A very different Susan Warner book By Maggie Jarpey As another reviewer said, this is all about Saxon history, so it will not appeal to some people, despite the interesting reactions of the modern-for-her-time listeners to the Saxon stories. It was very special to me, yet I didn't think I would find it so. When I started, I was disappointed in getting a history lesson instead of an entertaining story mixed with history. Perhaps because I happened to be preparing an index for a textbook on western civilization, and therefore was encountering many of the historical names there in Pine Needles (but in Pine Needles from a Christian perspective), I maintained my interest. As the book went along, my interest grew stronger, and now I count this one of my favorite Warner books, but, in addition to that, it occupies a special category all its own in my personal list of favorite books overall. The Saxons were a fascinating people, and the way they responded to the gospel was good to read about. The various Saxon stories stayed with me after finishing the book, a rich and pleasant gift.

Mcdevitt This book begins with a lovely picnic in the woods, and then dives directly into Saxon history, with a missionary emphasis. I haven't read any further, not being interested in Saxon history, but this would be a good book for someone who was.

She pleads with him to keep her store open & Hero tests her for what lengths he'll take for it. She returns his kisses but stops before it goes any further b/c she's unsure about his intentions. He thinks she's using her wiles on him for her job's sake & is likely two-timing him with her co-employee just like his ex-GF did. How will these 2 handle their dual r/s & trust each other?This Peake book had good sexual tension, emotional involvement, & pacing. The romance & characters were erratic. Hero & heroin often switched back & forth from acting professional to personal with each other. Even their names for each other kept on switching! It got a bit annoying & predictable after awhile. The switch hinged on whether they got what they wanted from each other. For example, heroine acted & talked formally with Hero until He saved her store. She became formal again with him when she lost her store until the time He found her another job. Hero acted aloof & cold with heroine until she succumbed to his kisses. When she puts a stop to their intimacy, he changes from being open & romantic back to aloof & cold. It read like an emotional roller-coaster & showed how conditional their love was for each other.Limitedly recommended.

By Paul Tognetti “The potent mixture of hopes, dreams, naked greed, vast sums of easy cash, and plenty of bootleg whiskey created an intoxicating, anything-goes atmosphere.” -- page 100They called it “The Roaring 20s”. Following the horrors of World War I, the American people were bound and determined to live the good life spurred on by a robust economy, unprecedented technological progress, and rapidly changing lifestyles. The automobile now made it possible for the wealthy and people of modest means to travel to places they never thought possible. Many Americans concluded that Florida was the place to be to prosper and to live the lifestyle that they had always dreamed of. In the first half of the decade more than 300,000 people would arrive in the state flush with cash and bound and determined to make their fortunes. Some were large industrialists with grandiose plans to build exciting new communities and projects while others were land speculators who bought and sold lots at a dizzying pace in the hope of amassing quick profits. Author Willie Drye chronicles Florida in the 1920’s in his new book “For Sale—American Paradise: How Our Nation Was Sold an Impossible Dream in Florida”. You will discover how and why so many gullible Americans bought into the mythology. It is a fascinating tale.In order to understand what was happening in the Sunshine State during this period it is essential to know the major players that were busy promoting Florida as a veritable paradise on earth. Many of them including Carl Fisher (Miami Beach), Barron Collier (Naples) and George Merrick (Coral Gables) had sunk large portions of their fortunes into these emerging communities. Then there were the cheerleaders led by the three-time Democratic presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan and journalist Arthur Brisbane of the New York Journal. Both were instrumental in cranking up the hysteria that would lead to the land boom of the mid 1920s. Drye does a nice job of getting his readers up-to-speed on all of these characters. Meanwhile, Prohibition was the law of the land but large numbers of the citizenry simply chose to ignore it. As a result, outlaws like the notorious Ashley Gang, who dealt in moonshine, rum running, bank robbery and various other illegal endeavors also stood to make a killing. They would be a thorn in the side of both law enforcement and law-abiding citizens for several years.But the good times would prove to be very short-lived. Beginning in July 1926 a series of powerful hurricanes would make landfall along the Florida coast. Most people caught up in the land boom had no idea of the damage and destruction that a hurricane could cause. They had been living in a dream world. The results of these storms were devastating. According to Willie Drye “Much of the deadly debris—perhaps most of it—came from the shoddily built houses that had been slapped up by boomers obsessed with cashing in on the burgeoning rental market. Building inspectors had looked the other way while houses were thrown together, and the fortune seekers pouring into Miami had been more than willing to rent them for exorbitant prices.” Fortunes were wiped out overnight. There was certainly plenty of blame to go around. The problems were exacerbated by the failure of respected publications (The Wall Street Journal among others), various business interests, and prominent media members to accurately report the extent of the damage to a largely unsuspecting public. Instead they chose to perpetuate the myth. The final straw came in September 1928 when two more powerful storms came ashore that breeched the dikes at the southern end of Lake Okeechobee with cataclysmic consequences. It would take Florida at least two decades to recover.If I had a bit more latitude in rating “For Sale—American Paradise” I would assign it three and a half stars. After considerable thought I have decided to round it upward to four stars primarily because this is an important facet of our history that Americans need to know about. Frankly, I did not find Willie Drye to be a particularly gifted storyteller. The events depicted here are presented in a very matter-of fact manner and the author often utilized short, choppy paragraphs that I sometimes found annoying. However, since I have read other books about related subjects, most notably Lee Standiford’s marvelous “Last Train to Paradise: Henry Flagler and the Spectacular Rise and Fall of the Railroad that Crossed an Ocean” and Eliot Kleinberg’s “Black Cloud: The Great Florida Hurricane of 1928” I was happy with the fact that this book managed to fill in a number of gaps in my understanding of precisely what was going down in Florida during this tumultuous period. For those who know little or nothing of these events “For Sale—American Paradise: How Our Nation Was Sold an Impossible Dream in Florida” would definitely merit a look. Recommended.

