3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Death of Wolverine Continues to Unfold By S. H. Wells Collecting: Death of Wolverine: Logan Legacy #1-7This book as well as Death of Wolverine: The Weapon X Program are mini-series that spin directly out of the Death of Wolverine event. The Logan Legacy is a good collection that is bookended by Charles Soule's writing. Each issue in between, however, is scripted by a different writer and illustrated by a different artist. Jonathan Marks' Sabretooth-centered issue is visually arresting and is a highlight of this book. This book has a narrative structure similar to episode 18 of Star Trek the Next Generation Season 3. In the Star Trek episode, Picard is abducted and placed in a cell with three aliens who fundamentally do not like each other, and they have to figure out why they are there. In "The Logan Legacy" the narrative starts with Mystique, Sabretooth, Daken, X-23, and Lady Deathstrike in a cage at the mercy of a mysterious captor. None of these characters are known for impulse control, and they are soon at each other's throats. In order to find their common ground, the characters are forced to recount their reactions to Logan's death. Thus. each issue in the "Logan Legacy" book focuses on a different character. The common thread shows how each of the prisoners copes with news of Wolverine's death and how each deals with the loss of their father/genetic material/nemesis.The common threads weave the beginning of the next episode which can be found in Wolverines Volume 1: Dancing with the Devil.Overall, the combination of Sabretooth, Daken, Lady Deathstrike, Mystique, and X-23 in a cage together is a strong start for the novel. The different artists in the book also create an overall strong and visually interesting collection. Each story generally works well, but some of them are a bit uneven. For instance, the Sabretooth issue strikes the right notes as Sabretooth frustratedly attempts to deal with the loss of Wolverine. This issue has a keen sense of character and psychology. On the other hand, Captain Chinook seemed rather forced, and he came out of nowhere to leave such an impact on X-23.

There are a good number of mythological references of importance to curious Westerners studying the now clouded mysteries of early Arabian myth and religion. The book comes across as a Tour guide to the lost worlds, which lie dreaming amidst the dust of the ancients. Yet given this, it is not an in depth work nor is it up to date with some of the most interesting discoveries concerning he various Lost or newly discovered Cities in Arabia. It will lead you to many "historical" suggestions and perceptions that deserve more detail. It is Still a good read.

The sobering and brutal consequences of the Civil War off the battlefield are revealed in this examination of atrocities committed against civilians. Rationale for the Union’s “hard war” and the political ramifications of such a war set the foundation for Walter Cisco’s enlightening research. Styled the “Black Flag” campaign, the hard line was agreed to by Lincoln in a council with his generals in 1864, when he gave permission to wage unlimited war against civilians, including women and children.

In a series of concise and compelling chapters, Cisco chronicles the “St. Louis Massacre,” where Federal authorities proceeded to impose a reign of terror and dictatorship in Missouri. He tells of the events leading to, and the suffering caused by, the Federal decree that forced twenty thousand Missouri civilians into exile. The arrests of civilians, the suppression of civil liberties, theft, and murder to “restore the Union” in Tennessee are also examined.

Women and children, black and white, were robbed, brutalized, and left homeless in Sherman’s infamous raid through Georgia. Torture and rape were not uncommon. In South Carolina, homes, farms, churches, and whole towns disappeared in flames. Civilians received no mercy at the hands of the Union invaders. Earrings were ripped from bleeding ears, graves were robbed, and towns were pillaged. Wherever Federal troops encountered Southern Blacks, whether free or slave, they were robbed, brutalized, belittled, kidnapped, threatened, tortured, and sometimes raped or killed by their blue-clad “liberators.”

Carefully researched, largely from primary sources, the book includes notes and illustrations. This untold story will interest anyone exploring an alternative perspective on this period in American history.

WAR CRIMES AGAINST SOUTHERN CIVILIANS, by Walter Brian Cisco

Review "...blows the lid off the conspiracy of silence about the violent, mass-murdering origins of the American Leviathan state..." -- -Thomas J. DiLorenzo, www.LewRockwell.com

From the Inside Flap

"Of all the enormities committed by Americans in the nineteenth century--including slavery and the Indian wars--the worst was the invasion of the South, which destroyed some twenty billion dollars of private and public property and resulted in the deaths of some two million people, most of whom were civilians--both white and black." --David Aiken, editor of A City Laid Waste: The Capture, Sack, and Destruction of the City of Columbia

Finally, here is the first book-length survey of the Union's "hard war" against the people of the Confederacy--one that included the shelling and burning of cities, systematic destruction of entire districts, mass arrests, forced expulsions, wholesale plundering, and murder.

