In the time when plaque’s shrouding the land and the walking corpses were ruling the earth, a young girl “Lydia” was one of the few survivors in this harsh era. She's so determined to avenge the death of her lover who was brutally murdered by a group of gangsters lead by “Stone”. She's getting by in this god forsaken land by using her “particular female skills” to join gangs that might lead her closer and closer to the man she swore to kill. She may look soft and fragile from the outside but the strength within her is beyond measure. How will she live in the world where there are more dead than the livings but the livings are much more fearsome.

It would be nice to get the full backstory for Lydia, especially the info on how her lover was killed by Stone. (And what gender the lover was, since one of the artists is a well known yuri comic artist.)It is a great comic, even with the awkward wording here and there.

For three decades, Sri Lanka’s civil war tore communities apart. In 2009, the Sri Lankan army finally defeated the separatist Tamil Tigers guerrillas in a fierce battle that swept up about 300,000 civilians and killed more than 40,000. More than a million had been displaced by the conflict, and the resilient among them still dared to hope. But the next five years changed everything.

Rohini Mohan’s searing account of three lives caught up in the devastation looks beyond the heroism of wartime survival to reveal the creeping violence of the everyday. When city-bred Sarva is dragged off the streets by state forces, his middle-aged mother, Indra, searches for him through the labyrinthine Sri Lankan bureaucracy. Meanwhile, Mugil, a former child soldier, deserts the Tigers in the thick of war to protect her family.

Having survived, they struggle to live as the Sri Lankan state continues to attack minority Tamils and Muslims, frittering away the era of peace. Sarva flees the country, losing his way – and almost his life – in a bid for asylum. Mugil stays, breaking out of the refugee camp to rebuild her family and an ordinary life in the village she left as a girl. But in her tumultuous world, desires, plans, and people can be snatched away in a moment.

The Seasons of Trouble is a startling, brutal, yet beautifully written debut from a prize-winning journalist. It is a classic piece of reportage, five years in the making, and a trenchant, compassionate examination of the corrosive effect of conflict on a people. From the Hardcover edition.

The Seasons of Trouble: Life Amid the Ruins of Sri Lanka's Civil War, by Rohini Mohan

Review “The Seasons of Trouble is devastatingly good. Rohini Mohan’s intimately rendered account of the brutal end-game and unfinished aftermath of Sri Lanka’s civil war is breathtakingly well-told. By focusing on the lives of three Tamils and telling their stories in novelistic detail, Mohan has revealed a modern tragedy of truly epic proportions. Haunting and unforgettable.” —Jon Lee Anderson, New Yorker “A remarkable feat of empathy. Mohan paints her characters with such emotional richness that it’s hard to believe the work is not a product of her imagination but of five years of painstaking reporting.” —Adrian Chen, Slate (“Best Books of 2014”) “Mohan captures a country of dueling narratives as irreconcilable as those of the Palestinians and the Israelis, of suspicions and betrayals instigated by an all-powerful security apparatus.” —New York Review of Books “Using three lives—an abducted son, a searching mother, and a child soldier—Mohan gets close enough to show the unraveling of not only a people but individuals and families … Mohan combines years of superb journalism with a novelist’s touch to give a vividly brutal and beautiful look at humans surviving the still-violent aftermath of a civil war.” —Guernica “A penetrating account of the stories of Tamil survivors of the conflict.” —LA Review of Books “Gripping and profoundly moving ... Rohini Mohan has produced an astonishing feat of reportage.”—Charles Mahtesian, NPR (“2014’s Great Reads”) “In large part a chronicle of war and its aftermath, Mohan’s impressive study is also a Kafkaesque story of survival in a society riven by ethnic tensions and mutual distrust.” —Lucy Popescu, Times Literary Supplement “Extraordinary rendering of the brutal denouement of the war between the Sri Lankan state and the Tamil rebels … The effect of these three interwoven narratives is haunting, and The Seasons of Trouble is a work of daring empathy. Mohan manages to give us direct access to the worldview of impoverished Tamil villagers and the seemingly Faustian choices they face … This is Sri Lanka’s tragedy, but it is also Mohan’s triumph.”—Anand Gopal, Bookforum “Governments seriously contemplating Sri Lanka’s model would be wise to read The Seasons of Trouble. It isn’t a traditional political study, but Mohan doesn’t intend it to be. Instead, by focusing intimately on the lives of three individuals—their daily struggles, the shared hurt and trauma—she has produced an ambitious, thoroughly engrossing work that informs the mind while simultaneously unsettling the heart.” —The American Interest “Seasons of Trouble, though nonfiction, does what novels do best: it allows us into the hearts and minds of people who might be very different from us, but with whom we come to have a great empathy through inhabiting their lives.” —Shyam Selvadurai, author of Funny Boy and The Hungry Ghosts “Poetic … a thoroughly absorbing book.” —Economist “A significant, though heartrending, account.” —Alan Moores, BooklistFrom the Hardcover edition.

