The definitive account of the final and bloodiest battle for Pork Chop Hill By the summer of 1953, the Korean War had long since reached a stalemate. As peace negotiations dragged on, units of the US 7th Infantry Division rebuilt the defenses of Hill 255, one of numerous outposts in front of the Main Line of Resistance extending across the peninsula. Better known by its nickname, Pork Chop Hill, the outpost had twice been the scene of some of the fiercest fighting of the spring. Now, the soldiers tasked with its rebuilding and defense hoped they would not be the last men to die in what had already become known as “the Forgotten War.”   On the night of July 6th, under the cover of a heavy monsoon rainstorm, forces of the Chinese 23rd Army attacked. For five hellish days, the opposing forces engaged in devastating artillery assaults, brutal hand-to-hand fighting, and round-the-clock attacks and counterattacks. Less than three weeks after the smoke on Pork Chop Hill cleared, the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed.  On Hallowed Ground is the riveting story of this epic battle. Drawing on previously classified documents, interviews, and letters from survivors, author Bill McWilliams details the strategy and tactics behind the conflict and pays stirring tribute to the heroic soldiers and medics who were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to hold “the Chop.”

On Hallowed Ground: The Last Battle for Pork Chop Hill, by Bill McWilliams

Review “A celebration of all that is good and right about America’s citizen and professional soldiers, from whom our nation and the protracted, stalemated war in Korea routinely demanded unprecedented sacrifice.” —Lt. Gen. Harold G. Moore Jr., USA (Ret.), coauthor of We Were Soldiers Once . . . and Young   “Compelling . . . On Hallowed Ground will appeal to readers interested not only in the Korean War, but also military psychology, the nature of ground combat, relationships between officers and soldiers, and the U.S. soldier at war.” —The Journal of Military History   “The Korean War was the war nobody in America really wanted to fight. The bloody battle for a barren piece of terrain the GIs dubbed Pork Chop Hill came near the end of it, when no one wanted to be the last man to die in the ‘police action.’ It fell to the brave men of the Army’s 7th Division to fight, suffer, and die on those slopes. Bill McWilliams tells their story in vivid, stark detail and does them the honor they deserve.” —Joseph Galloway, coauthor of We Were Soldiers Once . . . and Young   “An extraordinarily powerful, true story and a fresh Korean War history. Drawing on official records, letters, and written and oral recollections, it places readers in the middle of wrenching crosscurrents of emotion as American soldiers fight one of the last crucial battles of a stalemated war.” —Gen. Gordon R. Sullivan, USA (Ret.), president of the Association of the US Army and former US Army chief of staff (1991–95)   “Bill McWilliams’s stirring story will ensure that these brave soldiers of the Forgotten War will not be forgotten by the soldiers of today’s generation.” —Gen. Carl E. Vuono, USA (Ret.), former US Army chief of staff (1987–91) “Bill McWilliams brilliantly reveals the extraordinary courage of those who fought the final, bitter, bloody, costly days of the Korean War while capturing important lessons about war, national and military policies, and the effects of those policies on battlefield decisions. Those lessons of a half century ago are just as applicable today.” —Gen. Jack I. Gregory, USAF (Ret.), former chief of staff, Combined Forces Command, Korea (1985–86) and commander-in-chief, Pacific Air Forces (1986–88)

