2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Anime vs. Manga By paulina As with the previous volumes of manga created post-tv series, I find the manga to be disappointing. The tone is almost one of parody as the characters are exaggerated in affect and action. The subtle nuances of the television series are disposed of in favor of action and fan service. I imagine this was done to sell the manga to a younger,male crowd who may have found the romantic triangle of Saya, Haji and Solomon too mushy for their tastes. If you are a romantic, you will not enjoy the manga although as a Blood Plus fan, you will appreciate the greater detail to backstory and even some of the differences. For example, (spoiler alert), George Miuyagusuku doesn't die in the manga. He sometimes acts like a fool, though. I didn't like that much. The character of Charles aka Karl is also more developed so if you like that character, the manga will please. All in all, manga is manga and anime is anime. They don't always reflect well on each other. I prefer the animated version, as well as the complex story that is slowly developed over time. The less patient and less romantic will probably disagree. And that's what makes a horse race.

So not only are we graced with blatant misogyny and piss-poor story telling and awful characterization, but surprise, surprise! Sexual objectification of not only our heroine Saya, but also Julia and the 14 year old UNDERAGED disabled girl Mui. Again, watch the anime or read the Light Novels. Still 46756256346387x better than this waste of paper.

The stakes are higher now as her foster brother, Riku, has been kidnapped and she's determined to find him and get him back to safety. Saya ends up working along with the Red Shield, an organization whose been trying to stop the Chiropterans as well.This manga has Saya traveling to Vietnam, which is good because the change in scenery drives home how this epidemic is expanding. Saya has a lot more on her plate then you're led to believe in the first volume. The action and violence are still there. There isn't as much Kai as in the first novel, but he isn't really a favorite of mine anyway so I didn't miss him. Nothing is taboo in this series as children are subjected to just as much violence and tragedy.I'm a big Haji fan, so I enjoy seeing him be Saya's rock. They have an underlying bond with each other that builds throughout the series. Unlike volume 1, this volume somewhat combines several episodes from the anime though, again, there are obvious plot differences.This volume could be a standalone, but since this series is only 5 volumes, it's worth reading consecutively.

Limited in scope By AmazonJavaJunki Written in an academic style but lacking the rigor of most academic works, this book falls somewhere between a general interest book for the public and a scholarly work. It does contain an index and extensive reference section so could be suitable for use in a college class but frankly, the overall impact falls short. It's not without merit, it just doesn't seem to substantiate the assertions made...or take the basic premise far enough. While it is true that the white majority is rapidly becoming a minority, what is much less evident is how that impacts society at large. If we are to presume that white privilege alone is the only measure then it is a limited scope to be sure. On the other hand, if we are to assume that a migration from "white" Latino's and other current "minorities" will result in a similar shift from "Jewish, Italian, Irish etc to "white" then a vastly different picture emerges. The now infamous "oreo cookie" reference is yet another example of the problem with trying to neatly package and define whiteness in this nation. Overall this is a topic in need of discussion but as a foreign born and raised "non -white" married to an extremely "white" spouse, even our own relationship has been redefined via government agencies over the years...initially we were considered an "inter-racial marriage' via the Census - against our own wishes...and then later redefined...and redefined again. Clearly this is a topic in need of clarity and discussion so I was glad to see this work begin to initiate that discussion but the overall impact was limited and conservative.

Provocative and challenging - not light reading, but many vital observations By Nathan Webster This is a provocative and challenging analysis, and it demands a fair amount of effort from the reader. If you're familiar with the Polity press, you know they publish very detailed academic research, and this is no different.If I had a wish - and this was not promised by the book, so it's no complaint - it's that it would be more accessible to general audiences. It raises strong ideas but I do think a reader needs to come with an open mind and a background in history. If you come to this book unprepared to hear that "white supremacy" is a true thing, you might be too defensive to get anything from it. The reality about "white culture" isn't that it's automatically better/worse - but it IS/WAS the supreme culture in the country, and that is now changing, and of course that culture doesn't like that.But right now we're still in the middle of this change - so one 'side' is grasping to a fading past, and the other is rising to a more equal place. It's revolutionary, even if it doesn't seem that way.It's tough to point to any one thing from this book to try to sum it up. This is well-presented academic research and I think an audience interested in objectively examining changes in our society will appreciate it - but this is not light reading. You need to be familiar with the expectations and demands of reading this sort of academic research to get the most from it - I'm not sure I was!

