Black Bat By KateM 4.5*Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.Tony Quinn used to work as a lawyer for the mob, he put aside his ethics and family values to enjoy the lifestyle this afforded but when he refuses to take a life the mob take his eyes as payback. A secret organisation comes to his rescue, fitting him with bionic eyes, transforming him into The Black Bat and giving him the powers and resources to exact revenge on his enemies, however they have their own agenda and it soon becomes apparent that no one is to be trusted.There's a lot going on in the story, it's engagingly written, using different timelines to weave the present day story with Tony's past life. The artwork is dark, brooding and perfect for the noir feel of the novel; the colour palette used also reflects the grim storyline. The detail in some of the panels is amazing and at the end of the read there is 40 pages of artwork, different cover pages by multiple artists and all of it superb.Whilst the story conveys a strong moral and ethical message I wanted the ending for Tony to be different. For a man who already had so much taken away from him, the ending was bittersweet to say the least; that I was so invested in his outcome speaks volumes about the strength of the story.Highly recommended.

A superhero who makes mistakes and a city that doesn't know what to do with a guy in a mask make for a pretty good story By Wayne A McCoy 'Black Bat Omnibus' collects all twelve issues of the maxi-series. I was heading toward a five star review, but felt a little let down by how some of the story got wrapped up.Tony Quinn is a mob defense lawyer, but along the way he displeases the bosses and they blind him. He is approached by a shadowy organization that offers to help him. They give him so cool eye implants and some combat training and the Black Bat is born. He is a vigilante in a city where he finds himself working between the criminals and the cops. Now he's out to get revenge on the people who blinded him, but he also wants to find out who's been kidnapping the city's cops.I liked Tony's imperfect approach to crimefighting. It's new to him, and he doesn't always succeed. Except for the Black Bat's tech and his crimefighting, I liked that this is a city that doesn't know what to do with a guy in a mask. I liked his partner, Silk. A guy on the edge of things needs a partner that knows the streets, and Silk seems a lot more realistic than some.The story was good, but some of the plot reveals seemed either too obvious or anticlimactic. I'm not sure I liked the ending. I'm still thinking about it. The book ends with a huge cover gallery of alternate covers by all kinds of artists like Jae Lee, J. Scott Campbell, Joe Benitez and a whole lot more. It works really great as a reboot because it doesn't feel like one. It feels like a fresh original story. I enjoyed reading it.I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, Dynamite Entertainment and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this terrific graphic novel.

Farming practices from around the world are featured, along with activities at Tate’s own Dark Pond Farm on Vancouver Island. The narrative bounces around within those subjects, picking and choosing a few things to highlight before leaping into something else. The focus is on small-scale farming and the importance of diversity of crops and animals, while briefly touching on the dangers of large agribusiness. The book is handsomely designed with many high-quality photographs, though some are too small for proper viewing. While the subtitle is misleading (for the most part, the text skirts the topic of kids helping to feed the world), some photos do show children from different countries happily going about their farm chores. By Joseph Forte Nikki Tate, a best-selling children’s author, book reviewer, and urban farmer has masterfully assembled a nonfiction text that focuses on the young farmers of the world and the importance of their existence as they assist everyone in making mealtime an occasion to look forward to. The book is laid out in an attractive manner with unique title fonts, subtitles and eye capturing photographs that will hold the attention of any student. Chapters are detailed and cover a variety of information from plants and seeds, to multi-purpose animals to working on a farm. Down to Earth also houses a resource page, listing supplementary books and websites, in addition to a table of contents and an index page for quick referencing of definitions and terms.This text would be most useful for Junior and Intermediate teachers as it offers the opportunity to question students in both literal and inferential ways. Down to Earth provides plenty of straight forward information that can be located but it also forces students to read between the lines, think like a farmer, and realize the importance and value that farmers around the world possess. A creative component can also be met by providing a chance to gain an in-depth and insightful look into the horticulture world, while potentially developing a template and plan to own and operate a farm of their choice.

