Dr. Bailey Coltrane wanted to have a child of her own. She was 26. She was an OB/GYN Doctor. She's never cooked, kept house or taken care of kids. She'd better get started. What better way than to accept a job as a nanny. The ad stated - No Experience Necessary. When she met Gib Harden at his home, she couldn't believe how sexy a man could be wearing a tool belt with baby care items in it. He had 3 children and it was a madhouse. There is so much fun and laughter in this story as you read how Bailey tries to cope with 3 wildly rambunctious children. Some of the things they get into are so funny. Poor Bailey never saw it coming. Being a Doctor did not help her. Gib was one of the nicest, most easy going male characters I've read about in a long time. A heart of pure gold. Patience of a saint. An attraction to Bailey that he shouldn't have. Laugh along as she attempts her first dinner. Changes her first diaper. So many other firsts...you will shake your head. Fun. This book is part of the "that's my baby series" and is a Silhouette Special Edition. Enjoy it. I know I did.

The characters are very likable, the h & h do not act like immature idiots, the children are charming and the mangaka, Junko Murakami's artwork is beautiful with solid, clean lines. The artwork is the main reason I purchased this manga and I'm so glad I did. I rate the artwork 4 stars. However, I can only rate the storyline as 3.5 stars as I felt the storyline had some holes. Not enough to turn me off this manga or regret purchasing it, though at the end of this manga I was left wanting more of the hero and heroine's story. Which just means I may have to buy the book itself!

Do you feel like there is something wrong with you just because you prefer to leave parties early?

Do you feel incredibly misunderstood if you... prefer to stay in on a Saturday night occasionally, or to spend time with yourself? And networking events - aren't they a nightmare!? I've been there, and it's frustrating trying to live up to something or someone that you just aren't. Instead of recognizing the strengths and weaknesses of an introvert, you just continually try and fail to fit in with who you think people want.

All you want to do is just take some time for yourself, damnit! Stop asking me if I'm tired or okay!

Speak Up! reflects the research and techniques I've implemented in my own introverted life to extend my social battery, command social situations, and generally fool everyone into thinking that I'm a major extrovert. Social confidence, winning friends, and conquering social anxiety is largely a function of recognizing that introverts have unique strengths, and at our best we can do everything an extrovert can do - and more!

What will you learn inside this book?

* How to increase your social battery so you never have to leave a gathering early again. * What you can do that an extrovert could never dream of. * How to have great conversations when you are socially exhausted. * Making sure that just because your battery is empty, you're not unapproachable or standoffish.

What else?

* How social goals can you make you feel socially confident and smash anxiety in one step. * The inevitable social dynamics when an introvert is around. * Dating, flirting, and deeper for introverts. The wallflower arrives and just hopes not to be noticed. They are forgettable, non-memorable, and don't make an impression. Learn to smash all those and more in this book. You'll be able to make an instant impression, and burn brighter and longer at any social situation. Never will you leave an event early, or be a downer by calling it quits. You'll be able to hang with the best of the extroverts, all while remaining yourself - and giving your personality the chance to shine with improved social graces and presence. Most importantly, you give yourself the opportunity to make meaningful connections that you wouldn't otherwise. Don’t hesitate to pick up your copy today by clicking the BUY NOW button at the top of this page!

P.S. Never feel like you have to be something you're not again!

The insights the author offers are valuable tools for the "working stiffs" of this world. I had to learn these things for myself. What I do know is that Patrick King is right on track with his observations and suggestions. The style is by an introvert for an introvert. His suggestions are right on track in my eyes, He is minimalist in his vocabulary and the first time through can be a quick read. I feel sure that Introverts reading will find themselves going back and studying in greater depth. The last couple of chapters are aimed at the dating crowd. I am WAY past that time in my life but I see many positives in his guidance.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. There ARE Perks to Being a Wallflower By ReaderAmy Being an introvert is frustrating and isolating, if not downright socially debilitating. After reading King's book, though, I can look at being an introvert in a completely new and healthy light. He breaks down the phases of an introvert's behavior and how to handle each situation, describing them clearly and with a refreshingly humorous bluntness that cries, "you're not socially awkward, but sometimes you just need a minute so you don't appear to be."Before I read this book, I assumed, as a result of years of unexplained introvert behavior, that I was just an anti-social jerk incapable of carrying out the simplest social niceties like conversing with a co-worker who occupies the same room I do. King's explanations and advice have given me a new outlook and a bittersweet appreciation of the introvert personality, as well as the extrovert, and I plan on putting his insightful suggestions into practice in every social situation I find myself in from here on out.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Patrick King has done it again! This book should be every introverts guide to a more furfilling social life! By Victoria As an introvert struggling with social anxiety, Speak up, was a must have for me! I try to pick up anything that can help me conquer my social anxiety, and so far Patrick King's titles have allowed me to overcome my struggles. What I love about Patrick King is that he can brilliantly write from the introverts prospective, not as someone claiming to be an introvert and then trying to tell you how to change yourself and no longer be an introvert, like some authors do, I won't mention any names, but I have had my share of dissapointing self-help titles! Rather than trying to force out the introvert in you, (which is impossible unless you never were an introvert) Patrick King speaks to the introvert inside and tries to allow you to expand your social experiences and interactions through specific mind exercises designed to build up your individual social repitoire. The theme of the book is doing all of these things on your own terms, and Patrick King does this effectively. This is another of many of his titles I have added to my collection that has allowed me to conquer my social anxiety and build my confidence and social life.

