If you are a lover of cats and have a sense of humor, you need this book. Miles spent the majority of his days as an alley cat, hooked on cat tranquilizers and nip, rummaging through the trash bins for his next meager meal. He often found a nice family to take him in for the night, but one family wouldn't let him leave. Now, he doesn't know which is worse, suffering on the streets or trying to live his life in the company of two stupid humans!

They were Oklahoma’s most infamous outlaws, gentleman bandits who robbed trains and banks until meeting their end in a blaze of gunfire on the streets of Coffeyville, Kansas. They were first cousins of the Younger brothers who had ridden with Jesse James, stole horses from Will Rogers’ father, and hid out with Belle Starr’s daughter Pearl. Less known is the fact that they started out as respected deputy U. S. marshals, until politics and recklessness led them to a life of crime. Their first train robbery was in California, resulting in the trial of the century for that state, followed by a jailbreak aided by a prominent politician. Back in Oklahoma and Indian Territories they robbed more trains, gaining notoriety and support from the common people of the area. In 1892 they tried to rob two banks at once in their home town of Coffeyville, but the citizens took up arms against them in a gunfight that left eight people dead. Based on meticulous research into original source documents from the National Archives, period newspaper accounts, and Emmett Dalton’s memoirs, this book dispels many of the myths about the Daltons, reveals many new details about their career, and dramatically brings to life their personalities and motivations. It’s a stirring story of young men hell-bent on excitement and adventure.

Hemsley I have always been interested in this period of US history, since I am a distant relative of Sheriff Bill Tilghman. When I saw that a book about the Daltons had been written, I thought Tilghman might have been a part in this story. I was wrong, but I am very happy that I read this book. It is well written and amazingly well researched. I even put aside Christopher Moore's most recent book to finish The Dalton Boys - not something I would have normally done. I think the thing that impressed me the most was how the author added notes at the end of each chapter telling how he had put the story together. I wish all authors of books of this nature would do that.I recommend this book to anyone who has any interest in the fading years of the "wild west."

Kansas by the Dalton brothers and gang by doing a fine job of historical research By ELDAV Mr. Allin captured the lead up to the famous attempted twin bank robbery in Coffeyville, Kansas by the Dalton brothers and gang by doing a fine job of historical research. Although this is a novel he captured the Oklahoma dialect so well and detailed the lay of the Oklahoma landscape. As an Oklahoma Historian I believe that is the best book I have read on the subject and highly recommend it to anyone interested in the old West.David Donaldson, MEd

But there are some puzzling things... and "Things" is one of them! No "THING" here! The other three members of the Fantastic Four are here, but of all of them The Thing has participated most in the Avengers... and he's the one missing. And not to argue over "powers" like a school boy, but Hawkeye's fightng skills are listed at 7. That put's him in the Captain America, Wolverine, Shang Chi area. A better fighter than Iron Fist, Black Panther... and more. Really? But again, a fun read. Good for new and old readers.

12 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Incomplete Character Guide By Derek McHenry I purchased this book for kicks being a Marvel comics fan and was let down by the fact that they left out some fairly popular villains. How could you forget Modok??? Seriously?Aside from that, the book is in full color and pretty cool if you are curious about the Avengers, especially with the Avengers movie coming in 2012.

