In the forward B.H. Liddell Hart identifies history as the foundation of personal philosophy. The books seems like the framework of his personal philosophy.Basic history tells you what happened. Elevated history is a theory of why something happened. The value of history is learning from other people's experience - Hart argues the student of history has a deeper knowledge base to draw from than someone with more personal experience. This broad historical knowledge is important because it leads to creativity and creative thought is more vital than courage or leadership.Hart's stated purpose was the pursuit of the truth - "To face life with clear eyes - desirous to see the truth - and to come through it with clean hands, behaving with consideration for others, wile achieving such conditions as enable a man to get the best out of life."Pursing the truth requires training. "He has to learn how to detach his thinking from every desire and interest, from every sympathy and antipathy - like ridding oneself of superfluous tissue."Hart shares the lessons he learned studying history. Hart advocates a survey of history that is both deep and wide. Another key is to remain skeptical, documents often lie and the illumination of personality can obscure performance. Uncovering truth is difficult, we may fear the truth or we ignore our truth for the sake of promotion. "Faith matters so much in times of crisis. One must have gone deep into history before reaching the conviction that truth matters more."In the next section, Hart explores the relationship between government and freedom. Hart is skeptical of those in power. Their rise in status is not evidence of their superior abilities. In fact, those in power are less likely to learn."All of us do foolish things - but the wiser realize what they do. The most dangerous error is failure to recognize our own tendency to error. That failure is a common affliction of authority.""The effect of power on the mind of the man who possesses it, especially when he has gained it by successful aggression, tends to be remarkably similar in every age and in every country. The final section examines war and peace. While war can serve a purpose, it is useful pursued by vain leaders or due to clumsy alliances. War rarely produces the desired result - " We learn from history that complete victory has never been completed by the result that victors always anticipate - a good and lasting peace.""What is the use of anyone sacrificing himself to preserve the country unless in the hope, and with the idea, of providing a chance to continue its spiritual progress - toward becoming a better country."

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Sobering reflections on history and life By Cristiano Nisoli This book is a gem. I am assuming the reader of this review is aware of who Sir Basil Liddell Hart is, and in this book---his last if I am not wrong---the reader will find a distillate of wisdom that only somebody who, like him, studied the difficult times, and lived through difficult time, could gather. Fools,” said Bismarck, “say they learn by experience. I prefer to profit by other people's experience.”Consider for instance the following:"Truth is a spiral staircase. What looks true on one level may not be true on the next higher level. A complete vision must extend vertically as well as horizontally—not only seeing the parts in relation to one another but embracing the different planes."How much needed is this attitude, when the political discourse is minced and simplified to the extreme? Or consider this:"We learn from history that in every age and every clime the majority of people have resented what seems in retrospect to have been purely matter-of-fact comment on their institutions. We learn too that nothing has aided the persistence of falsehood, and the evils resulting from it, more than the unwillingness of good people to admit the truth when it was disturbing to their comfortable assurance. Always the tendency continues to be shocked by natural comment and to hold certain things too “sacred” to think about."as an Italian living in USA I can certainly testify to that. And what about authority? Well, says BH Liddell Hart:"The most dangerous error is failure to recognize our own tendency to error. That failure is a common affliction of authority."Sounds familiar? Especially when authority demands war. Then the methods are always the same: War is necessary, other ways are futile, the enemy is irreducible, essentially different, an absolute evil:"It is a recurrent illusion in history that the enemy of the time is essentially different, in the sense of being more evil, than any in the past. It is remarkable to see how not only the impression but the phrases repeat themselves."Future generations, however, have the tendency to put the past in perspective, and don't look kindly on the previous generations' war hysteria. Of course they have the advantage of weighting the results of those decisions, which invariably turn out to be disappointing:"The germs of war find a focus in the convenient belief that “the end justifies the means.” Each new generation repeats this argument—while succeeding generations have had reason to say that the end their predecessors thus pursued was never justified by the fulfillment conceived."And of course, when authority demands war, a climate of self-censorships immediately establishes itself in the media, in the public discourse. But in such cases, warns the author, when you present your interlocutor with criticism, watch his/her reactions:"If he reacts to any such criticism with strong emotion; if he bases his complaint on the ground that is not “in good taste” or that it will have a bad effect—in short, if he shows concern with any question except “Is it true?” he thereby reveals that his own attitude is unscientific."It would instead be better to think things through, and see them from different angles, as"we learn from history that expediency has rarely proved expedient."Would you like a practical example? There you go, as harsh as this:"On that ground, in 1939 I questioned the underlying morality of the Polish Guarantee, as well as its practicality. If the Poles had realized the military inability of Britain and France to save them from defeat, and of what such defeat would mean to them individually and collectively, it is unlikely that they would have shown such stubborn opposition to Germany's originally modest demands—for Danzig and a passage through the Corridor."Even before reading this book I had dared to offer the same reasonable observation in a conversation on WWII, only to be called a neonazi (which I clearly am not) by a pugnacious and opinionated interlocutor. As you can see, being a military strategist and a military historian, the author is mostly concerned with issues of war, study of the causes that led to war, of the consequences of war (which he believe in most case prove that war was unjustified) and consequently on how to avoid war. Indeed commenting on the Roman maxim "si vis pacem para bellum" he writes:"In studying how wars have broken out I was led to suggest, after World War I, that a truer maxim would be “If you wish for peace, understand war."The author indeed cautions us to resist the propaganda of the dogs of war, and never act in hot blood, because:"tension is almost bound to relax eventually if war is postponed long enough. This has happened often before in history, for situations change. They never remain static. But it is always dangerous to be too dynamic, and impatient, in trying to force the pace. A war-charged situation can change only two ways"This book could be considered an ode to truth. Never sacrifice truth to myth, says the author, no matter how dearly you hold the myth: the consequences of avoiding truth are invariably horrific. Myth are justified in many ways, but truth needs no justification:"Faith matters so much in times of crisis. One must have gone deep into history before reaching the conviction that truth matters more."Unfortunately truth has few friends:"How rarely does one meet anyone whose first reaction to anything is to ask: Is it true?"Read this book. You won't be disappointed.

