THE WELL-DRESSED APE, aka Homo sapiens, is a strange mammal. It thinks of itself as complex, intelligent, and in every way superior to other animals – but is it, really? With wit, humility, and penetrating insight, science journalist Hannah Holmes casts the inquisitive eye of a trained researcher and reporter on...herself. And not just on herself, but on our whole species – what Shakespeare called “the paragon of animals.” In this surprising, humorous, and edifying audio, Holmes explores how the human animal fits into the natural world, even as we humans change that world in both constructive and destructive ways. Comparing and contrasting the biology and behavior of humans with that of other creatures, Holmes demonstrates our position as an animal among other animals, a product of – and subject to – the same evolutionary processes. And not only are we animals – we are, in some important ways (such as our senses of smell and of vision), pitiably inferior ones. That such an animal came to exist at all is unlikely. That we have survived and prospered is extraordinary. At the same time, Holmes reveals the ways in which Homo sapiens stands apart from other animals. Despite the vast common ground we share with our fellow creatures, there are significant areas in which we are unique ― our capacity for self-reflective thought and our talent for changing ourselves in response to natural challenges. Deftly mixing personal stories and observations with the latest scientific theories and research results, Hannah Holmes has fashioned an engaging and informative field guide to that oddest and yet most fascinating of primates: ourselves.

The Well-Dressed Ape: A Natural History of Myself, by Hannah Holmes

From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Holmes (Suburban Safari) has been uncomfortable with the notion that I was an animal apart, a sort of extraterrestrial on my own planet. Hence, she examines her animal self, hoping to clarify my identity in the natural world. As in her previous works, she uses the mundane to make larger points about life and the human condition. Beginning each chapter in a scientific mode, she then glides into more personal reflections (I'm most aware of my brain when I encounter its limitations) and then compares humans with other animals: My wad of wiring is so hot and bothered that it puts all the world's other brains to shame. Or does it? Holmes thus continually underscores that humans are not nearly as different as many would have us believe. For example, a surprising number of species communicate fairly well, and prairie dogs actually have a sizable vocabulary. Holmes's optimistic conclusion is that we are the only species capable of thinking about the effect of our actions and acting against narrow self-interest, even if we don't always do so. Holmes makes the scientific personal in prose that is juicy and humorous, if occasionally a bit too cute. (Jan. 20) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist “Who are we, animally speaking?” asks Holmes in this engaging look at Homo sapiens that uses the same cool objectivity scientists employ in viewing other species. In fact, she begins each chapter with the kind of fact sheet used by biologists to classify species, then adds delightful details based on scientific research and observations of her own body and her husband’s. Comparing the human body with other animals, she notes the pros and cons: the scarcity of body fur, the length and straightness of limbs, teeth and claws unsuitable for hunting or defense, merely adequate eyesight, but an amazing brain and social abilities that greatly compensate for physical shortcomings. Deeply informed but whimsical, Holmes examines how—and maybe why—we have evolved the way we have and the myriad differences between the sexes of our species and others. She also examines the impact of culture on our species, from painting ourselves and altering our fur (or hair) to how our diet contributes to greater height from one generation to the next. Holmes brings fresh eyes to her look at our old species. --Vanessa Bush

TWDA is basically a field guide to the human animal. We are amazing, highly domesticated animals, of course, with huge brains and the unique ability to both regret the past and project the future--but so much ELSE of what we are results from a ferocious life wish, i.e., biological survival. This book is packed with astonishing revelations about why and how we mate, how we perceive the world around us(many male/female differences there), the meaning of our long life spans, the implications of physical quirks such as extra-long index fingers, and countless other facts the author has gleaned from observation, study, and voluminous reading. There's a jewel on every page, and the author herself is a jewel, too, like the brainiest, funniest, friendliest teacher you had back in high school.

