Crabs versus The World. All species in the world evolve…except one. Cancer Simplicimus Vulgaris, or the square crab, has suffered with the same evolutionary defect for millennia: it cannot change direction. Condemned to walk in one straight line forever, these crabs living along the Gironde estuary have largely resigned themselves to their fate. However, one seemingly ordinary summer, three crabs decide to take matters into their own claws and rebel against the straight and narrow path they have been sentenced to, upending the entire ecosystem in the process. From critically-acclaimed French illustrator and animator Arthur de Pins comes the first volume in his hilarious and touching trilogy about scuttling towards your own destiny.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Lovely art, cute story, but missing something By E. Aldworth Ever wondered about the lives of those little crabs underfoot at the beach? This graphic novel begins a trilogy that does just that: examining the lives of one species in particular, the square crab, and how it is destined to traverse the same path for the entirety of its life, which is tough luck if you are born between two rocks or litter. Three brave little crabs, Sunny, Boater, and Guitar, begin to challenge this idea through collaboration and moxie. While it's a cute little story that says something about the very human issues of conformity and stagnation. the writing is beyond heavy-handed and I have no desire to seek out the other two volumes in the future. With that said, the artwork is wonderful. It reminds me of art deco illustration that relies on a very narrow palette of blue-greens and orange-browns. Arthur de Pins gives these crustaceans real character, but the story was too thin to keep my interest. At one point, a nature documentarian wonders who will buy their film on these crabs. It's a slightly meta moment that recognizes this is an unlikely subject for a graphic novel that might be a tough sell for most people.Recommended for graphic novel fans to skim through in the library.

I had been seeing some men. Not frequently. Not seriously but, I had been seeing them. Trouble was, none of them were seeing me. They looked at me. They were sometimes with me, engaged with me but, I never felt like I was being seen. I wondered what it would be like. I wondered if any man would ever stop and really see me. Seth did. I thought and then I thought no... He’s seeing past me. Is this what I have to look forward to for the rest of my life? This is NOT some table-thumping tome that will end up unread and gathering dust on your virtual bookshelf – this is simply a well-written romantic short story that will have you flipping over the pages in feverish anticipation – perfect for a lunch break or when you have some time to kill!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. FINALLY! UDON STUDIOS PUTS THE STREET FIGHTER COMIC BOOK FRANCHISE BACK ON TRACK!..YES!..FIVE HURRICANE KICKS WAY HIGH! By cornbreadthedog Yeah, I know. I gotta' come clean with it!I was not madly in love with the last graphic novel volume of STREET FIGHTER by UDON STUDIOS. I reviewed it kind of hard only because I really love the first STREET FIGHTER universe and I am one of the franchise's biggest fans who had some high expectations! Plus, I got really tired of the same ol' "dark hado" storyline. I mean UDON STUDIOS outdid themselves with the first series of STREET FIGHTER comics and graphic novels. Yet, I never should have doubted UDON STUDIOS. Volume 1 was merely a slow set-up for this book right here!I can't believe that I'm about to say this but....SUPER STREET FIGHTER- VOLUME 2: HYPER FIGHTING is piping-hot awesomeness with a side-order of "awww, snaps"!So many great fights! Lots of drama and crazy-mad action! Amazing signature moves! Superb manga/anime artwork with some sweet backgrounds! This is off the hook, kid! I've read this book 15 times and can't put it down! Dude, UDON STUDIOS has artistically and brilliantly soaked the whole STREET FIGHTER comic book universe in CAPCOM gasoline and then burned this mother so hot that the fans can see it for miles and miles,son!OOOOH!...I really loved the BONUS STAGE stories in the book, with the exception of the DAN HIBIKI one (please, UDON, no more DAN HIBIKI stories)! My favorites were HONG KONG HUSTLE (starring SEAN, CHUN-LI, and KEN MASTERS) and SQUARED CIRCLE SLAM (starring R. MIKA, HUGO, and POISON)! If anyone from UDON STUDIOS is reading my review, please do me a super-huge favor and make the BONUS STAGE stories even longer! They totally rocked! You know, I'm really glad that I doubled back and decided to check this book out. I must say, UDON STUDIOS has got me really thirsty and hungry for the next volume....In four words? ... BALROG, VEGA, GUILE!..NEXT!(Awww, yeah! SONIC BOOM, snitches!)...LOL...LOL...LOL...

