1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. basic resource By R. Shoff This book depicts 20 paintings appropriate to view with children. Unfortunately, there is no text or further descriptions. More information would make it really useful for lesson plans or further study. But, a good resource for a starting point.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This is how you can deepen your and your child's understanding of Degas. By Rob Natiuk EDGAR DEGAS (1834 to 1917) was a famous French artist – paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings. More than half of his works features dancing and dancers. Critics labeled him as Impressionist but he preferred Realist.Degas was obsessed with painting early in his life. In his high school and college years, he had turned a room in his house into a studio. His art teacher gave him this advice: “Draw lines, young man, and still more lines, both from life and from memory, and you will become a good artist.” Do you think that’s good advice? Why or why not?Look at his self-portrait #1. What can you tell about him? What did Degas want others to see? Painting #3 we have a dance class. How does it resemble today’s dance studios? What’s different? Besides dancing, what other subjects did Degas love to paint? Look closely at paintings in a category, such as portraits of people and people in common pursuits. How well do you think Degas captured the “soul” of these people? To observe paintings and think about the why’s and how’s of the artist makes them more meaningful.

19 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Ultron, the Vision... and a whole lot more By Dan Pace (feral atom) Collecting Avengers 31-58, Annuals 1-2 and X-men 45. Extras are the same as the Masterworks, except do not include the photostats for #51 and #54 and the Triple Action cover by Ditko is quarter-sized. What you get on top of the material included in the Masterworks are Revengers pages from Not Brand Ecch 5 and 8, original art of the covers for 44 and 48, the 3 softcover Masterworks artwork, and the Marvel Triple Action reprint covers (at 1/4 size). In addition, letters pages and Roy Thomas' always scintillating introductions.Though Don Heck pencils a bit more than a third of the issues in this omnibus, this run also showcases the first Avengers pencil for John Buscema and has some of his best art on the Avengers. John Buscema had a way of making Goliath look massive, powerful, and larger than life in a way that few artists have done before or after. As Roy says in the intro, with the way he has the Vision grab his cape, John differentiates the Vision straight away with a majestic and yet ethereal quality. It's easy to see why the Vision climbed in popularity through these early years. For fans of Marvel Cinematic, we get an Ant-Man/Wasp story (even if he's wearing his Goliath costume, he spends much of the issue in an ant hill). We also get great action with Black Panther, the Collector, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, the Vision, and Ultron. Magneto shows up in five issues here.Marvel includes the letters pages from these classic Silver Age issues. I love reading through the relevant letters after finishing an issue.John's inking over his own pencils looks awesome in 49-50 and cannot be missed! His rendering of the Hydra looks amazing!Ultron makes his first appearances here as well as the Vision, Typhon, the Grim Reaper, the Scarlet Centurion, the Crimson Cowl, and the new Masters of Evil.A two-part crossover with the X-men and Magneto has Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch playing prominent roles (X-men 45 and Avengers 53). There's also a time travel story with Bucky and Baron Zemo. The art on Annual #2 was done by Don Heck and Werner Roth and not their best work at that. It's enjoyable alternate history story that sees the original lineup face the current lineup with Scarlet Centurion pulling the strings. If only Buscema could've added that to his slate. As it stands, the cover is done by Buscema, one of the best team face-off covers he did and one of my favorite Avengers covers. This omnibus is highly recommended!

The first Avengers art by the great John Buscema! A great Avengers vs. X-Men fight is also included (don't these teams ever get along!) and secrets of the Black Widow & the Black Panther joins. Oh & not to forget a lot of this was written by the awesome Roy Thomas! what's not to love!!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. beautiful!!! By JR Cruz sorry to get back so late. this book arrived in good time and in better shape than i expected, looking brand new. i absolutely love it, seeing Roy Thomas' first great Avengers tales, and having them drawn by Don Heck (an extremely underrated talent) and by the great one, Big John Buscema. An embarassment of riches! Great stories with the classic team lineup, Iron Man, Cap, Thor, Goliath and the Wasp, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, and the intros of legends Ultron-5 and the Vision! Great stuff. I'll definitely not hesitate to get my omnibus collection from Amazon in future.

