With the rise of a range of private-sector entrepreneurial firms interested in pursuing space commerce, the process whereby their efforts might be incubated, fostered, and expanded comes to the fore as an important public policy concern in a way never before present in the Space Age. In the United States we are witnessing the convergence of several powerful economic forces, including the need to restore American capability to reach low-Earth orbit (LEO) for the servicing of the International Space Station (ISS) and the rise of a hospitality/tourism/entertainment industry interested in space. Through these case studies, we explore how to apply more effectively already-tested models of government support for commercial activities, as well as the interactions of both the public and private spheres in a new opportunity zone in space. In each case, a summation yields a range of key points.

Abducted at the age of eleven, Evelyn Amony spent nearly eleven years inside the Lord’s Resistance Army, becoming a forced wife to Joseph Kony and mother to his children. She takes the reader into the inner circles of LRA commanders and reveals unprecedented personal and domestic details about Joseph Kony. Her account unflinchingly conveys the moral difficulties of choosing survival in a situation fraught with violence, threat, and death.             Amony was freed following her capture by the Ugandan military. Despite the trauma she endured with the LRA, Amony joined a Ugandan peace delegation to the LRA, trying to convince Kony to end the war that had lasted more than two decades. She recounts those experiences, as well as the stigma she and her children faced when she returned home as an adult.             This extraordinary testimony shatters stereotypes of war-affected women, revealing the complex ways that Amony navigated life inside the LRA and her current work as a human rights advocate to make a better life for her children and other women affected by war.

I Am Evelyn Amony: Reclaiming My Life from the Lord's Resistance Army (Women in Africa and the Diaspora), by Evelyn Amony

Review “Evelyn Amony provides penetrating insights into one of the most notorious yet least understood armed groups, the Lord’s Resistance Army. This is an invaluable account of what a woman experienced during years in captivity and, after escaping, her struggle to regain her humanity and agency. Essential reading for anyone studying armed opposition groups, women and war, transitional justice, and recovery.”—Dyan Mazurana, Tufts University“A survivor’s testimony of kidnapping and survival in Uganda. . . . All the more harrowing for its matter-of-fact understatement.”—Kirkus Reviews“With the help of Erin Baines’s careful and knowledgeable editing and pertinent contextualization, Evelyn Amony has written a remarkable memoir . . . . Throughout the book there is a forceful narrative agency that is rare among works where outsiders present and edit the life histories of former child soldiers. The account is as painful as it is revealing. . . . Even if it was a difficult story to pen down, the result is an acutely honest and personal story of gain and loss that avoids denying the humanity of the perpetrators, and one that also outlines the everyday inner workings of the Lord’s Resistance Army.”—WarScapes   “One of the most detailed published accounts of life inside an armed group, describing initiation rituals, rules for members of the group, and even the language Lords Resistance Army members shared. . . . I Am Evelyn Amony provides in-depth knowledge about the LRA, highlights the importance of examining women’s experiences during conflict, and illustrates the complexities of human behavior during war.”—African Studies Quarterly

About the Author Evelyn Amony is a human rights advocate for war-affected women in northern Uganda, working as chair of the Women’s Advocacy Network and with the Justice and Reconciliation Project in Gulu, Uganda. Erin Baines is an associate professor in the Liu Institute for Global Issues at the University of British Columbia and the cofounder of the Justice and Reconciliation Project in Gulu, Northern Uganda. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Disappointment with every page By Jared Pelech I was expecting a book much more like "A long way gone" by Ishmael Beah but it turned into a book with a lot of sympathy for Joseph Kony and the LRA in general which made it very very difficult to stomach. I know what she went through was terrible but at times it sounds more like a high school drama when she is detailing he relations with the other wives. She talks about Kony like he is a man to respect when he is responsible for the deaths of thousands. I was disappointed that she seemed to gloss over all the horrible things the LRA did rather than actually exposing the tragedy that they are.