About the Author Bill McWilliams, a 1955 graduate of West Point and an Air Force officer, flew 128 combat missions in Vietnam. The Must-Have Book of the Korean War By Colin Burgess As an Australian military historian myself, I have written numerous books on the Australian military experience overseas, principally in the two world wars. Quite frankly, however, I admit I knew lamentably little about the Korean War, the so-called "forgotten war". In fact, I think it's true to say that most people's knowledge of that war these days would only have derived from watching episodes of MASH. That lack of knowledge for me, at least, changed forever after a friend relentlessly urged me to read Bill McWilliams' superb account of the battle for Pork Chop Hill in 1953. If anything, I found it to be even more evocative and powerful than James Bradley's wonderful "Flags Of Our Fathers" for the descriptions of the battles, and the compelling stories of the ordinary but extraordinarily gallant leaders and men who fought, died or survived in one of the bloodiest, most ferocious engagements of any war. You cannot read past the stories of such combatants and medics as Bob Northcutt, James McKenzie and Dick Shea without giving thanks for their astonishing valour and determination, and yet the book is filled with such stories, told at length or in a few simple but effective sentences. At first glance the book's earlier pages may seem a little overladen with background detail, but once you begin to read you realise that the author has done a superb and meticulously thorough job of research, and does not lead us into any situation without first fully presenting the preceding events, the units assigned, and those individuals particularly involved. It is a masterful blend, as McWilliams first informs us, then sets the scene, and finally takes us through the different battles and aftermath using the stark, sometimes horrifying, often poignant recollections and accounts of a host of participants and/or witnesses. There is a welcome abundance of excellent photographs and maps to show where the engagements took place, and many of the soldiers and leaders who took part. Family members also reflect back over half a century to the deeds and heroism of their loved ones, which adds yet another dimension to this engrossing book. The story of the 7th Infantry, and in particular the different battalions of the 17th and 32nd Regiments, is one that has been told before, but never with such descriptive detail, real-life drama, and compassion. This is certainly a book to be treasured, and read many times. Thank you, Bill McWilliams, for giving us this truly fascinating, truly compelling book.

However, in truth, the war of maneuver that made up the first year of the war has been the subject of many excellent books. The stationary, or "outpost war," that was fought from 1951 to 1953 has received far less attention. Bill McWilliams' book, "On Hallowed Ground: The Last Battle for Pork Chop Hill," is a close study of one of the most brutal battles fought during that period.Pork Chop Hill may be familiar to some readers as the subject of SLA Marshall's book and the subsequent movie starring Gregory Peck. That book and movie deal with the April 1953 battle for the outpost on Pork Chop. McWilliams reviews that earlier battle as well as the overall strategic situation, but he focuses on the July 1953 battle in which regiments of the U.S. 7th Infantry Division fought against a Chinese enemy determined to seize Pork Chop. The author does a great job in describing this chaotic battle and the bravery of the soldiers in the rifle companies and their supporting elements that fought it. He examines in detail the decisions made at high levels of command that ultimately determined the outcome of the battle. And finally, in his section on the aftermath of Pork Chop, he puts it in the perspective of both history and the families of the fallen. This is a great addition to the literature of the Korean War. It should be of interest to both students of the Korean War and those readers with a general interest in military history and ground combat.

I Was There By Donald Haverstrom As I was the first platoon leader of I Company 32 Infantry who was wounded in this engagement I can attest to the author's excellent and honest recreation of the events of those terrible days in July of 1953. It really is difficult to understand the carnage that occurred on that insignificant little outpost in front of the MLR if one had not been there. But, the author not only did a fine job in explaining the political situation(Pork Chop had no strategic value- so why expend so many lives?), and the tactical situation as it evolved day by day, but he managed to tell what it was like for the individual infantryman to fight and try to survive under merciless shelling and masses of enemy soldiers whose leaders cared little about the cost to these men in their wave assaults. As a side bar- the second battle of Pork Chop Hill was the most intense artillery action in the history of modern warfare. Never in such a limited area were so many shells fired from as far back as the big guns at the Corps level down to the battalion mortars.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. hero took his time By RomReader Heroine gets the cover-model job for 1 of Hero's company, even though she wasn't looking for a job. Her reason for being at Hero's office was to secretly check out attractive & successful Hero for her royal friend's sake. Her friend found a letter that claims to Hero being the illegitimate son of former Maraban's ruler. Heroine's personal investigation becomes very personal quickly as she & Hero succumb to their instant attraction. But heroine thinks their 1 hot night leads to nowhere, given Hero's womanizing ways & that he failed to contact her after that night. And heroine knows that their relationship will change when Hero is told about his paternity & her part in it.Like other Kendrick books, this one is fast-paced & her writing pulls me into the story/romance. Sexual chemistry & love scenes are passionate. What I didn't like was the one-up, one-down relationship b/w hero & heroine. Hero too his sweet time (to call, to figure out his feelings, to define their relationship) & heroine willingly waited for him. It made hero seem not as emotionally involved as heroine was in their relationship & made heroine look like a doormat. I felt sorry for the heroine to be stuck with a guy, no matter how attractive or successful, who wasn't sure about her nor did he seem that into her. Even after he told her he loved her & she moved in with him, it still took her 1 year to finally propose marriage. It doesn't bode well for their future.Limited recommendation.

