By Leaf On my Goodreads and purchased at Rightstuf:Requiem of the Rose King was one of my most anticipated manga of 2015, and it lived up to my expectations. Based on an early draft of Shakespear's Richard 3, this manga follows the tragic tale of a character named Richard, born into the world an intersex person. Richard is born with both the body of a male and a female, and for this reason, his mother cannot bear to look at him. It would not be an exaggeration to even say she fears and hates Richard, for she purposely abandoned him in the woods where witches are rumored to reside and accuses him of basically being demon spawn. THIS IS NOT YOUR TYPICAL SHOUJO. THIS IS DARK AND GRUESOME AND VERY DIFFERENT.The story is set in medieval England against the War of the Roses, and our characters are stuck in the middle of it. Here, we follow the House of York and Richard's father, who is trying to take back his crown from Henry Lancaster, a devout Christian. The art is beyond gorgeous, and you can actually tell that the characters are European! The women are not damsels either, especially Queen Margaret, wife of Henry Lancaster. She takes charge of the war for Henry, who is tormented by the sins his soldiers commit.Joan of Arc is twisted into a mischievous spirit, and for those who are religious like me, it would be best if you don't take offense at a lot of the liberties this manga took regarding faith. Saying that, religion is a prominent part of the manga, but it isn't shoved down your throat either so both atheists and religious folk can enjoy the story. Regardless, this was set in a time where religion was a big part of life.For a shoujo manga, this certainly isn't your typical story. We follow an intersex character who is burdened with shame, depression and self-loathing, and a heavy focus is spent on the characters and how they are faring against their situations. The art is absolutely beautiful and I found myself staring at many of the pages for a long time, completely amazed. There were times where it even seemed very Tim Burtony in its style. It's not Vagabond, but it truly stands above most manga in art. If you like witty dialog and politics, strong women and controversial topics, breathtaking art and something new, I highly suggest you give this a try.If you liked: Rose of Versailles, Pandora Hearts, dark shoujo, medieval England, gorgeous art, Tim Burton, you will probably really like this!

Interesting take on Richard III By Talvi Requiem For The Rose King does for the English Wars of the Roses what Rose of Versailles did for the French Revolution. Genders are murky, everyone is beautiful, and historical accuracy is easily jettisoned in favor of over-the-top drama. It's pure entertainment; a very Japanese 'translation' of an early Shakespeare Richard the III draft with an emphasis on 'loose'. But this is also a timely topic with the recent find of Richard IIIs burial site under a parking lot in England last year.Story: Queen Margaret of Anjou and Richard Duke of York's feud of 1455 has created the Wars of the Roses: bloodshed across the English country by divided noblemen fighting for the throne. On one side, Queen Margaret and her insane husband, King Henry the VI, whose emblem is the Lancastrian white rose. On the other side, Richard, Duke of York, whose emblem is a red rose. Richard and his wife Cecily have three children: the youngest, named after his father but born under ill omens and deformed, is the focus of our story. For this deformed child will grow up to become the infamous Richard the III, last of the medieval Kings of England. But before he grows up to be King, he will deal with his mother's disgust, his father's love, and his own warped ambition. For his deformity is being born an intersex and it has cursed him to impotence.It was an interesting plot choice to take the hunchback King (Richard III was born with a curved spine) and instead turn that deformity into being born intersex. Since this is loosely based on Shakespeare, automatically we know Richard will be evil in this adaptation. Author Kanno has chosen to make him more misunderstood than demonic; a child resenting his quirk of birth and wanting more for his father and family. At the same time, he fights his mother, the devout Christian Cecily, who considers her child demonspawn and tries to desperately keep Richard from his father.There are appearances from many historical figures; e.g., gender neutral Joan of Arc taunts young Richard as a specter of doom and Richard's rival, King Henry, pious pacifist son of Margaret of Anjou. Those curious about actual events may want to keep a wikipedia entry handy. But really, it's not needed to follow the story, which really is more about a good story than historical value. Villains, especially the women, are reminiscent of the "evil laugh behind a hand" type of 1970s shoujo evil queens. Margaret of Anjou is a lawn mower, Cecily Neville (Richard IIIs mother) is a fanatical insane, and Anne Neville (Richard's future wife) has an inexplicable attraction to Richard. As such, the interesting characters are the males and their relationships with Richard as he moves around in medieval England.The art is quite lovely and there is enough drama to keep readers entertained (and perhaps a bit curious about the actual events surrounding the Wars of the Roses and final fate of King Richard the III).Reviewed from an ARC provided by the publisher.

By X Based on early drafts of Shakespeare's Richard III & Henry VI, Aya Kanno brings forth these two stories and blends them into a dark mysterious world with her own touches. Before I go any further, you DO NOT have to be familiar with Shakespeare's works to enjoy the story. It unfolds in its own way.The setting takes place in the middle of a war between York and Lancaster where each fights is aiming to keep the throne, or rightfully assume it. The manga has dramatic political upheavals, familial disagreements, and jaw dropping plot twists that have the potential to change the fate of the story in any way. With each passing chapter (this book has 4), more climax builds with all the characters Richard, son of York, encounters, and with the events that unfold.Richard, born and soon after shunned by his mother develops a sort of lonely air to him. He seems tormented but regains his "light" and "his reason to live" as he puts it when he is with his father. When his father also named Richard, decides to take the throne from Lancaster, he leaves and we can see the kind of relationship in contrast he has with his mother. Calling him a demon spawn, and ostracizing Richard, his mother is not one who a reader can easily like. But Richard's determination to bring honor to himself is evident when he wishes to fight alongside his father and see him on the throne as rightful king.However, as one reads, a problem arises when the King of Lancaster is introduced making the reader wonder whether it will be so easy as Richard thinks.As far as the art goes, it is gorgeous. It has clean lines, nice backgrounds, and nice facial expressions that clearly show the character's emotions.The dialogue is a little airy but only with certain characters like Kings, Queens, and Dukes. It isn't too grandiose that you can't read it, but enough to tell they are people of importance or status.There is a few panels of violence when the war begins, and there is a particular scene of brief nudity when Richard's secret is let known to the readers.