In a series of compelling chapters, Cisco chronicles the St. Louis massacre, where Federal authorities proceeded to impose a reign of terror and dictatorship in Missouri. He tells of the events leading to, and the suffering caused by, the Federal decree that forced twenty thousand Missouri civilians into exile. The arrests of civilians, the suppression of civil liberties, theft, and murder to "restore the union" in Tennessee are also examined.

Women and children were robbed, brutalized, and left homeless in Sherman's infamous raid through Georgia. In South Carolina, homes, farms, churches, and whole towns disappeared in flames. Civilians received no mercy at the hands of the Union invaders.

Thoroughly researched from sources including letters, diaries, and newspaper accounts of the time, Walter Brian Cisco's exhaustive book notably pays careful attention to the suffering of African-American victims of Federal brutality, revealing that wherever Federal troops encountered Southern blacks, whether free or slave, they were robbed, brutalized, belittled, kidnapped, threatened, tortured, and sometimes raped or killed by their blue-clad "liberators."

Apologists for Lincoln's hard war continue to downplay the suffering endured and the damage done, blame the victims, or call some of the above incidents "accidents" or "mistakes." Many also cling to the Lincolnian myth that only by the most horrendous of wars could the slaves be freed, ignoring the fact that the rest of the Western world managed to bring an end to the institution without bloodshed. This book serves to set the record straight and to show that the war on Southern civilians was not justified, despite the convictions by many that such a war was necessary to save the union.

Walter Brian Cisco's first book, States Rights Gist: A South Carolina General of the Civil War, a biography of the little-known general, was a 1992 selection of the History Book Club. He is also the author of Taking a Stand: Portraits from the Southern Secession Movement, Henry Timrod: A Biography, and Wade Hampton: Confederate Warrior, Conservative Statesman, considered the definitive biography of Hampton and the 2006 winner of the Douglas Southall Freeman History Award. He lives in Orangeburg, South Carolina.

From the Back Cover

"Despite the spinning of romantic historians, hard evidence indicates that the invasion of the South is the American enormity."--David Aiken, editor of A City Laid Waste: The Capture, Sack, and Destruction of the City of Columbia

"Millions of Americans devoutly believe that Abraham Lincoln's war 'to preserve the union and free the slaves' was a righteous mission that forms the high point of our country's history. Mr. Cisco, concisely and without emotion, portrays the extent to which that war was waged with gratuitous brutality, persecution, terror, destruction, and murder against the civilian population of the South--free and slave, black and white, rich and poor. And he leaves no doubt that these war crimes were not incidental and accidental but were deliberate, pervasive, and sanctioned at the highest level with malice aforethought. Americans who read War Crimes Against Southern Civilians will have a more sober and true, and less self-righteous, understanding of our country."--Clyde N. Wilson, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History, University of South Carolina

"At last the South is recovering sufficiently from intellectual imperialism for her real scholars and intellectuals to mount a countercharge. Academic history has for many years been written from the standpoint of the war's victors, both in the North and South, but that stranglehold is finally ending. Cisco's volume is yet another volley in that war for truth. Every seeker of the real story behind the sanitised myths of American history should read this book."--James Everett Kibler, author of Memory's Keep and Our Fathers' Fields

Author Walter Brian Cisco has published articles in Southern Partisan, Civil War, and Confederate Veteran. His book Wade Hampton: Confederate Warrior, Conservative Statesman won the Douglas Southall Freeman History Award from the Military Order of the Stars and Bars in 2006. This is his first book with Pelican.

237 of 266 people found the following review helpful. Unreconstructed History By fruitloop Mr. Cisco's flawlessly documented expose of Union Army war crimes rips the carefully constructed facade off Lincoln's "Army of Emancipators." Far from being an army of liberators, Union troops burned, raped, ravaged, and terrorized civilians from east to west. The brutality long overshadowed by federally-sponsored propaganda of Andersonville and Fort Pillow is at last revealed by newspaper accounts, letters, and diaries, many from Washington's own National Archives."We believe in a war of extermination," said Union Brigadier General Lane, whose heroic exploits include the arrest and deaths of wives and teenaged girls whose only crime were blood ties to Confederate guerrillas, the expulsion of tens of thousands of civilians from whole Missouri counties and the complete destruction of their property.General Sherman deliberately turned his back as men pillaged Georgia cities, even allowing them to exhume graves in search of valuables. Free African-Americans as well as southern whites suffered the loss of homes and property, many their lives. The arrival of the northern army of liberation also meant rape and abuse for women of color. Regardless of color or gender, no southerner was spared.Mr. Cisco's scholarly work is a must-read for serious students of the war and professional historians. Politically correct history cannot hide the sins of the past, and a true examination of facts must occur before complete understanding of America's most tragic war can take place. Five stars.