Texas True (The Tylers of Texas), by Janet Dailey

About the Author Janet Dailey's first book -- a Harlequin romance -- was published in 1976. In the twenty years since, she has written 89 more novels and become the third largest selling female author in the world, with 300 million copies of her books sold in 19 languages in 98 countries. Her most recent bestsellers, Masquerade, Rivals, and Heiress, have all sold more than one million copies each. She is known for her strong, decisive characters, her extraordinary ability to re-create a time and place, and her unerring courage to confront important, controversial issues, like alcoholism and sexual abuse, in her stories.

All of her novels are meticulously researched, an endeavor she shares with her husband, Bill Dailey. The couple met in 1963, when Janet worked as a secretary for the construction company Bill owned. The two travel extensively to scout story locations, and have visited all 50 states; these days, they are likely to fly, but miss the time when they drove cross country, a trailer attached to their car. Janet Dailey also reads voraciously about every aspect of any subject she writes about; as she remarks, "Accuracy is important in genre fiction; you have to get it right, zero in on the real details. That's the way to make writing come alive and not irritate the readers with carelessness."

When they are not traveling, the couple spend time at their home on the shore of Lake Taneycomo in Branson, Missouri. It is the part of the country Dailey loves best, partly because, she says, "The people around me are more interested in their problems and their lives, and that sort of keeps me in touch with reality. They think it's nice that I write, but they really couldn't care less."

Allison Janney has been featured on Broadway (Present Laughter), in films (Big Night and First Wives Club) and on television shows on all four networks.

I hope and pray she had more written about The Tylers before she passed away. I have every book she ever wrote from 1981 til now and am going to miss her terribly.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Jumpy By jspence It has been a really long time since I read Janet Dailey and I have to say I remember her writing being better than this. It seemed to jump from one scene to another without a transition and the female, while supposedly strong, isn't. Trying not to give anything away here, just not up to par as far as I am concerned. Will not be reading the rest.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. It's a keeper. By abmoser Very entertaining and interesting read. It moved along at a good pace to hold your interest make you not want to put it down. Just enough suspense.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Southern Sexy! By Karie Gibson I absolutely absolutely loved this series and so will you. It was love at first sight with Embry and Luke. Everyone knows love isn't easy or perfect get lost in this story and enjoy the ride. There will be many obstacles along the way. It's emotional heartwrenching but i love some of the funny banter and it will keep you turning the pages.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. so relatable By Katherine A I don't want to give away any spoilers so I'm going to keep it brief and a little vague. When I started reading this book I just knew it was going to be a roller coaster ride that I would both love and hate. I loved it because I loved the characters and their depth. And I hated it because I got so frustrated at times I wanted to scream and throw my kindle. The author did an amazing job of writing their story and I really felt like I was part of it. I could feel the heartbreak and the love they felt.Bree and Luke really are made for each other and the ups and downs they go through to reach their conclusion is just amazing. I gotta say for awhile there I was kinda hoping that Jer would be the love of Bree's life but after certain occurrences with him I'm so glad that he isn't.Not only did Embry and Luke have to deal with Jack they also had to deal with Sydney and the who student / professor thing to.This book will forever be ingrained in my mind because it was just so touching. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to feel like they are a part of a real life romance story that will take your breath away. There are no dominating alpha heros or swoony defenceless heroines in this book, just normal people that are easy to relate to and understand.I will definitely be adding this author to my authors to be read list and I hope you will too.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. 5 stars and more for Southern Sexy and Cute Butt!! By Hellen Wow! First book of this author and I can't help but wonder: where have I been?:)) I totally loved this series! What looked like an impossible love story in the first place due to the relationship professor-student, I realised with every page that it goes more than that. So, we have a love at first sight from the very beginning and the characters, Bree and Luke, start dating pretty fast. I was hoping to not see only hearts and flowers all the way, even if the author was putting it really nice and dreamy. Like in every couple, there are ups and downs and the characters not only will have to go against the relationship professor-student but also to people from their past which it will spice up the storyline in a delicious way. I strongly recommend the series! Enjoy!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Start reading at 8pm—and plan on a long night By John Emmerling Jed Falby's graphic book, telling a barely known true story of World War II, had me turning pages without a break—finished it in one sitting. Then had this compelling thought: "What an extraordinary hero—this fellow Michel Hollard!" He joined the French wartime resistance then took on the dangerous (5-star danger) mission of singlehandedly scouting by bicycle the heavily guarded Nazi V-1 missile-launching sites being secretly constructed around Normandy. Michel's descriptions and locations of launch sites are passed along to British agents in Berne when he bikes and hikes—98 times!—back and forth across the border between France and Switzerland. Using Michel's maps and detailed information, English bombers pinpoint the hidden locations and cluster bomb many of the launch sites while still under construction. Hitler is frustrated in his plan to rain destruction down upon London! The Nazis struggle to repair the sites and finally begin a delayed-and-weakened V-1 blitz just after D-Day 1944—but thanks to the British bombing at least a hundred V-1s (each "doodlebug” carried a ton of TNT) have been squashed on their launch pads. Thousands of Londoners are spared death and injury—including, possibly, author Falby who was a young lad living in London at the time. Falby's bold, sometimes stark, drawings will pull you into Michel Hollard's compelling story; the simplified and explanatory sketches of things (like the V-1 rocket itself) will fascinate without overcomplicating. The book moves along like a fast train, a startling work of black and white ink drawings with frequent bright splashes of yellow and red. Highly recommended for a thrilling evening’s journey back through time.John Emmerling, NYC

