One would believe that with all that has been going on with lunar exploration, it would be outdated. To a certain extent it is, but is also provides an excellent foundation for students of lunar geology and stratigraphy. The images are reproduced clearly (although not as crisply as his follow-up book on the geology of Mars). The diagrams and illustrations are wonderfully clutter-free and are an art-form by themselves. The author had a gift for organization and was able to explain geological and stratigraphic concepts concisely, but clearly. It was a real loss to science when he disappeared in 1980 while mountain climbing in Nepal. His scientific peers honored him by renaming the Viking 1 lander, The Thomas Mutch Memorial Station.I purchased the book used, and it came in very good condition, although with a slightly musty odor. The pages are not discolored and the binding is intact. It was a real pleasure to finally lay my hands on this book. It was everything I thought it would be.

I was disappointed with the last few I ordered and was disappointed with the ridiculous and stupid storylines. But finally some redemption here , but really its hit or miss with these series and I really get upset and frustrated for a poor display of our heroine and a even worse plot. In the new version of the famous Vampire heroine warrior from Draculon, oh wait I mean Eden, or no I mean outside of Eden, or is it really hell, but she thought she was from Draculon but it wasn't and if I forgot to mention she is sister of the other blood sucking vampires daughters and sons of her mother who originally was Adam first wife, come on! Do you now understand my frustration. But there is hope, this story brought our favorite heroine in peril, trapped and in the clutches of her enemies, but you know she's going to come out on top and will eventually rip out their throats of her enemies and bathe in their blood so lets get on with it. A good story and plot (for a change), exceptional art bringing the sexy back in bloodsuckers, so they seem to be on the right track only time will tell.

Collins and was psyched to find she was writing Vampirella. This book is fun in terms of how Vampirella takes on various versions of vampires from other cultures, but there's really not much more to it than that.

Quirky gods always make for interesting characters. Flaws you can love, evil doers you can revile. Enough of the usual tropes with interesting twists to keep you turning pages and interested in the next book. Add romance, betrayal, violence, monsters and SEALs and you have a great tale well told.

Turley Little did I know when reading the first book," The Fire Bringers" that I was about to become addicted to this series! I couldn't stop until I had bought them all, at a very low price, I might add, I enjoyed this very much to say the least. Buy this, enjoy it, you won't be sorry

I enjoyed the dynamic of Amy/Creation and Bodhi/Chaos with a little of Odin (Steve) mixed in. I'm sorry that the series ended, but I understand you can't do much more to their "happy" ending.

Tempted to Give Up? Here’s How to Keep Going

If you browse through the interviews with some of the most successful people on Earth, you’ll find one common piece of advice shared by virtually all of them: They never give up on their big goals. Research shows that grit is a better predictor for success than any other factor. The ability to keep going despite setbacks is more important than your IQ, character or other external factors like your upbringing or surroundings. But what does it really mean to “never give up”? What exactly is grit? How do you persevere when faced with larger than life difficulties? How do you keep going when you’re at the brink of exhaustion and all your hard work hasn’t been rewarded yet? I wrote this book to explore the subject of persistence from a more scientific point of view than cliché self-help sayings. I want to share with you how exactly to stick to your goals according to peak performers and science – not vague motivational advice that assumes we have unlimited strength once we’re motivated enough. Here are just a couple of things you will learn from the book: - A crucial piece of advice you can learn from the first people who reached the South Pole. If you make the wrong choice, you’ll burn out – guaranteed. - What famous American comic Jerry Seinfeld did in his early days of career to keep going. It’s a simple trick that provides huge results. - What a study on top musicians, athletes, actors and chess players can teach you about achieving results and persistence. The elite performers practice much fewer hours than you believe. - Five of the most common ways you lead yourself to self-sabotage. Usually, you’re not even aware of how many of your efforts go for naught simply because of the five things I discuss in this book. - According to studies, this one trait is strongly associated with grit and persistence. Learn what it is and how to develop it in five different ways. - Five focusing questions to keep going. Asking yourself these questions will help you boost your motivation when you’re at the brink of giving up. - How listening to others whining makes a part of your brain shrink and affects your ability to persevere when faced with setbacks. - Six bestselling authors and bloggers share their best techniques on how to keep going when you want to give up: Stephen Guise (author of “Mini Habits: Smaller Habits, Bigger Results”), Joel Runyon (blogger at ImpossibleHQ.com), Serena Star-Leonard (bestselling author of “How to Retire in 12 Months: Turning Passion into Profit”) Derek Doepker (bestselling author of “Why You’re Stuck”), Michal Stawicki (bestselling author of “Trickle-Down Mindset: The Missing Element in Your Personal Success”), and Hung Pham (bestselling author of “Break Through: 12 Powerful Steps to Destroy Your Mental Barriers and Achieve Success”). There’s no reason why you should give up if you’re working on the right goal. Learn how to make sure you’ll reach your objectives. Scroll up and buy the book now. Grit: How to Keep Going When You Want to Give Up, by Martin Meadows

