The book has thorough research but does not shy from adding the human element. Penn Traffic is another regional department store chain that disappeared in the changing retail environment of the last 40 years. The Penn Traffic Company is studied in a manner that offers insight into how the company changed and eventually collapsed, all with photographs, old advertising and anecdotes from former employees and customers. I too once sat on Santa's lap in the Johnstown store (1960's) and I later frequented the PT store in a nearby town, begging my mother to buy me "PF Flyers" there. A nice piece of nostalgia for those living in western and central Pennsylvania where such fascinating stores have now been replaced by the generic, boxy and boring WalMarts.

Michael is a bit of a bore; at first he's stern and serious, and later he’s neutered and neutral. Thankfully, his relationship with Janice can be fixed with a red pen and some patience. Bailey York is an aspiring romance novelist, and she's having trouble turning Michael into a leading man worthy of both Janice and publication. When she runs into dashing Parker Davidson on the train, she may have found both her muse and her hero.

I think the publisher should have to republished it under the same name. I purchased this book thinking it was a new book by Debbie Macomber but after I purchased it I found out I had already read it under another title. I like the author Debbie Macomber but this is not the first time one of her books was republished under another name.

A romance for romance writers By Aletheia Tamewitz Romance writer Bailey York is through with love in real life after being left nearly at the altar twice. Then she meets Parker Davidson, who is the epitome of everything she wants the hero of her book to be. Will she be content with merely writing about him, or will she let him be the hero in her real life? In this book, Macomber cleverly addresses the faults in how the hero is written in the typical romance novel, and in doing so highlights how much different, how much more real the character of Parker is. It's funny, insightful, unique, and something I have read over and over for years. I'm sure anyone who reads it once will do the same!

"It was dawn before I fell asleep, and later in the morning I was only half-awake as I fed a fresh sheet of paper into the typewriter and began to copy the notes from the previous day out of my book. But I wasn't too weary to type the date line firmly as if I'd been writing date lines all my life: from the front at iwo jima march 5-- Then I remembered and added two words. under fire-- They looked great." In 1965, Wisconsin native Georgette "Dickey" Chapelle became the first female American war correspondent to be killed in action. Now, "Dickey Chapelle Under Fire" shares her remarkable story and offers readers the chance to experience Dickey's wide-ranging photography, including several photographs taken during her final patrol in Vietnam. Dickey Chapelle fought to be taken seriously as a war correspondent and broke down gender barriers for future generations of female journalists. She embedded herself with military units on front lines around the globe, including Iwo Jima and Okinawa, the Dominican Republic, and Vietnam. Dickey sometimes risked her life to tell the story--after smuggling aid to refugees fleeing Hungary, she spent almost two months in a Hungarian prison. For twenty-five years, Dickey's photographs graced the pages of "National Geographic," the "National Observer," "Life," and others. Her tenacity, courage, and compassion shine through in her work, highlighting the human impact of war while telling the bigger story beyond the battlefield. In "Dickey Chapelle Under Fire," the American public can see the world through Dickey's lens for the first time in almost fifty years, with a foreword by Jackie Spinner, former war correspondent for "The Washington Post."

Dickey Chapelle Under Fire: Photographs by the First American Female War Correspondent Killed in Action, by John Garofolo