THE FRENCHMAN WHO SAVED LONDON By M Slosberg I've been a fan of Illustrated Novels ever since I discovered Will Eisner's incredible visual storytelling. And so it was, with great anticipation, that I dove into Jed Falby's World War II story, "Le Train De Michel," a very personal, suspenseful and beautifully rendered tale––both written and illustrated by Mr. Falby. Falby, a British child during the Second World War, was evacuated from his home several times when his home city of London was blitzed and then again, right after D-Day, when the German V-1 rockets rained down indiscriminately in Hitler's desperate dying effort to defeat the Allies. With masterful story-telling, Falby imagines an anachronistic meeting with the book's hero, Michel Hollard as he is laboring in a Nazi concentration camp. Using flashback as his device, Falby relates the harrowing story of how Hollard, risking everything to do “what’s right,” starts spying on the Germans who have occupied his beloved Paris. His awkward beginnings as an untrained “agent” soon evolve into a full-blown network of loyalists who become the key to uncovering Hitler's plans to shower death onto London with the V-1 rockets, colloquially called “Doodlebugs.” Le Train De Michel is one of those fascinating true stories about heroic accomplishments, which lay dormant until the curiosity [and talent] of a Jed Falby pries one like a fine pearl from the shell of history.

Le Train De Michel is that rare book that uses hand drawn pictures to tell its story. Sure there are words but the pentel of Mr Falby does it's best work with emotion charged frames that draw you into the story itself. And what a story. A single, motivated Frenchman, Michel Hollard, who only wanted to do what's right, manages to supply British Intelligence with information which ultimately helps the Royal Air Force destroy targets in the Normandy region of France where Hitler's terrible weapon of mass destruction, the V! buzz bomb, was launched. Thanks to Monsieur Hollard and his band of Patriots, much vital information was gathered right under the Nazi's noses. It didn't spare London completely from the Buzz bombs but it cut the numbers down considerably. The author, himself, as a young child was evacuated four times from London to escape the terrible losses Londoners sustained from the bombings.I highly recomend this wonderful book.Ken LicataScotch Plains, NJ

Crassostrea virginica, the eastern oyster. These humble bivalves are the living bones of the Chesapeake and the ecological and historical lifeblood of the region. When colonists first sailed these impossibly abundant shores, they described massive shoals of foot-long oysters. But the bottomless appetite of the Gilded Age and great fleets of skipjacks took their toll. Disease, environmental pressures and overconsumption decimated the population by the end of the twentieth century. While Virginia turned to bottom-leasing, passionate debate continues in Maryland among scientists and oystermen whether aquaculture or wild harvesting is the better way forward. Today, boutique oyster farming in the Bay is sustainably meeting the culinary demand of a new generation of connoisseurs. With careful research and interviews with experts, author Kate Livie presents this dynamic story and a glimpse of what the future may hold.

Thomas With lyrical prose and impeccable research, this book serves as THE definitive resource about the Chesapeake oyster. One would think a book written about a humble bivalve would certainly be informative, but perhaps not a book that would fly off the shelves. Livie's book, however, proves this assumption wrong-- reading like historical fiction-- I found myself forgetting I was reading non-fiction. The author's uncanny ability to pull the reader into the context of the time period and weave a narrative tale made this a page turner that I finished in two days. In particular, the chapters about the Jamestown settlers felt as though I'd hopped in a time machine as Livie described the daily life, smells and missteps of these intrepid colonists.Growing up on the Eastern Shore, I've always enjoyed seafood, and oysters in particular, but I never understood the importance of their role in shaping not only the lives and land of the Chesapeake region, but the United States as a whole. As the book weaves its tale to present times, and the oyster becomes a source of intense political contention, Livie painstakingly presents multiple sides of the issue, interviewing watermen, elected officials, environmentalist and oyster farmers.Although the issue of oyster sustainability both as a possible solution to clean up the Bay and as a viable fishery continues to be a hot button issue, the author ends the book with a note of hope, offering a synopsis on how both of these goals could be accomplished.I sincerely hope this author continues to write more books about Chesapeake-related subjects, because it's clear that is where her passion lies.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A worthwhile biography of the Chesapeake Bay oyster---Highly recommended By Amazon Customer In this enlightening and honest account of the Chesapeake oyster, Kate Livie skillfully navigates the history of a bivalve that is immersed in controversy more turbid than the waters of the Chesapeake Bay itself. The opening chapters serve as a reminder of the biological and historical importance of the oyster and later chapters address the deep seeded reasons for the passionate debates about the economic, cultural, and environmental implications for our region. Kate brings each of these aspects together through her extensive research. Carefully selected from every side of the oyster conversation, the Chesapeake people highlighted in her book provide readers with the continuum of the oyster discussion. From the oyster wars of the past, to the legislative battles of modern times, to the balance between the wild fishery and oyster farming, Kate has done her research. Whether the reader is deeply immersed in current oyster discussions or simply interested in the origins of a tasty delicacy, this book makes the oyster conversation accessible to everyone. Ultimately, the book serves as a valuable reminder that the future of the Chesapeake Bay oyster is entwined with the decisions that we make as inhabitants of the region.Within my collection of Chesapeake Bay books, I put this one on the top shelf, and I am proud to say it was purchased with money made in today's oyster industry. I feel I owe that privilege to Kate, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, and others who see the importance of the Bay's oyster to our environment, culture, and economy. Highly recommended.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A really wonderful read. By M. Ford I savored this book as if I were consuming the delectable oysters it describes. Deliciously written, using lyrical language to honestly present the complex ties between man and this “simple” marine staple, “Chesapeake Oysters” presents a thoroughly convincing treatise on one of the defining commodities in our history. If you are interested in history, especially that of the Chesapeake Bay, this book is a must. But more importantly, it is an interesting tale, well told, with wit and intelligence and an obvious attention to research. A really wonderful read.