Review "Martin keeps his discussion sided by charts and graphs to keep the information scientifically sound, but where his book excels in the personal manner in which he shares his won steps and offers a warm arm around the shoulder stance." - Grady Harp, top100 Amazon reviewer"Once again, this book is chocked with research, details, helps, tricks, tips, nuggets. This book works best when coupled with his other book How To Build Self-Discipline. If you want to persevere and build mental toughness to keep going then check out this book." - Dave Anthold, reader"A down-to-earth and comprehensive guide to persistence and achievement of one's goal(s), "Grit" is an admirable addition to one's motivational library. It follows fast on the footsteps of Meadows' previous book, "How to Build Self-Discipline." - Kenna McKinnon, reader"I have to admit that this is the second book I've read from this author and I'm always impressed with what he has to share. As someone who knows a lot about this subject myself, there were still lots of good nuggets of information that opened my eyes and made me consider things in different ways. To me, that's a sign of effective writing." - James Anthony, reader"What I found most interesting about the book was that it also describes not only how to become more persistent but how to become relentless in the pursuit of one's goals. The book is balanced as the author also covers a number of pitfalls the reader may experience." - Jim McCraigh, reader

From the Author I wrote this book to explore the science of persistence and help you keep going when you're tempted to give up. By making it the goal of this book, I assume you already have a powerful motivation to work on your goals, yet you find yourself rapidly approaching the point of giving up. Together we'll explore how to push through obstacles and stay tough even when you've yet to get the taste of the reward you're after. I supplement scientific advice with my personal experience in various areas such as fitness, business and learning new skills. Some of the things I achieved thanks to persistence include losing over 30 pounds in 12 weeks (and no, I've never gained it back), creating several businesses, learning two foreign languages, and overcoming crippling shyness. We'll start with asking the most important question (nothing else matters if your answer to this question is "no"), and then proceed to seven chapters dedicated to various aspects of persistence. In the final chapter, you'll get advice from six other self-help authors to get different perspectives. When you finish this book, you'll possess a whole slew of tips and tricks to keep going when you want to give up. You'll understand which behaviors will threaten your goals and which ones will help you stay on course.Last but not least, you'll be ready to tackle challenges that would make an average person yell with frustration.

About the Author Martin Meadows is the pen name of a bestselling author who has dedicated his life to personal growth. He constantly reinvents himself by making drastic changes in his life. Over the years, he has: regularly fasted for over 40 hours, taught himself two foreign languages, lost over 30 pounds in 12 weeks, ran several businesses in various industries, took ice-cold showers and baths, lived on a small tropical island in a foreign country for several months, and wrote 400-page long novel's worth of short stories in one month.Yet, self-torture is not his passion. Martin likes to test his boundaries to discover how far his comfort zone goes. His findings (based both on his personal experience and scientific studies) help him improve his life. If you're interested in pushing your limits and learning how to become the best version of yourself, you'll love Martin's works.

They add up to the bigger wins.' - Hung Pham By Grady Harp Martin Meadows is the pen name of an author who has dedicated his life to personal growth. He constantly reinvents himself by making drastic changes in his life. Over the years, he has: regularly fasted for over 40 hours, taught himself two foreign languages, lost over 30 pounds in 12 weeks, ran several businesses in various industries, took ice-cold showers and baths, lived on a small tropical island in a foreign country for several months, and wrote 400-page long novel's worth of short stories in one month. Martin likes to test his boundaries to discover how far his comfort zone goes. The bio of the author is significant cause of the nature of his book. In his Prologue he lays out his thoughts well: `If you browse through the interviews with some of the most successful people on Earth, you'll find one common piece of advice shared by virtually all of them: They never give up on their big goals. Research shows that grit is a better predictor for success than any other factor1. The ability to keep going despite setbacks is more important than your IQ, character or other external factors like your upbringing or surroundings. But what does it really mean to "never give up"? At book's end he offers what he considers the critical points he has emphasized: `Utilize the power of routines to make your behaviors automated. The less resistance you feel to work on your goals, the less likely you are to give up, Work on your mental toughness by making yourself uncomfortable, Focus on the results and don't disregard the power of proper rest. Even the top performers don't practice for more than four and a half hour a day, Identify how you sabotage yourself and learn how to deal with these behaviors, Become a more resilient person by learning how to adapt to changes and solving problems, Be relentless. Use the five techniques to stick to your goals, and Become aware of the most common mistakes people make when working on their goals and avoid them in your life.' Solid points. Great coaching techniques, but this is all the more helpful when the reader actually works the way through this book. It is well worth the investment of time. Grady Harp, March 15

