Pansy, by Andrea Gibson

Review “Her work is deeply haunting and profoundly inspiring. To call her one of the best poets would be a gross understatement. She is a far artist who forever changes those who experience her poems.” -- Carlos Andrés Gómez

About the Author Andrea Gibson is not gentle with her truths. It is this raw fearlessness that has led her to the forefront of the spoken word movement– the first winner of the Women’s World Poetry Slam –Gibson has headlined prestigious performance venues coast to coast with powerful readings on war, class, gender, bullying, white privilege, sexuality, love, and spirituality. Her work has been featured on the BBC, Air America, C-SPAN, Free Speech TV and in 2010 was read by a state representative in lieu of morning prayer at the Utah State Legislature.

To the Men Cat-Calling my Girlfriend While I’m Walking Beside Her One of the biggest perks to looking the way I do is that I virtually never have to listen to someone like you suck your own dick, out loud, while telling yourself I am what you’re swallowing. How do you not know when you open your mouth like that women imagine you would use your mugshot as your Ok Cupid photo? Fail. Fail is what you do every time you think you can ace manhood without ever showing up to class. I mean class as in decency, as in common courtesy, as in the opposite of Let me get a look at that ass, Baby Doll! Congratulations on being another dude who bought his catcalls from Toys R Us. You unoriginal hand-me-down of mediocrity. You mosquito biting your own balls in a swamp of your mother’s regret. Yes, I know it’s low to call even assholes names. But any feminist who has ever taken the high road will tell you the highroad gets backed up, and sometimes we need to take a detour straight through the belly of uncensored rage. Sometimes we get tired of seeing people’s humanity, when they are outright refusing to show us their humanity. And so far all you've shown me is that your voice box is a Rubix Cube you couldn’t get right, even if you peeled the fucking stickers off. I don’t think you could get all sides clear on why you do not own the air. Or why not everyone takes a bullet as a compliment. And yes, even Hey baby can spiral like a bullet if it is aimed at someone who is not, in fact, your baby. If women have to play dead to walk by your doorstep, you might want to do some work on why a casket turns you on. On why her flinch and startle makes you think you are in charge more than it makes you realize you own power outage. This city is dark with men blowing themselves out. Men burying their own spines in the weight of what they think is theirs to take to own to muzzle to drag into the ditch. This city is dark with men hiding their own hearts like bloody gloves. You wanna know what I know about my love? About femme? I know you do not know how lucky you are that I am not someone you would ever shout your dick at. 'Cause I promise you do not want to see how that woman would have my back if you even blinked at me. If you even squinted in the direction of the sun 93 million miles behind me.

Andrea Gibson is a talented artist and never fails to impress with her words. We had the pleasure of seeing her live once and while the book does that no justice, her spoken word poems written down like this are a MUST for any fan (or anyone at all).Very inspiring, a little sassy, and always ALWAYS raw, emotional, and touching. We LOVE Andrea Gibson!

I have had the pleasure of being in her audience twice, I have two of her CD's and I've done a workshop with her, and she never disappoints. This book is raw and heartbreakingly beautiful. It is a must read. She covers a variety of topics while admitting that she isn't perfect either.

The race to reach the South Pole for the first time was an unparalleled adventure in the early twentieth century. South, by historian Hunter Stewart, chronicles the competition between two fierce rivals - Robert F. Scott and Roald Amundsen - to secure their place in history as the first man to lead an expedition to the most uninhabitable place on earth. South dramatically tells the story of the quest that is marked by heartbreak, greed, ego, and bravery - not only by Scott and Amundsen but by the courageous crews and financial backers who supported them. The journey to reach the South Pole was truly, as it was later called, "The Heroic Age of Arctic Exploration."

By Thom Erb There's no big secret that I'm a life-long lover of comic books and the apocalypse. And when I read the NUKE Brothers, I was reminded why I really dig independent comic creators. The well-paces writing, that gave you just enough information to keep you turning the page melded perfectly with the nearly impressionist-inspired illustration. Two Erbal thumbs up and I'm looking forward to the next installment.