The man is a Genius By Ali S Burki A must read for both the people and the leaders of ALL the dictatorial regimes around the world (democracies would also surely benefit) . A book for all times to come. His understanding and explanation of where the real power lies is outstanding. What s breathtaking is how relevent his arguments are today and how strinkingly similar the working of all governments turn out to be (as generalized by Hart). He deals with issues such as "patterns and psychology of dictatorship", "power politics in a democracy" and lastly the the "desire for power" and "War".

STAY THROUGH THE NIGHT (Harlequin comics), by Anne Mather

About the Author Anne Mather always wanted to write. For years she wrote only for her own pleasure, and it wasn t until her husband suggested that she ought to send one of her stories to a publisher that they put several publishers names into a hat and pulled one out. The rest as they say in history. 150 books later, Anne is literally staggered by the result! Her email address is mystic-am@msn.com and she would be happy to hear from any of her readers.

But fame has its price, and now Liam lives reclusively on a remote Scottish island. Then Rosa Chantry knocks on his door and throws his world upside down. His desire for her is strong, but his conviction that he cannot satisfy a woman is stronger. But Rosa is persistent, and so is Liam's need for her. She is determined to ease his fear that the past has robbed him of his power as a man....This book was better than I expected. It brings together two people, seriously hurt and betrayed in the past, dealing with trust and self image issues as a result of past wrongs. He adds to their problems a crazed fan, and self-absorbed ex-fiancée; while she adds an addled, inconsiderate, mother, a selfish, self-absorbed sister (Mom's favorite), and a horrid ex-husband. This story is a quick read sure to please Harlequin Presents fans.

By KayLovesToRead Stay Through the Night by Anne MatherHarlequin Presents # 2581 - 2006Sent by her frantic mother to find her teenage sister, Rosa travels to a remote Scottish island. She'd been told her sister has taken up with best-selling horror author, Liam Jameson. Only when she finds Liam, her sister isn't with him nor had she ever been. After a horrendous attack by a deranged fan, Liam keeps pretty much to himself. Not only does he face the physical scars and daily pain, but the emotional ones too when his fiancée left him. Rosa sees the man Liam is and she's intensely attracted, but after a disasterous marriage she'd not willing to risk her heart again. Liam doesn't want Rosa's pity so he finds ways to push her away. This was a lovely read about betrayals and personal healing. Liam isn't a typical Presents alpha - in fact, I don't think I'd class him as alpha just determined and bitter. Rosa has a tough job convincing him that the outer scars mean nothing to the man he is inside. I was routing for both Liam and Rosa, and was very happy they found there HEA. :D

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Loved this one By Shakespeare Reader I really loved this book. Often you find a hero that is completely confident, if not arrogant, and he seems to have no problems of his own, while the heroine is bombarded with problems and self-esteem issues. I loved that both of them were hurt and heal each other.