What I love about him as an author is he practices what he preaches. He does not tell us to do something that he has not tried himself - instant credibility. Martin starts by sharing that "Research shows that grit is a better predictor for success than any other factor."Anytime we want to persevere, we must ask ourselves whether we want to continue or should we just stop. This is the lead question in the book and it is a doozy. We must be able to answer this question before we continue or we will just be spinning our wheels. Throughout the entire book, Martin brings his signature research combined with experience to the book. He has well-documented examples and how we can put them into practice. He talks about Jerry Seinfeld ticking off the days in order to develop the habit of writing. He identifies that one of the key factors in Grit is mental toughness. Our bodies may be willing, but the mind tell us we cannot continue. In order to get beyond where we are we have to tell our mind to get out of our own way. Do not be fooled that results don't matter - effort is often rewarded more than the result, but we must focus on the result if we want to make last changes and push to a new level. What I love about the book:- Chapter Summaries: each chapter has a summary of the key learnings in the chapter. These can be great reference guides to help you work on a particular skill in developing grit.- Geeked Out Research: I love the research. I took so many notes on studies and research findings that it will take some time to comb through it.- Action Oriented: this book helps you make the changes. The simple idea of Seinfeld checking off the days we write is something each of us can do for any new skill we want to learn or grow in.Three Things Learned:1) Mental Toughness: this is an area where I need to tell my mind to get out of my way. When it comes to exercise or weight loss our mind plays with us and tells us we cannot do it.2) We Sabotage Ourselves - when we work on perseverance we need to remind ourselves to focus on our goals and the results. We can make small choices that will pay dividends in the end.3) Smile - we can reduce our negative outlook or increase our mood if we just smile. We smile we make connections and add an er of authenticity to us.Once again, this book is chocked with research, details, helps, tricks, tips, nuggets. This book works best when coupled with his other book How To Build Self-Discipline. If you want to persevere and build mental toughness to keep going then check out this book.

A Guide to Persistence and Achievement of One's Goals By Kenna McKinnon I loved "Grit: How to Keep going When You Want to Give Up" but do want to emphasize that one has to have grit in the first place, I think, to get the most benefit from a book like this.Like the Duke, show "True Grit" when you're tempted to give up and the path will eventually straighten! Martin Meadows shows us how to achieve the art and science of persistence, as well as a brief recap of the advice of other experts in the field. Well researched, it is broken down into manageable portions, short chapters, bullets to make it easier to remember. I would suggest rereading Meadows' suggestions on several occasions throughout your journey to success, especially the chapter on seven common mistakes or when, indeed, one should give up (when the goal is the wrong fit or you're engaging in a "false hope" practice where expectations are unrealistic).Meadows apparently follows his own advice, having achieved success in many areas and pulling himself up from the age of twenty by his own galoshes. I admire his personal self-discipline and persistence, and one could fault him only on his model of "mental toughness" whereby he recommends cold showers and intermittent fasting to build toughness, for example, though he does say he is not a medical doctor and his advice should be taken, I presume, with a grain of red pepper.A down-to-earth and comprehensive guide to persistence and achievement of one's goal(s), "Grit" is an admirable addition to one's motivational library. It follows fast on the footsteps of Meadows' previous book, "How to Build Self-Discipline."

From the author of Pulitzer-nominated The Devil’s Highway and national bestseller The Hummingbird’s Daughter comes an exquisitely composed collection of poetry on life at the border. Weaving English and Spanish languages as fluidly as he blends cultures of the southwest, Luis Urrea offers a tour of Tijuana, spanning from Skid Row, to the suburbs of East Los Angeles, to the stunning yet deadly Mojave Desert, to Mexico and the border fence itself. Mixing lyricism and colloquial voices, mysticism and the daily grind, Urrea explores duality and the concept of blurring borders in a melting pot society.