A field guide to the human animal By Lynn Harnett Surrounded by our electrified homes and cities, our space programs and wars, music and art, it's pretty easy to forget we are animals, no more unique than any other on the planet.Science writer Holmes ("Suburban Safari," "The Secret Life of Dust") sets out to remedy this, structuring her entertaining and edifying book around a field-guide fact sheet for the human animal: physical description, perception, range, diet, reproduction, predators, etc.She opens each chapter with a close examination of the species sample -- herself. Measuring herself and her genetic legacy against the range for her species, she segues into gender and cultural differences and then embarks on comparisons with other creatures. She looks at the advantages our various physical peculiarities confer, and the price we pay. Running, for instance. We may not be the fastest animal, but few creatures can match our stamina. Researchers have come up with 26 anatomical features that make us "the running ape," including a neck untethered from the shoulders and muscles that prevent the head from bouncing, as well as our "zillions" of sweat glands and springy tendons. We pay for this exceptional ability with back pain and wonky knees. While the biological examination gives us much to admire, the social aspects of the human animal are particularly entertaining, from altruism (usually for selfish motives) to aggression to the benefits of cheating on a mate.Studies of birds, prairie dogs and fruit flies have shown the fruit of promiscuity to be more robust. And, "A fascinating study of birds' brain sizes and cheating rates concluded that those species with the cheaten'ist females are also the species with the brainiest females, presumably because those females who can outwit males raise the most fit broods."Reproduction, as always, provides tons of fun. From the sticky issue of monogamy to the factors in choosing a mate and the reasons for anytime receptivity, Holmes enthusiastically explores the chemistry, evolutionary advantages and theories surrounding an activity that few other creatures regard as fun (dolphins and bonobos excepted). And then there are the factoids. Political ideology, for instance, is largely hard-wired into our genetics. Most people will tell three lies in 10 minutes while killing time in a waiting room. And people have an easier time reading emotions on the left side of the face. Many of the many studies Holmes cites (she even includes dubious studies -- and usually cites the problems) will be familiar to those who savor popular science books as a regular part of the reading diet. Some will be new. But it hardly matters. Holmes' approach is so novel, thorough and entertaining, anyone who's at all interested in the human animal -- where it came from and where it's going (yikes!) -- will find the book fascinating.

Great Exploration of Superman and Those Closest to Him By Andrew Searles To start this off, this is a very long arc, the book is roughly the size of 3 maybe 3.5 new 52 volumes (almost all of Superman/Wonder Woman vol 2 is in this book). The story is very interesting, it really addresses the question, what would the world do if Superman got out of control. This story has plenty of twists and turns so each chapter of the arc is fresh and different. The use of supporting characters is done pretty well, Wonder Woman is certainly the second most important character here, and the writers (Soule especially) made a good balance of making her a worrier and concerned for her boyfriend. At first you'll get hit with a lot of new characters (if you aren't completely caught up on Superman and Action Comics like I am), they fit very well into the story and the confusion should clear up right away. One of my favorite things about this book has been the exploration of Superman's mind, he has a LOT of internal dialog with an imagined version of doomsday. The two discuss a lot of the critiques fans have about Superman (ex. his only plan is usually punch everything, his refusal to kill, his sense of dedication to Earth even though he might destroy it, etc.) I found that incredibly interesting, I also loved the exploration of Clark and Diana's relationship, you really start to see how Clark feels, while up until this point we've only really seen Diana put how she feels into words. The only things I didn't really like were the Supergirl chapters, her stories almost seemed useless, they had nothing to do with Clark, and she suddenly stopped being a Red Lantern halfway though, with no explanation. Aside from that, and a few pages of questionable art I really liked this story.Recommended for people who like: Doomsday, Superman/Wonder Woman and their relationship, Superman getting critiqued and questioned, and Superman having to rely on others for help

