A descendant of Nathan Bedford Forrest's slaves, Al Arnold, tells his journey of embracing his Confederate heritage. His ancestor, Turner Hall, Jr., a Black Confederate, served as a body servant for two Confederate soldiers and an orderly for Gen. Robert E. Lee. Turner Hall, Jr. was celebrated by Blacks and Whites in his community. Hall attended the last Civil War reunion at Gettysburg in 1938. He was interviewed by the national talk radio show, "We, The People". This is a personal journey of faith, heritage, race and family wrapped around the grace of God through the eyes and honest thoughts of a modern Black man. Arnold argues for African Americans to embrace Confederate heritage to capture the enriched Black history of the Civil War era. He bestows dignity and honor on his Confederate ancestor and challenges the traditional thoughts of modern African Americans. Arnold rests in his faith as the uniting force that reconciles our colorful past to our bright future.

He writes about one of the most famous African American Confederate participants of the Civil War, his very own ancestor, Turner Hall, Jr. Arnold uses his own recollections of stories passed down through the generations along with photos to instill in today's Southerners, especially those of African American descent, that they should be proud of their Confederate heritage, because their ancestors earned it. He stresses that through Christ, African Americans can rise above the thoughts of past injustices done to them and become great Christian men of honor and success. However, he stresses, that they must rethink who they are and learn to work together, not fight each other, to better their lives.By telling Mr. Hall's story with the backdrop of the Civil War, Mr. Arnold demonstrates the greatness already embedded in the African American ancestry, even when their stories have went mostly untold; left forgotten, which is a grave travesty. You cannot tell the history of the Civil War without African Americans. It is impossible to tell one without the other. This is not solely because of slavery. In the beginning, the Northerners believed the "insurrection" would end within six months. They never imagined the power of African American Confederates to keep the war going year after year. It is a testament to the tenacity as much as the sheer determination of Confederate blacks to fight for and withtheir Caucasian counterparts and practically family. These children grew up together. When the white soldiers went off to fight, they took their childhood friends along to look after their needs as well as workloads. Most other slaves kept the homelands profiting in order to enable the war to continue for as long as it did. They did not rebel en mass like the Northerners believed they would.I loved that Mr. Arnold was able to finally, as a historian, remind laymen of this fact. As a historian, myself, I remember the saying, "History was always written by the victor". It wasn't until the ladder part of the twentieth century that any other story was given any merit much less any care. However, Mr. Arnold reminds us that this false sense of history was far from the truth. He reminds us that real history is so much richer and more complex than we have ever been lead to believe. And, the untold stories need to be told in order for us to keep the momentum going, to keep each one of our heritages alive and thriving. There is so much more to this book than meets the eye. And, the proof can be found in the life of Mr. Turner Hall, Jr.Thank you Publish Green and NetGalley for giving me a free copy of this book to read and give an honest review.

Finally, someone has the courage to challenge the distorted meaning of "confederate". Far too long the bigots and hate groups have hi-jacked the meaning of “confederate” and the flag without any recourse. Now an African American and true descendant of an actual slave participant in the Confederate Army during the Civil War has emerged to tell the story of his great-great grandfather. Regardless of how minuscule some may view his role, it was a role that was vital and had to be done by someone. Having served in the military myself during the first Gulf War, I clearly understand that all roles of the military are important, and even more so during war time. What an amazing story! Unlike myself and others who have allowed hate groups to hi-jack the meaning of “confederate” due to our ignorance or fear of political, social or cultural backlash…Mr. Arnold has boldly stood up for a heritage that he and his family are so rightfully due. Like Mr. Arnold, I too am African American and proud to be from the wonderful state of Mississippi. I must admit…I certainly did not agree with him on the representation of the confederate flag but through the reading of this book (twice), I am now challenging my own perception of what I thought to be true. I believe every citizen of the United States should read this book (young and old alike) because it’s time that we as citizens challenge many of the distorted perceptions plaguing our great nation. We live in an information age; therefore the truth behind many buried lies will eventually find its way to the surface. We can remain in denial and prolong the change that’s inevitable or courageously embrace it to better mankind. I challenge anyone that has not read this book to do so and “dare” to allow Mr. Arnold to take you on a journey that might make you really think. Job well done…Mr. Arnold!