Ms Kendrick has done it this time! This story showcases her writing skills at its best. She takes the reader on an incredible journey of smoldering sensuality, adventure, intrigue, and breathtaking romance. Lara and Darien are rulers of foreplay. They are one of THE most realistic, yet dreamy couples of all romantic novels i've read thus far...seriously. I loved the way Ms kendrick built the tension emotionally, physically, and mentally within Lara and Darien in such a way that the reader FELT it, then selected the appropriate moments to release that tension over and over again. I cannot wait to read prince Kalimn's story, i bet he is just as passionate as Darien.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Desert Prince's Mistress by Sharon Kendrick By Amazon Customer The book the Desert Prince's Mistress was deeply disappointing. The heroine in the story discovers that the hero is really the prince of a small country. Rather than tell this man she has SEX with this man knowing who he was BEFORE telling him--all because "she couldn't help herself". The hero does not have the character the writer is trying to persuade us he has because he's attraction for the woman ebbs and flows depending on if she appears too eager...and she's eager. I didn't find the romance romantic and the reaction of his half brother seemed off. Three stars. The Desert Prince's Mistress (Harlequin Large Print)

He had a way of creating competition with the number of attempts so that everything I did added to the end results, and every aspect of the job had merit. Reading this reminded me of his expertise in this area, when I was young and couldn't see that he was spending more time training me than he would have spent just doing it himself. The principles in the book are timeless, and spot on, you won't do better for a quick refresher course or a simple introduction to productivity management.

In this fascinating book, Terry O'Connor explores a distinction that is deeply ingrained in much of the language that we use in zoology, human-animal studies, and archaeology - the difference between wild and domestic. For thousands of years, humans have categorized animals in simple terms, often according to the degree of control that we have over them, and have tended to see the long story of human-animal relations as one of increasing control and management for human benefit. And yet, around the world, species have adapted to our homes, our towns, and our artificial landscapes, finding ways to gain benefit from our activities and so becoming an important part of our everyday lives. These commensal animals remind us that other species are not passive elements in the world around us but intelligent and adaptable creatures. Animals as Neighborsshows how a blend of adaptation and opportunism has enabled many species to benefit from our often destructive footprint on the world. O'Connor investigates the history of this relationship, working back through archaeological records. By requiring us to take a multifaceted view of human-animal relations, commensal animals encourage a more nuanced understanding of those relations, both today and throughout the prehistory of our species.

If you don't like that kind of tone, read some other book. I personally love it.As in a particularly British genre of books (think for example of Danubia) an important aspect of the book is a multi-disciplinary ramble. Archeology and history inform his views, even philosophy. He looks at rats and mice, cats, dogs, foxes, birds, squirrels, corvids (that is, crows and their kind), pigeons. He looks at animals in our houses (not always pets!), on our houses and around our houses. He argues for more tolerance of animals around us (meaning those not yet pets). As we humans expand urban and built environments, commensals will continue to adapt. Animals choose us, he says, as much as we choose them. His hunch is that animals choosing us goes way back in our history. He argues that some commensals provide therapeutic value (he does not just mean pets, but animals choosing to live near us). To an extent this means animals adapting to built environments as a new ecological niche (he does not discuss this in a formal sense). He considers biophilia at some length, not really agreeing or disagreeing with the point, but exploring it.One difficulty for me was dense, not so easy to read font. The book is not an academic tome in style, although it is well researched. I found this a good read and have it on my docket for a reread in the next year or two. This book will not be to every reader's taste, so preview it somehow before you buy it.

Excellent intro to anthrozoology By Lindsay A detailed survey of our human history (and prehistory) with animals who share our immediate environmentFirst off, a small warning. This book is an academic text and therefore some background in biology and/or anthropology is probably necessary to understand the concepts discussed as it is not written in layman's terms.I loved this book. It is a good introduction into the field of anthrozoology. The author's discussions were extremely nuanced, never being able to reach firm conclusions due to the lack of research, historical records, or anthropological data. He points out many errors in logic that other (non-anthrozoologist) authors have made when talking about human's association with animals. For instance, he emphasizes many times that we can only make conclusions based at the POPULATION level and not at the SPECIES level. The same species may be a companion animal in one environment and culture, a commensal pest in another environment/culture, and a non-commensal, "wild" animal in a third. In relation, he also points out that commensalism is cultural - dependent on both human culture AND animal culture. Because one species is able to modify it's behavior not just across time but also circumstance, animals too have adopted and adapted to us.I greatly appreciated the discussion of cats too, as many researchers question whether they are true domesticates (or are more of commensal animals). The narrator was excellent. It is hard to make an academic text sound not boring, but Andrea Emmes did a wonderful job, never sounding monotone or flat. I would definitely listen to anything else she narrates. This book was fascinating and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about humans' interactions with animals.