By Alex Strick van Linschoten For some books, as you near the end you speed up as the plot comes to its inevitable conclusion, eager to find out how the story ends. For others, you slow down, not only because the themes of the book have started to intertwine around and inbetween one another, but also because you realise that soon this book will come to an end and this companion of the past few hours or days will start becoming but a memory. This is superb book. I can hardly imagine how the author managed to put it together. It reads like a novel yet feels so immediate as well.I had read Ondaatje's 'Anil's Ghost' in the past, but wasn't left with a very strong sense of Sri Lanka or its history. With this book, I feel I've learnt a lot.Just take my word for it. Buy this book. Read it. Thank me later. You'll be better of for having read it.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Book for every Tamil to read By TP Sampath excellent book. I was moved by the empathy, care for facts, style and quality of narration, plot and editing. The book has become close to my heart and I pray more people in India and the world read it . The misery the innocent Tamils went thru in Sri Lanka touches you and tells you how unconcerned we in India became when the world is so well connected. The story of Mugil and Sarva takes you thru the turbulent times in Sri Lanka and how people find inner reserves to survive and prevails against odds.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Factually and emotionally honest By Rajesh Mehar Most people only know the vague contours of Sri Lanka's civil war. But beyond the official 'terrorist organization' tag of the LTTE and the tumultuous relationship between India and Sri Lanka in the wake of the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi lies the twisted history of the prolonged conflict between the Sri Lankan state and the Tamil separatists. SEASONS OF TROUBLE by ROHINI MOHAN not only lays out the facts of the Sri Lankan civil war but also helps the reader empathize with every single victim of the system of war, whether Sinhalese or Tamil. You've probably read from the plot synopsis that the book traces the life and travails of three Sri Lankan Tamils through the civil war and after it. But, more than that, the book tells as much of the stories as it can of the people surrounding these three protagonists. Children, mothers, husbands, brothers, friends, business partners, accomplices, social workers, almost everyone in the country is trapped in a cycle of hate, frustration, and misery caused by the interminable conflict. However, even within these troubled times, Ms Mohan manages to show us the ways in which ordinary people eke out joy whether it's Sarva's mother and aunt cooking his favorite food to deliver it to him in prison or Mugil's family play acting a revolution to feel like victors rather than victims in the war.Every single sentence in this book is meaningful and intent-ful. Although the term is often overused on bestseller backflaps, this book is actually 'unputdownable'. If you only read one book this year, let it be this one.

Space, Sputnik, and a Sirius Drink, by Mike Andrews

About the Author From the age of six, Michael Andrews loved the toy business. His first job was delivering doll parts in NYC for his mother’s doll company. He grew up (in a way...) into a designer, gizmo-maker and sculptor and moved to Los Angeles, the capital of cool. After many years designing toys for THAT large company, he broke free with a great idea and a portfolio filled with dog drawings. With help from family, friends and writing partner Lisa Sirlin Hall, Mike created a loving homage to his three Dachshunds: The Adventures of László & Zazie. Los Angeles native Lisa Sirlin Hall grew up in warm Southern California weather amidst eclectic culture, architecture and design. After studying communication arts at Otis College of Art and Design, she embarked on a creative career as a children's digital entertainment producer and a writer for THAT large streaming network. Lisa lives in Los Angeles with her husband Tracy and thinks dogs are fantastic ...especially when they drink cocktails. Her next writing project with Mike focuses on her own three trouble-prone cats who seriously lack social skills.

The witty combination of historical and futuristic makes for a rollicking good adventure. The writing is sharp and humorous, with a bunch of fun references (and some valuable drink recipes – especially the Tolstoy Tang!). The illustrations are amazing! I felt like a kid in the best of ways – inspecting every inch of the drawings to make sure I didn't miss a thing. The three Dachshunds – László, Zazie, and Scrapple – are the ultimate protagonists! By the end, it's clear that the authors are working up future Doxie exploits. Pour me a Martini! I'll be along for the ride!

