Sadly I am not rich. So I go to Amazon and browse their free book selections. Thinking about this is probably not very wise because I have been hooked into buying additional books in a series.Ninja: The Ultimate Guide To The Secret History Of The Ninja is worth 0.99c as of the writing of this review. I am not going to be so crass as to write and it's worth every bit I pay for it. Because dear lost soul, it is very informative about ninjas and Wayne Li is clearly passionate about the subject. I didn't find it dry dull read. I don't know if I could use the information to become a ninja but I did learn quite a bit about ninjas. It is also quite short yet really informative and accurate.Overall, it was a good read.

The Grand Spas of Central Europe leads readers on an irresistible tour through the grand spa towns of Central Europe—fabled places like Baden-Baden, Bad Ems, Bad Gastein, Karlsbad, and Marienbad. Noted historian David Clay Large follows the grand spa story from Greco-Roman antiquity to the present, focusing especially on the years between the French Revolution and World War II, a period in which the major Central European Kurorte (“cure-towns”) reached their peak of influence and then slipped into decline. Written with verve and affection, the book explores the grand spa towns, which in their prime were an equivalent of today’s major medical centers, rehab retreats, golf resorts, conference complexes, fashion shows, music festivals, and sexual hideaways—all rolled into one. Conventional medicine being quite primitive through most of this era, people went to the spas in hopes of curing everything from cancer to gout. But often as not “curists” also went to play, to be entertained, and to socialize. In their heyday the grand spas were hotbeds of cultural creativity, true meccas of the arts. High-level politics was another grand spa specialty, with statesmen descending on the Kurorte to negotiate treaties, craft alliances, and plan wars. This military scheming was just one aspect of a darker side to the grand spa story, one rife with nationalistic rivalries, ethnic hatred, and racial prejudice. The grand spas, it turns out, were microcosms of changing sociopolitical realities—not at all the “timeless” oases of harmony they often claimed to be. The Grand Spas of Central Europe holds up a gilt-framed but clear-eyed mirror to the ever-changing face of European society—dimples, warts, and all.

The Grand Spas of Central Europe: A History of Intrigue, Politics, Art, and Healing, by David Clay Large

Review With scintillating wit and a storyteller's élan, David Large is the perfect guide to the colorful history of Europe's spa culture. This is serious scholarship leavened with delicious gossip about spa celebrities, from Beethoven and Tolstoy to Karl Marx and Mark Twain. (Adrienne Mayor, author of The Poison King and The Amazons)In this learned, thoroughly researched, and elegant study, the distinguished Central European historian David Large begins our grand tour of spas with Greek and Roman bathing rituals, carrying his fascinating story into the turn of the twentieth century. (John Merriman, Charles Seymour Professor of History, Yale University)There is no better, more mischievous, more companionable guide to German history than David Clay Large. Once again he has written a book that draws on deep expertise, deep research, a keen knowledge of social texture, and yet reads like a guilty pleasure. The history of the spas reveals modern Europeans wrapped only in towels. (David Quammen, author of The Song of the Dodo and Spillover)This absorbing book is just as diverting and delightful as the places it chronicles once were. Large writes with verve and style, and he knows how to put vivid characters and vignettes to the service of important historical points. An altogether arresting and rewarding overview of modern European history through an unconventional and entertaining lens. (Peter Hayes, Northwestern University)The Grand Spas of Central Europe leads an irresistible tour through the grand spas of Central Europe, tracing their history from classical antiquity to the present but focusing on the spas’ heyday between the French Revolution and World War II. Noted historian David Clay Large vividly shows that fabled “cure-towns” like Baden-Baden, Bad Gastein, and Karlsbad were not just important centers of healing (or attempted healing), but also hotbeds of artistic creation, nests of social intrigue, and gilded venues for high-level politicking.

About the Author David Clay Large is a senior fellow at the Institute of European Studies, University of California, Berkeley, and professor of history at the Fromm Institute, University of San Francisco. He has also taught at Smith College, Yale University, and Montana State University. Among his many books are Berlin, Nazi Games: The Olympics of 1936, and Munich1972: Tragedy, Terror, and Triumph at the Olympic Games. Large divides his time between San Francisco and Bozeman, Montana.