::Although this is book 3 in series, this romantic novella was written as a stand-alone romance with a satisfying and happy ending and no cliffhanger:: Now that her best friend has found happiness, Annika Bashir is bursting in anticipation for her own happily ever after. Just one problem: Spoiled, shallow and utterly vain Annika is engaged to a boorish, “family-approved” lawyer who wouldn’t know how to please a woman with an illustrated set of detailed instructions in hand. He’s perfect on paper, but a real letdown in reality. But as long as he keeps handing over his Black American Express card for her frequent shopping excursions, she doesn’t seem too bothered by the lack of passion between them. Enter Dr. Kiran Patil, a handsome, stoic surgeon at a charity hospital who rocks Annika’s world—and entire worldview—when she breaks her ankle during a short trip to India. But this doctor doesn’t do shallow, and scorns vapid women with an affinity for Gucci handbags and extravagant shopping trips. Will he scorn Annika also? Or will he become seduced by the woman she has become during her trip to exotic and mystical India, which seems to have the power to peel back her shallow layers and reveal intense passions buried deep down inside?

Annika's Passion (A Bashir Family Romance Book 3), by Kennedy Claire

From the Author This is the third book in the Bashir Family Romance Series, but was written as a stand-alone novella focusing on Annika's story. Annika was an incredibly fun and interesting character to write; she thinks she has it all with her good looks, money and prestigious upcoming marriage to a family-approved lawyer. Perhaps she's so focused on external things, she's never given two thoughts about more meaningful things in life. I wanted to take this frivolous character and throw a lot at her: stuck in a charity hospital in a remote part of India, a handsome doctor who deplores ignorant Americans and rebuffs her attempts to use her beauty to get what she wants, and an orphan or two who show her that having materials things is not all its cracked up to be.Essentially, I wanted to challenge Annika to see if she can re-discover her humanity and figure out what's important in life, and also teach her the meaning of real love and real passion in the process. Did she pass the test? Read and find out!-Kennedy Claire

Not just a short trip to India after all By DSanz Copy provided for an honest review. What happens when you take a princess away from her kingdom and show her there is more to the world than handbags and clothes? This story takes Annika on a journey of self-discovery as she meets real people in a charity hospital in India. It is a pleasure to watch her walk away from her shallow nature and embrace people who have nothing, she learns that just because you have money does not mean you have happiness.Along the way she falls in love with the young doctor who cares she is in and together they open each other's eyes to things in life they were missing. This was a great read.

By Stacy M Scott I have fallen in ♡ with KC's writing style and sank into her first two books from this series pretty easily.I have to admit I was a little uncertain when i heard the next book was going to be about Annika because she had come off as shollow and self conceded but this book reminded me to not judge a book by it's cover! I learned a whole new side to this little Indian princess and learned how big of a heart she had.KC did it again too! She had me tearing up while reading this story but also had my heart going ninety to nothing :-) thank you for ANOTHER great read Kennedy Claire!

Luckily for me, I have had a great mentor teach me and guide me through almost all the things that were mentioned in the book. I am one of those people that consider myself indispensable in my line of work and career and a lot of the tenets mentioned in this book are exactly how I have lived my life over the last 8 years. I loved reading as a kid but through my adult life, never read much, which I had always blamed on time as well as lack of motivation. With the help of my mentor, I started reading again and actually ended up co-authoring a book with him and another industry book with another professional. In my line of work, a lot of people accumulate top licenses in order to move up in rank, and while I only have the second level license, I have managed to make it to a top rank simply due to the following: 1) Great networking, 2) My understanding of interpersonal relationships and nurturing those relationships 3) Curiosity about other subjects and topics outside of what I do, but correlates, and books co-written on different segments of my industry which goes into the part of my resume that shows the experience. Reading this book just put a smile on my face because I am living and benefitting greatly from everything suggested in the book and made me feel great about myself, that I am doing the right things and a living proof. You know what, it's not the "magic weight loss pill" but a true self help book that requires you to stay focused, disciplined and follow which is the real way to proper growth. It truly is the holy grail of self help book but I will change it to "self-growth" for this book.