Review

Publisher's Weekly Starred Review- Garofolo, an Iraq War veteran and former entertainment industry executive, assembles the first-ever collection of the work of Georgette "Dickey" Chappelle, who pursued a photojournalism career at a time when practically no women did, beginning in WWII. The Wisconsin native's love of aviation and photography led her to abandon her studies at MIT and hang around military bases instead. She flunked out, married, and persuaded the Navy—despite her Navy husband's objections—to let her cover the front lines in the Pacific. Chapelle eagerly went on to cover events in Hungary, Algeria, Cuba, Lebanon, the Dominican Republic, and, fatefully, Vietnam. Despite winning awards for her work, she struggled for assignments; when she got them, she earned less pay than her male counterparts. Her arresting black and white photos capture lasting scenes: grotesquely wounded soldiers, children caught in conflict, and summary executions of combatants. But it's a colleague's photo that haunts this book: the 47-year-old Chapelle laying mortally wounded after being hit by shrapnel while on patrol with Marines in South Vietnam. The commandant of the Marine Corps called Chapelle "one of us," and her body of work surely deserves the wider recognition this book provides. 153 b&w photos. (Publisher's Weekly Starred review, Sept. 2015) John Garofolo's work is not only a fine read, it is a must for any who have experienced combat, especially those of us who continue to tell the Marine Corps story. (Capt Jack T. Paxton, USMC (Ret,) Leatherneck Magazine, November 2015) Dickey Chapelle Under Fire  is a moving important legacy to Dickey Chapelle as well as the many men and woman who run head first into harm's way in order to protect those present, left behind, as well as humanity as a whole. For that I believe it should be included in all Library, Historical and Art History Collections as a record of the First American Female Correspondent Killed in Action, her work, and the unsettling history of the time. (Karen Chutsky, Chutsky's Bookshelf, Midwest Book Review, February 2016) Chapelle’s courage and unflagging determination are an example for all, and, thankfully, John Garofolo’s Dickey Chapelle Under Fire brings her little-known story and work into the light. Garofolo has studied her work for over 20 years, and this book is a wonderful (and needed) step in recognizing Chapelle’s contribution to photojournalism. (Jenny Montgomery, PhotoLife, March 8, 2016)

By Mike O'Connor Until recently, Dickey Chapelle, who was a trailblazer for female war correspondents, has been lost in the fogs of time due to her tragic death early in the Vietnam War. Fortunately, John Garofolo's newly-published DICKEY CHAPELLE UNDER FIRE, PHOTOGRAPHS BY THE FIRST AMERICAN FEMALE WAR CORRESPONDENT KILLED IN ACTION, restores Chapelle to her rightful place of honor. A 2015 Wisconsin Historical Society Press release, Garofolo's book demonstrates what a crack photographer Chapelle was.A Milwaukee native, Georgette Louise Meyer's early dreams of being an aerial explorer like her hero, Admiral Richard Byrd, were subverted by her mother who directed the young girl's energies into writing. Ever the dutiful daughter, Georgette - who adopted the nickname 'Dickey' in honor of Byrd - took up writing but maintained her interest in flying. After flunking out of M.I.T., Chapelle's writing career took off, eventually landing her a spot with TWA's New York publicity department. There she met Tony Chapelle and they married in 1940. In 1941 she sold her first photo essay to LOOK magazine. When her husband enlisted in the Navy after Pearl Harbor, Chapelle obtained military press credentials and the rest is history. In 1945, she covered the battles for Okinawa and Iwo Jima. She subsequently covered the rebuilding of postwar Europe, the Hungarian Revolution, fighting in Lebanon, Cuba and other hot spots, the Korean War and the beginnings of the Vietnam War. She was killed by a Viet Cong land mine in 1965.Garofolo's book reproduces over 130 of Chapelle's photographs. Those pix have an immediacy, a humanity, a you-are-there quality that brought her vivid, powerful images to life. Sadly, one of the last photographs in the book shows Chapelle lying dead on the ground, being given the last rites by a USN chaplain.Dickey Chapelle not only snapped memorable images but, just as importantly, fought for equal treatment for women reporters. DICKEY CHAPELLE UNDER FIRE is a long-overdue and well-deserved tribute to this pioneering war correspondent. Highly recommended.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Female War Correspondent By JCGirl Of the 236 years that the United States of America has been a country, we have been in some conflict of war for 214 years of them. Through the decades, many war correspondence (mostly men) have brought us into the heat of battle with riveting stories from the frontline. One such journalist captured those images on her camera. The book Dickey Chapelle Under Fire: Photographs by the First Female War Correspondent Killed in Action by John Garofolo is a 162-page tribute to Dickey through snapshots taken during World War II in the Pacific up to the Vietnam War. As the pages turned showing black and white photos taken by Dickey, author Garofolo also brings you insight into her fascinating life. This book is a devotion to the people that she photographed, now coming out 50 years after her death in Vietnam, where a landmine killed her. A true adventurer her images will now live on forever showing the actual story of war. After reading this book, I became more interested in who Dickey was, so I highly recommend a biography on her by Roberta Ostroff entitled in the Wind: The Life of Dickey Chapelle.

