When it was decided to make a movie about them, there were understandably some doubts about investing so much money into an adaptation of a relatively unknown franchise. All doubts were swept away on the day of release, when Guardians of Galaxy opened to rave reviews of a fun, action-packed space adventure that is a speck of light in a film landscape dominated by doom and angst.That’s not what we are here to talk about today. Not yet at least. Today, we are here to discuss one of the many promotional items released before and after the film’s release, the junior novelization of Guardians of the Galaxy.The Story: An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy tells the story of a group of cosmic misfits--Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot--who band together to protect a mysterious orb against Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe.The Good: Bookworm has not read too many junior novelizations of movies, but this tome is a good example as it is definitely a junior novel. The plot and writing has been greatly simplified and the violence has been almost completely omitted or toned down. Thankfully, the writers did a good job of preserving the feel of Guardians of the Galaxy for those who have already seen the movie.Some may call kid friendly adaptations. a soulless cash grab but that is an unfair assessment. The film is not that offensive but it has enough violence and some swear words to earn its PG-13 rating. So it is probably not a good idea for little kids to see it. Nonetheless, this book is gentle enough that kids can read to their heart’s content. The children are the future and it is the duty of the Nerd sphere to guide and nurture the next generation of geeks.The Flaws: The most glaring flaw is the books ending: it is unfinished. It basically stops right before the big climax. This is probably due to the fact that it was released before the film’s release and they did not want to spoil the ending. Still, that could not prevent the feeling of let down upon the completion of this text. Its purpose is understandable and it would probably cause Bookworm to want to go see the movie (again). Still…Secondly, the book being simplified causes some details to be lost. Normally it is the book that is less detailed than the movie but in this case the book leaves out a lot.Final Verdict:While not as good as the real things and Bookworm looks forward to a real novelization, Guardians of the Galaxy: The Junior Novel, is exactly what is says it is and in spite of its changes remains a faithful adaptation to the source material and perfect for younger readers.Four out of Five Starsthecultureworm.blogspot.com

Definitely a good introduction to the Guardians Of The Galaxy By Amazon Customer VERY well done, for the adult readers (if you are reading it with your kids), it covers what appears to be the first 2/3rds of the film, leaving the big conclusion out. Well written and true to the characters while staying age appropriate.

By Selleree I liked this book.This book is basically a rumination of one transplant from NY to LA who has lived there for, what I'm guessing, is about 10-20 years. He is someone that used to take public transportation, walk a lot, and he was trying to apply the same mindset and walking options in LA. I can totally relate. I spent some time in LA myself, although a whole lot more recently, and I too was taking public transportation and walking in a car city, and I felt that he was really on point about many things. You really have a different, more direct interaction with the CITY when you're walking then when you're driving. I agree that the city has this mish mosh of OLD and NEW together at the same time, of PUBLIC and PRIVATE together at the same time, and REAL and FAKE at the same time, Indoor/ outdoor space at the same time, etc., the list goes on. Those are EXACTLY some of the same things I noticed in LA that other cities, like NY don't really have. And I love how those opposite worlds collide, I agree with the author, they make the city WHAT it is and make it great.He used a lot of movies, music, and cultural references in his writing, all of which I felt were very relevant. He also used a LOT of quotes, esp early on in the book, and I thought those were kind of annoying and didn't really connect well. I thought that he repeated himself a lot, which I wasn't totally against, but a little more diversity in his example and thoughts would have been nice. Although I suppose if you ARE ruminating, you DO repeat a lot and analyze the SAME thing from MANY ANGLES which is exactly what he did here. I enjoyed learning a lot of the facts about the city I didn't know. Like I didn't know LACMA didn't originally have an entrance on Wilshire. Having lived so close to there and passing it every day, that blows my mind. Also didn't know a lot of the history of the city, which I was happy to learn about.Overall, I liked this book. Warning to the new reader - it reads more like a highly analytical, diary with history and media thrown in then a guide book to LA and famous places. And I LIKED THIS TOO, I know all about the famous touristy places, been there done that. But it's the more LOCAL aspect that I enjoyed. As he described the streets he walked I could relate because I remember walking them too, and seeing those neighborhoods as well. It's all about the LOCAL aspect. The everyday. The growth of a city. And the continuing interchange between old and new. It was really nice to see his perspective.

