I'm so glad I bought the official english versions, because even though the translation is slightly lacking, I do adore the omakes that are included! They're hilarious, and some even portray a story not central to the storyline at all!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Human Nature at its best!! By Dee H. Ok, this is a wonderful story. The main chic is what Japanese call a "bancho" - the leader of delinquents in school - not the leader of a gang. Anyway, it's really funny, so you have to read it alone or people will think you're crazy. The girl gets thrown out of school because of constant fighting and is put in a school that is for delinquents. There she meets up with her childhood male-friend (age difference like 7 years: he was 13 and she was 6), and now he's one of her teachers. He was also the earlier bancho of her school and so made her also a delinquent. The story unravels around her and her friends and the teacher's still violent behavior. For those of you who have a sense of humor, love of youth, respect for the martial arts and a desire to see human nature at its best, this series is for you. There are 20 volumes in all. So, be patient for the last 2. And as of now, there is no anime version of this story.

I found the title in papers left by my grandmother who died in 1956 and was amazed to find it on Amazon.com!It would take a long time to read cover to cover, but I found some of "my people" right away. Good resource for the Hall family researchers.

Weatherwax There needs to be an emphasis on the fact that this is a "REPRINT" of the original and contains no new research on the Hall families of New England. I bought this book because of the publishing date, and found once I got it it was nothing more than a REPRINT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Not happy

Washington National Cathedral is a Gothic great church built between 1907 and 1990. Despite being built entirely during the 20th century, the techniques used were the same as those used on the centuries-old Gothic churches in Europe. What powered the larger tools and cranes was different, but otherwise, the processes, ordering, and artistic finishing were almost entirely medieval. The last time a building of this magnitude was built using these techniques, cameras did not exist. Images of America: Building Washington National Cathedral divides the 20th century into decades to detail what must be the first published beginning-to-completion photographic record of the construction of a Gothic cathedral.

14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Highly recommended By Anna van D. They say that you can tell a good doctor by the fact that his patients feel better before he even starts to treat them. Well, this is exactly the effect this book had on me - before I even began to lose weight, which I did (and still am). The inner strength of the author's message is incredible. Even despite the fact that the book is riddled with typos like an old trailer with cockroaches, the author's knowledge, experience and her sheer passion about her subject shine through, turning this book into one of the most powerful weight loss tools I've ever come across. If you have a problem with emotional eating or weight management, do read this book. I'm very happy I did. It's jampacked with tips that I personally haven't seen anywhere else. It's done a lot already to change my own outlook. After years of losing the battle against emotional eating, I can finally reclaim my old identity - thanks to this book.I give it five stars simply on the strength of the book's information and message. Their sheer value is such that I find it cruel to remove any stars for all the numerous typos - but they do need to be addressed, the sooner the better. At the moment, I had the feeling that the book had been hastily thrown together with little thought given to any editing or proofreading. There are whole parts of sentences missing in places which makes for a rather painful reading experience. Still I'm very glad I read it. This book has changed me. Thank you, Dr. Kim.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. This book will change my life By agufanig I started reading this book before bed and I woke up wanting to finish it. I really appreciate how it's not just another diet book, the author digs deep into what and how we think to make the reader really engage into WHY he or she may feel the need to indulge. It has helped me so far to be mindful before I eat. I felt hopeless before starting this book and now I feel as if I have a solid plan. I absolutely recommend.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The Mind Game against Binge Eating By Stuart King If you have the problem of binge eating, you are not on your own. According to a Harvard study, more than 7 million Americans struggle with binge eating disorder, yet very few people know exactly how to stop. If you are one of them, read Dr Chronister's book. Unlike many other books that deal with the type of disorders or what you should eat instead, this book starts from the mind. Binge eating is a psychological problem and so you shall start from the mind if you want to solve it. There are many useful tips in this book that will help you to become more prepared in your battle with binge eating.