It is my belief that all men can change the course of their lives. By our imagination, by our affirmations, we can change our world, we can change our future. I have always preached that if we strive passionately to embody a new and higher concept of ourselves, then all things will be at our service. Most men are totally unaware of the creative power of imagination and invariably bow before the dictates of “facts” and accepts life on the basis of the world without. But when you discover this creative power within yourself, you will boldly assert the supremacy of imagination and put all things in subjection to it.

I read this book and for me it seems to be like ok I think this is it kinda thing. I think there is really two ideas in this book and i think the two ideas work together. One of the ideas was clearly explained and that one idea might be good enough to work but to me there is another idea he does clearly mentioned but he doesn't give you exercises for. I learned exercise from another book...

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This book succeeds on many levels. By Ma. Antonia Amorsolo I've read numerous books on communication, body language, and charisma over the years and by far this is the most actionable I've read in a very long time. Not only does Holly Grant lays out a step by step action plan to follow but does so while walking you through his personal journey of transformation. I've been an introvert for an awfully long time but I've been practicing Holly's stuff over, and I truly became more charismatic every day. My conversations are improving, I'm making more friends and just enjoying life a lot more. That being said, this is not a magic bullet. You have to actually do the exercises to reap the results, and it takes time. Building your personality is just like building any other muscle. It takes time to reach your full potential.

International award winner David Almond draws on memories of his early years in Tyneside, England, for a moving coming-of-age novel, masterfully told.A gentle visionary coming of age in the shadow of the shipyards of northern England, Dominic Hall is torn between extremes. On the one hand, he craves the freedom he feels when he steals away with the eccentric girl artist next door, Holly Stroud—his first and abiding love—to balance above the earth on a makeshift tightrope. With Holly, Dom dreams of a life different in every way from his shipbuilder dad’s, a life fashioned of words and images and story. On the other hand, he finds himself irresistibly drawn to the brutal charms of Vincent McAlinden, a complex bully who awakens something wild and reckless and killing in Dom. In a raw and beautifully crafted bildungsroman, David Almond reveals the rich inner world of a boy teetering on the edge of manhood, a boy so curious and open to impulse that we fear for him and question his balance—and ultimately exult in his triumphs.

The Tightrope Walkers, by David Almond

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Dominic Hall is the son of a shipbuilder, living in modest conditions in mid-20th century England. As he grows up, he finds himself torn between two influences—the dreamy intellectual artist girl next door and the brutal outcast boy who seems to cultivate a darker side of Dominic's nature. His coming-of-age is marked by the ramifications of his choices between the two. The Tightrope Walkers is a tour de force. Almond's gifted prose sets readers firmly in the grim, gray-skied setting of a post-World War II British town inhabited by deeply layered and well-crafted characters. The use of a thick working-class dialect for many of the protagonists yields immersive dialogue that might have been off-putting in a lesser author's hands. Dominic's development takes place among moments of overwhelming bleakness and his experiences with the redemptive powers of human connection and art. The balance between these is precarious and realistic, and the span of years encompassed by the book flies by. The novel is by turns reminiscent of classic bildungsromans such as the Billy Elliott film, Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird and Stephen King's IT, yet it retains a distinctive heart and voice of its own. While instances of violence are eventually tempered, it is best suited for mature readers. An absolute must-have.—Erinn Black Salge, Saint Peter's Prep, Jersey City, NJ

