The minecraft family of books are great mostly do to their consistency. The character development is always on point and the plot and fantasy aspects are interesting.I can really see how these books would be great for children. This is why I definitely recommend anyone with children who are into the minecraft scene pick a copy and have their child sit down and read the book and write a review of it. I try to grab all the minecraft series of books when then are free because I do consider myself a hobbyist minecraft player and i'm looking to get more serious.

I found the story interesting for children of all ages. I personally read it and found the plot adventurous and different from the other books of minecraft series. Every chapter connects with the other and creates a flow in the reading. My kids are enjoying reading the adventures of a little girl. Her bravery and courage are the two main things which makes the book enjoyable.

Dangers and beauty and wonderful treasures await Bert. What will he find? What will he do? What will he create? Day One, the Shelter: Bert is a noob in a world of strange new things. Everyone knows the first thing to do is build a shelter. That might be hard to do, if the Creepers get him first. Day Two, Potatoes: There's things to see, there's things to do. But what happens when Bert gets hungry? Will the villagers help? Day Two, Finding the Ravine: Always close the door to your house! There's a world out there to explore, but you need a home to come back to. Problem is, the monsters like Bert's home too! Day Two, Skeleton Attack!: Down underground is where the best riches hide. Bert wants to mine out the good stuff. Things get scary down in the dark... Day Twenty, Entering the Nether: Days after he started exploring the world, Bert has everything he could want. A better home, better tools, better weapons. There's still more to explore. What is this Nether that he's heard so much about? Day Twenty, Finding the Nether Fortress: Monsters! Monsters everywhere. Who knew the Nether would be this dangerous? Should he explore the giant fortress, or play it safe? Day Twenty, Escaping the Nether: Diamonds and emeralds and gold are tempting. They might be worth sneaking past a few monsters. Unless Bert dies...

Hermann Langbein was allowed to know and see extraordinary things forbidden to other Auschwitz inmates. Interned at Auschwitz in 1942 and classified as a non-Jewish political prisoner, he was assigned as clerk to the chief SS physician of the extermination camp complex, which gave him access to documents, conversations, and actions that would have remained unknown to history were it not for his witness and his subsequent research. Also a member of the Auschwitz resistance, Langbein sometimes found himself in a position to influence events, though at his peril.People in Auschwitz is very different from other works on the most infamous of Nazi annihilation centers. Langbein's account is a scrupulously scholarly achievement intertwining his own experiences with quotations from other inmates, SS guards and administrators, civilian industry and military personnel, and official documents. Whether his recounting deals with captors or inmates, Langbein analyzes the events and their context objectively, in an unemotional style, rendering a narrative that is unique in the history of the Holocaust. This monumental book helps us comprehend what has so tenaciously challenged understanding.

People in Auschwitz (Published in Association with the United States Holocaust Me), by Hermann Langbein

Review Hermann Langbein, then a communist activist, was a leading member of the underground movement in Auschwitz concentration camp, and an acute observer of the situation there. His memoir is one of the foundation stones of research on Auschwitz, an indispensable contribution to the complex and fearsome reality of the camp.(Yehuda Bauer, director of the International School for Holocaust Studies at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem)The preparation of this classic for the English-speaking world makes one of the most important and powerful survivor accounts of Auschwitz accessible to the West, and introduces general readers to the mind and experience of a crucially placed and astonishingly observant witness to the Holocaust. In the first-person literature created by survivors and victims in the ghettos and concentration camps, "People in Auschwitz" ranks as an historical document with works like "The Warsaw Diary of Adam Czerniakow", and the memoirs of Buchenwald survivor Eugen Kogon, "The Theory and Practice of Hell". Langbein's epic, at long last, also serves as a moral antidote and historical counterweight to the memoirs of the notorious Commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Hoess, first published nearly fifty years ago.(Charles W. Sydnor Jr., author of "Soldiers of Destruction: The SS Death's Head Division, 1933-1945")

