On his journey By Ariana "The Bullywol Visitor" is an imaginative first attempt by author Cardigan Broadmoor, a writer and illustrator who prides himself as eclectic. And eclectic this publication is. The story is of some Ancient-Wizard-Alien-Man from Planet Fryng who has, so far, spent his long and lonely life in silence. Everything changes when he sees a shooting star which, assuming he has finally given into boredom, he grabs a hold of and is pulled across the cosmos on a whimsical and fantastic adventure. On his journey, he meets talking ancient stars, a "wild wumpus!," a baby wumpus (an unexpectedly adorable lump of fur with big fangs, big eyes and a big heart), and a two legged dog-like creature named Sprink. Baby Wumpus, Sprink, and the Bullywol Visitor end up on a snowy, mountainous region of Earth, where the three traveling companions encounter a colony of "underground little monsters." These monsters are then spurred to weave a magical, space traveling wicker basket. The three journey off back into the great unknown, vowing to return again one day to that beautiful, snowy mountain.I know. You're wondering, "and just how many drugs did Broadmoor have to take to come up with all this?" And the answer is - who cares. The text surprisingly abounds with strong themes, even amidst its strangeness: The difference between solitude and loneliness; friendship; adventure; and a love of nature both heavenly and terrestrial. Character development is apparent as well, centered around a terrified, curmudgeon old man who faces his fears and learns that life is better lived with friends at his side. All of this is accomplished in 62 pages, half of which contain illustrations. The illustrations - let's take a minute to discuss those. They are truly the highlight of the text. The color palate is simple; monochrome and this particular shade of turquoise. The turquoise truly defines the art in an aesthetic sense, giving the pages a striking quality. But what is truly remarkable about the turquoise is the message it conveys: this is a dark turquoise, reminiscent of an evergreen tree. If you've ever lived in a wintry region of the world, then you know that evergreens are the only hint of color in a snow colored landscape. They are also the only sign that life still exists under all that snow, and is waiting for the right time to emerge again. That is the sense you get with "The Bullywol Visitor." There is a man, seemingly cold and harsh like winter, but there is still an "evergreen to his spirit" (if you'll forgive me for being overly poetic). And this complex message is so simply conveyed. The major problem with the text is its weak ending (I swear, I won't give it away!). Broadmoor shows his novice here - the book is intended to be part of a series, and one gets the impression that he thinks that a resolution can wait until the final installment. He has yet to find that balance between a satisfying ending that can still suggest more to come. Finally, we would be avoiding the white elephant in the room if we didn't talk about this whole "not-for-children's book" nonsense (also..."children" is a collective noun!!!!!!!). That may have been his initial vision, as a reader can clearly see in how well developed his themes are and the complicated message which he intended. However, many readers, writers and parents as well, tend to overlook that while children do need things simplified and visualized for them, children are still very much like adult readers in that they have an intuitive sense of quality. No, kids cannot tell you what the theme of the text is, or what the difference between climax and conflict is, but kids do know one thing very well - what they like. Most of all, kids HATE things that stink. Or things that are boring. Or stupid."The Bullywol Visitor," despite its flaws, does not stink; is not boring; certainly not stupid. The book addresses complex themes which are important to kids (friendship, adventure, overcoming your fears), but does so in an elegantly simply way which children can understand. So buy this story book for your kids. Ignore that "not-for-children" hoo-ha. That's just a sign that Broadmoor needs a new editor.

By Jamie I have known Cardigan Broadmoor for a number of years, as we used to go to college together when he was beginning to write his short stories. To say his imagination is impeccable would be an understatement. This guy is one of the most creative characters out there that I have ever had the great pleasure to call a friend. The Bullywol Visitor is the perfect debut for such creativity. A simple, yet thoughtful and very smoothly written story accompanied by very imaginative illustrations grab the reader instantly. I also do not think this would be too harmful for younger kids over the age of seven or eight. I have always enjoyed reading Cardigan's short stories and absolutely cannot wait to read his next published effort.
