A World Without Water, by Christopher Holley

About the Author New Yorker, Christopher Holley, has been an elementary school educator for over 12 years. Through working closely with children he has developed and refined his voice, drawing inspiration from greats like Roald Dahl, David A. Adler and Jeff Kinney. In his children's stories, Christopher tackles tough issues like water conservation, body image and acceptance. However, he has a whimsical side as well, telling tales of students being put in charge of their school, a fairy that grants moustaches and choosing super-duper super powers. Moving forwards, Christopher's goals are to continue working closely with children as an educator, and to author many more fantastic, kid-friendly stories. On a personal basis, Christopher is engaged and he simply loves dogs! In his spare time, he enjoys the Martial Arts, football and strategy games.

He creates stories that are unique, funny, entertaining and yet carry subtle messages about interactions between children and values important to their growth along with environmental concerns – all the while entertaining adult readers with clever plays on words. He is a delight to read and in this book he uses rhyming verse that makes the book sing. Of course no truly fine children’s book would attract youngsters without fine illustrations and fortunately for us Christopher has partnered with illustrator Frank Cassuto for this book and the result is a near perfect feat of accomplishment. In this extended story about the importance of water Christopher relates his concerns and those of his little characters in excellent rhyming verse. Every aspect of water is discussed – from the necessities of keeping gardens alive to fighting fires to swimming (or not!) to water pistols to animals and pets. But the people with the reminders on how to conserve water are the children of the story who share tips for water conservation such as limiting the amount of water used when brushing teeth, shorter showers, better dishwashing techniques, preventing the throwing of garbage in the lake and the importance of preserving water for our crops. The story ends with encouraging everyone to share the importance of water conservation to everyone in the world.Beautifully written and illustrated this is a top-notch book and makes us eager to read all of Christopher Holley’s books, Highly Recommended. Great! A boy wakes up in bed presumably after having a nightmare about there being no water.Font changes on line "Think about the lifeguards and courageous firemen" and then returns to original. Not sure if this is intentional or not! This following line doesn't quite make sense:"No water means no people and we'd the ones to blame!"UPDATE April 22nd, 2016 - The above error has been fixed by the author. (See comment.)Rather depressing but allows kids to see the reality and consequences of wasting water. Thankfully the book suggests practical ways for even kids to save water. The illustrations are dark to go with the dark theme with only the last page brightening up. This makes reading it in black and white a little more of a challenge but it is still readable. SO if you want to get the water message across to your kids then this is a good book to share with them. However it is unlikely a book that they will pick up and read over and over again for sheer enjoyment, hence 4 stars. Book provided in exchange for an honest review. Thanks, Liz

Sanders As an early educator, I am always on the lookout for children's books that are engaging and educational; but as a mother and children's author as well, I've learned that these types of books are not always easy to find. I applaud this author for taking an important global topic and breaking it down into a short, entertaining story that children of all ages can understand and relate to.Many in the children's book industry claim that rhyming books are taboo and only authors such as Dr. Seuss can successfully publish them. In my nearly twenty of years of teaching little ones, I can attest that this is simply not true. Children adore rhyming books and remember them much easier than those without rhymes. This author has eloquently proven this untrue as well. His rhymes are fun and engaging--everything a children's story should be.With its powerful message, colorful illustrations, and fluid writing, this book should be on the shelf of every parent or caregiver of young children.

Yeah, I thought so too. If you really want to read it all, here it is:Superman: Doomed (The New 52)As you can tell, I'm not very enthusiastic about this crossover. It started off okay, but it dragged on too long, they didn't have 21 issues worth of story, and Supergirl was just thrown in there to help sales of her book. (Poor Supergirl - they never know what to do with her.)The two Future's End tie-in issues have no connection to the Doomed storyline (and are barely related to Future's End).3 stars because although most of the individual issues are okay (# 11 wasn't that great), you're not getting anything resembling a coherent story here.