Review Monumental. . . . Free of self-pity, sentimentality and cliche. . . . Always painstaking about the truth, outlining the reality of Auschwitz . . . So precisely to investigate . . . the problem of the "Auschwitz Universe" . . . and to think it through required extraordinary strength of character, [and] relentless industry.--Domino (Zurich)This report of human civilization's fall into Hell must be read by anyone who wants to master Germany's past.--Berliner MorgenpostRemarkable, sober.--Suddeutsche ZeitungLangbein's book is a must not only for reparations council authorities and their reports. It is of equal significance for school and university students, teachers, historians, librarians, and for all politically conscious people. Whoever tries today to suppress [what happened at Auschwitz], and states the opinion that similar things happen today, is a fool or a sympathizer with criminals of the lowest order. Possibly Langbein's book also can serve as instructive reading for those evil individuals who always approach the subject in bad faith.--Die Mahnung (Berlin)Unquestionably, Langbein is one of the best experts on this material.--Wiener TageblattDocumentation out of the depths of Hell.--AufbauA comprehensive sociological-psychological study. . . . Voluminous correspondence with Auschwitz survivors and innumerable conversations complete the picture and correct subjective judgments.--Flensburger TageblattThe preparation of this classic for the English-speaking world makes one of the most important and powerful survivor accounts of Auschwitz accessible to the West, and introduces general readers to the mind and experience of a crucially placed and astonishingly observant witness to the Holocaust. In the first-person literature created by survivors and victims in the ghettos and concentration camps, People in Auschwitz ranks as an historical document with works like The Warsaw Diary of Adam Czerniakow, and the memoirs of Buchenwald survivor Eugen Kogon, The Theory and Practice of Hell. His memoir is one of the foundation stones of research on Auschwitz, an indispensable contribution to the complex and fearsome reality of the camp.--Yehuda Bauer, director of the International School for Holocaust Studies at Yad Vashem in JerusalemFirst published in German more than 30 years ago, this modestly titled memoir provides a unique account of the Third Reich's most notorious death camp. . . . in weaving together these uncomfortable truths with the most comprehensive analysis of any survivor memoir, Langbein's People in Auschwitz represents an indispensable addition to English-language literature on the Holocaust.--German Studies ReviewEducators and teachers should seize this work as a report that one will scarcely forget, nor should one be permitted to [forget].--Israel ForumFor generations of historians this work . . . will be a mine of discovery.--Die Zukunft (Vienna)An objective diagram of the Satanic realm.--Die WeltBoth sides of the barbed wire of Auschwitz. . . . Langbein resists generalization and black-and-white characterization.--HTV MagazinComing generations who want factual enlightenment about what happened . . . will find it in Langbein's book.--Salzburger NachrichtenThis is a scrupulously scholarly achievement and will become a classic of Holocaust history.--Jewish Book World

About the Author Hermann Langbein (1912-1995) was born in Vienna. In 1938 he was a member of the International Brigade in the Spanish Civil War, then he was interned in various French camps. Following the German conquest, he was transferred to Dachau, then to Auschwitz, where he remained for two years. There he was a leading participant in the international resistance organization in the camp. After liberation he became general secretary of the International Auschwitz Committee and later secretary of the Comite International des Camps. Among the many important works he wrote or edited are Against All Hope: Resistance in the Nazi Concentration Camps, 1938-1945 and Nazi Mass Murder: A Documentary History of the Use of Poison Gas.

16 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating exploration of life in Auschwitz By A reader This is a scholarly but very readable account of what the Auschwitz experience was like. The author performed thorough research and interviews with numerous former prisoners and staff to get a close-up look at the different sections of the camp, including Canada and the inmate infirmary, different aspects of camp life, such as resistance and sexuality, and the experiences and interactions of different classes of prisoners and the SS. Despite the book's serious and scholarly tone, it has a humane and personal feel to it, probably because the author himself was an inmate and so many interviews were quoted from in the book. It also describes the construction, evolution and liberation of the camp. This book is a must read for anyone studying Auschwitz.

P.O.W from Auschwitz tells story, translated into English By irish_native_american Translated into English from German by a P.O.W who lived in Auschwitz as an assistant to a camp doctor. He explains the different cultures within the camp.He also gives the point of view of fellow P.O.W's ! Must read for a history buff, very vivid & at times disturbing.

