New! Improved! Updated! Shorter and less expensive! -- Yes, William J. Brown's ""American Colossus: the Grain Elevator 1843 to 1942"" has been republished, and it is even better than before. Originally published in 2009, ""American Colossus"" is still the only book-length history of the invention, development and widespread adoption of the steam-powered grain elevator, which was invented in Buffalo, New York, in 1843 by Joseph Dart and Robert Dunbar. Over the course of the next 50 years, Buffalo-style grain elevators were built all over the Great Lakes region and, eventually, all over the world. ""American Colossus"" pays careful attention to the role played by the Erie Canal and to such technical matters as fireproofing measures and materials-handling techniques. The heart and soul of the book are the chapters devoted to the depictions and interpretations of Buffalo's elevators by the local press in the 19th C and such European modern architects as Gropius, Mendelssohn and Le Corbusier in the 20th.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. excellent book By Kava "Though it focuses upon Buffalo, the city in which the grain elevator was invented and perfected, Brown's history also examines the beginnings of the grain trade in several other key cities, including Minneapolis, Montreal, New York, Chicago and New Orleans. There are even discussions of grain elevators built in Argentina, France, Germany, Iraq and the Soviet Union. When necessary, Brown has translated documents from the original French, which allows us better access to information about grain elevators built in Montreal, and he has double-checked existing translations from the original German, which helps us re-evaluate the fantastic claims made about American getreidespeicher by European modernist architects in the 1910s and 1920s (many of these architects were German). Brown's scope and methodology perfectly suits a trade in which the local, national and international levels are closely linked."from the preface byMarshall BrownUrban Designer and ArchitectAssistant Professor, Illinois Institute of Technology"Art historians, cultural critics, and others have long disagreed about the advent of the intertwined phenomena known as 'modernity' and 'modernism.' Some have dated their beginnings in Zurich and Berlin in the 20th century; others have claimed an even earlier appearance, pointing to Paris in the 1860s. William Brown's book about grain elevators makes the highly original claim that the essential aspects of modern society were already present in America in the 1840s. Replacing the skyscrapers of Chicago and New York City with the towering grain elevators of Buffalo and Minneapolis, Brown re-tells the history of the modern city in a fresh and interesting way."Throughout this remarkable book, I am reminded of Walter Benjamin's 'Arcades Project,' which was a massive and unfinished work about Paris in the first decades of the 19th century. Like Benjamin, from whom he draws for both insights and citations of other writers, Brown calls upon a wide range of sources: the Bible, Sigmund Freud, Martin Heidegger, Karl Marx, Lewis Mumford, Charles Demuth, Frederick Jackson Turner, Charles Baudelaire, William Shakespeare, Anthony Trollope, Ken Kesey, Jacques Derrida, Francisco de Goya, Walter Gropius, and even Star Trek. The result is a brilliant cultural study of grain elevators, and a very rewarding read."Dr. Kimberly A. PaiceAssistant Professor, Art History, University of Cincinnati

