The World of Peter Rabbit 23 Vol Box Set White Jacket: The Complete Collection Of Original Tales 1-23, by Beatrix Potter

Amazon.com Review "I cannot draw you a picture of Peter and Benjamin underneath the basket," writes Beatrix Potter in The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, "because it was quite dark, and because the smell of onions was fearful; it made Peter Rabbit and little Benjamin cry." Beatrix Potter's animal stories, the first of which was published in 1902, have been a joy to generations of young readers. This deluxe volume collects all of Beatrix Potter's 23 Peter Rabbit tales and verses together--complete and unabridged--in one book. All the original illustrations, both color and black and white, are included. The stories are arranged in the order in which they were first published to enable them to be read in the proper sequence, from A Tale of Peter Rabbit to The Tale of Little Pig Robinson. Beatrix Potter's tales were often connected with real places, people, or animals, so each story also includes a brief introductory note about its history. For example, "The story of naughty Peter Rabbit in Mr. McGregor's garden first appeared in a picture letter Beatrix Potter wrote to Noel Moore, the young son of her former governess, in 1893." In addition to the original 23 tales, this edition contains two early narrative picture sequences, Three Little Mice and The Rabbit's Christmas Party. And, there are two charming little stories, The Sly Old Cat and The Fox and the Stork, which were originally intended to be worked up into books, but remained unpublished. This beautiful introduction to the world of Beatrix Potter is sure to remain on the family bookshelf for generations to come. (Baby to Preschool)

About the Author Beatrix Potter is regarded as one of the world's best-loved children's authors of all time. From her first book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit (1902) she went on to create a series of stories based around animal characters including Mrs Tiggy-winkle, Mr Jeremy Fisher and Tom Kitten. Her humorous, lively tales and beautiful illustrations have become a natural part of childhood. A source of inspiration was the Lake District where she lived for the last thirty years of her life as a farmer and conservationist.

From AudioFile This delightful production of the classic TALES OF BEATRIX POTTER is more suitable for older children and adults than for little listeners. There are several reasons for this: The pretty package is decorated with Beatrix Potter's drawings, but offers no other illustrations; the CD technology, in comparison with tapes, is inaccessible to young children and does not lend itself to a series of short tales written for little ones; finally, the first CD begins with a fascinating brief biography of Potter, something of more interest to adults than children. That said, Nadia May's dramatization is very good. Peter Rabbit is young and reckless, Squirrel Nutkin as rude as can be, the cats sound dangerous, and the mice in the "Tailor of Gloucester"--well, they sound just like most sociable mice I know. As with the packaging, May's reading is geared to older listeners, for while it's not fast, neither is it toddler-page-turning slow. A beautiful edition of wonderful stories with glorious illustrations By Craig Matteson This book is a treasure and every home should have a copy on their shelf. You will have children and grandchildren to read the stories to. And, for heaven's sake, you can read and enjoy them as an adult. These are children's stories, to be sure, but they are very charming, the language is pleasant and better than most of what is fobbed off as "children's literature" today. And the paintings and drawings are glorious. These stories have been in print for a century because they are so special. The animals are fantasies, yes, but Beatrix Potter was also a keen observer of animals and nature. I love how, in Nutkin, she has the squirrels bring the owl different gifts of animals to eat in exchange for gathering nuts on his island. However, she has the squirrels building rafts and traveling over the water to the island! My granddaughter loved this story and laughed very hard at how silly Nutkin is.This treasury also has a short note at the beginning of each story about its origins and the Miss Potter's life at the time it was created. Nutkin, for example, is based on the musings of an old lady who lived on the island and thought they squirrels came from all around when the nuts were ripe. She enjoyed thinking they came on little rafts. We also learn that "The Tailor of Gloucester" was her personal favorite among her stories, and it is easy to understand why.The stories range from those with few words to some with many words and fewer drawings. None of them are tremendously long. Readers of all abilities can find something to tackle. In fact, those who can't read yet should be given the opportunity to "read" you the story they see in the pictures. What fun that is!Another wonderful thing is how the characters make reappearances, but remain affected by what happened to them in a previous story. Peter Rabbit is never as rash as he was after his bare escape from Farmer McGregor in the first story.Simply, I cannot praise the quality of this book enough and urge you to get a copy for yourself and your family. It is produced with quality and care and is protected by a very nice slipcase. These kinds of collections are usually called a treasury, but this one really is a treasure.