32 of 44 people found the following review helpful. Not bad... but too graphic for kids By Michael D Joyce Quality of book - well-made, good binding, nice thick pages and glossy hard cover. Can stand wear and tear of younger childCharacters - good consolidation of Avenger's universe... nice quick info on each character (easy enough for a kid to read)Content: Warning - not appropriate for young children - publishers chose some fairly revealing shots for the female characters... too detailed on the female anatomy and the angles at which they are portrayed. Could have toned down the breast sizes about 4 cups and covered up the cleavage/skin some more and it would have been a great book for a kid. I don't want my son looking at pictures like that in our house.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Surprisingly good By Jude ~4/5I really had no idea what I was getting into when I started this, but I had no doubt I was going to get this volume. There was a lot of hype, and it looked pretty, and I was intrigued. It’s definitely another series with a large band of characters, in a unique setting. And, to be honest, I’m already sold. It took no time at all, surprisingly enough.First of all, this book is beautiful. It’s paperback, but it’s a large (also meaning tall) two-in-one book, with three color pages at the beginning. And the artwork is so pretty, the color pages are worth it.The main character is Nai, and he’s searching for Karoku, his long lost friend (or something, we’re not really clear on that). Nai is clueless, oblivious to how pretty much everything works, but with amazing luck. He’s kind of adorable, honestly. He meets Gareki, a thief (kind of), from a small town, who grudgingly comes to take care of Nai. And then we meet Circus, a very high up police force, full of a lot of unique characters. Among them are Tsukumo, a girl that we’re just starting to get to know, the leader Hirato, and Yogi, who I think is a complete sweetheart and I love him already. We’ve gotten hints to Karoku, and I’m not sure about him, but it looks bad. And I'm getting Loveless vibes, regarding him. There’s a lot of mystery here, especially about who Nai and Karouki are. There’re a lot of characters here, which leaves a lot of room to get to know them all, and I’m excited about that. The artwork is gorgeous. This volume was fast and fun, and I’m so intrigued by the characters and the story. I’m sold, and I can’t wait for the next one.[More of my reviews are available on my blog, Geeky Reading, to which there's a link on my profile.]

I have read books about how men can attract women but this was the first one I've read about women flirting with men. I was pleased with the amount of useful and unique info. The non-verbalization techniques were brilliant and can be easily applied in almost every setting. My favorite part was the taste (using your senses) section. This book outlines for you exactly how to be more approachable and land the person you are eyeing. I recommend this book to both introverts and extroverts looking to learn how to more effectively reel in a romantic prospect.

It's a really short book but it comes with some really helpful scenarios that I often find myself in and the book provides some different options on proper flirting. Something I never thought about before reading this book is the two way communication when flirting and it's not just about me but also how I receive the information from the guy.

In the book, Eloise, or “Elle”, leads us through a number of thoughtful, intriguing and sometimes humorous experiences of her youth. The following excerpts were taken from the book: “It crouched, in wait with loose rocks to fall, and timbers which might loosen and drop on any unwary man or animal that might venture inside.” “Anything was possible. We looked forward to the conversation on the bus. It smelled a little less of foul odors, our shoes slid deftly over the bubble gum and orange peels, and our eyes looked far beyond the spit balled windows.” “Lilly pads float in the backwater marshes. Songbirds trill in the evening breeze. The sun sets to ducks nesting, and frogs boasting under an awesomely brilliant canvas of color and light painted by nature. The old cedar stumps’ wish has been fulfilled.” The tales weave a somewhat crooked path from her family home, with childhood memories beginning in the early 1950s. They lead us across the crooked bridge, of her youth. The tales continue into her teen years throughout the valley, stretching to Sandpoint and Lake Pend Oreille, marching forward, into the natural beauty and fortunes of nature in the present day Silver Valley of northern Idaho.

The story explores the authors young days growing up in a picturesque area that was impacted greatly by mans reaping the natural resources of the area. I found the stories intriguing. The ingenuity of the parents and the children in creating their own housing/playgrounds were refreshing in a world where most children find entertainment scarce outside of an x-box--nintendo--Ipad world. It is a funny, refreshing story of a family that "made do" with the things they had, and had fun doing it. I highly recommend this book especially for young readers but for older readers as well.

She used to be mad about him.

In Mad, Bad, and Dangerous in Plaid by New York Times bestselling author Suzanne Enoch, high-spirited Rowena MacLawry has come to the Highlands after a spectacularly successful debut Season in London, and has made it painfully clear that she's outgrown her girlhood obsession with Lachlan MacTier. That's just fine with him, as he never had any intention of marrying the lass anyway! Yet how can he ignore the fact that the once rough and tumble Winnie has become a very fashionable-and incredibly desirable-young woman...And now he's got it bad...Brawny, rugged Lachlan is nothing like the aristocratic English gentlemen who pursued Winnie-with a passion-in London. Three months away was more than enough to show her a world infinitely more glamorous than the untamed Scottish Highlands-and her beloved childhood crush. But now that she's decided to find a prospective husband with a bit more polish, could Lachlan finally appreciate her charms? And is it remotely possible to ignore the wild attraction she feels for him?