No spoilers By Leaf On my Goodreads, bought at Rightstuf:The Angel of Elhamburg by Aki, along with Requiem of the Rose King, Vol. 1 (Requiem for the Rose King) and Kamisama Kiss, Vol. 17 were some of my most anticipated releases of 2015.The Angel of Elhamburg is comprised of 160 pages with 2 insert color pages. The dust jacket is gorgeous and truly something to look at. Underneath is a plain red hard cover book with the title in gold. Honestly it looks gorgeous and Yen Press truly deserves applause for their presentation of this manga.Aki is known for her characters more than she is known for her story. As this is the first manga I have read by her, I had some pretty high expectations since she is pretty well known in Japan, and there are lots of devoted fans in other countries. While Olympos received mixed reviews and Utahime: The Songstress was received very well-though has faded into the background-Aki is generally considered with high regard to those who have read her works.Story: Unfortunately, I have to go ahead and say right now that unless you want to be spoiled, I would just look at the premise that Amazon has provided. I won't go into spoilers here, but what I can say is minimal without ruining something for you if you decide to check this out. Short story-I HIGHLY recommend this!!! It appeals to all audiences, but if you are someone who generally reads only battle manga or shoujo high school manga, this is very different. And it might be the next thing you should read to branch out into another genre.SO, we jump right in to learn that castle Elhamburg has been taken over by King Madeth, a young man who rose up against the former King and has no royal blood or education. And then we have his childhood friend and knight, Lalvan, who has been able to see spirits and angels since he can remember. Despite this, they never bless him or speak to him. It is always Madeth who is blessed, even though he cannot see them.Lalvan is better than King Madeth at nearly everything, and he can see these divine beings. His loyalty to his friend and his conflicting feelings of jealousy and wanting to be seen as equal to Madeth is easy to understand and it shows that even the main character is never perfect. He has flaws and desires too.King Madeth admires Lalvan, understands how much smarter and kinder he is and overall truly respects him. He lacks an education and dislikes etiquette and believes Lalvan could make the better king. And both of them have already begun to realize that their "close friendship" is dying. This is NOT just a story about two guys fighting over a girl-I hate those unoriginal stories and I am sure you do too. This is a story about two men who both see the best and the worst in each other and have to come to terms with their own conflicting ideals and trying to learn who Prince Perseus's father is.This woman does NOT take up the central focus, nor does Prince Perseus. In fact, this is a study on a broken friendship, loyalty, and crumbling trust. A lot of symbolism was used.To some, this might be a little confusing because there isn't truly an answer thrown at you. It's a study that requires you to be focused when reading, and to think about the characters.I highly enjoyed this and look forward to more works by Aki.

Have you ever wondered what part (if any) science plays in the Genesis creation story? If so, The First Four Days was written for you. Physicist Delmar Dobberpuhl masterfully explains the scientific side of how God created the universe and rapidly matured it from Days 1 through 4 of the creation week. Instead of beginning with science and attempting to mold Scripture to fit it, Dobberpuhl starts his analysis with God’s Word and describes the scientific processes that were involved in each step of the creation and maturation of a perfect habitat for mankind. According to Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary, science is “knowledge covering general truths or the operation of general laws especially as obtained and tested through scientific method.” As the author explains, the truths scientists have discovered about this world must be complementary and not contradictory to God’s Word. In his book, The First Four Days, Dobberpuhl fills in the details of the creating-and-making account (CMA) in Genesis with speculation that is based on complementary scientific theories and discoveries. Furthermore, he provides new insights and answers to questions about what God did during Creation week.

