She writes on a variety of science topics, ranging from health to wildlife conservation, has published numerous other books, and has won several awards for writing, blogging, and photography. By Deb Did you ever think that having some Madagascar hissing roaches would be hiss-terically good pets to have? Probably not and undoubtedly most parents would give a definite thumbs down if you requested them as pets. If you read all about them, you just might want to learn more about them and actually snag yourself a terrarium and observe their behaviors. Of course that terrarium would have to have a very secure top. There are some ultra-interesting facts to be learned about Madagascar hissing roaches, including the fact that the females “provide maternal care for their young.” Go figure, motherly bugs!Now if you saw creepy crawlies like those Madagascar hissing roaches in your classroom, you probably wouldn’t be at all surprised. There are a ton of things you can learn about bugs and critters of all sorts. Many kids have heard about black swallowtail butterflies and may have even read a book about raising them, but how about bessbugs? No, not bedbugs, bessbugs. They really are beautiful and are “sometimes called patent-leather beetles because they’re shiny jet-black like patent leather.”Collecting critters is one thing, but there are so many things that can be learned from them and about them. Chances are you don’t live in an area where you can forage for Madagascar hissing roaches, but you might be able to find some bessbugs under a rock or rotting log. Of course if you’re a city-dweller, there’s always the option of ordering many of the creepy crawlies discussed in this book. Before you even begin, you’ll learn all about the scientific method in order to prepare yourself for your journey as a junior scientist.Once you’ve got the scientific method down pat and understand the difference between it and a simple activity, you’re good to go. You’ll learn proper eco-friendly, ways to attract and collect your critter of choice. In this book you’ll not only learn about experiments, but also many facts about those creepy crawlies that co-exist with us. You can select from millipedes, butterflies, aphids, spiders, beetles, and yes, those Madagascar hissing roaches. Do you think a bessbug can learn to travel through a maze? You’ll just have to run an experiment using the scientific method to find out!This is an amazing hands-on book of science experiments children will love. I’ve read several books that have included some science experiments, but none quite as thorough and fun as this one. Sally Kneidel certainly knows from her work in a classroom and in the field what helps students learn. The introductory chapters introduce students to the scientific method and ways to attract and maintain them at home or in the classroom. Subsequent chapters are prefaced by an introduction, how to obtain the creepy crawlies of choice, material and housing needs, background information, behaviors, and other pertinent scientific facts followed by experiments. The book has numerous black and white photographs, line drawings,and reproducible charts and graphs. In the back of the book is an index and very comprehensible bibliography. About the Author Frank Forte has worked as an illustrator for over a decade for such houses as Cry For Dawn, Boneyard Press, and Stagefright, amongst others. Frank also wrote and illustrated the cult comic hit The Vampire Verses. In 1997, he partnered with Robert Steven Rhine to form FrankenRhine Productions. The Butt is alive!” By Kelly Garbato (Full disclosure: I received a free e-book for review through NetGalley.)3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 where necessary.My husband introduced me to BOB'S BURGERS right before the start of Season 5, and I promptly binge-watched it on Netflix in all of a week.There’s just so much to love: The burger puns, of course. (SO MANY BURGER PUNS. I may or may not do a BOB'S BURGERS theme one of these VeganMoFos.) The butts. (SO MANY BUTTS.) In Tina, a complex, fully realized teenage girl who’s neither denigrated not mocked for her love of horses, fan fic, boy bands, and (wait for it) butts. (Think of how THE FAMILY GUY treats Meg, and then imagine the complete opposite.) The evil, scheming genius that is Louise (voiced by a wonderfully screechy Kristen Schaal). Gene and his burger suit. Linda and her penchant for wine.If you’re a fan of the show, you’ll love the comic book; if you’re not a fan, you might get a kick out of the weird humor anyway, and then go DVR BOB'S BURGERS for good measure. (Sunday nights at 7:30 Eastern, yo!) Not only are the comics considered canon, but there’s quite a bit of crossover and continuity between the two (exhibit A: Boo-Boo from Boyz 4 Now).This collection (and I hope there are more!) includes Issues 1-5, each of which has the following features:* Tina’s Erotic Friend Fiction* Burger of the Day Ideas* Louise’s Unsolved Mysteries and Curious Curiosities* Letters from Linda* Gene Belcher PresentsThe humor perfectly mirrors that of the show; it’s easy to picture any one of these stories turned into a full-length episode (or, in the case of Bob and Linda’s smaller contributions, featured as a gag). Just as with the show, I have a pretty strong preference for Tina’s Erotic Friend Fic (Battleship Galac-tina, I would watch the crap out of you), Louise’s Unsolved Mysteries (“Louise’s Legacy,” you give me feelings), and Bob’s Burger of the Day Ideas (book-inspired burgers for the win!).The collection also includes a number of issue covers and pin-up art, all of which are hella fun – colorful, visually striking, and just generally in keeping with the aesthetic of the show. All it’s missing is Gayle and a new installation of her animal butt art.