Review The text overflows with sensory detail that lifts clean off the page the stink of the oil from the ship’s dark tank and the scratch of Dom’s pen as he writes his way free of his father’s hard life. Almond’s rough, beautiful world of books and ships, sinners and saints is a lyrical reminder of how, when we lose our equilibrium, art can redeem us.—The New York TimesA tour de force. ... The novel is by turns reminiscent of classic bildungsromans such as the Billy Elliott film, Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird and Stephen King’s IT, yet it retains a distinctive heart and voice of its own. ... An absolute must-have.—School Library Journal (starred review)The award-winning Almond poetically plumbs the depths of his 1950s and '60s childhood to explore themes of violence, war, God, creativity, beauty, death, art, the soul, our animal selves, whether we ever grow up or can really know each other…in short, life.—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)In a powerfully realistic bildungsroman from award-winning author Almond (The True Tale of the Monster Billy Dean), Dominic Hall, the son of a working man from Newcastle, seems destined for greater success than was possible for his ill-educated and often angry father.... Almond’s characteristic penetrating writing and finely drawn characters are on full display in a story more fully grounded in a specific and important historical moment than anything he has published heretofore.—Publishers Weekly (starred review)Some books stand out for their characters, others for their sense of place, and some for their stories and themes. Almond has a facility for all those elements. The two most sharply drawn characters here are Vincent, as polluted as the Tyne but a force of nature nonetheless, and, rather surprisingly, Mr. Hall.... Teens will feel the events most viscerally—the brutishness, the love, the rejections. Adults, meanwhile, will bring their own world-weary self-knowledge, which cuts in its own way. Wild and reckless, heartbreaking and hopeful—this elegy on life is not to be missed.—Booklist (starred review)The novel is Shakespearean in its breadth, earthiness, and emotional pitch. A mysterious tramp who wanders in and out of the narrative—unspeaking, benevolent, holy—is like a precursor of Skellig. It ends with a wedding and a newborn baby, but that final section is a Rorschach test for the reader. Is the overall mode comedic or tragic? There is much room for discussion in this difficult and brilliant novel.—Horn Book (starred review)In prose that reads like richly imagistic poetry, Dom sorts through what it means to walk a metaphorical tightrope, caught between social classes, between his mother’s dreams and his father’s fears, between his gentler, creative nature and his attraction to the rough camaraderie of outlaw boys and working men. The interplay between the characters and their environments results in a stunningly human and humanizing story. This is by far Almond’s best work to date, and in light of the awards he’s already accrued, that’s saying something—Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books (starred review)Almond's magnetic narrative conveys the sounds and heat of the shipyards, the smells of the circus tent where Dom and Holly see the tightrope walkers, the quality of the light at sunset after a satisfying day. And he tells of the tightrope humans walk between social divides, sanity and insanity, faith and doubt, friendship and sex, what we're born to, what we can rise above--and what traps us. Mesmerizing.—Shelf Awareness (starred review)Almond invites readers into the hearts and minds of these characters through authentic dialogue and rich description. This is a haunting tale of the kind of conflict and tension that is just right for young adults.—Literacy Daily

Deeply personal coming-of-age story about family, social class, love and the artistic life in THE TIGHTROPE WALKERS By Teen Reads In THE TIGHTROPE WALKERS, David Almond writes a deeply personal coming-of-age story about family, social class, love and the artistic life --- all couched in exquisitely lovely prose.Every once in a while, I am assigned to review a book whose prose is so close to perfect that I'm tempted to simply string together a series of excerpts so potential readers can dive into the language themselves rather than wade through my comparatively clumsy attempts to distill the book's plot and themes. So, just to get things out of my system, let's start with a passage from David Almond's THE TIGHTROPE WALKERS about the coming of spring: "We wanted to walk and run with confidence across the earth. Wanted the sun to haul itself up from its sullen place low over the horizon, to get into the air above us and bliddy shine. Which it started to do of course. For the world turns, and keeps on turning, no matter how things might feel in the darkest of times. And carpets of ice on ponds retreated, and flowers of frost on windows faded, and pipes burst and homes were flooded, and gardens turned to muddy patches, and the whole world started to relax, to sigh."Winter in the narrator's northern industrial hometown of Newcastle, England, can seem particularly brutal, much like the city itself, which is dominated by the shipbuilding industry that employs most of the housing estate's fathers and sons (at least Dominic's part of it, anyway). Dominic's father is one of the blue-collar workers in the shipyards, but Dominic --- a quietly observant boy with a knack for putting words to paper ---dreams of a different sort of life for himself. These dreams become especially vivid when Dominic befriends his neighbor Holly, the artistically dreamy daughter of a draughtsman at the shipyard, whose quirkiness and ambitions for higher things are symbolized by her ambition to learn to walk a tightrope.Dominic is drawn to the lifestyle and aspirations hinted at by Holly and her family, but he is equally drawn to another kid from the neighborhood, Vincent McAlinden, a brutish but charismatic bully who both infuriates and fascinates Dominic. Vincent's aspirations are for cruelty and destruction, and in his darkest moments, Dominic is easily swayed toward joining Vincent in his deeds. The direction Dominic ultimately chooses will depend in large part on the kind of future he imagines for himself --- and the relationships he develops as a young person may in turn change that imagined future in ways no one could have foreseen. "We grow in order to discover ourselves," says one character. "But maybe we just discover ways of hiding our selves from ourselves." Throughout the book, Dominic finds himself grappling with what the nature of that true self truly is.THE TIGHTROPE WALKERS is, at times, not an easy book to read. It includes scenes of cruelty and violence, including rape and the killing of animals. But, side by side with these gruesome scenes are passages of exquisite beauty. This juxtaposition is, of course, no accident --- it mirrors how Dominic experiences life. When Dominic sees his possible future --- particularly his literary talent and ambitions --- as being at odds with his working-class background, he gets in danger of losing himself. But, when he can reconcile the two, his life makes a lot more sense: "writing books must be like making ships, welding words and pages in pursuit of an elusive image of the finished perfect thing." THE TIGHTROPE WALKERS is both brutal and romantic, realistic and fantastical --- and it offers a coming-of-age story that won't soon be forgotten.Reviewed by Norah Piehl

Beautifully Written, Coming of Age YA Novel By Annette Lamb THE TIGHTROPE WALKERS by David Almond is the coming-of-age story of a boy torn between two very different friendships in the mid-20th century. While Holly represents artist freedom, Vincent reflects the wild, violent side of life.Based on the memories of the author growing up in northern England, this work of realistic fiction is told through very short chapters making it a quick read. The well-developed characters, use of local dialects, and authentic settings add to the appeal. Although technically a work of historical fiction, the story transcends time. From beauty and creativity to violence and death, Almond’s exploration of both the dark and light side of everyday life make this book special. The novel’s many metaphors and other literary elements make it an excellent book for young adult discussions. However because of the mature themes this book is not designed for children.Published by Candlewick Press in March 2015.