No spoilers here, just know that these characters have a story outside of the JL. For a Great companion to the JL the story makes sense, and the events that take place are epic enough to keep the fire lit under these Titans. thankfully, the writing in this title was on time! This series is a fun read. How comics should be, no excuses. The characters were great, the use of situation of characters was great! The exploitation of previous under tones were well written. the Art was top Notch! The way it should always be for these heavyweight titles. the pacing was great, and the story itself doesn't lose momentum or end short, or end flat. Common with stories made for characters of this Caliber. This is how I know the characters from the animations and from childhood reading. If you loved the first book then you will also appreciate this one. We have to convince DC to make this into a movie since they seem to do alot of New 52 stories. lol I hope this goes on for a while because it demands an audience for sure. trust Me! Good job DC Comics.

In the decades between the American Revolution and the American Civil War, the United States government was engaged in an ongoing war against several Native American tribes. Collectively, historians refer to the series of wars between the U.S. government and the American Indians simply as “The Indian Wars,” or “The American Indian Wars.” The Americans argued that they needed the land west of the Appalachian Mountains for development and settlement, while the various American Indian tribes argued that the land was their birthright; both sides were willing to shed blood to accomplish their goals! Perhaps the greatest series of battles between the Americans and Indians was the Northwest Indian War (1785-1795), which took place in what was then known as the Northwest Territory and what today comprises the states of Ohio and Indiana. On the one side was a modern army, ready to conquer the land, while on the other was a coalition of Indian tribes who were much better organized and equipped than their adversary believed. The result of the war proved to be a turning point not only in the history of the United States, but also in Native American History. The highpoint of the war for the Indians and the low point for the Americans was a battle often referred to as the “Defeat of St. Clair” for the American general who lost hundreds of men in a well-organized massacre to Indian forces led by chief Little Turtle. The following book brings St. Clair’s defeat to life in a way that has never been done before by using historical documents combined with Native American tales to create a narrative that is as exciting as it is edifying. Truly, once you read this book you will never look at American history in the same way!

A reminder of how the United States developed their strategies of oppression By leif (english review at the end)Den nydannede Unionen av amerikanske stater lærer på den harde måten å frykte motstandere og naboer når deres militærinvajon svikter under Saint Clair's knusende tap sent på 1700-tallet som beskrevet i "Saint Clair's Defeat: The Indians Massacre of the American Army".Vi lærer om det politiske klimaet og bakrunnen forut for Saint Clair's invasjon. The Indians Massacre of the American Army A novel by: Dwayne Walker Published by: Wiq Media (2015-10-07) 54 pages ISBN:The fledgling nation of the United states of America learns the hard way to fear opponents and neighbors when their military invasion fails in Saint Clair's Defeat in the late 18th. centuaryWe learn about the political climate and setting prior to Saint Clair's invasion. We're introduced to the participants of the battle. The fledling nation of states, and The Glaize community consisting at least of people from the Miami and Shawnee people. An analysis of the repercussions the battle had in their time for both nations gives a good understanding of how the subsequent attitude of hatred and mindless aggression against any oposission aginst american expansion and superiority forms a pattern in the american union.During this period the american leaders learned to exploit propaganda. 'They have started a campaign to draft masses of people for land occupation, and to bolster the military. Soon after the american military start to force the opposing societies into flight and into oblivion. They have also set the presedence in america to ignore treaties with other nations, and to push aside law and order when the american military goes to war.For a historical book discussing events and people in the early industrial era amongst different nations "Saint Clair's Defeat: The Indians Massacre of the American Army" does a credible job of introducing the societies and dominant mindset of the participants.Dwayne Walker quotes some of them, giving no references to where he found the quotes. That disappointes me, as it would grant a deeper understanding of the societies that recorded the quotes. disappointing as the source of such quotes would give clues to understand the society that recorded them. The Glaize community are introduced, but I don't quite grasp what it was or it's reach. Was it a nation of tribes, a city, or a transitory coalition of nations against a common enemy?I like how he introduces all the possible main charaters in this battle known as the battle of Saint Clair's defeat and the analysis of their role in the battle and in their community.4 out of 5 stars * * * *............................................My rating system:.5 Didn't finish* Can't believe I finished it** Finished it but didn't like it**.5 Meh*** Willing to try another by this author**** Good book***** Wow! CLAIR SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE FLAMBOYANT AND CAUSTIC By Robin Leigh Morgan I received a mobi.File [KINDLE] copy of this book from the author through a recent giveaway he had on LibraryThing and the following is my honest opinion. One of my best subjects in high school was history where I had about a 92/93 average, and American History was my favorite of all the history classes I had.One of the main reasons I can see this defeat has been repeatedly passed over is the lack of flamboyancy General St. Clair had when we compared him to General Custer. This is in spite of the fact that General Custer’s massacre had been only a fraction of the one St. Clair and his army experienced.Native American history has for too long been swept under the rug and forgotten about. Although the historical documentation exists it has, in my opinion, been tucked away in archives gathering dust. I know how hard it is to research a particular event in history, as I’ve helped someone doing research on such an item, and had gone with this individual to Washington, D.C. where I was given access to the stacks of the Library of the Library of Congress for a given range of the LC classification system for books. One interesting thing about this event is, if you recall all the history you ever took, while any major event in history has been usually been named for its location, this event was named for the person most responsible for it happening. It is for this reason I admired the tenacity Mr. Walker had in gathering the information contained in this book and for presenting it in readable form which is so prevalent in most history books. Not only has this author merely given the information pertaining to this tragic event in American History, he has given the readers of this book some insight about the event. This is why I’m giving this book the 5 STARS it so richly deserves.