De Nike The European spa stands in the popular (especially American) consciousness at a crossroads somewhere between edenic retreat and tawdry fleshpot - the former characterized by royal patronage and ostentatious display of the finest offerings in music and fashion, the latter by debauchery, gambling, and phony medical cures.Respected historian David Large’s latest volume offers a welcome serving on both fronts. The focus is on Central Europe with its storied names of Bad Ischl, Karlsbad, and Marienbad featured, but Baden-Baden, Bad Ems, and Wiesbaden receive nearly equal attention.Following a rough historical sequence, Large divides his chapters covering the glittering literary figures who found the waters irresistible, and the imperial families of Europe drawn to the bath's supposed remedial properties - but who also couldn’t resist the opportunity for diplomacy and intrigue. Calling on his bottomless knowledge of European history, Large adroitly blends his spa-story with the behind the scenes account of events preceding WWI.Freud, Nietzsche, even Marx, make their appearances at Marienbad and other “Kurorte” during the years between 1870 and 1914 - the era when the spas truly reached their apogee of popularity. (In contrast, you have the decidedly jaundiced perspective of Mark Twain, who declared Baden-Baden unbearable after a week’s residence.)Perhaps the book’s signal chapter is devoted to the spas' fate during the Nazi era: “Brown Waters” As with all else in the Third Reich, the grand resorts did not escape political exploitation. At first Hitler exhibited an anti-spa stance, but softened when tempted by the proceeds from gambling, especially among foreign visitors. Then, in the war years they provided convenient billeting sites for the Wehrmacht. In the background, the wistful murmurs of the many Jewish patrons can be heard from the years before Nazi anti-semitism had effectively barred their custom. This unique work serves to fill a void in the historical record, one centered on place not person. It is difficult to imagine any author with the talent for research (demonstrated in his numerous previous books) attempting and succeeding on the scale that Large has when it comes to this comprehensive history.Howard J. De Nike, Anthropology Lecturer, University of San Francisco

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Large proves once again that professional historians can write brilliant syntheses with a broad public appeal By C. McClelland Grand Spas takes us for a grand dip into a fascinating (now largely vanished) world of the leisure and health habits of the (mostly) wealthier and well-connected classes of European and American society from the 18th through the 20th centuries. Although there were “baths” (and “springs”) in many other parts of Europe and even the USA, in Central Europe they reached a special pinnacle of sophistication and attractiveness in the nineteenth century. Concentrating on the most famous of these (such as Baden-Baden, Ems or Wiesbaden in Germany, Gastein in Austria or Marienbad in today’s Czech Republic) David Large delivers a highly readable, amusing and well-researched history not only of the spas but of the royals, aristocrats, statesmen, oligarchs and even ordinary middle-class visitors who flocked to them. Following the thread of the “cure”, he manages also to serve up a social and economic history, a convincing picture of an early and fashionable form of summertime vacation activity justified by “doctors’ orders”, and even vignettes from the history of literature and the arts (many spa guests were deeply involved in them and sometimes performed). Many other topics get attention, from casino gambling to match- and deal-making and sex amid the (often) foul-smelling waters. Even though they fell on hard times after World War I, the spas continued to soldier on (despite the rise of much more effective scientific medicine) and may be even experiencing a revival today as places to get away from urban stress. Large proves once again that professional historians can write brilliant syntheses with a broad public appeal.

You'll be surprised how much useful information is in the book that you can apply to your life. Who knew sound was so important and could have such an impact on our life and health.I picked up the book and read it straight-through. A big surprise as I didn't expect it to be so compelling. It was! I find myself now going back through the book when I want to "change my sound environment" or need a pick me up for a run. I try to choose music/sound based on what my needs are (focus, inspiration, creativity, relax, health) at that particular moment in my life. It's so easy to change my sounds/music when I need to: close a window for silence, take a walk and listen to the environment, change the beat during a workout. There's a whole section on children and how to use sound in their lives to create a more harmonious life experiennce, whether it be more focus in school, calming a hyper child, special needs, ADHD, Austism, etc...Some really effective tips on making homework time less a frustration for the parent! We are all aging and the research behind using sound/music to maintain and repair brain health is solid. The authors share great ideas on how to reduce or eliminate those "senior moments" by using vibration, melody, and tone to sharpen our minds, and mitigate the effects of illness and other challenges of aging. You can take charge and profoundly influence the quaity of your mental health, physical, and psychological functioning in later life with the use of sound.I'm just scratching the surface here. Tons of other useful material in the book. Definitley not a struggle to get the through the book. You'll carry it around as a reference for years to come. I liked it so much, I ended up getting the enhanced version (Itunes) as well, as it has over 70 active links in the book. So cool to be reading about a type of music or sound, and have the ability to click on a link in your e-reader and actually experience what the authors are talking about. You'll LOVE this book!Note: I checked around and it seems the enhanced version will be available on Kindle Fire in the near future. In the meantime, you can get it through Itunes for your Ipad on Ibook.