Walking a Fine Line By Making Good Stories Childhood relationships are tenuous, fragile things--you can so easily go from best friends to mortal enemies, and vice versa. In The Tightrope Walkers, a bildungsroman by David Almond, the relationships between friends is explored while the narrator grows into a young man.Set in northern England, Dominic Hall has conflicting relationships with a boy and a girl in his neighborhood. With the older Vincent McAlinden, there is a brutish element to the relationship that easily crosses the line into bullying territory. With the artistically inclined Holly Stroud, Dominic dares to improve his writing skill and dream of fanciful things, including a life different from his father's. Coming to a balance between the opposing forces in his life, Dominic grows from boyhood into manhood while trying to keep himself part of both friends' worlds. The text is filled with nice language and description, one such element being the depiction of the northern dialect to provide a more realistic image of the characters to complement the grittiness of the story's events. The narrative is paced rather rapidly due to the somewhat brief chapters, which keeps readers moving forward to see how Dominic evolves. Maintaining a sense of wonder and aspiration are two of the larger takeaways that seem to come from the story as both Holly and Vincent encourage Dominic to be better and dream larger. There were some clues provided in the text to place the story in time, yet it seems as if it is a timeless sort of story about life, growing up, and finding yourself and place in the world.

17 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Is life an affliction? By A Customer Edgar Saltus' "The Philosophy of Disenchantment" is a refreshing, unique look at the nature of life, told from a Schopenhauerian perspective. Saltus, having drawn from sources as diverse as Voltaire and the Bible, makes the point that this is far from being the "best of all possible worlds." Rather, life is, in Saltus' estimation, a grievous burden to be borne. Saltus terms his view "scientific pessimism," a world-view brought into popular notice by Arthur Schopenhauer, 19th century German philosopher. He uses Schopenhauer as his main reference point, even devoting chapter two exclusively to this misanthropic genius. It is Saltus' (as it was Schopenhauer's) quest to challenge the blind optimism which not only pervaded 19th century society, but had been the most widely held world view since time began. What makes "The Philosophy of Disenchantment" so interesting is that it questions things which are not supposed to be questioned (namely, the value of life), and, with uncompromising logic, directly challenges the beliefs and values which have been held sacrosanct by mainstream society. It does this tastefully, while holding the reader's attention with Saltus' flowing, poetic writing style. The beauty of the writing provides a brilliant contrast with the dark, sometimes even depressing aspects of the subject matter being discussed. I would highly recommend this book to any serious student of philosophy, as well as anyone who is open to questioning the value and nature of existence.

This book is a survey of today's (2015) state of play between creation science and evolutionary philosophy, quoting evolutionists' own admissions in scientific journals. Sources are given to enable the reader to pursue matters further. The author considers big bang-dark matter-multiverse ideas, first life from chemicals - space, what 'junk DNA' actually does, design in the biosphere and rates of sedimentation and fossilization. Origins theories cannot be falsified since they deal with unrepeatable history, when no historians were there. We must draw conclusions based on known laws and the evidence. For example, the first state of the universe must have had a high state of orderliness, because all subsequent changes, according the the entropy law, involve a loss of order and information. An explosion of everything from nothing cannot provide that order. The author has a doctorate from Bristol University. He has lectured on Creation in a score of UK universities and 17 countries from Moscow to San Francisco.

A long-awaited volume By Amazon Customer There are few authors today who have David Rosevear’s breadth of knowledge on this subject - and little wonder. He has been at the forefront of the Creation/evolution debate far longer than most, and that knowledge and experience shine out in this volume. To see how he hoists the evolution camp on its own proverbial petard is a joy and education, and I cannot recommend this book too highly. If it’s coherent and clearly expressed argument for the facts of Creation that you want, then you will find it here. It is a veritable mine of information.

