1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This book covers some basic sports psychology principals but translation issues mar the overall quality of the book By Scott D. Rushing This book is not very well written in my opinion. A huge distraction for me is in the language used. Perhaps there was a poor translation done to the digital version (which is what I purchased) but the digital version is full of broken sentences and poor grammar such as "Close your eye and float of your body" or "I work a lot of businesses and athletes...". If you can get past the grammar related issues, which are distracting, the principles presented by the author are fairly basic and I don't agree with his assessment that "if you take the same actions as someone succeeding, you will get the same results". I think recognizing the successful characteristics of someone who has had success is a tool that can help someone want to improve their performance, but just because you take the same steps they take doesn't mean you will achieve the same results.They author does stress to not focus on what you don't want to have happen because it creates a negativity and a focus on what we don't want to happen, and he stressed having a positive attitude and controlling your physical body with breathing and tension. So he does discuss some critical strategies for success but I think overall that's done in a simplistic way and without a lot of in-depth explanation or strategies to help the reader improve on those things.

The author explains the mindset of psychology behind being successful and what peak performance is. Having a positive attitude is important along with self discipline to attain your goals. What I found interesting is how to make your own body more effective, even for a business person. It is also very important to stay focused on your goals. At the end of each chapter their are exercises to complete to help with performance, these are very helpful.

You get the feeling that the strips are pressed together and the proportions feel a bit distorted. But the print quality otherwise is OK and it is nice to be allowed to read such a lot of this unreprinted classic. Somebody ought to make a high-quality edition of the sundays in color - like with Alley Oop. Same with Ming Foo who deserves to be remebered in good reprint.

President Harry Truman was a disappointment to the Democrats, and a godsend to the Republicans. Every attempt to paint Truman with the grace, charm, and grandeur of Franklin Delano Roosevelt had been a dismal failure: Truman’s virtues were simpler, plainer, more direct. The challenges he faced—stirrings of civil rights and southern resentment at home, and communist aggression and brinkmanship abroad—could not have been more critical. By the summer of 1948 the prospects of a second term for Truman looked bleak. Newspapers and popular opinion nationwide had all but anointed as president Thomas Dewey, the Republican New York Governor. Truman could not even be certain of his own party’s nomination: the Democrats, still in mourning for FDR, were deeply riven, with Henry Wallace and Strom Thurmond leading breakaway Progressive and Dixiecrat factions.Finally, with ingenuity born of desperation, Truman’s aides hit upon a plan: get the president in front of as many regular voters as possible, preferably in intimate settings, all across the country. To the surprise of everyone but Harry Truman, it worked. Whistle Stop is the first book of its kind: a micro-history of the summer and fall of 1948 when Truman took to the rails, crisscrossing the country from June right up to Election Day in November. The tour and the campaign culminated with the iconic image of a grinning, victorious Truman holding aloft the famous Chicago Tribune headline: “Dewey Defeats Truman.”