Tijuana Book of the Dead, by Luis Alberto Urrea

Review Praise for The Tijuana Book Of The Dead"a gorgeous, engaging collection...[Urrea] captures the song and spirit of people who might otherwise be invisible....As difficult as the subject matter may be, the writing is radiant, showing how the worth of human beings can’t be dimmed by a border fence or hot-button politics."—Washington Post"Urrea’s facility with language (he writes in English and Spanish, at times in the same poem) and with sound is absolutely striking....[R]eaders won’t dispute Urrea’s storytelling ability, as many of these poems are efficiently packaged narratives of seemingly real people at the real border, burdened with desire and pain and oppression, and even routine; nor will they be able to dispute this book’s tremendous, thumping heart." —Library Journal"He has an undeniable technical skill and his poems move adroitly through rich images, using physicality to make history (personal, cultural, and national) immediately present....Urrea displays accomplished movement in tight, driving narratives and poems that end with disarmingly succinct and arresting lines....[T]he book includes many moments of touching insight and poems that readers will rightfully celebrate." —Publishers Weekly"This most recent book of poems pays homage to the bloodshed and homicide that has become a hallmark of American drug wars, transporting readers from the vast expanse of the Sonoran Desert to urban decay in downtown Chicago. [Tijuana Book of the Dead] oscillates between brutal ultraviolence ... rapturous beauty ... and fanciful whimsy....Peppering lyrics with shoe polish, hair tonic, and wood varnish, Urrea echoes originators of Latino literature, such as Luis Valdez and Lalo Delgado, bridging literary generations in unflinching, evocative verse." —Booklist"The Tijuana Book Of The Dead is overflowing with stance and heat, truthfulness and lyric musicality. No surprise, Urrea is masterful in telling the right parts of a story; his craftsmanship is formidable in its ease and transparency. I love this collection’s astringent comedy and corresponding moments of outrage and despair, the ways it insists on ethical consciousness in an epoch of numbing and puerile ironies. So it’s possible that “Poetry makes nothing happen,” directly, immediately, but it’s clear Urrea understands the essential and clarifying effect poetry has on people’s souls over time. Urrea understands the essential and clarifying effect poetry has on people’s souls over time." — Erin Belieu“An award-winning poet, fiction writer and essayist, Urrea should be required reading for anyone living in the Southwest. Pure Urrea means being part Mexican, part Indian and part gringo. Reading his work means getting lost in stories that have both fable-like romance and visceral hopelessness, in voices that shift beautifully from sharp and quick-witted to meditative and soft.”—San Diego Union Tribune“Jaunty, bawdy, gritty, sweet…a bottomless comic energy and a heart large enough to accept—even revel in—all of human folly.”—Stewart O'Nan, author of Songs for the MissingPraise for The Devil's Highway"Superb....Nothing less than a saga on the scale of the Exodus and an ordeal as heartbreaking as the Passion....The book comes vividly alive with a richness of language and a mastery of narrative detail that only the most gifted of writers are able to achieve."—Los Angeles Times Book Review"The book's rare power is that it is both epic in scope — a trek through the wilderness in search of 'the promised land' — and intensely personal." —Boston Globe"A reading of The Devil's Highway will undoubtedly brace your soul and remind you that all of us, rich or poor, brown, white, black or yellow, are traveling through these parts for only a little while." San Francisco ChroniclePraise for The Hummingbird's Daughter"The Hummingbird's Daughter breathes with life, populated with multiple, complex and genuinely individual characters.... It is an immensely entertaining work that is intelligently and sympathetically told.... [A] classic, a tribute and love song to the colorful and vibrant heart of all things Mexican." —The San Francisco Chronicle"To the very end, The Hummingbird's Daughter is a book of surprises and savory treasures." —The Washington Post"A beautifully composed novel....[T]hat constantly stirs a reader's own sense of wonder." Chicago Tribune"The Hummingbird's Daughter is nothing short of miraculous....The story of the saint is told with such love and care that it will make a believer out of anyone." The Oregonian"[Urrea] has rendered a literary gem that does more than soar. It transcends." Chicago Sun-TimesPraise for Queen of America"'Who is more of an outlaw than a saint?'" one of Luis Urrea's characters poses. The answer is this ferocious, ribald romance of the border. Jaunty, bawdy, gritty, sweet, Queen of America has a bottomless comic energy and a heart large enough to accept-even revel in-all of human folly."—Stewart O'Nan, author of Emily Alone and Songs for the Missing"Captivating...With deft humor and a poetic lyricism that seamlessly folds one scene into another, Urrea unfolds the story of his real-life great-aunt Teresita, a teenage saint who was known for healing miracles... Each scene in Queen of America unfurls gracefully like delicate wisps of smoke. Whether Teresita is being held captive in Northern California by a band of profiteering medical professionals, or being feted like a queen in New York's social circles, this epic novel paints a portrait of America-and its inhabitants-with grace and style. It will spark fire in readers' hearts."—Megan Fishmann, Bookpage"Urrea delights in the texture of things. Turn-of-the-century America, particularly New York, comes alive at his fingertips: He sees both the silk and the mud... In imagining the story of his great-aunt Teresita, Urrea might have chosen to make her a hero; that would have been easier. What we get is more complicated, more modern... Hers is the story of what it means to have a gift, and how a talent can also be a burden."—Carolyn Kellogg, Los Angeles Times"Colorful [and] exuberant."—Sam Sacks, Wall Street Journal"A magnificent work of literary alchemy, so masterfully infused with myth and history, you will feel these characters in your heart, your gut. You will grieve for their immortal souls."—Jamie Ford, author of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet"A gritty, bold, and much-anticipated sequel to The Hummingbird's Daughter... Fiercely romantic and at times heartbreaking but also full of humor, Urrea's latest novel blends fairy tale, Western adventure, folk tale, and historical drama. Fans of Hummingbird and readers new to Urrea's work will surely enjoy this magnificent, epic novel."—Library Journal, Starred Review•Into the Beautiful North earned a citation of excellence from the American Library Association Rainbow's Project.•His book of short stories, Six Kinds of Sky, was named the 2002 small-press Book of the Year in fiction by the editors of ForeWord magazine. He has also won a Western States Book Award in poetry for "The Fever of Being."