It affects us more than I was aware. Was able to make some quick adjustments to my environment which have made a big difference. Book was VERY entertaining and enjoyable. None of the chapters sprawl on forever. It moves fast and provides plenty of fun, relative links to music and videos. LOVED IT!!

Every parent should know how stimulate their child's development with sounds. Every child should know how to soothe their aging parent. Every person should know the power of sound in their own life. This book makes these events easy to achieve. The book itself is full of those experiences as sound literally rises from the pages and engages the reader in a journey towards wisdom & health. Our own healing occurs as we read. Thanks to the authors for a job brilliantly done!

America Divided: The Civil War of the 1960s, by Maurice Isserman, Michael Kazin

Review "An impressive achievement. The most comprehensive, comprehensible history of the American 1960s that I know."--Todd Gitlin, New York University"When two accomplished historians of the caliber of Isserman and Kazin turn their talents to a survey of the Sixties, the result is an engrossing narrative and a highly intelligent analysis of the era's cultural, political, and social events. I found myself eagerly turning pages to see how theywould handle the decade's key actors, moments, and trends, and was always rewarded with judicious and insightful treatments."--Lizabeth Cohen, Harvard University"America Divided is an indispensable history of the 1960s. Isserman and Kazin grapple with the abundant paradoxes of an era of youthful activism and resurgent conservatism, of sexual revolution and religious revival, of naive political optimism and growing distrust in government. Their compellingnarrative helps make sense of the most contentious political and cultural debates of our time."-- Thomas J. Sugrue, University of Pennsylvania"America Divided: The Civil War of the 1960s is a riveting read, brimming with lively anecdotes, original insights, sharp analysis, and scrupulous scholarship. It is, far and away, the most compelling single volume history of the 1960s currently available. A superb book."--Douglas Brinkley, University of New Orleans"This is the finest and most comprehensive history of The Sixties ever written. Professors Isserman and Kazin skillfully combine insightful analysis and captivating narrative to demonstrate how and why that political and cultural civil war haunts us yet. Their book is therefore more than anotherhistory: it is an act ofengaged citizenship."--Nelson Lichtenstein, University of Virginia "An impressive achievement. A good book for the introduction of quantum mechanics By J.Jianfeng The chapter of application to biology misses the application of quantum tunneling in microscopy, and some recent discoveries of quantum effects in cells, e.g. quantum entanglement in neuron cells.

It's somewhat standalone, though it really helps to know Rocket's background (particularly his comic origins) Moods swing between endearing, funny, and ass kicking; it's a good mix though there's a fair bit of violence and (censored) swearing, so probably not for little ones. Would make a worthwhile gift for any teen or older that's into the character.

