By Angela1007 I stumbled across this book while helping a friend do research yesterday for a thesis about the Iraq war and how it led to today's current situation with ISIS. I originally had no intent to read it--I was just looking up books for my friend. When I read the preface, it sounded interesting--a personal story from a deceased soldier--so I started to go through the preview pages. I suddenly realized that I couldn't stop reading it, and since it was only $5, I bought it. I'm glad I did. I've never been interested in the Iraq war--but now I am. I read the book in one sitting (it's only 80 pages). This is a true PERSONAL account like I've never heard--and although it's only one man's account, I personally feel that I began to see real insight and some truth about what happened over there that I've never seen on the news or in any literature I've seen about the war. It's very emotional and gripping.Even though this book was not intended to address what my friend was researching, I think it's going to add a tremendous amount to the direction of his research. And it was just a great story! Lots of grammar and spelling mistakes--but according to the publisher, it was intentionally published that way in order to preserve its authenticity. This is the most informative piece of writing I've ever read about the most recent American wars. And I think I can understand the vets a lot better, too. Those guys must have been torn between excitement and frustration every step of the way. The writer seems to have been a VERY interesting individual--or at least in a very interesting state of mind. At any rate, this little e-book got me excited enough to write about it. I see it only has one review so far--I hope more people will stumble across this one.

I'm a teacher and I'm giving serious thought about using this book in my class. Gives you a great look into what out guys went through. Would also recommend it as a guide to effective leadership.

This is more for Mamoru Oshii fans than Satoshi Kon ones By JC Writing a review for Seraphim is difficult, which I suspect is the reason why no one has written a review for it yet. On a technical scale, Seraphim is fantastic while on an entertainment level, it's mediocre at best. A perfect analogy for this graphical novel would be editor Carl Gustav Horn's 29-page essay on anime located in the back of the book. A 29-page essay on anime is impressive, but you're still reading an essay.At it's core, Seraphim is about two men and a Basset Hound accompanying a young girl to the "cordon sanitaire", a quarantined area where people have been infected with Seraphim, a disease that makes them lose their minds and grow wings from their backs. The story's main draw is the intriguing setup and answering the presenting mysteries including: why is this group going inside the cordon sanitaire, and just exactly who is this young girl?Unfortunately, story-wise Seraphim doesn't deliver very well. For the first twelve chapters, Mamoru Oshii retains more creative control, and this isn't a good thing. Oshii has a distinctive style of focusing on symbolism and cinematic angles rather than story. While I found them to be great in his movies (Ghost in the Shell, Skycrawlers, Patlabor), it's not so enjoyable here. The beginning contains so much symbolism on Christianity it almost feels as if Seraphim is smacking your face with a bible. The narrative suffers from odd choices too, including the use of two different flashback sequences after eight pages of prologue. For me, I felt dazed, not understanding what was going on nor comprehending the political undertones until around 60 pages in. The feeling that things are happening, but you don't really know what they are persists for 12 chapters. After that, Satoshi Kon's style comes into play and the pacing issues become a lot better, although it's too little too late as Seraphim only contains 16 chapters and ends prematurely without giving the final fates for any of the characters.Despite these enormous flaws, I still feel compelled (after a lot of deliberation) to give Seraphim five stars. I believe that ratings should depend on what the manga was trying to accomplish and how well it's done that. Seraphim more than anything, is trying to present this idea of rebirth after collapse using the dichotomy between physical destruction and institutional ones. Oshii uses this for an unconventional plot twist that did blow my mind, but only after I finished reading and spent some time thinking about what exactly I had read. The art is nothing short of spectacular with attention to detail including crumbling buildings and use of fantastical sequences like the main characters standing on a field of skeletons of the infected - wings and all. The use of a political thriller environment feels authentic and sets the mood. Seraphim is through and through a Mamoru Oshii work.Dark Horse has done a really amazing job with Seraphim and all their other works (including Opus and Domu), which is why I think they're the best people in the business. The translation is impeccable, which is particularly impressive given the difficult political dialogue. Extras include a two-page color poster, concept art, and a long essay going into the history of Seraphim's production, Oshii, Kon, Animage, and the manga industry among other things. There is a lot of love that went into the creation of Seraphim that will not be lost upon the readers.For those of you wondering "should I get this?", I have a few suggestions. If you came upon this because you're ONLY a Satoshi Kon fan, I'd personally wouldn't get Seraphim and instead would get the much superior title, Opus. For those that can appreciate Mamoru Oshii, this is definitely a solid title even without the story being officially concluded. From a symbolical point of view, Oshii accomplished all that he needed to, which is why I believe he was okay with leaving it as it is. If you're the type of person that enjoys looking at the deeper meaning behind things, I heartily recommend Seraphim: 266613336 Wings.