Not only a poet but superb at fiction, historical fiction, and non-fiction alike. As told from his unique viewpoint, today's human condition becomes emotionally charged. Get ready for a ride with Urrea! If this is your first book by this author, don't stop here. Treat yourself to the wide variety of his offerings. You won't be disappointed.

By Clarke Crutchfield This is a great book to show anybody who thinks poetry is an airy-fairy, self-indulgent, navel-gazing undertaking written by and for people who never get out of their room. This is a work of rare passion and power. Urrea engages the world with keen observation, compassion and humor, with narrative force worthy of a great novelist (for Urrea, author of "The Hummingbird's Daughter" and "Into the Beautiful North," surely is one) and the lyricism of a great poet -- a rare combination. Treat yourself and buy it. You'll be entertained, you'll be moved, and you'll learn a few things about the world and how to live in it and about the world of the spirit. And, oh yeah, it just might remind you of what you once knew and then probably forgot about poetry -- that against a hard world it's a weapon of beauty and transformative power.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding poetry for real people By Julie Sherwood This is one of my all-time favorite poetry books. The poems demonstrate a great range of ideas. Two of my favorites are "Help Me" and "Song of Praise" but there isn't a bad one in the bunch. A few of the poems are in Spanish, but with a little help, you can kind of figure out what they mean--but the way they sound in Spanish is so much more dramatic. Funny, sad, pensive, strident - the book has so much to offer that it's definitely worth reading more than once. I've shared it with several people who have all enjoyed it as much as I did.

Very unpredictable unless you really look and analyze while you are reading, which I highly recommend. You may think that this is going in one direction, then it flips to something totally different. One of the best from Kaori Yuki since Godchild.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Very good By Jude ~4/5This series is good and gorgeous. And violent. The first arch ends in this volume, and then the new main characters are time skipped to the present day. I think this is the first time I’ve read a Kaori Yuki book that was set in the present, digital age. The digital, internet part is definitely being taken advantage of, but it’s just neat seeing all the current-day clothing and electronics and settings in her art style. Very pretty, to be sure. Now, Sorath, Leice, and Nonoha are living as a family. And then deaths start happening in town, and a demon is running loose. And Sorath and Leice is getting pulled in.This series is so good. It’s messy, and death-ridden, and bad, as it should be. I’m liking the banter and relationship between the three characters, but there’s also some underlying problems between Sorath and Leice. Nonoha is a sweet girl, who’s going to be pulled into all the dark happenings.I’m loving it. These hardbacks are a bit spendy, but gorgeous.[More of my reviews are available on my blog, Geeky Reading, to which there's a link on my profile.]