"One of my very favorite authors." -Julia Quinn

Given her love of food and comfy chairs, she may in fact be a Hobbit. She has written more than 35 romance novels, including traditional Regencies, Historical Romance, and contemporary Romantic Suspense. When she isn't working on her next book she is trying to learn to cook, and wishes she had an English accent. She is the bestselling author of The Scandalous Brides series, The Scandalous Highlanders series, and One Hot Scot.

Lachlan By andrewsheath I loved this book, I loved Rowena that girl amused me and she was just such a joy to read about, "since you are the very portrait of someone not worthy of me, you'll have to expect that I am not going to take your opinion into consideration." With a half growl he leaned a breath closer, looming over her like a living statue of granite." Lachlan he doesn't give up without a fight, "I cannae promise that. I'm a Highlander, and when I see what I want, I do what needs doing to get it." He's quite honest, "so I should've said yer eyes glare at me like an angry wildcat's and yer hair's as black as my own heart? I've nae heard any Sassennach be that honest." I like how Rowena calms her man down, "she kissed his chest. "that's nice of you to say, anyway." Having her brother's blessing his everything, "he cupped her cheek with his free hand. "Ye have my blessing, Rowena. Go kiss the lad before he combusts." With a happy shout Lachlan strode forward and grabbed her, spinning her around to plant a sound kiss on her mouth." I loved this book I can't wait for more from this author.

By Ashley @ The Bear and Thistle I have been waiting and waiting and waiting....for this book to come out. Ms. Enoch is one of my absolute favorite authors and I simply love her writting style. When I finally got my hands on Mad, Bad, and Dangerous in Plaid , I had to immediately sit down and divour the whole thing in one sitting. Now, I have read all of her books, but I'd have to say her Scandalous Highlander's series is my hands down favorite. The first two books in the series, The Devil Wear's Kilts and Rogue with a Brogue were amazing reads. And after reading the third book in the series, I can say that it just keeps getting better and better.Mad, Bad, and Dangerous in Plaid is a stunning Historical Romance, with some of the most witty, charismatic and down right delightful characters I have ever had the pleasure of reading about. It's superbly written, and has a phenomenal plot. I simply loved Lachlan and Winnie ! I do believe I am now head-over-heals in love with Laclan MacTier, (his brogue is simply divine and will have you sighing every time he speaks). When you read about Winnie and Lachlan in the other books in the series, you get an idea of what their story will be like ( or at least I had my own idea) and then when you read their book, well it just blows any idea you had out of the water. It was a riveting, intriguing, adventurous tale that will have you turning page after page and begging for more. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.Suzanne Enoch belongs on every romance lovers bookshelf !- rated 10 stars on my blog

Fun, sexy, it is everything you could want in a read and more. Rowena MacLawry has been in love with Lachlan MacTier since before she could remember. Raised by her brothers, Lachlan is their neighbor, her brother’s chieftain, and a constant fixture in their home and life. The only problem? Lachlan views her as a sister. Finally, coming to her senses on her eighteenth birthday when she’s presented with a pair of riding boots from her One True Love, Rowena flees the Highlands for London and High Society. Three months later with a new accent, she is over her childhood infatuation and ready to settle with someone who loves London and balls and the theatre. With the Earl of Glengask’s wedding on the horizon, Lachlan discovers the woman that Rowena has become, and she finally sees him for the man that he is, not the knight in shining armor she had conjured in her mind. Of course, a love story isn’t complete without shiny English lords, caber tossing, and a Highlands kidnapping. If I could give this story one hundred stars, I would. The story did not drag, and there were several laugh out loud moments that made it complete as a fun romp that you can’t put down until you’ve finished it.

