About the Author Brian Michael Bendis (born August 18, 1967) is an American comic book writer and former artist. He has won critical acclaim, including five Eisner Awards for both his creator-owned work and his work on various Marvel Comics books. Starting out with crime and noir comics, Bendis eventually moved to mainstream superhero work. With Bill Jemas and Mark Millar, Bendis was the primary architect of the Ultimate Marvel Universe, launching Ultimate Spider-Man in 2000, on which he continues as writer to the present day. He relaunched the Avengers franchise with New Avengers in 2004, and has also written the Marvel "event" storylines "Secret War" (2004), "House of M" (2005), "Secret Invasion" (2008), "Siege" (2010) and "Age of Ultron" (2013).In addition to writing comics, he has also worked in television, video games and film, and taught writing at Portland State University. Filling plot holes, but nothing all that great By Ben Martin If you want to know what this story is all about, you'd be well served to read the earlier GotG run by Abnett and Lanning before diving in here, as this finally explains why Star-Lord, Thanos and Drax are not dead like they were at the end of that run. That part of the story comprises about the first half of this volume, and was at least a somewhat satisfactory answer to why Bendis brought back who he did for this team. It really should have happened before this though.The second half of this has the Venom symbiote jumping from one character to the next, which got old after a while. Groot, Rocket, Drax ... ok we get it, We do get our first look at where the symbiote came from for the first time (that I know of), which was probably long overdue.Overall, not too impressed with this story, though it is worth reading if you're fans of this team.

13 of 19 people found the following review helpful. An insult to Marvel's rich cosmic history By Zero I'm no fan of Brian Michael Bendis, barring his Daredevil run. His name on a title is enough to repel me from a book. However, I'm also a tremendous fan of the Annihilation Era of cosmic comics written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. I believe it to be one of the greatest comic sagas written in recent memory and it cemented Nova (Richard Rider) as my favorite hero of all time. For this reason I gave the first few issues of Bendis' GotG a shot, but dropped it after #3. It simply wasn't my cup of tea. Regardless, seeing that the fate of Richard Rider was supposedly going to be addressed got me to read this. In retrospect, I wish I hadn't. I went in with low expectations but one can hope for the best.The story collected is actually two smaller arcs. The first is a tie-in for the Original Sin event but is far more relevant to the past story The Thanos Imperative. Those who haven't read it likely won't get much from this part other than some decent, albeit pointless, action. They'll be much better off in the long run because, to those familiar with Thanos Imperative, it quickly becomes apparent this story is grossly inconsistent with past events, to the point that every major plot point is reversed or ignored. One gets the impression Bendis never even bothered to read Thanos Imperative which is a problem when you're writing the immediate aftermath and addressing why characters who should be dead are alive. Being inconsistent with past stories is irksome enough but it's even worse when a story isn't even consistent with itself. For example, if you establish that characters can't die in an alternate universe, it makes no sense for the heroes to be worried about dying. Never mind the bleak recounting of events is sprinkled with more of that cheeky Bendis brand banter. To top it off, the whole thing ends with an ambiguous non-resolution about Richard's ultimate fate, leaving Nova fans no better off then they were before while simultaneously cheapening the heroic sacrifice he and Starlord made to conclude a great series of cosmic stories.The second arc collected here is all about the team getting to a symbiote planet after Gent Venom starts acting srangly. It's a an interesting enough premise but the execution is sorely lacking. What could have been an intriguing look into the source of the Venom symbiote instead turns into little more than two issues of fluff where the cast plays musical chairs wearing the symbiote, trying to catch it and ultimately coming to a nice and simple conclusion that had no real build up, climax or dramatic tension. Worse still, to facilitate the ending, Bendis drops a multi-page info drop that effectively retcons the Venom symbiote, reducing it from a monstrous parasite and sometimes metaphor into something so cheesy, so hackneyed that it beggars belief. I'm not even sure why the change was made.Insofar as the art, it's a mixed bag to me. Ed McGuinness did art for most of the Original Sin issue with help from Valerio Schiti in #20. McGuinness is decent in my opinion and he conveyed action well enough in his work here, but I feel his art needs to be paired with the right kind of book and his more toony aesthetic seemed at odds with the somber tone of these issues. It also seems inconsistent at times. Keep your eye on evil Cap's shield for a great example. Speaking of inconsistent, I always hate artist changes in the middle of an issue if not a story arc. It really takes me out of the book for a bit. Shiti's art is a better fit in my opinion but it didn't really leave much of an impression on me one way or the other.As a writer, Bendis has bad tendencies that rub me the wrong way. The worst ones are is often flagrant disregard for canon, established characterization, and continuity. His repertoire of characters feels very limited and, when he tackles established ones for the first time, he often seems to throw out established history and characterization so he can force these people into archetypes he's more comfortable with, often making them more shallow in the process. This is especially bad in team books when dialogue is full of quips and everybody can start sounding the same. That's why I dropped this Guardians run the first time. I loved the Abnett and Lanning run. I loved those characters and these simply aren't my characters. They may as well be brand new. And for what? So these sorry facsimiles can just meander without direction, engaging in mundane shenanigans rather than the greater ideas that came before? This collection in particular exemplifies Bendis' bad tendencies at their absolute worst. For the average reader, it's just lousy material. For fans of Nova, the Annihilation Era, and perhaps even Venom, a slap in the face. Either through incompetence or apathy or maybe a little of both, Marvel's fantastic cosmic landscape appears to have been demolished.