Damning critique of Federal war prosecution By Historian When the Lincoln/Grant/Sherman/Sheridan apologists get a whiff of this one they are going to be apoplectic. The problem of course is that this is such a carefully researched, far-reaching collection of essays whose facts are so compelling what exactly will they criticize? Even more "balanced" northern historians have conceded the excesses from the mid-war on. But this demonstrates a war on civilians not only from the opening shots but across the entire region and across the entire war. The books' release on the eve of the History Channel's (HC) Sherman piece could not have been more timely. Sherman the "liberator"? Stay tuned for Hitler: the Hero of Eastern Europe. This book is a gift and should be mandatory reading in both High Schools and Colleges. It is social history and scholarship at it's best.

So I have little patience with "Lost Cause" romanticizing. Moreover, I know something about the darker side of the Civil War, having been researching its atrocities (executions, dislocation of civilians, scorched earth policies, treatment of POWs, etc) for some years now. Mr. Cisco's account of war crimes in this book is really only the tip of the iceberg. The "Civil" War was most uncivil indeed, and what's truly surprising is that some of its more sordid episodes go untaught in schools and unrecognized by idiot reenactors who think the war was great and glorious. True, Cisco's book isn't as academically rigorous as it might be. But the negative reviews here strain too much to find fault with it. Is the lack of a bibliography really an unforgiveable sin, especially when footnotes are present? Are Cisco and DiLorenzo and other historians who offer nonconventional interpretations of the war really scoundrels and fools? And does it serve any real purpose to exaggerate Cisco's claims (I refer specifically to the reviewer who falsely says that Cisco claims that the depredations of the Union led to Hitler--not at all what he actually said)? Lost Causers who romanticize the war are bad enough. But Lincoln groupies who sugarcoat its horrors are even worse.

By Russell S The primary story "the raft" was long and pretty tedious. the artwork was okay, nothing great or even terrible, just okay. 2 boys build a raft to travel to an island (what island?) One boy has a crush on the other boy and the other boy brings a girl he likes? first, what parent allows their children to be on a raft for days alone? Very implausible and just dull. I will pass over all the other quick stories as the art was terrible and so were the stories, couldn't make heads or tails of them. The only decent story is the last one "Tim" however, the art is atrocious. The story is a good one though. I would actually go 2 stars but I feel generous today.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Dr. Strange: Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Illuminati. By Slim Cat This volume collects issues 13-17.The Illuminati just keep getting more and more disconnected from humanity as the Incursion situations keep getting more and more dire. They still have no clue as to what triggered the multiverse to start crashing into each other causing parallel Earths to either both collide or one to explode from the sheer intensity of crossing another reality and into it's orbit. Hickman continues to weave a crazy sci-fi heavy intense plot as he turns out the most dense volume yet of an already dense series. I still have to reread this volume again and again to really get it, which is not a bad thing as this series is enjoyable and fascinating.Issues 13-15 are very exposition heavy. Hickman does a nice job of how to dump a lot of info while still having some kind of action happening. Each issue essentially covers the role of the three groups of beings that "benefit" from these incursion events happening. This all starts when the heavy thinkers of the Illuminati use Reed Richards' Bridge, a nice callback to Hickman's stellar Fantastic Four run, to view parallel earths as incursion events are happening. The results are horrifying as they watch what happens when the Mapmakers, Black Priests, and the Black Swans, one of which they have imprisoned, take part in the collision of worlds.Again, these three chapters are very info heavy. Hickman uses a nice bit of symmetry as he opens each of these chapters with the parallel earth Reed Richards of that earth's Illuminati repeat the 616 (main Marvel earth) Reed's opening speech back in issue one of New Avengers, "Everything dies". It is cool to then see a slightly different lineup of Illuminati members, like Magneto and Dr. Doom on for Prof. X and Dr. Strange. In the first two issues the 616 members see modern versions of themselves dealing with the Mapmakers and Black Priests with, let us just say disappointing results. The third shows a future group with the rare group of Black Swans doing what they do, which turns out to be the worst possible outcome of the three groups. Again, little progressing of the story and action, lots of info. Hickman does manage to get a few good character moments between the group assembled.Hickman also, in these three issues, shows the exploits of Dr. Strange as he breaks off from the group to upgrade his powers in order to deal with the incoming worlds and invaders. The place he goes to and what he does is really amazing and makes me crave a Dr. Strange solo title preferably written by Hickman so bad. Also, the Illuminati's prisoners are stirring...The art for these chapters is handled with illustrations by Simone Bianchi and colors by Adriano Dall'Alpi who altogether bring a very murky style and mood which sums up the Illuminati perfectly right now. Bianchi uses very sketchy line work that kinda makes for some weird figures at times but is overall really good.Chapters 16 and 17 are really interesting. They split between having Namor and Black Panther getting along better which leads to an unsettling moment between the two disgraced leaders. They also watch an earth that has overcome numerous incursion events. A world populated by heroes that are seemingly familiar, like caricatures from another comic book publisher. Hickman even takes moments to compare and contrast each of the big two's pantheons. And also, the 616 earth is headed for an incursion with that one. A real highlight is seeing Sun God (cough, Superman, cough) do a take on Reed's "Everything Dies" speech. Hickman would do the grandaddy of all superheros very well. I hope he gets to do a run on one of his proper titles sometime in his career. It is rather fitting that long time DC artist Rags Morales would be the illustrator for these two issues, with colors by Frank Martin, who really invokes a nice traditional superhero style. With all that has been laid out wanting the next volume now is an understatement as this continues to wow and stand out amongst the superhero books as something really different and unique. Hickman is killing it on this title and although this volume is still a big info dump it still has some great character moments, especially Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Namor, and the incursion surviving earth heros. Bring on the further escapades of the Illuminati!