The derivation of structural information from spectroscopic data is now an integral part of organic chemistry courses at all Universities.  Over recent years, a number of powerful two-dimensional NMR techniques (e.g. HSQC, HMBC, TOCSY, COSY and NOESY) have been developed and these have vastly expanded the amount of structural information that can be obtained by NMR spectroscopy.  Improvements in NMR instrumentation now mean that 2D NMR spectra are routinely (and sometimes automatically) acquired during the identification and characterisation of organic compounds.

Organic Structures from 2D NMR Spectra is a carefully chosen set of more than 60 structural problems employing 2D-NMR spectroscopy.  The problems are graded to develop and consolidate a student’s understanding of 2D NMR spectroscopy.  There are many easy problems at the beginning of the collection, to build confidence and demonstrate the basic principles from which structural information can be extracted using 2D NMR. The accompanying text is very descriptive and focussed on explaining the underlying theory at the most appropriate level to sufficiently tackle the problems.

Organic Structures from 2D NMR Spectra

  • Is a graded series of about 60 problems in 2D NMR spectroscopy that assumes a basic knowledge of organic chemistry and a basic knowledge of one-dimensional NMR spectroscopy
  • Incorporates the basic theory behind 2D NMR and those common 2D NMR experiments that have proved most useful in solving structural problems in organic chemistry
  • Focuses on the most common 2D NMR techniques – including COSY, NOESY, HMBC, TOCSY, CH-Correlation and multiplicity-edited C-H Correlation.
  • Incorporates several examples containing the heteronuclei 31P, 15N and 19F

Organic Structures from 2D NMR Spectra is a logical follow-on from the highly successful “Organic Structures from Spectra” which is now in its fifth edition.  The book will be invaluable for students of Chemistry, Pharmacy, Biochemistry and those taking courses in Organic Chemistry. Also available: Instructors Guide and Solutions Manual to Organic Structures from 2D NMR Spectra

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A must for 2D NMR By George W Francis An excellent book for those with an interest in learning and using 2D NMR. No advanced mathematics are needed and the reader is first introduced to the methods to be used, provided with a couple of worked examples, before being provided with a set of graduated problems leading to an understanding of how the various NMR Experiments can be combined to best effect.

JL Volume 5 or "Forever Evil": Origins of the Crime Syndicate and Cyborg and the Metal Men By Anarchy in the US FOREVER EVIL is the follow-up event from Trinity War and even as far back as JUSTICE LEAGUE #1 since the beginning of the New 52, as well as JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA. Lots of little tiny hints have been put into play since the beginning of the New 52 under Geoff Johns that have finally been built up to this very event where the DC universe's villains come out to play without most the super-heroes. JUSTICE VOL.5: FOREVIL HEROES builds upon the main event by being entirely a companion piece as opposed to being a stand alone series. This could be a hindrance for those who want just a Justice League-only adventure, but as a companion piece, it's quite enjoyable.JUSTICE LEAGUE VOL.5: FOREVER EVIL collects issues #24-29. Since Issues 24-26 deal primarily with the origins/insight on the Crime Syndicate, while issues 27-29 explains Vic Stone, AKA Cyborg, from his perspective during the Forever Evil (Forever Evil: the New 52!) event that allows introduces the Metal Men in the New 52 (that's not a spoiler because it's in the product description and back cover).I usually give a more summarized description of the book, but that's pretty much volume 5 in a nutshell, but what's here is still a worthy look at. Johns does seem to do his best work on villains and since FOREVER EVIL is a villain's centered event, it makes sense to continue with the theme in JUSTICE LEAGUE. Issue 24 deals entirely of Ultraman and issue 25's Owlman back stories with issue 26 summarizing the rest of the Crime Syndicate to fill-in additional layers to these characters backgrounds, motives, and mystery of what lead to the group going into Earth-1. It's quite well done considering most of the Syndicate are evil versions of their hero/Earth-1 counterparts, yet does enough where these evil versions are quite different and yes--very evil. And the other half of the book leading Cyborg and his new robotic body (which very Teen Titan-like) and the New 52 version of the Metal Men going after the Syndicate. This is pretty enjoyable section of the book for Cyborg and Metal Men fans, as well as getting new readers into the metallic heroes. They come off just like their original selves and design, but Johns tweaks them just enough to act and look more modernized. The art is mostly handled by Ivan Reis doing issues #24 and #26-28 and his art style always impresses. And Doug Mahnke does isses #25 and #29 who also brings his high-detailed style, though both artist styles do clash a bit.I didn't feel there were any real negatives here, but it didn't wow me. The book is not a series of stand-alone tales away from FOREVER EVIL, so those readers who hate/want nothing to do with events might have to wait until Justice League Vol. 6: Injustice League (The New 52) (Jla (Justice League of America)) when things back on track, though arguably you'll still need to read FOREVER EVIL because it does change up the aspects of the Justice League for volume 6. And although it's a great companion piece to the main event, it's entirely a companion piece to the point where you need to read FOREVER EVIL to fill in the blanks and conclude the story. So JUSTICE LEAGUE VOL.5: FOREVER HEROES isn't really a Justice League book by any means, it's still an enjoyable companion and character driven piece to FOREVER EVIL. It gives great insight on the Syndicate, more stories for Cyborg, and a good introduction of the Metal Men. But it's entirely a companion book for FOREVER EVIL that you'll have to read first, since JL vol.5 is not needed to enjoy. But for it's worth, I think was a nice addition to FOREVER EVIL without feeling necessary.