Only a few years ago, marriage was defined as an exclusive club for heterosexuals only. Today, it has expanded to welcome gay and lesbian couples across the entire United States. Defining Marriage traces the decades-long evolution of marriage through the personal stories of those who lived through it. Writer Matt Baume provides an intimate glimpse into the private lives of those who dreamed of marriage in the 1970s, the survivors of the 1980s, the audacious pioneers of the 1990s, the tireless soldiers of the 2000s, and the champions who won marriage today. Along the way, he explores the individual stories of the people who participated in this revolution, examines what marriage has become, and shows with vivid, compelling personal narratives how the act of defining marriage forever changed the lives and loves of the people who fought to define the institution. As the journey to equality unfolds over the years, Baume finds himself unexpectedly evaluating his own self-contradictory life as a marriage activist with no plans to marry his longtime partner. Over the course of years, the story of marriage is recounted through intimate, revealing conversations with prominent LGBT figures, allies, and grassroots activists. Dustin Lance Black shares the story of how his escape from childhood abuse prepared him to bring hope to millions; Dan Savage recalls his stubborn rejection of the closet at what was then an unthinkably young age; and Andrew Sullivan remembers the call for marriage in the 1980s that earned him enemies amongst conservatives and queers alike. Baume visits with Rob Reiner, who inherited a passion for social justice from his real-life parents and his television family; San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, whose personal principles tested his career ambitions when he stood up to an unjust law and the President of the United States; and Seattle Mayor Ed Murray, a former seminary student who picked up the mantle of LGBT liberation after the death of a friend and mentor. We meet accidental activists thrust into an international spotlight, like Amy Balliett of Join the Impact; Book of Mormon star Gavin Creel; and Clela Rorex, who in 1975 became America's first government official to issue a marriage license to gay couples. As marriage transforms, people all over the country find themselves and their loved ones at a crossroads of history: Molly McKay, who showed up at marriage counters to demanded a license every Valentine's Day for a decade until someone finally said yes; Jenny Kanelos, a small-town girl who mobilized all of Broadway; Juan and Tim Clark-Lucero, forced to race against the clock to marry before their legal window closed. Baume provides rare, behind-the-scenes access to personal conflicts around the national struggle. While furious protestors clash on the steps of the Supreme Court, we are ushered inside to witness the same debate playing out amongst the Justices. Readers witness gay political leaders locked in desperate, emotional struggles to pass marriage bills in the back halls of capitols, and are are privy to the conversations of families as they discover what the shifting landscape of marriage means for their own relationships. From decades past to this moment in history, from halls of power to private bedrooms, from the political to the personal, Defining Marriage is the story of how people from all walks of life fought to change marriage -- and how fighting for marriage, in turn, changed them.

Baume has been an absolutely terrific voice in the battle for marriage equality By Daniel Baume has been an absolutely terrific voice in the battle for marriage equality. I first found him through YouTube and he captivated me with his sarcastic comments, well thought out ideas, and clear, logical explanations. And this book is just full of the Matt Baume many of us have already come to love.

Gronewold Instead of the typical marriage equality "book-umentary", Matt Baume wrote from a very personal, moving, and unique perspective capturing stories from public figures and average folks who lived the marriage equality movement. The author's signature wit and style make this book irresistible.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Get this book! By Ken Clark Baume has brought me up to date on the marriage equality movement. Many gays in my generation have been focused on HIV/AIDS activism and missed the earlier part of Baume's 40+ year timeline. Clearly written, with a sense of humor that doesn't overpower the historic points he makes. Excellent and highly recommended.I'm so happy for all the people who are the beneficiaries of the pioneers that Baume has interviewed. Unfortunately I married a liar, a cheat, and a swindler, but life goes on, and the Obergefell decision has brightened up my existence considerably.

