Winning A Debate With An Israel-Hater: How to Effectively Challenge Anti-Israel Extremists in Your Neighborhood, by Michael Harris About the Author Dr. Michael Harris is one of the founders of San Francisco Voice for Israel, which is now the Bay Area chapter of StandWithUs. Founded in 2004, SF Voice for Israel has countered anti-Israel demonstrations, to provide the public and the media with an alternative to the lies being promoted by organizations such as International ANSWER and Jewish Voice for Peace. It has also done proactive public outreach at community events and brought pro-Israel speakers to the Bay Area. As part of StandWithUs, founded in 2001, the group is now part of a worldwide Israel education organization with chapters across the US as well as in Europe and Australia. In his role with the group, Dr. Harris has made appearances on radio shows (both in the US and in Israel) and television news reports as a local spokesperson, countering misinformation about Israel. He’s given speeches to large groups at synagogues, churches, political organizations and senior citizen centers throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. In addition, he’s been in the trenches, standing up for Israel against anti-Israel demonstrators on the streets of San Francisco and Oakland for nearly a decade. In his spare time, he is a pediatrician in Marin County, California.

Surbeck Dr. Mike Harris (he's a real MD, not a doctor in philosohpy) just published this little gem of a book that everyone with even the most remote interest in Israel advocacy will absolutely want to get a copy of right now. The title may sound like a tad ambitious, but Mike knows what he's talking about. As one of the leaders of pro-Israel activism in the Bay Area, one of the nation's worst den of brainwashed leftists, he's come face-to-face on more than one occasion with what he refers to clinically (he's a doc, after all) as PIDS, i.e. People with Israel Derangement Syndrome. Good diagnostic, doc!As a result, his book is filled with information and sensible advice on how to handle some of the most common situations that pro-Israel activists find themselves in when confronting PIDS either in our country or in Canada. The depth of Mike's knowledge of history will impress you, and you will find yourself reading his book as others would enjoy a fine liqueur. If you have kids in college, order as many copies as you need and send them this book right now. Even if they're not directly involved in pro-Israel activities on campus, it will give them (or reinforce) an identification to Israel and maybe give them the knowledge they need to stand up to their own PIDS (who as we know tend to live and multiply in higher numbers in academia than in the real world). Kudos to Dr. Mike for a remarkable job!

A Necessary Corrective By Carlos Laflauta Dr. Harris has written an important and comprehensive refutation of the growing trend to “solve” the Middle East conflict by demonizing only one side, Israel. With numerous examples from history and from the present day he shows that the reality is far more complex, and that Palestinian obstruction of the peace process is often overlooked. He points out that Israel made several peace offers to the Palestinians that they refused, the most notorious in 2000 when instead of even proposing a counteroffer Yasser Arafat responded to Israel’s overture of peace by starting a bloody war that lasted five years.Harris notes that by their own rhetoric and behavior, Palestinians have shown that their agenda is not peaceful coexistence with Israel but rather Israel’s elimination. The refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish state, the insistence on a “right of return” that would turn Israel into a second Palestinian state, the repeated attacks on civilians within recognized Israel (inside the “Green Line”) including suicide bombings and thousands of rockets launched at Israel’s population centers, all exemplify a Palestinian intention of wiping out Israel entirely. This is why one cannot understand this conflict simply through the lens of “occupation,” as important as that is. Harris points out that Israel’s ending the occupation of Gaza resulted in rocket attacks from Gaza that continue to this day. Ending the occupation of the West Bank without producing a similar and even more dangerous escalation of violence against cities within Israel’s heartland is a problem that cannot be solved until Palestinian intentions are reformed, and that cannot happen as long as blame is cast only upon Israel.Harris comes out strongly for the two-state solution, and observes that many of Israel’s critics do not. The “BDS” movement (boycott, divestment, and sanctions) has indicated in its official statements that its agenda is Israel’s elimination. It is an immoral agenda couched in the language of morality. The fact is that without Israel, Jews living in the Middle East would be subject to persecution by the Arab majority as they have been for generations. The real racism, Harris notes, is the insistence that of all the world’s nationalities, Jews are the only one that does not deserve the right to self-determination.Harris’s “30 second” answer to Israel’s critics sums it up nicely:“We’re here today to stand up for Israel’s right to exist as the state of the Jewish people. Israel wants peace, but it’s facing enemies who call for its elimination and who launch rockets at millions of Israeli civilians. Israel has offered a Palestinian state but has been answered with calls for jihad and genocide.”Indeed, Palestinian anti-Jewish incitement, including even Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas publicly labeling Jews as “dirty” and “filthy” and joining completely false accusations against Israel of plotting to attack Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem, has been going on for many years and is a largely unreported but highly significant cause of the current violence. How can the Palestinian people ever accept peace with Israel if their leaders consistently refuse to prepare them for it, instead feeding the frenzy of anti-Jewish hatred that has existed for centuries in the Muslim world?Harris’s book will help prepare those who know that making Israel uniquely responsible for the problems in the Middle East is wrong but who don’t quite know what to say. Harris accomplishes this with both clarity and a very engaging and entertaining sense of humor. It used to be the Arab side that pushed for more “even-handed” policies and presentations. Harris puts to the test how “even-handed” Israel’s critics are willing to be. It’s about time.

Its accurate, amusing and an essential tool for people who love Israel, and want to tell her side of the story.