Munro The election of 1948 is one of the most significant presidential elections in all American history. The Republican Party could almost taste an easy victory over plain little Harry Truman. After all, the Republicans had won control of Congress in 1946. They had a dream ticket -it appeared to many observers- in moderate liberal Governor Thomas E. Dewey of New York and progressive Republican Earl Warren of California. Shortages and strikes, though no longer as troublesome as earlier, remained a worry for many Americans. In addition as the Cold War heated up with the Stalin’s Berlin Blockade the world seemed, once again, to be on the brink of nuclear war. Could Harry Truman, a man who had never won a national election and who became president by accident be trusted to lead America in this critical time? Could Truman even win the Democratic nomination? The Democrats were divided on the Civil Rights issue and Southern “Dixiecrats” might bolt the party, weakening the Democratic coalition.This is the fascinating story of Whistlestop by Phillip White, author of Our Supreme Task. To those who have read the biographies of American presidents and US history the outline of the story is well-known. But Phillip White shows that Truman and his advisors, facing defeat, rose to the challenge with a vigorous and skilled response that, in retrospect is nothing more than heroic. This response was to have the president meet as many voters in person as possible all over the country armed with localized and personalized information about every city, every county and every state that Truman visited. Information, we have long known, is power but this inner story of the Democratic National Committee’s Research Division is crucial to understanding Truman’s victory. Truman travelled over 30,000 miles and gave, on average, 16 speeches a day. meeting millions of Americans. Truman was not a great public speaker, as White points out, compared to his contemporizes FDR, Churchill or even the firebrand Strom Thurmond but he demonstrated deep knowledge of the issues that concerned the American people, passion and his persona as a “down-home” man of the people was believable because it was evident to all who met him that Truman was a good and true man. But, as Phillip White points out if Truman had not be able to connect to so many middle-of-the-road voters he would not have won the election.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Truman Defeats Dewey By HBM Whistle Stop is a compelling and detailed recounting of Harry Truman's tour on the Last Chance Special. The story is familiar: Thomas Dewey was guaranteed victory by the pollsters and media during the fall of 1948, but Truman battled back - touring over 31,000 miles during the campaign. Dewey's own train was the Victory Special. White's book stands out because it focuses on Truman's tour and the work of the DNC's Research Division. In 1948 the now-familiar campaign `war room' was a novelty.The technology may have changed over the past 6 decades, but some issues sound familiar: Truman comparing Dewey to Hitler (it may have been a campaign first) and Truman dealing with a `do-nothing' Congress. Truman showed his convictions by issuing an Executive Order desegregating the military. The Order led to a split in Truman's own party and the creation of the States' Rights Democratic Party (Dixiecrats).Overall, Whistle Stop is an excellent book for anyone interested in a great story.

By WDeaver As an eighth-grader at Mojave Elementary in Mojave CA in 1948, I watched with my brother Mike Deaver as Harry Truman spoke from the rear of the Ferdinand Magellan. Years later, Mike rode the same car with Ronald Reagan as a member of his staff!The story has uncanny parallels to what our current president faces...Only problem is the author referring to the Magellan as a "train" rather than as a car, and other unfamiliarity with 1940s technology.Great David vs. Goliath story well-told.

At least I won't miss the Ultimate Universe By iconoclast The plot is almost decent, but the art looks as though they took a random guy off the street to draw it - I literally think that my 14-year old could have done as well in half of the book. You can barely tell who the different characters are because the art is so bad, but that's almost forgivable since the script is written in such a bland format that it barely matters who says any of the lines anyway.There is a very limited amount of development in Bombshells character and everyone else seems to be there as a fill-in.It really seems like Marvel Execs said "Well we're going to end the Ultimate Universe soon so let's make sure nobody misses it by making the last book awful." Ultimate FF had some charm, this has not even that much.

Each wrap up of the 3 couples progressively got worse. Charity and Marc's story had no plot or real purpose. What made this novella even worse was all of the gramnar mistakes. Names were changed from sentence to sentence, even the main character Sara had her name changed. Ms. Smith had a horrible editor/proof reader. So disappointed I spent money on this. I should not have preordered the book-I should have waited and read the reviews

The thing that bothered me was the incorrect grammar in places, and sometimes the dialog was a little stilted. Also, words sometimes were incorrectly used. For instance, the last line of this novella was I will always out you first instead of PUT you first. I have noticed that this happens in the majority of the kindle books I read.

I read this novella because I had read the other books in this series and it really wasn't necessary. It had forced storylines with spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. Don't waste your money or time.