A meditation about walking the sidewalks of a city known for drivers and highways and traffic jams. And more so, a meditation about slowing down to notice our relationship with where we live, how our identities and memories are interwoven with the physical space we share with others. Sidewalking feels in some ways like a companion piece to Joan Didion's Slouching Towards Bethlehem. Essays that give you a complex look at California and beg you to engage more in the world.

It is a smart, short personal take by a former New Yorker who truly knows Los Angeles and literally walks you through it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Nostalgic about these gatekeepers By Dr Jacques COULARDEAU This book is essential to understand a little bit more this Baja California. The old ranchero time, which is so young in retrospective, less that three centuries, or about, when human occupation is going beyond counted time, which is probably beyond the Ice Age, this time is vanishing.This ranchero agricultural and herding living styles are indeed vanishing because for one it does not pay any more what is needed to simply live in our modern world, and for a second reason because people want to have TV, all modern commodities and amenities and the possibility to go around, to celebrate, to educate themselves, to live on a grand scale, which is not exactly possible in such a desolate place. But the book is essential just to keep it alive in our memories and in our consciousness. And we must keep in mind that this poverty and these poor people are those who saved, kept, unknowingly about the value of it, the oldest heritage of Northern America, at least 20,000 years old or more, though no one has even dared to try and speculate, which means start some real geological and archaeological research.The phenomenal paintings on the rock faces of this peninsula are not yet properly dated because the paint used by the first inhabitants of this region does not contain any carbon and cannot be dated with standard methods. Then we should start excavating to find what is no longer visible, what is in the earth, covered up by centuries of dust. That has not been done. We should also really analyze these paintings and compare them with all the rock paintings we know in the world, including the oldest that seem to go back to 45,000 years ago, at least.But we must understand these simple people living there are the wardens of this treasure and we must also say that those who arrived from Europe were wise enough or unaware enough not to destroy this heritage and it is still there. It could really with some work and investment become a high spot of artistic tourism. Millions of people every year are visiting such sites all around the world, and even sites that are less old that this one.The strangest element I find I n this field is the opposition of geologists and archaeologists to just ask the question because it obviously cannot be seen as an appendage of the Clovis migration. It is totally disruptive of this hypothesis and dominant archaeological forces seem to be so attached to this Clovis hypothesis that they block any other approach with spite and arrogance, the way mandarins can do all over the world in any culture. It will fall one day, and soon, just the way the refusal of Africa as the nest of Homo Sapiens fell and the same way today we have pushed things so far back that we cannot even imagine Homo Sapiens emerging less than 300,000 years ago. It was a miserable 100,000 years ago some thirty years ago, and we know today Homo Sapiens arrived in Crete some 160,000 years ago. Things have obviously changed. Where is the time when Greenberg was laughed at when he pretended all human languages had only one source, one melting pot.And they will change in America too when we start digging in Chile and in Baja California, and probably some other sites, both in South, Meso- and North America. But let us thank these simple Californians from Baja California who have saved and kept this unique heritage. And let discover and understand their way of life, even if it is disappearing. They might and probably will be the touristic guides of tomorrow.Dr Jacques COULARDEAU

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. I almost never read non-fiction, but I loved this book. By E I was surprised by this book in the best of ways. I expected an interesting but ordinary legal nonfiction book along the lines of a mediocre text that rhymes with Schmuffalo Creek. As a law student, I was already deeply familiar with the Windsor case in terms of both its factual history and its legal outcome, so I wasn't sure how much this book would really offer me in terms of new information.I should have known better. Even someone who is totally unfamiliar with or uninterested in constitutional law will find something valuable in this book. Kaplan intertwines her personal journey from closeted law student to one of the legends of gay rights in the United States with Edie Windsor's fascinating life story as a gay computer programmer who became engaged to her spouse, Thea Spyer, in 1967 — over a decade before New York held its sodomy statute unconstitutional. Both stories are deeply moving, personal, and compelling even to a casual reader. I think it's rare for this kind of text to feel so honest, but I'm glad it is. I think there is a place for dispassionate analysis in law, but it is far from the only valuable trait in a writer or a lawyer. This is an exciting, emotional read, and I felt gripped with anticipation even though I knew how everything would turn out. Importantly, also, this is a funny book. There are parts I actually giggled out loud, which is rare for me even in reading fiction.Kaplan also discusses really interesting strategy choices as a litigator and civil rights advocate. This book raises a lot of issues around the politics of civil rights litigation and managing tensions, even within and among groups that have the same goals, and also has a lot of fascinating things to say about succeeding in our federal court system. Professors who teach advocacy or public interest classes might want to look into assigning this book as a good primer on and overview of successful advocacy in a civil rights context.