By the fall of 1944 the Western Allies appeared to be having it all their own way. The summer’s Normandy invasion had finally succeeded and the Germans had been driven out of northern France and most of the Low Countries. In September the invasion of France’s southern coast had met less opposition and Allied divisions had begun lining up along the Rhine. But while the Americans were about to meet a nasty surprise in the Ardennes, the Germans never did let go of the province of Alsace, and in a hard pocket around the city of Colmar continued to resist. On New Year’s Eve they launched a counteroffensive, Operation Northwind, that nearly put Allied forces back on their heels. While the Allies were eventually able to take care of their Ardennes problem the Colmar one still remained. On January 12, 1945, Eisenhower could only tell George Marshall, “It is a very bad thorn in our side today." This is the story of the Sixth Army Group (7th US & 1st French Armies) which fought on the southern flank of the SHAEF front. The French had multiple problems during this campaign so that increasing number of US divisions needed to take part. In the process the 3rd and 28th Infantry Divisions, and 10th and 14th Armored, among others were able to cover themselves with heroism, though hardly less than the threadbare German 19th Army, which bravely resisted against enormous odds until finally the west bank of the Rhine was cleared. Amidst a horrific winter and rough terrain, interspersed by demolished towns, both sides traded blows in a ferocious campaign often neglected in histories of the war. This book informs us fully of the tremendous and costly struggle waged on that often-neglected sector of the front.REVIEWS "...scrutinizes a lesser-known campaign from the closing days of World War II. After the success of the Normandy invasion, as well as the expulsion of German forces from northern France and most of the Low Countries, a fierce pocket of German resistance around the city of Colmar continued to frustrate Allied forces. This last-ditch holdout was so fierce that in January of 1945, President Eisenhower said to George Marshall, "It is a very bad thorn in our side today." Eisenhower's Thorn on the Rhine examines this military juncture from all perspectives; chapters describe in detail the military strategies utilized and their repercussions, as well as the hardships and bravery of troops pressed to their limit on both sides. Extensive notes, a bibliography, and an index round out this scholarly military history, highly recommended especially for public and college library World War II collections.Midwest Book review Nathan N. Prefer has a reputation for re-examining World War II battles that history, for whatever reason, has overlooked, and in Eisenhower's Thorn On The Rhine, he's uncovered a humdinger. – History of War Magazine 02/2016 A brutal winter, rugged terrain and devastated towns are the backdrop for the writer’s factual but dramatic chronicle of how Allied and Axis forces traded blows in this costly but relatively overlooked clash of arms.Toy Soldier and Model Figure Magazine

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good, but additional and more detailed maps needed. By Brian Lee Knipple The author has done another excellent job of relating a less well known campaign. I could not give the book five stars because the maps are inadequate. The detailed accounting of unit actions are simply not supported by the six maps, all of which are drawn from sources and not original.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A decent book By Daniel Carey This is a decent book. It covers the battles of Dever's 6th Army Group. The book discusses the creation of the Colmar pocket, which became the thorn in Eisenhower's side. It also discusses the German operation Nordwind. The book is mostly from the American point of view, with some German and French information. I would have liked to have given it more stars, but cannot really justify it. I've read other books about this area (First to the Rhine) and such, so it covers ground I already know. There is not much from the soldiers's point of view. The author uses information from Medal of Honor citations and other medals for valor, which is interesting at first. However, those are not a substitute for telling us what life was like for the average soldier, day in and day out. I think the book also lacks a discussion of how Devers and Eisenhower got along (or didn't), something that clearly impacted this army group. Still, I recommend this book if you are not familiar with this part of World War II.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. ... original signed copy back through the kick-starter campaign and loved the direction By Ericka L I got the original signed copy back through the kick-starter campaign and loved the direction, artwork and story. Everything melded together perfectly. Seeing as how I consider myself a literature nerd, and was (coughs) sometimes a comic book reader as well, you can say I have an appreciation for most things cool and nerdy. Felt, I could accurately do a review, since I have read it and also part of its charm is the feelings the images evoke as well. One of the most touching panels I would say as far as art (and even how the story flowed) [not exactly a spoiler alert, but stop reading if you feel it might be]...but the panel where our protagonist goes back to see the room Gabrielle was found in, was incredibly moving to me...but then again I can be a sentimental person sometimes anyway. Oh, there's plenty of stuff male audiences would like about it as well, but I'm just saying, I personally think there's something for everyone in it. Of course, if you aren't fond of like Gothic Victorian period, or unsettling stories, then this probably won't leave you in a happy place, but if you find enjoyment from the bizarre, from the well-thought provoked, and the shocking while keeping perspective, then I'd tell you, you'd enjoy this. I think it would help to be a fan of the band/or Dani or even the artist, but you don't have to have a concept of any of that to enjoy the basic story premise and the art work, but...I think it does help if you have a frame of reference. Would I get another story by Dani, absolutely (if he publishes a book of poetry, outside of his lyrics in music (I do enjoy the music quite a great deal though), I'd certainly buy it, would I buy another work by the artist, sure). You know talent when you see/hear it. There's many hidden gems in this comic, and not just the obvious fan cameos (sadly, I couldn't afford to put my face in there, though not sure anyone would want to see that anyway lol), but I certainly had no problem backing such a great endeavor.Basically, the premise of the story is that our lovable rogue Dani is hit with the news that his star crossed lover Gabrielle has committed suicide upon learning some unsettling news. Dani's book (not unlike what happened to the Marquis De Sade, oddly enough) was then confiscated by the police and they tried to point the finger at our protagonist. But, any smart person knows that just because someone has written something, doesn't mean they are responsible for the actions of others (see De Sade's history). Then, in an ether imbued euphoria and drunk on wine, our great hero goes to the nether words (or what can only be describes as that, or a dream, you decide?). Where he meets some very colorful characters on his way back to Gabrielle, but he runs in with some vampires, Oscar Wilde ghost, bats and a impending travel through the forest on his way to a mansion. He uncovers the sad truth, that Gabrielle also used ether (though as he stated she was not known for over indulging as our main protangonist admitted he so frequently did, so he was surprised by the untimely end of Gabrielle). In an effort to free her spirit, he strikes up a deal with Lilith, that he will become her dark laureate in exchange for making his way back to Gabrielle, but we are left with a strange sort of ending, we're not really sure if the two will be reunited, but there is the hope that they will be (in this sense, the protagonist seems more choatic good, that he will do whatever it takes to be reunited, and damn the consequences). In that way, it is an endearing story, if you like stories that are a bit bittersweet, and endings that aren't perfectly clear (but then what else is often in life?).