A Vampire Cat Serves Only One Master

When a stray black cat named Kuro crosses Shirota Mahiru's path, the high school freshman's life will never be the same again. Kuro is, in fact, no ordinary feline, but a servamp: a servant vampire. While Mahiru's personal philosophy is laissez-faire, he soon becomes embroiled in an ancient, altogether surreal war between vampires and humans.

Funny - Cute - Vicious By Two Shelves It's rare for us to get action shoujo in English - or any shoujo without all the fuzzy screentone - so this is a series I've been looking forward to.The main character is a conscientious boy (with the standard tragic past) who adopts an (adorable and fluffy) kitty, who turns out to actually be a (slothful and selfish) vampire. "Kuro," as the kitty-vamp is called, is nice as far as vampires go, since the rest are generally murderous and savage. Or in the case of Lust, lewd. (There's a seven-deadly-sins theme going too.)It's a promising first volume, and I look forward to the following installments!

A unique comedy/horror series from Seven Seas publishing brings us a story of a boy who decided to take a cat home from off of the street. Turns out that the cat is actually a vampire named Sleepy Ash. The first volume has a lot of interesting themes, and I am curious to see where this story goes from here. Definitely worth a shot for any fan of Shonen manga!

I have hopes that it will follow the Devil's and Realist route and get animated soon, it already got a drama CD and gets tons of color pages in the JPN manga. In any case, Im glad to finally be able to read this and own it. The vampire servant story is pretty funny. Kuro, the cover character is hilarious and lazy though comes through when the time is right. His partner, Mahiru is pretty funny too with his simple get it done attitude. They have a nice interaction going on. The rest of the cast comes together nicely. There is the typical busty female though that this series like to throw in though I guess writers dont want to have an all male thing going on.In any case, the quality of the book is great, no typos, great artwork with lots of sound effects translated or redrawn (not all). The extras only include a color insert which is nice to see how Mahiru is supposed to look and a few others. I wish there was an afterword or more. There are those four panel comedy stripes too.

A monumental retelling of world history through the lens of the sea—revealing in breathtaking depth how people first came into contact with one another by ocean and river, lake and stream, and how goods, languages, religions, and entire cultures spread across and along the world’s waterways, bringing together civilizations and defining what makes us most human. The Sea and Civilization is a mesmerizing, rhapsodic narrative of maritime enterprise, from the origins of long-distance migration to the great seafaring cultures of antiquity; from Song Dynasty human-powered paddle-boats to aircraft carriers and container ships. Lincoln Paine takes the reader on an intellectual adventure casting the world in a new light, in which the sea reigns supreme. Above all, Paine makes clear how the rise and fall of civilizations can be linked to the sea. An accomplishment of both great sweep and illuminating detail, The Sea and Civilization is a stunning work of history.

The Sea and Civilization: A Maritime History of the World, by Lincoln Paine

From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Even though the Earth's surface is 70% water, historical narratives are usually land-centered. Paine (Ships of the World) shifts emphasis from land to water in order to correct this imbalance, an approach that takes the reader through history via the seas. He devises a chronological spiral around the world, starting with a recounting of ancient times, before covering the same areas in medieval times, and so on up to the modern era. Paine's highly detailed work encompasses a wide array of topics, from trade and the influence of the sea on warfare and political coalitions, to ship building techniques through the ages, to piracy and slavery. Of particular interest are the intricate alliances and shifting loyalties of ancient Mediterranean cultures, the outsized role of the relatively tiny Spice Islands, the impact the Vikings had on cultural exchange across coastal Europe, and the influence of religion on areas as diverse as trade and maritime law. Readers expecting a naval history will receive much more: a thorough history of the people, the ports, and the cultural activity taking place on the water. Paine has compiled an invaluable resource for salty dogs and land-lubbers alike. Photos, illus., & maps. Agent: John Wright, John Wright Literary Agency. (Nov.)