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not the best one... By Juan meh, is fine and i like the story-ish...but now it feels like Udon has lost its original spark and they are just throwing tittles with cool covers but mediocre content and art.ever since Omar Dogan and Alvin Lee stop being the main artist (or at least thats how it feel like it), the quality certainly dropped. i hate having to bash on one of my favorite comic companies. but to be honest some artist that were hired to work on some of the scenes or stories did not do a well enough job to sell it. the art felt too amateur or even cartoony (those artist shouldve been focus on small side stories like in the original comics), i really want to know why they would give up quantity for quality.luckily Long vo, chamba and Omar were able to only add a few pages in, but it wasn't enough to feel that what i bought was worth it.still fine and i will keep it, but the i feel their golden age is slowly diminishing...

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I liked it alot By Visa I liked it alot. The art was really good and if you forgot what happened in the first book New Generation, it was easy to pick back up. I thought the idea of sakura learning and using the dark hadou was kind of silly, but the rest of the comic was good. The later you read in the book, I think the more interesting and better it gets. So definitely get if you are a fan of all the characters, but most definitely get it if you like the whole story of Ryu, Akuma and Gouken.

By Mark Willie Even though we're still in our honeymood period and only been married for a year, I grabbed this book to see if there is something new I can surprise my wifey with on our 1st Anniversary on the 18th of March. This book explains the importance of sex in a relationship and about non-sexual bonding which is really important too. There are some great sex positions for beginners and some expert ones too. Good book!

Pete Townshend was once asked how he prepared himself for The Who's violent live performances. His answer? 'Pretend you're in a war.' For a band as prone to furious infighting as it was notorious for acts of 'auto-destructive art' this could have served as a motto.

Between 1964 and 1969 The Who released some of the most dramatic and confrontational music of the decade, including 'I Can't Explain', 'My Generation' and 'I Can See For Miles'. This was a body of work driven by bitter rivalry, black humour and dark childhood secrets, but it also held up a mirror to a society in transition. Now, acclaimed rock biographer Mark Blake goes in search of its inspiration to present a unique perspective on both The Who and the sixties.

From their breakthrough as Mod figureheads to the rise and fall of psychedelia, he reveals how The Who, in their explorations of sex, drugs, spirituality and class, refracted the growing turbulence of the time. He also lays bare the colourful but crucial role played by their managers, Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp. And - in the uneasy alliance between art-school experimentation and working-class ambition - he locates the motor of the Swinging Sixties.

As the decade closed, with The Who performing Tommy in front of 500,000 people at the Woodstock Festival, the 'rock opera' was born. In retrospect, it was the crowning achievement of a band who had already embraced pop art and the concept album; who had pioneered the power chord and the guitar smash; and who had embodied - more so than any of their peers - the guiding spirit of the age: war.