An Absolute Must Read By Hrafnkell Haraldsson I don’t like to overuse the term “must read” but Linda Martin Alcoff’s The Future of Whiteness is a must-read. We live in the era of white reaction to non-whites getting equal rights, and changing demographics – by 2050 white Europeans will no longer be a majority - have created a frenzy of over-reaction on the right, and some problems on the left too, as Bernie Sanders found out when Black Lives Matter upstaged him and demanded to be heard.When we see white supremacists courted by a major political party, and groups touting “white slavery” and “white genocide,” it’s time white people take a look at what is going on, and think, perhaps for the first time, about what being white means, what it has meant in the past, and what it will mean in the future.As Alcoff writes, “This is a book about a topic many would rather avoid.” It is not an easy subject, racism, particularly when we are assured by the same political party courting white supremacists that we live in a post-racist world (there is a left-wing version of post-racialism too, she argues). There is a lot of white-splaining going on over at Fox News – by white men. I’m a white man, and this offends me.How does a white male of all demographic groups get to tell non-whites how they should feel?Alcoff points to the election of Barack Obama and to “a white reaction that can take some pretty hysterical forms.” She says that “holding a significant majority within a nation has granted whites the ability to believe in the legitimacy of a white-dominated government.” I would argue that it goes further than this, to a white “Christian” government, but Alcoff is not interested in the religious question, and you won’t even find it in the index of her book.The subject at hand, I have to admit, is potent enough, and that would make for another book altogether. So we have a “Sturm und Drang” as she says, on the right, but we also have a white-dominated left. And white liberals, she says, “remain uncomfortable in broaching the topic, while white conservatives generally try to disguise their racial references, though the disguise is often so ineffective as to be a joke.”This is an uncomfortable topic for liberals and progressives as well, much as we might want to deny it. I know the suggestion made me uncomfortable in reading it, but it forced me to re-examine my own reactions. Alcoff says that “the extreme unabashed right wing dominates race-talk, while all others, including the left, the liberals, and the moderates, largely maintain race avoidance.”And that was what Bernie Sanders, for example, was accused of – ignoring systemic racism. He had been invited to speak about Social Security and Medicare. His response was a “racial justice platform” that then won praise from the BLM movement. Alcoff doesn’t address Sanders or Black Lives Matter specifically but they seem excellent examples of the forces she is addressing.And Alcoff says we need to talk about this, and she calls the left’s tendency to separate class from race unhelpful in this regard. I thought about this, and I do think it is true that we tend to do that. She points out that “If race is basically an illusion – or a mere ideological overlay that mystifies reality, as it is on this mainstream left view – then the demographic changes make no real difference, only a difference at the level of ideology.”From the point of view of a liberal, this means that at the very best, even if we are not part of the problem, we are also not part of the solution.Alcoff moves on to a discussion of whiteness, what it is, what it means, and its history, and history shows that whiteness as “moveable” boundaries, as she puts it; Irish and Italians have both had to earn their white status, and she points out that even today southern Europeans and Jews are only “borderline” whites.It’s a bet of a mess isn’t it, this “white” thing? In fact, whiteness is a “historical and social construct” rather than a “singular idea” and it has changed and continues to change. She talks about labels and the changing nature of social identities (given society itself is changing). She employs categories from around the world, including Yugoslavia after its break up, the Mason-Dixon line, and Rwanda, and offers us a brief history of “race” and a discussion of “class.”This is no easy read and it should not be, given the complexity and importance of the subject. It is important we understand these things so that we can intelligently discuss them. These are concepts it is often difficult for us to wrap our thoughts around, even assuming we can come to some agreement on terms.Alcoff’s chapter on white exceptionalism is particularly important today, and here she employs William Faulkner to illustrate our contradictory attitudes towards race and white supremacy. Being a philosopher, it is hardly surprising that we should also meet here Newton and Goethe and discussions of universalism versus purity.This is a book that will make you think, and it would have very little value if it simply validated existing attitudes. Because whiteness is not an unchallenged default, this is a subject that should receive our undivided attention. I cannot recommend this book enough. It will challenge your thinking, and I can think of no higher praise.