As an animal lover of both domesticated and commensal animals, I found this audiobook to be super informative. While living with many types of wild animals nearby and even making sure they have food in the cold months, I never knew they were not really 'wild' in that sense. They're animals that have come to depend on us as humans as they live in close proximity, while partially depending on us for food as well as shelter. I honestly never considered the term 'commensal' before now and even looked it up.From cats and dogs who have become domesticated throughout history to other animals such as raccoons, rats, mice, squirrels, and birds, this is an extremely good presentation of tracing the origin of the cat and dog to explaining our relationship with the other animals as well. Mesocarnivore was also something I looked up although this audiobook explains it clearly. These would be foxes, coyotes, and skunks along with other animals who depend on humans as well. This was a very informative book.Overall, this audiobook was an interesting listen while providing great insight into our commensal co-habitators. I would highly recommend giving it a listen.Andrea Emmes has continued to be a great narrator and has proven her versatility time and again. She did a wonderful job with this audiobook and I look forward to more great work from her in the future.

The Middle Kingdom (ca. 2030–1700 B.C.), the second great era of ancient Egyptian culture, was a transformational period during which the artistic conventions, cultural principles, religious beliefs, and political systems formed during earlier dynasties were developed and reimagined. This comprehensive volume presents a detailed picture of the art and culture of the Middle Kingdom, arguably the least known of Egypt’s three kingdoms yet a time of remarkable prosperity and unprecedented change. International specialists present new insights into how Middle Kingdom artists refined existing forms and iconography to make strikingly original architecture, statuary, tomb and temple relief decoration, and stele.      Thematic sections explore art produced for different strata of Egyptian society, including the pharaoh, royal women, the elite, and the family, while other chapters provide insight into Egypt’s expanding relations with foreign lands and the themes of Middle Kingdom literature. More than 250 objects from major collections around the world are sumptuously illustrated, many with new photography undertaken specifically for this catalogue. This fascinating publication is a much-needed contribution to understanding ancient Egypt’s art and culture, and shows how the Middle Kingdom served as the bridge between the monumentality of the previous centuries and the opulent splendor of later years.

Articles were very well written and the photographs were superb.Excellent addition to the library of anyone interested in Egyptian art and history.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Homerun By qalmaq As others have pointed out, this is a splendid volume written to accompany a magnificent exhibit. For various reasons, the Middle Kingdom, while recognized as significant, seems, at times, to be an extended footnote in many volumes on Egyptian history. Ancient Egypt Transformed makes a major course adjustment. Wonderfully illustrated with chapters written by the experts, it is up-to-date, even surprising. This volume has set a standard that will be difficult to top for some time to come. But for those interested in Egypt and the period, let's hope it challenges others to produce more, excellent work.