Fun and silly must have for Bobs Burgers fans By James Jessee's crazy world I haven't read comic books in many many years, but loving this show, I felt the need to reintroduce myself.This collection really captures the spirit and unique humor and style of the show, but it's easy to forget these are just quick comic stories and sometimes they seem to end quicker and more suddenly than expected. But a fun and silly collection that can help ease the addiction or withdrawal periods between binge watching every season, again.

By Wag The Fox Once upon a time I was a fan of Brendon Small’s animated series, ‘Home Movies,’ which was a love letter to just how effed up childhood could be while still finding a metric ton of joy with friends and family. H. Jon Benjamin voiced Coach McGirk on that show, and with a voice like his I've been drawn to any show in which he stars. Enter ‘Bob’s Burgers.’When the show debuted a few years back and that indelible, gruff voice rang out for Bob, I was pretty much a fan from the word go. All the better was the fact the series taps into the same vein of dry humor and absurdism that made ‘Home Movies’ so great, but this series is much more polished and a broader scope with regards to character and plot.So when I heard there was a comic book series too, my interest was piqued.The thing is that the comic book series doesn’t have a format resembling anything like the TV series. Rather than a solitary storyline followed along in traditional fashion, each issue is broken up into five sections, one for each member of the Belcher family. With that approach, each issue feels more like a collection of vignettes spotlighting each character. An interesting approach, but the payoff was lacking in parts.While Tina, the eldest daughter, steals the show in each issue through her wildly imaginative (and mildly erotic at times) fan-fic, Bob actually gets short shrift in each issue with his meager offerings appearing as custom-made burger menus. It's a nice nod to the recurring gag on the show, but it's such a let down when the title character o the series is barely an interlude in each issue.At the end of the day, the book serves better as a coffee table book than a graphic novel. The artwork holds true to the TV series, what stories are in its pages can enjoyed in no time flat, and ultimately the book feels more like a companion piece for collectors and fans of the show. If you're a die-hard fan of the show, you'll want to check it out, but if you've never seen the show before, then you're better off skipping it.

But he's not taken seriously. So he uses talent. And one of talent is disguise, so he disguised himself as a girl. So he got the job or she got the job. But was this reality look was by the right dress, padded, and enough make up. Or was it something else, some advance technology, chemistry. Why would want to change your sex. Was something inside that modern science haven't found or discovered.

The exhibition challenged the rigid distinctions between history, anthropology, science, and the arts. It showed that object-centered inquiry inevitably leads to a questioning of categories within and beyond history.Tangible Things is both an introduction to the range and scope of Harvard's remarkable collections and an invitation to reassess collections of all sorts, including those that reside in the bottom drawers or attics of people's houses. It interrogates the nineteenth-century categories that still divide art museums from science museums and historical collections from anthropological displays and that assume history is made only from written documents. About the Author Laurel Thatcher Ulrich taught for fifteen years at University of New Hampshire before moving to Harvard in 1995. Ivan Gaskell held positions at the Warburg Institute, Cambridge University, and Harvard before moving to the Bard Graduate Center in 2012. His work on material culture addresses intersections among history, art history, anthropology, and philosophy. He is the author, editor, or co-editor of eleven books, and has contributed to numerous journals and edited volumes in history, art history, and philosophy.Sara J. Schechner is the David P. Wheatland Curator of the Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments at Harvard University, where is she is part of the history of science department and has taught museum studies. She recently received the Joseph H. Hazen Education Prize (2008) of the History of Science Society for a career of innovative and diverse object-based teaching. She lives in a historic house on the National Register and has an archaeological site in her back yard. Sarah Anne Carter is the curator of the Chipstone Foundation and the Chipstone Fellow in Material Culture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She was previously a lecturer on history and literature at Harvard University. Her research has been supported by several grants, and she has published essays in The History of Photography, The History of Childhood and Youth, and The Museum History Journal. Samantha van Gerbig is curatorial technician of the Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments at Harvard University.