By Matt Anderson Collects Guardians of the Galaxy (2013) issues #18-23This is a fun group of heroes to read about, and Brian Michael Bendis continues to impress me with his writing abilities.I'll get my very minor complaint out of the way first because overall this is a great book. This title, like many other Marvel titles, had to do a tie-in to the 2014 event, "Original Sin." However, because the Guardians are in space, and weren't impacted by the Truth Bomb, Bendis had to manufacture an incident in which Gamora finally decides she wants the truth on something. The thing she wants to know about is how did Star Lord, Richard Rider (Nova), and Thanos escape the Cancerverse. Now, here's my complaint...this story with the Cancerverse happened prior to Bendis' run on "Guardians of the Galaxy." As a new reader, I didn't know anything about the Cancerverse story, or really care how things got resolved there. I suppose for someone really following Marvel continuity it was good to bring resolution to that apparent mystery, but for me personally, I could not have cared less.With that being said, Bendis managed to make the story relatively interesting, even though I would have still rather he skipped it.The part of this book that I really liked had to do with Venom's symbiote.SPOILERS:I don't know if this has happened in Marvel Comics before, but Bendis took us to the symbiotes' home-world. Their race is known as the Klyntar. They aren't evil! They just need to be joined with a proper host, or else the symbiote gets corrupted. This makes sense, but also retcons all past symbiote stories.

By Book Spots and Thoughts Casey Clipper's third installment of the Love Series does not disappoint. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this story had a different spin to the traditional HEA story, which was perfect, considering Derk, the main character in this story, is anything but traditional.Derk Forester is dark, he's dangerous and he's definitely not the kind of guy that Mackenzie wants or needs in her already complicated life. Fresh off a bad divorce which left her with absolutely nothing, all she wants is to earn enough money to start a new life for herself. But one aggressively stolen kiss from Derk spins her life in a completely different direction. He works for the mob. He loves them and leaves them. He doesn't look back. He takes what he wants. And he wants Mackenzie. Only problem is, Mackenzie isn't betting on Derk to give her what she needs. Mackenzie isn't willing to put her heart on the line again for someone she knows is everything his reputation has earned him. During Derk's chase for Mackenzie, some of our favorite characters from Silent Love and Unexpected Love are blended into the story, giving us an update of how their lives have progressed as well. An unconventional love story, with a non-traditional ending is what makes this a uniquely enjoyable read.