From Booklist Sensing that the maritime world is not as prominent in popular consciousness as formerly, Paine presents this ambitiously capacious maritime history of the globe. Visually, it spans from vessels recorded in primitive pictographs to modern photographs, and verbally it addresses every regional arena of mercantile and naval activity as it elevates awareness of seas and rivers as conduits between states and peoples throughout human history. Global in embrace Paine may be, but particular geographical areas, such as the Mediterranean Sea and the seas surrounding Asia, receive his primary attention. Discussing the posture of ancient civilizations such as Egypt and China toward the sea, Paine covers the waxing and waning of empires as evidenced in exchanges of goods and the ships that transported them. The emergence of Europe in global navigation, which Paine prefaces with Viking explorations and medieval commerce in the Baltic and Mediterranean Seas, was a phenomenon that he connects to preexisting Asian trading networks that drew Portugal, then other European nations, into building maritime empires. So comprehensive and knowledgeable a history as Paine’s offers a sturdy keel for any maritime history collection. --Gilbert Taylor

Review “Superbly realized. . . . Elegantly written and encyclopedic in scope. [A] forceful reminder that the urge to ‘go down to the sea in ships’ has shaped civilizations and cultures in every period and in every part of the globe.” —The Wall Street Journal“The Sea and Civilization is, without doubt, the most comprehensive maritime history ever produced. . . . An all-consuming vision oozes from Paine’s book. His passion is to tell the story of the sea. History is seldom written with that kind of passion today.” —The Times (London)  “The most enjoyable, the most refreshing, the most stimulating, the most comprehensive, the most discerning, the most insightful, the most up-to-date—in short, the best maritime history of the world.” —Felipe Fernández-Armesto, author of Millennium: A History of the Last Thousand Years  “Here is a story told with assurance and a refreshing perspective. . . . A bracing journey.” —The Dallas Morning NewsA Choice Magazine Outstanding Academic Title Selection, 2014 “Fascinating and beautifully written. . . . An eloquent vision of how the sea served as a path to the modern world.” —Foreign Affairs  “Paine is full of such illuminating facts. . . . [He] forestalls any western bias with excellent chapters on Asian expansion. . . . ‘The sea held no promise for slaves, coolies, indentured servants, or the dispossessed,’ Paine reminds us, and while it is ‘fickle and unforgiving, it is a fragile environment susceptible to human depredation on a scale unimaginable to our ancestors.’ And yet, whose heart does not sing out when they see the sea? Our last resort, it still holds its promise and its power.” —New Statesman (London) “A magnificently sweeping world history that takes us from the people of Oceania and concludes with the container. In contrast to most books on maritime history, the majority of The Sea and Civilization covers the history of the world before Columbus sailed the ocean blue and at least as much of the narrative focuses on Asia as it does on Europe.” —The Telegraph (London) “An ambitious work. . . . Dense with facts and rich in detail that tells mankind’s story from the perspective of our relation to the seas—as well as lakes, rivers and canals.” —Asian Review of Books  “Brilliantly realized. . . . we have at last a responsible and persuasive explanation of the inextricable connection between the ocean and world civilization.” —Peter Neill, World Ocean Observatory “Takes the reader through history via the seas . . . Paine’s highly detailed work encompasses a wide array of topics, from trade and the influence of the sea on warfare and political coalitions, to ship building techniques through the ages, to piracy and slavery.  . . . Paine has compiled an invaluable resource for salty dogs and land-lubbers alike.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review “Paine deftly navigates the complexities of global culture to create an eminently readable account of mankind’s relationship to the sea. Both profound and amusing, this will be a standard source for decades to come.” —Josh Smith, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, editor of Voyages    “The Sea and Civilization presents a fresh look at the global past. Bringing to bear a formidable knowledge of ships and sails, winds and currents, navigation techniques and maritime law, Lincoln Paine offers a lively tour of world history as seen from the waterline. The result is a fascinating account, full of little-known episodes and novel insights. A major contribution.”  —Kären Wigen, Stanford University, author of A Malleable Map"Paine's a lyrical stylist, and the breadth of his historical vision is extraordinary." —David Mitchell, GQ