This is an incredible blend of legal procedure and personal story, a groundbreaking version of memoir. In as much as Edie Windsor is lesbian celebrity, it almost appeals to the voyeur--we learn so much more about her love and life. But, equally compelling, we also learn about Roberta Kaplan and how her mind worked in this, the most important case yet for her. We meet their friends and their colleagues, their hopes and their fears, their challenges and their breaks. This first-hand account of one of the most important cases of our times is as compelling as it is readable. Every lgbtqia person needs this in her library. Every legal scholar will enjoy the inside view of the arguments. Every library needs this own its shelf. This is how great love stories should be told.

I have not finished it, but I love this book so far! Edith Windsor and her wonderful spouse Thea Spyer put faces and hearts on the movement to legalize marriage equality. Roberta Kaplan is the smart, hardworking, courageous lawyer who fought for legal recognition of their Canadian marriage and the end of the Defense of Marriage Act before the United States Supreme Court and WON! How brilliant to frame the question as one about estate taxation!!!! I will buy this in hardback for signatures of my heroes Robbie and Edie when they visit a bookstore near me. In the meantime, READ THIS BOOK! And be grateful for lawyers like Roberta Kaplan!

Deserves a prominent place on your story craft bookshelf By Monica Leonelle There are a lot of things to love about Libbie Hawker's outlining process, and tons of insights to garner from this book!I first heard of the book on the Self-Publishing Podcast, where Libbie charmed me with her confidence and good-natured attitude. Then it showed up in the Also-Boughts of a book I wrote. I'm already a plotter, but currently working on bulking up my own outlining process and reading TONS of outlining/scriptwriting books, so I had to pick it up. I was not disappointed!Here are some of the insights I gained from this book:- How to put character arc first -My go-to bible for outlining is Story Engineering by Larry Brooks, but he admittedly focuses a lot on plot points. I was trying to figure out how to overlay character arc onto his 4-box story architecture and coming up short. Characterization has always been a struggle for me, so this isn't a huge surprise.Libbie's section on character arc helped connect a lot of the dots for me, and was well worth 10x the price of the book alone. Oddly enough, I have the book she mentions multiple times—The Anatomy of Story by John Truby—and was skim-reading it just before I read this book! BUT I did not pick out the character arc information I needed from that (maybe an argument against skim-reading?). Libbie's focus on character arc was exactly what I needed to make things "click." She explained her version of it simply and concisely. I now want to go back to John Truby's explanation and see if I understand it.- Antagonists and Allies -I had really never heard of an Ally before and this is a key insight that Libbie's book talks about in detail. They way she explains allies is *really* easy to understand. I immediately figured out several of my protagonist's allies in this outline I'm working on. Once you know your allies, a lot of scenes just before the resolution fall into place. Cool stuff!- The Character Flaw -Libbie's character arc revolves around one simple idea—that the character has a deep flaw that determines both the internal and external conflict for the entire book. She provides examples from Lolita and Charlotte's Web to drive this point home—and again, a lot of pieces clicked into place for me.In other books, the character flaw is talked about in vague or wishy-washy terms. It's "inner demons" or "internal conflict," which has historically shed very little insight on characterization for me. No more! I'm confident that my characterization will improve leaps and bounds just by understanding the character flaw and how it plays out in the character arc.- Theme as a filter -Most storytelling books relegate theme to the bottom of the heap, focusing primarily on plot or characterization. Libbie gives theme a prominent place and suggests using it as a filter for what makes it into your book. I again found this extremely helpful in the same way I found the character arc section helpful—I'm trying to map concepts of theme, character, and so on onto the 4-box story architecture. Libbie didn't go into a ton of detail about theme, but no bother—there are other books that explain it in detail. This one idea was easily worth the price of admission alone and again, connected several dots for me.- Plotting multi-protagonist books -Libbie's ideas about plotting for multiple protagonists reaffirmed a lot of what I already sensed but hadn't quite been able to put into practice. She provides easy-to-understand examples from her own work and confirmed that every character needs its own arc plotted. She also confirmed that sometimes your protagonists will be each other's antagonists—and that this is a good thing, helpful in unifying the book rather than telling stories in parallel. All in all, a fantastic discussion on multiple protagonists that most story craft books either completely skip over or only briefly mention.Overall, Libbie has a ton of great insight and lots of NEW ideas about outlining that make this book insanely valuable. That's why I gave it 5 stars.BUT, I would caution that the book belongs on the shelf and isn't a one-stop shop on craft. I say that because, while I think Libbie agrees that writers should read other books on the subject, she makes it really easy to understand and think, "yeah, I got a handle on all of this." She's like one of those fantastic professors in college who makes you feel so smart and makes the material so fun that you decide not to study too hard for the final. Then, you get a 77% and you're like, "What? I thought I understood this!"While Libbie's method is easy-to-understand, I still recommend attempting to map it onto the traditional three-act structure as homework. I did this last night (I used the 4-box structure provided in Story Engineering) and it was not nearly as easy or straightforward as I thought it would be. However, the exercise is a big reason for the connected dots I keep mentioning. There were so many freaking a-ha moments—I was basically in heaven when it all fell into place.In doing that, I also realized I had new questions that I need to explore on my own. For example:- Can an ally be a thing or idea, rather than a person? An antagonist can often be an antagonistic force instead of a person—the person is usually a symbol of the force. I believe the answer to the question is probable "yes."- Should the antagonist be introduced as late as Libbie suggests? Other architectures seem to introduce or at least mention the antagonist earlier. Libbie does point out that the antagonist can be a character who essentially becomes antagonistic at that specific point in the outline… however, I'm still a bit unsure of what would work for me, and need to keep digging for that connective tissue to my personal style.The second thing I recommend as homework is to dig into scene structure a bit more. Libbie has a section on pacing, and while easy to understand, I sense that many writers will benefit from the more formal study of scenes and sequels to see where these simpler explanations come from. I think Randy Ingermanson (the Snowflake Method) has several articles on this topic if you want to get your feet wet.So, I guess this is all my long-winded way of saying that I believe this book is fantastic for both beginners who find most story craft books a bit daunting and confusing (as I did when I first started and still do at times), AND writers with several books under their belts who are focusing on something specific to improve (like theme, or character arc, or pacing).BUT don't skip the fundamentals completely. Do the optional reading Libbie suggests to understand the theory behind many of her insightful conclusions. Some of the books I'm enjoying right now are Story Engineering, The Anatomy of a Story (Libbie's suggested book), and Story by Robert McKee. This text greatly enriches my understanding of these other meatier and more complex story craft books—but I wouldn't consider it a replacement. And based on Libbie's candor within the book, I don't think she intended it to be.