By Gretchen Woodman I am very excited to have this book, but the copy I received is defective. The pages in the book are in the following order: 1-22, 15-22, 39-46, 39-216. PAGES 22-38 are completely missing! Very bizarre defect! I wrote to the publisher yesterday and got an automated message that I would hear back from them in 24 hours. I have not heard yet, buy I may........ I do not mind keeping the book, but I would like to get the missing pages.I am afraid that the whole print run may be defective, so I am hesitant to order another copy right now.

By Fuad R Qubein Fuad Qubein 7:37 PM (15 hours ago)THE conquest of Spain in the early 8th century was just another addition to the vast empire of the Arab Khalifs which stretched from India to North Africa. The invasion was swift and efficient and the resistance was negligible. But the gains were spectacular and the whole conquest was considered a jewel in the crown of the Khalifs in Damascus. But this impressive conquest was only the beginning of an unusual period for both the Spaniards and the occupying Arabs. The overriding question in the mind of a reader would be: How do you assimilate two distant people with differences in religion, language, customs, traditions, and philosophies?Surprisingly, in spite of the huge gap between the two people, the whole period of occupation (over 700 years!) was in fact a glorious time for both nations, except for a short and sad ending. The author attributed this mainly to the wisdom and tolerance of the Arab occupiers. Much like Murad of the Osmanllis (of the Ottoman Empire) in Eastern Europe, the first Arab Sultan in Spain, Abd- er Rahman I, was exemplary - "his meekness,his generosity,and his love of justice became proverbial". His grandson, Abd-er-Rahman III, was even more tolerant and compromising and won the title "The Great". Both of these outstanding sultans brought up Spain to glorious heights! Cordova, their capital, became the most outstanding city in Europe. It became renowned for its science, art, literature, medicine, architecture and engineering. Students came from all over to improve their knowledge. The grandeur of its mosques, palaces, mansions, gardens, hydraulic systems ... became the wonders of the time and were visited by tourists from far away lands. When this writer went recently to Cordova and Granda he was amazed to see how well all these magnificent structures are preserved after more than seven centuries. For sure, these remain Spain's greatest tourist attractions, and a continuous source of income.It would be a mistake, however, to assume that life was smooth and peaceful throughout the period of occupation. Raids into the Christian north went on and vice versa. In-fighting among the Berbers, the Arabs and Christian groups was frequent. Although some Christian youth learned Arabic and excelled yet some extremists rejected the Islamic occupation and resorted to suicides to express their anger. The Arab kadis tried in vain to dissuade them saying: We gave you your freedom of worship and your churches, and we never interfered in your daily lives. What else do you want?Gradually however, the Arabs' unity started to fade away while the Christians were getting stronger and their attacks more deadly. Efforts to reach an equitably peace failed and fighting grew bloodier. Arabs were given a choice of either to convert to Christianity or leave the country. Millions were driven out in miserable conditions and their properties were confiscated. It was a shameful move. Those Arabs who brought prosperity and glory to Spain for so many centuries were finally banished. Sadly, the Spaniards did not realise that they had actually "killed the golden goose".

Koch I came to this book because I was watching the Spanish TV series, 'Isabel', and I wanted some background to the campaign against the Moors. This study was written during the nineteenth century, but it still sparkles with knowledge and insight. A reader comes away with a sense of sorrows, that an amazing civilization was destroyed, in part by the Reconquest, but also because of bitter internal conflicts. Having read this short, but skilfully written account of the Moors in Spain, I felt that I understood the final episodes of 'Isabel', which depicts the factionalism within the Alhambra. While the idea of a united Spain seems thoroughly modern, the price paid at the expense of the Moors and the Jews was horrific. Of particular interest was the short chapter on El Cid, that warrior figure who is wrapped in myth and legend. Lane-Poole's vivid writing brought a complex period to life.

His influence over the game, however, was not always viewed as beneficial. Under his watch, dozens of college and high school players were killed or maimed on the gridiron. President Theodore Roosevelt urged him to reform football to prevent administrators from banning it, but Camp was ambivalent about removing the very physicality that made the game man-making in his eyes. 1 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Highly Academic Thesis on 19th Century Masculinity and American Football. By Mark As an amateur historian (and passionate fan) of 19th century American Football I eagerly awaited the release of this book, purchasing it on the first day of release. Unfortunately I couldn't be more disappointed. The writing style is so academic that it was a chore to get through the first chapter. The author is definitely not a sports writer nor is her target audience the typical football fan. This book instead read like a college thesis paper on 19th century masculinity with historical football facts sprinkled throughout. The author is clearly highly educated and conducted a significant amount of research for this book. She should be applauded for going through all the Walter Camp papers, which are on 50+ reels of microfiche. However the end result is a book without a story, devoid of the very excitement and thrill this wonderful sport generates.