Pete Townshend on how he prepares for a Who concert. With all the books about The Who and late '60s rock music/bands/musicians, this book, by Mark Blake, is actually one of the better reads if you want to know what things were like for and around The Who in their formative/early years. Beginning with a Who gig at the Marquee in Soho with Daltrey taking a shotgun away from a gunman bent on revenge, the band then went on to totally destroy their instruments with little regard for the patrons or themselves. And so begins this look at not only The Who, but the Mod period and the sixties era in general. From their first gigs as The Detours to The High Numbers, to possible new names like The Hair, The No One, The Hair and The Who (which the band decided sounded "too much like a pub."), to their final name (which everyone in the band laughed at), the first days of the band are recounted with snippets of recent interviews from people who were there."Every time I smashed a guitar I saw my grandmother's face." Pete Townshend."The Who won't last that long." Pete Townshend. From the band's early days as "leaders" of the Mod movement, into the psychedelic years of the '60s, this is a good, interesting look at that whole period. And while other books have covered this period in England, Blake has done extensive research into all things connected with The Who during this period which give his book a distinct leg up on his subjects. Not only the band but their managers are looked at in detail to help tell the story of working class-art school members of the band and their uneasy relationship with both Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp. That the band and their management didn't see eye to eye is well known to fans, but the author has delved deeper into both manager's lives to form a good picture of why neither men got along with the band. That portion of the book is well worth reading because it helps form a much better picture of the relationship between the band and their managers."All great art is crap." Kit Lambert."I was a horrible little sod." Roger Daltrey."We wanted The Who to be like Miles Davis meets Johnny Kidd and the Pirates." An early Who manifesto by Richard Barnes and Pete Townshend. The early days before the band came together helps set the scene and shines some light on why the band members never seemed to truly come together as a band--they were always prone to fighting amongst themselves. Plus the music just before rock 'n' roll--"trad jazz" and skiffle--is looked at in some depth, with that music helping to lay the foundation for the band's eventual formation. Daltrey (for example) tried (unsuccessfully) to play guitar in an early skiffle band ("Basically he couldn't play."), while 12 year old Pete Townshend began to play the guitar (" a cheap guitar of the kind you'd see hanging on the wall of a Spanish restaurant"), and met John Entwistle. But as Townshend said, "The Who are four people who shouldn't be in a band together". And so it goes."The Who didn't really do peace and love." Roger Daltrey."I felt as if a bomb had gone off in my head...I had to find something to fill the empty space." Pete Townshend. The book goes on to describe the songs, the singles, the albums, the concerts, the drugs, the spiritual quests, and the many people in the band's orbit during the "swinging sixties". For anyone who wants a good inside look at The Who and that entire era, the author has done his homework in laying out in an easy to read and digest manner most everything of interest connected to the band during these early and exciting (and arguably best) years of the band's career. There's 16 pages of b&w photos from different periods that help tell the story--many of them rarely seen before. All in all this is well worth adding to your music shelf if you're either/and a fan of The Who in the '60s/the sixties music scene in Britain."I could point that guitar at my dad and say, 'Bang! You're dead!'". Pete Towhshend on discovering the guitar.