From the introduction:"The Kiso Road--the Kisoji in Japanese--runs about sixty miles through central Nagano Prefecture and mostly follows first the Narai and then the Kiso River (traveling from north to south) through the granite forest-covered mountains of that same name. It is the heart of the longer 340-mile road, the Nakasendo (also called the Kisokaido), which stretches from Tokyo to Kyoto. It is called a 'road,' and it often runs parallel to or on Highway 19 but just as often wanders into the mountains as a smaller paved road or just a narrow path of dirt or ancient paving stones. The Kisoji has been in use for perhaps over two thousand years, although it was most popular as a thoroughfare during the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries, when travelers walked, rode on horseback, or were carried in palanquins through the mountains, along scary suspension bridges built on cliffs overlooking the swift river, and over the steep passes. "It is not too easy to get lost on this road, although it can be done, as I have sometimes proven; markers are posted along the way in Japanese, English, Korean, and Chinese because the authorities do not want to go looking for you. There are also eleven villages, established in 1601 as post towns, about six to seven miles apart, where the modern hiker can stop for the night in traditional inns just as his counterparts did far back into the past. And, although there are sometimes quick gains and drops in elevation as the road meanders through the mountains, even people in moderate shape can walk the entire sixty miles in less than a week. My preference, however, is to take it at a much more moderate pace. The beauty of the mountains and rivers, and the experience of the traditional baths, cuisine, and bedding in the inns are not to be rushed through. "This account is also somewhat of a story map. Over the years that I've traveled the Kisoji, I've been lucky enough to meet with a number of people--innkeepers, coffee shop owners, farmers, Buddhist priests, and hikers like myself--who have generously shared their knowledge of the rich history, traditions, and folklore of the area. Because of the antiquity of the road--it is first mentioned in a Japanese chronicle dated 701 CE--there are also a number of books that describe not only the geography and topography of the road, but also local spots inhabited by ghosts and animals like foxes and badgers that bewitch the unwary traveler, or that are famous for some romantic or tragic event. These guidebooks, many of which were written in the early 1800s when the Kiso Road was at its greatest popularity, were intended for the inquisitive traveler of those times, and are still wonderfully informative. Poets and journalists such as Basho and Shiki also loved traveling the Kiso Road, and, along with excerpts from the early guidebooks, I have included a number of their poetic impressions, many by Santoka, the shabby Zen priest/haiku poet/sake drinker, whose presence I felt constantly. "In this way, the territory covered here is not just geographical, the time line not limited, and the hike not mine alone."

By DJN Like any and all of Mr Wilson's translations and thoughtful, original works, Walking the Kiso Road, is another one to add to his long list of insightful and captivating endeavors. Over the years, I have read and reread all 18 of the titles ascribed to him, master translator, and I am NEVER disappointed. This book immediately transports you onto the old Kiso Road, presenting the essence of what it must have been like to walk that road, from post town to post town, from shrine to shrine, from inn to inn, since time immemorial! In fact, all 490 miles of the Nakasendo, or Kisokaido, are laid at my feet...If you have any interest in Japanese history, culture, or certainly if you plan to travel along this ancient pilgrimage and trade route, you will find this book invaluable! It paints quite an inviting picture of all the major sites to experience along the main section, 60 miles, of the old Kiso Road.

Stewart "Walking the Kiso Road" is a good title; after reading it, I fell that I walked with the author through the mountains' spectacular autumn foliage of maples, cedars and cypress, ate delicious home-cooked meals, drank the best sake as well as the worst, felt the fatigue of the elder hiker with rain, blisters and sore muscles to boot, met so many warm and hospitable people along the way and found it so enjoyable that I am ready to take the trip myself, as I know that although it would be somewhat different in particulars, it would be equally pleasurable.The history of the area, and of Japan, are brought to life; the Kiso Road was in its day one of 5 major "interstates", traveled by the emperor, shoguns and their large retinues. If you enjoy haiku, the road is punctuated with stone tables engraved with haikus by Basho and others who walked the road . My favorite road sign was at the foot of a trail going up a mountain which reads, "When it sees trash, the mountain cries." I so prefer that message to "No Littering".All of which is to say that the author brings his subject, and this reader, to life with the joy of a fine experience. Thanks, Beeru.