Jimenez and Isanove may be the best there is at what they do By Luis Dmaz With all due respect, Jimenez and Isanove may be the best there is at what they do... when they stick to doing what they know how to do best (ie. illustrating). Both of their incursions into writing here feel so lacking that I struggled to get to the end of the two stories included in this volume. A true savage-ly missed opportunity on Marvel's part to pair these very talented artists with equally talented writers for superb results. At least the art is solid (for the most part).

The perfect gift idea By Jared I wasn't sure what to get my daughter for Christmas this year: she had pretty much everything she needed from her grandparents, mom, etc. She has enjoyed watching the X-Men movies and, clearly, Wolverine is a stand-out character. When the idea of this book was suggested to me, it was the perfect gift idea! Third in "Rogues" series - Great time-travel read By Mary Jane Kail This is 3rd in the series & I wasn't sure I would like this book when I first started it. I mean...a modern-day princess & an outlaw? Doesn't sound all that great to me. Well, I was wrong.In this series, like the first three, a book, "Rogues Across Time" is the instrument that propels one of the main characters either forward or backward in time.This time Noel Giraudeau, after buying the book & seeing a drawing of Wolfe Longwalker, seeks more information about him. She finds that he was hanged for killing a family of homesteaders.Noel is convinced after finding herself in 1896 Arizona that she was sent back to prevent his hanging.Again, as with the first two of this series, the ending is quite different & unexpected.If you like time-travel, I think you will enjoy this book.

Once you get past the impossibility of time travel and implausibility of a modern-day princess and 1876 native American/halfbreed, the romance in this book just plain -DID- work. The sparks that flew off these two and their mutual attraction and admiration were entirely plausible, as were the obstacles they had to overcome (given the willing suspension of disbelief of time travel). The authors research into the geographical setting and the Dineh/Navajo added necessary realism to anchor this story and make it feel real.A surprise ending that I won't spoil ... a rare 'to be continued' almost for a Harlequin romance. Entirely satisfied with my investment of time and money to read this book.

About the Author Dr. Michael Harris is one of the founders of San Francisco Voice for Israel, which is now the Bay Area chapter of StandWithUs. Founded in 2004, SF Voice for Israel has countered anti-Israel demonstrations, to provide the public and the media with an alternative to the lies being promoted by organizations such as International ANSWER and Jewish Voice for Peace. It has also done proactive public outreach at community events and brought pro-Israel speakers to the Bay Area. As part of StandWithUs, founded in 2001, the group is now part of a worldwide Israel education organization with chapters across the US as well as in Europe and Australia. In his role with the group, Dr. Harris has made appearances on radio shows (both in the US and in Israel) and television news reports as a local spokesperson, countering misinformation about Israel. He’s given speeches to large groups at synagogues, churches, political organizations and senior citizen centers throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. In addition, he’s been in the trenches, standing up for Israel against anti-Israel demonstrators on the streets of San Francisco and Oakland for nearly a decade. In his spare time, he is a pediatrician in Marin County, California.

Surbeck Dr. Mike Harris (he's a real MD, not a doctor in philosohpy) just published this little gem of a book that everyone with even the most remote interest in Israel advocacy will absolutely want to get a copy of right now. The title may sound like a tad ambitious, but Mike knows what he's talking about. As one of the leaders of pro-Israel activism in the Bay Area, one of the nation's worst den of brainwashed leftists, he's come face-to-face on more than one occasion with what he refers to clinically (he's a doc, after all) as PIDS, i.e. People with Israel Derangement Syndrome. Good diagnostic, doc!As a result, his book is filled with information and sensible advice on how to handle some of the most common situations that pro-Israel activists find themselves in when confronting PIDS either in our country or in Canada. The depth of Mike's knowledge of history will impress you, and you will find yourself reading his book as others would enjoy a fine liqueur. If you have kids in college, order as many copies as you need and send them this book right now. Even if they're not directly involved in pro-Israel activities on campus, it will give them (or reinforce) an identification to Israel and maybe give them the knowledge they need to stand up to their own PIDS (who as we know tend to live and multiply in higher numbers in academia than in the real world). Kudos to Dr. Mike for a remarkable job!

