The Smithsonian Institution’s Dibner Library of the History of Science and Technology is located in the bowels of the National Museum of American History. Cliff was one of the fortunate who, having received a Dibner Library Resident Scholar award, spent many an hour on the other side of those secreted doors. It was an experience rather like that of C. S. Lewis’s Lucy, who climbed into the wardrobe and discovered a magical land. He met no White Witch, but the experience produced this book—the result of a wonderful adventurous journey.Builders of the Hoosac Tunnel traces the interactions between those who worked to bore the five-mile Hoosac railroad tunnel and those who hindered its construction. From the railroad stockholders, to the Canadian brothers who achieved daylight through the mountain, the story follows the evolution of American Civil Engineering.

Review “Schexnayder digs deep to provide an amazing level of detail and perspective in his account of one of our nation’s early civil engineering feats.” (Tudor Van Hampton, Engineering News-Record)“With Cliff Schexnayders' momentous work, for the first time the Hoosac Tunnel saga is examined within the context of its contemporary American history.” (Carl R. Byron, author, A Pinprick of Light)“Builders of the Hoosac Tunnel is a fascinating book describing the politics, society, financing, and construction practiecs as well as civil engineering education during the late 18th and 19th centuries. The tale begins with a chilling description of the worst accident which occurred at the mountain on October 19, 1867 killing thirteen workers.” (Jerry R. Rogers, Ph.D., P.E. WRE, Distinguished M. ASCE)

Brierley Having been born and raised in North Adams, MA and having spent my entire professional career designing and constructing tunnels, I was more than a little interested in what Cliff Schexnayder had to say about the Hoosac Tunnel. As anyone in the tunneling business knows, the Hoosac Tunnel is one of the most significant and important tunnel projects ever constructed in the world. Because of the Hoosac Tunnel, the United States assumed a leadership role in helping to design and construct rock tunnels utilizing compressed air rock drills and dynamite for almost 100 years.Having read Dr. Schexnayder’s book I was genuinely impressed with his in-depth analysis of the political, legal, contractual, and technical issues associated with this project. His book provides an unprecedented level of detail about the history of civil engineering in the mid 1800’s and about the enormous level of human endurance and perseverance that was required to bring this project to fruition. For anyone interested in tunneling, this book is a must read. In addition, anyone from Massachusetts and/or anyone who is interested in the history of truly historic civil engineering projects should read this book. Hopefully, Dr. Schexanyder’s book will provide the Hoosac Tunnel with the degree of civil engineering prominence that is deserves. The Hoosac Tunnel ranks favorably with other significant construction projects of the era such as the Brooklyn Bridge, the Transcontinental Railroad, the Erie Canal, and the Boston and New York subway projects.Dr. Gary Brierley is well known in the Tunneling industry and is currently President of Doctor Mole Incorporated.

I expected to find out about the tunnel’s physical aspects and technical challenges, and while the book certainly does not disappoint on these aspects -- it is much more. It is informative and entertaining on many levels, including the tragedies and perseverance of real people with real lives and real challenges, and how they dealt with so many challenges. So often we take for granted a completed work (be it engineering, or a writing, or history) and knowing the outcome we subconsciously assume it was destined to be so. This book dispels any notion about it being easy to construct the longest tunnel of the time, and how our predecessors persevered through seeming defeat.Builders of the Hoosac Tunnel addresses many other aspects of national events that run their course during the period before construction actually began in the 1850s, such as economic development of the U.S., the history of developing trade from the earliest days of the Republic, bare knuckle contacting issues, and the emergence of technologies needed to made tunneling of the Hoosac Mountain possible. Hence it is recommended for those looking for human interest stories, American history starting from before the French and English arrived, and the development of engineering in the US to include railroading, tunneling and explosives.Clearly this work is the result of an enormous research effort from sources that are difficult to access, and the reader is the beneficiary. To assist the reader in following the various story lines, the book contains numerous maps, sketches, progressing chronological timelines and a few photographs. I found these to be very useful tools.Construction is not just technological. Just as important are the people and sometimes contemporary events. Schexnayder has done an excellent job of bring the reader along on all of these planes at the same time – as though you were there, living history.

Allan This book presents not only a concise and detailed treatise on the construction of the Hoosac, but the author also makes it an engaging and interesting read. Schexnayder presents a well-researched volume outlining one of the great engineering achievements of our young Country, and the trials of the men who gave virtually everything to see the bore to its completion. Many of the processes that were perfected during the tunneling are also explained, adding a technical dimension to the storytelling, but still engaging nonetheless. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the engineering of the era, our manifest destiny, the American work ethic, and the indomitable human spirit.