Martin's fantasy classic A Game of Thrones reaches its spellbinding conclusion!   Driven by the need to avenge his father's murder and clear the name he himself is not permitted to bear, Jon Snow breaks his solemn vow and deserts from the Night's Watch-an action for which there is but a single penalty: death. Meanwhile, Eddard's heir, Robb Stark, seeks to rally his bannermen, not all of whom are eager to follow the young, unproven leader, no matter whose son he may be. American icon Joe Kubert and Italian writer Claudio Nizzi collaborated on the exhilarating western Tex: The Lonesome Rider at the turn of the century--and this standalone graphic novel is now available to a wider English-language audience! Tex hunts down four ruthless killers who massacred a peaceful farming family, using his detective skills, ranger's experience, and brute force to track down his targets! However, each killer is cunning and skilled in his own right! This is the first U.S. edition of a graphic novel that was drawn by Kubert in the early 2000s!

Tex: The Lonesome Rider, by Joe Kubert

About the Author Joe Kubert was a prominent cartoonist, graphic novelist and illustrator. He was the founder and president of the Kubert School for cartoon and graphic arts in New Jersey. His extraordinary career spans the history of the comic book in America: he began drawing comics in 1938, just as Superman made his debut in Action Comics #1, and continued to be one of the most vital cartoonists in the history of the industry, writing and drawing both mainstream comic book characters as well as, more recently, graphic novels of his own conception. Kubert began his career at the early age of 12; his long list of well-loved cartoon figures includes Abraham Stone, Tarzan, Flash, Batman, Superman and the X-Men.

An obscure Joe Kubert Graphic Novel gets a clasy new edition By Stephen Vincent Kempton Dark Horse has taken this rare European graphic novel and given it a very fitting classy new edition it so rightly deserves. The one thing this volume could use is some background information so I will attempt to provide that in the course of this review.Joe Kubert's contributions to the field of comics art are legendary. First as artist himself with beautiful art starting in Golden Age of comics with illustrations for early DC superheroes like the Flash and Hawkman spanning to his award-winning graphic novels done in the last couple decades of his life. Second as the father of Adam and Andy Kubert his equally talented sons. And third as the creator of The Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art where he has mentored hundreds of people working today in comics, animation and related fields. This 230 page graphic novel was originally printed in Italian in 2001. There was an obscure English-language version printed in 2005 by a company called SAF comics. I also own that version, it is printed in black and white and is a softcover. This is printed on glossy high quality paper in full color in Hard Cover with a dust jacket. If you own or have seen the Kubert Tarzan Archives also done by Dark Horse this is done in the exact same format with equally good production values.Tex Willer is the longest running Italian comic book. First created in 1948 and continuing today. Over 1,100 regular Tex Willer comics have been published plus large 230 page TexOne specials of which this is one of. Tex has worldwide appeal, in the Nordic countries his adventures rate almost as much admiration as those of the Donald Duck family of books.Tex Willer has a long history and continuity with three regular traveling companions and a large cast of continuing characters and villains. For this story it was decided that Tex would ride alone hence the subtitle The Lonesome Rider. As a favor to the Italian publishers of his Graphic Novels , Joe agreed to do this story for them provided he had unlimited time to complete it. According to an interview he says he worked on it on and off for seven years while teaching full time and taking other side work. The story itself written by current Tex Willer writer Claudio Nizzi is a good one but a little bit of a cliche. On his way to visit a farm couple and their teen daughter who he has not seen in around fifteen years Tex discovers all three have been recently murdered by three whites and an Indian. They discover Tex in pursuit and dump him and his horse over a cliff. Recovering from the fall the story splinters in to four separate storylines as he pursues each killer alone. The art by Joe Kubert is kinetic and powerful with lush swatches of black inking. Every brush stroke is purposely placed. The coloring I am guessing was done in house by Dark Horse and strangely not credited. The coloring is done in a traditional flat style with subdued tones which do not distract from the art. I would not like to see this done with current overrendered style with the dark palate which is in current vogue. One minor disappointment is on pages 9 through pages 13 Joe Kubert originally drew the young lady bathing nude . Even though the front side naughty bits are totally covered the Italian publisher who is described as very Catholic forced Joe to make her bathing in a full length petty coat, which seems strange. Even stranger after she is murdered she is clearly depicted as nude. I have seen scans of a limited edition of the original art published in an earlier promotional version done for the Nordic countries. Also in that Graphic Novel it had depictions of Tex Willer's supporting cast who do not appear in story. Those would have made great extras. But what we do get is excellent and a welcome addition to any lover of Joe Kubert's art and a classic Western story which is a fun read.