By ChibiNeko If you're a manga/anime fan, odds are that you've heard of Magic Knight Rayearth in some form or fashion. How could you not? It's by the incredibly talented mangaka team of CLAMP, which is oft heralded as the crème de la crème of the manga world and it's easy to see why. Regardless of what the current lineup is, their artwork is almost always something to admire. This volume collects the second half of the Magic Knight Rayearth series into one big, wonderful volume. While I know that there's some that dislike the idea of having 600+ pages of manga in one big volume, the price on this (about twenty dollars in bookstores, much less here on Amazon) is rather good- which is going to be a relief for many fans used to shelling out nine to twelve dollars for one manga that might be around 200-300 pages. It's cost effective when you consider how much manga you're getting, which is something any manga fan will like. (There's a reason people joke that drugs would probably be cheaper than indulging your otaku habit!)Now for the artwork. Unfortunately the copy I was given seemed to be pixellated at points, possibly to deter from theft, but the funny thing about this is that even despite this, the CLAMP artwork still looked pretty good. If it's going to be on par with the quality of the previous volume, you'll be in for an artwork treat. (My copy was an electronic galley, so no worries about the physical copies having any sort of glitches.)What interested me most was the translation. I remember my old TokyoPop translations of the series, and even though it'd been a while since I'd read my editions I noticed a difference in the translation. It's similar enough that you won't shake your fist and say that someone translated wrong in either camp, but it's different enough that it was like a different experience, one that I liked. There are no worries about Dark Horse pulling some cutesy "let's rename EVERYTHING for the English speaking audience" nonsense, but then I'd imagine that those fears were mostly allayed by the release of the previous volume. The end result is that this is a collection worth having. I'm not savvy enough with translations to know which of the TokyoPop or Dark Horse translations were closer to the source material, but if you're someone that's debating whether or not to get the Dark Horse books or scarf up TokyoPop's big book release of the series through some other source, go for the Dark Horse. The volume is nicer looking and seems like it'd last longer through multiple readings. (I'd seen editions of the TP one that were literally falling apart on the shelves, and that's when they were brand new.)5 out of 5 stars(ARC provided through NetGalley)

Poet And Social Activist By Dave_42 "Julia Ward Howe 1819 - 1910" by Laura Richards and Maud Howe Elliott is a biography of a woman who was in many ways the moral cornerstone of the United States throughout her life. She was a poet, and a social activist fighting for the abolitionist cause, and later for the cause of the Greeks and Armenians in their fight for freedom and survival against the Turks. The edition of the biography which I am reviewing is the two volume set published in March of 1916 by the Houghton Mifflin Company. Volume I is a seventeen chapter 392 page volume which covers her entire life. The focus of this volume are the major events in her life, starting with her ancestry as the great-granddaughter of Samuel Ward who was the Governor of Rhode Island and a delegate to the Continental Congress. On her maternal side, she was the granddaughter of Sarah Mitchell Cutler, who was a niece of Francis Marion (a.k.a. the "Swamp Fox") who was a lieutenant colonel in the continental army. The book then has chapters on her childhood, early adulthood, her writing, the Civil War, her travels, and her support for causes such as "The Peace Crusade" and woman's rights.Volume II includes 15 chapters and an Index for both volumes, and is a total of 434 pages. This volume covers her life from the age of 58 through the end of her life in a much more personal way than the first volume. It draws a tremendous amount of material from her personal journals and letters, while the first volume uses a more diverse collection of sources. Each chapter in both volumes starts with one of her poems as a header. While one gets many of her poems included in these volumes, it is surprising that the only copy of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" included is a fold-out copy (in volume one) of her hand-written first draft. I would have appreciated it if an easier to read printing of the hymn had been included as well. Of course, it is not that difficult to find the words to the "Battle Hymn of the Republic", but it certainly would have been preferable to me to have them included in one of these two volumes.Laura Richards and Maud Howe Elliott were the two youngest daughters of Julia Ward Howe and Samuel Gridley Howe, and assisted by Florence Howe Hall, another of Julia's daughters. They were able to make this biography feel much more personal as a result of writing about someone who they knew so well. It is not surprising that this biography was the first winner of the Pulitzer Prize for biographies in 1917.