By Douglas Brown Another book by Dwayne that sheds light on some fascinating aspects of a period of history we just don't hear much about. Excellent research, especially considering the limited amount of source material and almost all of that coming from one side since the other side hadn't developed written records. It is a supreme irony that the first military foray under President Washington's auspices turns into a slow-motion replay of Braddock's Defeat - the very battle in which Washington himself earned his reputation, and it turned out that way for pretty much the same reasons. Inept but arrogant leadership, extended and unsecured supply lines, total lack of reconnaissance, and tactics unsuited to the situation. One might question why in the heck St, Clair was allowed to be there in the first place. He had been "exonerated", but barely so, for his generalship in the Revolution. Now, essentially banished to the frontier in a public office that is about a non-public as you can get, St. Clair ends up in command of a strategically important mission. And once again it is a disaster, and once again he is one of the few survivors. In this story, you have to empathize with the Native Americans Indians, who were placed into an impossible position because of the readiness of all the Europeans (England, France and the new US) to renege on any deal if it got in the way of expansion. They appeared not to want this particular war, but it came looking for them anyway. Two hundred years later, things aren't that much different: no matter who you are, once Uncle Sam takes an interest in your affairs, they aren't likely to improve.

Essential reading for travelers who wish to enjoy the amazing diversity of Australia, this book outlines the history of that great southern democracy from the arrival of the earliest Aborigines some fifty or sixty thousand years ago to the present.

The ancient Aboriginal way of life is described; early European sightings; and the establishment of the British convict colony in 1788, which dragged the continent into the modern world. The dynamic story of Australia in the twentieth century, its role in two world wars, the post-war discoveries of huge mineral deposits, its courting of Asia in recent decades, the return of vast areas of land to the Aborigines, and its confident cultural vibrancy in wine, food, film, and art are also examined.

Figueroa If you're going to the Olympic Games in Sydney Australia in September, this book will provide the background you need. The author takes you from the aboriginal Dream-Time, 53,000 years ago, to the booming cities of 2000. If you want to know why boomerangs return, how in the early days of settlement many ex-convicts became millionaires (legally!), where is the world's largest flat surface, at which battle in the Vietnam War the Aussies killed the Vietcong 15 to 1, why Canberra and not Sydney is the capital city, when Australia experienced a military coup, or who is the cricket equivalent of Babe Ruth, this is your book. There is also a chronology of the main historical events and, useful for visitors, a historical gazeteer of the main cities and tourist spots.

A Perfect Encyclopedia By Michelle Steenland-Gilbert At first I did not see how this would be a good novel for someone who wants to travel but I quickly changed my mind. There is a lot of detail and history, with good examples and thorough coverage on every aspect of culture. You do not have to read it in order, so if you can easily skip around if you only want to read without feeling lost of that you are missing something. The outline of the book makes sense, and it is thorough with long chapters so I would not suggest it for a light read to rest your mind. But, if you want a small compact book that has everything you need to know about Australia and how it came to be, this is your book. Well written and highly recommended.