Origin Stories for the Crime Syndicate and Metal Men; Entertaining By Scott Knight As a supplemental group of stories to the Forever Evil event, Geoff Johns's Justice League Vol. 5: Forever Heroes works wonderfully. The individual issues work on their own and dovetail superbly into the greater tale being told in Forever Evil. The first several issues spend a lot of time focusing on the Crime Syndicate, looking at their backgrounds on Earth-2 either individually or in groups. This serves to add depth to the characters, and provides some motivations for their actions. I particularly enjoyed the issue detailing Owlman's origin. The origin of Grid is also detailed, and I found this helpful because that character just seemed to spring to life with no thought or purpose. Finding out about his creation filled in some missing holes. The final issue dealt with Cyborg's reconstruction after Grid split from him, and served to provide an upgrade to the character as well as cap off on of the major sub-plot points of the Forever Evil event. However, my favorite story was the background of the Metal Men. Detailing the creation of the Metal Men, this issue was particularly moving, providing some emotional depth to the characters as they receive their first real action in DC's New 52. There is a lot of potential in these characters, and I look forward to reading future stories about them.Johns has proven time and again that he can write sprawling stories, and in this collection he shows his skill with the smaller, support pieces. Forever Heroes is a great book, and does it's job as a tie-in very well; in fact, it is better than most of these types of books, which often seem forced or only distantly related.I highly recommend Forever Heroes.I received a preview copy of this book from DC Comics and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Published in 1900, Wellington’s Men is best summarized by the words of the author himself: “This volume is an attempt to rescue from undeserved oblivion a cluster of soldierly autobiographies, and to give to the general reader some pictures of famous battles, not as described by the historian or analysed by the philosopher, but as seen by the eyes of men who fought in them.” Wellington’s Peninsula Campaign of the 1810s is told by four soldiers who lived through it: John Kincaid in his Adventures in the Rifle Brigade; Benjamin Harris (Rifleman Harris); James Anton in his Military Life; and Cavalie Mercer in his book Waterloo. They are written by different ranks of soldier: two junior officers, a sergeant, and a private soldier. As a commentary on the texts, Fitchett inserts his own criticism and analysis of parts of four biographies. Each of these men were eyewitnesses to the major events of Wellington’s Peninsula Campaign, and write critically about their own experiences in vivid prose that takes us directly back to the battlefields of Europe. They are the “actual human documents, with the salt of truth, of sincerity, and of reality in every syllable,” as Fitchett writes. ‘Wellington’s Men’ is a fascinating history of the Napoleonic Wars as told by the men who saw it. W.H. Fitchett (1841-1928) was a minister, educator and writer, who wrote a column for the Spectator magazine. He published works of fiction and non-fiction, including a four-volume collection How England Saved Europe in 1909. Fitchett's effort, first published in 1900, to preserve four first-person accounts from Wellington's Peninsular and Waterloo Armies of the Napoleonic Wars. Fitchett provides a short introduction and minimal connecting commentary within the four accounts. The actual narrators of their own histories are a Captain Kincaid, who served in the Rifle Brigade in the Peninsular War in Spain and Portugal; Sergeant Anton's account of his service with the 42nd Highlanders (the Black Watch) in the Peninsular War and the Waterloo Campaign; Rifleman Harris, who served with the 95th Rifles in the Peninsula War; and a Captain Mercer, who commanded an artillery battery in the Waterloo Campaign. Each account is told from the point of view of the narrator and is rich with details about life on campaign. Each provides a sense of just how grueling, and cruel, early 19th century warfare could be. There are no included maps or illustrations. These accounts may be of most interest to readers with a good general knowledge of the context of the Peninsular War and the Waterloo Campaign. "Wellington's Men" is highly recommended to that audience.