Everyone from the first 2 books is back in Book 3 but the story focuses on Derk Forester, Derrick Murphy's henchman.Mackenzie grew up in foster care and never knew what love was. She married the first man to show an interest in her. Trouble was, he didn't really love her. In the divorce he got everything leaving Mackenzie with nothing. She is determined to get her life in order and to find love.When Derk sees Mackenzie, he wants her in his bed. No commitment, just sex until he has had enough and moves on. Problem is, Mackenzie won't settle for that. Derk comes on too crude, too bossy, and too arrogant-- typical Derk behavior. He realizes he needs to back off and start over with a different approach. Derk spends time with Mac and she gets under his skin. He begins to realize he wants Mac in his future. Mac isn't so sure she wants Derk in her life once she finds out what he does for a living. Derk sets out to change her mind.Once again, Casey Clipper has written an excellent book. She brings her characters to life as fully developed individuals-- warts and all. There were times I wanted to wring Derk's neck and slap him silly for being such a Neanderthal. Other times, I was touched by how he cared for Mac. How he wanted to prove to her how wonderful she was. How he wanted to bring her into the Murphy family so she could learn what it was like to have people who really cared for her and had her back. I liked Mac because she wasn't jealous of Derk's relationships with Courtney and Beth. She was secure in herself and in his feelings for her.Personally, I would have never thought I would care for people in the mob. Especially one with Derk's "talents". In Casey's hands, these characters are likeable. That speaks volumes about her talent.I've read all 3 books in this series. I loved all of them. I am impatiently awaiting Book 4! I highly recommend the entire Love Series to anyone wanting to read a terrific, highly entertaining story. Derrick Murphy insists on it!

By Leeann Wright Meet Derk Forester.. he is the ultimate bad boy.He lives hard and he plays hard. Break them in and move along is his motto. The more innocent the more he enjoys it.Mackenzie Hiland is at rock bottom. She has just divorced her cheating husband and walked away with nothing more than the clothes on her back.Their first meeting is like nothing Mackenzie has ever experienced and it sets the tone for their relationship.Derk is upfront with Mackenzie about everything except his job. When she finds out they face a huge hurdle. She needs to decide if she can live with it and he needs to decide if he can let her go.I have loved all the books in The Love Series but this is possibly my favourite so far. It is always exciting to Read about bad boys being brought to their knees.Casey Clipper has done a fabulous job bringing Derk and Mackenzie to life. The characters growth from the start of the story to the end is very easy to follow. I also love that all of the previous characters from the series are included In Derk and Mackenzies story as they are such a big part of Derk's life.Both Mackenzie and Derk are easy characters to like and empathize with. They face hurdles on their path to happy ever after, they have to work for it like any other couple in the world. This was an easy book to get lost in. I read it in one day as I was absolutely captivated by Derk and Mackenzie and their story.Love, love, loved it!

By Donnielle Tyner I am a big fan of graphic novels and usually stay within the superhero genre and don't really read many science fiction graphic novels. My preference is such because science fiction GN tend to be a little overly complicated and confusing. Sevara started off that way, but once I pushed through I really started to enjoy the story.Mr. Wampler is an imaginative story-teller. I absolutely loved the prequel novel that gives more background to Sevara and when Damian approached me to review the GN, I wholeheartedly agreed.When the novel arrived, I was first and foremost blown away by the art. It is beautifully done and brought to life Sevara's character and her powers.Once I started reading it, I struggled for a while to understand what exactly was going on, but well into chapter two, I caught on, but still had one issue. For me, there wasn't any significant break when the story jumped from past to present. In the first chapter, the story jumps back to a scene in the Sevara: Dawn of Hope novel. The colors were dulled in that panel compared to the other and I thought it brilliant that they would differentiate the past in such a way, but later in the story they jumped back again to a storyline in Sevara: Dawn of Hope without any noticeable change. If I hadn't read the novel first, I don't think I would have understood the reference.Other than that, the story in this GN is on point and I just love how Mr. Wampler's mind works. The cultural parallels are brilliant and the religious aspects are thought-inducing.I would absolutely recommend this graphic novel, but I would highly suggest reading Sevara: Dawn of Hope first. (Oh and definitely check out the extras in the back - that timeline really brought the story into perspective)

It's magnificent. I fell in love the second I opened the book. (Although I'll never understand why women have to be so naked in comics)I wish the cover had been different because the cover doesn't do this justice. If I had seen this somewhere I wouldn't have picked this up. (I was sent the book to read)Now to the story.It's a little difficult to get through the first chapter but please do. Because it gets really GOOD. I found it a complex woven story that kind of grips you from the second chapter onwards. You find yourself horrified, thrilled, excited and eager to see where it goes.I must say the bonus section really helped me, a comic book newbie, see how much work goes into the creation process and made me appreciate it more. And the last section of writing? Wow. That's amazing. I want to know what happens after she says what she says. So exciting. Can't wait for the next instalment.