All thoughts are my own.This book left me feeling like my head was spinning. I cannot think of another book I've read which has left me with so many emotions. I have such a strong pull towards Germany, being part German. My great uncle fought in WWII and his wife is a Holocaust survivor. Perhaps for these reasons, the issues of the Holocaust have touched me on a personal level. I've been disgusted to know neo-Nazis are on the rise in the Germany but I didn't realize how much of an issue it truly is until I read Germany, at Odds. It's rather disturbing learning how much hatred is still within the country but also how much denial exists, how they've turned themselves into the victims. Additionally, I honestly hadn't thought about much about the situation with the Berlin Wall coming down and how it would effect the people. When you think about it, it really hasn't been very much time at all in the scheme of things and so of course Communism still holds strong with some of the people there. Things are things, which, being American I hadn't given much thought.I found it quite interesting reading about the true nature of the German people. In part because I do live in an area with strong German heritage, and so I could definitely see some of the characteristics of the people here reflected in the author's descriptions. Some things as well I could see in myself to some extent. Additionally, I have found the rudeness of the German people to be quite true in my limited experiences with dealing with them. Given that my maiden name is German - possibly Jewish - I have wondered if it was a reason for their attitude towards me. Now I have to hold this may be quite true in some circumstances, which is ridiculous since I'm not Jewish.This week I discovered my ancestors were Huguenots. The entire family was killed, save my ancestor, for their beliefs. Reading in this book about the Huguenots coming to Berlin was somehow eerie. It was very difficult reading all of the Holocaust stories with this new information about my family in mind. I have only a glimmer of understanding how it had to have shaped the lives of the survivors, of the entire country.I found many of the politics disturbing, because it really is difficult to tell the difference between the left and right at times. It's equally difficult trying to distinguish between right and wrong sometimes. I found both sides make valid points on some things, but it's the extremist view which is the issue. It's difficult to find the line in which too much is too much. Being American, I value the importance of people having their freedom to live as they choose as long as they're not hurting others. Even though some of those opinions are different than ours, their freedom should still be valued. I don't envy Germany trying to sort through some of these things.As I said, I live in a area with strong German ties. Until I moved here, I did not experience how music could so impact their beliefs. I can attest to what the author has expressed about reaching the youth through music as a means for recruiting new Skinheads and neo-Nazis. I've seen it first hand here in America.Anyway, back to the book. I found the book itself to be a bit dizzying as the author jumps around through time with each chapter. Perhaps there is a pattern to it I'm not seeing, but I found it a bit confusing as it did not seem to flow well. However, it was quite interesting to read and has opened my eyes to some of the modern day issues in Germany.

By Heidi Anne We all think of Germany as a country that has made a complete turn around from it's troublesome past in the 1930's and 1940's. But is that really true? This book explores the attitudes that exist within the country toward its minority Jewish population. The country certainly isn't implementing the policies that led tragedy anymore, but have they dealt with how the attitudes that allowed those events to occur?The author has a unique perspective. He is an Israeli that has spent years in Germany as a reporter. You may not like everything he has to say, but he does challenge the attitudes that exist in Germany. The book is well written, and if you are interested in foreign affairs you will probably enjoy reading this book. Many books written about Germany only explore the events of the past. This book explores how that history is a part of how the nation interacts with the nation of Israel.He shows how many Germans just want to forget about what during the Holocaust. And the attitude that most individuals didn't know what was going on still exists. He leaves you with the question could something as horrific ever happen again?I was asked to complete a review of this book, but the opinions are all mine.

Germany at Odds by Eldad Beck is a real eye opener on some of the myths you may have heard about Germany and takes you on a journey through Eldad Beck's personal and professional experiences while he was reporting from Germany for an Israeli newspaper as a journalist.I'm usually not one to read biographies. Although they can be insightful and interesting, they are usually the last thing I reach for when looking for a new read. But to my surprise I very much enjoyed reading Germany at Odds! I found Beck's story to be intriguing and eye opening! He's experiences showed me a side of Germany I did not know!If you enjoy biographies or would like to have some more insight on Germany then this is the read for you!