By Ty Collins Young Jijii may get his "poses" by using refs, but the linearts are so beautiful you won't care a bit...This story follows GT and gives it so much more meaning. If you hated GT, this story will make you rethink some things.Still waiting on physical copies of Volume 8-14. All of which have been translated to English, yet for some reason aren't published yet...

Weird Weird By ChibiNeko Ever read A Series of Unfortunate Events & thought "It would be really cool if instead of focusing on a trio of orphans & mysterious events, it'd be cool if Snicket wrote about conjoined twins?" If you've ever thought that, then you're in luck. Dresden Dolls genius Amanda Palmer has you covered in spades. (Oh yeah, and Jason Webley. I'm not too familiar with his stuff.)Fans of Amanda Palmer won't be surprised at how completely twisted & strange this collection is. A story like this can really only be properly told by someone as wickedly unique as her. It's not PC, but that's not the point of this story. The point is to showcase two talents that have been here all along.The storyline of the book is quite frankly very dark. If you saw this & thought "oh how cute, a kid's book" then you'll be incredibly mistaken. There's nothing in this that's appropriate for children. The book starts off with the twins' sad beginning & from there goes through a pretty tragic course of events. I don't want to spoil the book for you but there's stuff in here ranging from child abuse to pedophilia. None of it is especially graphic. You never see it "on screen" or directly called out for what it was by the twins, but it is there. People who prefer not to read books with this sort of material will probably want to steer clear or at least get this for a library read. (Hey, nothing wrong with that. I avoid overly tragic movies for the same reason.)Artwork-wise, it really fits the tone of the story. The artwork is sad and depressing, but intentionally so. After all, it's not like this is a story about two happy-go-lucky girls fighting evil with magical powers given to them by a stray cat. There was a lot of time & care put into the art in this book & I can't help but admire it even as I wince at some of the things inferred in it. (We can thank the uber-talented Cynthia von Buhler for this artwork!)Overall this was a pretty great read, but I think it'll really only appeal to a specific group of people. It's definitely worth reading but I recommend this as a library read first for anyone who is on the fence about purchasing this book. There will be people for whom this will be an absolutely buy immediately book, but others will be content to read this once, bask in its glow for a while, then remain content to keep up with the twins via the internet.4/5 stars(ARC provided by Netgalley)EDIT:I just want to add that the inspiration for this book came from a performance idea that Webley and Palmer came up with. This book is merely the cherry on top of the cake as far as their music goes. In the comments field I've included a link to my favorite song of theirs, so I hope you give it a looking at!

By your pal, tom the illustrations are perfect for the story of EE. read along with the songs on the music CD (sold separately) to get the full story -- it's really necessary to hear "elephant elephant" and not just read the pages. but a fun book, actually 2 books, separate, like the two sisters, but packaged together. cool.

Well written and drawn.I'm sure if you're looking at this book then you already have some idea of Evelyn Evelyn and who they are, so I assume I don't really need to say anything else to convince you to buy it.. But what I will say is; this book is a must read and is worth every cent and more!

Fantastic book of thoughtful questions By Debra M DiClaudio I have done a lot of personal growth work so I wasn't sure how useful this book would be for me. I was pleasantly surprised that there were a number of thought provoking questions that I have taken time to answer and will continue to spend time exploring about myself. This book is well worth the price and time it takes to read it and answer the questions that you most relate to. I very much recommend this book to anyone is who is new to personal growth as well as for personal growth junkies like myself.

Barrie's books are written in such a way that a reader can embark within moments on a pathway leading to deeper connection with self and with the world. She is interested in the questions we each need to answer in a lifetime and she makes them approachable and engaging.