The importance of artillery in warfare grew more and more throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. New developments such as solid cannon barrels improved hit accuracy and the range of projectiles. This Fact File volume focuses on German Artillery during the Great War, when it could be argued that artillery was for the first time the dominant weapon on the battlefield. Wolfgang Fleischer discusses the diversity of artillery developed and used during the First World War by the Germans.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. JRJR Does Black Panther By J. Fields I got this because I'm a Black Panther fan, and also because I'm a big John Romita Jr. fan. Klaus Jansen inks JRJR like no one else can, and for my money, no one else should ink his pencils. The artwork here is very good - but lacking something for me. I was trying to figure out why, and I think the book is too dark. Not in storyline, but just in coloring. The older versions if Black Panther have his suit almost a blue color, with lots of heavy darks and line work. This gives him a depth and shows off the artistic touches much better than trying to keep him all dark with grays/blacks. JRJR's linework needs to be seen, otherwise his style becomes too blocky and sparse, like cardboard cutouts. The rest of the book is gorgeous, but when it comes to the main character, that's who I wanted to see tricked out in JRJR's style. The plot was the best in the history of Black Panther yet. It was nice to have him in his country of origin, instead of finding reasons to bring him to big cities via silly plot twists. I found the tech a little overdone and unexplained, and also the villian was boring and not only named after Inspector Gadget's arch enemy, he had the same gimmicky hand.A solid book for a character that needed it by a good team.Look for the animated series on Netflix or DVD - because it's cooler than the book, and I think JRJR's pics came out better in that format. Plus, Captain America's scene figures in much more in the animated series than his too brief treatment here.

I read a 4-issue miniseries a long time ago, but it didn't leave much of an impression on me because I've forgotten what the story was even about(I think it was about someone, a cop I think, named Casper Cole taking on the role of Black Panther and fighting corruption on the streets in America). Needless to say, it was not the classic Black Panther that this story is about. This Black Panther, T'Challa of Wakanda(a small independent country in Africa that is both a tribal and simultaneously more technologically advanced nation than any other in the world), is WAY different and MUCH cooler! I have read books with T'Challa in them before, but never one where he was the central character of the story. And what a heck of a story it is.The story is an origin story and a suspenseful, political, action-thriller about revenge and power - those who have it, and those who want it. I won't go into the details of the plot, so don't worry, no spoilers here. What I will do is comment on the quality of the story in both the writing and the artwork.First, the writing. Reginald Hudlin, coming from the movie industry, does a nice job in weaving together a history for both the Black Panther and the nation of Wakanda, while telling an intriguing action-thriller that moves at a fast pace which rarely lets up. His movie-making influence can be felt here in the best possible way. His history makes for an excellent transition into telling this story in a wonderfully cinematic fashion. You could see this as a movie quite easily. In fact, Marvel Knights DID make this into an animated movie/motion comic. This leads me to the artwork.John Romita, Jr.(a favorite of mine) contributes heavily to the cinematic look and feel of this book. Although the panel layouts are of the simple, classic kind(there are no panels-within-panels/overlapping panels, or non-square/rectangle panels to be found here), which is typical of JRJR's stuff, there is still that feeling of watching a movie unfold before your eyes. I find that this is the case with much of his works(see "Daredevil: The Man Without Fear", "Kick-Ass", or "The Incredible Hulk v.1: Return of the Monster"). If you aren't familiar with his style, I would describe it as highly tangible. That is to say, it is clearly intelligible. It isn't elusive in any way. It's very straightforward and simplistic. That doesn't mean that it isn't stylized. You could have 100 artists draw the same page, and I could pick his out with ease. His look is both cartoonish and realistic in nature. And his characters have a somewhat blocky nature to them. I happen to like this aspect and think that it works well for him. The amount of detail in his panels is modest, yet he hits all the right notes to sell the reality of the scene. His close-ups, for example, are typically absent of any background elements entirely(aside from a solitary color). He chooses, rather wisely(for HIS style anyway), to emphasize the main focus of the scene; be it an apologetic yet uneasy expression on the face of a prostitute declining a proposition from a customer to allow him to kiss her in exchange for added cash; or the image of two hands - one, the customer's holding out a wad of hundreds, the other the prostitute's, reluctantly outstretched in acceptance of the cash - completing the foreboding transaction of which she had just previously declined. JRJR is a master storyteller. He makes even little things like this palpable. And his action sequences? Top-notch.There were a couple of things that were drawbacks. One was the fact that pretty much all of the non-Wakandans in the story tended to be portrayed in a rather negative light. I understand that Hudlin was trying to establish that Wakanda was not only technologically advanced, but also socially and morally advanced as well. You can agree or disagree with this premise, but although I think Hudlin may have pushed a little too hard sometimes in trying to validate this stance, I respect his position and I believe that it makes sense within the sociopolitical context of this book. The other thing that detracted from this book was the quick ending. It seemed to end a little too fast for me. But I can live with these things because the overall story is a fun read, and the artwork is great. In the end, I really enjoyed this book. I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of either JRJR or suspenseful action-thrillers in general.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Hollywood-ready By David Weigel The Black Panther was created in a late-60s fit of conscience. Marvel Comics writers wanted to add a black hero to the roster; they saw a news item about some "Black Panther" group scaring white people in California. Boom: The new character had a name, albeit instead of protesting racism in America, he was the superpowered king of a wealthy African kingdom.Hudlin has taken a second-tier character and made him fascinating. In his new Panther mythos, the Panther's Wakanda is constantly under siege from arrogant (white) would-be conquerers. One of them, The Klaw, is trying to avenge the shame of his South African forefather, who tried and failed to conquer the Wakandans. He draws blood. He gives the Panther an epic challenge on his home turf. It's a thrilling story that could be turned into a Will Smith vehicle tomorrow. But maybe they'd blow it! Romita's art elevates the story and the action the way some bland CGI never could.