Evans The author does a masterful job taking the words of 4 men and putting those words into somewhat modern readable English. These 4 men wrote their stories of marching, living and fighting with the British forces under Wellington against Emperor Napoleon. The author analyzes and edits their works. He provides a picture of their lives before and after their time with Wellington. Their stories combine to present eyewitness accounts of some of histories most famous battles. Adding to the appeal of the stories is the fact that accounts are written by 2 officers and 2 enlisted men all writing in different styles.I recommend this book to anyone interested in history, especially military history of the famous battles fought between the British and the French in the Napoleonic wars. I did not give 5 stars because I found that some descriptive passages had to be left into the accounts and these were in the wordy writing style of 200 years ago.

By pat moloney Great eyewitness accounts of the harshness and comraderie of a a soldiers life in the British Army under Wellington. A rare type of history book. Brilliant idea to take extracts from books written by the actual soldiers themselves and edit them into one book. A window into a past world. The description of the artillery officer at Waterloo is incredible, the chaos, the slaughter and the bravery on both sides.

By Enik's Vessel I don't know how I lived without these issues during the years after I had lost them. This was a huge part of my journey into adulthood, and when I look back, I realize how lucky I was to have been among this group of superstar peers. It wasn't just about the questioning of authority, I had that drilled in early on from my hippie parents... but something bigger. If we do figure out how to get along, what then? What causes should we support? How will we know that they are worthy? What exactly is it that we want? Today I feel even farther away from having the answers to those questions... how is that possible? Maybe teenagers DO know everything. It's been at least twenty years since I've read Depressing Ode to a Dog in the Road, but I found I had remembered every verse. Thank you so much Bob for creating this in the first place, and now for letting us revisit it, I was beginning to wonder if it was all a dream... (what is real?). Thanks also to the elusive Bridgette Bardot whose mysterious poetry continues to haunt me.

  • In a world where all the fictions ever written coalesce into a rich mosaic, it’s 1975. Janni Dakkar, pirate queen of Lincoln Island and head of the fabled Nemo family, is eighty years old and beginning to display a tenuous grasp on reality. Pursuing shadows from her past — or her imagination — she embarks on what may be a final voyage down the vastness of the Amazon, a last attempt to put to rest the blood-drenched spectres of old. With allies and adversaries old and new, we accompany an aging predator on her obsessive trek into the cultural landscape of a strange new continent, from the ruined city of Yu-Atlanchi to the fabulous plateau of Maple White Land. As the dark threads in her narrative are drawn into an inescapable web, Captain Nemo leads her hearse-black Nautilus in a desperate raid on horrors believed dead for decades.
  • Through the exotic spectacle of an imagined South America, Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill steer their fifty-year-long Nemo trilogy to its remarkable conclusion, borne upon a River of Ghosts.