By Anarchy in the US Ever since the release of 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, Disney/Marvel had had a wealth of success off of the rag-tag team only selective fans knew about for years. And with success, it means way more Guardians to sell the image further beyond the confines of simply being a team. Case in point is Rocket Raccoon and Groot, arguably the two biggest hits of the film with Star-Lord right behind them. Who wouldn't enjoy a crazy talking raccoon and a lovable talking tree? Well, beyond their mega pop culture status now, both Rocket and Groot have had their share of enjoyable stories together over the years (pick up the Rocket Raccoon & Groot: The Complete Collection for example), so giving them their own on-going comic series is a no-brainer (yes, it's predominantly about Rocket and it has his name on the cover, but Groot tags along everywhere Rocket goes). And for the most part, this is one fun series.Collecting issues #1-6, these are the adventures of the aptly named raccoon when he is off duty and not saving the universe with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Currently Rocket is just on a date with an alien girl watching his friend/companion/muscle/houseplant Groot in a wrestling match and all of a sudden, Rocket is wanted for murder. It seems another raccoon is going around killing people that looks just like Rocket and since he is the last of his kind in the universe, everyone thinks Rocket is the culprit. Now on the run from the law, Rocket has to clear his name from this imposter raccoon, while a shadowy organization is in the background following Rockets every movement. That organization? His ex-girlfriends!Thanks to the works of Hawkeye and Daredevil since Marvel NOW!, the company has done a great job at giving more humor and lighter-toned comics in the market place. Ms.Marvel, Secret Avengers, She-Hulk, Squirrel Girl, Superior Foes of Spider-Man, and even the Legendary Star-Lord are examples of this. Rocket Raccoon is another title worthy of that list and is probably the most extreme of the bunch - and that's a good thing.Skottie Young has made a name for himself with his incredibly cartoony variant covers in Marvel, as well as his art work on Oz Omnibus. But as writer, the only thing he's done thus far is Young Marvel: Little X-Men, Little Avengers, Big Trouble. And just like his Young Marvel, the guy can write extremely great humor to match his extremely Looney Tunes-like art work. Young's version of Rocket has tidbits of his usual gun tooting self, but this is his own version of the character not like the film or normal comic versions. He does everything to the extreme in this series to mouthing off, cursing, drinking, killing (hey he keeps count of his kills!), fraternizing with women, and quoting various pop-culture references in movies, music, and general stuff. Sure there's a plot going on with the look-a-like raccoon and armada of ex-girlfriends (you'll see what I mean), but this series revels in its humor and visual design that is akin to Looney Tunes. Everything from running away into a sewer, to go-to and breaking out of jail at the same time, to fighting a whole army of war ships, jumping across the galaxy looking for treasure from a treasure map, and just helping his talking-dog friend, Cosmo, into an investigation of missing robots. This is just crazy and fun stuff. And while issues #1-4 makes up the prime story arc in this volume, issues 5 and 6 are stand-alone stories. Issue #5 is a "I am Groot" tale that Groot actually gives a story to some campers. Because all Groot can say is "I am Groot", the entire tale is said with various expressions of the phrase with the pictures showcasing the characters intent behind the phrase. It's brilliant storytelling as it makes readers diagnose the panels intently on what is going on and shows Youngs great art that a story can be cleverly displayed with the same phrase "I am Groot".Which is one of the reasons why I picked up this book is Young's incredible art work. Tons of stylish detail, numerous little winks and nods in the backgrounds you have to take your time to see (including Jason Arron's Southern Bastards and Neil Gaiman's Sandman series). There is a ton of stuff to look for that Young doesn't disappoint in design. As I already mentioned about issue #5's art style, another big example is Rocket and Groot breaking out of jail in a two-page spread montage sequence that has both characters crawling, shooting, swimming, and digging through a maze-design that begins with "Start" from the lower left corner of the page and you follow the maze through great detail until the very top-right hand side that says "End". This is just amazingly fun art work and pushes the art narrative to extremes.I simply have mentioned Jake Parker picks up the slack on art for issue #5 and does issue #6 reasonably well. It may not be Youngs art, but it does bold well with the tone of the series. So here are the problems I have and explain the 4 stars. Get beyond the crazy humor and insane art, Young's writing is mediocre. All the energy in the first two issues dyes out by issue 3 and 4 and close out the fake raccoon/ex-girlfriends arc in a anti-climatic way, as well as odd reasoning for the villains purpose. Don't get me wrong, Young does show signs of deeper meaning in one page where Rocket breaks down his outer loud-mouth self and cries, yet most of the book is tucked away in 99% of humor to hide the plot. And issues 5 and 6 are stand-alone tales. So I don't know if Young can continue to keep the energy of the series going for long, as well as giving it some plot to maintain itself.Either way, ROCKET RACCOON VOL.1: A CHASING TAIL is one heck on an enjoyable and great looking comic. If you're looking for a hell of a fun time with the Guardians film breakout characters, this is a good opening volume. I don't know if this series can continue on in the same demeanor though for Rocket Raccoon Volume 2. Still a fun pick up.