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Informative, but ... By Red J. Comb William J. Brown is a guy who loves grain elelvators and knows a lot about them. I am a guy who loves grain elevators and knows very little about them. So I was glad to see "the first in-depth history of the invention and widespread use of the American grain elevator." And the book is indeed informative, well-researched and liberally documented. I liked his position that the world grain trade is as influential, if not more so, than the oil industry, on world economy and finance, yet seems to get a free pass on its economic domination. The problem I have is with the author's casual, convesational writing sytle, which becaomes intrusive after awhile. His frequent use of italics to emphasize certain words without explaining their significance becomes almost an affectation, and his statement that "A local kid who was climbing around" in a grain elevator fell to his death reminded me of the time in high school when I had points taken off a paper I had written for using slang, when I used "kid" for "child." And I lost count of all the sentences that began "In point of fact ..." He also uses ellipes for dramatic effect which doens't quite come off, as when he speculates as to whether elevators were still used "to ... ah ... elevate" the grain. But the main problem of the book is that the last 100 pages or so consist of almost unrelieved snark. The author seems to have an ax to grind against every previous author of a grain elevator book. Reyner Banham, author of A Concrete Atlantis, the book that more or less launched grain elevator scholarship, comes in for particular scorn. I should point out that that it's been some years since I read the book ,and my familiarity with is flawed. I don't doubt that his quotes from Banham are authentic, and I can't speak to the accuracy of fatual statements, but it seems unnecessary to say "Banham is an embarrassment, even an outrage. A Concrete Atlantis is full of mistakes and, because of that, an intolerable arrogance." To he his credit, he gives Banham his due when he feels it is merited, but his belittling of Banham's first person description of a trip to the Buffalo elevator district seems especially mean-spirited; "Banham wants us to bleieve that "he" (quotes substituted for italics) wasn't scared or depressed; no, "he" was positivley exhilarated!" Eventually, I felt that I was reading a particularly nasty high schooler's Facebook post trashing a classmate, and was literally embarrassed about continuing to read it. His treatment of photographers Bernd and Hilla Becher, internationally renowned for their studies of various structures, is similar. The Bechers are known for their deadpan style; the structure speaks entirely for itself. There are no fancy angles or atmospheric lightings, and little text. The structure as is merely identified as to location. The author is either unaware of this or doesn't care. He exclaims "Where in blazes is Peotone, Illinois?" (entire sentence italicized) "Where is it in relation to the many other places in Illinois that the Bechers photographed grain elevators?" Lisa Mahar-Keplinger and Frank Gohlke catch less venom, but they are not exactly treated kindly either. The author should realize that, if he is to be credited with the first historical study of grain elevators, he should concede that most of the other books are primarily aesthetic studies, for better or worse. He even takes to task a graffito, "Frankenstein Lives Here!" a Tonawanda elevator, dissecting it and noting that "if Frankenstein lives "here" (italics again) in this particular grain elevator, then "you" the reader of the graffito) should leave without dwelling any further." He even gets racial; "unlike the white 'urban explorers' who dwelled upon the Wollenberg and were fully aware of its significance, the black people from 'that side of the tracks' actually dwelled "in" (italics again)it, but did not know or even care what the building was or what it meant. Unlike the former, who are careful with fire, the latter seem to burn down "everything" (italics his), even their own homes." In short, informative as this book is about a suject dear to my heart, it just has too mant problems for me to like it.

Adam4d.com is a curiously Christian webcomic written and illustrated by Adam Ford AKA Adam4d. That’s me so I’ll stop talking in the third-person now. This is the first collection of Adam4d.com content in book form. In it you will find a compilation of some of the most-popular comics from the website thus far, each one revised, polished, and upgraded so as to not be identical to the version published online. You will also find some brand-new material. You will not find any traditional-publishing formalities, nauseating self-promotion, or endorsements from famous people. I hope you enjoy it.