The Final Voyage of Janni Dakkar By David Swan I’ve read and reviewed all the Century volumes and all the Nemo (Janni) volumes and this is the first time I did my homework PRIOR to reading the story. Using clues from the product description I read The Lost World by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, The Face in the Abyss by A. Merritt and even Eight Hundred Leagues on the Amazon by Jules Verne just on the chance it might get a mention. Turns out what I should have done was watched ‘Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine’ and read an extremely obscure comic from 1902 called Hugo Hercules.I have not given any of the Century or Nemo volumes rave reviews and that’s not going to change with this latest volume. River of Ghosts is very similar in plot to The Roses of Berlin, including hunting down the previously decapitated Princess Ayesha, except this story is not as good. I would love to say that the writer of Watchmen, Swamp Thing and Miracleman had re-found his mojo and produced a new masterpiece but there is nothing here that comes close to Alan Moore at his best. Like the other two stories in the Nemo trilogy the plot appears to be incidental and the story seems to exist to cram in references to literary and movie characters. Probably the most interesting character in the book was the enormous and seemingly indestructible bodyguard of Janni, Hugo Hercules. He’s a bit of an exaggeration of the original comic character but it was neat that Alan Moore resurrected what some consider the first super powered comic character. I had never heard of the character before reading this story. If you loved Heart of Ice and The Roses of Berlin you’ll probably love River of Ghosts but for me it was simply a pale reflection of Moore’s greater works. I have no idea if Alan Moore will ever produce another masterpiece like V for Vendetta or The Killing Joke but I’ll continue to support his new material even if my reviews aren’t offering great praise. Alan Moore has produced more marvelous stories than any other comic writer ever and his craftsmanship even here is top notch but it just lacks those magical moments from earlier works. It’s an attractive hard cover book but when I go to my shelf to read some great Alan Moore stories this book will likely sit on the shelf collecting dust.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Good - to OK, but not great By Treetown I am a big fan of Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's earlier work. The Nemo stories (Heart of Ice, Roses of Berlin, River of Ghosts) are a spinoff of their highly successful League of Extraordinary Gentlemen series. It supposes that the original Captain Nemo left his mantle to his daughter Janni (who appears peripherally in LOEG III Centuries). This volume wraps up the Nemo saga with her going on one last adventure despite being quite old and frail - she remains the world's most dangerous grandmother. The plot basically ties up the loose ends from the earlier works and complete Janni's rivalry with the Immortal Ayesha. I am sad to say that the art work is OK and the story is sort of OK as well. The plot twists and reveals unfortunately having been anticipated by many other works. It is NOT a spoiler that there could be ex-Nazis (or their LOEG counterparts) hiding in South America. The only clever revelation is the re-introduction of one of the first super human heroes from popular literature. If you are completist then you'll probably want to get this. If you are hoping for something like LOEG then you might be a bit disappointed. There are clever bits and moments but nothing that is organized as a story.Frankly if you recall the LOEG Black Dossier, many of the adventures outlined in the Dossier would make a better story.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An Entertaining Tale that Charts a Simpler Course than LOEG: Century By EisNinE [It's easy to criticize Alan Moore. He's crafted so many of the 'essential' works of what was once considered a trash medium, anything less is taken as an insult, by some. How many times can he surpass himself, or even match the stories that made him an icon. Watchmen, From Hell, Lost Girls, A Small Killing, LOEG, Top Ten, Promethea -- he's created works that will be remembered, and read, fifty years from now (even if they're not printed on paper). But he's also created tales that are too experimental for most, and even some that are a bit light, intellectually, for fans. Apparently some readers will find every effort that is inferior to Watchmen unforgivable; but judged fairly, the LOEG books of the last decade are excellent, entertaining reads, with a complexity that few authors can handle. Readers don't have to recognize every cultural reference, and it's ridiculous to think Moore expected that of his audience. The tapestry that once incorporated the narrative threads of Victorian England now approaches Bayeux-like dimensions, including multiple time periods and media. For those willing to engage with the work, it can be fascinating and even instructive, sending people on a hunt across Wikipedia and Amazon. That doesn't happen much in comics; it's an isolated, self-referential art-form. Too many fans read nothing but comics, so an introduction to something outside the comic-book containment field is always positive. But if not, so what? Moore is still writing stories that stand on their own (except the Black Dossier, I suppose). And I'll take Moore's work over the repetitious superhero drek Marvel and DC churn out.]Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill continue to build their literary comics-wonderland, a meta-narrative that incorporates classic fiction both great and obscure. Following the course charted by Janni, the daughter and successor of the original League of Extraordinary Gentlemen member Captain Nemo, the aging crew of the dreaded Nautilus make their way to Antarctica. Tiring of murder and plunder, Janni retraces her fathers steps, seeking adventure and a chance to solve the mystery of what it was he found on the frozen continent, something so terrible it nearly drove one of the world's most fearsome and fearless men insane. Meanwhile, they are unaware that their latest attack on property belonging to a strange and exotic 'queen' has made them a dangerous enemy; enlisting the aid of famous science-heroes/mercenaries, they track Janni and her crew to the south pole, willing to murder anyone who comes between them and their prey. But they have stumbled into an alien world constructed from nightmares, where an elder god known as 'Tekelele' sleeps. Even space and time become sick in this mountain range, or as H.P. Lovecraft dubbed them, 'The Mountains of Madness'.