In-depth review of a welcome study on the Who's birth and growth By John L Murphy While Mods and The Who inevitably join together in many fans' minds, the band's ties to modernism, in art and culture, have not received the in-depth attention they deserve. To address these contexts, Mark Blake incorporates many years of interviews with Pete Townshend, John Entwistle and Roger Daltrey, adding material gleaned from multimedia and previous books on the band. As an editor at Qand Mojo magazines, and a biographer of Queen and Pink Floyd, Blake fits in comfortably with rock journalism. He presents in Pretend You're in a War a solid study of the band's birth and growth during the 1960s.While this narrative momentum is thwarted by the tendency of Townshend to tell one story to one journalist and another to another scribe a few years later, and further complicated by the reticence of Entwistle, the demise of Keith Moon and the determination of Daltrey to get his side of the record straight (all four sometimes seem at odds with other bandmates and witnesses), the members invigorate Blake's account. They were a fractious four who insisted on autonomy even as they combined their talents to make rousing music. Blake offers a readable and accessible consideration of the band's origins, its tensions early on and its struggles as fame took over.Blake treats the emergence of the band, their early musical ambitions and their early members, especially drummer Doug Sandow, who was edged out before Moon was recruited. The detail here surpasses other treatments I have read, so those less obsessed by history may find the research too meticulous. Fans may argue for its necessity; it exposes The Who's deep London roots.Townshend's tutelage at Ealing Art School under Gustav Metzger, known for action painting, and Roy Ascott, known for cybermetrics and confrontation, earns welcome inclusion; I wish more had been given over to these impacts on the guitarist's formative years. Townshend embraced a liberating lifestyle along with the music. He plunged into London's swirl of art, books, and films as part of this cultural upheaval. Again, his prescient immersion into home taping and mechanical recording techniques is astonishing, and deserved more depth here; Townshend mastered intricacies of production rapidly.Despite some production oversight being left to the band's managers, the spirited pair of East End-bred Chris Stamp and Oxbridge-tutored scion and heir to a classical music pedigree, Kit Lambert, Townshend took much of the band's control away from Daltrey. Relegated to the mike, as his confidence grew, Daltrey became a powerful, more nuanced vocalist. This took years, as his wish to guide the band competed against Townshend's technical skills and formidable ego. But Daltrey by decade's end channeled Townshend's lyrical gifts and vulnerable sensibility into his own cocky, strutting and preening presence. The book's title comes from Townshend's attitude when the band, held up as Mod models, took the stage. While their managers contended, while the guitarist and singer bickered and fought for leadership, so the stoic bassist Entwistle and the manic drummer Moon sought their share of the Who's spotlight. The band ascended quickly into the top ranks, but preceded by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Kinks, The Who had to catch up to talented peers and rivals. The Kinks especially competed with The Who sonically and lyrically from the mid-1960s on, and Blake documents this contest well. The mythic Mod connection was pushed more by management and media, as Townshend longed to speak to his fans from that cohort, but the Mods themselves never lasted very long. "'A powerful, aggressive little army' with its mysterious dress code, music, dances and semiotics" sums up for Blake the unity of The Who and Mods. Yet equally crucial were the art school lessons Townshend learned from modernism.Mentors such as Ascott, Metzger and Helmut Gorden (the most eccentric of many contenders) merit mention, and Blake notes their suggestions to an eager student. Townshend merged pop art into the classical tastes of Lambert. He integrated Henry Purcell and music-hall into three-minute ditties, often singles, which conveyed in Blake's phrasing "black humour and sexual perversion" as "cameos, essays of human experience."The "visual gimmick" accidentally invented at Harrow's Railway Hotel (Blake evokes its shabby ambiance well) when Townshend smashed his guitar led to a routine. Moon destroyed his kit, Daltrey lassoed his microphone, Entwistle stood stock still on the side. Townshend loved and hated this. His frustration at rock-star poses led to his own changes, in his lyrics, his music, and then his attire. He chose before decade's end his workmanlike white boiler suit and Doc Martens as onstage fashion, contrasting with his three colorful bandmates.Moon, under Lambert's sway, found pills, expensive champagne and excess inviting. Entwistle succumbed to drink and drugs, if in a quiet, self-critical manner. His musical talents shone in the band, but not enough compared to the main songwriter. Entwistle longed for his ideas to be accepted more by the band, which under Townshend's dominance roused Daltrey's understandable resistance. Unlike The Beatles circa 1966, one senses The Who did not close ranks out of friendship so much as necessity, when songs had to be constructed and tours had to be endured, to pay the bills that the lavish lifestyles of the band required. Blake leaps from the band members getting by in flats or living with their parents to mansions, driving luxury autos (more than one meeting a quick demise) and indulging in conspicuous consumption with barely any transition. Perhaps the band's entry into the upper ranks of British rock happened that fast. What wearied The Who, barely into their career, was the pace they had to keep to stay on the charts, on tour and in the studio. 1965-1966 as recounted here resembles the last stages of The Beatles. At least, unlike that foursome or the Stones, the machinations of Allen Klein to take over The Who's finances were fended off by Lambert, Stamp and Townshend. Yet, the band by the close of 1966 lacked continuity or consistency in their releases; the experimentation of Jimi Hendrix, Cream and Pink Floyd signaled an era far from Mods vs. Rockers. Townshend's "story-songs" struggled at times to chart.By then, the drug culture which consumed the Mods had soured for the lead songwriter. He distanced himself from the scene, even as he loved spending money and acting out his artistic ambitions. This bifurcation helped his music, however. The guitarist's decision to turn to Meher Baba is well-known, but it did, as Blake shows, ease Townshend's egotistical compulsion. He appreciated the awareness of the damage done by his insistence on pushing limits and refusing to listen to the wisdom of his comrades. That drive enabled Townshend to rise above his peers and to reign as a young eminence, but it also aroused his disgust with the contradictions a rock celebrity's career represented, if that star spoke for pure intentions.Meanwhile, the bassist connived, sometimes with a drummer bent on hotel-room smashing, while the singer gave up Dippity-Do. Daltrey groomed a leonine mane atop his buckskin vest and rugged, tanned physique. Among a homely band, he stood out. Despite or due to his short stature, he grew into the role that Townshend and he had worked out, as the confident voice for the guitarist's torments and triumphs.Blake regales readers with many familiar stories. Townshend's versions, whether set down in his 2012 autobiography or as venerable, conversational anecdotes, can differ with each other as well as with bandmates. Daltrey gets his own words in, with similar contradictions now and then. The truth of Moon's legendary Holiday Inn debacle in Flint, Michigan, or what song Jimmy Page did or did not play on, may never be known, but it is fun following the narratives as these moments enter rock star lore. Blake strives to keep straight who said what to whom and when. This accuracy enhances this book's value. (A recommended archive, although it may have appeared too late in 2014 for consultation, is not cited: Mike Segretto's The Who FAQ [see my review]. Otherwise, Blake blends smoothly many standard sources on the band into his presentation.)The albums themselves gain short shrift; track-by-track commentary is not Blake's intent. He emphasizes the band's nature more than their recordings, although Lambert's suggestions get due credit, as does the input of Daltrey, Entwistle and Moon to what seems soon after the start Townshend's band. Blake depicts vivid scenes: touring with Herman's Hermits, sparring at Monterey with Jimi Hendrix, making money from and losing even more for Track Records. The "financial profligacy" of the Who grew as troubled, feckless Lambert gave in to the addictions which would eventually consume first the drummer and much later the bassist. This hedonism met with the singer's disdain and the guitarist's ambivalence. Amidst hippie excess, Townshend "felt like a workman in a lunatic asylum, come to fix the plumbing." But both Townshend and Daltrey celebrated the onstage energy of the band, which reached its peak, in the studio and in concert, as ornamented productions on {Tommy} warped into massive assaults, performed live.Even muddy Woodstock worked, despite three-quarters of the band accidentally on acid. Shunted aside to open their set at 4 a.m., luck came their way. They started "See Me, Feel Me" as dawn broke.Blake ducks out as the story gets good, for the decade ended before the band sustained or perhaps surpassed its 1969-1970 breakthroughs in albums and on tours. Blake provides a brief coda summing up the next decade, but one closes this narrative hoping for the author to return, and to follow this with a complete look at the next seven or eight years. The book ends in 1970, not 1969. But as many claim along with the author, "The Sixties" did not begin until nearly mid-decade. That counterculture period of creativity and chaos ended nearly ten years after The Who as we know them assembled, to make their unsteady climb to near or at the top of British rock. There, they won their war, amid very strong competition, during what remain the best years of that music, and arguably much more in art and culture, as this book demonstrates.