By David Fenn Truth is sometimes hard to take, especially if it something that, according to all popular teachings, couldn't have been like that! This little book tells a family story that could/should be the way to live. I started it because of the second most important thing to me, my Confederate heritage, and finished it because of the first most important thing, my faith in Jesus Christ! An honest, heart felt story to bring US, you and me and our Country, together.

She has lost her husband to a sudden heart attack and decides to go to Bora Bora to lay her husbands ashes and her sorrow to rest. Tom is a high profile actor who wants to kick back and tack a well needed vacation. He is in the mood for fun and no strings! It is a crazy twist of fate and now they are both in for a new beginning. Tess is torn by the love she still feels for her deceased husband and the excitement of a new relationship. Tom is overwhelmed by his feelings for Tess but knows that she is struggling. Tom finally puts his commitment issues aside but can Tess take the pressure of Tom's high profile lifestyle. A beautiful story! ~~ Michele McMullen~#2 Shayla's StoryI will start by saying that I loved Beverly's first book in this series called No More Wasted Time and to truly enjoy this book to the fullest please read that one first! I can without a doubt say that she certainly has another winner on her hands. We were introduced to Shayla briefly in the first book and had only scrapped the surface. Shayla thought she knew what she wanted and had her life all mapped out. She has the "perfect man" well Mat is mostly perfect when he has time for her. She has a great job with wonderful perks. This belief is sent into a tailspin when she is invited to attend the wedding of her uncle in Greece and comes face to face with Tess's son John. Tess is the beautiful woman that her uncle is marrying.I loved the immediate attraction and pull they felt for each other. Beverly's ability to make you feel what her character's felt is truly amazing. Shayla would love to do nothing more than ignore the sparks she feels and ignore John, but he is relentless and works at wearing her down. He knows how he affects her and wants more than she has to offer. This was a beautiful journey. I loved watching Shayla finally figure out what she really needs and wants and who it needs to be with her on that path. I must say I was very surprised by the revelation and reveal of Mat. I certainly did not see that little twist coming!I can not wait to see where this family leads us next! It is a great series and a must read!!! I was gifted this work by the author for an honest review.~~Michele McMullen~~#3 The Perfect SomedayI can not tell you how much I enjoy Beverly's books. This one is certainly another wonderful addition to the Mathews family series.Tracy is one of Tess's daughters and we were introduced to her in No More Wasted Time. Tracy is now a college graduate and quite a smart young woman. She and her sister are in Italy on vacation and decide to travel to a beautiful sightseeing spot for her to capture the scenery she has always dreamed and add them to her collection. The girls finally reach their destination only to find out that their is a private wedding being held there. JC is the adventurous one and decides that they should crash the party to get the pictures Tracy wants. The best part about this is every guest is wearing a decorative mask. This may work to their benefit!Giovanni is a handsome, sexy wedding guest. He is instantly enamored by the beautiful Tracy. Upon meeting, JC introduces them using an alias. To not chance that if they get caught to be found. Tracy and Giovanni spend a glorious evening together just getting to know each other. He takes her to the most beautiful out of the way areas to get that perfect shot. They have wonderful chemistry and delicious wine and vow at the end of the evening to reconnect. Tracy types her number into Giovanni's phone and exits the party.A strange course of events take place and the meeting doesn't take place. It leaves Tracy a bitter taste for the men of Italy! She is given the opportunity to work for a large vineyard and reluctantly decides that is in her best interest to give it a go. She is not prepared for the journey that this new position will take her. This new found job may be just what she needs to forget the lost love and place her on the right path for happiness!! It may also show her a few surprises and enlighten her on the past events that have made her reluctant at love!Beverly takes us the reader on another wonderful journey with characters that have wonderful banter, are beautifully thought out and easy to fall in love with! I loved the sexual tension and humorous banter between Tracy and Vincent! Kudos Ms. Preston you have done a wonderful job!~~Michele McMullen~~#4 Surviving BrokenI am such a fan of Beverly's books and so enjoy her flare with the pen! She brings her characters to life in such a way that the reader becomes so committed to the characters and their beautifully written story. This is the fourth book in the Mathews family series this is JC story. She is the fun, flirty daughter of Tess. JC has her time to shine and oh my word what a whirl wind journey of emotion we are taken on.The lovely JC has learned to live her life by a set of rules and guidelines that she has put in place to protect her heart. She classifies her men like her scoops of ice cream....I like him, I love him and oh my I gotta have him. She refuses to become to attached to any man and does a great job of protecting her feelings.JC meets Luca at a family wedding and she thinks yes I gotta have him. He is tall, dark , handsome and oh yes Italian. He appears to be the perfect man but unfortunately he is so far from it and does a damn good job of hiding it. He reveals the real him when he finally thinks that he has her worn down enough to tolerate it. He wants her so broken that she can't leave.JC is a survivor and with the help of her loving and supportive family she rallies and rises from the ashes. This experience did certainly not leave her unscathed. She is now much more withdrawn and protective. She trusts no man and has no desire too. This soon becomes a problem when she meets the new neighbor Reed Ryder. He is a sexy, compassionate man who has certainly had his share of hurt and heartbreak. He is so far from JC's type that she doesn't see the harm in "being friends". This soon becomes confusing for her when she realizes what a beautiful man inside and out that are Texan Hunk is! I loved the witty, sexually charged dialogue between them. It was a sassy game of cat and mouse. Is it possible that these two broken people can find it in their hearts and each other to heal and live again? Take a chance and let Reed and JC allow you to follow them on their journey of healing, forgiving, trusting and hopefully learning to love again! Hats off to Beverly for another beautifully written story.I was gifted this book for an honest review.~~Michele McMullen~~