A Necessary Corrective By Carlos Laflauta Dr. Harris has written an important and comprehensive refutation of the growing trend to “solve” the Middle East conflict by demonizing only one side, Israel. With numerous examples from history and from the present day he shows that the reality is far more complex, and that Palestinian obstruction of the peace process is often overlooked. He points out that Israel made several peace offers to the Palestinians that they refused, the most notorious in 2000 when instead of even proposing a counteroffer Yasser Arafat responded to Israel’s overture of peace by starting a bloody war that lasted five years.Harris notes that by their own rhetoric and behavior, Palestinians have shown that their agenda is not peaceful coexistence with Israel but rather Israel’s elimination. The refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish state, the insistence on a “right of return” that would turn Israel into a second Palestinian state, the repeated attacks on civilians within recognized Israel (inside the “Green Line”) including suicide bombings and thousands of rockets launched at Israel’s population centers, all exemplify a Palestinian intention of wiping out Israel entirely. This is why one cannot understand this conflict simply through the lens of “occupation,” as important as that is. Harris points out that Israel’s ending the occupation of Gaza resulted in rocket attacks from Gaza that continue to this day. Ending the occupation of the West Bank without producing a similar and even more dangerous escalation of violence against cities within Israel’s heartland is a problem that cannot be solved until Palestinian intentions are reformed, and that cannot happen as long as blame is cast only upon Israel.Harris comes out strongly for the two-state solution, and observes that many of Israel’s critics do not. The “BDS” movement (boycott, divestment, and sanctions) has indicated in its official statements that its agenda is Israel’s elimination. It is an immoral agenda couched in the language of morality. The fact is that without Israel, Jews living in the Middle East would be subject to persecution by the Arab majority as they have been for generations. The real racism, Harris notes, is the insistence that of all the world’s nationalities, Jews are the only one that does not deserve the right to self-determination.Harris’s “30 second” answer to Israel’s critics sums it up nicely:“We’re here today to stand up for Israel’s right to exist as the state of the Jewish people. Israel wants peace, but it’s facing enemies who call for its elimination and who launch rockets at millions of Israeli civilians. Israel has offered a Palestinian state but has been answered with calls for jihad and genocide.”Indeed, Palestinian anti-Jewish incitement, including even Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas publicly labeling Jews as “dirty” and “filthy” and joining completely false accusations against Israel of plotting to attack Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem, has been going on for many years and is a largely unreported but highly significant cause of the current violence. How can the Palestinian people ever accept peace with Israel if their leaders consistently refuse to prepare them for it, instead feeding the frenzy of anti-Jewish hatred that has existed for centuries in the Muslim world?Harris’s book will help prepare those who know that making Israel uniquely responsible for the problems in the Middle East is wrong but who don’t quite know what to say. Harris accomplishes this with both clarity and a very engaging and entertaining sense of humor. It used to be the Arab side that pushed for more “even-handed” policies and presentations. Harris puts to the test how “even-handed” Israel’s critics are willing to be. It’s about time.

Instant Motivation and Inspiration By Tony Robson The book has really helped me create goals in the important areas of my life and develop a vision for my life. The author made me realize that we all want to achieve certain goals and aspirations, but very few of us are willing to take action and develop a plan to get it done. I am a huge fan of self-help, from Tony Robbins to Dale Carnegie, and it seems this author has used some concepts from the best and put his own unique twist on it. Overall great practical advice that anyone can use RIGHT NOW. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This book covers some basic sports psychology principals but translation issues mar the overall quality of the book By Scott D. Rushing This book is not very well written in my opinion. A huge distraction for me is in the language used. Perhaps there was a poor translation done to the digital version (which is what I purchased) but the digital version is full of broken sentences and poor grammar such as "Close your eye and float of your body" or "I work a lot of businesses and athletes...". If you can get past the grammar related issues, which are distracting, the principles presented by the author are fairly basic and I don't agree with his assessment that "if you take the same actions as someone succeeding, you will get the same results". I think recognizing the successful characteristics of someone who has had success is a tool that can help someone want to improve their performance, but just because you take the same steps they take doesn't mean you will achieve the same results.They author does stress to not focus on what you don't want to have happen because it creates a negativity and a focus on what we don't want to happen, and he stressed having a positive attitude and controlling your physical body with breathing and tension. So he does discuss some critical strategies for success but I think overall that's done in a simplistic way and without a lot of in-depth explanation or strategies to help the reader improve on those things.

The author explains the mindset of psychology behind being successful and what peak performance is. Having a positive attitude is important along with self discipline to attain your goals. What I found interesting is how to make your own body more effective, even for a business person. It is also very important to stay focused on your goals. At the end of each chapter their are exercises to complete to help with performance, these are very helpful.

For instance, the author advises that instead of getting professional photographer, we can also tap those photography students because they offer the same quality services at lower rates.