Rider A friend of mine who read this book the same day I did said, "It's so rare to come upon a book that changes your writing process at this point. I wasn't expecting this." I'm quoting her because she said it better first. :) This book changed not only my process but my understanding of a number of aspects of storytelling. I could almost hear the clicks in my head as things that I had kind-of-sort-of-maybe grasped before dropped solidly into place.Typically my outlines, though complete (in that they cover all the way from the beginning to the end), are a good five manuscript drafts away from being a solid-enough story to send to my editor, because my outlines have, up till now, been about what happens in the story ("this, then that, but then, so they"). When I've planned out a story, I've typically put a character in a situation, then worked it all out from there.Take Off Your Pants approaches it from an entirely different direction, and that approach just...literally unlocked "story" for me. I now have three storyline outlines for a current project that are SOLID, and if I do happen to get stuck during the writing of it, I now know how to solve the problem and get the story going again. ~In the first draft.~I don't know that my first drafts will go any faster than they usually do (something Libbie promises in the book), but I can definitely see a time-and-effort savings in subsequent drafts, which I now expect I'll be editing mainly for prose rather than structure and character.This book may have been the best investment I've made for my writing career—at $2.99 it was a complete steal.

Crowl Useful book in terms of making you think more carefully about the construction of your book with two caveats:1. Hawker uses her Pocahontas book as an example but never mentions that the book was already worked out to a great extent before she started doing her outline. By which I mean that when she comes to do the outline it's plain that this book hasn't suddenly popped into her mind, an impression she gives early on when she tells the publisher she can produce her next book in a few weeks.2. I'm not entirely convinced that a main character has to have a flaw in order for them to have an arc. There's a strong school of thought that the main character has to want something greatly, and that during the course of reaching their goal their lives may change; whether they start with a flaw or not is another matter altogether. I think books can be written from both the 'flaw' perspective' and the 'major desire' perspective. And then of course there are extremely bestselling books like the Jack Reacher series (or to go back generations, Bertie Wooster and Jeeves) in which in book after book the main character barely changes at all. Those sorts of books seem to me to be constructed on a different method altogether...but I'm willing to be proved wrong.