I searched for books on Australia and this seemed to be the most objectively written. I wouldn't use it like a Fodor's guide to plan a trip with interesting places to eat or stay. It does give a nice history of the country to familiarize yourself with Australia and gives you an idea of places to see in this wonderful and diverse country. I'm going to check out books from this series on other countries.

Lily Love's book is honest yet understanding towards women, and offers genuinely good advice from the female perspective. I was worried that I would read this and be asked to follow a bunch of rules that would change who I essentially am but it's not the case. This book gives practical, factual advice that I can follow while still maintaining a strong sense of self while dating. And not only does it explain what men want, but how you have to be happy in yourself first. Great book with great incites! Makes you think about all the things we as women do wrong and why we don't succeed with men.

I love my husband and I always want to keep our relationship burning and keep him attracted to me from now till we grow old together. The points discussed in this book were very valid to form a solid relationship . The author touched on tops such as looking good and walk around with an air of confidence which is sexy to men, love him , maintain a friendship, listen to him , respect him and definitely spice things up. This is a great relationship guide. I highly recommend !

Many thought China's rise would fundamentally remake the global order. Yet, much like other developing nations, the Chinese state now finds itself in a status quo characterized by free trade and American domination. Through a cutting-edge historical, sociological, and political analysis, Ho-fung Hung details the competing interests and economic realities that temper the dream of Chinese supremacy―forces that are stymieing growth throughout the global South.

Hung focuses on four common misconceptions: that China could undermine orthodoxy by offering an alternative model of growth; that China is radically altering power relations between the East and the West; that China is capable of diminishing the global power of the United States; and that the Chinese economy would restore the world's wealth after the 2008 financial crisis. His work reveals how much China depends on the existing order and how the interests of the Chinese elites maintain these ties. Through its perpetuation of the dollar standard and its addiction to U.S. Treasury bonds, China remains bound to the terms of its own prosperity, and its economic practices of exploiting debt bubbles are destined to fail. Hung ultimately warns of a postmiracle China that will grow increasingly assertive in attitude while remaining constrained in capability.

The China Boom: Why China Will Not Rule the World (Contemporary Asia in the World), by Ho-fung Hung

Review

[An] informative study.... [The China Boom] paints a convincing picture that China may not be the superpower many predicted it to be.

(Publishers Weekly)

This valuable treatise will appeal to both scholars and more casual readers with an interest in China.

(Library Journal)

Masterful.

(Foreign Affairs)

It is a fast-paced, highly readable, thoroughly provocative, and (rare for an academic book) truly enjoyable account of 400 years of Chinese economic history right up to the present day.

(Asian Review of Books)

So many books on China recycle the same stories and historical anecdotes, but this one tells the story from the point of view of economic history. It is scholarly yet readable, interesting throughout.

(Marginal Revolution)

Review

A very readable and informative book that will find a wide readership. Its great strength is that it shows on many different fronts that the notion of China's rising dominance may be unrealistic or, at least, premature.

(Victor Shih, University of California, San Diego)

Timely and important, Ho-fung Hung's accessible and clear-eyed assessment of China's prospects, rooted in both the longer patterns of China's own history and global economics, reaches unexpected and reassuring conclusions. A stimulating intellectual journey led by a calm and judicious guide.

(Robert A. Kapp, former president of the U.S.-China Business Council)

Ho-Fung Hung's important and stimulating work places China's recent economic reforms and development trajectory firmly within their proper historical context, thereby releasing them from triumphalist or defeatist narratives that begin in 1949 or 1978. The China of the past four decades, Hung shows us, is the same China that has wrestled with modernization since the early Qing Dynasty and has faced the same problems many times before.

(Michael Pettis, Peking University)

Ho-fung Hung's brilliant analysis of the intertwining of China's national trajectory with the evolution of global capitalism adds new energy and insights to one of the most fundamental debates in contemporary political economy.