By Wayne Neely I starting reading this book and it made me feel as if I was living in an era of days gone by. Just like his previous books Willie takes the reader on a ride down memory lane. I really and truly loved this book and I will gladly endorse this book and I promise you that if you read this book 1) You won't regret it 2) You won't be able to put this amazing book down (I missed an episode of NCIS to read it) 3) You will get a vivid and historical view point of Florida in days gone by and learn how Florida became to be known as the 'Sunshine State'.

Fascinating Characters and Stories of 1920's Florida By Amazon Customer Willie Drye's remarkable gift for story-telling shines through in this captivating new book. The Jazz Age characters come to life, as do their dreams, their schemes, their visions and their shortcomings. Florida and the 1920's are themselves central characters, but so is human ambition, greed, and creativity, which are timeless. This book is by no means just for Floridians, but I do think that it would make a great gift for anyone with an interest in or connections to Florida. So, read it yourself, no matter where you are from, and get some copies for your friends and relatives who have visited or plan to visit Florida. You are sure to enjoy the book and your friends will thank you.The book is also an impressive feat of research. The exhaustive end notes are a sort of road map of the author's tireless pursuit of facts and details. The notes are also a lot of fun to read, giving texture and background to the narrative.I highly recommend For Sale American Paradise. It is a very enjoyable ( and educational) book as well as a top-notch contribution to the field of historical journalism.

21 of 27 people found the following review helpful. Good read By M.N, I'm not a black man, I'm an Asian female, and I am regular reader of Clarey's blog and his youtube videos. He reminds me of that older brother kind of figure that gave you no bulls*** wisdom, that you often times refused to listen to because it might have hurt your feelings a little bit. But of course you thanked him later. This book is geared towards men, and not all of it is relevant to me but I honestly I think this book is a entertaining book that gives great advice and insight that pretty much both sexes and all races can use to improve their lives in a practical, tangible way. I especially enjoyed reading his writing on the importance of family and other people. A black person who is struggling in life may feel offended at the idea of a white man giving them advice, which I can understand, but I'd urge that kind of individual to keep an open mind and take whatever good ideas they can get from this book and use it because it actually might truly better their lives.

Aaron at his uncensored, unfilitered best By Martin Andrade This book represents the full range of Aaron's ability to see a problem, disassemble it into manageable chunks, and create evidence-based solutions. Which is nothing surprising, given his earlier works. However, this book's honest, truthful and uncensored prose represents the final evolution in Aaron's writing. No attempt is made at censorship. No diplomacy. It is the naked truth, and is sure to attract attention, and controversy.