Not really for the kiddies, Mike's delightful illustrations are the highlight of this book, based on the real life adventures of his frenetic Doxies. Hopefully, this is the first in a whole series of sirius adventures for these Kool Kat Kanines!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. DELIGHTFULLY WICKED !!! By jlswainsboro/Judy Lewis Wowza! Flesh is an amazing new series by Sky Corgan and it is smokin hot! I love it! In Book One, Corgan expertly sets the stage for her story with an introduction to Flesh, an amazing experience for those who would like to safely test the waters in the world of BDSM with as much or as little as their heart desires. And oh my good glory, is it ever sexy! In Book Two, Corgan now delves into the development and personality of the characters. In Book Three, Corgan begins to build the heat to a slow sensual burn! And now in Book Four, Corgan kicks up the heat to a RED HOT BLAZE! Oh my! Somebody call 911! Sky Corgan is a woman on fire and judging by what I've read so far, this is just the beginning! Good Golly Miss Molly - I am now officially hooked - hook, line and sinker! The story is exciting, thrilling, enticing, compelling, erotic, sensual and steamy. The dialogue is smart, seductive, arousing, very well written and flows effortlessly. The characters are fascinating, captivating, engaging, intriguing and sexy as sin. Corgan uses her amazing talent, unparalleled skill and unique style to brilliantly combine these elements into a wonderfully entertaining and satisfying read. Amy Underwood is in a rut. Her life is boring and she hasn't had sex in seven years. She loves her job as an interior designer and decorator at Environ Design and Derrick, her gay, work boyfriend is great but none of that satisfies her sexual needs. God, so pathetic! Her roommate Janice finally convinces her to sign up for a session at Flesh but good lord, she's never even had sex unless she was in a relationship. How in the world is she supposed to be naked in front of some stranger much less participate in some kinky BDSM scene. Oh well, maybe she could just dip a toe to see if the water is warm. Just one time, that's all. Maybe then her roommate will stop bugging her about it. Yep, she'll try it once and never go back. Or will she? But her mysterious, sexy one night only Dom, only known as "Sir", just may have something else in mind. Oh my! Was their chance client meeting strictly a coincidence or was it "strictly" set up by none other than Mr Mystery Man himself, wealthy, well known plastic surgeon, Dr Lucian Reddick? Hmmm.......I wonder??? It seems the dominant Dr Reddick has plans for the lovely shy Amy Underwood. And what are those plans? Well, I don't like to give spoilers but I will say that we see a little more of what he has planned for the lovely innocent Amy in this installment but I suspect the best is yet to come! And his plans may include a lot more than working with her to redecorate his home. And just what will Amy do to keep her job! Amy has already dipped a toe to test the water but she better know how to swim because she's definitely in deep water and apparently she can't decide if she wants to sink, or swim with Sir. Hmmm.......Yowza! I guess we'll find out more in Book Five! I can hardly wait! Oh, Oh, Oh! It's just so exciting! I was turning the pages so fast, my IPad couldn't keep up! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!

She explains that she's writing these mini books as a sort of public service announcement, doing readers a favor. She writes that she's keeping these glorified pamphlets....sorry I mean books sweet and short so you can read them in under an hour while waiting for a doctor's appt...what a gal! I mean, isn't that what People magazine is for? By Book 4, Lucien Reddick is a dick of epic proportions...literally and figuratively. Now our poor heroine is beginning to act less like a sub wannabe and more like a prostitute, because she's now afraid she will lose her job. So far, Lucien has very little redeeming social value. Interestingly enough, the couple has very little dialogue. all of the the dialogue right now is in the heroine's head. Also, consent is somewhat vague in this book, other than their initial meeting. Sadly, there is no end in sight. I will continue to read this story as long as they are available on KU. however, I would never pay for this story. Interestingly enough, I would have most likely purchased this if it came out in real book form, but does anyone actually write real books any more? Oh yes, successful authors who don't bastardize their talent for .99.

This series just keeps me coming back for more. That has to tell you how much I love this series! However, the hot Doc Lucien, is just too "hot and cold" IMHO. After some awesome sex, he becomes so "dismissive", and that bothers me! As for Amy, well, his behavior has her constantly second guessing herself, and how she feels about Lucien, as well as how he feels about her. I feel bad for a somewhat insecure woman being put through the emotional wringer every time they are together. Pure Torture.Looking forward to the next installment, but jeez, this hot Doc has some emotional issues of his own. He is also too manipulative and controlling. Maybe thats why he's a Dom? Hope to find out more about him, and why he's associated with Flesh. I hope Sky gets back to the story of Flesh. That background was very Interesting.