Through letters written across continents during World War II, two former co-workers find love Twenty hours have gone since I last wrote. I have been thinking of you. I shall think of you until I post this, and until you get it. Can you feel, as you read these words, that I am thinking of you now; aglow, alive, alert at the thought that you are in the same world, and by some strange chance loving me. In September 1943, Chris Barker was serving as a signalman in North Africa when he decided to brighten the long days of war by writing to old friends. One of these was Bessie Moore, a former work colleague. The unexpected warmth of Bessie's reply changed their lives forever. Crossing continents and years, their funny, affectionate, and intensely personal letters are a remarkable portrait of a love played out against the backdrop of World War II. Above all, their story is a stirring example of the power of letters to transform ordinary lives.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Simply wonderful. By Ladycraft Received my preorder two days ago. Love Chris and Bessie. Such a lovely couple. Oh boy, that man can write. I'd fall for him too. BTW, if an audiobook is ever released, it simply has to be with Louise Brealey and Benedict Cumberbatch. They did such an excellent job at the Hay Festival that I can't imagine anyone else doing it. I'd pay any price asked.

"James Risen has established himself as the finest national security reporter of this generation, a field crowded with first rank talent." —Newsweek “An important and powerful book that should be read by anyone who believes it is time to take stock after thirteen years and re-evaluate the nature of the threat the country faces and its response to the atrocity of 9/11.” —New York Times Book Review   Ever since 9/11 America has fought an endless war on terror, seeking enemies everywhere and never promising peace. In Pay Any Price, Pulitzer Prize winner James Risen reveals an extraordinary litany of the hidden costs of that war: billions of dollars that went missing from Iraq only to turn up in a bunker in Lebanon; whistleblowers abused, including a staffer on the House Intelligence Committee persecuted by the F.B.I. for expressing her concerns about the NSA spying on U.S. citizens; and an entire professional organization, the American Psychological Association, forced to investigate its own involvement with the government’s use of torture. In the name of fighting terrorism, our government has perpetrated acts that rival the shameful historic wartime abuses of generations past, and it has worked very hard to cover them up. James Risen brings them into the light.  “[Pay Any Price is] a wide-ranging look at consequences of the so-called war on terror and includes stories of shocking thievery during the U.S. occupation of Iraq.” —U.S. News & World Report   “A no-holds-barred tarring and feathering of the past thirteen years of the U.S. national security system. At times frightening, Risen’s book is a strong reminder of the importance of a free press keeping a powerful government in check.” —Daily Beast

Pay Any Price: Greed, Power, and Endless War, by James Risen

Review "Risen’s fast-paced, accessible prose and his finely drawn detail make the book read like an implausible thriller. The tragedy is that, however implausible, it all appears to be true . . . enormously impressive. . . . This is an important and powerful book that should be read by anyone who believes it is time to take stock after 13 years and re-evaluate the nature of the threat the country faces and its response to the atrocity of 9/11." —New York Times Book Review "At long last we can retire Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein as the icons of investigative reporting. With his second book probing the dark tunnels of the so-called war on terror, James Risen has established himself as the finest national security reporter of this generation, a field crowded with first rank talent." —Newsweek "A memorable chronicle of the long-range consequences of the panicky reaction of top American officials to the Sept. 11 attacks...Mr. Risen certainly makes the case in this book that America has lost much in its lashing out against terrorism, and that Congress and the people need to wake up and ask more questions about the political, financial, moral and cultural costs of that campaign." —Tom Ricks, New York Times daily review

"A wide-ranging look at consequences of the so-called war on terror and includes stories of shocking thievery during the U.S. occupation of Iraq." —Steven Nelson, US News & World Report

"A no-holds-barred tarring and feathering of the past 13 years of the U.S. national security system. At times frightening, Risen’s book is a strong reminder of the importance of a free press keeping a powerful government in check." —William O’Connor, Daily Beast
