loved the plot of this story. So will you.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Good Read!!! By Marvalous From back cover:She's really a mouse...but he thinks she's a tiger!Cesare Saracino is bent on revenge! He doesn't realize that the woman he forces back to Italy is not the thief, but her identical twin, Milly Lee.With Cesare watching her every move, the usually mousy Milly struggles to masquerade as her sexy twin. And when desire unexpectedly flares between them, Milly is powerless to refuse Cesare's advances. WIll the truth come out in the heat of passon? What I liked most about this book:Although Cesare came on strong with Milly when he mistakes her for Jilly, he soon realized his error, and started treating her better. Therefore, was able to see what a wonderful person she really was. What I liked least about this book:Although Milly wasn't a pushover, her naivete where Jilly was concern was a bit annoying. Granted they were twins, and therefore Milly owed her sister a certain amount of loyalty, but how can you defend someone who stole from her own parents? And she didn't put up much of a fight when a total stranger showed up on her door step demanding she go to a foreign country (Italy) with him!! She didn't even know his name for goodness sake!!!!However, "THE ITALIAN'S PRICE" was a good book, and I liked it very much.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. she snapped out of her codependency with her twin --3.5 By RomReader Unpretentious heroine pretends to be her twin sister when she was forced by Hero to go back to Italy for her sister's job as companion to his wealthy but ailing grandmother. She does so to protect her sister from Hero's threat of contacting the authorities to prosecute her sister for defrauding his grandmother's checks. Hero soon becomes suspicious that heroine may not be who she says she is and investigates it. But instead of confronting her on his suspicions he succumbs to their undeniable attraction to one another. Heroine's plans to fess up to Hero about her true identity gets waylaid by it. Will their affair help or hinder their problem with heroine's twin sister?I'm straddling the fence on this one but leaning more towards liking it. Heroine was in denial for 3/4 of the book about her twin sister's thefts and long-standing selfishness. She was such an enabler to her sister so much so that she dropped her life in England, lied, & deceived Hero & his grandmother just to rescue her sister. I warmed up to her later in the book when she faced her codependency towards her sister & spoke honestly to Hero. She didn't stay her sister's doormat especially when her sister clearly showed her true colors. I also liked that Hero figured out pretty soon that heroine was very different from her twin & was attracted to her. He was attracted to heroine's unfettered beauty while he remained unaffected by her twin's seductive wiles & sexy fashion.Moderately recommended.

Pedal It!: How Bicycles are Changing the World (Orca Footprints), by Michelle Mulder

From School Library Journal Gr 3-6-These books feature accessible texts, appealing layouts, and global perspectives. Beginning with the difficult-to-ride high-wheelers and boneshakers of yore, Pedal It! launches with a lively history of bicycles. Other chapters discuss how these vehicles work, their various functions (from leisure-time activity to courier or taxi services), and how they are being used today in various countries (to haul goods, help street kids make a living, as ambulances, and even to generate power). Throughout, the author emphasizes that this means of transportation affords health benefits, protects the environment, and empowers people around the world to improve their lives. Down to Earth investigates how youngsters help to produce, prepare, and distribute food. A chapter on "Seeds and Plants" stresses the importance of genetic diversity, highlights types of produce (including worldwide staples such as rice and cassava), and discusses the extra costs-and benefits-associated with organic farming. Three more sections cover poultry raising, other barnyard critters (goats, pigs, cattle, etc.), and working animals (from plow-pulling oxen in China to fertilizer-producing worms). Both engagingly written titles are filled with fun facts and well-captioned photos that provide alluring glimpses into different cultures and locales. Two inviting choices for informing and inspiring curious readers and world citizens.-Joy Fleishhacker, School Library Journalα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist In this colorfully illustrated book, an avid cyclist talks about the history of bicycles as well as their varied uses today. The introduction sets a personal tone that Mulder returns to throughout the book in the many sidebars concerning her experiences and those of her friends and family. Loosely organized, the second half of the book strings together a great many paragraphs on topics such as bicycle taxis in Africa, mail carriers in Britain, bike sharing in cities, bicycle ambulances in Namibia, and bike-powered generators in Nepal and Afghanistan. The quality of the color photographs is quite good, though sometimes the photos don’t directly illustrate the text on the same page. Although much of the information is more anecdotal than statistical, the book’s international focus is valuable, and students will find material here that is both interesting and potentially useful for reports. Grades 4-7. --Carolyn Phelan

Review "Mulder is a bike enthusiast who has written a hugely entertaining and informative nonfiction book about bicycles...Hang onto your handlebars! Pedal It! is a must-read for kids and adults alike. Now go dust off your bike!" (CM Magazine 2013-04-05)"Mulder's evolutionary survey of the bicycle is, like the subject in question, a piece of many parts: a cultural history, a course in mechanics, a soupçon of physics, a spotlight on economic class and a springboard for innovation. In a bouncy, friendly tone, she proceeds roughly chronologically, but has no hesitation to follow a thread or a whim, often in colorful boxed asides...Mulder twines the mechanics of bicycles with cultural phenomenon, the environmental benefits of cycling and even the change in women's fashions...A smart, tangy history of our two-wheeled friend." (Kirkus Reviews 2013-04-15)"The introduction sets a personal tone that Mulder returns to throughout the book in the many sidebars concerning her experiences and those of her friends and family...The quality of the color photographs is quite good...The book's international focus is valuable, and students will find material here that is both interesting and potentially useful for reports." (Booklist 2013-06-01)"Visually appealing...This book would be a great addition to an elementary library as an excellent resource for students learning about the history of cycling and the benefits of using bicycles to man and the environment." (Resource Links 2013-06-01)"An excellent book for upper elementary and middle school students. The history of bicycling and the importance of bicycles in emerging nations are clearly presented. The pictures and drawings are clear. The book contains "Bike Facts," extra information which might intrigue the reader. The author also shows many ways that bicycles are used which might not have occurred to the reader. The book contains an excellent resource list and a very good index." (Southwestern Ohio Young Adult Materials Review Group 2013-06-06)"Opens the door to so many interesting discussions...Filled with beautiful stories and pictures about life in various countries. Children will be amazed by how much a person can carry while bicycling!" (Christy's Houseful of Chaos blog 2013-09-01)"This very cool tome for inquisitive children shares a brief history of the bicycle, with interesting facts...From Nepal to Kenya and many countries in between, bicycles are enabling people to run home-based businesses and give them pedal power!" (The International Educator 2013-12-01)"Packed with facts, colorful photographs, and personal narratives from the author...which adds flavor and authenticity to the text." Read a library copy and since it is so lovely, bought for a bicycle riding friend who is a grown up, who will enjoy all of the well thought out and interesting details. Is bright and upbeat and probably good for children (likely who it is meant for) but fine for adults who like some nice light reading and pictures now and then, has history and information from all over.