The basis of this book is my initial introduction into combat in Vietnam as a 1st Lieutenant with the Vietnamese Ranger infantry. I was the Deputy Senior Advisor to the Vietnamese 52d Ranger Battalion located at Xuan Loc, Long Kanh Province, III Corps, South Vietnam. The book is 95 percent fact and 5 percent speculation regarding a major action the battalion fought in June of 1967 near the Dong Ngai River, War Zone D. The action begins with a Viet Cong (VC) soldier surrendering to U.S. elements in Long Kanh. He related that a VC company was building a base camp near the Dong Ngai along a stream named Suoi Long. The intelligence led the commanding general of the 18th ARVN Division to assign the task of finding and destroying the camp to the 52d Rangers. The Rangers deployed in less than 24 hours from initial notification to a Landing Zone approximately 2½ kilometers from the reported base camp. The Rangers were immediately engaged and ambushed by a full strength Main Force VC battalion backed by an entire VC regiment, which quickly engaged the trapped Rangers that night and early morning. No U.S. support was available other than long range artillery. In desperation, the Ranger battalion commander, the following morning at dawn, ordered a covering assault into the attacking VC by one company to be followed by a withdrawal under pressure of the remainder of the battalion aided by more than 72 tactical airstrikes within a 45 minute period. As I regrouped into our new perimeter at around 10 a.m., I counted a total of 32 Rangers left from an original assault force of 450. During the Christmas period in December 1967, a number of Ranger prisoners held by the VC during this action were released back to our control as a good will gesture. During the debrief of the ex-POWs, they independently related that they were told by their captors that the entire action was planned at the highest level in order to trap and destroy a major South Vietnamese unit. We had no reason to doubt the authenticity of the report and this book is based on the supposition that it is true. The character of Hu, the informant, and his actions are real. The death of Gen Do, COSVN commander, and the effect of the B-52 Arc Light strike with subsequent movement into Laos, is as the former POWs related to us. The portrayal of Do and his planning briefings are conjecture. The remainder of the description is as I saw the action, the players, and the effects. For this action, the 52d Ranger Battalion was awarded a second U.S. Presidential Unit Citation, one of the very few Vietnamese units to garner two of the highest awards the U.S. can proffer upon a military unit, U.S. or foreign.

Richey The words Keith puts together in describing events in Viet Nam paints a mental picture that is vividly accurate. His experience from being in the field gives him the facts and the intelligent way he writes, I've never found in other books about the War in Viet Nam. For those who have been in Viet Nam, to read Keith's writing, is like being there without having to go back. For those who have never been in war, you'll have a better understanding of what war is.

By General Volney Warner US Army Retired A great read that portrays the roles of leader and led in Vietnam as no other has before..Were it not for the sweaty palms and flashbacks I would read it again. May those who sent us Soldiers to Vietnam read this book for a boots on the ground education beyond compare. Full disclosure, Keith has been a friend for many years. Rush An truly exceptional piece of narrative history based on personal experience and hypothesis, with every word written ringing true to this old infantryman; from an acute sense of the macro relationship between terrain, weather and the forces fighting to the micro of ten feet to the right and left of those fighting, the dead, dying and wounded and the tie in of those pieces that define close combat. Beautifully written, with an eye for detail seldom seen in this type of work, Colonel Nightingale’s prose puts the reader side by side with the participants. As a military historian, I’ve never read a better account of a small unit action by a participant.Robert Sterling Rush, PhDCommand Sergeant Major, USA (ret)Author of Hell in Hürtgen Forest: The Ordeal and Triumph of an American Infantry Regiment.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Finally, some more great Minecraft content. By Maria Caridad Lopez III Steve's Quest to Defeat Herobrine possesses the necessary twist to keep those unfamiliar with the famed franchise interested, and those loyal lovers satisfied. For a graphic novel, the visual diversity within the scenes meets my expectations. And though it may be considered short, it develops the story enough, not leaving any terrible lingering questions. I look forward to the next volume. Finally, some more great Minecraft content. Highly recommended for both Minecraft and comic lovers. Keep up the great work and the superb comics.