I really like the characters in this book. It's a lot better than some of the mainstream comic books out there. I hope more people buy the book because I really want to see a sequel to this.

Long banned in the United States, the Federal government told New Hampshire in 1963 it couldn't start a lottery - not without breaking a score of laws and courting infiltration by racketeers. Led by a motley group of characters - including a governor betting his political career and a celebrated FBI agent - they pushed ahead anyway. That set the first state-operated lottery on a collision course with the Feds, the media, and the church. The New Hampshire Sweepstakes wasn't a scratch ticket or a numbers draw; it was one glorious horse race. Thousands flocked to the state to buy tickets. Some were arrested...American Sweepstakes tells the forgotten tale of how this small state fought all-comers, ushering in the modern lottery age and creating the American daydream

Review “Flynn does a superb job of making all his characters come alive. In an entertaining way, Flynn recalls an important time in America, including the Kennedy era of the 1960s. You can bet on enjoying American Sweepstakes.” (Thomas Maier, author of Masters of Sex)

From the Back Cover By 1963 public lotteries--a time-honored if tarnished method of raising revenue for everything from the Roman roads to Washington's Continental Army--had been outlawed in the United States for seventy years. The only legal gambling in America was found in Nevada, where mob involvement had at first been an open secret, and then revealed as no secret at all. In New Hampshire--a conservative, rural state with no sales tax and persistent problems with funding education--state legislator Larry Pickett had filed a bill to establish a lottery in every legislative session since 1953. To the surprise of many, it won passage a decade later and was signed into law by John King, the state's first Democratic governor in forty years.American Sweepstakes describes how King assembled an unlikely group of supporters--including a celebrated FBI agent and the staunchly conservative publisher of the state's leading newspaper--to establish the first state lottery in the nation, paving the way for what is today a $78 billion enterprise. Despite the remonstrations of the Catholic Church, the threat of arrest by the federal government, the strident denunciations of nearly every newspaper editorialist in the country, and the very real fear that the lottery would be co-opted by the mob, eleven thoroughbred racehorses leapt from the gate on September 12, 1964, in the first New Hampshire Sweepstakes, ushering in the lottery age in America.

It brings together notorious characters like Whitey Bulger, Bobby Kennedy and obscure small state politicians in a compelling yarn that captures a moment in American history.