Though the effects of the French Revolution would devastate the navy's efficiency, the French would go on to produce some of the most advanced, innovative ships of the age. By Billy Harris French Warships in the Age of Sail 1786-1862 is the latest in a series of books on the major navies of the Age of Sail and like the other books is crammed full of information. This book contains an over view of the French Navy during this period and the battles fought, as well as the bases used by the navy. The heart of the book is the ship information, every French warship from this period is here with class info, armaments, and career information. The illustrations are sparse and limited to ship plans, base maps and b/w paintings and drawings of the ships as well as some b/w photos of some of the later ships, if you are expecting lots of color paintings of ships and the models of ships this is not that kind of book. I own all of the books in this series and love all of them for the huge amount of data that they contain. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the French Navy during this period, there is no other book like this one.

Tredrea I have already written individual responses to the reviews posted here by Robert Hendricks and Ulises Victoria, but in the interests of more fully balancing their critiques, I am adding my own general comments of this most excellent work by one of the premier British authors in the field of sailing warship development and documentation along with his new found coauthor Stephen Roberts whose own field of particular specialization has involved extensive archival research into the subject of French warships.. This book is the first in what will be a two volume summary of the entire French sailing navy from 1600 through the effective end of sail in 1862 and compliments Rif Winfield's exhaustive four volume study of British sailing warships during the same period. The only similarly comprehensive study of the French sailing navy can only be found in the seven volume French language compendium by the French scholar Alain Demerliac. This work by Winfield and Roberts provides the same depth of coverage as Demerliac's pioneering work and does so in what is, in my opinion, a more organized and compact format that includes discussion of various elements relating to the development of French warships as a function of the strategic and operational imperatives place on France by its history and its geographical placement at the center of the European subcontinent. It has three great advantages for English speaking students of the subject. The first and most obvious is that it is written in English and accordingly accessible to readers for whom, like myself, the French language is a great and enduring mystery. Secondly and of equal importance, it is affordable at a reasonable price and this stands in marked contrast to the Demerliac series which is not only difficult to obtain, but on the order of ten times the expense for the same information. The third is that it has over 260 grayscale illustrations, all enhanced by commentary and, with the commentary, worth the price of the book by itself. The potential buyer of French Warships in the Age of Sail should not assume that this book and its work in progress prequel covering the period from 1600 through 1785 are simply restructured versions of Alain Demerliac's own series or of the work of other French researchers such as Pierre le Conte.. Both Stephen Roberts and Rif Winfield have availed themselves of their own extensive research efforts and Stephen Roberts in particular has researched the same archival resources available to Alain Demerliac as part of his lifetime pursuit into the subject. In addition to this, the two authors have augmented and corrected Demerliac's coverage of foreign acquisitions, particularly those involving the navies of the Netherlands and of the Venetian Republic during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic periods with new and extensive information not available to Demerliac thanks to their contacts with James Bender on the Dutch navy and Guido Ercole on the navy of Venice. This is not the kind of book that naval aficionados can casually read cover to cover for pleasure and diversion, although it is definitely the kind of book that either people with a deep interest in warship development OR in naval historical studies of campaigns and wars can browse their ways through over time as either the need or the mood strikes them. What it is is an informational resource packaged in a manageable and diverting format. I treasure my own copy and recommend it highly.