On the night of 14/15 April 1912, a brand-new, supposedly unsinkable ship, the largest and most luxurious vessel in the world at the time, collided with an iceberg and sank on her maiden voyage. Of the 2,208 people on board, only 712 were saved. The rest either drowned or froze to death in the icy-cold waters of the North Atlantic. How could this ‘unsinkable’ vessel sink and why did so few of those aboard survive? The authors bring the tragedy to life, telling the story of the ship’s design, construction and maiden voyage. The stories of individuals who sailed on her, many previously known only as names on yellowing passenger and crew lists, are brought to light using rarely seen accounts of the sinking. The stories of passengers of all classes and crew members alike, are explored. They tell the dramatic stories of lives lost and people saved, of the rescue ship Carpathia, and of the aftermath of the sinking. Never again would a large passenger liner sail without lifeboats for all. Despite the tragedy, the sinking of the Titanic indirectly led to untold numbers of lives being saved due to new regulations that came into force after the tragedy. Profusely illustrated, including many rare and unique views of the ship and those who sailed on her, this is as accurate and engrossing a telling of the life of the White Star Line’s Titanic and her sinking as you will read anywhere. Made special by the use of so many rare survivor accounts from the eye witnesses to that night to remember, the narrative places the reader in the middle of the maiden voyage, and brings the tragic sinking to life as never before.

Review 'A must have book... a definitive source' Mike Poirier, Encyclopedia Titanica 'A chance to experience Titanic's story like never before' Shipping Today and Yesterday

From the Author In the years and months leading up to the centennial anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, we - the authors of this book - teamed up to write a Titanic volume which, we hoped, would be like none other written up to that point. We wanted to go back to original accounts and sources, and try to uncover and lay-to-rest as much bad data, misinformation, faulty assumptions, and conspiracy theories as we possibly could in one book. The final result, first released in 2012, was a book of which we were very proud. It received rave reviews from those within the Titanic community and readers in general, and sold out quickly. The new Second Edition of On A Sea of Glass has been printed as of July 3, 2013. While the First Edition of the book has enjoyed nearly unanimous praise from everyone who read it, it was not commonly available in the Americas - something this edition happily rectifies. Additionally, we as the volume's authors took the opportunity to thoroughly revise and improve the text, eradicating a number of spelling or grammar errors which had crept into the first volume. We also added or exchanged a few new images from those which appeared in the First Edition. The new Second Edition has a slightly smaller page size and a new layout, and should prove a real treasure trove of information for all Titanic or maritime enthusiasts. - Tad Fitch, J. Kent Layton & Bill Wormstedt.

From the Inside Flap On the night of 14/15 April 1912, a brand-new, supposedly unsinkable ship, the largest and most luxurious vessel in the world at the time, collided with an iceberg and sank on her maiden voyage. Of the 2,208 people on board, only 712 were saved. The rest either drowned or froze to death in the icy-cold waters of the North Atlantic. How could this supposedly 'unsinkable' vessel sink and why did so few of those aboard survive? The authors bring the tragedy to life, telling the story of the ship's design, construction and maiden voyage. The stories of individuals who sailed on her, many previously known only as names on yellowing passenger and crew lists, are brought to light using rarely-seen accounts of the sinking. The stories of passengers of all classes and crewmembers alike are explored. They tell the dramatic stories of lives lost and people saved, of the rescue ship Carpathia, and of the aftermath of the sinking. Never again would a large passenger liner sail without lifeboats for all.Despite the tragedy, the sinking of the Titanic indirectly led to untold numbers of lives being saved due to new regulations that came into force after the tragedy. Profusely illustrated, including many rare and unique views of the ship and those who sailed on her, this as accurate a telling of the life of the White Star Line's Titanic and her sinking as you will read anywhere. Made special by the use of so many rare survivor accounts from the eyewitnesses to that night to remember, the narrative places the reader in the middle of the maiden voyage, and brings the tragic sinking to life as never before.