By A Customer This lovely boxed set of Potter stories, individually bound in the size prescribed by the author herself, suitable for little hands, is a treasure to have. The presentation box makes them easy to keep together as a set. The collection makes a wonderful baby gift for someone special!

We were not sure how little children raised on TV and video games would respond to the sweet, slow-moving tales written over a century ago. What we found was constant requests to "read another one, Grandpa," and "just one more." The little ones absolutely loved this book. The book is beautifully illustrated, beautifully bound, and protected in its box cover. If you treasure good books, quality books, and wish to pass along these sweet stories to another generation rather than see them watching death and mayhem on the boob tube, we would highly recommend this book for your collection.

There are four fast-paced entries in this collection: "Planetfall," "Trapped!," "Death with a Hundred Legs," and "Apocalypse Neva." Full-color panels bring the action-packed narrative to life. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic storytelling that engages both adult and child readers By Carl D. Smith Planet Gigantic is exactly the sort of comic book I want to spend my money on and tell my friends about. To read it is to be a fan, and to be an evangelist for its energetic and fanciful world. It is an all-ages book, which doesn't mean it is watered down for young readers. Instead, it is a tale that is fulfilling for readers of any expereince. On the surface it is pure adventure storytelling, yet behind that is a world with its own mythology and heart. Most importantly, Planet Gigantic injects hope back into science fiction; tossing aside the bleak, opressed future that occupies the majority of today's future fantasy. Not only will the story capture the imagination, but so will the art. The design of the world the heroes land on is only out dazzled by the design of the creatures who inhabit that world. In many ways Planet Gigantic is the perfect science fiction comic, as it is inhabited by the ghosts of sci-fi's past pulpy greats while injecting much newness into the genre. Shades of Baum and Burroughs rise to the surface but never take the wheel from this gifted writer.Support this sort of comic or they will fade into the background of gritty, posturing stunts that pass for sequential art these days. More importantly, support this comic, and hopefully Eric and team will reward us with more. Amazing stuff that will demand rereading and sharing.

They've traded punches in knockdown brawls, crashed biplanes through barns, and raced to the rescue in fast cars. They add suspense and drama to the story, portraying the swimmer stalked by the menacing shark, the heroine dangling twenty feet below a soaring hot air balloon, or the woman leaping nine feet over a wall to escape a dog attack. Only an expert can make such feats of daring look easy, and stuntwomen with the skills to perform―and survive―great moments of action in movies have been hitting their mark in Hollywood since the beginning of film. Here, Mollie Gregory presents the first history of stuntwomen in the film industry from the silent era to the twenty-first century. In the early years of motion pictures, women were highly involved in all aspects of film production, but they were marginalized as movies became popular, and more important, profitable. Capable stuntwomen were replaced by men in wigs, and very few worked between the 1930s and 1960s. As late as the 1990s, men wore wigs and women's clothes to double as actresses, and were even "painted down" for some performances, while men and women of color were regularly denied stunt work. For decades, stuntwomen have faced institutional discrimination, unequal pay, and sexual harassment even as they jumped from speeding trains and raced horse-drawn carriages away from burning buildings. Featuring sixty-five interviews, Stuntwomen showcases the absorbing stories and uncommon courage of women who make their living planning and performing action-packed sequences that keep viewers' hearts racing.

Review "This is a joyous, intense book: Gregory is bracingly up front about the outright sexism that has dogged professional stuntwomen almost from the beginningBut Gregory, who interviewed dozens of stuntwomen of all ages, focuses on much more than injustices and legal battles. What comes through most strongly is the joy these women take from their work."―New York Times

"While Stuntwomen: The Untold Hollywood Story fits comfortably on the shelf of any film history buff, it also provides essential relevance to those interested in feminism, American social/culture studies, and even contemporary law. Mollie Gregory has done a splendid job"―Mel Neuhaus, film writer, Examiner.com

"Stuntwomen, a history of American stuntwomen from silent films up through the movies of the present, is an exhaustively researched, comprehensive volume. Gregory's book fills a void in film history about this interesting, often overlooked, and vital cog in the film industry."―Sheila Benson, former chief film critic for the Los Angeles Times and writer for the National Society of Film Critics