By Culleton What we've learned so far in New Avengers:Parallel Earths are colliding with each other, which destroys both planets, and each parallel universe at the same time, unless one is saved by destroying the other first.Reed Richards discovered this phenomena and assembled the Illuminati to combat the threat.During the first planetary incursion, the Black Panther apprehended a female humanoid alien called the Black Swan who had destroyed one of the planets. She has been kept on Wakanda and monitored and questioned by the Illuminati.T'Challa and Namor have a bit of a feud going on between them. There may now be spoilers ahead:In this volume, Jonathan Hickman delves deeper into the mystery surrounding the Black Swan, whilst the Illuminati try to discover ways to stop their Earth from being destroyed by more incursions. The volume begins with an alternative Illuminati team on a parallel Earth discussing the same problem. Back on Earth 616, Richards discovers from the Black Swan that he could build a device to monitor these parallel universes to find a pattern or a solution that could help them. He has built such a device before, a device known as the Bridge, so he brings it out of mothballs (or builds a new one, it's not clear) to tweak it to suit their new needs. They then observe the alternative Illuminati team from Earth 23099 being decimated by beings calling themselves the Black Priests who then destroy that Earth.Meanwhile, Doctor Strange is fed up with having the power of the Sorcerer Supreme at his disposal and not being able to do anything about these threats. He decides to embrace the writings within the Blu'Dakor - the Blood Bible; arcane and possibly forbidden magics that transport him to a different astral plane called the Lost Lands where he begins to seek darker supernatural power. This will no doubt come at a price. We discover another alternative Earth being destroyed, this time by a cosmic race called the Mapmakers, whilst our heroes continue to monitor parallel universes via the Bridge. During one such observation, we learn of a team of superheroes on a parallel Earth known as The Great Society. This team managed to stop an incursion with their world by destroying the incoming Earth. The volume concludes with the Great Society being victorious once more and then it ends on a cliffhanger as we discover that our Illuminati will face the Great Society as both their worlds will eventually collide. This era of the New Avengers just keeps getting better and better. With so much mystery from the first 2 volumes now becoming clearer, I am aching to find out what happens next. Hickman is slowly building up what he has been working on for a while (presumably several years in fact, with the Bridge first appearing in 2009's Dark Reign: Fantastic Four) and he keeps us hooked with his various nibbles. There's so much going on; and not all of it yet answered. What has become of Doctor Strange? Has the fire between Namor and T'Challa cooled? Will we ever find out Black Swan's purpose? Are the Black Priests or the Mapmakers headed our way? And just how will our heroes convince the Great Society that their world must be destroyed to save Earth 616?Buy this you must, but you also must read volumes 1 and 2 to get the full picture - this is not a standalone volume. But it is rather good.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not much more than filler By J'aime “The original design had a contained singularity powering an uncertainty engine. Attached to that was a variable imager to accurately interpret data mined from alternate realities.” Usually, technobabble is a good way to reminder readers that the speaker is a genius and add some extra punch to the story. However, when nearly all the dialog is technobabble, it becomes a chore to read because you realize nothing is happening. The Black Swan tells the Illuminati they need a “mirror,” a machine for observing other Earths/universes to see how they deal with Incursion. Naturally, Reed knows how to build one and the watching begins. Essentially, the entire volume is just a means to show the heroes the enemies Swan’s been mentioning before, the Black Priests, the Mapmakers, etc, and how they have been brutally exploiting the Incursions to their gain.Overall, this volume is nothing more than filler. That’s all the New Avengers series is. There isn’t enough action in the Incursion storyline to fill up the Avengers series, let alone another series too. So, readers get pages and pages of technobabble and some pretty artwork and that’s about it. I wish I had stuck with the individual hero titles. Only sheer stubbornness keeps me going here: I already bought the books and I just can’t believe it won’t get better.