Roger Dahl's Zero Gravity cartoon strip has been a popular feature of Japan's leading English-language daily newspaper, The Japan Times, since 1991.Now, for the first time, Roger Dahl's Comic Japan brings together the best of Zero Gravity in book form. Offering a Western artist's take on Japan, the strip stars Larry and Lily, a young American couple working as English teachers in Tokyo. Larry and Lily never manage to fully integrate into Japanese society, and Zero Gravity takes a whimsical approach to the meeting of cultures as well as the quirky dynamics of changing relationships between generations and subgroups within Japan. Besides Larry and Lily, Zero Gravity features their close friends, the Koyama family, whose three very different generations encounter plenty of misunderstandings of their own! This anthology contains eight chapters featuring the best selection of strips from Larry and Lily's life in Japan. Each chapter opens with a brief passage about its theme, and a 3-page illustrated introduction provides information about Dahl, his career, and his inspiration for Zero Gravity.Graphic novels and comic books have experienced explosive growth in recent years, and Roger Dahl's Comic Japan offers humorous cross-cultural observations that will delight visitors to Japan and armchair travelers alike.

Review "This book is a collection of some of his best strips from the Zero Gravity comic. If you are, have been or are interested in becoming an expat (especially one in Japan), this book will interest you. Actually, you will like this book if you're interested in life in Japan at all… even if you never even visited here." —Tokyo Five blog"Dahl has a knack for cleverly pointing out the bizarreness of everyday life in Japan while still maintaining affection for the country and its people. A delightful and funny collection." —Walter Mondale, former US Ambassador to Japan"Dahl's cartoon has an intriguing power to turn your mundane, awkward, even frustrating everyday experiences in Japan into light-hearted cultural adventures. In this collection, the bits and pieces of his weekly strips come together in synthesis as a story." —Miki Tanikawa, Journalist New York Times and International Herald Tribune"Most non-Japanese who have spent time in Japan will recognize both Japan and themselves in Roger Dahl's fine cartoons. He is an equal-opportunity satirist, skewering foreigners and host country alike. My own favorites include "The Darkest Hour" (about the intricacies of trash disposal, p. 13), "Polite Country" (the panel ends with the foreigner sighing, "I need a vacation in a rude country," p. 131), and a Swiss army knife adapted for Japan, complete with abacus, chopsticks, and karaoke mike (p. 142)." —Dr. Richard Minear, author of Dr. Seuss Goes To War and professor emeritus at University of Massachusetts"The drawing is lively and expressive,[…] This is a book of smiles, not guffaws, yet the accumulation of strips builds a picture of an expat lifestyle, with its attendant loneliness, confusion, and thrills." —Publishers Weekly"Roger Dahl's genius is evident from the fact that his cartoons, rather than laughing *at* the Japanese, let readers laugh *with* the Japanese. And he manages to be both funny and incisive without engaging in stereotypes or bowing to the demands of political correctness." —Mark Schreiber, Tokyo-based scribe and raconteur"Roger Dahl's Zero Gravity is modern Japan in a bento box, capturing both the insider and the outsider view with flair, minimalism and artfulness. Sparing in words but never stinting on comic advantage, Dahl shows an extraordinary ability to draw out the humor in a situation without drawing judgment on it, and to temper wit, even at its satirical sharpest, with a genuine fondness for Japan." —Payal Kapadia, award-winning children's author, journalist, and former editor of The Japan Times"Roger Dahl's Zero Gravity: The Lighter Side of Tokyo Life takes you to the crowded train platforms of Shinjuku, the tatami-mat homes, izakaya bars and offices where Japanese and gaijin haplessly interact. He showcases all of this with fluid, graceful lines and warm, insightful humor. Roger's cartoons are a wonderful introduction to Japan for anyone with a funny bone." —Gwen Muranaka, Cartoonist, "Noodles," Japan Times (1996-2013), English editor-in-chief, The Rafu Shimpo (Los Angeles Japanese Daily News)