"Mollie Gregory clearly knows her subject inside out, and writes about it vividly and excitingly."―Kevin Brownlow, Film-maker and film historian

"[T]his book aims to uncover just how bad the institutionalised sexism of Hollywood studios was for stuntwomen who were often overlooked in favour of men in wigs."―Wow 247

"[. . .] Smart, thorough, and well researched [. . .] covers the film industry's most daring ladies and their feats from silent era [to present day]."―Los Angeles Magazine

"[. . .] This chronicle is long overdue and Gregory seems to have found the right people to help tell the tale."―Leonard Maltin's Movie Crazy - Holiday Book Roundup

"[. . .] This is a joyous, intense book: Gregory is bracingly up front about the outright sexism that has dogged professional stuntwomen almost from the beginning [. . .]"―New York Times

"[. . .] [D]ocumentary filmmaker and author Mollie Gregory writes an in-depth account of the stuntwomen who have performed on the big screen and television [. . .] to give readers a close view of the exciting and dangerous world these women love to face on a daily basis."―Shelf Awareness

"In her engaging and enlightening book, Gregory digs into this little known corner of Hollywood history and gives voice to the women who have risked their lives for a few (perilous) moments on the big screen.

[...] a fascinating look at a risky profession"―Becky Krystal, Washington Post

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not the book I was expecting By CJS This book goes through the history of stuntwomen in Hollywood from the silent days to current films and t.v. shows. The book describes the challenges women face including men putting on wigs to do stunts for women because they think the women can't do them, the sexual harassment, lower pay, and not being able to move up to positions such as stunt coordinator. This was all well done and covered all of this information very well. However, I had thought the book would provide biographical information on the different stuntwomen throughout history and include their credits. This book did not do that. You got a few sentences of biographical data and a few credits but not the biographical information I was looking for.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A thrilling and inspiring story By Sunscreen101 Brings the thrilling, unknown story of these amazing women to life in a totally entertaining way. The history, from the silent movie era to today's CGI is entertainingly told by the women themselves. Stories about jumping from a galloping horse onto a moving train, dangling from a helicopter, being eaten by the shark in Jaws, dangling from a helicopter are interspersed with the story of the women's fight for jobs, recognition and safety on the set. A terrific gift for movie lovers, this is the kick-a** genesis of today's female action stars.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Early Stuntwomen's Story By Larry Telles Mollie Gregory captured the true events of action women in early film. Catching the bad guys each week in high heels and long skirts. Many of these women were making $8 a week while doing their own stunts. This book is just another example how women played a role in early film and received very little credit. Thanks Mollie for great insight!

This new edition of Snakes in Question has been completely updated to take into account the most recent research available, offering useful scientific information about snakes while dispelling many widely-circulated myths and common fears. Accompanied by 100 stunning color photographs and written in the popular question-and-answer format of Smithsonian's “In Question” series, the book tells how snakes breathe, hear, smell, and much more. It covers not only the life cycle of snakes but also explores such phenomena as the rattlesnake's rattle, the viper's hiss, and the snake charmer's secrets. It addresses common folktales about snakes (do snakes milk cows?) and describes giant snakes, both real and imaginary. The authors also give expert advice on such subjects as distinguishing venomous species from harmless look-alikes and keeping snakes as pets.

Snakes in Question, Second Edition: The Smithsonian Answer Book (Smithsonian's In Question Series), by George R. Zug, Carl H. Ernst

From Booklist This is a wonderful book. Carl Ernst and George Zug are eminent herpetologists who have produced a well-written book on an extremely popular subject. Divided into five large chapters and five appendixes, the book is set up in a question-and-answer format. Depending on the question (What is a snake? Do snakes get sick? How do fangs work?), the answers range from one or two paragraphs to multiple pages and are illustrated with photographs or line drawings. Two of the sections will be eagerly used by librarians answering questions--that on giant snakes (boas and pythons) and that on poisonous snakes (vipers and cobras). The appendixes offer further information on the classification and sizes of snakes and provide a useful directory of herpetological organizations. A glossary defines some of the more technical terminology. Finally, two bibliographies provide a comprehensive overview of the scientific literature on snakes. This exceptional book should be in every library. Nancy Bent