(Peter Evans, University of California, Berkeley)

China, By Someone That Actually Knows What He Is Talking About By Andy in Washington For those of us who remember the American business world of the 1980’s and 90’s, we lived in fear that the Japanese system was going to take over the world’s business. The Japanese made all the steel, built all the cars, were buying up American property, and generally seemed to have the whole “management thing” figured out. The popular business press consisted of doomsday projections for American business, and articles on how to mimic the Japanese success. Anyone who forecast an end to Japanese dominance was out-of-touch or a dreamer. Then a funny thing happened. The Japanese system had, buried within it, systemic problems. Stodgy companies, poor demographics and over-investment led to a period of contraction and deflation, making the Japanese economy a problem child in the 90’s and 2000’s.Ho-fung Hung provides a very similar analysis for modern-day China. While the popular press praises the “China Model” of low labor costs, high investment and state-managed capitalism, Hung explores the problems inherent in that model.=== The Good Stuff ===* Hung knows what he is talking about. He is not afraid to cross disciplines, and makes his arguments using politics, economics, social sciences, history, military analysis, government policy…and probably every other department of a modern university. He is able to tie these together to form a coherent and logical argument about his views of China going forward.* The book starts out a little stuffy, and I was preparing myself for 300 pages of academic gobbledygook. But Hung quickly finds his voice, and the book becomes a pleasant and informative narrative. It is not light reading, but it is not a college economics textbook either. If you are able to understand simple economic concepts, some basic math, and read at the high-school level, you will enjoy the book and understand Hung’s arguments. For the most part, Hung avoids hand-waving and appeals to “common sense”-rather he backs his opinions with facts and accepted theories.* Hung is not afraid to tackle “sacred cows” and present unpopular viewpoints. For example, he notes that the “Great Leap Forward”, while a brutal and painful experience for many of China’s citizens, did in fact achieve its goal. By forcing production resources out of agriculture, China was able to use its agricultural economic bounty to fund its industrialization. Marx, Keynes and Greenspan would have recognized the strategy, if not the tactics.* The book also touches on real-work questions. Anyone who has visited Shanghai has no doubt shaken their head and wondered, “Where did all the money come from”? Any visitor to areas a little off the beaten path must have questioned the environmental costs of China’s rapid rise, or thought about the happiness of low-paid workers living in a corporate dormitory. Hung explores, and provides at least one analysis, on questions such as these.=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===* I am almost afraid to type this, but I wonder about some of Hung’s facts. Specifically, he seems to take Chinese government statistics as being correct and truthful. Much of what I have read specifically warns about this. To be fair, Hung uses a variety of sources and tries to backstop whenever possible.* The narrative occasionally jumps around a bit, especially from year to year. Nothing too confusing, but a little tighter editing might have helped.=== Summary ===I loved the book, and would absolutely recommend it for anyone who thinks they understand China, or wants to understand more about it. While Hung takes a definite viewpoint, he defends it well and connects many areas into one unified thought. I don’t agree 100% with his conclusions ---I think he is a bit pessimistic about China--- but I would prepare carefully if I was ever to argue the point with him. The book is a bit of a “serious” read, but nothing too difficult or obscure and I ended up reading it in two or three sessions. I plan to recommend the book to a number of people who have an interest in business in China.=== Disclaimer ===I was able to read an advance copy through the courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley.