By ameruz I've read 100s of original Sergio Bonelli Tex, this one being the first in English and in hard cover with beautiful colors, it ranks at the very top of all times. Joe Kubert's drawing is excellent, more dramatic and live than a typical Tex novel.I can only wish there would be more published like this one. It should also be offered in soft cover and for less $$ as this one may attract only hard core Tex fans at this price.

Perfect for sharing with little ones to introduce them to the beauty of art. As I was sharing it with my son, we noted how, in those times, people did not have cameras. To have captured such moments in time with such attention to art, detail and backgrounds, is a real treat. We enjoyed this collection and appreciate it being offered to help introduce and inform and to "touch the palate" of the young so they can see what truly good art is. It is a walk in the past, showing us the years-gone-by cleverly depicted by a famous artist, but also the colors and artistic presentation gives much material to discuss this art form. This volume is appreciated and I recommend it to you. I also say a heartfelt "Thank You!" to the ebook composer Stanley Cesar for an excellent, informative, and educational short ebook which fits perfectly a youngsters' attention span.

My Virtual Reality Trip to the Louvre, Paris Part 11 of 12 By Don Kidwell French Paintings 18th/19th Centuries encore une fois : Cezanne was fine and Renoir was extraordinaire! How odd that I would remember seeing "Two Sisters" from a Parker Brothers board game called "Masterpiece" from way back in the 70s that I have an itch to play it again after all these years. That had Junior asking "Can I play, too?" Sure, when we get back home I replied. One last stop at Edgar Dega before we leave as the younger kids are starting to get antsy. And if you care to start where my reviews for our make believe trip to the Louvre began please head back to da Vinci if you please.

I would have loved to know what prompted Renoir to paint some of these images. As with the other artists highlighted by Stanley Cesar, there are multiple covers (some with paintings that are not included in the set of 24, and some that are repeated in the eBook). I do not understand Cesar’s reasoning behind this duplication.Copying paintings without commentary or insights – and repeating the same 24 images in each book – hardly seems worth 3 stars.

How did he end up playing escort to Tilly at a Christmas wedding in Spain? He expects her to be scheming and desperate. Instead she's sweet and honest. But why does she need to hire a man? When they have to share a room, Silas assumes this must be part of his escort duties. But he's wanted Tilly from the moment they met--whatever the consequences....The alpha-male character was well developed. Silas was a force to be reckoned with - self-assured, take-charge; possessive, protective, dominating; but not over-bearing, selfish, or cruel. Few authors give that type of depth to the supporting male character. I loved the story; however, I wanted Tilly to realize she judged Silas harshly and groundlessly, especially when one considers that she did the same thing. Silas' actions were basically intended to protect others (his brother, her and her mother included) though he did struggle with disclosure. Tilly had no such struggles offering her own omissions and half-truths, gave them little or no thought, and held Silas to a higher level of accountability. For a woman able handle herself in a male-dominated workplace, I found her allowing "the shrew" to "check her" then "checkmate her" somewhat frustrating. Whatever happened to "never let them see you sweat" - "fake it till you make it" - etc. I would have liked to see her play it off, think quickly, get back on her feet, one-up "Evilena"; and she & Silas handle their affairs in private. For me, unfortunately, Tilly at times appeared somewhat self-involved, judgmental, and unreasonable; and was NOT the strong woman she should have been when needed most. I would like to have seen certain things happen in the end. That said, this book should not be missed, Silas is ... particularly interesting!

A light Christmas Romance By Midniteillusion I didn't recall that I'd read this book before I started reading it this holiday season but only a few pages in and I remembered. I remembered liking it last time I read it and so I continued. I enjoyed it this time around too. It's a light read which is expected from a Harlequin book but I always enjoy the author, Penny Jordan and I think this one held up to her others of this style. The only real critique I have with the book is the how weak some of the secondary characters are. I get that they are suppose to be shallow people but I felt that Ms. Jordan could have written them with more depth. Also the soon-to-be sisters-in-law are written as very stereotypical southern Americans. But overall I enjoyed the Christmas romance.