Outstanding with question answer format By richard I have always been fascinated by snakes, all my life I have learned all I could about snakes and I own several snake books, but this one tops them all! Just about anything you want to know about a snake will be answered in this great book. I really enjoy reading it. I am planning to become a snake expert soon and this book has really taught me a lot. It is a must have for anyone studying biology, zoology, or planning to become a herpatologist! The first section gives all the facts, it tells about how snakes evolved from lizards, how they hear see & smell, and how the snake body works. The second section, tells about the myths and tells the real truth. The third section tells about giant and the most dangerous snakes. The fourth is about snake bites, and the last section tells about snakes and humans. This book is incredible, and a must have for beginning snake enthusiast!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great for those starting out, but nothing new to the pro's By A Customer This book tells about acquiring a snake, caring for a snake, and some simple instructions for breeding snakes. The snakes in this book are mostly ratsnakes, garters&ribbons, and pythons. Perfect for those starting out, but no detail for any particular species. Still, it is a great book, especially for those who are inexperienced with the common diseases, mites, etc...

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. too general, but good for absolute newbies By A Customer For someone who knows next to nothing about how to care for snakes, this is an OK book, as it covers most common beginner species. However, if you have an experince, you've heard it all before, and shouldn't spend your money (put it towards a snake instead).

Not only was the story entertaining, but the projects were awesome - we have already built the marshmallow shooters and are planning on building more! The science throughout the book is not only fascinating, but also fun - I have to admit it was stuff that I did not even know. What an amazing concept! Thank you Howtoons, my family has just become a huge fan!

Lots of action and not much else By Chas Pardee ***Mild spoilers ahead***I've been anxiously waiting for this collection to be released since I finished Uncanny Avengers. I wanted to see the end on the whole Red Skull has Prof X's brain craziness (which felt a little unbelievable even for a comic). Being that it was written be Rick Remender, I had high hopes that it would be tied up in some really cool, meaningful way. Instead it was 9 comics with action and fights and no real plot or story development. It felt like all the events could have taken place in 3 comics instead. It's definitely worth reading to see the end of the story arc. But even then you'll probably be a bit disappointed because they leave the ending pretty open without a lot of closure. I guess it's an interesting look at characters with their alignments swapped, but even that felt a bit fickle. I can understand that villains tend to be out for themselves and heroes are looking out for others, and those motivations got swapped. But it feels like when it's convenient they just ignored character's more complex motivations. Magneto and Loki stand out as the most egregiously misused (but it could be because I really like both of those characters and all the depth that they've had, especially recently for Loki). All in all it's worth reading but I haven't decided yet if it's worth buying. I borrowed it from the library to read and I'm guessing that I'll eventually pick it up to go along with the Uncanny Avengers omnibus. When I do, I'll definitely feel a little dirty know that something so mediocre is sitting on my shelf next to so many other great collections.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Interesting Premise, but rushed. By Matthew G. Porter This was a let-down and felt rushed. A few issues:1.) The teamwork banter felt really forced and didn't fit with the characters. The opening fight felt like Remender was trying to channel his inner Whedon, but the jokes were hammy. The same thing when the X-men show up at Genosha. How can the team finish each others jokes so well mid-fight? Especially Colossus, who I thought was still in angst mode from AvX. Also, Enchantress drops some lines that are groaners "This is what gets you uninvited from fondue parties." In short, all the characters seemed to have the same voice. Absorbing Man makes a reference to Ridley Scott. Whaaa?2.) "Raincheck on the..." (insert trope here). Iron Man says this a lot in the course of only a few issues. Maybe that's Tony's new catch phrase? Except another character says it, so again, it seems like a first draft.***SPOILERS FROM HERE ON***3.) Where do the super villains come from? I get that this is an event and there are other crossover issues that answer this question, but even including a page or few panels explaining how Magneto convinced everyone to show up would be appreciated.4.) Re-used Deadpool gag. In Uncanny X-Force Vol. 1, Deadpool pulls a damaged Archangel away from a fight to heal him. He does the same thing again, but with Iron Man this time. Is this a thing from the Deadpool comics? Does he do this all the time? Or is this just a scene that Remender likes writing?5.) There's a part where Iron Man has been knocked out and when he awakens, they say he's been unconscious "all night". But they are only about 100 yards from where the fight was. Has Red Onslaught just been standing there like a goober for 8+ hours? He doesn't even need psychic powers to find them, he would discover them just by walking in a circle. This felt lazy.6.) The climax is very reminiscent of the climax of House of M. Even with the same principals: Magneto, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver.7.) Why did Invisible Woman just show up and disappear? I would have liked to see more of here. No pun intended.8.) Gettting all the heroes together to capture them is reminiscent of issue 1 of "Infinity War."All in all, I liked the flipped dynamic of the heroes and villains, and it was something I was looking forward to and in that respect it delivers. But I can't recommend buying this. The art in #5 is amazing. Just read the Wikipedia synopsis.