Hung effectively discredits the naive views that the Chinese "model" is superior and that China is a disruptive power likely to replace the USA or even merely challenge the US as a global hegemon. This is a thoughtful book that starts with a concise and thoughtful overview of Chinese economic history going back to the Early Modern period. This includes description of the engagement with the emerging global economy in the late Ming-Qing periods, a discussion of the lack of industrialization of the very large and advanced Qing economy, and the failure of a series of state-led efforts at catch up during the disastrous 19th century and first half of the 20th century. The latter were due in good part to the weakness of the Qing state and its initial successors. This is followed by an excellent chapter on the Maoist period, which Hung argues convincingly provided the platform for the subsequent growth of the Chinese economy. For all the enormous crimes of the Maoist period, committed by what is likely the most brutal regime in modern history, China was left with a very large, relatively healthy and literate workforce, a real industrial base, and considerable new infrastructure. An interesting point is that this was achieved without incurring external debt, which shielded China from from many of the problems experienced by developing nations in the second half of the 20th century. Hung then describes the series of reforms that led to the remarkable Chinese boom, stressing the role of state leadership, a synergistic relationship with the neo-liberal order that emerged in the last quarter of the 20th century, the crucial role of export industries, the ways China followed the paths of and actually became the center of other Asian economic successes, and the interesting role of capital and management investments, some from overseas Chinese entrepreneurs, some later from American banks. The narrative chapters are followed by a set of more analytical chapters addressing China's role in reducing global inequality, whether China will replace the US, and the role of China in the most recent global economic crisis. Hung finds China's role in reducing global inequality to be ambiguous. He argues convincingly that China's prospects of becoming a global hegemon are slight. China has and may continue to produce some readjustment of global power but China's economic growth and continued success depends on the existing world economic system, so the likelihood of being a major revisionist power is small. Indeed, Hung points to some interesting examples of the ways in which China actually contributes to American power, notably its complicity in maintaining the dollar as the world's reserve currency and its thirst for US government debt. He concludes this section with an interesting analysis of the ways in which the structure of the Chinese economy contributed to the last great economic crisis. Throughout this book, he points out considerable defects of the Chinese economic system and the existence of a series of powerful problems that are likely to produce enormous problems. Rectifying these problems will require considerable reform and as some of these defects are built into the Party-State, they will be hard to address without significant political reform, a daunting prospect. All of this is a very useful corrective to a great deal of the nonsense written about China. There are some defects of Hung's arguments. A minor issue is his treatment of why China didn't industrialize. A sociologist, he looks for sociological explanations and finds them in some interesting facts about merchant elites in Qing China. Like a lot of social scientists who have dealt with this topic, he implies that appropriate social or economic structure will automatically lead to the kinds of technological innovations that are the heart of industrialization. This is improbable. More important is that while Hung's analysis of the economic defects of China is on target, he largely omits some additional factors that are likely to impair China. China's rapidly aging population is discussed only in the context of labor force. This aging population, however, will impose unprecedented care burdens for which the Chinese state is wholly unprepared. A related aspect which I've seen almost no one discuss is the severe health threats faced by Chinese society. China has a tobacco abuse epidemic and is beginning a diabetes epidemic that are going to have major consequences. Hung mentions but doesn't really discuss the enormous environmental problems faced by China, another series of problems that will require enormous reforms. Finally, while Hung is correct that China is unlikely to replace the US as a global hegemon it may be more disruptive than he suggests. Authoritarian states under pressure, particularly challenges to legitimacy, tend to use aggressive foreign policy to boost social solidarity. We may see this in the near future.

Enjoyable By Autamme_dot_com To some, this book may appear to be heresy or denying the inevitable, no matter what they would like to otherwise believe. Yet can this book be incredibly incisive or just stating what might be the obvious fact – China will NOT rule the world. Is the author criticising the new clothes of the emperor? Maybe China will not become the world-dominating superpower many fear, expect or await. Time will tell, yet nonetheless the author offers up an interesting analysis and forecast through a mix of politics, sociology, business and history. Four key points are taken up that, the author claims, show that China’s current meteoric growth is transient. There are said to be misconceptions about China’s boom, namely that that China could undermine orthodoxy by offering an alternative model of growth; that China is radically altering power relations between the East and the West; that China is capable of diminishing the global power of the United States; and that the Chinese economy would restore the world’s wealth after the 2008 financial crisis. Many have pointed towards China’s present “financial hold” on the West due to it being the low-cost workshop of the world, sucking in masses of foreign currency; yet many point out that whilst China could dump the Dollar and create a world meltdown in the process, it is in the country’s own interests (and especially its elites’ interest) to maintain the status quo and not do anything rash. In more recent months many cracks have appeared in Chinese financial markets and structures; is the economy over-heating and what may occur if things start to split. China is probably trying to rapidly paddle and maintain the status quo for its own selfish reasons; at the same time the rest of the world can watch on and hope…The author has put together a gripping read about a fascinating subject within an engaging, credible package. It manages to be accessible to the generalist reader whilst being a nuanced, actionable book for the academic or specialist. It is not screeching hysterics but provides a fairly matter-of-fact assessment with a lot of referenced sources so the sceptical, curious or argumentative reader can dig deeper as required. There is a lot to this book; at times it felt overwhelming, but maybe it is the equivalent of a good Chinese buffet dinner; a lot of things for everyone and it is good to offer more than most people could consume. It was an interesting, pleasurable read and it could be good to put this book into a time capsule and look back in the future to see just how right on the money the author was.