The previously untold story of an extraordinary man and a great war photographer.Cameras were banned at the Western Front when the Anzacs arrived in 1916, prompting correspondent Charles Bean to argue continually for Australia to have a dedicated photographer. He was eventually assigned an enigmatic polar explorer - George Hubert Wilkins.Within weeks of arriving at the front, Wilkins' exploits were legendary. He did what no photographer had previously dared to do. He went 'over the top' with the troops and ran forward to photograph the actual fighting. He led soldiers into battle, captured German prisoners, was wounded repeatedly, and was twice awarded the Military Cross - all while he refused to carry a gun and armed himself only with a bulky glass-plate camera.Wilkins ultimately produced the most detailed and accurate collection of World War I photographs in the world, which is now held at the Australian War Memorial. After the war, Wilkins returned to exploring and, during the next 40 years, his life became shrouded in secrecy. His work at the Western Front was forgotten, and others claimed credit for his photographs.Throughout his life, Wilkins wrote detailed diaries and letters, but when he died in 1958 these documents were locked away. Jeff Maynard follows a trail of myth and misinformation to locate Wilkins' lost records and to reveal the remarkable, true story of Australia's greatest war photographer.

Review '[A] thrilling, wonderfully researched book. Every Australian should read it. Almost every page leaves you astonished.';- Tony Wright, The Saturday Age;;'[This] understated, well-honed biography reveals the maverick, eternally restless Wilkins as a man who refused to define his life through war alone.';- The Saturday Paper;;'George Hubert Wilkins is not a name which everybody knows [but] it should be. As a collection of ripping yarns The Unseen Anzac would be hard to beat, and it's extraordinary that Wilkins has dropped out of the public consciousness.';- Nick Goldie, Cooma-Monaro Express;;'Hubert Wilkins was one of the most extraordinary individuals Australia has produced ... Maynard is a great explorer too, tracking down long-forgotten letters and diaries ... A great ride.';- Sunday Territorian

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A valuable work for war historians By Saskia Raevouri Australian George Hubert Wilkins (or Sir Hubert Wilkins, as he was later known), was one of the twentieth century's most multifaceted yet underrated heroes. Before he gained international renown in the late 1920s for his pioneering flights in the Arctic, he had traveled the world as engineer, photographer, cinematographer, reporter, war correspondent, geographer, balloonist, polar explorer, secret agent, and naturalist. Because many documents relating to his life were missing until recently, we have only had sketchy and incomplete knowledge of the actual role Wilkins played in many of his missions. It is Wilkins' largely forgotten role as a World War I photographer, assigned to cover the Anzacs in battle as a member of the Australian War History Team, that author Jeff Maynard has uncovered important primary documents that set the record straight. In 2014 Maynard was granted access to 15 boxes of Wilkins correspondence and other memorabilia held in a barn in Michigan, USA, by a Wilkins heir after a decades-earlier ownership dispute. (The material has since joined the bulk of Wilkins' papers at Ohio State University.) Here Maynard discovered detailed letters from Wilkins to his mother from the Western Front as well as Wilkins' personal copy of Volume XII of "The Official History of Australia in the War of 1914-1918" in which he had initialed the photos he took -- images heretofore credited to an "unknown official war photographer."In this book Maynard captures the spirit of the daring George Wilkins who, armed only with a camera, ventured into the front lines to get the most accurate shots, assisting the troops in battle and earning two Military Crosses in the process. Maynard's painstaking research, matching and identifying battle scenes based on first-person accounts with the numbered photographs, has resulted in a valuable work for war historians as well as for those studying of the life of Sir George Hubert Wilkins.

Fascinating Account of an Extraordinary Life By Lynette McClenaghan In the proliferation of books about the Great War, the role of the camera and photographers is merely accepted as a given – men were there and photographs. This book examines the crucial role of George Wilkins as a photographer, not only in terms of the photographic record, but of the significance of those photographs in helping to create a sense of national identity in Australia. The book provides links and contextualizing comments to the online record of the images. The author interweaves this important historical and technological discussion with the biographical account of George Wilkins. He was an extraordinary man and his character emerges clearly and strongly throughout. His bravery and determination to record the Australian soldiers’ contribution to the war, lead to his being involved at the forefront of the fighting and the book is filled with stories of his escapades and exploits. This is heart in the mouth adventure, all the more moving because it was real.Wilkins’ story is in itself fascinating, but the way in which the book examines the role of war photographer was for me, its most important element. To give just one example: Australia’s war correspondent and historian Charles Bean insisted on photographs which truthfully recorded events; photographer Frank Hurley wanted to create composites of more than one photograph to make the images more artistic. Decades before photoshopping here is a debate over veracity in creating images and the purposes to which those images are put. This book provides action and adventure but also important ideas such as national identity, censorship, class divisions and historical research. A very rewarding read.

What a remarkable and inspirational women. You hear people complain about a lack of opportunities today because they sit and wait for things to happen while the Annies of the world get up off their duff and make it happen. This really was inspirational!