Review Praise for Jeff Lemire:"Lemire made a name for himself with the wistful, melancholy graphic novel Essex County (2007) and edged closer to mainstream success with the thrilling comic book SWEET TOOTH. He is currently proving to be a superstar of DC's New 52, most notably with the superhero-horror mash-up ANIMAL MAN."--BOOKLIST"Lemire has put ANIMAL MAN on tips of comic readers' tongues and in their hands with his edgy, dark tale"--COMIC BOOK RESOURCES"Forget Batman and Superman, Lemire and [artist Albert] Ponticelli make me want to be Animal Man."--IGN"Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino hit the bullseye perfectly with Green Arrow. Sharply written and featuring beautiful artwork, this is another hidden gem in the New 52 crown."--CRAVE ONLINE

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Different Kind of Justice League; Think JLI By Scott Knight I have to admit, I was intrigued by the premise of Justice League United: Justice League Canada. Jeff Lemire seems to write rather unique superhero comics, and Justice League Canada sounded like it fit the bill. So I read it as an experiment: What would this team of very different heroes look like?Animal Man and Stargirl were approached by anthropologist Adam Strange when his girlfriend, Alanna, disappeared in a beam of light. Upon investigating the incident, they were joined by Martian Manhunter and Green Arrow. As they encounter aliens, they find them transported to the planet Rann, where they discover that the shape-shifting alien Byth, along with the bounty hunter Lobo, have an evil plan in motion. As Supergirl and Hawkman join them, the group engages in a fight to save the universe from the mega-powerful child Ultra. Meanwhile, Midayo and Alanna (who was transported back to Earth), come face to face with the Witago, a beast from Cree legend.Yes, it sounds crazy. Yes, it is a little bit crazy. The tone Lemire set for this book is very similar (at least in my recollection) to that of the Justice League International stories of Keith Giffin. This book seems like it is going to be a little more offbeat and unusual than the typical Justice League-type stories, and that's a good thing. Sometimes its good to be different than the pack. My favorite part of the book is the interaction between Animal Man and Green Arrow, who seem to be filling the Blue Beetle and Booster Gold roles from the JLI. They are constantly cracking on each other, and bring a light-hearted element to the story that offsets the seriousness of Martian Manhunter, Supergirl, and Hawkman.I don't know what the future holds for Justice League United. I can see this book finding its niche and developing its own loyal following. And while I thought it was a good story, I'm not sure it's the right match for me. That being said, I would recommend Justice League United to fans looking for a different kind of team book and/or fans of Jeff Lemire.I received a preview copy of this book from DC Comics and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Exploring the dilemma of alien toilets By Gabe This was a downright bizarre issue, even by the standards of Invincible. I really enjoyed the rendering of the alien planet that Mark and family have arrived at, in search of their new home. It's a bright, vibrant, detailed world, and it reminded me of the world of Ratchet and Clank, with all the flying cars, skyscrapers, and variety of citizens. It was also great to see a couple of old favorites, Allen the Alien and little brother Oliver. The weirdness begins with Oliver's odd (to put it mildly) girlfriend, the disturbing dinner party, and Mark's subsequent trip to the can. No typos there. Unfortunately, it really feels like nothing actually happens in this issue (there's even a recap with recycled artwork from previous issues taking up the first several pages). Nonetheless, it's Invincible, so it's still enjoyable, even if not much happens. It's somewhat refreshing to see an issue in which not a single punch is thrown (excluding the recap)!