He provides the answersand offers a lot of fascinating insights with it. Don't expect a story of band, but if you are interested in what made them tick, this book delivers.

Can't judge a book by its cover By E.Capri I know I'm going to be odd man out because I'm giving this story a 5 star rating but let me tell you why. First off I found the character of Carrie Richardson refreshing and the storyline as many have said is a bit Cinderella-ish, but only in the way that Alexeis is mega wealthy and to all at first glance Carrie appears to be poor as a church mouse with the brains to match, but I like the fact that the author allowed us to believe that and fed us bits and pieces into Carrie's true character as the story progressed. I know there are enough reviewers who will say that Carrie was a bimbo or she was portrayed as such by the author, but what those who read it missed was that Carrie herself never believed herself to be stupid or inferior to Alexeis she was just not use to his lifestyle and she never spoke on topics that he and his friends were fluent in i.e. art, theater the whose who in their mega rich world and their goings on, because Carrie could honestly say she knew nothing about those things because her own world before meeting Alexeis revolved around science and research and her parents where both scholarly people whose lives were immersed in their lives as said scholars. I think its rather unfair to class her as a "bimbo" because she happen to meet someone who was willing to spoil her, although to be fair he was misguided in thinking she was two bricks short of a load in the intellect department, but the author did a good job of putting human error, flaw and prejudice on display. This book really gives meaning to the saying "Still waters run deep". It's a book that I personally enjoyed and lets be honest ladies we don't purchases these books for their "realism" its fantasy and a chance to escape a bit, so for those who keep harping that its "unrealistic" or "stupid" do yourselves a favor and stop spending your money on them or take them out from your local library or pick a different genre to read about. Happy Reading