37 of 39 people found the following review helpful. Like The Oatmeal, but for Theology Nerds! By ashertopia Like The Oatmeal, but for Theology Nerds. In his first collection of comics from his website, Adam4d chose an eclectic collection of his work. Some of it is clearly earlier – the art is less detailed, and tends to be more issue based – while some looks and works like some of his more recent work – having more detailed characters acting out quotes from historical figures, pastors and authors or providing more in-depth commentary on Christian issues. While the art style varies, the theme is the same: modern Christianity is under the microscope. But it never comes across as intending to harm. Some use satire simply as an attack, while others make a point. (Think political cartoons). Adam4d’s work is primarily a way of teaching. Even those who may feel attacked have to admit that it wasn’t the artist who did the attacking; it is the Word, quoted faithfully in context, or quotes from theological and intellectual greats from history that convicts. If there was a letdown it was in how short the book was. I understand that with full color it would have to be shorter to be affordable, but, like many fans of his webcomic, I have my favorites that I’d have liked to see included. Some of his newer stuff is really top notch as well. But that’s what the second collection if for, right? With religious work there can be – rightly so – concerns about orthodox views. Nothing I’ve read so far would not be considered orthodox. While I don’t know the author, his work strikes me as tending to Reformed, if any single set of doctrinal beliefs, without any controversial or secondary issues to cause readers of different backgrounds to stumble. If you are an orthodox Christian you will find a lot to agree with here. Beware, though, should you hold to unorthodox beliefs as they will come under the scrutiny of the Word.I haven’t had as much fun reading about theologians, laughing at (and being rebuked for) so-called Christian behavior, or learning complex theological arguments in clear, deep ways since I read Jon Acuff’s Stuff Christians Like a few years back. Hilarious, poignant, needed. This webcomic and book are part satire, part teaching, and part rebuke and 100% required reading.I highly recommend it! .This book was provided by the publisher as a review copy.

Pros:✅ Entertaining.✅ Holy.✅ Humorous.✅ Irreverent.✅ Profound.Cons: My coffee table has what appears to be a coffee stain that has grown overnight. Strangely enough it's the precise size of this book. I have determined that while my coffee table is ruined, God in His providence has ordained this book to forever remain front and center in my living room, covering said stain. I believe this will be a sermon illustration someday.5/5 stars. Well written by an awesome guy.

By Daevad Tajkowski The only negative about this volume is that it is, sadly, the next-to-last volume of the tale of Keiichi and Beldandy. Volume 48 will be the end. As always, the artwork is extraordinary and the storytelling is unique and inventive.

Excellent book on a previously taboo subject.I like the boldness of the author to come out and bring this subject into book form. The book was good in that it covered do"s and don"t"s on this topic.Often we don"t want to talk about this subject but it is through a book like this that communication can improve. It was funny seeing some of the description in this book because usually language and slang like this is not recorded. The author definitely has a passion for helping couples and that is commendable.I recommend this book for all couples who are wanting to enhance their relationship.

Some you may not agree with – I’m not a fan of total honesty – but there are many invaluable suggestions. It also provided the knowledge on key points of foreplay acts that will make your toes curve. The book is worth buying. For people who are open minded and willing to learn the act of dirty talk to help your sex life.

Spice it up with creative, outright suggestive dirty talk and rejuvenate your sex life. Not 50-shades of gray, but it doesn't have to be. The power of suggestive language is as much a mind game as it is physical. Interesting book - I thought the scavenger hunt particularly fun. Good stuff - take the boredom out of the bedroom with some dirty talk.

Yumiko was born in Japan but has made a life in London, losing herself in its cosmopolitan bustle. She has a gallery show of her art, a good job, and a good guy she plans to marry. The culture she grew up in seems very far away—until her brother phones with the news that their father has died. Yumiko returns to Tokyo and finds herself immersed in the rituals of death while also plunged into the rituals of life—fish bars, bullet trains, pagodas—as she confronts the question of where her future really lies. Just So Happens deals both gently and powerfully with grief, identity, and the pressure not to disappoint one’s parents, even after they’re gone, in a look at the relationships that build the foundation of our lives.

Just So Happens, by Fumio Obata

Review “It’s a thoughtful story about grief, outsiders, and moving beyond family expectations.” (BarnesandNoble.com)“Just So Happens is a thoughtful, subtle and smart graphic novel. It presents one of those quiet stories that sticks in your mind with its charming spirit and depth.” (Comics Bulletin)“Delicate lines and vivid watercolors create bold and flowing scenes, as well as a slow, ethereal Japanese summer.” (Publishers Weekly)“An intimate and thoughtful story that highlights the struggles Asian immigrants face in assimilating to Western cultures.” (Shelf Awareness)“Obata’s book is refreshingly understated; his sparse dialogue leaves lots of room for his expressive, water-colored imagery, which can appear cartoony or super-detailed or dreamlike, depending on the storytelling needs.” (Slate)“The strength of some graphic novels, as with the prose kind, is the power to make you think. Such is the case with Just So Happens by writer/artist Fumio Obata.” (Minneapolis Star Tribune)