No pesky artist's bio here. No historical context on why these paintings are important. Not zoomable. Not the artist's best work nor most child friendly. Just a random selection. All the titles in this series are similarly lackluster.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Washington, the self-improvement man By Robert Fisher I had just placed an order with Amazon and among other reading suggestions was this book. West Point professor Adrienne Harrison has chosen to focus on the reading habits of George Washington and as I had read a similar work about Abraham Lincoln, I thought this was something worth buying so I placed a second order. Harrison does make a number of interesting points. Unlike John Adams or Thomas Jefferson, Washington did not enjoy much in the way of formal education. She does a fine compare and contrast between Washington and that other self-made founding father Benjamin Franklin. She argues that Washington "is the quintessential American success story. He eschewed the fashionable classical education that was the foundation of a European style of mind in favor of a more practical approach to learning that included only those subjects that had an immediate application." As a young man trying to rise in Virginia society, he studied etiquette and learned surveying, two needed skills to attract powerful patrons. He received an officer's commission, and in both the Seven Years War and the Revolution, he read to develop his military knowledge. As a landowner and a member of Virginia's legislature, he had to teach himself agriculture. As a church vestryman, he needed to learn about religious law. In the early years of the nation, he came to appreciate the power of the press, but he also collected recently printed sermons as a supplement to newspapers in gauging public opinion, an idea I had found intriguing (the thought occurred to me that Washington would have been both fascinated by and horrified with the Internet). Harrison notes how much of Mount Vernon was designed to impress, but Washington's study was an austere, very private area and even family members needed permission to enter. She also writes of how Washington was concerned about his future reputation and planned a building to house his papers; had he lived longer, it would have been the first presidential library. Harrison has written a very good history of a man determined to surmount his limited education and how he not only succeeded, but did so in a number of fields.

This the author does in a wonderful work I've found to be one of the best in my large collection of books on George Washington. Brings to life the penetrating mind of our preeminent Founding Father. Well researched and well written, with plenty of "Wow, I didn't know thats!" Highly recommended for interesting insights into our "ultimate American" you'll not find elsewhere!

By philip smucker I caught Dr. Harrison's wonderful Ford Foundation book talk at the Mount Vernon Estate & Gardens. Her grasp of her material was impressive, and her descriptions of George's own reading quandaries were lively and entertaining. I bought this book months ago online and recommend it highly. There are many ways to get to know our somewhat aloof First President, and his private reading and letter writing is one of the best, as Harrison makes clear. Since George wasn't a regular margin scribbler, it is hard to know how much time he spent immersed in each individual book, but it is fair to say -- as Harrison does -- that he read voraciously to improve both is his manners and his mind.

Breaking the cycle By Val If you’ve ever been involved with someone who has been lying so long that they no longer know the difference between the truth and what they are saying you need to read this. The experience of being in such a relationship not only can disrupt your perceptions of reality, it should also make you inventory your own ability to speak the truth to yourself and others. This book does not demand that you place ugly truths before people who aren’t interested. But it does help you identify where you are, what you are doing and how to change it. The reason this is perfect for people who’ve been in a relationship with a habitual liar is that the longer you condone, support and enable that behavior in another the more you will demonstrate that behavior. You may never be able to help the person you care about who is a habitual liar. But you can at least stop lying to yourself about what is going on and make intelligent decisions on how to proceed.

By Kristy I have a friend who is a compulsive liar so I bought this book to understand better this kind of person, why they are in need of lying. The book mentions that compulsive liars like the self-esteem boost because they desire to look good in the eyes of other people or they want to hide wrongdoings. I liked that it focused on what you can do to help yourself be a better person and also to help others with the lying problem. I recommend this book.

I like to go the “easier way”. However, I am aware that it is a nasty habit and I am willing to change it because not telling something or lying about it only gets you a temporary solution. However, on longer tracks it only can cause troubles. Found this book very useful in changing my habits. Thanks!

By InfoHound I’m sure the author loves creating stories to tell his kids, but that does not make him a writer. I have 5 of the 6 books put out by this author. All were free copies. All merit the following review!These appear to have been written by a 10 to 12 year old who has not learned the basics of writing. If they are written by a child not bad, if they are being produced by an adult, VERY POOR QUALITY.If I were 8 to 10 years old and did not know any better, these books might be okay.But for my 12 year old son, there is no way he could read down to this level. They are NOT worth paying for.Bottom line is they are badly written. Read the “Look Inside” to see just how badly done these are.There are much better quality Minecraft books available, spend your money elsewhere!

Perfect if you like SAO, this book has a very interesting concept and is executed in a humorous and fun way! There are a lot of Minecraft reference so i recommend you at least play the game once before reading! I really like the writing style and look forward to future books from Scott K.