They have a special place in my heart due to their iconic characters and rich history, however, I would be remiss as a critic and a writer to say that DC has had a stellar track record since the inception of the NEW 52. On top of that, it seems as-if any remote possibly of a decent, interesting series taking the place of a dud is nearly and impossible wish. The slower selling comics remain, while the mid-tier serials are replaced with even more, uninteresting work.I thought was such the case when DC decided to include a Superman/Wonder Woman comic book into their NEW 52 line-up. It seemed like a gag or a hoax— Something to get people riled up because its cover is graced with the two most powerful beings in the DC Universe passionately embracing with locked lips. From the get-go, I automatically assumed that it would be piss poor comic; usually the ones based solely on a publicity stunt are half-assed and thus poorly penciled and written.I, however, was contracted to review the first volume of Superman/Wonder Woman entitled, Power Couple, and thus was required to read it. As it turns out:It’s phenomenal.Superman/Wonder Woman, Vol. 1 is one of the best Superman story arcs that I have read in a long while. The story is superbly written and includes numerous layers from DC’s reimagining of the Superman/Wonder Woman lore to a high-octane tale of their own that sits perfectly nestled within the story arcs of their very own serials. The underlying pretense is that (yes)…Superman and Wonder Woman are in a relationship. What makes the relationship interesting is how the two characters handle it. Wonder Woman embraces who she is and her powers, so she wants to honest and public with their relationship. She sees it as their duty, and that they are better than humanity because of their superpowers. Superman being raised human and having a more-intimate and necessary connection to people (especially considering his alter ego, Clark Kent) thinks that they should hide their relationship to protect humanity. This dichotomy creates wonderful dialogue. Superman and Wonder Woman are together, but they are also always at odds— Eternally struggling to be with one another with opposing opinions. This is incredibly universal, and I think a lot of couples will find themselves relating to the two’s predicament.Interlaced with the aforementioned subplot is the inclusion and subsequent conflict between Superman and Wonder Woman’s families. The Greek Gods have no respect for a man “who comes from the stars,” just in the same way that Supes’ Kryptonian, Phantom Zone brethren hate humanity and their Gods, yet they are more than willing to work together in order to try and prevent Superman and Wonder Woman from being together.Factor in some truly fantastic artwork and a brilliant lead-up to the newest Doomsday story arc and you’ve got yourself a brilliant graphic novel, that was unfortunately overshadowed by cheap PR tricks. Tony Daniel pencils Superman and Wonder Woman in fine, colorful detail. The two are believable together, but more importantly when their worlds crossover they are believable, as well. This is a facet of the DC Universe that DC Comics has trouble with— Cohesion. Oftentimes, Batman feels out of place on the Justice League’s Watch Tower, just in the same as any other DC character has trouble fitting in the confines of Gotham and Bat title. Daniel pulls it off though. When Wonder Woman is Diane and with Clark Kent at a club it makes sense visually. When Superman is visiting Mount Olympus with Wonder Woman…it makes sense. The level of consistency and believability that Charles Soule and Tony Daniel bring to the characters makes Superman/Wonder Woman, Vol. 1: Power Couple well-worth the read. If you are at all interested in Superman and/or Wonder Woman I highly recommend reading this graphic novel. It is one that shouldn’t be missed.