By Francesco Piaz For those who are interested in MidEast affairs (as myself) this covers a fascinating topic and is written in a fluid style, which adds up to a truly gripping read.The only reason for which I am not awarding this book 5 stars (and were it possible 6 or 7 stars) is the fact that many of the claims are indeed extreme...Too much of the book simply adds up to bill this as complete fiction. Several other books (amongst which "The Samson Option", written by a renown journalist) have been based on Ben-Menashe's knowledge. Investigations have sprung up in the US and in Australia. Of course, these haven't lead far, but this is a serious case of the poeple in power charged with investigating the people in power - so what would you really expect?Whilst I was reading this book I kept my copy of "Israels Secret Wars" at hand to verify events, facts and dates, and together with a bit of searching around the net, the essence of it all seems to add up.Right from the start the author makes his embitterment with the "system" clear, so accusing him of having an axe to grind is pretty lame - add to that the fact that amongst his sworn enemies (at the end) was the media mogul R. Maxwell (who unleashed the full weight of his media empire to destroy his credibility) and you end up without much of a case...****************************TO SUM IT UP: You have to be deeply cynical, but alas perhaps realistic, to accept all that is stated in this book. In the end, however, I am one who believes that where there's smoke, there's got to be some fire as well, and this book discloses a hell of a lot of smoke!

Truth is stranger than fiction By mysterioustraveller I have been investigating this book for about ten years now and my conclusion is that A B-M was telling what he knew.Any errors are due to his not being aware of certain things, like the details relating to certain Arab regimes etc.But in general A B-M had no reason to make up this stuff, which even a seasoned fiction writer could not have delineated with so much sharp detail.The various establishments that have tried to discredit him have in fact discredited themselves, amongst them are Newsweek magazine, the White House reporter Steven Emerson and various Wikipedia aministrators that are employed by AIPAC.

I am surprised that this is even a debate anymore in the history books. This book was published in 1992 by Ari Ben-Menashe, a former Israeli intelligence agent. The relevant Iranians are on the record too about this agreement; read Bani-Sadr's book. And then there is Barabara Honneger's October Surprise and also Gary Sick's book on this topic.It looks like both William Casey, the Reagan campaign manager who would become CIA chief and GHW Bush, the CIA chief from 1976 (after being a longtime CIA asset) both dirtied their hands in the treasonous deal with the Iranians.I live in Austin, TX and in 2009 I interviewed Bobby Ray Inman, "Mr. Intelligence," who in the 1980's was the #2 man a the CIA under William Casey. Inman told me in a 2009 interview that he had "no doubt" that the Republicans had made a deal with the Iranians to not release the American hostages until after the 1980 general election. That is what Inman told me: completely convinced a deal had been made.Roger Stone worked for the 1980 Reagan campaign. He, likewise, says that William Casey was meeting with some strange, Middle Eastern people at the Reagan HQs and Stone says there was definitely something going on - hush hush meetings with these characters.Basically, the "October Surprise" dealings of the 1980 Reagan campaign has been confirmed from all corners. It happened. Needs to move from "conspiracy theory" to the fact category.Read Chapters 4 (The Groundwork) and Chapter 5 (The Agreement) in this book to get an understanding of this deal as seen from the Israeli point of view.Therefore, this book is a must buy and a must read for historians, journalists and people who like to learn about modern American history and politics.Politics is played very dirty at the highest levels and the MSM and the court historians of academia often censor or deny what really happened.This book is the real skinny on what happened.