Merrimon Crawford Jackie Braun's MOONLIGHT AND ROSES is a short tender romance that pits adversaries together and against each other. The scenery and language of viniculture and viticulture gives this romance a realistic and informative setting that complements the characters.Jaye Monroe's entire life has been turned inside out when her father dies and his will is read. Alongside her father, Jaye has built the Medallion wine brand with her heart and soul. Her father's will turns the winery and vineyards over to her step-mother and gives Jaye her step-mother's house with all the antiques and items she despises. Jaye's step-mother makes matters worse by selling the vineyards and company to an outsider, Zack Holland. Zack, heir to a renowned prize-winning California winery, wants to strike out on his own and forget the pain of his family and past. When he encounters Jaye, a strong woman and a bit of a tomboy, he is dazzles by her looks, intelligence and spirit. Can the two of them work together for the good of Medallion when their ultimate business plans conflict so? When their physical attraction can no longer be denied, will they be forced to choose between love and business? In MOONLIGHT AND ROSES, Jackie Braun creates emotional depth at the same time that the conflicting business interests of the hero and heroine create a fun, suspenseful romantic conflict. Readers will appreciate the strong intelligent Jaye as a heroine whose spirit shines in all she does. Zack, a dreamer and a realist, is a perfect match for Jaye as he values what is most dear to her but also adds his own vision to the business. The author's meticulous research on wine varieties and viticulture grounds this romance with an interesting backdrop for wine enthusiasts and neophytes alike. Jaye and Zack's growing attraction brings them together and creates a more expansive vision, not only of each other, but also of the business. The initial emotional devastation of the will's reading finds the perfect ending as Jackie Braun combines business and romance in a narrative with an expansive view that includes a tribute to both family and independence. The narrative style flows smoothly while providing delightful surprises. Jackie Braun's MOONLIGHT AND ROSES is a delightful romance on all levels from emotional content to stylistic form.

New owner Zack Holland desperately needs a new start, and while he is shocked to learn Jaye was opposed to the sale, he can't afford to back down. What worked so well with this book is that there was a lot of incentive for both characters to behave cruelly and immaturely, but they didn't. Put into a very difficult position, they earned their respect from each other and made the best of the situation. Watching them fall in love was a pleasure because they were both screwed-up yet good people who deserved their happy ending. And what a well-written happy ending it was.Jackie Braun did her research when it came to the technicalities of owning and running a vineyard, and I appreciated all those touches of realism that brought the setting and the situations to life. She really transports the reader there. This was my first book by this author and I'm very impressed.

What Froude says of history is true also of astronomy: it is the most impressive where it transcends explanation. It is not the mathematics of astronomy, but the wonder and the mystery that seize upon the imagination. The calculation of an eclipse owes all its prestige to the sublimity of its data; the operation, in itself, requires no more mental effort than the preparation of a railway time-table.

A Historical View of Astronomy By Liz Shaw This book is nearly a century old, and it is fascinating reading for astronomy buffs as you can see the historical development of the science of astronomy at a time when technology like spectroscopy was just coming into use. The author presents his subject in an interesting way that any non-scientist can read and enjoy. If you are interested at all in astronomy, you'd probably enjoy this book.