This was my first Beverly Preston read and I really enjoyed it. It was beautifully written. I felt like I was on vacation in Bora Bora and could see and feel what Tom & Tess experienced there. It was a very sweet story of second chance love, letting go, and being able to accept that "life is about today". I look forward to reading more of this series.SHAYLA'S STORY: Desire for an endless tomorrow...4.5 nipple grazing stars... Shayla's Story is the 2nd book in the Matthews/Clemmins Family Series. It can be read as a standalone, however; it's a richer experience if you read No More Wasted Time first. Beverly Preston writes in such a descriptive colorful way that you actually feel like part of the experience, the family, the vacation destinations, the drama, and the love. I enjoyed this book even more than the first and can't wait for the next one to be released.THE PERFECT SOMEDAY: 5 BHS (Broken Heart Syndrome) stars... Beverly Preston has turned me into a page turning mess! I have smiled, snickered, giggled, and literally laughed out loud. I have sighed, sniffled, gasped, held my breath in anticipation, and even blushed, "Oh my God, Vincent." I'm in love with The Matthews Family Series, and by my calculations there is at least one more left, I'll be waiting for JC's story. Beverly Preston, I would love to see a tough woman come along who could put Antonio in his place and turn that womanizer into a one-woman-man!SURVIVING BROKEN: Beverly Preston just keeps getting better and better. I feel like a member of the Mathews family, I love all of them and want to go to join them in Colorado for Christmas. I've always enjoyed JC's personality and it was a thrill to get to know her more in this story. Surviving Broken was a very emotional journey, one that will put your in touch with your angry self and your sad self, you might wanna have some tissues handy. There are some very strong characters in this story, I don't wanna give away any spoilers, but you might be tempted to throw things and say words not recommended in front of children. You might also melt into a puddle on the floor when you feel the chemistry between a certain skinny dipping couple...you might want to jump in yourself to cool off! I agree that, "blood doesn't make family, love does".

Harris I bought these books individually and I can't say how lucky everyone is to be able to buy them all together.I read a LOT, seriously! These books really touched me and I loved that they were about a family. The first book starts with the mother's story. I loved that it was about a woman in her 40's. I was so glad to read a series I could relate to. I can't rave about these books enough and I don't believe in reviewing a book to the extent of spoiling the series! I'll just say, read these and fall in love with the Mathews Family! I did!