1 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I was disappointed in the book By Robert L. Hendricks I was disappointed in the book. Although a large format book with a beautiful jacket, that promise did not pan out for me. The cover said "Design, Construction". Actually the book is an extensive inventory of French naval ships by type and how they were acquired. I was interested in finding out how French ship design and construction differed from the British or Dutch. If the French were noted for innovation, how so? How can one distinguish a French ship for that of another country? These questions were not answered for me.

Brantley Bookworm Speaks!Guardians of the Galaxy: The Junior NovelWritten by James Gunn and Nicole Perlman****Guardians of the Galaxy were an obscure title of Marvel Comics that had a limited release. When it was decided to make a movie about them, there were understandably some doubts about investing so much money into an adaptation of a relatively unknown franchise. All doubts were swept away on the day of release, when Guardians of Galaxy opened to rave reviews of a fun, action-packed space adventure that is a speck of light in a film landscape dominated by doom and angst. That’s not what we are here to talk about today. Not yet at least. Today, we are here to discuss one of the many promotional items released before and after the film’s release, the junior novelization of Guardians of the Galaxy. The Story: An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy tells the story of a group of cosmic misfits--Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot--who band together to protect a mysterious orb against Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. The Good: Bookworm has not read too many junior novelizations of movies, but this tome is a good example as it is definitely a junior novel. The plot and writing has been greatly simplified and the violence has been almost completely omitted or toned down. Thankfully, the writers did a good job of preserving the feel of Guardians of the Galaxy for those who have already seen the movie. Some may call kid friendly adaptations. a soulless cash grab but that is an unfair assessment. The film is not that offensive but it has enough violence and some swear words to earn its PG-13 rating. So it is probably not a good idea for little kids to see it. Nonetheless, this book is gentle enough that kids can read to their heart’s content. The children are the future and it is the duty of the Nerd sphere to guide and nurture the next generation of geeks. The Flaws: The most glaring flaw is the books ending: it is unfinished. It basically stops right before the big climax. This is probably due to the fact that it was released before the film’s release and they did not want to spoil the ending. Still, that could not prevent the feeling of let down upon the completion of this text. Its purpose is understandable and it would probably cause Bookworm to want to go see the movie (again). Still…Secondly, the book being simplified causes some details to be lost. Normally it is the book that is less detailed than the movie but in this case the book leaves out a lot.Final Verdict:While not as good as the real things and Bookworm looks forward to a real novelization, Guardians of the Galaxy: The Junior Novel, is exactly what is says it is and in spite of its changes remains a faithful adaptation to the source material and perfect for younger readers.Four out of Five Starsthecultureworm.blogspot.com

Definitely a good introduction to the Guardians Of The Galaxy By Amazon Customer VERY well done, for the adult readers (if you are reading it with your kids), it covers what appears to be the first 2/3rds of the film, leaving the big conclusion out. Well written and true to the characters while staying age appropriate.