As evidence of this, last year's centenary garnered many newly published works on the `unsinkable' ship. While many cannot boast as being either scholarly or original, this book can lay claim to both. "On A Sea of Glass" is a culmination of several years of research and dedication by its authors to the accurate telling of Titanic's history. Written in a narrative format, "On A Sea of Glass" follows the ship's entire journey from birth, through her brief and memorable voyage across the Atlantic, and the aftermath of her demise. The narrative is broken down in such detail that the reader will catch themselves thinking "Are we still in Belfast?!" or "Are we still in Southampton?!". Rather than rushing ahead no stone is left unturned, and one will need to read this book several times to fully grasp and appreciate all the details. As with any scholarly work worthy of the annals of great Titanic literature, each statement is carefully referenced to a first person or original account. The two inquiries into the disaster are referred to several times, so access to them (through the internet) for further reading is important. The breakdown of the book is as follows:Introduction (by noted Titanic author and past Titanic Historical Society vice-president George Behe)Author's Note: A Century and CountingPrologueChapter 1: A Legend is BornChapter 2: An Auspicious CrossingChapter 3: The Eve of DisasterChapter 4: Rendezvous with DestinyChapter 5: The Losing BattleChapter 6: On `A Sea of Glass'Chapter 7: In the Wake of a LegendChapter 8: The Eternal EchoesAppendix A: Titanic's Technical Specifications and Some Common MisconceptionsAppendix B: Southampton to CherbourgAppendix C: The Question of BinocularsAppendix D: What Time Is It?Appendix E: Taking Evasive ActionAppendix F: The Iceberg DamageAppendix G: The Duff Gordon AffairAppendix H: Incidents of Gunfire During the SinkingAppendix I: The Loss of Deck Crew on the Titanic Over TimeAppendix J: The Music of the Titanic's BandAppendix K: Shots in the Dark: Did an Officer Commit Suicide on the Titanic?Appendix L: Thomas Andrew's FateAppendix M: Down With the Ship? Captain Smith's FateAppendix N: The BreakupAppendix O: `J. "Brute" Ismay'?Appendix P: Buried At Sea?Appendix Q: Trapped `Like Rats'?Appendix R: The Californian AffairPostscriptsEndnotesPhoto Credits/ Acknowledgements/ IndexChapters 1-8 is the narrative portion of the book, including much new and previously undiscovered information instead of the same rehash of familiar annecdotes and stories. One key feature of this book is the extensive appendices which take up one third of the book. The appendices detail more controversial and thorny subjects, and lay to rest often misquoted and misjudged elements of Titanic's history. Of particular note (and an interest to this reader), is the detailing of the ships journey from Southampton to Cherbourg, her first port of call. This is one aspect of Titanic's voyage never covered in depth in other books on the subject.Included in the middle of the book is an extensive colour section of some breathtaking images of various publicity photos, a colour copy of the title image, and some very clear images of Olympic's (Titanic's sister ship) interiors located at the White Swan hotel in Alnwick, England. Located throughout the text are also several black and white images referring back to the story, and many have never been seen before. This is a heavy book well put together; the binding is sound and the editing is solid. There is the odd spelling error, and errors in timing (pm instead of am and vice versa), however this doesn't take away from the spectacular quality of the book as a whole. These various errors pertain to the first edition of the book and have been corrected, I am told, for the second printing due for release soon. My quibble is that I would have liked to have seen the foot notes located at the end of each chapter, rather than included all together at the end of the book. An extensive bibliography at the end would have been a welcome addition as well. This Titanic book should be top of your list of purchases! I cannot recommend it any more highly than I already have in this review. It is an engaging read, worthy of several hours of in-depth analysis, and will appeal to the die-hard enthusiast as well as the casual reader wanting to learn more about Titanic's history.

It is fairly rare in the U.S. Chock full of fantastic pictures, black and white and color, many of them not seen before. Also has some color pictures of the fittings of the Olympic, now used in a dining room in a hotel in England. Stunning. If you are a big fan of Titanic, or historian, as I am, and want to add to your collection, I highly recommend this wonderful book. It is an over-sized coffee table book, but well worth every penny for its factual and interesting narrative and marvelous pictures. Truly a memorable tribute to Titanic.