Review

"We should thank the authors for the great effort they have made to gather all the diverse information available and to present it in a highly comprehensive book, and one that can only be recommended to all readers interested in this challenging field."--M. That said, Marine mammals: evolutionary biology will certainly be popular with students, because it is clearly and concisely written, and intelligently illustrated."--in CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS

"...the book does represent a good reference source that I will certainly use myself, and it will serve those who teach these themes extremely well. Berta et al. deserve to be congratulated for this comprehensive tome - it is a thorough, precise and clearly written reference that will serve admirably those interested in the evolution of marine mammals."--Corey J.A. By Autonomeus This is the latest annual edition of the indispensable "State of the World," and it should be at the top of your reading list. No coincidence, it is timed to correspond with the "State of the Union" address. The world we live in today can no longer afford limited nationalistic thinking -- we must learn to think and act globally, and this book is a key part of racing up that learning curve. The 2002 edition contains 8 chapters, on topics including global warming, population, agriculture, toxic wastes, resource conflicts (such as wars over diamonds in Africa), and global governance. Beginning in August, the U.N. World Summit on Sustainable Development will be held in Johannesburg, and the lead essay frames an agenda for that meeting. "The Skeptical Environmentalist," the book that is the current favorite of libertarian anti-environmentalists everywhere, is subtitled "Measuring the Real State of the World," a none too subtle dig at the Worldwatch Institute. Lester Brown and the others at the Institute have been addressing the most important issues facing the world for many years now, and they deserve our respect and our thanks! This is no time to surrender the fight for the future -- what do we want to leave for the generations to come?

When people want information on massive global trends, they turn to two places -- this book and the United Nations Development Report. In fact, the book was written as a guide for the upcoming UN World Summit in Johannesburg, and is even forwarded by UN Secretary-General, Kofi A. Annan.Clearly, Kofi and the rest of the UN will have a lot to consider in Johannesburg, as many of the problems that were mentioned in _State of the World 2001_ have only gotten worse in the commercially intense and ecologically devistating -- albeit relatively short -- 365 day interim. If you are looking for the most up-to-date information on glObal food, water, health care, education and environmental trends, this is your book. Perhaps the most finely crafted information tool in our kit.General Topics Included:Science breakthroughs, climate change, politics, dysfunctional farming, world hunger (amidst plenty), rural areas, cities, ethical eating, the new chemical economy, metal poisoning, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), environmental democracy and markets, technology changes, glObal industry, development theory, environmental impacts of tourism/sustainable tourism, population, reproduction, healthy families, gender myopia, the relationship between resources and conflict, resource pillage, economic sanctions, international governance, and democratizing glObal governance.Specific Items of detailed Statistical Consideration:Infectious diseases, glObal pharmaceutical sales, legislative responses to recycling in the 1990s, greenhouse gas emissions and targets, land distribution and agribusiness lots, glObal chemical output, glObal atmospheric emissions, hotel "greening" success stories, gender disparity, Sierra Leone's Civil War, a progress report of the Rio Convention, small dams commissioned and removed in the U.S (1910-1999), regional deaths from AIDS (1990-2000), glObal average temperatures (1867-2000), glObal carbon emissions (1751-2000), carbon emission in U.S., China and Russia (1990-2000), per capita food production and commodity prices (1961-2000), world fertilizer use (1950-2000), glObal pesticide sales (1950-1999), certified organic and in-conversion land in the EU (1985-2000), toxic intensities of selected U.S. manufacturing sectors for the early 1990s, projected growth in world economy, population, and chemical production (1995-2020), international tourist arrivals (1950-2000) and projections for 2020, world population since A.D. 1 (yes, since year one!), cross-country analysis of contraceptive use and childbearing, official development assistance (1970-2000), foreign debt of developing and former Eastern Bloc nations (1970-2000), and private capital flows to developing countries (1991-2000).You might also seriously think about subscribing to World Watch magazine. As with this book, it presents glObal environmental issues in the form of highly researched articles, useful for both policymakers and an informed glObal citizenry. Common topics include natural resource use, water and air quality, climate change, and human health issues. At six issues a year for something like twenty dollars, the magazine is a steal.