2 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Resource By JLee This is a very beautiful book with excellent articles. It is, in part, the catalog of the like-named exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum, but it also contains many related articles. There is a catalogue section, showing and discussing the items in the exhibit, as well as sections before and after that discussing aspects of the Middle Kingdom; those sections are profusely illustrated with photos of the catalogue items as well as other relevant illustrations. It is very rare to have an exhibit centering on the Middle Kingdom, and, to most people, the Middle Kingdom is surely the least-known of the major divisions of Egyptian history. This exhibit, therefore, is most welcome and this book will remain a major resource for future study.I’ve made a list of the articles, and I will apologize in advance for any typos or omissions. The first part of the book contains introductory materials (maps and such), and one chapter:Introduction: What Was the Middle Kingdom?, by Adela Oppenheim. The next section, Aspects of Middle Kingdom Art, contains the following:Architecture: Building for Eternity across Egypt, by Dieter Arnold.Statues in Their Settings: Encountering the Divine, by Dorothea Arnold.Artists and Workshops: The Complexity of Creation, by Adela Oppenheim. The Decoration of Elite Tombs: Connecting the Living and the Dead, by Janice Kamrin. The Art of the Stela: An Appeal to the Living, by Kei Yamamoto.Next is the actual catalogue of the exhibit, divided into the following chapters:A New Start from the South: Thebes during the Eleventh Dynasty, by Dieter Arnold and Dorothea Arnold. The Move to the North: Establishing a New Capital, by Dieter Arnold and Peter Janosi.Pharaoh: Power and Performance, by Dorothea Arnold.Royal Women: Ladies of the Two Lands, by Isabel Stunkel. The Pharaoh's Subjects: Court and Provinces, by Wolfram Grajetzki. An Expanding Worldview: Conquest, Colonization, and Coexistence, by David O'Connor. The Impact of Middle Kingdom Literature: Ancient and Modern, by Richard B. Parkinson.Comprehending Life: Community, Environment, and the Supernatural, by Kei Yamamoto.Understanding Death: A Journey between Worlds, by Stephen Quirke.Abydos and Osiris: The Terrace of the Great God, by Kei Yamamoto.Temples: Secluded Domains for Kings and Gods, by Adela Oppenheim.Later Life of Middle Kingdom Monuments: Interrogating Tanis, by Marsha Hill. The final main section is entitled, “Middle Kingdom History and Archaeology.” It contains:Middle Kingdom History: An Overview, by Wolfram Grajetzki.Excavations by the Metropolitan Museum of Art at Middle Kingdom Sites, by Dieter Arnold and Adela Oppenheim.Selected Sites: Elephantine, Thebes, East Bank (Karnak and Luxor), Thebes, West Bank, Abydos, Middle Egypt, The Fayum, Lisht, Dahshur, Memphis, The Delta, by Dieter Arnold. Felix Arnold, Manfred Bietak, Luc Gabolde, Lisa Giddy, Janice Kamrin and by Josef Wegner.

She and her boss are on their way to another potential supplier in France. Once there she meets Gilles Frebourg, Comte de Chauvigny whom she had known years ago. When she was sixteen one of her friends had written the 25 year old Gilles a letter that was forged in Lee's hand and signed Lee's name to the letter. Gilles was not happy to be the recipient of such a vulgar letter and let Lee know this. She was heartbroken and embarrassed because she actually did have a very bad crush on him.Gilles takes advantage of Lee's presence by telling a rather forward woman who has been his mistress that he and Lee are engaged to be married. He proceeds to blackmail Lee after the woman leaves. Gilles has kept the letter that she had "written" all those years ago and threatens to reveal the contents to Lee's very proper fiancé, Drew, unless she agrees to marry him and stay with him for awhile. He tells her that they will part ways after a brief period of time and she can then return to her fiancé as though nothing has happened. Drew never needs to know. Gilles does not want to marry the other woman, Louise, as she is rather free with her favors and he doesn't want to have a wife that is like that plus he wants some land that her father will sell to him. Lee feels trapped and so she agrees to his outrageous blackmail. Gilles believes she is not a virgin and treats her accordingly. He is very hateful and mean to her throughout their marriage. Not only does she have to deal with Gilles and his erroneous beliefs but she also has to deal with the housekeeper which was recommended by the ex-mistress, Louise, and Louise herself. When Gilles discovers that she is a virgin her is further incensed. However from that one time she finds herself pregnant and Gilles feels that she doesn't want the baby while she comes to realize she still loves a man who may not ever love her. When Lee realizes she still loves Gilles she breaks off her engagement to Drew. Louise is behind several more machinations that befall Lee and Gilles eyes are slowly opened to what is going on around him. Gilles ends up defending her honor and it makes up for a lot of the hurt that he had inflicted upon Lee over the course of their marriage.

I'm surprised it's not syndicated it the paper...it's one of the few comics that is both funny and insightful...filled with metaphors on human nature...errr...penguin nature I mean? Anyway, I wizz through the Sunday comics mostly bored from the uninteresting stuff published there...but I always get a good giggle from this one. Good for all ages, although real young folks with little life experience may not get some of the layers of meaning contained within.