Painted hardcover with a digital download copy. There are also 4 pages of alternate covers as extras. The digital download looks great, allowing you to read page by page or panel by panel. Zoom is also supported on any element. Skottie Young's artwork looks great with focus on the details, especially his covers. After the hit movie, Guardians of the Galaxy, Rocket stars in his own series for the first time since the 80s, and that was a 4-issue limited series.Skottie Young writes all six issues and does art duties on 1-5, with Jake Parker on 5 and 6. The first arc intertwines two threads. First, Rocket is wanted but insists there is someone else out there perpetrating these crimes that looks just like him. The fact that he's always bragging that he's the last of his kind is used against him. The second thread deals with an armada of ex-girlfriends that are looking to even the score. (Chasing Tail ;)The covers are amazing! The art and colors are great (if you like skottie young's style, of course). The writing is fun, but probably not for young kids (there's some racy sub-text in a few places). Young does a good job of capturing Rocket's scarcasm and love of big guns that go boom from Abnett & Lanning and James Gunn. Issue #5 takes the "I am Groot" joke to the extreme, probably a bit too far.

Sex, Drugs, Violence, Science (Spoiler Free Review) By AcidBot PLOT- In short this is a science fiction piece about the fate of mankind that has built an underwater city to escape the sun's expanding supernova.ACTION/PACING- Lots of action, fighting and it kept the pace going strong. You will want to read this in one sitting. I tried to, but was pulled away by other engagements. LOW earns it's M rating for tons of fighting, gore, sex, and drug use that you will want more and more of. Orgies, psychedelics, and dismemberment? (not all in one scene, that'd be gross) What else do you need?STORY- This is a volume 1 and much of the beginning is getting the reader introduced to the word and to the characters. Once we get a bearing of the story, it moves along rapidly and keeps the reader engaged. The word that is created surrounds everything and is something I love about Remender. If you love interesting worlds and creatures, you will like this. In fact, if you liked Black Science, just stop reading now and go get this. I liked Black Science more, but they had a more fun concept to play with.ART- I loved the art of this book and I know some people haven't so here we go. A common complaint I've seen is that the art work is "blurred" or "sketchy" (as in art, not dubious) and at times, it is. The artwork is still gorgeous and to be honest I spent more time admiring it than I do most modern comics. For a comic about the dark depths of the ocean/sea this works very well in my opinion. As the depths of the sea still remain a mystery it feels right to have it drawn as such. Does every image need to be drawn with clean crisp outlines to get the message across? For scenes like explosions, orgies, and the ocean floor, I don't think so. It works to get the point in the eyes/mind of the reader and sets the mood in doing so.Don't judge this based upon its art style, it works for the genre and setting of this story. Sin City is heavily stylized in black/white because it is noir. Eddie Campbell's sketch-y rendition of From Hell adds to the bleak and dreariness of London during the Jack the Ripper killings. Charles Schulz's simplicity and expression add to the charm of Peanuts. The art of Greg Tocchini is not strictly modern comic book style art, at least not in LOW. /rant [sorry]RECOMMEND IF YOU LIKE- Black Science and Deadly Class- Hey, it's Rick Remender. Also Pacific since its all... water-y.TL;DR- good action, not modern comic book style [but still great], interesting and enveloping world, if you liked Black Science, get this.

Unrealized ambition (3.5 stars) By Alt For quite a long time, humans have lived in domed underwater cities to escape the radiation of a sun gone supernova. Probes sent to discover a new habitable planet have so far found zilch. For generations, the hunters of Salus have left their city in a whale-shaped submarine to go hunting for squid and mammoths and other yummy seafood, but they are apparently at war with folks who live outside the city walls.Cut to: a cop named Marik who likes to get high on a drug called "cream" and have fantasy sex with a hooker. Ten years have passed since his sisters disappeared, apparently captured by one of the bad folks who live somewhere else. Marik's mother is the only human in Salus who still has hope. The city is doomed, the air is becoming toxic, and it is only a matter of months before everyone dies (although most of them plan to die in a drug-fueled orgy, which seems like a good plan). Unless, of course, a nick-of-time probe returns bearing news of a habitable world.Eventually the mother and son go on a quest, finding humans who are even more degenerate than those they left behind. If you're into bizarre orgies with mutated fish creatures (and who isn't?), this is the graphic novel for you.Hope versus despair is the theme of volume 1 (when you're really low, "there's only room to rise"). Low tells a decent story although it takes some time for the plot to develop. The art is a little strange -- it looks like it may have been drawn by someone who took mescaline, giving meaning to the "delirium" in the subtitle -- but it grew on me. I particularly like the coloring. There's a lot happening here and I give the creators points for being ambitious, but the ambition isn't realized with a coherent, compelling story. Volume 1 makes me interested in reading volume 2, but it doesn't leave me aching for more. I'm giving Low a weak 4 stars that is probably closer to 3 1/2.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful, hope filled, and enthralling By ThatTom2993 This is a gorgeous and weird read that might not be for everyone. Hidden amongst the fiery colors and wild, sometimes surreal art, is a story that's centered around hope and perseverance. I don't think I've ever come across a comic that is as imaginative nor one whose narrative strives for optimism. Typically mature story telling leans on pessimism and doom-and-gloom to drive their characters forward, but here, it's the inner strength and belief in hope. I haven't read a story that has so explicitly or on-the-nose been about being optimistic despite seeming like the world is against you, and it's refreshing to be in the head space of a character that's so nurturing and self confident. For me, this is one of the most uplifting and motivating reads I have ever come across, and I can't wait to see what happens next. Highly, highly recommend for anyone who wants to read something different or needs an pick-me-up