By THowerton "Time Runs Out" Vol. 2 collects and orders Avengers (2012) 38-9 and New Avengers (2013) 26-8 and continues what is turning out to be a very long, perhaps overly long, saga. Huge Improvement Over Previous Volume By David Swan I was not particularly impressed with the second volume of Adventures of Superman and gave the book a very generous four stars. I am delighted to say the volume three is not only a vast improvement, it is the best yet. This was the kind of material I was hoping for when I heard about the series. If you were disappointed by volume 2 give this series another chance.Here are the stories in this collection.The Dark Lantern – Writer Jim Kreuger, Pencils by Neil Edwards, The Green Lantern charged with protecting Krypton learns of the doomed planets sole survivor and seeks out Superman hoping the Man of Steel will deliver justice and kill him. In the end it turns out a longtime Superman foe was orchestrating the whole confrontation. A good start to the volume.The Demolisher – Writer Peter Milligan, Art by Agustin Padilla, Criminals beware. A new vigilante has arrived in Metropolis and The Demolisher doesn’t mess around. He starts by crushing the hands of the Toyman and putting Bruno “Ugly” Mannheim in intensive care. Now THIS is what I’m talking about. If you’re going to write a Superman story out of continuity go for it. I was sure that it was going to turn out that Superman was being affected by Red Kryptonite but nope. Does Superman act out of character? Yes. Is it a compelling story? Yes.Exposed – Writer B. Clay Moore, Art by Gabriel Rodriguez - A grungy reporter for a small rival newspaper of the Daily Planet has been trying to connect the dots around Superman and believes he’s discovered a bombshell of a secret. Unfortunately his investigation gets him in way over his head including a dangerous encounter with Metallo.The Sound of One Hand Clapping – Writer Max Landis, Art by Jock, Almost the entire story is one conversation between The Joker and Superman. I absolutely loved this one. The Joker is always shown as practically omnipotent which doesn’t really make sense since he’s technically a normal human, just one with a preternatural resourcefulness. In this story The Joker decides to tug on Superman’s cape and discovers he’s WAY out of his league. Batman, who unfortunately always seems to get the better of Superman, also finds out what happens when you get on his wrong side. This is another story where Superman acted in a non-traditional way but it works brilliantly. My favorite story in the book.The Coming of… Sugar and Spike-? – Writer Fabian Nicieza, Pencils by Phil Hester, Clark Kent agrees to watch a pair of toddlers for some friends and the boy and girl turn out to be classic DC characters Sugar and Spike. Not only does Superman learn what a handful they are so does the Atomic Skull.Only child – Writer Ron Marz, Art by Evan “Doc” Shaner, What would happen if Superman met the robot from the movie Iron Giant? Although the giant robot is never referred to as the Iron Giant he’s a dead ringer. Good Story.Strange visitor – Writer Joe Keatinge, Art by a bunch of people, This is a story that requires at least a couple of read throughs. It’s narrated by Kamandi who tells about Superman who apparently is nigh on immortal and survives even to the end of the universe. There is a continuing thread about a Red Kryptonite rocket that ceases to exist upon launch and the mystery behind its disappearance. This cover of the book is from this story and it’s one of the more memorable ones.Seed of destruction – Writer Jerry Ordway, Art by Steve Rude, This is a very neat team-up of Superman and OMAC (One Man Army Corps) and a nice homage to Jack Kirby including attempts to emulate his writing and drawing style.Ghosts of krypton – Writer Steve Niles, Art by Matthew and Dow Smith, Superman is haunted by the ghost of a dead Kryptonian.Mystery box – Kelly Sue DeConnick, Art by Valentine De Landro, The book ends with a woman’s perspective. Superman gets a lead lined Valentines gift from Lois and he tries to figure out what it is as he fights battles alongside Batman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman. A great way to finish the book.

Overall Strong Superman Anthology By Tim Field The Adventures of Superman which features non-continuity stories by assorted writers and artists is a mixed bag of tales. This third collection has some gems, including tales featuring the Joker, a Green Lantern, an Iron Giant homage, and a Steve Rude Omac story. The biggest clunker for me was the Sugar and Spike tale - Sheldon Mayer must be spinning in his grave.A fine collection for those who are not fans of a grim and gritty Superman.