DC I apologise for all the bad things I have said about you and your comics; yes they were stereotypes and clearly they are no longer true, or perhaps never were. I do still however have an intense hatred for what I refer to as ‘super’ super heroes, those ones that make the other characters irrelevant by being stronger, faster and more powerful in every way. I compare it to a soldier surrounded by babies; you could add another 100 babies and it won’t help him in any way other than a bit of ablative armour at shin height. You put any number of ‘street level’ heroes around Superman and all they do is get in his way, or give him something to save*. It takes a writing genius to work them into a team and have everyone still feel useful or relevant, or you simply do it better by ensuring everyone around them is just as powerful and their villains equally so.Charles Soule gets this absolutely spot on and he is rapidly becoming one of my favourite writers, taking subjects that I am less interested in and making them into classics. This has jumped from being just another DC title that I ignore into a book I will have to not only continue to read, but also back track and get the ones I have missed (these trades always come out after a fair few issues have past after them from the big companies). I cannot think of a book currently in print that encapsulates what I like in comics more thoroughly than this. Recently my favourite has been ‘Thor God of Thunder’ because, as well as being an exceptional book, it too played to my preferences and this just eclipsed it.What also attracts me to this book is the mythology. That goes for both main characters, but especially Diana. I love anything relating to Ancient Greek or Roman gods and this book uses that to great effect. I never tire of seeing a different interpretation of the deities and this book gives me that by the cartload. It also provides me with my favourite moment as Superman confronts Apollo for besmirching his sister. A solar powered god only makes the mistake of supercharging a Kryptonian once and it is a good job he is immortal and can actually learn from his mistake. So, this book gives me characters that I previously hated because they were misused, puts them up against villains who can genuinely hurt them, explores their backgrounds in new depths; can this get any better? Well yes, it can, because the book is jaw-droppingly beautiful. This is the closet I have seen to cover art throughout the entire book. It is one of the common complaints I hear when people are suckered in by a stunning cover to find interior art that is nothing like it at all. This book is crisp, cleans, immaculate and it starts on the front cover and ends with the last page without so much as a line out of place. I would continue to pick this book up for the art alone it is just that darn pretty. There is not much more I can say about this book. It has taken a life long dislike of DC comics and turned it a full 180; it is the best looking book I have seen, definitely this year, possible ever and it makes two overpowered characters so weighed down with history and so iconic that their names are used generically and makes them new and exciting.

By Slim Cat This volume collects issues 1-7.One of the biggest controversies of the New 52 launch happened in issue twelve of Justice League, written b Geoff Johns and illustrated by Jim Lee, where Superman and Wonder Woman kiss and the start of a romantic relationship between two of the heaviest hitters in the DCU kicks off. It was surprising that they decided to publish this series, just on premise alone. A series about the romantic relationship between Superman and Wonder Woman? Can that work? And yes, yes it does. The series also has it's action and adventure and takes a close examination of the two icons and how they compare and contrast. Plus it was good timing to release another Superman billed book as his popularity has been nicely climbing, and as much of a treat Azzarello's run has been it is very self contained and does not play in the greater DCU too much (which has been one of it's charms) but it's nice to see Wonder Woman get spotlight in another series as she is the first and one of the greatest female superheros. Much credit to the multi-talented writer Charles Soule who just keeps adding to his star as he doesn't know how to say no when offered work at DC or Marvel for any character or team. Plus, stunning artwork by Tony Daniel and crew helps a lot.The story starts with Superman and Wonder Woman out on patrol and hear of a violent storm coming through a fleet of ships and go in to help. What they meet is Doomsday. Yeah, right off the bat, after some good character work with our iconic heros they get smacked into a beast of a villain. How they manage to overcome is well done and sets the stage for what's to come nicely. The real story of this volume is the New 52 introduction of Zod and Faora. Very nicely done, but as I don't like with a lot of the New 52 introductions of "old" characters presented anew, their pre 52 history and connections are hinted at and teased but never fully explained. Everything is rushed because there is so much going on. Zod still has had some sort of relationship with Superman's father, Jor-El and it just gets touched on in very exposition laced dialogue that kills momentum and feels like a pick your favorite history between these two families and fill in the blanks sort of a thing. Their interactions are still well done and it's cool to see just how little Superman still does not know of his culture, in the New 52, and how Zod uses that to his advantage. Very well written for the most part. There is also an incorporating of Wonder Woman's world that is very fun and intriguing. Her family of Gods are very disapproving of Superman and there is some highlight stuff here when they meet, especially between Superman and Apollo. Spoiler: they fight. And it is a good one. It is also really cool to see Wonder Woman talk to her friend Hessia about Kal (Superman) and why the need for a duel identity, and how she just wants their relationship to be public. On the flip side, Kal and Bruce (Batman, if you did not catch on to that as he needs to make fifty cameos a month) talk about how the world may see this and not respond well to two of the most powerful beings on earth dating. Since, Superman has his duel identities, the series also addresses his life as human being Clark Kent and his trying to run a blog with also former Daily Planet employee Cat Grant. One major plot twist occurs when Cat is given a huge scoop from a mysterious source that rocks Superman and Wonder Woman's world. The artwork is top notch here. There are some fill in artists but the best of the best is when Tony Daniel is illustrating, inked by Sandu Florea, and colored by Tomeu Morey, who all do the bulk of this volume. Tony Daniel is one of my top illustrators and he shines here as usual. It is sad that he will be done with this title soon, but also cool he is doing the new Deathstroke series as he can cut loose on some really violent crazy stuff.Great series, leading to a very good looking crossover, of which I normally dislike. But the Superman: Doomed event looks pretty good with mostly Soule and Greg Pak, helming a big Superman Doomsady showdown with what seems like some cool and interesting developments thrown in. Plus artwork by the likes of Tony Daniel, Aaron Kuder, and Ken Lashley is just more icing on the cake. I will skip volume two of this series and just go with the Doomed crossover collection as DC seems to be learning from past mistakes. The previous volumes of Action and this series end before the crossover and then their next volumes collect the issues of the crossover, which just seems like a waste on DC's part, but oh well. Cannot wait to check out Pak and Kuder's take in Superman - Action Comics Vol. 5: What Lies Beneath (The New 52) and then get to Doomed and maybe check out volume three of this series as writer Peter Tomasi and illustrator Doug Manke take over. Not a bad following creative team in the least. Best wishes to Charles Soule as he just went Marvel exclusive to try and bring down his work load and focus more on a few titles instead of taking on so much. He is really good. And so is this series.