In a career that has spanned six decades, Sir Tom Jones has performed with almost every major recording artist, from Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis and Sinatra, to Robbie Williams, Van Morrison and Jessie J, across every imaginable genre, from rock and pop to country, blues and soul. The one constant throughout has been his unique musical gift and unmistakable voice. In this, his first ever autobiography, Tom will revisit his past, both personal and professional, exploring the twists of fate that took a boy from a poor Welsh coal-mining family to global celebrity status. He will chart the stories behind the hits as well as the ups and downs of his professional life - from the heyday in Las Vegas and subsequent fallow years in the 1980s to his renaissance and comeback, thanks to the direction and management of his son, Mark - as well as shedding a light on the life he has led behind the cameras and the stage.

From The Bottom To The Top By The Maestro I went to see Tom Jones under sufferance, in concert about 30 years ago when he was at his peak with a female fan and not expecting much at all although I did like some of his music. But I was no fan. However it did not take me long to be a fan after witnessing a strong performance, a great set list and a great sense of humour. Over the years my respect for him has not diminished.I've read a few books on Tom Jones and this is easily the best although he does avoid the affairs that have dogged him over the years. He eludes to temptation early in the book and doesn't go any further. I suppose you can get the business of affairs from the Sunday papers or from other authors who do not show the real Tom Jones, just the salacious side of him. Notwithstanding this the book is very well written and engaging, surprisingly so.He comes across as a working class lad who despite living the extreme opposite of one for most of his life, still has his roots in the small house he came from in Wales. I enjoyed this book and would give it five stars but for the fact he has not really touched on what has helped keep his name in the media over the years. You can understand why he has kept it out of his book but it would have been interesting to get his point of view on what has sold many newspapers over the years. Despite his alleged human failings it is clear the number one woman in his life is Linda. What the book lacks is more than compensated with revealing cameo appearances of Elvis, John Lennon, Engelbert Humperdinck, Paul McCartney and others, If you want to know what it takes to get to the top then this is the book to read. He takes aim at a couple of stars and it is refreshing to read such candor from an A grade entertainer. This book deserves to sell well much like the author continues to deserve to be enjoyed as a performer. It is a surprisingly good read and one that is hard to put down. Other entertainers could do well to read this and see how to write an autobiography (even with some omissions...)

As a librarian I come across many different books and this, by far, is one of the coolest children's books I've seen. Children of all ages will appreciate this book and its beautiful pictures and informative facts. I will be purchasing for my own home library for all of my children to enjoy, 13, 11 and 4.Not only are the pictures beautiful and dynamic to look at, the author has categorized the animals into different unique sets, such as "The architects" (animals that build), "The faithful" (animals that "love"), and "The brainboxes" (animals that think like humans) to name a few. She includes familiar animals as well as the obscure and gives facts about most. This is a beautiful, informative book and I applaud the author for her stunning work. I am a huge customer of amazon and have never left a review on anything. I felt this book should get the proper recognition it deserves.