About the Author Fumio Obata was born in Tokyo and moved to England in 1991. He studied illustration at the Glasgow School of Art and received his master’s from the Royal College of Art in London. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful Art, unfinished story By Dhandforth The author does a good job capturing the art and stillness of a Noh performance -- the undercurrent of this book. But the plot leaves the reader with too many unresolved relationship puzzles: what us Yumiko's relationship with her Dad? What her brother's with her mother? What was her Dad's relationship with everybody? After the conversation with her Mother, her actions seemed to pre-programmed.At one level, the book is just the description of one long ritual. The return to Japan, the funeral, the obligatory self reflection, and visit to her mother. Like a Noh drama, but without enough context to interpret all of the underlying emotions.

I highly recommend it for anyone who likes good literature or good art. Themes of identity, grief and culture run through the book, but it's never heavy handed. "The months after Gettysburg had hardly been quiet―filled with skirmishes, cavalry clashes, and plenty of marching. Nonetheless, Union commander Maj. Gen. George Gordon Meade had yet to come to serious blows with his Confederate counterpart, Gen. Robert E. Lee.“Lee is undoubtedly bullying you,” one of Meade’s superiors goaded.Lee’s army―severely bloodied at Gettysburg―did not have quite the offensive capability it once possessed, yet Lee’s aggressive nature could not be quelled. He looked for the chance to strike out at Meade. In mid-October, 1863, both men shifted their armies into motion. Each surprised the other. Quickly, Meade found himself racing northward for safety along the Orange & Alexandria Railroad, with Lee charging up the rail line behind him.Last stop: Bristoe Station.Authors Robert Orrison and Bill Backus have worked at the Bristoe Station battlefield, which is now surrounded by one of the fastest-growing parts of Virginia. In A Want of Vigilance, they trace the campaign from the armies’ camps around Orange and Culpeper northwest through the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and along the vital railroad―to Centreville and back―in a back-and-forth game of cat and mouse: the “goggle-eyed snapping turtle” versus “the old gray fox” pitted against each other in one of the most overlooked periods of the war."

Nice telling of the story of the battle at Bristoe Station By Steven Peterson This is a nice job or describing the battle at Bristoe Nation, when the Union forces bloodied the Army of Northern Virginia's nose. It was not a major battle, but it hinted at problems with the Confederate forces, such as A. P. Hill's leadership, the ability of the southern forces to successfully mount an offensive, George Meade's ability to handle the Army of the Potomac, and so on.Robert E. Lee and his army had outfoxed Meade and forced his retreat by threatening his flank and rear. The voices of Washington (such as Abraham Lincoln and Edwin Stanton) had become somewhat disillusioned with Meade after his non-aggressive movements against Lee after the battle at Gettysburg. They thought they saw more of the same as Meade was outmaneuvred. As Meade's army retreated, Hill's corps aggressively pursued. His forces caught up with Gouverneur Warren's II Corps (Warren was standing in for Winfield Scott Hancock, who had been wounded at Gettysburg) at Bristoe Station. Although he would soon be outnumbered, Warren used the railroad as a natural defensive position and fired on Hill's troops. The Confederates charged, but the defensive position of the northern forces was too strong--and they had artillery backing as well. After a relatively short period of time, the southern forces backed off. Lee was distressed at the heavy casualties and Hill's lax leadership.A nicer description of the battle. As with all in this series, there is also a discussion of the battlefield today and suggestions as to how to tour the site to see key sites. Finally, these volumes have a number of appendices that flesh out the text\'s coverage. Satisfying coverage of a sharp little battle just after Gettysburg. . . .