About the Author Roger Dahl has a degree in art from the University of Puget Sound and a degree in Rehabilitation Medicine from the University of Washington. He lived for many years in Tokyo, where he was an English teacher at an elite private academy for boys. During his last four years of teaching, he began cartooning for The Japan Times, which has published around 4,000 of his cartoons since 1991. He also illustrated the children's book Wisha Wozzariter (Penguin, 2012), which won the prestigious Crossword Book Awards in India for Best Children's Book of 2013. He now lives in Seattle.

All around fun book :) By Grace Mineta I confess, I hadn't read many of Roger Dahl's comics in the Japan Times - but I found this book while I was waiting for my flight in Narita and instantly fell in love. The comics are cute (sometimes deep) - and show a humorous window into life in Japan. Roger Dahl is an excellent storyteller and fabulous comic artist. What makes this book especially wonderful is the fact that it's funny both if you know tons about Japan or if you're a relative newbie. I've lived here a bit over four years, and still learned a couple new things.I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about Japan. Or who wants to have a good laugh from some comics.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good for the early reader By John Z I'm a Chicken Soup for the Soul blogger. They send me their books. I read them, review them, and share. One of the latest books I got from them is Be the Best You Can Be. This time though, the book isn't really for myself, but for my eight-year old son, as the subtitle is Inspiring True Stores about Goals & Values for Kids and Preteens. The book is the first of four books from Chicken Soup for the Soul and The Boniuk Foundation that explores the subject of tolerance, parenting, and making good choices. The other three titles basically just go up the age scale, with similar themes. In this book, I like how the stories present great roll models for the kids. For the other titles, we'll see them later this year and next. The 101 stories of this book are broken down into twelve chapters:* Making Your Best Effort* Doing the Right Thing* Accepting Differences* Appreciating Your Family* Handling Bullies* Having Confidence in Yourself* Being Generous* Making True Friends* Accepting Responsibility* Being Kind* Being Grateful* Getting through Tough TimesThe book is a great one for your child to read if they are having difficulties in school, where they can focus on the stories on that subject, like bullying. The stories represent fantastic conversation starters and in fact each chapter ends with a series of conversation starter questions. The stories help your child create a foundation towards modeling good behavior. They're at a very impressionable time right now and this book will help them steer themselves in the right direction.I like. Curious to see how the partnership works out with the other titles. Apparently, they're still looking for stories for the college age child collection book.

With sections like, 'Doing the Right Thing', 'Accepting Responsibility' and 'Getting Through Tough Times', including many more relevant topics, children and teens could be inspired to make wise choices. This collection of personal accounts of children, who have faced the same issues they're having, would show them that their not alone with these struggles, and just like the writers in this book, they can get through them. If your looking for a book that can help instill values, one story a time, this would be an excellent choice.Disclaimer:In exchange for an honest review, Simon and Schuster, and Graf Martin Communications provided me with a complimentary copy of this book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Encouragement for all Ages By ALuckyLadybugCom I appreciate the fact that this book teaches my children the importance of not only self respect but respect for others and their differences. It also gives children real life situations so they know we are not just preaching on the subject. The stories are instances which the kids can understand without having to expose them to today's tragedies which are causes of these types of self esteem issues.

The approximately 30 million or more Kurds famously constitute the largest nation in the world without its own independent state. The desire of many Kurds for independence, or at least cultural and even political autonomy, has led to an almost continuous series of Kurdish revolts. The resulting situation constitutes the Kurdish problem or question. Calling on more than 30 years of studying the Kurdish issue, numerous trips to the region, and many contacts among the Kurds, including almost all of their main leaders, Michael Gunter has written a short, but thorough history of the Kurds that is well documented, but still proves very readable. His narrative also includes numerous interesting personal experiences that will further explain these people who are for the most part moderate Muslims in favour of gender equality and are also wildly pro-American.

Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Old Fashion Mystery By Sylvia Wadlington The Childerbridge Mystery by Guy Newell Boothy was written in 1902 and mystery writing has become much more complex since then. This tale is written in the classic English, murder in the Manor, style and has a bit of everything you'd expect including a love story, a murder, a few ghosts and a bit of suspense. Lacking the details of a contemporary piece made it fairly short and though I didn't find the work riveting, it was an enjoyable, quiet read.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Clever twists By Larry, true dedicated reader The Childerbridge Mystery . . . . . Guy Newell BoothbyWritten just at the turn of the century (19th to 20th), this novel is pretty much an old English manor mystery story. Of course, there is a murder - with another mystery on top of that. Plus a ghost tale is involved. Then, too, there is the thwarted romance angle. Pretty much standard fare for such tales, except there are a few unusual twists thrown in which make it a good read.Judging this book on the time period and its type, I allot it 4 stars.William Standerton had emigrated to Australia at the age of 15. Eventually he married and had two children. His wife had died a few months after the second child was born. Years passed and he became quite wealthy. At the start of the novel he decided to take his children, 24 year old James and 20 year old Alice, and return to England, purchase a manor house and retire to comfortable country living. Just prior to departure from Australia something occurs which has a dire effect on those plans.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I'll Go Along With Most of the Other Reviewers By drkhimxz 1902 is the date on this mystery, the first by Guy Boothby that I have read. I am going to get the others in Kindle editions which, if this is a good sample of his work, are a bargain at the price (in this case-free). It is possible that you will not like the easy-going style of the period in which, customarily, the Good Guys are good clean through and the Bad Guys......The woman, of course, are lovely, intelligent, demure, and worshipful toward their Men. No nasty premarital sex nor lovemaking that goes beyond a chaste hug, a light kiss on the hand, or, in advanced cases, light kiss on the cheek, perhaps, even on the lips. The Good Guys are virile, usually well-dressed in whatever garb, rough or formal, suits the particular occasion. As much as possible, ugly detailing of the manner of death are avoided as are most of the dark side of the world (save for the iniquitous settings into which heroine and hero may, of necessity, enter for some virtuous purpose).Am I ridiculing this style: not at all. I like books like this when well done. Modified, in the hands of a better writer, this describes the John Buchan style as well. The book is an easy and quick read, little extraneous detail to slow one down. Should be good reading for those who can adapt to the popular imagery of books that would appeal to my mother, for example, who was born in the year this was published.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An author to watch. By Abstract Notions I have become a fan of Ken Krekeler. The art in this book, as well as in his others, is great and the story is generally interesting. The only problem I have with it is that it is, in my opinion, a few hairs to short. I know Krekeler has done kick starters in the past and wonder if the books length was due in part to financial reasons. The story develops well but ends a bit to suddenly and leaves you wanting more, which there is no promise or mention of. I will say that if you just want a fun single read this one works better then his other, 'The Colodin Project', which was great but DEFINITELY NOT meant to be the single volume it has turned out to be. Im still hoping he will pick it back up. All in all definitely still worth the price though.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Absolutely Awesome By LadyDeadpool I went into reading this comic without high expectations. But I can admit when I am wrong, and Dry Spell is a fantastic damn comic. I personally like it when a comic book makes me audibly gasp and bother the other people around me on the train, and this book did just that, in multiple panels. It was a bit too short it felt, but that might have just been because I wanted to keep reading more! Overall, absolutely worth the read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Just gets better and better. By melissa Make no assumptions about this graphic novel - you think you know but you have no idea! The second you open the book you will be hooked.