The advent of electron microscopes has opened up new vistas in the field of science. The ultrastructural morphological evidence offered by electron microscope to substantiate and support other findings is highly rewarding. This book gives a comprehensive overview of the principle and operations of the electron microscope. Numerous electron micrographs have been provided to acquaint the reader with the appearance of highly magnified features seen through the EM. This book would definitely create “a feel for this subject” particularly among those who want to use this technique for their research work.

In 2008, a small-scale flour miller from British Columbia's Sunshine Coast created a handmade bike mill to attract a dedicated farmers' market following. Chris Hergesheimer wanted to challenge the belief that there is only one way - the big way - to grow, process and market grain and flour. For Chris and his family, it wasn't about profit, but connecting a community to its food producers for better health, lower impact on the environment, and the kind of flapjacks only fresh-milled flour can make. But Chris Hergesheimer and his brother Josh could not have predicted that this unique contraption would take them on the journey of their lives. Committed to their cause, and believing in its value despite the dismal economic outlook, the Hergesheimer brothers follow their passion for local on a transcontinental journey. From the rainforests of Roberts Creek, BC, to the bustling streets of Kampala, Uganda, and finally onwards to the village of Panlang in the northwestern corner of South Sudan, THE FLOUR PEDDLER is the story of two community-minded entrepreneurs as they set out to build and deliver their bicycle-powered grain mill to a rural women's cooperative in a tiny village. Chris and Josh come face to face with the realities of life in South Sudan when war breaks out and their microcapitalism mission becomes a race to leave the country before violence makes escape impossible. Part grain-chain analysis, part bare-all exposé, THE FLOUR PEDDLER is a unique and grippingstory that explores the trends and issues of local food systems as well as the challenges and power of alternative food movements. For the Hergesheimer brothers, it is also a journey of surprising adventure, from broken-down market vans, fraudulent bus tickets and hungry bears to a Russian helicopter, an attempted coup and a heart-wrenching homecoming.

Girl in Dior (Biographies), by Annie Goetzinger

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—This is a appealing graphic novel, gorgeously illustrated by French costume designer and illustrator Goetzinger. The story covers the 1947 groundbreaking first fashion show put on by designer Christian Dior, when he introduced weary post-World War II patrons to the "New Look"—yards and yards of fabric and fantasy after years of shortages and short skirts. We watch the magic happen through the eyes of Clara Nohant, a young "fashion chronicler," a fictional character injected into the story amid real-life modistes, drapers, pattern makers, muses, magazine editors, and movie stars who surrounded the designer. Particularly informative and educational are the representations of all the hard work that went into the creation of a Dior "line": from conception to realization to presentation, and the loyalty, inspiration, and support the designer's team provided him. Goetzinger's renderings of each character, from Dior's beloved dog "Bobby" to French grandmères to Hollywood icons is distinct and memorable in every respect. And the clothes! The sweep and drape of the gowns and the exquisite cut of the suits and hats will make would-be designers and future fashion chroniclers shiver. Clara's fairy-tale journey from journalist to model to Dior confidante and client feels as fresh as if it happened last week. VERDICT This title is like a perfect Dior creation: stunningly designed, lavishly beautiful, effortlessly elegant. Fashionistas and fashionistos of all ages will devour this book hungrily.—Liz French, Library Journal