Serviss and first published in 1909, "Curiosities of the Sky" offers a fascinating glimpse into the state of science just a little over 100 years ago.A lot of what we take for granted and as firmly established scientific facts were either unknown back then, or still unproven theories, around half a century before the first man-made satellite would be orbiting our planet. The author never speculates but describes everything based on what was then known as facts, and whenever he is dealing with something unproven, he says so.The book is divided into chapters about such topics as comets and meteors, northern lights, seemingly completely black and void areas in the universe, the "unfixedness" of what we call fixed stars, the violent history of the Moon, and - maybe most fascinating of all for the modern reader - the possibility of past or present life on Mars.Remember, this was written when the only means of observing the universe were telescopes based on Earth - no Hubble or James Webb space telescopes yet, and radioastronomy had not yet been invented. But photography was already widely used in science, and the author often refers to photographs to illustrate a certain point. My (free) kindle ebook came without any, but the way everything is described is good enough for the imagination without pictures. An excerpt from the preface reads: "The idea of the author is to tell about these things in plain language, but with as much scientific accuracy as plain language will permit, showing the wonder that is in them without getting away from the facts. Most of them have hitherto been discussed only in technical form, and in treatises that the general public seldom sees and never reads."This "plain language" is rather poetic at times, and makes for very good reading, easy to understand for anyone remotely interested in astronomy without necessitating a degree in astrophysics. It was not the first time I've come across Garrett Putnam Serviss. He lived from 1851 to 1919 and was an American astronomer as well as an early science fiction writer. And it was as the latter that I first "met" him: as the author of "A Columbus of Space", a book I have reviewed here..I have mentioned above that the chapter about Mars is maybe the most fascinating part of the book. You have, I assume, heard the name Schiaparelli in connection with our neighbour planet. If not, let me just briefly tell you that it was by the Italian scientist (1835 - 1910) that the world first heard of "canali" on Mars - presumed channels for irrigation of the dry surface, built by the presumedly highly intelligent Marsians and clearly "seen" by Schiaparelli and many others, such as his American colleague Lowell (1855 - 1916), of equally scientific minds, through their telescopes. We have long come to learn the truth about Mars - there are no channels, and never have been. But at a time when their existence was rarely doubted within the scientific community, Garrett P. Serviss wrote that most interesting chapter.A lot of other things in the book have since been thoroughly examined and explained with the help of modern technology. We know a lot more about "solar wind", for instance, black holes and novae, and what comets are really made of. Still, it is interesting to see how people put their minds to explaining things as best as they could, with the means they had. And who knows how our up-to-date knowledge of astronomy will appear to a reader in another 100 years!

Faithful to the spirit of the television show, but with its own comic book feel, and expanding on the SheZow mythos. 36 pages, ALL story with no ads. That's a Perry big issue. Written AND drawn by Niels Erickson. I can't think of any other comic book with a one-man art/script department, can you? Miller I loved watching SheZow when it aired on TV; this comic feels just like watching one of Guy's/SheZow's 11 minute adventures on the tube! The characters look just like the folks in the series, it has the She-larious humor I came to expect from the cartoon & Sheila's there, too! Hoping that there are further issues coming soon! Well done!

Tuazon As a fan of SheZow, I can say this falls in line with what you'd find in any episode of SheZow. Puns galore, she-mazing action, and a brand new sidekick each time. I will say the comic though is slightly more cheeky than in the show, perhaps the freedom of the medium? I can't complain, I love every page of it, especially Sheila!

Even in the 21st century, the popular image of a scientist is a reclusive genius in a lab coat, mixing formulas or working out equations inaccessible to all but the initiated few. The idea that scientists are somehow smarter than the rest of us is a common yet dangerous misconception, getting us off the hook for not knowing or caring how the world works. How did science become so divorced from our everyday experience? Is scientific understanding so far out of reach for the nonscientists among us? As science popularizer Chad Orzel argues in Eureka, even the people who are most forthright about hating science are doing science, often without even knowing it. Orzel shows that science isn't something alien and inscrutable, beyond the capabilities of ordinary people; it's central to the human experience. Every human can think like a scientist and regularly does so in the course of everyday activities. The disconnect between this reality and most people's perceptions is mostly due to the common misconception that science is a body of (boring, abstract, often mathematical) facts. In truth science is best thought of as a process: Looking at the world, thinking about what makes it work, testing your mental model by comparing it to reality, and telling others about your results. The facts that we too often think of as the whole of science are merely the products of this scientific process. Eureka shows that this process is one we all regularly use and something that everybody can do. By revealing the connection between the everyday activities people do - solving crossword puzzles, playing sports, or even watching mystery shows on television - and the processes used to make great scientific discoveries, Orzel shows that if we recognize the process of doing science as something familiar, we will be better able to appreciate scientific discoveries and use scientific facts and thinking to help address the problems that affect us all.