Romance: A Night With A Billionaire - Contemporary Romance (Romance, Contemporary Romance, Billionaire Romance Book 1), by Nancy Adams

About the Author Nancy s addiction for a good trash novel began in her late-teens when her grandmother gave her a bag of Harlequin Romance books. She was hooked and spent the next few years lurking in the dark corners of used bookstores searching for her next fix. Until, one marriage and two kids later, her own ideas had her jumping up at 3 am (much to her husband s annoyance) and typing them into her laptop. Beside her husband and children, Nancy has three passions, rearranging furniture, buying bed linens and, of course, writing. Nancy lives in Eastern Ontario with her family and two over sized lap dogs.

I saw a real potential for a really good story, yet it fell short for me. The heroin was portrayed as an introvert at the beginning and with not enough depth /detailed change, she does an about face and then it ends. I'm like, what ?

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Cute story By Amazon Customer Cute story right until the end. It just sorta dropped off leaving you hanging. Wish it was longer. Over all cute story.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. After finishing the book and reading through the great reviews I kept going back to see if I ... By Quarterback I have read many books over the last few months and I have never written a review before.....but after reading this piece I just had tto. After finishing the book and reading through the great reviews I kept going back to see if I maybe had skipped some chapters, as I just felt that I had wasted my time reading it as the plot just never took off. I am still wondering if I read the same book as all of the other reviewers.

T-34 served in huge numbers with the Soviet Army and its allies, and was also used by their enemies! This book describes the colors and markings applied to the T-34-85 in service with all major users, including unit and tactical markings, individual names and insignia, and air recognition features.Profusely illustrated with photos and color profiles, this is essential reading for armor enthusiasts and modelers.REVIEWS "... a good overview of the development and combat history of the T-34-85.... the markings and camouflage section to be very interesting and helpful for the modeler who wants to depart from using the kit furnished markings. None of the markings are too complicated and can easily be replicated with a fine brush and a steady hand....the color illustrations helpful to get a “feeling” for what camouflage was used on T-34-85s. All of the photos are clear enough to use to provide additional detail to kit parts, with the identification of the various turret types being particularly helpful to take a modeler’s work to the next level. I can truly say that I understand the various turret types of the T-34-85 after this review. The final word: I highly recommend this book for the library of fans of the T-34 tank, WWII modelers as well as post war modelers. Lots of color profiles showing markings for Russian, Czech, Polish, Finnish, Yugoslavian, and German captured vehicles.Of course 4BO Green is most common for T34/85, but there are some examples of camo used by a few units. I really liked the walk-around section with clear photos of museum tanks detailing the differences between various factory turrets.A great addition to the library of any T34 fan.

In Charles River Editors’ American Legends series, readers can get caught up to speed on the lives of America’s most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. The Olympics have long been the center of attention in the sports world, but perhaps no moment in the history of the games was as poignant as Jesse Owens’ performance in Berlin in 1936. Owens would finish his career with 4 gold medals and become known as "perhaps the greatest and most famous athlete in track and field history" (as his obituary in the New York Times put it), but nearly 80 years later, it’s the context that has made his performance so memorable. Owens was one of the greatest track athletes in the country in the 1930s, and while he was at Ohio State, he set 3 world records and tied another one within 45 minutes at a Big Ten meet in 1935, but hurdles on the track weren’t as hard to clear as ones he had to deal with away from sports. As a young black man, he had to deal with entrenched racism across the country, from staying in segregated hotels to not being eligible for a sports scholarship, In 1936, World War II was still a few years away, but Adolf Hitler was fully in control of Nazi Germany and hoped to use the Olympics as a showcase of the resurgent German nation. Internationally, Hitler’s Germany was not yet a major concern to the vast majority of people unfamiliar with politics, nor were the domestic policies being carried out by the Nazis, but some still thought the United States should not even participate in the Olympics that year. Of course, those who wanted to boycott the games could not have known what Jesse Owens had in store in Berlin. Given the unabashed racism of Hitler’s regime, Jesse Owens’ performance would end up being a rebuke of sorts to Hitler’s notion of Aryan superiority, and an apocryphal legend has since sprung up that Hitler left the games early to avoid having to shake Owens’ hand. While that reputed snub almost certainly did not occur, one Nazi official did note that Hitler “was highly annoyed by the series of triumphs by the marvelous colored American runner, Jesse Owens. People whose antecedents came from the jungle were primitive, Hitler said with a shrug; their physiques were stronger than those of civilized whites and hence should be excluded from future games." Owens’ performance and the focus over whether Hitler snubbed him also obscured one of the most ironic aspects of Owens’ life and sports career. In fact, while some were asserting that Hitler did actually congratulate Owens, others pointed out that Owens was treated better in Germany than he was back at home, where he had to ride in a freight elevator to a reception in his honor and didn’t hear from President Roosevelt following the games. Owens himself pointed out, "Hitler didn't snub me – it was our president who snubbed me. The president didn't even send me a telegram." Indeed, Owens would find it hard to get by for the rest of his life, much of which was spent trying to capitalize off commemorations of his past exploits by resorting to gimmicks such as racing against horses. The situation led him to bitterly remark, “People say that it was degrading for an Olympic champion to run against a horse, but what was I supposed to do? I had four gold medals, but you can't eat four gold medals."