Glass If an elderly European, a Japanese military leader, and a dog have the names of the 3 Wise Men as their call signs, what does that make the Chinese girl [the sole survivor of her village] whom they protect? The depth and beauty of this world created by this duo of anime and manga masters opens up with the accompanying afterwords by the editor of its Japanese serialization [Takashi Watanabe] and its English edition [Carl Gustav Horn]. Mamoru Oshii and Satoshi Kon collaborated on the art and story of SERAPHIM. The characters are strong with many layers of mystery. Unfortunately this story, like Dickens' THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD, is left incomplete due to death. Enjoy immersing yourself in the art and story telling of SERAPHIM: 26661336 WINGS, figure out its foreshadowing, and speculate about what has been left unsaid as to the truth of the "plague" and the interactions of the diverse characters on their quest for truth. Be thankful for what actually reached print and do not mourn its eventual reader's interruptus.

200 of 209 people found the following review helpful. Caution, this is an abridgement. By Joseph W. Trigg I bought this version when I could not find my old copy. On trying to find a favorite passage (Darwin's revulsion at a parasitic wasp in Brazil and the inconsistency of such cruelty with any providential design of nature by a good God), I noticed that it was not there. I do not know what else is missing. I find it infuriating that this was not adequately noted on the cover of the book. I always prefer books as the author wrote them, especially when the author is Darwin. This is a lively, beautiful and haunting work that I first read when I was thirteen and have read twice since. Readers deserve the whole thing.

Charles Darwin as Indiana Jones By Vincent Poirier We all know Charles Darwin as a scholarly bearded old English gentleman, and like Leonardo da Vinci, Darwin has this image defining him for all future generations. Even though most everyone knows Darwin spent five years traveling the oceans on the HMS Beagle, the image of a young dynamic Darwin never takes over. Reading this book will change this.Darwin sailed on the Beagle, a small three-mast sailing ship, and circumnavigated the globe. Over five years, he visited numerous islands in the Atlantic and Pacific and extensively surveyed the east and west coasts of South America. He hiked up and down mountains, traveled on horseback across the arid Argentinean plains, crossed the lonely Peruvian desert, and trekked the grandiose Chilean Cordilleras. He thought nothing of packing a train of mules for a two-month overland journey across the Andes going from Chile to Argentina and back again. On all his land expeditions he hired local guides, from Gauchos in Argentina to South Pacific islanders in Tahiti. Darwin's accounts of his expeditions are not only interesting adventures, they are also good portraits of the people he met. These include Latin American governors and generals, Argentinean ranchers, very primitive natives on Tierra del Fuego, and so on.The journal begins with an account of Cape de Verd islands, then most of the book is spent on Brazil, Argentina, and Chile, and we have to wait until Chapter 17 before we get to what all Darwin fans really want to read, namely the account of his visit to the Galapagos. Though short, the account does not disappoint. We read of Darwin's finches, of two allied species of lizards, and of the giant turtles. Darwin also presents his great insight: that geographical isolation contributes to speciation. He came by this insight when it was pointed out to him that nearly identical species were seldom found on the same island. Another insight was that the fauna and flora an island depends more on that of the nearby mainland than on latitude. For example the plants of the Galapagos Islands were similar to those of the American west coast, while those of Cape de Verd, at the same latitude but in the Atlantic, resembled plants found in Africa. Darwin then continues with accounts of Tahiti, New Zealand and Australia, where we read how he thought coral reef islands were formed.In the last chapter Darwin tells us of his visit to St-Helena and he does in fact mention its most famous resident, Napoleon Bonaparte. Though the French Emperor had already died, his remains had not yet been moved to Les Invalides in Paris. Darwin writes of the grave only in passing and is explicitly careful not too make too much of it. Apparently visitors in those days had a habit of overdoing their descriptions of Napoleon's rather simple headstone.Travel notes like these and the descriptions of the people he met, were for me the most charming aspect of the book. The portraits Darwin paints are invariably sympathetic to human nature. Certainly Darwin was a man of his times and valued civilization very highly, but he was no racist and believed that all men could find happiness and enlightenment, and that all men had a right to be free. He despised slavery, and wrote eloquent passages attacking the prevalent institution. From this journal, we come to know a dynamic, adventurous young man, and a thoughtful liberal one who would only later shake our view of our place in the world.

Cliffe The 1 star is for Penguin, because the cover does not warn you that the content has been sharply abridged. Darwin's thinking and writing are wonderful -- but grossly and unfairly cut to ribbons.

With careful historical research, Pat McNeely links those stories to unravel one of the most fascinating mysteries of the war: What became of the gold taken from the Confederate treasury in the last days of the conflict?McNeely weaves together the stories behind Lincoln's assassination, Jefferson Davis' cross-country flight, and the "weary thirty days" of Captain William Parker, whose naval midshipmen guarded the loot, a train full of gold and silver trying to cross country where the rail lines had been destroyed.Was General Sherman bribed to allow Davis to escape? There's no proof of bribery, but much proof of miscommunication. By Daniel Kauwe To me this series is like the classic treasure/adventure stories from decades past (particularly Indiana Jones), and so I really enjoy a plot line that doesn't seem to be very common among web comics today (at least for those I've seen thus far). There are lots of interesting characters, sci-fi elements, mysteries, conflict, etc etc. I look forward to future volumes!