An absolutely first-rate Titanic book By Bruce Trinque Yes, I know that "On a Sea of Glass" is at present at least available at Amazon only through the "these sellers" option, but for any Titanic enthusiast going that extra mile to get a copy is definitely warranted, Some months back I reviewed "Report into the Loss of the SS Titanic: A Centennial Reappraisal" as being the ultimate book for Titanic buffs. Well, on that basis, "On a Sea of Glass" must be "ultimater".It would be difficult to be too extravagant in praise of this book. It features a very strong comprehensive narrative laying out the whole story of Titanic's tale, illustated by hundreds of excellent photographs and diagrams. It is a narrative that can be read with real profit by any intelligent novice to Titanic studies (and a genuine pleasure for any confirmed Titanic buff). And that narrative is accompanied by numerous appendices that explore Titanic debates, controversies, and mysteries in meticulous detail and analysis.I cannot adequately express my admiration of the work put into this volume by three of the best Titanic students active today (four, if you count George Behen for his foreword and appendix work). And I doubt that anyone in the foreseeable future is likely to match, let alone exceed, the quality of this book on this subject.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Modern economic sociology with a long-term view By R. Kelly Wagner When these authors talk about long-term history, they are including hominid cultures in prehistorical Europe, and Asian and African cultures, not just historical Eurocentrism. They discuss how Marx and Weber sidestep everything except European experience, and how consideration of multiple civilizations shows that social development is not a straight line. There are not many other sociology books I've read whose bibliographies include articles such as "Hominid Use of Fire in the Lower and Middle Pleistocene." Of course, since I'm not a sociologist, there's much I don't know - perhaps there are many other such books out there. But I certainly didn't find them while collecting a shelf-full for a grad-school sociology course (required for a major in another social science). This was one of the most readable of the 30 or so books I plowed through. The main concept the authors wish to convey is that history (and sociology) should not be concerned only with chronology, but also with long-term processes. Stages, or phases, have been commented on by previous sociologists, most of them having the view either that the stages showed a steady progress upward - or a steady deterioration downward. Life has either degenerated from a golden age to a machine age, or we are now the most civilized the world has ever been in all things. In both cases, the main concerns of such authors were primarily to explain conditions in the author's present world by showing how these had arisen out of previous conditions. Such stages were a favorite of 19th-century sociologists and anthropologists. However, twentieth century authors may have gone too far in rejecting stage models; our authors here feel that both chronology and "phaseology" should be taken into account. This leads the authors to "processes."One of the most useful concepts presented is the authors' view of the major transformations in society: from a stage where there were no societies with control over fire, agriculture, or mechanical industry, to a stage where some societies controlled some of those, to a stage where some societies control all of those areas. Then, we can place particular societies into context - if we call a particular society "agrarian", is it coexisting with many other agrarian societies? Or with industrial societies? Are they on their way toward an industrial society? There is then a chapter showing the relationship between agrarian societies and religion; the function of priests as determiners of when it is time to plant is illustrated by both historic and not-too-long-ago examples. This is followed by a look at how an agrarian culture leads to socially stratified societies, and to warrior classes, and how the subsequent "taming" of warriors is a necessary element for further social development. This book is somewhat academic, but not dense with jargon. It is not extremely heavy reading, and can be understood by someone without an intensive knowledge of sociology or economics. It's helpful if the reader is at least familiar with the names of such theorists as Marx, Spencer, Weber; for someone who has been introduced to those theorists in an undergraduate sociology class, and is looking for a more modern point of view from which to start a term paper or other further study, this book is a good starting point. Its multicultural viewpoint that includes Asian and African civilizations will be a welcome change from the Eurocentrism of the older theorists, and should also appeal to the professor for whom a student might be writing such a paper. Because of its title, it might not immediately come to such a reader's attention - since history, rather than social development, is in the title, some might pass over it. That would be a mistake.