By Sparkles Brown The book started off with the usual fairytale theme we romance readers like - hero meets heroine then picks her up off the street (like a common hooker) for a one night stand. The 'poor' heroine is swept into a world of money, luxury and power just as the blurb says but the story goes downhill from there. The `hero' is condescending toward the heroine's lack of education (To be fair to him she acted like the typical dumb and I do mean dumb blonde)and uses and manipulates her for his own selfish reasons. He then later proceeds to try and win her back. The author made us believe the only thing she was smart enough to do was serve drinks then *** SPOILER COMING UP*** at the end turns out she is actually some sort of genius with a PhD - researching a break through cure for cancer - moonlighting as the dumb blonde bimbo girlfriend. The author then proceeds to change the hero from a globe trotting super-financier, billionaire tycoon to a soft mushy mouthed regular Joe who actually gives up the high life to live in the country side (of all places) with the (now genius) heroine in order to support her doing further cancer research.???????? Yeah Right!!!!!The title is misleading also. She did not become anybody's wife until almost the very last page. There are also pages of dialogue dedicated to just introspection on both characters' parts which could have been restricted to a paragraph or two and did not particularly add anything special to the story. Oh, the heroine also spends quite a bit of the book with her head turned to the wall. LITERALLY. SOOO DISAPPOINTING. I CAN SAFELY SAY I WILL NEVER READ ANOTHER BOOK BY THIS AUTHOR AGAIN.

16 of 22 people found the following review helpful. wow, this was not romance at all By bhr If you're looking to read what life as a harlot is like, by all means, read this.We have an "hero" who is really a big, rich loser who picks up some arm-candy off the street. He treats her like a whore... think Pretty Woman treatment. If you thought Pretty Woman was romantic, I suppose this would be romantic. Our Heroine is just as bad, allowing herself to sleep with a stranger because he's hot and loaded. At the end, she's shocked to be called a whore, but realizes, DUH, that's just what she's been. The other review goes into more frustrating detail about this, so I'll spare you. The heroine does have SOME mitigating circumstances. I suppose the hero does, also. Mostly, though, their behavior is hateable and their, especially his, attitudes are just awful.I found the writing to be decent, and the characters to be, although pretty unlikable, well drawn. I would NOT classify this as romance, because all it is? shallow sex. Ick. I guess I'm old.(*)>

Colonial Adventure is the second book in the Colonial Historical Fiction Series and the story goes thus: Colonial Adventure is a graphic novella written in rhythmic prose depicting a slice of British colonial history (1936—1977) as experienced by individuals on both sides of the racial conflict. It begins with a British couple who leave the sophistication of London to establish a large agricultural operation in what was then Southern Rhodesia, later Rhodesia and now Zimbabwe. With the rise of Black Nationalism, the black majority rebels leading to a brutal civil war that has a severe impact on the two families, one black and one white, whose lives the story follows. Of the shorter stories, also written in rhythmic prose, one concerns a female architect from Haiti, another a young boy abandoned at a country fair by his mother and a third addresses an over-reaction in the climate of fear surrounding Islam. The fourth story portrays an outrage committed against a teenager seeking to free herself from family domination, while the last tale is a dramatic monologue conducted by an African dictator. Granted it's short and had lots of pictures, but I'd intended to read a few pages and then go to bed, and instead I just wanted to keep reading until I reached the end. I have not really read a story written in rhythmic prose before, so I have nothing to compare this too, but it had me completely engrossed in the colonial history of Africa, and seemed to be a great way to span a great number of years in a short story. I only rarely even felt like I was missing out on stuff I normally expect from my stories. There were areas where the grammar and spelling were not very good, although I believe most of those are attributable to the style of writing used and probably also some cultural differences, but they were a little jarring for me, and for that I detracted one star from my rating.Copy received through the Goodreads First Reads giveaway program.

I know that statement makes little sense. The stories represent the troubled world we occupy. I can only say that if you have little time, but want a good story that runs deep, Colonial Adventure is totally worth your time!