An invaluable guide By DAVID-LEONARD WILLIS During the 1980s and 1990s, in an initiative led by World Neighbors in Guatemala, there were encouraging signs as farmers adopted low-cost improvements such as hedges to control erosion, crop rotation with legumes to add nitrogen to the soil, and covering the ground with vegetation year round to reduce soil and water loss, with the result that harvests jumped without the use of chemical fertilizer or pesticides as the capacity of farmers to innovate, experiment, and become the protagonists of their own development increased and they explored better ways to farm. Incomes improved, emigration to the cities declined, nutrition, health, literacy, soil quality, resistance to drought, water quality, and resistance to extreme weather conditions all improved; tree planting increased and more families were involved in local decision making. But this was in stark contrast to the type of farming that prevails in much of the world which delivers a great deal of food but wears down ecosystems while people go hungry and rural communities wither. Changing from destructive systems to regenerative or multifunctional or agroecological systems was part of the vision and goals of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit but implementation fell far short. Modern farming has increased production and lowered commodity prices but at the price of environmental and social dysfunction. When food production is the sole yardstick, it is difficult to comprehend the price paid by ignoring other criteria such chemicals in drinking water, soil erosion, food poisoning, subsidies, and mad cow disease. People pay three times for their food - at the checkout counter, for subsidies, and to clean up polluting farm practices. Often producing more food did not reduce hunger. Much of the growth in food production has been built on irrigation but at the price of pressure on water resources as described by Sandra Postel in "Pillar of Sand: Can the Irrigation Miracle Last?" The strongest evidence that our food system is dysfunctional is the fact that farmers, as a group, are the poorest people on the planet, hunger is concentrated in rural areas, worsened by poor access to safe water and sanitation. As most of the money in the food business flows to the cities and factories, a mass exodus from rural areas has resulted. In 1950 American farmers captured 50 cents on the food dollar but in 1997 it was 7 cents with most of the money going to processing, marketing, and agricultural input suppliers - a pattern mirrored around the world. How can so many remain hungry when food production soared and was ahead of population growth? This edition of State of the World, issued prior to the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in September 2002was prepared to help define the agenda by focusing on seven key areas which should be the priorities for delegates - agriculture, energy, climate change, chemicals, international tourism, population growth, resource based conflicts and global governance. In addition, this volume evaluates what has been achieved since the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio when world leaders agreed to a plan to create a sustainable global economy - one that met human needs while protecting and restoring the natural environment. Unanimous recommendations of the report "Our Common Future" established sustainable development as the central organizing principle for societies around the world. Although these recommendations were confirmed at Rio and despite two landmark global treaties on climate change and biological diversity, the world continued with business as usual. Agenda 21, a 40-chapter plan for achieving sustainable development, lacked clear implementation plans and binding legal requirements. Two questions need to be addressed - why has so little progress been made? And what must be done to ensure that the next decade is one of sustainable development and environmental progress? "The answer to the first question is both simple and complex: governments and individuals around the world are still treating issues such as population growth, the loss of biological diversity, and the build up of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere as if they were the equivalent to local air or water pollution - problems that could be solved simply by ordering the addition of control devices. Humanity has not yet shown the ability to deal with fundamental global and long-term changes in the biosphere, particularly when they require a systemic response - the creation of fundamentally different technologies, the development of new business models, and the embracing of new life styles and values."The eight chapters in this book are:- The Challenge for Johannesburg: Creating a More Secure World;- Moving the Climate Change Agenda Forward;- Farming in the Public Interest;- Reducing our Toxic Burden;- Redirecting International Tourism;- Rethinking Population, Improving Lives;- Breaking the Link Between Resources and Repression; and- Reshaping Global Governance. The 1980s was a decade of unprecedented economic growth during which over $10 trillion a year was added to the global economy but it left the number living in poverty nearly unchanged at more than 1 billion. The problem is not money but political will in dealing with problems that will come to haunt us in the years ahead. This book is invaluable in defining the problems, proposing solutions and helping each of us identify where we should try to make a difference.