Although it is not overly technical and contains no mathematics, it is very dense with ideas and scientific concepts. The organization of the book is well-executed and the language and explanations are very understandable. This makes it suitable for readers with a basic understanding of science. However, there are a number of issues with it.The scope of the book is a Biblical and scientific coverage of the first four days of the creation account in Genesis chapter 1 - and the coverage is very thorough. Rarely does a Creationist book go into such detail as this one. The first chapter is an introduction to the subject, Chapters 2-7 cover each of what the author calls "divine actions" that occurred on the first four days, and Chapter 8 is a summary with a brief account of Days 5 through 7. An appendix contains Dobberpuhl's paraphrased version of the Biblical creation account - which he refers to as CMA (Creating-and-Making Account) - with extensive notes on translation of words from the Hebrew. An endnotes section and a thorough index rounds out the book.Chapters 2-7 have a common outline starting with a description of the "divine action" (or miracle), moving on to consideration of the CMA verses and pertinent verses from other parts of Scripture, then to addressing scientific terms, building the CM model based on the "divine actions", and finishing with a summary of the chapter. The "divine actions" are specific miraculous activities that the Creator performs - one or two per day. (I like the term "divine action" and will continue to use it in this review.)Dobberpuhl is to be commended for the copious use of terms like "theoretically", "speculate", "assume", "infer", and related derivative words - these are a constant reminder that cosmogony is a field where much is not certain - and cannot be - because it is historical in nature. The use of "divine actions" is also a useful concept in organizing the CM model and provides a God-honoring foundation to the model. The book is actually an expansion of a paper by Dobberpuhl and two other authors that was published in 2007 [1]. In some ways, it is disappointing that the paper co-authors did not participate in authoring the book. The paper does provide a good background for the reader prior to reading the book (and is a recommended course of action especially since it is easily available on the Web). It should be noted that the paper did generate a Letter to the Editor response from Humphreys [2] which will be discussed later (and is also available on the Web).Chapter 1 of the book provides a succinct and useful definition of miracles (what Dobberpuhl refers to as "divine actions" throughout the book). The key to the definition is contained in the following quote:"The main point to remember is that mankind and their science cannot explain miracles when only natural processes and physical laws are assumed without any supernatural component being involved. In physical terms, miracles are identified by a supernatural change in one or more of the three basic components of the universe: space, material substance, and time. God created all three of these with his first command for the universe to come into existence (Genesis 1:1). These components are so basic to everything physical that exists that only God can change them." [3]The assignment of the "divine actions" to specific parts of the days of creation is not usually done in commentaries on Genesis 1, but is effective in this book. It allows a detailed, distinctive timeline of the events of the four days to be assembled into the CM model. There area a number of issues that the reader will need to notice - and should deal with and make his/her own decision on their plausibility. These, though they do not detract from the account of creation, call into question certain aspects of Dobberpuhl's CM model. These are dealt with, though not definitively, in the following paragraphs. As is true with any presentation of new ideas, there is further refining to be done. The CM model begins with a kind of "quark soup" before the formation of protons, neutrons, electrons, and photons - this is different than most standard creation models that assume water is the basic substance [4]. The non-existence of light is postulated as evidence that atoms (i.e., water) did not exist at the beginning of the CMA [5] (the way light and atoms interact is an interesting study [6], though I was unable to find support for Dobberpuhl's position that atoms could not exist without light photons). This further requires that the "heaven" and the "earth" of Genesis 1:1 were different than the "heaven" and "earth" that were specifically defined by God on Day 3 and this is reflected in the paraphrased version presented in the appendix [7]. This non-water original state is the primary objection expressed in Humphreys' response [2] to the original article [1]. As Humphreys states, the literal reading of Scripture and the successful predictions that he has made regarding the magnetic fields of the planets that he has made based on water as the original substance point toward a literal reading of "water". This is a valid objection that I believe needs further work to overcome. An interesting concept presented in Chapter 4 dealing with Day 2 and the formation of galaxies describes each galaxy as forming from a black hole that developed white holes essentially as a rupture in its event horizon [8]. This association of black holes and white holes does not appear to be backed by current theoretical descriptions of these phenomena. A white hole is, theoretically, the opposite of a black hole and the two can be (theoretically) associated with each other in one of two ways: the matter falling into a black hole comes out of a white hole in an alternate universe or the two are at opposite ends of a "wormhole" through the time-space continuum [9]. It is also worth noting that white holes are only theoretical - no evidence for their existence is currently known. Dobberpuhl goes on to use the rotational "flash" of a white hole at the center of the forming Milky Way galaxy as a possible source of the light at the dawn of Day 3 on Earth [10]. The plausibility of this explanation is left up to the reader, though more information on this suggested phenomenon could have been included. In the section of each chapter that describes other Biblical references to that chapters "divine action", frequent usage of Psalm 104 is made to provide Scriptural evidence for the CM model. The interpretation of these verses is very literal. A literal hermeneutic allows for a loosening of the interpretation in poetic passages to one that is not as literal - the psalms are definitely poetic. Although Psalm 104 is generally regarded as dealing with the creation account (see Morris [11], for example), an interpreter must exercise caution in not "over-interpreting" the details of the Psalm. The reader will need to decide how literally Psalm 104 can be taken. For these and, probably, other issues, anti-creationists will likely rip this book apart for alleged discrepancies with "known" science (admittedly, a general statement that can be made for just about any creationist book). However, the intended audience for this book is creationists who would like some further insights into the science behind the days of creation and its fit to Scripture - and are both perceptive in their reading and willing to do some work to understand the insights. It is a book for serious study and not for perusal by the casual reader.Despite these shortcomings, the book is an interesting read. Many of the ideas (remember it is dense with them) are fascinating insights that are worth consideration. In writing this review, I was forced to do a moderate amount of research and reading to better understand (and evaluate) some of the presented concepts. While I may not agree with some of them based on my research, my own knowledge was increased - a beneficial result. I do not recommend that the reader simply "read the book" as is often done with books. I recommend that the reader be willing and prepared to read the background material that I have suggested and to "interrupt" the reading with in-depth research to help form his/her own opinion on the concepts.-------------------ENDNOTES:[1] DeRemer, Frank, Mark Amunrud, and Delmar Dobberpuhl, "Days 1-4", Journal of Creation 21(3) December 2007, pages 69-76. The First Four Days (Day1 to Day4) By Ned - Origins Activist ("NOA") Delmar Dobberpuhl has provided a detailed scientific account of the first four days (Day 1 to Day 4). He was a laser physicist and knows about light (Gen. 1:3)! Dobberpuhl has a Master’s Degree from the University of Missouri – Rolla. This book covers Astronomy, Geology, Zoology and Botany. He describes matter down to the quark level. Dobberpuhl calls Genesis chapter one a creating-and-making account (CMA). A helpful summary ends each chapter and an index appears at the end. The two dozen illustrations are a great heuristic aid. One graphic shows the large scale structure of multiple galaxies (p. 60). An appendix gives insight into Hebrew terms used in Genesis One such as “placed” nathan and “sea monsters” tanniyniym.Dobberpuhl compares the budding of Aaron’s rod (Num. 17:7-9) to the dawn of plants on Day 3, “We should not be surprised that God could make plants sprout and come to maturity in less than a day …” (p. 117). He describes plant symbiosis which is a true enigma from the evolutionary viewpoint (which came 1st the bees or the roses?). He covers legumes and bacteria, tree roots with fungi as well as the Yucca Moth (pp. 135-138). Dobberpuhl breaks down photosynthesis to the atomic level – truly an indication of an Intelligent Designer (pp. 131-134).Dobberpuhl combines aspects of Barry Setterfield’s (c decay) and Russell Humphreys’ (time dilation) proposals to deal with the distant starlight problem (how can the cosmos be young if the stars are B’s of light-years away?). According to NASA’s measurements, the Pioneer probe is slowing down too fast (p. 163). Humphreys claims that this is evidence that the center of the cosmos is not that far from Earth. Thus, the Big Bang is in Big Pain.Dark matter is really a contrived fix to avoid young galaxies (pp. 164, 165). There are quasars that appear as two separate images due to gravity lenses. Dobberpuhl says that this is consistent with time dilation and the slowing of light (pp. 166-169).We have not been able to reproduce granite in the lab. There is evidence that water was present when granite formed (pp. 108, 109). This is in line with the CMA (Gen. 1:9). Dobberpuhl comments on Job 38:4-11, “This pictures the crust of the Earth as the source [of the sea] with reservoirs in it as the places where the seawater formed” (p. 85).Plasma clouds may be as hot as 10M °K and pose a problem for evolutionary cosmologists. How can this intergalactic media (IGM) be billions of years old without an energy source to maintain such high temperatures? Also, the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) does not exhibit the shadowing caused by nearby galaxies that the Big Bang would predict (pp. 70-72). Dobberpuhl has written a gripping exposition and I highly recommend it.