He is entranced by the colourful graphic nature of the book, and particularly the unique way of categorising animals. I think that this helps children remember animals and their traits in a novel way. For instance, I doubt the average child would think of the Cuban Tree frog as "a gladiator" or a Wild Boar as "a homebody". It's obviously not meant to be an encyclopedia, but a celebration of animals great and small. And there is just enough information included to light a desire to find out more, from google or an actual encyclopaedia.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This is a fun book. Sure By Serious Walker This is a fun book. Sure, it is non traditional, but that's what makes it fun. It makes the children think about how animals are alike and not just which classification they belong to or where they live.It is well written and has some interesting thoughts. There are some less familiar animals and the children can look for further information. This is a book to make children think about things/ animals differently. If they want a textbook, they have those as well. This is strictly fun.

The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B, by Teresa Toten

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—Hazel and Augustus need to move over because Batman and Robyn are about to take their place in the annals of YA literary romantic couples. The two teens meet in a group setting for those afflicted by obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Adam Ross, aka Batman, has severe OCD that is debilitating at times. He is intimidated when he joins a weekly group because most of the members are a bit older than him; there is also a girl who he finds irresistible. Each group member takes on a superhero persona for sessions at the urging of their psychologist. Adam chooses Batman, and is floored when his crush Robyn chooses Robin in order to be his sidekick. Adam has a knack for helping others who struggle with their own issues, including his half-brother, Sweetie, who has regular meltdowns; his mother, who is a hoarder; and his best friend, Ben, who has a weight problem. Unfortunately, he is so consumed with his own counting, tapping, and difficulties entering thresholds that he does not realize his gifts. Through Adam, Toten examines the trials and tribulations of OCD head on, but Adam also deals with the usual teenage problems of love, friendships, school, and divorced parents. Readers will relate to Adam's anxieties and root for him as his relationship with Robyn develops. VERDICT This is a definite next-read for teens who loved John Green's The Fault in Our Stars (Dutton, 2012) and Cammie McGovern's Say What You Will (HarperCollins, 2014).—Elizabeth Kahn, Patrick F. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A book that succeeds on numerous levels By John Rogers ClarkIV Navigating the teen years is challenging even when everything in your life is good, but when endless things jump out to bite you, it becomes a scary minefield. This is what life is like for Adam Ross who has obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) so severe that it has built a giant all between him and everyone except his mom and step brother Sweetie. That's because they have their own demons. Mom is a hoarder and barely hanging on to the facade that she's a successful nurse at a local hospital. Sweetie loves Adam, or Batman, his super hero persona adopted in his OCD outpatient group. Adam is the only person who can calm Sweetie when he starts to escalate due to his own mental illness. When Robyn Plummer joins the group after being discharged from a residential treatment program, Adam falls for her very fast and very hard. She makes him begin to think about the possibility of something better than letting his mental and physical rituals rule every moment of his life. He starts by finally involving himself in group, getting everyone to adopt a super hero alter identity and then encouraging everyone to walk down the stairs instead of taking the elevator. He even gets everyone to accompany him on a field trip after group to the Catholic church where he was an altar boy before his illness grew so strong he stopped going. Everything Adam does to break out of his own head, he does for Robyn and it not only helps her get a lot better, it has positive effects on other members of the group. Unfortunately, no matter how much his efforts help everyone else, Adam can't stop his own rituals from escalating, so much so that he fears he might even be detrimental to Robyn's emotional health. How they navigate the doubly tricky seas of illness and teen romance, how he deals with his mom's increasingly bizarre behavior and what happens when he finds himself facing a giant crisis that's beyond his ability to hide, make for a sometimes painful, but always gripping read. This book succeeds on a number of levels. It's a great offbeat teen romance, it makes each member of the OCD group seem very real and human, it makes the agony of severe OCD rituals understandable for anyone unfamiliar with the illness and it does a great job of portraying the unique stresses of blended families when there are huge secrets that everyone tiptoes around. I liked the ending and strongly suggest anyone reading the book read the interview with the author at the end because it really helps to understand how and why she wrote this story. This is an excellent addition for school and public libraries.