Filled with great photos of and just enough information about topics like war correspondants to get you interested, really just enough to whet your appetite. A great book to learn the history of the typewriter, though.

The sentiments in this review are my own, however. If I didn't like the book, I would not say I did.I am a big fan of Akash's. If you buy Akash's books, you should not expect deep, scholarly coverage of the subject matter. I have a bunch of those types of books, and they are seldom practical for the average person (like me) who just wants to apply the subject in my own life. Don't expect a comprehensive coverage of the art of small talk, along with endnote references to small talk-related peer-reviewed journals. Most authors of bad reviews of Akash's books seem to expect exactly that kind of book. What Akash writes are quick guides for those of us who want to learn how to quickly better ourselves in various areas - public speaking, book authoring, presentations, and now small talk - but we don't want to spend months reading a book. He does this wonderfully. He provides brief summaries of the different subject areas. My two favorite things are the book are:* He provides brief "try this" paragraphs at the end of each section. These provide simple, easily done exercises that lead you to some particular area. For example, he has a "try this" that says "If you struggle with making eye contact when you meet someone new, try turning it into a little game. Challenge yourself to pay attention to their eye color." This was an excellent hint that actually works!* He comes right out and says he's also an introvert and struggles with small talk. You don't get the impression that he's some great small talker; you get the feeling that he's just like us, and these tips and tricks are exactly what's helped him. It's much more encouraging this way, because he doesn't seem special and different; he's just like me, only he's discovered a process he wants to share with me.In short, I recommend this short book, and am already starting to see its benefits in my own life.

By Sweet Pea This book is packed full of great tips and strategies for improving one's communication skills based on solid research. Each chapter tackles a different issue and provides very clear suggestions and several action tips. I was particularly impressed by the attention the author gives to developing charisma. In my personal experience, too many people seem to believe that you are either born charismatic or not. The author refutes that by providing some very good tips for developing charisma. The other area I found particularly impressive was the attention and detail he provides on the importance of developing active listening skills. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn a lot about communication without wading through a bunch of feely-touchy fluff.

The late nineteenth and early twentieth century were a brutal time for American wildlife, with many species pushed to the brink of extinction. (Some are endangered to this day.) And yet these decades also saw the dawn of the conservationist movement. Into this contradictory era came William Temple Hornaday, a larger-than-life dynamo who almost uncannily embodies these conflicting threads in our history.

In The Most Defiant Devil, a compelling new biography of this complex figure, Gregory Dehler explores the life of Hornaday the hunter, museum builder, zoologist, author, conservationist, and anti-Bolshevist crusader. A deeply religious man, he was nonetheless anything but peaceful and was racist even by his era’s standards, going so far as to display an Mbuti pygmy as a "living specimen" in a zoo. A passionate hunter, Hornaday killed thousands of animals, including some of the last wild buffalo in America, but he was far ahead of his time in his influential views on the protection of wildlife. Hornaday designed and built the New York Zoological Park (which became the Bronx Zoo) and was chief taxidermist for what would later become the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. In this single, fascinating individual, we can discern some of the Progressive Era's most destructive forces and some of its most enlightened visions.

Fine, but not what I hoped for By jd103 I bought this book after first learning of Hornaday in the book Wild Ones: A Sometimes Dismaying, Weirdly Reassuring Story About Looking at People Looking at Animals in America. The author of that book seemed fascinated by Hornaday and made me very interested as well. From that reading, Hornaday obviously had plenty of faults but seemed a predecessor of more recent outspoken people I've admired. I wanted to learn more about why there was a mountain named after him here in Yellowstone. This book, however, had a more detached biographical tone and made Hornaday seem more unlikable to me. The book is certainly well researched but many pages are spent on vitriolic exchanges between Hornaday and other men of his time, while there is only passing mention of the fact that he apparently inspired Aldo Leopold, a relationship I would have been much more interested in reading about. And there's no mention of that mountain in Yellowstone.I certainly know more about Hornaday than I did before reading the book, but I didn't find any of the inspiration I was hoping for.