"The Art of Public Speaking is So Simple That it is Difficult" By customer Kleiser's Successful Methods of Public Speaking is nearly a century old, but still contains much to recommend it. It can be freely downloaded as an electronic file from Project Gutenberg, or you can buy this paper copy if you like to hold books in your hands.WHY BOTHER READING ABOUT OLD SPEECHES?---------------------------------The speeches themselves contain many powerful argumentative strategies and eloquent turns of phrase. Kleiser's anecdotes about the speakers are inspiring as well. Some Americans are mentioned, but most of the names will be familiar from British history. Here is an example of an anecdote:Edmund Burke recommended debate as one of the best means for developingfacility and power in public speaking. Himself a master of debate, hesaid, "He that wrestles with us strengthens our nerves and sharpens ourskill. Our antagonist is our helper. This amiable conflict withdifficulty obliges us to have an intimate acquaintance with our subject, and compels us to consider it in all its relations. It will not sufferus to be superficial." Burke, like all great orators, believed in premeditation, and always wrote and corrected his speeches with fastidious care. While such men knew that inspiration might come at the moment of speaking, they preferred to base their chances of success upon painstaking preparation.Kleiser also makes substantive comments on the speeches themselves. Here is one example:John Quincy Adams, in his speech on "The Life and Character ofLafayette," gives us a fine example of elevated and serious-mindedutterance. The following extract from this speech can be studied withprofit. Particularly note the use of sustained sentences, and the happycollocation of words. The concluding paragraph should be closelyexamined as a study in impressive climax.SUMMARY---------------------------------This book is an inexpensive way to get a hold of a great piece of scholarship. Let's face it. Unless you have a Kindle or other such device, you probably won't actually read through the electronic version on your computer screen. This can profitably be read with Kleiser's other works(see my review for Phrases for Public Speakers and Paragraphs for Study).