I didn’t realize that Jesse Owens and his future wife had a child before they were married. Another interesting piece in here was that Jesse’s wife Ruth threatened to sue him if he broke off his relation with her because of a Miss Quincella Nickerson. There are a lot of little gems in this book but it’s best if a reader finds out for herself/ himself. I knew that he was poor and times were hard for African-Americans in the 1930s; but, it is so very difficult for one who did not come up during that era to understand the pain that Jesse and his family went through. Another interesting tidbit before I leave is that during the Olympics the German crowds cheered for him before he went on to when his third gold metal. I highly recommend this book.

By Walter Ferguson This is a wonderful book about a great man: a black man who showed Hitlers racialtheories up for the bunk they were. In the 1936 Olympics, Owens won 4 gold medals, besting even Germany's best "pure aran" runners.Sadly, the book showed the depth of the racial divide here in America, In spite of hisOlympic accomplishments, Owens could not get a good job when he returned. Thesnub by Hitler was one thing. FDR's was something else entirely. This book dealt withall of this very well. It is well worth reading.

#1 Amazon Best Seller in "Historical India & South Asia Biographies," "Two Hour History Short Reads," and "Ethnic and National Biographies." "Growing Up in India's 'Most Backward' Caste" is a coming of age story told through the eyes of a "Most Backward" boy growing up in Tamil Nadu, India. Its pages are ripe with shame, honor, and survival-based decisions, such as a father killing his own daughter to preserve the family's reputation, a grandfather thieving a goat to feed his family and burying its bones in the night, and women employing natural poisons to kill their female infants in order to avoid the devastating costs of dowry. Perhaps it is also a story of how to survive as a "Most Backward" boy in a society that values light skin more than education, designated by British colonizers as "habitually criminal," where ancient caste rivalries persist even into an era of rapidly unfolding modernity. Is it possible, one wonders, for a boy to leave his caste identity behind and adopt new ways of seeing himself, shattering hundreds of years of prejudice? "Growing Up in India's 'Most Backward' Caste" illustrates the potential for faith, effort, and vision to overcome even the cruelest of abuses and biases. Its author, Dr. Hill Krishnan, later took on multiple identities disallowed by his roots: engineer, movie actor and performer, political scientist, professor, candidate for public office in the United States, motivational speaker, and now, as an author telling his story. In "Growing Up in India's 'Most Backward' Caste," one observes the earliest, most pivotal moments in which he first defies oppression. "Growing Up in India's 'Most Backward' Caste" is truly eye-opening—a brave, intimate portrayal of life as a "Most Backward" child resisting all categorization, inspiring the rest of us to challenge our own perceived limitations.