In the latter part of the twentieth century, leading scientists and philosophers embarked on a remarkable venture into one of the last dark places on the intellectual map: the problem of consciousness. The quest proved more difficult than the venturers had hoped: in different ways and in different places they ran into unexpected obstacles. The dragon of consciousness seemed unslayable. Now Peter Hankins, author of the popular Conscious Entities blpg, has written this intriguing account of what went wrong, to shed light on the problems and suggest new ways forward.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. a valuable synthesis By Ides Dehaene In this well structured and illuminating text Peter Hankins (www.consciousentities.com) synthesizes the problems of the actual consciousness research, especially the famous easy and hard problem. Such a synthesis demands a familiarity with the achievements and the way of thinking of all the involved disciplines, as well as with their dogmas and specific terminology.A first lecture (there will be more) strengthens the opinion that the questions have to be reformulated if any answer or solution is expected.Recognition, as the immune system does, is a powerful concept to solve non computational problems and generate meaning; recognition is ‘the necessarily pre-formal underpinning of all knowledge’.Subjective experience has ‘haecceity’, it is specific, particular and real, but also elusive and ineffable. The reality of subjective experience comes first, before the theory that describes it.Those ideas are related to the concepts preflective self and pure experience as defined in neurophenomenology (E.Thompson: Mind in Life, M.Bitbol: www.univie.ac.at/constructivism/journal/7/3/165.bitbol) and have a great potential if we accept that there is no objectivity without subjectivity.I highly recommend this book to open minded experts as well as to ‘beginners’.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An Admirable Attempt at a Middle Way By JochenSz In the quest for consciousness, there are two easy outs: eliminativism and mysticism. Eliminativists, daunted by the seeming impossibility of fitting genuine conscious, subjective, phenomenal experience into objective, materialistic, and causal categories, propose to throw the concept out wholesale, to regard it merely as an illusion or, at best, as a confusion of language. Consciousness, they say, is merely the élan vital of our age, to be overcome with further scientific sophistication (a metaphor which, parenthetically, misses its mark: consciousness is a phenomenon to be explained, thus analogous to life itself, while élan vital was a failed explanatory hypothesis---to deny consciousness is then actually akin to answering "there's no such thing" to the question "what is life?").Mystics, on the other hand, follow to greater or lesser degree the Cartesian intuition that mind and matter are so wholly alien to one another as to stand, irreducibly, side by side, either in outright dualism or more subtle variations, with only matter being amenable to rational, scientific inquiry. Paradoxically, in proposing this, they come close to the same goal the eliminativists pursue: a world without consciousness, which has been relegated to some beyond, perhaps as a causally inert (if fantastically detailed and full-HD) epiphenomenon. The difference between the mystic and the eliminativist then boils down to whether this beyond should be thought of as 'real' or merely 'illusory'---a distinction which, since it seems to lack any appreciable impact on anything firmly of this world, whatever that denotes, one might rightfully call academic. Both camps, I think, sacrifice too much. The eliminativist risks loosing that which is ultimately closest to us, our direct acquaintance with conscious phenomena, while the mystic transports it from the midst of everyday experience off too some shadowy reach beyond the veil of ordinary reality. Both thus are merely two facets of the same kind of defeatism: an account of conscious experience in rational, naturalistic (if applicable) terms seems impossible, so neither even tries. In this respect, then, the eliminativist and the mystic are much closer to one another than perhaps either would care to admit.Peter Hankins appears likewise dissatisfied with these options, and thus, his book takes the hard route of navigating between the Scylla of eliminativism and the Charybdis of mysticism, groping for a notion of meaningful consciousness, while trying to stay in the real world, so to speak. In this, he takes an admirable, though difficult route, working against decades of calcified intuition in academic discourse. This alone would be enough for a warm recommendation, but he also manages to provide a thorough (if selective), yet remarkably clear introduction to a fiendishly difficult subject, whose clarity makes it well suited to beginners and experts alike. As a book which takes the path less travelled, it is inevitable that it takes the occasional detour and maybe even finds itself down a blind alley once in a while, and in the end, everybody will have to see for themselves whether they agree with the offered diagnosis, and the proposed treatment (such as there is). Ultimately, I feel that the dragon remains unslain, but I think we've come a little closer to the realization that yes, there is some beast out there, there is a meaningful way of being conscious without resorting to ghosts in the machine or similar spooks. As for criticism, I think that the book would have benefitted by a little more attention to formalism, especially in the sections on computation and its limits---several claims there would have gained in clarity if they had been treated in a more caredul manner. Usually, this might be grounds for deducting a star, but at this price---honestly, if you're seriously thinking about buying this book, you shouldn't even be reading this anymore.