By Patrick McCormack Certain topics yield essays that wander along the interests of the author, within the scope of the topic. A history of the Sea and Civilization is basically a survey course, and a large plum tree ripe with fruit for the picking. Regardless of the number of pages, the author is central in what he chooses to write about, and what stays by the shore and never sets sail. This is a good book. It is well written, a compelling read. The review of the history of the sea is a review of men who go down to the sea in ships. The battles, and the explorers, are here. In some ways, this book re-creates some of Daniel Boorstin's book, the explorers, and in some ways it touches on the course of human history. The author uses the design of boats, and the ways of navigation, as an entry point for talking about peoples and water. At some points, the focus seems to be on small boating -- canoes, reed mats... and even when we move to Egypt and boats on the Nile, the scope is more boating than it is oceans and power. I did like the way the ocean currents explain strategies of exploration, and the archaeology of the expansion of peoples. The book opens up into discussions of trade routes, and the projection of might and empire through control of oceans. One thing I love about this book: the author is aware of, and often shows, every single rock carving, pot, or wall image of an ancient ship ever known to man. He is an encyclopedia of the archaeology of ships. He is learned, and an omnivore.I had recently read "The Great Sea: A Human History of the Mediterranean" by David Abulafia, and enjoyed the length and breadth of that work, while feeling that it grew tired in the telling. Here, with more to write about, I feel this book occasionally gets sketchy, in some of the Pacific chapters, and that the author has perhaps too grand a theme. The feel is more of a survey of human history, rather than a grand theme of human development through the sea.Yet the swing is hard, even if the result is a double. I thought that the viewing of human civilization through the lens of the sea is a real, although note complete way to look at matters. Why not civilization and rivers, that old chestnut of geography classes? Civilization and the littoral would cover most of human history. The answer is the mystery of the sea, the magic of the sea, which provides a lens for this book, albeit not an entirely satisfactory historical lens.In short, this is less of a Maritime History of the World, and is rather better described as a History of the Maritime World. And a pretty good one.

He is a mobile being that has always moved from place to place seeking food, new land, fleeing aggressors or oppression, looking to trade, or simply curious about what lay over the horizon. From logs, bark, and animal hide, early man noticed that things float. With great detail Lincoln Paine describes the development of ocean and river travel. From the raft of primitive man as he escapes the shackles of land, down to nuclear-powered ships, the reader follows the quest of opening up new horizons of trade and the cultures they nourished. This extraordinary comprehensive narrative, packed into a little over 700 pages, did appear overwhelming, but once started I became absorbed in the story of mankind's need and desire to travel across water. The more I read the more I wanted to know and found it hard to put down. This volume will find a place on the shelf with my other history books and will more than likely be used as reference as I continue my lifetime study of history.I recommend "The Sea and Civilization" to everyone interested in history because so much of civilization has depended on the sea and travel by water. I give it 5 stars.

The sea is at best an incidental part of all that. A few noteworthy events may stick in the reader's mind--the battles of Midway, Trafalgar and the loss of the Spanish Armada--but most of the course of history is land-based. Lincoln Paine changes the vantage point. Traffic on seas, lakes and rivers has equally as much to do with the spread of human civilization. This densely-packed volume begins roughly in the Old Kingdom of Egypt and brings us all the way to the present day.I was about a hundred pages in when it dawned on me that this is really a textbook--whatever the author's intentions might be. It's a compendium of dates, kings and ship architectures. It wants to be read with a notepad on the side and a highlighter in hand; discussions to follow. The style tends toward the dry: it's impossible to do a quick read-through and then circle back for detail. Comparisons with a truly great naval writer (Samuel Eliot Morison) are not favorable in that regard. I would love to see a reduced version of this book with a more general audience in mind. As fascinating as this material is, it's really hard to stay with it. Reading and absorbing is a commitment of many weeks. So let's consider this as a textbook. As such it's excellent. I can't imagine any serious naval officer not spending a semester with it. It could still benefit from a greater sense of concurrency, since many of the activities happen simultaneously. For example, the last centuries of Ptolemaic Egypt are concurrent with the expansion of river traffic in China. Both economies grew from navigable rivers. I'd love to have seen comparison and contrast. At the very least, a graphic timeline would be quite a plus.I'm not sure that this is a book for the general reader in history. The material is fascinating, but a little too dense for a quick chapter before bedtime. It's an important topic nonetheless. I'd love to see it spawn a summary volume.

I don't deer hunt very often, but when I do go out, I get excited in the beginning of the day, but always seem to be frustrated at the end of the hunt with not much luck. This book has been very helpful for me. It goes over how to party hunt, how to hunt deer in varies locations, what stands to use, how to track a deer after it has been shot, where to purchase equipment, how to save money purchasing equipment, how to approach landowners to hunt on their land, etc. Most importantly, this book is very simple to read and to the point. It is a guide that you can read every year as a refresher so that you can have in your mind what you want to accomplish before you start.

The writer stresses respect toward the land owners who allow you to hunt - good sportsmanship. He also points out the small details that can spook deer, such as being aware of the noise that the packaging of food or drinks the hunter is carrying makes. Helpful tips for any hunter!