How America Caught Lotto Fever By Matthew Ries From Powerball to Mega Millions, nearly everyone in the United States has heard about stage-run lotteries, but just a little over 50 years ago that wasn’t the case as seen in “American Sweepstakes”. In Kevin Flynn’s short history of the birth of the New Hampshire Sweepstakes, the beginning of the modern age of state lotteries is chronicled and how a legal state-run lottery system was created in the process.Flynn chronicles how the New Hampshire Sweepstakes came into law before back over the relationship between the United States and gambling, both legal and otherwise. Flynn then described the federal laws that New Hampshire needed to tightrope around as well as create a corruption free contest that people would have confidence in. Although many individuals were highlighted in the book, it was Governor John King and the Sweepstakes Direction Ed Powers who dominated the narrative of the history.Throughout the book, Flynn spends time on a variety of historical subjects that impacted the starting of the Sweepstakes. The Irish Sweepstakes, the acknowledged model for New Hampshire’s law, and the Brink’s Robbery are the two big historical digressions that add to the reader’s perspective of the entire story. In fact foreign policy and federal politics also played a role as both the Kennedy Presidency, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the 1964 New Hampshire Democratic primary were all contributing factors that were non insignificant.“American Sweepstakes” does not reach 300 pages, but crunch in that short length Kevin Flynn wrote a concise but thorough history of the state-run lottery that launched the present ‘American Lottery Age’. If you enjoy reading a book about a specific historical event this is the book for you without the dash of agenda politics then this is the book for you, not only do you get the story behind the event but also how other interesting historical events played their own part in a little remember event.I received this book through LibraryThing’s Early Reviewer program in exchange for an honest review.

Title: Environmental Missouri: Issues and Sustainability - What You Need to Know Author: Don Corrigan Size: 6 x 9 Bindings: softcover Pages: 240 ISBN: 9781935806684 Cost: $19.95 Environmental Missouri is the first comprehensive guide to local and state environmental issues involving the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the land we inhabit in the Show-Me State. This collection is very serious and yet intensely readable, as it examines such problems as urban sprawl, polluted streams, radioactive waste, lead contamination, airborne mercury, ozone and smog, and noise and light pollution. The book raises questions about wildlife concerns: What's with the Asian Carp taking over our rivers? Why are the bees disappearing? When will the Ozark Hellbender revive and thrive? Environmental Missouri is not all bad news and pessimistic prose. A final chapter on sustainability looks at how Missourians are going green, whether it's with cloth diaper parties, raising backyard chickens, farming responsibly, or hosting green burials at trail's end. Each chapter includes a Q and A with a habitat expert or environmental activist to give a unique perspective on the concern at hand. Environmental Missouri argues that we should teach our children well, instead of trying to sweep problems under the rug. It's time to tackle matters head on and guide the way to a more sustainable future! Published in cooperation with Webster University Press.

Primer on the state of our environmental affairs By Jzika Hoagland As a nature teacher who runs a family adventure school in Saint Louis, this is the book I've long been searching for. It's a primer on environmental issues in the state of Missouri and It is neither boring, dry nor depressing. Each short chapter tackles one environmental issue and features a local expert or champion in his or her subject area. Subject areas range from radioactive waste, to tree planting, to river clean up. It offers a complete yet concise picture of our state of environmental affairs. Honestly, it should be required reading for every high school student.I happen to know that this book is cutting the front edge of the environmental justice movement, and the Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) has put out a call to produce a similar book in each state. Kudos to the author. If you are a first rate teacher, engaged parent or active citizen in Missouri, especially Saint Louis, I strongly encourage you to buy this book. Knowledge is power!

By JD Corrigan Environmental Missouri gives a brief overview on forty-five different environmental issues that are facing Missouri today, but are also applicable to many other places too. Each chapter provides a brief overview of a particular environmental topic and then how it relates specifically to Missouri, for example airborne Mercury. The book also includes a brief Q&A section in each chapter between the author and an expert, leader, or organizational representative that is knowledgeable on the topic. The text easily introduces scientific topics to readers and is not complex or difficult to understand. The book is not a stand alone book though on any given environmental topic, but the strength of this book is that each chapter is accompanied by a notes section and an additional readings list. Overall, the book does an excellent job introducing the reader to a wide array of environmental topics affecting Missouri today.

By Jim Rhodes This is very good as it covers a lot of ground but there is virtually no mention of climate change as an issue. And each issue gets only maybe 2 to 3 pages. Otherwise this is good.