About the Author The CastJohn Philip Johnson is a writer mostly of science fiction whose work has been published in many venues, including Rattle, Southern Poetry Review, Strange Horizons, Mythic Delirium, Daily Science Fiction, Niteblade, Apex Magazine, Ted Kooser's newspaper column, "American Life in Poetry, " and at the Poetry Foundation.  Bob Hall is a legend, the co-creator of West Coast Avengers, and an artist for such series as Spiderman, Batman, Shadowland, and many others. He now directs Shakespeare plays and is currently working on his Masters of Fine Arts degree, which just shows how phenomenal this man is. Julian Peters' illustrated "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" went viral as comics poetry. He was the inspiration for this project. Julian has been featured in such venues as Slate, University Bookman, The Boston Globe, and probably more than anyone else, is responsible for the current expansion of this art form.  Nate Hamel has worked for many comics and games publishers, spoken at many Comic Cons, and has delighted his large and growing fandom by delivering a full-contact style of art. His goal with his art is to create an "immersive" setting for the viewer, drawing his reader deep into the story.  Mike Lawlor is an architect and a fine artist, and earlier in his life he had a subversive comic strip called Leisureman, which satirized American life through the eyes of an unemployed philosopher traveling the world in his brown bathrobe. Michael Lawlor's treatment of "After the Changeling Incantation" is probably my favorite, though each graphic segment displays strong style and vision.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Love! By Nicola Mansfield This cute cover attracted me and I'm so glad I read Katamari. There are some introductory pages explaining that this originally appeared as a webcomic back in the day based on a video game series mostly for the Playstation systems. I'd never heard of the game before let alone played it however this book version of the comic strip has running commentary by both the author and illustrator which clues the reader into so much information about the games, the comic and the making of, which makes the fun comic even more delightful to read. There are several large story arcs included in the volume and interspersed in between either one-shots or just 2-3 page arcs. All the arcs are independent stories but they do build upon each other so while the book has no overreaching plot it does have a cohesiveness that pulls it together well. I love the characters; they are adorable and the art is cartoony excellence. The stories range from saving the world from doom to pointless comedy one-shots providing a wide range of topics that keeps the stories fresh and never dull. I'm quite impressed as the book ended up being much more than my initial impressions, keeping a running theme of the value of friendship throughout. Appropriate for all ages.

Good value for money By Dr See the Amazon description for the updated features to this edition.This the updated version of the Stuart's popular " Field Guide to Mammals of Southern Africa."In now includes Angola, Zambia and Malawi.The book is significantly larger-- I by just over 150 pages.I have both the older Kindle edition and this newer oneThe animal descriptions are excellentBasic detailsIt starts with a brief summary in a green shaded box.It gives the animal's common name and zoolological name.Next length,height at shoulder,weight of male/female. If the animal has horns, details are given.. ( photos often show the horns, and there may be a shot of a young male ( no horns) and a mature male.)Main pointers to identification are carefully summarised. ( later on the animal's footprint is given and their height off the ground compared to a shadow adult man )There is a distribution map of the animals current range, a number of maps note the historic range in a different colour.HornsThese are usually shown in the photos.However some entries also get line diagrams of horns at various ages. Examples includeBlack Wildebeest horns at 6, 12,24, 36 and 48 months.The Greater Kudu, whose horns have a beautiful spiral are possibly the most beautiful. In the mature bull there is a "double "spiral These changes are shown from 9 months to that of a mature Bull in its prime in some 6 stages that take well over30 months plusHorn structure that change with time are shown for some other antelope. I found these diagrams interesting.PhotosThe photos are excellent.Where a number of books have one , there are often several.Where there is a difference between male and female this is often shown.Shots of mother's with young are fairly frequent.. Some antelope hide their young for a period after their birth. In the section on Puku , there is a good photo of a Puku lamb curled up hidden in longish grass.Important points of identification are captured in the shots, in some cases to make sure you got the point, a clear detail shot or inset is included-- the black stripe on the Impala's buttock area., or the black blaze on the face of the Black faced Impala.-- I could pick more difficult examples , but this is just to make a point about their attention to detail and keenness for you to grasp the details better. ( I am currently struggling to get clear in my mind various antelope,bucks and bocks etc and I have found both their descriptions and pictures very helpful.)The photos are of a good size. They upscale well on the IPadDescriptionsThe descriptions give details on animal identification,distribution, habitat, behaviour, food, social features, reproduction, longevity etc.These descriptions are fairly full and certainly informative.Summary.There is a very useful A--Z common animal name linked access at the front of the book.If you want Zebra, push Zebra.If you want Hyraxes push Hyraxes and so on.The Stuart's have continued to improve their excellent guide.It now includes Angola, Zambia and Malawi. New species from these areas are included in the book.-- sorry I am still tracking them down.What makes the book for me-- the plentiful and excellent photos often showing male / female shots and some female shots may have the female with their offspring. Helpful shot of points of identification are often included.Almost as good is their text which covers many matters you want to know about as you get to know the animals better.All in all , this is an excellent book .It works well on my IPad Kindle Reader.It is excellent value for money