Patel Questions about machine "intelligence" and the nature of consciousness abound, and sadly so does the proliferation of jargon and condescension which might dissuade a layperson from taking part in what will likely become essential debates of our time.Thankfully, Hankins is more than up to the task to provide a path through the wilderness. It's rather amazing how much is covered - and covered well - in this slim volume, a testament to Hankins' own command of the material and his ability to present difficult to grasp concepts like intentionality in a friendly manner. This isn't to say I necessarily agree with his conclusions - and I'd even debate him on certain historical points - but nevertheless this is a book that allows a layperson to come to the terms with what the issues are but also enjoy Hankins' own take on the matter. As he himself notes, disagreement on such profound matters is just as it should be.

Best PDF Ebook Martin Model 262 Convoy Fighter: The Naval VTOL Turboprop Project of 1950, by Jared A. Zichek

The Martin Model 262 was an unconventional turboprop VTOL aircraft proposal submitted to the US Navy's convoy fighter competition of 1950, which ultimately produced the Convair XFY-1 Pogo and Lockheed XFV-1 Salmon. It was a swept-wing aircraft with triple vertical tails powered by an Allison XT-40-A-8 turboprop engine driving 16 ft contra-rotating propellers. The launch and recovery system consisted of a hinged vertical platform mounted on a merchant ship; the pilot approached the platform from the side and hovered vertically just in front of it, attaching the aircraft to the platform with a retractable nosegear spike and landing on two small wing gear. The fighter was armed with four 20 mm cannon and was designed to protect convoy vessels from enemy air attack. In addition to the basic Model 262, Martin also presented Modifications A, B and C, the configurations of which were even more unorthodox than the main proposal. Finally, the book examines the Model 262P, a handsome scale demonstrator designed to verify the basic soundness of the concept. This 52 page publication features 56 illustrations, including detailed schematics, artist's impressions, and speculative color profiles of these remarkable secret aircraft projects. It is printed in color throughout on heavy paper stock and has a full color glossy cover. This is the publisher's second book covering the convoy fighter competition, the first one being devoted to the Goodyear GA-28A/B, which is still available from bookstores worldwide.

Not huge at just over 40 pages, but it's chock full of original material buttressed by intelligent writing. I look forward to larger volumes by this author. There is a significant amount of space dedicated to various design philosophies that made the Martin approach different from those of the other companies in the design competition.

By Stone Dog I found Alexander Ludeke's German Half-Tracks and Wheeled Vehicles wanting in regard to it's primary purpose. The book focuses only on armored wheeled and half-tracked vehicles. It's about two-thirds the size of an Osprey title and 128 pages. This is advertised as a "Fact File" book. In this case, it means each vehicle gets one or two small pages,a few paragraphs of text a couple drawings or period photos. So, it's essentially a catalog of armored half-tracks and armored cars used by the Wehrmacht during WWII with very little information about each. This is not what I was expecting. I felt a little misled by the title since it doesn't include unarmored personnel carriers and artillery tractors. It does have one good point - the author includes foreign vehicles the mainly-horse-drawn German army adopted for it's own use. I was surprised by the number of foreign-made vehicles the Germans were desperate enough to use and give a formal designation to.I didn't think the book was worth my money for what I got. If someone wanted a catalog of German wheeled or half-tracked armored vehicles, this would be a resource, but apart from that, I would not recommend this book.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Very worthwhile to have. Covers numerous variations and modifications. By Bayard B. Overall very good book on German military vehicles. The best aspect of the book is that it covers all vehicles, including some rare ones developed in the 1920s and also several types that were seized from the French, Czech, Italian, and Russian armies and modified to a greater or lesser extent for German army service. There are other books that provide more detail on specifically German vehicles such as the Sd.Kfz 250 and 251. This book covers modifications or versions of the Sd.Kfz 250 and 251 such as anti-aircraft, mortar carriers, artillery support vehicles, and anti-tank vehicles. The text discusses the design and tactical development as well as presenting technical details and performance data.