Alfred the Great - England’s Greatest King - was at once a great statesman and a great general. As statesman he guided his people through one of the most difficult periods of their history. England was not then one kingdom. When the Angles, Saxons and Jutes came from the shores of northern Europe and settled in Britain they had many kings or leaders, and each ruled a separate part of the country. Hundreds of years passed before the smaller kingdoms became united into one, and during that time the different kings were continually at war with each other. That part of England south of the Thames where the West Saxons had settled was called Wessex, and in 827 Egbert of Wessex, the grandfather of Alfred, exercised power over all the other kings of England, and was acknowledged as their overlord or Bretwalda. When Alfred came to the throne, England was under siege from Viking raiders. In saving Wessex from the general wreck brought about by heathen invasions, he made his kingdom the centre for the deliverance and union of all England. Though Alfred did not live to form England into a single kingdom, he made this work possible for his sons and grandsons. He also did much to increase the royal power and authority within his kingdom. As a general, the memory of his valour in the battle-field and his perseverance in the face of overwhelming difficulties will ever serve as an example to the British soldier. One secret of Alfred’s success was that his people knew they could trust him. He is known as Alfred the Truth-teller, for his word was his bond. To defend his people, to rule them justly, and to give them wise laws was not enough for him. He made it his further business to be their guide, their teacher, their father, and their friend. He undertook the humble task of a translator that they might be the better instructed in their own tongue. Though a great student, he was no narrow-minded recluse. Though a king he did not hold himself apart from his people, but delighted in mixing freely with them, rejoicing in the society of his scholars, his huntsmen, his craftsmen, and his mariners, interested in every worthy pursuit. While dealing all day with the common affairs of life, he ever kept before him the ideal of the highest. While other great names have been forgotten his has come down to us through a thousand years, encircled by the loving affection of the whole British race, familiar to every English-speaking child. Though King Alfred died rich in the love and gratitude of his subjects, it was impossible for them fully to realize all he had done for them. He had found them ignorant, dejected, a prey to heathen enemies. He left them enlightened, delivered, inspired with courage and hope, and struggling upwards on a path of progress from which they have never since wholly turned back. A E McKilliam’s history of Alfred the Great narrates the life of King, his family history and his legacy. It is essential reading for anyone interested in early British history. National Book Award Finalist Stay, Illusion, the much-anticipated volume of poems by Lucie Brock-Broido, illuminates the broken but beautiful world she inhabits. Her poems are lit with magic and stark with truth: whether they speak from the imagined dwelling of her “Abandonarium,” or from habitats where animals are farmed and harmed “humanely,” or even from the surreal confines of death row, they find a voice like no other—dazzling, intimate, startling, heartbreaking. Eddying between the theater of the lavish and the enigmatic, between the gaudy and the unadorned, Brock-Broido’s verse scours America for material to render unflinchingly the here and now. Grandeur devolves into a comic irony: “We have come to terms with our Self / Like a marmoset getting out of her Great Ape suit.” She dares the unexplained: “The wings were left ajar / At the altar where I’ve knelt all night, trembling, leaning, rough / As sugar raw, and sweet.” Each poem is a rebellious chain of words: “Be good, they said, and so too I was / Good until I was not.” Strange narratives, interior and exterior, make a world that is foreign and yet our own; like Dickinson, Brock-Broido constructs a spider-sibling, commanding the “silk spool of the recluse as she confects her eventual mythomania.” And why create the web? Because: “If it is written down, you can’t rescind it.”