Review

“Great gift idea.”  —Elle "Just like with Dior’s work, the allure of this graphic novel is in the visuals, and Goetzinger draws the reader into the glamorous world of Dior’s Paris with her gentle but intricately detailed linework." —Oliver Sava, A.V. Club "Goetzinger's illustrations are clean and crisp, just like Dior's dresses, and her use of color, such as when a new collection is introduced and needs to be shown as both bold and understated, is masterly. And there’s a lot of tension in the story. After the war, Dior and his clients may have been wealthy, but most French people were still living hand to mouth. In an early scene, Clara is staging a photo shoot at a farmers’ market. When one of the models casually bites into an apple, the poor vendors go nuts because food is still being rationed." —Wally Bubelis, unshelved.com

“A portrait full of lightness and class, capable of charming even men, so you can imagine how women will love this.”  —Le Figaro“Girl in Dior, by Annie Goetzinger, a grande dame of comics in France, will be published in the U.S. by NBM in March. In addition to her work in comics, Ms. Goetzinger has done theater costume design and fashion illustrations for Le Monde. Her book is a biography of Christian Dior couched in a fictional Cinderella story about a fashion reporter plucked to become a model. It includes endnotes drawn from Ms. Goetzinger’s archival research." —Jennifer Maloney, Wall St. Journal"This is for fans of beauty and refinement, both in comics and in clothing, an indulgent present for those who love fashion and the female form." —Publishers Weekly"In sweeping tableaux and panels, she deftly captures the movement and drape of fabric with a line that’s a more sensual take on the traditional Franco-Belgian comics style of her contemporaries . . . In any language, it make readers nostalgic for the elegance and artistry of a bygone fashion scene." —Nathalie Atkinson, the Globe and Mail"A hymn to beauty, and - through Clara's personal story - to optimism and endurance." —Anna Battista, irenebrination.typepad.com"Writer/artist Annie Goetzinger is one of France’s best-known names, and it’s obvious why. Her art here is skilled and spare, focusing the eye exactly where needed with nary an extra line or cross-hatch. This elegant, airy look is abetted by a color palette almost entirely in pastels. While fashion isn’t to everyone’s taste, Girl in Dior can be." —Andrew A. Smith, Indiana Gazette"The familiar nipped waists and full skirts of Dior's famous New Look silhouette are rendered in beautiful detail." —Lisa Niven, Vogue UK"This comic, ultimately, is not about just fashion, but about how fashion and clothing affected and reflected the lives of women as the entire world recovered from great tragedy." —Janelle Asselin, comicsalliance.com  "A great tale of haute couture and whimsy." —Danielle Crawford, fortheloveoffrock.com

Set it February of 1947, the great designer Dior is about to debut his new fashions. WWII is over, the boys are coming home and rationing will end and the dresses will celebrate. They are glorious creations showing tiny waists that marvelous sumptuous skirts drape from. I think this work is a wonderful format to tell the story of a visual art and teach history at the same time. All of this is seen though the eyes of a young fashion reporter, Clara Nohant. Her character will be familiar to this millenniums student as one of the commentators on today’s red carpets. In this story Clara becomes the Cinderella who is chosen to be a model of the “New Look.” Mixed in this delightful book is a look at the workers, movie stars, streets and buildings of a very special world. Even Dior’s famous dog Buddy makes an appearance. Recommended Grade 9 upSuzanne LayReviewer Linwood Press