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A refreshingly honest and good coming-of-age story By Little Willow When Robyn Plummer walks into Room 13B, Adam falls in love at first sight. That may sound like a typical boy-meets-girl story, but, thankfully, this book is anything but cliché. The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B by Teresa Toten is refreshingly honest, anchored by a memorable main character.Adam, age 15, is vulnerable, loyal, and sometimes confused by his feelings and by the actions of those around him. He is quieter than some, a little more in his thoughts, which are expressed in limited third-person narrative. His parents are divorced, and he lives with his mom most of the time. She pretends everything is okay while enduring her own private struggle, something Adam tries to both respect and understand. Meanwhile, his father has remarried, and while Adam gets along all right with his dad and his stepmom, the member of that household that undoubtedly enjoys his visits the most is his little brother, Sweetie, who is full of life and full of love. (Kudos to Toten for creating a young, vibrant character that sounds and acts his age. Absolutely spot-on depiction of a preschooler.) It is interesting to note what (and who) each member of Adam's family clings to, and what they're willing to fight for when the going gets tough. When Adam isn't in one of his two homes, he is usually in Room 13B. Room 13B isn't a classroom; it's a meeting place for a young adult OCD support group. This book gave me what I wanted but didn't get from the TV show Red Band Society: a realistic look at a diverse group of kids who meet due to a medical diagnosis but are not defined by their condition; people who are not the "worst" examples of their condition nor the "best"; characters who are relatable but not cookie-cutter. Each teen has a distinct personality, appearance, and medical history. Their bonding sessions both inside and outside of Room 13B are wonderful. They honestly try to help one another rather than sabotage or one-up each other. When Chuck, the friendly, caring doctor who oversees the group, asks the kids to adopt nom de guerres, almost all of them select superhero names. Robyn picks Robin, prompting Adam to immediately declare himself Batman.Adam is determined to win Robyn's heart. He has never been in love before, never had a girlfriend, but he falls head over heels for Robyn. He is not simply on a quest for love, but actually fascinated by this specific girl. As the story continues, their friendship develops and deepens. Adam's unconscious need to protect others extends easily to Robyn as he learns more about her, and he tries to be a better person (and taller) so he can be worthy of her. His OCD rituals are both aided and exacerbated by his new goals and his growing awareness that things aren't entirely right at either of his homes. This book is good. It's solid and it's interesting and it's realistic and it's good. It sheds light on a condition that many people suffer from in silence and shame, and instead of reducing OCD to a punchline or over-dramatizing it, Toten offers believable characters with various rituals and paths to healing. The story moves at an easygoing pace with decent plotting. And most of all, it has a realistic protagonist who is a truly good egg. Adam is dealing with that wonderful, frustrating time when you don't want to be treated like a child but you sometimes wish you were still a carefree little kid, when you want to be independent but you can't drive yet, when you realize your parents are people with their own histories and bad habits and secrets. Just as the author does with his little brother, Toten is also able to capture the appropriate tone for Adam's age and situation. Adam sits at neither hero-with-a-burden character extreme, not wallowing in unbearable darkness and cursing the weight of the world that sits upon his shoulders, nor grinning from ear to ear and boasting that everything's going to be fine. He's simply trying to live his life. As his heart gets broken and mended, so will the hearts of readers. The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B by Teresa Toten is a beautifully simple, steady coming-of-age story that I highly recommend, especially to fans of Jordan Sonnenblick and David Levithan.

The story centers around Adam, a fifteen-year-old kid with OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder). At the start of the story he's joined a support group for fellow OCD sufferers and immediately falls in love with one of the other teenagers, Robyn. The following love story between the two of them is sweet and I enjoyed watching Robyn and Adam help each other with their own OCD problems.Adam is a great main character. He's sweet but constantly unsure of himself, full of anxiety and dealing with multiple problems at home (mostly surrounding his mother, who is dealing with her own compulsive hoarding and depression). Adam's OCD escalates as the book goes on, and he is constantly trying to manage it and hide it. I thought the author did a great job describing just how much OCD can affect a person's life and just how time-consuming it can be (describing, for example, how it would often take Adam fifteen minutes just to walk through his front door at home).I especially loved Adam's support group, which was filled with quirky characters who all form an unlikely friendship. At the beginning of the book each of the members takes on a superhero name, and so we hardly hear their real names. Instead we deal with the likes of people such as Wonder Woman, Thor, Wolverine and Batman. The antics of the OCD support group were always amusing and at the same time provided insight into the different aspects that OCD can have. This was, overall, a very sweet coming-of-age story for Adam with a nice touch of romance and some great side characters. I really have no complaints about it, and it's a great story for anyone interested in learning about OCD.