Most books on this subject are vague and lack relatable experience. I would've loved if she went into more details on online dating, profile name examples and profile writing tips/examples. Also if she went into more detail on where to meet these types of men and how to approach them or even tips to find out if he is worth the approach. Some of her tips you will kind of have to tailor and tweak based on your own "allure" and reading/understanding your guy. The same goes for her makeup and fashion tips. Definitely not an end all be all especially for the more "seasoned" and experienced SB's.

Things you could use on a regular guy if you aren't trying to get a sugar daddy. Very easy read, the author understands the in and out of the realationship and gives amazing advice, it's written as if she was speaking to you. If you haven't purchased this book your missing out.

I've gotten money from me whom I've never even kissed. A lot of girls go into this vagina first & they don't have to or want to. She may need to read Hotactics. Everything else seemed to be good advice.

Beyond its housing estates and identikit high streets there is another Britain. This is the Britain of mist-drenched forests and unpredictable sea-frets: of wraith-like fog banks, druidic mistletoe and peculiar creatures that lurk, half-unseen, in the undergrowth, tantalising and teasing just at the periphery of human vision. How have the remarkably persistent folkloric traditions of the British Isles formed and been formed by the psyches of those who inhabit them? In this sparkling new history, Carolyne Larrington explores the diverse ways in which a myriad of fantastical beings has moulded the nation’s cultural history. Fairies, elves and goblins here tread purposefully, sometimes malignly, over an eerie landscape that also conceals brownies, selkies, trows, knockers, boggarts, land-wights, Jack o’Lanterns, Barguests, the sinister Nuckleavee and Black Shuck: terrifying hell-hound of the Norfolk coast with eyes of burning coal. Ranging from Shetland to Jersey and from Ireland to East Anglia, while evoking the Wild Hunt, the ghostly bells of Lyonesse and the dread fenlands haunted by Grendel, this is a book that will captivate all those who long for the wild places: the mountains and chasms where giants lie in wait.

The Land of the Green Man: A Journey Through the Supernatural Landscapes of the British Isles, by Carolyne Larrington

Review

…a survey crammed with every myth, legend, elf, giant, and fairy tale related to the British landscape. These old stories are interwoven with references to contemporary authors who have fed British folklore into their fiction: Susan Cooper, Neil Gaiman, Alan Garner, J. K. Rowling. That the Green Man is there in the title is typical of the symbolic importance he has assumed in discussions of all things pertaining to British folklore… Larrington takes the twenty-first-century scholar’s perspective on the Green Man.

(Josephine Livingstone, The New Yorker, March 7, 2016 2016-03-07)

About the Author Carolyn Larrington teaches Medieval English Literature at St. John’s College, Oxford. Her previous books include The Women’s Companion to Mythology, The Poetic Edda and Magical Tales: Myth, Legend and Enchantment in Children’s books.

A Different Travel Guide for the British Isles By Wallace Rinkelhaus There is the land we know, the familiar terrain on which we live, engaging in a myriad of activities. We find our way around this land, home, by maps, by directions given by others, by personal knowledge, acquired over time and through practice and repetition. And there is the land we remember. When I drive home to North Carolina, where I was born and raised, where I came of age, educated, and began my adult life (1950s-90s), memory tells me I am coming home, even if the landscape has changed. I physically feel different. I remember the stories of what happened where and to whom and why. This is personal and family memory, a memory preserved and transmuted through story. In Larrington's exploration of the "supernatural landscapes of the British Isles," she examines a terrain of a memory of which the personal and the familial are a part, cultural memory. I am not speakng here of historical memory so much--what happened here on this spot, in this place, at a certain time in the past, and the weight and value of such memories, their significance. That is one way of knowing. As Larrington says, there is a "second way of knowing," of remembering, of knowing the land, through the stories and legends of folk tradition, here, those of "the British landscape." Larrington takes the reader on a journey, as the subtitle says, through the "supernatural landscapes" of the British Isles, from the islands in the far north, to Ireland, to the Isle of Man, and England, Scotland, and Wales. Here, the black dog was seen. Here, merfolk and over there, giants. Fairies, werewolves, monsters, changelings, selkies...These are local tales, part of greater mythologies and legends, true, but as Tolkien and Lewis realized, "the great heroic legend cycles had their counterparts in the local and individual. For Tolkien and Lewis, and those writers of fantasy who came after them, understood that British folk legends and the supernatural creatures who inhabit them have important things to say about human existence. Thinking about life and death, about children and animals, about riches and poverty, about love and desire, past and future: all this is work that can be accomplished through hearing, reading, and considering our traditional tales" (8-9). "Giants, selkies, hobs, mermaids, wild men, knockers, werewolves and, above all, fairies remain good to think with and good to feel with--they tap into our concerns, anxieties, questions about being human and about how we live now, in this land" (10).This book is a journey. Others have taken it, Tolkien, Lewis, and more recently, writers such as Rowling, Garner, Pullman, and Alexander. Does it matter that I am an American and not British? Yes, and no--this is not my native terrain, but it is one from many of my ancestors come, and when I first visited Britain, I felt as if I were coming home. Some visits later, I still feel that way.No, not all British fantasy writers are mentioned, but this is not meant to be comprehensive.Take this journey. As the Table of Contents suggests, this is a journey over time, of lust and love, death and loss, gain and lack, the beast and the human, and continuity--the tales are still there, part of the fabric, part of the land. And change, as we retell them, as we change where and how we live.I wish I could explore the British Isles with this as my travel guide.