This absolutely holds true when we consider this latest work by master cartoonist Annie Goetzinger. Graphic novels come in various forms, indeed. If you come in with certain expectations, you may end up missing out.Annie Goetzinger has quite a light touch to her drawings that manage to speak volumes. It is one thing to draw pretty women in chic settings and quite another to convey the humanity and complexity behind the story. Goetzinger’s graphic novel, “Girl in Dior,” does just that with her behind-the-scenes look at the life and work of legendary fashion designer Christian Dior. The House of Dior, at 30 Avenue Montaigne, was meant to evoke a cross between Louis XVI and the dawn of the 20th Century. It was to be made up of white paneling, pearl gray satin, taffeta lampshades, and discretely placed bouquets and kentia palms. It was not based upon anyone’s reality but upon Dior’s own childhood daydreams. It was to be the perfect place, the epicenter for high fashion, beginning with the first Dior fashion show for the Spring-Summer collection for 1947.Amid the refined mayhem that ensues, we meet our main character, Clara Nohant, a budding fashion columnist. It is through the fictional Clara that we can savor certain key moments and get a sense of the world of Dior. As only a graphic novel can offer, we can get very specific upon what you view and linger upon. In the right hands, this results in such a masterpiece as this. Goetzinger is a master cartoonist. She well knows that she cannot show you every last detail. Instead, she must pick and choose. She spends a good portion of time simply reveling in that special moment that was the launch of the House of Dior. After all, it sent shockwaves throughout the fashion world and led women, around the world, to consider lowering their hemlines. Having given the reader a solid grounding on that event, she quickens the pace. Clara goes from one major blunder to landing herself the role as the latest model to join the Dior inner circle. This book is a delight to read through and through. Some books you keep, and this one is a keeper. The art is stunning in how it works within the confines of elegant refinement. Goetzinger’s background in fashion illustration serves her well as she effortlessly captures the flow of fabric and the carriage and grace of the models. And her stylish line is complimented by her gorgeous use of watercolor. In her hands, the fashion world, while always cool and detached, never goes cold. In the end, there’s a warm human touch to this tale of high fashion.Yes, this book is a sheer delight and will appeal to any age.

I'm especially in love with his little daytime dresses with jackets By Nicola Mansfield I don't know anything about Dior except that his dresses are gorgeous; I'm especially in love with his little daytime dresses with jackets. This made all the information in this graphic about the beginning of Dior's breakout collection through the eyes of a new model very new to me and I didn't realize the model was a fictional character until the end of the book which does make the story a little confusing. However, the inside look at the fashion industry after WWII and the early 50s is amazingly eye-opening and so very different from today and yet in regards to the false feminine perception of perfection disturbingly the same. I really enjoyed the look inside this world during this era and would say the book is mostly about the industry and Dior's dresses and influence than about the man himself. However, the book's pièce de résistance is the breathtaking artwork. An entirely beautiful book which captures the pure brilliant beauty of the dresses and designs in a unique way. The book will be appreciated by all, but somehow I think I missed out a bit by not knowing the subject matter better beforehand. Knowledgable Christian Dior enthusiasts will come away the most inspired from this gorgeous book worthy of adding to any collection.

It is full of spelling and grammar mistakes and appears to have been thrown together for a quick buck. There are many simplistic tips which are unhelpful ("don't eat too many fatty foods," "be curious--always," "exercise," etc.). The concentration exercises included were very familiar to some I read online, but were not credited. At best, I got one or two minor points out of the book. A better book on the subject is called The Poverty of Attention by Ken Fite.

So this book is not only a good read but its a money maker in that it will help you to keep your focus and mind on the things. If you are in a high pressure job situation, you need to get this book to enhance your performance. The steps this book takes you through will be easy for anyone to do and benefit from.

By DMG Whenever people lose focus at work or school, they tend to scatter their energy and create more problems than solve them. As I recall, this book gave an advice that presence of mind is important. Gain more focus on your daily tasks with the help of this book and see that you hold control even tough situations.

End of the Trail For a Classic Western Hero By Tim Field I can't say I've loved the New 52 version of Jonah Hex - too much time in Gotham City fighting arcane creatures and Jonah Hex acting like a superhero. The trip to the future was interesting, but Hex's return to the past (and his return to form) in this volume made for enjoyable reading. I especially enjoyed the Darwyn Cooke illustrated final story with its satisfying twist ending. I don't know if we'll see Jonah Hex published again, but if not, this wrap up of his adventures will serve as a fine cherry on the sundae.

The Best of the "New 52" By Zac Hanscom All Star Western, Vol. 6: End of the Trail not only ends the “New 52” series, but around 100 All Star Western issues written by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti, sadly enough. Jonah Hex, his face reconstructed in the 21st century, returns to the 19th century with his 21st-century girlfriend, Gina. She's not very interesting, and she leaves the series, soon to be replaced by Hex's 19th-century girlfriend, Tallulah Black. Having been gone for a year, Hex discovers that an imposter Jonah Hex has been killing people in his name. This won't do, of course.I've only been reading this series since its “New 52” reboot, but I have been a terrific fan of the series. I liked the pairing of Hex with Amadeus Arkham earlier in the series, as Arkham played an excellent fool. Hex is evil in his own way, stupid in his own way, good in his own way, and brilliant in his own way. Arkham (and later Booster Gold) really brought out the good and brilliant side of Hex, and Tallulah Black actually becomes surprised at the compassion the newly-returned Hex shows. I ache at the loss of this title. *****
