I immediately reread the series and loved it even more the second time By dch56 Wow, let me begin by saying that I have NEVER given out a 5 star review. I have also never finished a series then immediately reread it. At first, I thought rereading it would make me change my mind about the 5 stars. However, the book was even better the second time! Everything made sense and I found myself laughing and crying all over again.I'm a very critical reader but I'm rating this book purely on entertainment and emotion. I loved the protagonist, Violet, and I found myself wishing I was 17 again just so I could experience falling in love for the first time all over again. I agree with some who don't believe Nate is very well developed, but since we were looking at him through Violet's eyes I found myself drawn to him as well. Tall, tanned, sweet, smart... He is what Violet wants and needs to stop her loneliness. One reviewer asked- Why would she put her guardian training at risk for this human boy? She wants someone to love her, that's why.I won't spoil anything for new readers so let me tell you this- there are more to these books than romance and guardian assignments. Everything is so well thought out and all of the characters and dialogue connect through all three novels. The first page of this book ties into the last book. Its fascinating to find a lack of discrepancies in the series (when I have found discrepancies within solo novels). I have already suggested this book to friends and cannot wait to recommend it to my students this year!
41 of 46 people found the following review helpful. Faeries and Magic By Holly I think I may be in the minority here when I say that although I enjoyed the book, I didn't love it. I wouldn't reread it, but as a start to the series, it was fascinating. It reminded me a lot of Harry Potter, although it was a darker story-line.The book started out immensely enjoyable. The main character, Violet, is out on an assignment when she meets Nate, the human boy she's been sent to protect. Something goes wrong. Nate can see her although she's glamoured. Worse yet, he follows her into the Fae realm, endangering both their lives.But somewhere along the way, it lost its magic. When I was over halfway through, though, it picked back up. It got exponentially more interesting, and I was startled by some plot twists that I never saw coming. I sped through that last half, found myself quite intrigued with the sudden changes, and finished it with the thought that I really want to read book number two, The Faerie Prince.The main character is Violet Fairdale, a faerie that's training to become a Guardian. I can't tell if I'm annoyed with Violet's character, or that I'm not totally giving her a chance. As someone who has spent her whole life following the rules of the Guild, she sure threw all of that away in a quick instant. All because of some human boy. I could understand it, if I thought of it in the way that Violet was finally doing something she wants for a change. After all those years of strict guidelines on how to run her life, she's defying the people who turned their backs on her. For once in her life, she's doing something freely, and she's letting herself become vulnerable.And yet there are still some things about her personality that really grated on my nerves. She has no parents, no friends. Except for her mentor, Tora, she doesn't seem to care about anyone. All she cares about is being number one in her class, beating her nemesis and tormentor, Ryn, and becoming a Guardian. Even when she was starting to care for Nate, it still didn't seem more important to her than becoming the best. She acts like she doesn't care about what people think, but it's all she cares about. That, and becoming a guardian. But as the story went on, Violet showed growth as a character, especially after a very shocking and horrible twist that leaves her wounded and heartbroken.I wasn't sold on the romance. It sort of felt a little like insta-love. And even more so because Violet isn't the type of woman who just puts her Guardian career in jeopardy for a boy she hasn't known more than a few days. Or is she? That confused me. Her personality was sort of up and down. I also wasn't in love with Nate. Yes, he was funny and nice, but other than that, he didn't really have much of a personality. Now I know why I didn't like him very much to begin with, and now I know why I didn't like the romance between them.The fantastical elements of the story were nicely written. I liked the idea of this Faerie realm being separate from the human world. Yet these Guardians still protect the humans from out of control creatures like goblins, pixies, and other grotesquely inhabitants of the Faerie realm. I would've loved more detailed descriptions of the faerie world and all of these different creatures, though. What's a reptiscilla, a urisk? The author threw out words and never explained them, never explained what these creatures were and what they looked like. It left so much to the imagination. With it being in the fantasy genre, it didn't make any sense to me to leave out details that could create vivid images to help the readers understand the world that the main characters live in. It was missing that creative imagery.The writing style itself drew me in, and the way the author used Violet's voice to tell the story was nicely done.Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with the book. The last half of the story really saved it for me, and it left me wondering what's going to happen next.

But the fact that this series started over a year ago and doesn't have more reviews? It saddens me, since I admit I normally go for books with more reviews. "Safe" purchases if you will. I LOVED THIS SERIES.I tore through all 3 of the books in a weekend, and I must say it was a nice getaway. The main character Vi was a thrill, and the plot twists were a true delight. I admit that Ryn has ruined me for other men, since I do believe my bar is now set to a whole new level. The world was so intriguing, and the author goes into depth about scenery and technology in a beautiful way. I am not one to read pages and pages of descriptions, and this author didn't disappoint me. Nonstop action and plot twists, along with a snarky romance with so much tension you just want to wallop the two over the head.Spoiler:I do admit I wanted to see more out of the final confrontation of Nate and Vi. I was kind of a big fan of him in book 1. Heresy, I know. How dare I cheat on my Ryn?All and all, a great series with little to no grammatical errors, a fun romance, great action set in a fun world, and did you notice the awesome price? You can't lose here.