A Bristoe Station Introduction By Matthew Bartlett Most Civil War readers have little knowledge on the Bristoe Station Campaign, but recent works have surrounded themselves with this fight. There has been a new atlas about the campaign and some new books as well, but overall, there is no book which serves as a great introduction to the campaign. This is where The Emerging Civil War Series shines. One of the new works in this series is A Want of Vigilance which details the Bristoe Station Campaign and the people surrounding the events. The finished product is not only an incredible introduction, but is also a great work for future research which I have come to expect from The Emerging Civil War Series. Bill Backus is a native of Connecticut and graduated from the University of Mary Washington with a Bachelor’s degree in Historical Preservation. Bill is working as a historian for a number of Civil War sites in Northern Virginia and has worked for the National Park Service at Vicksburg National Military Park along with the Petersburg National Battlefield. Robert Orrison has been a historian for more than twenty years and received his Master’s degree in Public History from George Mason University. He oversees the day-to-day operations of a large municipal historic site program in Northern Virginia. He serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Bull Run Civil War Roundtable and the Mosby Heritage Area Association along with other organizations. The first thing I would like to say about this book is that it easily breaks up the campaign. For someone who does not know a lot about Bristoe Station, this breaking up of battles helps create a better understanding as to what happened. I discovered that most people do not know as much about this campaign as other campaigns which happened in the year of 1863, but it was incredibly important nonetheless. There are also appedicies that deal with more detailed aspects of the battle such as cavalry actions of the 1st Maine, the Fall of 1863, and a more in depth look at the Battles of Rappahannock Station and Kelly’s Ford. In the chapters dealing with the battles, the narrative of the battle is aided by not only wonderful maps, but also drawings from the time and pictures of the field. One of the most fascinating things about this book was that it looked at the campaign not only as a standalone campaign, but also as the campaign after Gettysburg. The people involved are all familiar characters to most readers of the Civil War but their situations in this narrative are new to some. Bill Backus and Robert Orrison have done a great service to the world of Civil War academia by writing this work, A Want of Vigilance, on the Bristoe Station campaign. While most people ignore the campaign due to the actions of the army earlier in the year of 1863, these two historians have created one of the best introductory works on the Bristoe Station Campaign. I highly recommend this addition to The Emerging Civil War Series.Matthew Bartlett - Gettysburg Chronicle

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. But with this pleasant relationship as good friends highlighted By Clark B. Hall When our cousins, the Brits, wish to officially acknowledge a potential conflict, or interest in the topic-at-hand, they"give notice." And consistent with this worthy ethical disclosure, I'll herein give notice this reviewer has known Rob Orrison for well more than half his life. But with this pleasant relationship as good friends highlighted, I will proceed to favorably review the wonderful scholarship Rob and Mr. Bill Backus have revealed to us in their wonderful book.In giving tours over the past couple of decades that detail, among other subjects, "The Civil War in Culpeper County, VA," I will invariably receive quizzical looks (and questions) when discussing the opening of the Bristoe Station Campaign. It would appear that the Confederate defeat at Gettysburg, and the subsequent retreat back to Virginia's Piedmont, has so abundantly soaked into the public psyche that many are not aware matters of extraordinary military import actually took place between July 1863 and early May 1864. "A Want of Vigilance" (Savas Beatie, 2015), addresses this unfortunate dearth of scholarship in truly admirable fashion. As both armies jockeyed for position (and power) in the fall of 1863, General Lee--never a small bore strategist- advanced his yet-eager command back north into Culpeper from Orange County. Correspondingly, General Meade--aware his army stood flat-footed with their backs to the Rappahannock--abruptly withdrew north along the line of the Orange & Alexandria toward the friendly defensive heights of Centerville. This enormous, mad-cap race between two entire armies was now on, in earnest, and who would win it, and who would lose? I am pleased to assert this marvelous study conveys the specific answer in terrific detail, and Hal Jespersen's superb maps point the way. (As a Jeb Stuart fancier, I especially admire the "Battle of Auburn" discussion, and fine map.)The sad battle of Bristoe Station is then detailed, accompanied by Hal's excellent maps, and post-battle descriptions of other campaign-related actions and events further help to properly and effectively situate the overall Bristoe Station Campaign within its proper historical context. So, after looking over the above overview, readers will not be surprised that this reviewer highly recommends, "A want of Vigilance."