By Janis Hill I would like to thank I.B.Tauris for providing me with a free ARC of this book in exchange for an open and honest review.Definitely more a text book than something you casually read as something to do. And I agree with the other reviews – why no mention of Pratchett?Okay, that’s all going to sound far more negative than I mean it to be. This was a fascinating and educational book and I did get some fantastic information from it that was new to me. But I will stand by my comments that this is more the sort of book you read for research and study than just to while away a few hours.I like text books, I love to research and so, for me, whiling away the hours with this was sort of okay… but I really did find it slow going at times and it seemed to get distracted at what the point it was trying to make actually was. Heck, I get like that… pretty sure at least half my reviews appear like that. ;-) But, yeah, not a book to casually read.I also found the layout format rather dull and I feel this added to the ‘text book’ feel. Then again, if ‘The Land of the Green Man’ is being sold as a text book – nailed it. For me, too blocky, not enough gaps/ paragraphs and sometimes very easy to go cross eyed over and start thinking about other things and losing concentration on what I was trying to read. From the blurb on Netgalley I was expecting a slightly lighter style of read and not the heavy text book I got.Would I recommend this book to others? I might mention it in passing as a good reference book if people were trying to research the myths and legends associated with areas of the UK. But I wouldn’t jump up and down and tell everyone it was the ‘must read’ book of the season.Would I buy this book for myself? Yes I would. See my comments on loving to research and how I gleaned some new information from ‘The Land of the Green Man’. Don’t get me wrong, this is an excellent reference book to add to the collection of anyone wanting to cover the myths and legends of the UK. I really could see myself referring back to this book often due to my own writing and wanting to be inspired by those story tellers who came before me.In summary: A little slow going, not the light and easy read I took it to be from the blurb, but still a worthy book to add to any true lover of myths and legends library.

As the name indicates, we learn (sort of) the origins of the mysterious Dakota. His story is a bit different from the others and actually may leave readers with even more questions than answers, but this installment definitely shows that we're gearing up for a very interesting story. My only question is how long do we have to wait for it?

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Darkest one so far By Miri This is the fourth installment.Until now, my favorite had always been Jack. Now? I'm not too sure anymore. I loved Dakota's story. It's a nightmare coming to life. The whole thing is darker than the other three combined. It's sinister enough for fans of horror.Dakota opens up the door to more questions and invites the readers to continue with the next. I'm curious to know where it will lead us. While we learn more about the characters, what their final goal will be is still a bit of a mystery.

I don't usually read this genre but Dakota and had me gripped. The well-drawn character of the creepy Dr Grey sent a chill down my spine. This is a definite must-read. If there are any TV producers out there, they should sit up and take notice. This series is made for TV.My only slight gripe is that it is a bit short, I was left hungry for more!

The story and it's illustrations take you to the mind of childhood days of laying on the grass outside on a summer day and looking up to the clouds in the sky. The book reminds you of blissful moments of childlike happiness and imagination that anything is possible without a lot of words, but words that bring you into the beautiful illustrations easily. A lovely book for those quiet moments of reflection with a cup of tea.