In Sidewalking, David L. Ulin offers a compelling inquiry into the evolving landscape of Los Angeles. Part personal narrative, part investigation of the city as both idea and environment, Sidewalking is many things: a discussion of Los Angeles as urban space, a history of the city’s built environment, a meditation on the author’s relationship to the city, and a rumination on the art of urban walking. Exploring Los Angeles through the soles of his feet, Ulin gets at the experience of its street life, drawing from urban theory, pop culture, and literature. For readers interested in the culture of Los Angeles, this book offers a pointed look beneath the surface in order to see, and engage with, the city on its own terms.

Sidewalking: Coming to Terms with Los Angeles, by David L. Ulin

Review "The moments of true beauty in this shortest of books are precisely when Ulin reminds us that the everyday texture of Los Angeles . . . already functions like a quantum field out of which distant influences, disorienting urban rebirths and half-remembered cinematic cameos are constantly emerging. It is a city of 'seismic existentialism, ' he wonderfully suggests, whose ground is shaken not just by earthquakes but by the seemingly endless eruption of alternative urban forms, often successfully breaking through."--Geoff Manaugh"Los Angeles Times" (10/09/2015)"Walking in Los Angeles is not an oxymoron. In this revealing meditation on what it means to pound the pavement in the City of Automobiles, book critic David L. Ulin observes a Los Angeles that many of us didn't even knew existed. . . . Thoughtful and poetic, Ulin's small volume proves there is more to the City of Angels than just beaches, movie stars and abundant sunshine."--June Sawyers"Chicago Tribune" (10/23/2015)"In a series of fascinating, at times impressionistic, disquisitions [Ulin] unlocks some of Los Angeles s hieroglyphic secrets. Step right up then for Ulin s tour of Los Angeles, a diffuse city full of 'nonlandmark landmarks.' . . . The pleasure of"Sidewalking"is watching Ulin contextualize each place by considering the way its history is preserved, effaced, or buried under the surface."--Matt Seidel"Los Angeles Review of Books" (11/03/2015)""David Ulin s"Sidewalking"opens LA up for all of us locals or not. A quietly stirring book, this should be on your must-read list. . . . I loved it and can t wait to read it again and again."--Anna March"The Rumpus" (01/13/2016)"

From the Inside Flap "Sidewalking is a profound and poetic book. It is a meditation not only on the strange and marvelous nature of Los Angeles but also on the nature of history, memory, and community itself. This is nonfiction writing at its very best." —Susan Orlean, staff writer for the New Yorker and author of seven books, including the New York Times bestseller The Orchid Thief “Sidewalking will cement David Ulin’s already well-deserved reputation as a leading literary critic. Like a good, long walk, his book is an exercise in patience, observation, and reflection. At the end of the journey, you feel you’ve been someplace—and you feel illuminated and enlightened." —Héctor Tobar, author of the New York Times bestseller Deep Down Dark: The Untold Stories of 33 Men Buried in a Chilean Mine, and the Miracle That Set Them Free "An inspiring challenge to engage with urban life, Sidewalking raises unprejudiced questions about city and 'city'—the built environment and the individual’s own experience of it. L.A.'s famous sprawl and very human neighborhoods, its uneasy meld of public and private spaces, its legendary gridlock, its organic and artificial environments, all feature in what is no less than the teasing out of a new and nuanced interpretation of the nature of 'urbanity’ itself." —Janet Fitch, author of Paint It Black and White Oleander "I see this book as a benign remake of [the movie] Falling Down. In this version, Michael Douglas, after abandoning his car, has the good fortune to bump into David Ulin, who not only offers to accompany him on his journey home but also suggests a few extensive detours. In the course of their walking-talk tour, Douglas learns that he has the good fortune to reside in a fascinating city and goes on to live a fulfilled—and inquiring—life."   —Geoff Dyer, author of numerous books, including But Beautiful, winner of the Somerset Maugham Prize "There are so many lines in this book I’d like to have at my fingertips, so many rational, logical, wholly original arguments for why Los Angeles is deeper and more soulful than it can seem, that I almost wish I could keep it in my pocket for whenever an outsider coughs up the usual hoary insults. As it is, Sidewalking has taken up welcome and necessary residence in my mind. And, to be precise, David Ulin doesn’t argue on behalf of his adopted city. He observes, he challenges, he shows his abiding and complicated love for the place. Which is only right, since when it comes to L.A.’s status as the most surprising and mysterious city in America, there is no argument." —Meghan Daum, author of The Unspeakable: And Other Subjects of Discussion

About the Author David L. Ulin is the author or editor of eight previous books, including The Lost Art of Reading: Why Books Matter in a Distracted Time and the Library of America’s Writing Los Angeles: A Literary Anthology, which won a California Book Award. A 2015 Guggenheim Fellow, he is book critic, and former book editor, of the Los Angeles Times.