The book has thorough research but does not shy from adding the human element. Penn Traffic is another regional department store chain that disappeared in the changing retail environment of the last 40 years. The Penn Traffic Company is studied in a manner that offers insight into how the company changed and eventually collapsed, all with photographs, old advertising and anecdotes from former employees and customers. I too once sat on Santa's lap in the Johnstown store (1960's) and I later frequented the PT store in a nearby town, begging my mother to buy me "PF Flyers" there. A nice piece of nostalgia for those living in western and central Pennsylvania where such fascinating stores have now been replaced by the generic, boxy and boring WalMarts.

Michael is a bit of a bore; at first he's stern and serious, and later he’s neutered and neutral. Thankfully, his relationship with Janice can be fixed with a red pen and some patience. Bailey York is an aspiring romance novelist, and she's having trouble turning Michael into a leading man worthy of both Janice and publication. When she runs into dashing Parker Davidson on the train, she may have found both her muse and her hero.

I think the publisher should have to republished it under the same name. I purchased this book thinking it was a new book by Debbie Macomber but after I purchased it I found out I had already read it under another title. I like the author Debbie Macomber but this is not the first time one of her books was republished under another name.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A romance for romance writers By Aletheia Tamewitz Romance writer Bailey York is through with love in real life after being left nearly at the altar twice. Then she meets Parker Davidson, who is the epitome of everything she wants the hero of her book to be. Will she be content with merely writing about him, or will she let him be the hero in her real life? In this book, Macomber cleverly addresses the faults in how the hero is written in the typical romance novel, and in doing so highlights how much different, how much more real the character of Parker is. It's funny, insightful, unique, and something I have read over and over for years. I'm sure anyone who reads it once will do the same!

"It was dawn before I fell asleep, and later in the morning I was only half-awake as I fed a fresh sheet of paper into the typewriter and began to copy the notes from the previous day out of my book. But I wasn't too weary to type the date line firmly as if I'd been writing date lines all my life: from the front at iwo jima march 5-- Then I remembered and added two words. under fire-- They looked great." In 1965, Wisconsin native Georgette "Dickey" Chapelle became the first female American war correspondent to be killed in action. Now, "Dickey Chapelle Under Fire" shares her remarkable story and offers readers the chance to experience Dickey's wide-ranging photography, including several photographs taken during her final patrol in Vietnam. Dickey Chapelle fought to be taken seriously as a war correspondent and broke down gender barriers for future generations of female journalists. She embedded herself with military units on front lines around the globe, including Iwo Jima and Okinawa, the Dominican Republic, and Vietnam. Dickey sometimes risked her life to tell the story--after smuggling aid to refugees fleeing Hungary, she spent almost two months in a Hungarian prison. For twenty-five years, Dickey's photographs graced the pages of "National Geographic," the "National Observer," "Life," and others. Her tenacity, courage, and compassion shine through in her work, highlighting the human impact of war while telling the bigger story beyond the battlefield. In "Dickey Chapelle Under Fire," the American public can see the world through Dickey's lens for the first time in almost fifty years, with a foreword by Jackie Spinner, former war correspondent for "The Washington Post."