It is so well written and certain aspects of her life had me laughing out loud. It is truly an enjoyable book AND it is clean . No bad language, and a book that even young people could read. Ms. Mofid has a wonderful narrative that pulls you in close with wit, humor, and a deep understanding of life's curveballs! She brings you into her world, her love of horses and her growth and adventures with them.If you are a "Horse Person" like me you will resonate and love her many experiences that are "simpatico" with horseback riders. For non "Horse People" you will learn of the deep, soul moving and often magical motivators that drive the Lovers of all things Equine. This book is very funny, smart and speaks of learning to coming to terms with the bumps and detours in life with grace, ease, and a wonderful sense of humor. All together it's a great read!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Every Surprise Was A Good One By Pop Bop I wasn't sure what to expect going in to this book. "Judge Dredd" always reminds me of the Sylvester Stallone vehicle, and that's not a good thing. (His Judge Dredd movie was practically in negative numbers at "Rotten Tomatoes".) Well anyway, guess what? The Judge Dredd comic world is a very sophisticated and accomplished one, and its Judge Cassandra Anderson spin-off, (of which this book is the latest example), is particularly well crafted. Apparently, Sly did not kill off this franchise. And now I see why it has its fans.Here's the set up. Judge Cassandra Anderson, (a "judge" is basically a cop with on the spot, in the field, judicial authority), is a member of the PSI Division of the Justice Department of Mega-City One. We are in an anarchic post-Apocalyptic world; the U.S. is gone except for a few cities separated by vast emptinesses. Cassandra is aptly named because like her mythical namesake she has psychic powers, is telepathic, is a pre-cog, and is able to sense approaching danger. An orphan, she was taken in by the Justice Department because of these abilities and was practically raised by the organization.Anderson was introduced to the Judge Dredd world as a sort of thinking man's foil to the black-and-white Judge Dredd and there are a bunch of earlier books in which she is basically just Dredd's sidekick. Anderson was then spun off to be a featured character and this book is her latest appearance as a major and central character in the Judge Dredd universe. This book was written by Matt Smith, who seems to now be the primary writer guiding the development of this character, and was drawn by Carl Critchlow, also an Anderson veteran. So the story is in good hands.So, after all of that, is the book any good? Yes. Here's the author's description of the story - "It starts with Cass getting a psi-flash of a heist at the opening of an exhibition of Cursed Earth antiquities at the Megapolitan Museum of Modern History. Investigating, she discovers perps attempting to steal a map while a mutant has psychically blacked out the whole area, rendering everyone unconscious. In a bid to find out what the criminals needed the map for, she goes on their trail." Cassandra travels to the Alabama Morass, (basically a mega-Okefenokee), partners with a local cop with psycho-geographic powers, (basically, she tracks and guides through psychic links with the environment itself), and it's all swamp, mutants, bad guys, action and heart-of-darkness atmosphere from there. Original and engaging. And once we leave the swamp we're on the trail of a mysterious master criminal, so it's all good.I particularly like the fact that Cassandra is not burdened with a lot of phoney baloney angst. She and her new partner work well together without any unnecessary drama. There is a fair amount of monologuing and exposition, which brings new readers up to speed but doesn't drag on or weigh down the story. Judge Anderson is tough, competent, resourceful, and not tarted up with any phony baggage. She's a straight up heroine.This is all enhanced by good quality drawing. Characters are recognizable and expressive, action is clear, coloring is good, and the panels are consistent from page to page. Mutants, creatures and the like are well conceived and executed.So, an overall nice piece of work, both graphically and in terms of story and character. A happy find. It's good to learn more about Judge Anderson, but something was missing in this Mega-City One story By Wayne A McCoy 'Judge Dredd: Anderson, Psi-Division' is a story featuring Judge Anderson. While Judge Dredd makes a cameo, just realize he's not in this one much more than a few panels.Cassandra Anderson has a gift of precognition, and when she sees that a robbery is going to take place at one of Mega-City One's museums, she's not above inconveniencing museum staff to save lives. When the robbers reveal a dangerous new weapon that Anderson is immune to, she knows it's up to her to stop it. This leads her on a hunt for a criminal overlord that may exist or may just be a ghost story that criminals tell each other (Keyser Soze anyone?). Her adventures lead her to desolate swamps and see her teaming up with some strange people, like a fellow judge from Texas who can track using something called psychic geography. Will her gut instincts and cognition prove correct, or will they lead her into a trap? And what does it have to do with her birth, if anything?I like Judge Anderson, and I feel like the book has all the design elements of the world of Judge Dredd, but I felt something was lacking. Perhaps it was lacking Dredd's stony sobriety, or the weird humor that seems to show up in the boundaries of the stories. Still, it was interesting to learn more about Anderson, and it's not a terrible story. There are some nice twists and turns before it's all said and done.I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, IDW Publishing, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. When she gets a psychic flash of a burglary at the Modern Museum she investigates and finds that a map has been stolen. Using her skills she gleans information from one of the perps that leads her to investigate the whereabouts of a master criminal.This was a pretty good read; the story itself was fairly engaging but picked up considerably after the halfway mark. Character wise, Anderson is one tough chicky and it’s always great to see a strong female lead. Judge Dredd makes an appearance but involvement didn’t really carry that much weight and without him the read wouldn’t have suffered. This is a positive for how well drawn the character of Anderson is.The art was good but perhaps not quite to my personal taste, it was well drawn and characters were expressive without it being overdone. A good read that dragged storywise at the beginning but ended strongly.Recommended.