By Selleree I liked this book. This book is basically a rumination of one transplant from NY to LA who has lived there for, what I'm guessing, is about 10-20 years. He is someone that used to take public transportation, walk a lot, and he was trying to apply the same mindset and walking options in LA. I can totally relate. I spent some time in LA myself, although a whole lot more recently, and I too was taking public transportation and walking in a car city, and I felt that he was really on point about many things. You really have a different, more direct interaction with the CITY when you're walking then when you're driving. I agree that the city has this mish mosh of OLD and NEW together at the same time, of PUBLIC and PRIVATE together at the same time, and REAL and FAKE at the same time, Indoor/ outdoor space at the same time, etc., the list goes on. Those are EXACTLY some of the same things I noticed in LA that other cities, like NY don't really have. And I love how those opposite worlds collide, I agree with the author, they make the city WHAT it is and make it great. He used a lot of movies, music, and cultural references in his writing, all of which I felt were very relevant. He also used a LOT of quotes, esp early on in the book, and I thought those were kind of annoying and didn't really connect well. I thought that he repeated himself a lot, which I wasn't totally against, but a little more diversity in his example and thoughts would have been nice. Although I suppose if you ARE ruminating, you DO repeat a lot and analyze the SAME thing from MANY ANGLES which is exactly what he did here. I enjoyed learning a lot of the facts about the city I didn't know. Like I didn't know LACMA didn't originally have an entrance on Wilshire. Having lived so close to there and passing it every day, that blows my mind. Also didn't know a lot of the history of the city, which I was happy to learn about.Overall, I liked this book. Warning to the new reader - it reads more like a highly analytical, diary with history and media thrown in then a guide book to LA and famous places. And I LIKED THIS TOO, I know all about the famous touristy places, been there done that. But it's the more LOCAL aspect that I enjoyed. As he described the streets he walked I could relate because I remember walking them too, and seeing those neighborhoods as well. It's all about the LOCAL aspect. The everyday. The growth of a city. And the continuing interchange between old and new. It was really nice to see his perspective.

A meditation about walking the sidewalks of a city known for drivers and highways and traffic jams. And more so, a meditation about slowing down to notice our relationship with where we live, how our identities and memories are interwoven with the physical space we share with others. Sidewalking feels in some ways like a companion piece to Joan Didion's Slouching Towards Bethlehem. Essays that give you a complex look at California and beg you to engage more in the world.

It is a smart, short personal take by a former New Yorker who truly knows Los Angeles and literally walks you through it.

First published in 1981, Harry W. Crosby’s Last of the Californios captured the history of the mountain people of Baja California during a critical moment of transition, when the 1974 completion of the transpeninsular highway increased the Californios’ contact with the outside world and profoundly affected their traditional way of life. This updated and expanded version of that now-classic work incorporates the fruits of further investigation into the Californios’ lives and history, by Crosby and others. The result is the most thorough and extensive account of the people of Baja California from the time of the peninsula’s occupation by the Spaniards in the seventeenth century to the present. Californio Portraits combines history and sociology to provide an in-depth view of a culture that has managed to survive dramatic changes. Having ridden hundreds of miles by mule to visit with various Californio families and gain their confidence, Crosby provides an unparalleled view of their unique lifestyle. Beginning with the story of the first Californios—the eighteenth-century presidio soldiers who accompanied Jesuit missionaries, followed by miners and independent ranchers—Crosby provides personal accounts of their modern-day descendants and the ways they build their homes, prepare their food, find their water, and tan their cowhides. Augmenting his previous work with significant new sources, material, and photographs, he draws a richly textured portrait of a people unlike any other—families cultivating skills from an earlier century, living in semi-isolation for decades and, even after completion of the transpeninsular highway, reachable only by mule and horseback. Combining a revised and updated text with a new foreword, introduction, and updated bibliography, Californio Portraits offers the clearest and most detailed portrait possible of a fascinating, unique, and inaccessible people and culture.