This review will focus on this edition. This is a collection of the 3 digest sized trade paperbacks, 11, 12, and 13. I own most of the Usagi Yojimbo digest sized TP so i wasn't expecting much when i ordered this. I figured it would be the same smaller digest as the others. I was wrong, It's the same size as a normal comic book. It makes a noticeable difference.Over the years some of the Usagi stories have been published in color. For cost reasons the digest sized books made the color issues in black and white. This book has the color stories in their original format. It also has all of the covers in color at the back of the book.I can't recommend this edition enough even if you own the digest sized trades. I wasn't going to order Saga volume 1 because i already own the individual books but these are such an improvement that i went ahead and picked it up.

These are amazing stores, some of the best comic stories I have ever read. Nothing else makes me feel as happy as Usagi does. This is a beautiful hardcover book. I tend to only buy collections in hardcover so the spine does not crease upon multiple readings. This book looks like it will stand the test of time. Mine came shrink wrapped and in perfect mint condition. Just like all of the hardcovers in the Usagi Saga collection, it comes signed by Stan Sakai.....an awesome bonus!

I started with volume two because I already own the trade paperbacks collecting the same stories from volume one. For less than the price of two trades, these Saga volumes collect three trades worth of material (670 pages in this one!). Great comics in a great, affordable collection. My only very slight quibble: I wish the covers were printed throughout the book and not all in the back in a separate gallery.

Rivapalacio It honestly took a minute to figure out what was going on with this thing. The cover says "Tap the Hulk to start the action" and I expected a recorded Hulk roar or something. Instead of lights or sounds the book asks your child to help assemble the Avengers. Your child does this by tapping images on the book, blowing on pages or just clapping. As silly as it may sound, our son, nearly 2, LOVES it. We've had the book less than a week and I'm already thinking of picking up a backup copy.

The therapist pulled it out to help my son during his session and he loved all the interaction and involvement, which led him to willing try and communicate! I'm buying it right now to continue working with him and my other son here at home. It's a great book. Totally recommend it!

The action boils right up until the final moment, and catches up with 'The Looking Glass Wars' perfectly. I wasn't a huge fan of comics until this series! and the artwork is killer. Great read.

A gem of a bedtime story By excellentwheels Erik the elk is a lovable little character end of the story and style of book is very reminiscent of the bedtime stories that were read to me when I was younger. It teaches children the valuable lessons such as the fact that you cannot judge a person based on the way they look or your own personal bias and fears not to mention that telling lies never leads to anything good. The story was an absolute joy to read and do 28 pages it is not an unreasonable length for a bedtime story. The words and vocabulary are easy for young readers to understand and build a vocabulary and reading skills. They characters and artwork for this story are perfect as they keep the young readers and/or listeners focused on the book and put smiles on their faces and with each turn of the page. They can't wait to see what is going to happen to their friend Erik the elk. Not to mention that the young readers or listeners will learn about the morality of truth and the negative effects of prejudice. All in all, I am very pleased with my purchase of this book my nephews absolutely love Erik the elk and they cannot wait for another story about Erik and his adventures in the town of antler shed on the edge of sweet grass Lake. If you were a fan of the Bernstein Bears, then you will be a fan of Erik the elk, and his friends.

Strikingly similar to the successful Berenstain bears, something I read as a child, this book teaches about life lessons, in a way to be pleasing to read. Excellent collection to start developing.