Review

Publisher's Weekly Starred Review- Garofolo, an Iraq War veteran and former entertainment industry executive, assembles the first-ever collection of the work of Georgette "Dickey" Chappelle, who pursued a photojournalism career at a time when practically no women did, beginning in WWII. The Wisconsin native's love of aviation and photography led her to abandon her studies at MIT and hang around military bases instead. She flunked out, married, and persuaded the Navy—despite her Navy husband's objections—to let her cover the front lines in the Pacific. Chapelle eagerly went on to cover events in Hungary, Algeria, Cuba, Lebanon, the Dominican Republic, and, fatefully, Vietnam. Despite winning awards for her work, she struggled for assignments; when she got them, she earned less pay than her male counterparts. Her arresting black and white photos capture lasting scenes: grotesquely wounded soldiers, children caught in conflict, and summary executions of combatants. But it's a colleague's photo that haunts this book: the 47-year-old Chapelle laying mortally wounded after being hit by shrapnel while on patrol with Marines in South Vietnam. The commandant of the Marine Corps called Chapelle "one of us," and her body of work surely deserves the wider recognition this book provides. 153 b&w photos. (Publisher's Weekly Starred review, Sept. 2015) John Garofolo's work is not only a fine read, it is a must for any who have experienced combat, especially those of us who continue to tell the Marine Corps story. (Capt Jack T. Paxton, USMC (Ret,) Leatherneck Magazine, November 2015) Dickey Chapelle Under Fire  is a moving important legacy to Dickey Chapelle as well as the many men and woman who run head first into harm's way in order to protect those present, left behind, as well as humanity as a whole. For that I believe it should be included in all Library, Historical and Art History Collections as a record of the First American Female Correspondent Killed in Action, her work, and the unsettling history of the time. (Karen Chutsky, Chutsky's Bookshelf, Midwest Book Review, February 2016) Chapelle’s courage and unflagging determination are an example for all, and, thankfully, John Garofolo’s Dickey Chapelle Under Fire brings her little-known story and work into the light. Garofolo has studied her work for over 20 years, and this book is a wonderful (and needed) step in recognizing Chapelle’s contribution to photojournalism. (Jenny Montgomery, PhotoLife, March 8, 2016)

By Mike O'Connor Until recently, Dickey Chapelle, who was a trailblazer for female war correspondents, has been lost in the fogs of time due to her tragic death early in the Vietnam War. Fortunately, John Garofolo's newly-published DICKEY CHAPELLE UNDER FIRE, PHOTOGRAPHS BY THE FIRST AMERICAN FEMALE WAR CORRESPONDENT KILLED IN ACTION, restores Chapelle to her rightful place of honor. A 2015 Wisconsin Historical Society Press release, Garofolo's book demonstrates what a crack photographer Chapelle was.A Milwaukee native, Georgette Louise Meyer's early dreams of being an aerial explorer like her hero, Admiral Richard Byrd, were subverted by her mother who directed the young girl's energies into writing. Ever the dutiful daughter, Georgette - who adopted the nickname 'Dickey' in honor of Byrd - took up writing but maintained her interest in flying. After flunking out of M.I.T., Chapelle's writing career took off, eventually landing her a spot with TWA's New York publicity department. There she met Tony Chapelle and they married in 1940. In 1941 she sold her first photo essay to LOOK magazine. When her husband enlisted in the Navy after Pearl Harbor, Chapelle obtained military press credentials and the rest is history. In 1945, she covered the battles for Okinawa and Iwo Jima. She subsequently covered the rebuilding of postwar Europe, the Hungarian Revolution, fighting in Lebanon, Cuba and other hot spots, the Korean War and the beginnings of the Vietnam War. She was killed by a Viet Cong land mine in 1965.Garofolo's book reproduces over 130 of Chapelle's photographs. Those pix have an immediacy, a humanity, a you-are-there quality that brought her vivid, powerful images to life. Sadly, one of the last photographs in the book shows Chapelle lying dead on the ground, being given the last rites by a USN chaplain.Dickey Chapelle not only snapped memorable images but, just as importantly, fought for equal treatment for women reporters. DICKEY CHAPELLE UNDER FIRE is a long-overdue and well-deserved tribute to this pioneering war correspondent. Highly recommended.

Great Female War Correspondent By JCGirl Of the 236 years that the United States of America has been a country, we have been in some conflict of war for 214 years of them. Through the decades, many war correspondence (mostly men) have brought us into the heat of battle with riveting stories from the frontline. One such journalist captured those images on her camera. The book Dickey Chapelle Under Fire: Photographs by the First Female War Correspondent Killed in Action by John Garofolo is a 162-page tribute to Dickey through snapshots taken during World War II in the Pacific up to the Vietnam War. As the pages turned showing black and white photos taken by Dickey, author Garofolo also brings you insight into her fascinating life. This book is a devotion to the people that she photographed, now coming out 50 years after her death in Vietnam, where a landmine killed her. A true adventurer her images will now live on forever showing the actual story of war. After reading this book, I became more interested in who Dickey was, so I highly recommend a biography on her by Roberta Ostroff entitled in the Wind: The Life of Dickey Chapelle.