Californio Portraits: Baja California's Vanishing Culture (Before Gold: California Under Spain and Mexico), by Harry W. Crosby

Review “Descended from the first Mexican families who settled the region, the remote mountain people of Baja California follow a lifestyle that preserves their traditional folkways. In lively, elegant prose and stunning photographs, Harry W. Crosby portrays the Californios’ customs and rich heritage. This newly updated version of Crosby’s seminal work on the Sierra de Guadalupe will become an indispensable reference for scholars, Baja California devotees, and anyone interested in the complete saga of northwestern Mexico and the American southwest.”—Iris H. W. Engstrand author of San Diego: California’s Cornerstone and William Wolfskill: Frontier Trapper to California Ranchero

About the Author Harry W. Crosby is a photographer and historian who specializes in the history of Alta California and Baja California. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Nostalgic about these gatekeepers By Dr Jacques COULARDEAU This book is essential to understand a little bit more this Baja California. The old ranchero time, which is so young in retrospective, less that three centuries, or about, when human occupation is going beyond counted time, which is probably beyond the Ice Age, this time is vanishing. This ranchero agricultural and herding living styles are indeed vanishing because for one it does not pay any more what is needed to simply live in our modern world, and for a second reason because people want to have TV, all modern commodities and amenities and the possibility to go around, to celebrate, to educate themselves, to live on a grand scale, which is not exactly possible in such a desolate place. But the book is essential just to keep it alive in our memories and in our consciousness. And we must keep in mind that this poverty and these poor people are those who saved, kept, unknowingly about the value of it, the oldest heritage of Northern America, at least 20,000 years old or more, though no one has even dared to try and speculate, which means start some real geological and archaeological research. The phenomenal paintings on the rock faces of this peninsula are not yet properly dated because the paint used by the first inhabitants of this region does not contain any carbon and cannot be dated with standard methods. Then we should start excavating to find what is no longer visible, what is in the earth, covered up by centuries of dust. That has not been done. We should also really analyze these paintings and compare them with all the rock paintings we know in the world, including the oldest that seem to go back to 45,000 years ago, at least. But we must understand these simple people living there are the wardens of this treasure and we must also say that those who arrived from Europe were wise enough or unaware enough not to destroy this heritage and it is still there. It could really with some work and investment become a high spot of artistic tourism. Millions of people every year are visiting such sites all around the world, and even sites that are less old that this one.The strangest element I find I n this field is the opposition of geologists and archaeologists to just ask the question because it obviously cannot be seen as an appendage of the Clovis migration. It is totally disruptive of this hypothesis and dominant archaeological forces seem to be so attached to this Clovis hypothesis that they block any other approach with spite and arrogance, the way mandarins can do all over the world in any culture. It will fall one day, and soon, just the way the refusal of Africa as the nest of Homo Sapiens fell and the same way today we have pushed things so far back that we cannot even imagine Homo Sapiens emerging less than 300,000 years ago. It was a miserable 100,000 years ago some thirty years ago, and we know today Homo Sapiens arrived in Crete some 160,000 years ago. Things have obviously changed. Where is the time when Greenberg was laughed at when he pretended all human languages had only one source, one melting pot.And they will change in America too when we start digging in Chile and in Baja California, and probably some other sites, both in South, Meso- and North America. But let us thank these simple Californians from Baja California who have saved and kept this unique heritage. And let discover and understand their way of life, even if it is disappearing. They might and probably will be the touristic guides of tomorrow.Dr Jacques COULARDEAU