A Creative, entertaining story, but suffers from artistic and storyline inconsistencies By Stuart S As this is such a long, time-consuming read, a longer review is justified, so please bear with me. When Superman was introduced to Doomsday all those years ago, the character of the Man of Steel changed forever. Lex Luther, Braniac, Toy Man, Metallo, and other members of Superman's enemies certainly came close to bringing down the Man of Steel, but it was not until Doomsday arrived that Superman finally perished. So how can Doomed top this event without being just another rehash? Only with creative and inventive writing, which this collection does in spades.Firstly, as an event book that is a crossover story, it pulls from several titles, along with the various talents that inhabit said titles. The art, as a result, is a sampling of many talents, which is both a blessing and a curse. As this book is nearly 500 pages long, it would be fairly unrealistic to expect a single artist to handle such a project. So faulting the artistic diversity is just plain ridiculous and unfair. However, it does present glaring levels of quality disparity. Daniel's work is largely satisfying, and I would argue his work may be the strongest contribution, although Benes certainly demonstrates skill. The Kuder art is, I believe, the most prevalent, which is not necessarily the best. While he depicts the Superman/doomsday hybrid well, his depiction of 'normal' looking people is a little strange. I don't mind the cartoonish style in general, it is very much less detailed but also allows for quicker reading, but Kuder's work bugs me. His faces, for example, depict the human mouth as a gaping maw that looks like it is being put through a wind tunnel. Because of the simplistic nature of his work, some characters look indistinguishable from each other, with Lana Lang looking like a teenage boy from certain angles. Perhaps the most distracting thing about several artists contributing to the same story is the preferred style a character is drawn. As The New 52 brought more complex costumes as the standard, characters have been drawn with several variations simultaneously. I understand artistic preference, but some of the changes to the New 52 should be standard across the board. Batman, most noticeably, is seen sporting the black underpants, which look ridiculous when he is alone in this fashion choice. Martian Manhunter's appearance also differs greatly between chapters, with his colors changing and head shape changing for no apparent reason. This seems to be a lot of negativity on the art, and it is, but there are also several examples of excellent art that moves the story and pleases the reader to no end.As for the writing, it is not a seamless transition from chapter to chapter. As these issues were released separately, and under many titles, DC has to both write for the followers of individual title readers, as well as those who read many character's issues. As such, there are lines of dialogue that read of complete redundancy and detract from the pace of the story. The overall quality of the story is impressive. It draws upon dozens of DC characters into a central story, with a coherent plot tying them all together. It does, nevertheless, feel sewn together at some points, with the Supergirl issues in particular jutting out from the rest of the main attraction.Overall, is it a good comic book? Yes, it lives up to my expectations as both a respectful treatment of the Doomsday mythos as well as something new and enjoyable. Does it have some faults? Yes, without question. Are they world ending issues? No, but they are unpleasant distractions. This book isn't cheap, and better comic stories can be purchased for a third of the price. Doomed, however, is a deep, multi-layered story that introduces a new challenge for Superman, one that he truly has difficulties in facing. It is well worth the price tag.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Finally, a better look at DOOMSDAY.... WORTH BUYING!!! By JQ16 NO SPOILERS: I felt this Connotative take on Doomsday was pretty Damn Good! He is not written as just some 2 dimensional being who is like DC's version of the Hulk, he is much more integral to Superman's design on a level of ethics and moral. Like all of Superman's Greatest in his legacy, he is torn on using or abusing his iconic power to levy his situation. I Love to read these Big epic runs on the Man of Steel in general, because I feel that is how his stories should be told. Im not a huge fan on the current Superman run, but I do highly recommend this title, and Unchained. (The more recent New 52 titles) If you want a fun read than this is worth checking out for sure!

By Uncle Mickey Far, far ahead of its time, The Mad Hatter was available for only two issues before his publishers gave up on him. It's too bad, really, because The Mad Hatter was a precursor of wisecracking heroic Marvel Comics character -- Spider-Man in particular. Combining puns with punches as he taunts the bad guys while rendering them as helpless physically as Peter Parker would do just as ably two decades later the Mad Hatter seems more modern in approach than many of the Golden Age heroes. There are also genuine laughs as the bad guys hopelessly fight against him, getting pummeled bodies and punctured egos rather than the expected loot. Issue two was a major step up as his creators tweaked the dialogue to where it should be and allowed illustrator Mort Leav to polish the artwork to a fine fettle. Still, modern readers be warned: the color registration is slightly off like so many books of the era but this does not interfere (for me, anyway) with the Mad Hatter's entertainment value. As the banner on the cover proclaims: "A New Kind of Comic Magazine." The likes of which we would not see until Stan Lee came into his own as a comic-book author!

Most looking at this are probably already familiar with Dexter, a serial killer that kills serial killers. The plot in this comic book series is an original one that we haven't seen yet in the book or TV series. In this comic book, Dexter's wife Rita drags him to his high school reunion, where Dexter crosses paths with Steve Gonzalez, an old classmate that had bullied him in high school. The next day, Dexter and the rest of the Miami Police Department crime team are at work on a new murder case, and Dexter suspects his former nemesis may be responsible. In comic form, especially in only 5 issues, it's hard to provide a lot of background and character development. Those reading this comic should probably already be familiar at least with who Dexter is to find it most enjoyable. As a huge fan of the TV series and novels, I found these comics to be entertaining. The violence is toned down a lot from the novels and TV show, but still has the Dexter elements I love. Overall, a fun adaptation.

My girlfriend and I had just started watching the series (Showtime) and I was just starting to read the first novel. At this point, I have seen the entire series and have read the first two novels. I think this comic was great and I'm glad I picked up the full story as a graphic novel. I liked the way Dalibor Talajic depicted Dexter's "Dark Passenger" as a shadowy figure that emanates or is always lingering around Dexter just out the mind's eye. I did think the ending was a tad forced (it went too quick for me) but it's a comic book and sometimes creative is forced by the limitations of their editors into a limited series. Otherwise, it was good mystery story. One where Dexter's "Dark Passenger" identifies his quarry early on but, of course, we know that his "kills" are never easy with Debra lingering about mucky up the works. All in all I enjoyed this work and hope that plans are in the works to continue on doing more short comic stories based on this character. Good read!