Stay, Illusion: Poems, by Lucie Brock-Broido

From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Gorgeous and grim, elaborate yet forthright about the causes (and the effects) of its sadness, this fourth collection from Brock-Broido (Trouble in Mind) spins, drapes, and sculpts its virtuosic figures around the ideas and emotions of mourning. Often Brock-Broido commemorates her father, remembering him on his own, in her family, in conjunction with her own past selves: €œIf my own voice falters,€ one poem begins, €œtell them hubris was my way of adoring you.€ (Her title quotes Hamlet, addressing his father's ghost.) Long lines deliquesce; long titles and longer sentences mix ceremonial beauty with self-reproach, not only in the many poems that touch on the poet's family but also in the standouts that remember other events, not least the executions of Tookie Williams and other victims of the American death penalty. Part tapestry, part astronomy, part dollhouse, the metaphorical verve that has made Brock-Broido influential—and sometimes controversial—remains abundant: Brock-Broido envisions herself once €œIn a poplin nightgown and my mallow-color shoes,// With all my lionlikes about me,€ and again with €œmy own ivory hillocks, my toy/ Pram filled with slippery mice, my own mares fetlock-deep in squalls/ Of snow.€ And yet—even more than in her previous book (which remembered her mother)—Brock-Broido can grow stark, unornamented, directly moving, too. A poem about a dying body asks, €œPut your hands/ Into the sheets and tell me where the needles are,€ and a fine elegy for the poet Liam Rector concludes, simply, €œWould that our Liam were living still.€ (Oct.)

From Booklist Brock-Broido (Trouble in Mind, 2004) fills the page with long, sweeping lines, taking all the space she needs for her motley cotillions of jostling and twirling ideas and images. Her counterintuitive word choices and usage, sneaky metaphors, and reeled-in-from-afar allusions all somersault through the mind, sparking, flashing, and snapping us awake to a fresh form of attention. In her fourth book, her hopscotch imagination induces us to contemplate what is seen and what is overlooked, what is felt and what is denied. With a fingertip, a raised eyebrow, the touch of a divining rod, a whirled cloak, Brock-Broido sets poems in motion about nature corralled, animals indentured and slaughtered, and melting arctic ice that strands polar bears. The poet sees the world whole and netted. In Heat, she links girls in Belarus to Oswald and the Kennedy assassination to the open-carry gun law in Oklahoma—I just feel more safe, said Joe Wood, cocked / Among the waffles and the syrups and the diners. Like Jorie Graham and Laurie Sheck, Brock-Broido is brainy, alluring, inventive, witty, and tough. --Donna Seaman

By ZMan Stay, Illusion is Lucie Brock-Broido's latest collection of poetry. Here, we see the devastatingly beautiful mind of one of America's most gifted, lyrical and enchanting poets. Her gift of poetry and her depth of awareness is evident in each page of this brilliant and stunning collection. The elegy--an ancient and powerful form--is transformed by Lucie's pen and we as readers could never have imagined something more beautiful and poignant.Perhaps her greatest book in a career of amazing heights and firsts. Stay, Illusion is nominated for the National Book Award and may soon be the winner. All the best to Lucie and I am grateful to have a copy of this book in my hands. All true lovers of poetry must read these poems!

9 of 11 people found the following review helpful. disappointing for me By Vickie Newman I found this collection of poetry overly rife with clever wordplay. I wanted to feel moved &/or informed by something. It's the same for me with the visual arts. After a point, verbal wit serves only to decorate, in contrast to providing a meaningful experience.Take the line, "Whatever suffering is insufferable is punishable by perishable," from Dove, Interrupted.I'm not typically one to compare writers, but I'm going to make an exception here as I just finished reading two incredibly moving collections: "Remnants of Another Age," by Nikola Madzirov, and "The Descent," by Sophie Cabot Black. Here's a slice from Sophie Cabot Black's poem, "Lost": I am still here between the sun/That rises and the one that sets. To remain/Or go on. Which means to talk ...No wordplay here. Just travels straight to my heart. And of course this is subjective. And yet ...