Governor Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, a much-talked-about 2016 presidential candidate, offers fourteen lessons from our nation’s past and discusses how they can be used to restore American courage, faith, and wisdom.Nearly forty-five years ago, Bobby Jindal’s parents left their home in rural India—a place with no electricity or running water—to build a new life in the United States. Every day, Jindal’s father told him, “You should be grateful that you were blessed to be born in the greatest country in the history of the world”—a country where the son of poor immigrants could grow up to become the governor of Louisiana. For Jindal, this defining experience bolsters a profound belief in American exceptionalism: Freedom is not just the American way, it’s the American will. As we approach the next great turning point in this extraordinary nation’s remarkable history, Jindal brings to life inspiring stories from our country’s past that have influenced his beliefs and the indispensable lessons each can teach us about our future. Stories such as the stalwart senator who galvanized the public against Hillary Clinton’s costly and oppressive socialist health-care proposal in the early 1990s; the entrepreneur whose dogged determination ushered in a worldwide energy revolution, and with it technological innovation and economic growth; and the Founding Father who refused to “lead from behind” and instead used his vision for the nascent nation’s vast potential and the best interests of its people to outwit a greedy dictator. In the next election, we can continue down the current destructive path of big government, emboldened enemies, diminished liberties, and hostility to religious faith. Or we can embrace the values that have always propelled America to the top: limited government; free people and free markets; strength and exceptionalism; and the essential role of religious faith in effecting change. American power is precious, and our vital interests and those of our allies depend on strong leadership. Whom will we choose: a cynic or a statesman, a politician or a problem solver? The dramatic tales in American Will illuminate the courage, faith, and vision that we need in 2016—and the government folly, corruption, and myopia that jeopardize our future.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. American Will 1INDIVIDUAL LIBERTYThe Antifederalists and the Fight for a Bill of Rights Americans will elect a new president in 2016. We will choose from candidates with different backgrounds, records, and ideologies. But there’s one thing you can bet they’ll all have in common: Every single one of them will praise, with great feeling and fervor, American freedom. We hear the word “freedom” tossed about so frequently by politicians that it rarely means what it once meant to the patriots who declared the right to it inalienable in 1776 and who secured it on bloody battlefields from Lexington to Yorktown. The next time you hear politicians invoking American freedom, ask yourself: Do they mean what our founding fathers meant? Do they even understand what the founders meant? Do they care? Leaders cannot be expected to defend principles they do not understand. It is the job of each of us, particularly those of us in public office, to remember, first, where our freedoms come from, and, second, how and why the most sacred of those freedoms were written into the Bill of Rights of our Constitution. For a story of the former—where our freedoms come from—I would recommend the Bible, because we were endowed with our inalienable rights “by our Creator.” But for a look back at the latter—how and why those freedoms found protection in our Bill of Rights—read on. It’s the topic of this chapter. There’s an old saying: Winners write the history books. And because the men who wrote and advocated for the Constitution succeeded in securing its ratification, history tends to remember them as white knights, and their opponents, dubbed the “antifederalists,” as the villains. But that is an oversimplification. Many antifederalists wanted to ratify the Constitution, but only if it included a Bill of Rights to provide explicit protection for liberties such as free speech, the free exercise of religion, the right to keep and bear arms, and the enduring role of states and state governments.1 Arrayed against the antifederalists’ demand for a Bill of Rights were such federalists as George Washington, James Madison, and Alexander Hamilton. I have great respect for the federalists. In a way, they were the more idealistic of the two groups. I wish they had been correct in their belief that the structural protections of the Constitution would prevent the excessive growth of federal government at the expense of individual liberty and states’ rights. But I have a soft spot in my heart for the antifederalists. In the end, they were the side that was right. From a modern-day perspective—with the EPA threatening the economies of Louisiana and most other states by imposing job-killing regulations on our industries, with the Justice Department suing Louisiana to block school choice, and with the Obama administration waging a war on the free exercise rights of religious Americans—anyone can see that the federal government has grown beyond what anyone in the founding generation could have imagined. It is the realization of the antifederalists’ worst fears. The antifederalists’ concerns about government remain our concerns. Does the federal government have too much power? Will leaders hundreds and thousands of miles away from constituents truly represent their interests? How secure are our God-given civil liberties? What follows is the unlikely story of how a band of largely forgotten Americans fought for a Bill of Rights; how they won far more than they lost in the struggle over the Constitution’s ratification; and how they are responsible for the protection of the rights that have defined the American experience for more than two centuries. This is their story.July 17, 1788—State Ratifying Convention, Poughkeepsie, New York One month into the state of New York’s convention to consider the ratification of the United States Constitution, Alexander Hamilton rose to deliver the most important speech of a life that had begun on a distant island in the Caribbean. There, he had seen the cruelty of slavery, and he had in turn developed a hatred of oppression. But it was also on the island of St. Croix that young Hamilton had been orphaned, and he had, perhaps as a result, learned to long for order, the kind of order children take for granted when their loving parents protect them. So, when Hamilton rose to address New York’s ratifying convention, he brought with him a love for freedom from slavery and from chaos; for liberty and order; for independence and union. Union was very much on his mind this day. With so many states having already ratified the Constitution, Hamilton was sure that if his home state of New York voted not to ratify, it would be voting itself out of the Union. But could one of the most forceful advocates for a new, stronger federal government and an architect of the Constitution persuade his colleagues? In the first month of the convention, all evidence suggested that his opponents at the convention outnumbered him by more than two to one. Hamilton began his speech by blasting the Constitution’s opponents for claiming to represent “our spirit of ’76.” He reminded them of the dark days that preceded America’s independence, when it was ruled by a king “three thousand miles off,” when Americans “had no share in the representation,” and when the British “claimed absolute power over us.” How could anyone compare that tyranny to the government proposed by the Constitution, which was “built on all the principles of free government”? His opponents were looking at the Constitution “only to find out the defects and not to discover its securities—and beauties.”2 This, however, was familiar ground. Hamilton had been tirelessly defending the Constitution’s “beauties” at the convention and in New York’s editorial pages (under his Federalist Papers’ pseudonym, Publius). Thus far, at least in upstate New York, those arguments had largely fallen on deaf ears. Hamilton knew he needed to play his ace in the hole. Rather than defending the Constitution’s merits, he would paint a vivid picture of the chaos and disorder that would follow a vote against ratification. New York would be “out of the Union.” The state would be alone, with the nation’s “power of government” and “the wealth of the whole country against us.” New York City, whose inhabitants supported the Constitution and the trade that would come with it, would “warmly attach” to the federal government, depriving the state of “our port—the chief source of wealth.” Upstate New York’s isolation would require, ironically in light of opponents’ invocation of the “spirit of ’76,” an “alliance with Britain.” But even if Britain agreed to an alliance, “Who would wish again to come under her dominion?” New York could bid “adieu to liberty.” Only “despotism will follow.” There was, though, an alternative, and supporting it were “distinguished patriots” who commanded far more admiration than the controversial Hamilton could ever hope to. “Hancock,” for example. The first man to sign the Declaration of Independence. And “Adams,” who “first conceived the bold idea of independence. He is for it.” So was “Franklin—this old grey-headed patriot looking into the grave.” These surnames—there was no need for first names, not with men as famous as Hancock, Adams, and Franklin—carried with them the history of an infant nation’s audacious defiance of taxes and tyranny. To oppose the Constitution was to oppose them—and that history. But Hamilton saved the best for last. There was another advocate for the Constitution. A man whom “all parties . . . admired and put confidence in.” A man who “at the close of the war” was “at the head of a discontented Army” that would have made him a dictator if he had only said the word. But “did he take advantage of the situation of the army or country? No. He proved himself a patriot” by retiring to Mount Vernon. And last year, “This man came forward again and hazarded his harvest of glory,” because “he saw the work he had been engaged in was but half finished.” His name, of course, was “Washington.” Having invoked the names of America’s most treasured patriots, as one might invoke saints in prayer, Hamilton asked, “Is it in human nature to suppose that these good men should loose [sic] their virtue and acquiesce in a government that is substanically [sic] defective to the liberties of their country?” To consider the question was to answer it.3 When Hamilton finished, according to The Daily Advertiser, “tears” filled the eyes of “most of the audience.”4 That audience included spectators who had, for a month, hung on Hamilton’s every word. But it also included antifederalist delegates, and The Daily Advertiser did not report on the tears—or absence of tears—in their eyes. They were still as opposed to Hamilton and the Constitution as they had been when he began. Or at least, they appeared to be. There was, however, at least one opponent, the most prominent antifederalist, in fact, who was having second thoughts. This delegate may well have found Hamilton’s words as moving as did the teary-eyed spectators in the galleries. It was now clear they could no longer stand in the way of a new Constitution to govern a new nation. But it looked as if they would get a Bill of Rights that would alleviate their concerns about the need to preserve individual and state rights. The delegate was the leader of the opposition: a simple man with a funny name, largely unsung by history, with a crucial role to play in the destiny of the American republic. With Hamilton’s eloquence still ringing in his ears, Melancton Smith rose, looked out across the convention floor, and spoke words as critical to the fate of the American union as any in the next seventy-three years, until a prairie lawyer from Illinois delivered his first Inaugural Address. If the man looked tired, his eyes rimmed with dark circles and his long hair unruly, it was understandable. The fight for liberty had taken its toll on Smith and his fellow antifederalists.Ten Months Earlier, September 29, 1787—Philadelphia, Pennsylvania The nation’s ratification debate began ignominiously, when four men burst through the doors of Major Alexander Boyd’s boardinghouse. The targets of their pursuit were two men—James M’Calmont and Jacob Miley. They were dragged from the house by force and taken through the Philadelphia streets. Their clothes were torn and their temperatures boiling. These men were not petty criminals, but Pennsylvania legislators. And their pursuers weren’t police officers, but with the legislature’s sergeant-at-arms, who was ordered to apprehend M’Calmont and Miley at any cost. Both men were skeptics of the proposed U.S. Constitution—part of a group derisively named the “antifederalists” by their opponents. Their absence from the proceedings of Pennsylvania’s legislature was intentional; the men hoped that there would not be a sufficient number of legislators present—a quorum—to allow a vote to go forward on creating a state convention for the Constitution’s ratification. Two weeks earlier, in this very city, delegates to the Constitutional Convention had finished their work. After a summer of debate and division, they had signed their names to a Constitution that replaced the Articles of Confederation, a governing structure put in place after the Revolutionary War that had proven disastrous. Under the Articles of Confederation, state governments had wrecked the American economy with policies that caused inflation (by printing their own paper currencies) and frightened investors (by refusing to require debtors to abide by the conditions of their contracts). With no president, no federal courts, and no power to pass laws directly binding on the American people, the national government had no ability to correct these catastrophic policies or to quiet violent rebellions by desperate and destitute farmers ruined by the anemic economy.5 What had happened at the Constitutional Convention that summer promised salvation from the chaos and near-anarchy of the Articles of Confederation—but only if the required nine of thirteen states agreed to ratify the draft Constitution. And largely because many liberty-loving citizens were hesitant to adopt a Constitution whose framers had failed to include explicit guarantees of Americans’ most sacred civil liberties to protect them from an all-powerful central government, ratification was far from certain. This was what motivated M’Calmont and Miley—they feared approval of a document that might very well bring another George III to power in America. When they arrived at the State House, M’Calmont demanded to “be dismissed from the house.”6 But the other forty-four legislators gathered there wouldn’t hear of it. They needed forty-six legislators to make the quorum. These two men weren’t going anywhere. Suddenly, M’Calmont made a bolt for the exit. “Stop him!” spectators in the legislature’s gallery called out.7 After the crowd at the door physically blocked M’Calmont’s attempted escape, the majority voted to hold elections for the state’s ratifying convention as soon as possible—on the first Tuesday in November—with the convention itself to begin two weeks later. And with that, the final action on the final day of the Pennsylvania legislature, the fight to ratify the United States Constitution had begun. It had not been pretty. It had not been fair. But it was a harbinger of things to come.
