So bountiful hath been the earth and so securely have we drawn from it our substance, that we have taken it all for granted as if it were only a gift, and with little care or conscious thought of the consequences of our use of it; nor have we very much considered the essential relation that we bear to it as living parts in the vast creation.

Review A voice of humility and restraint in our dealings with the natural world, Bailey reminds us that adaptation, not domination, is the measure of human progress . . . In promoting an ethic of stewardship that weaves together a regard for nature with a sense of social responsibility and duty to the future, Bailey reminds us, like Aldo Leopold and Rachel Carson would after him, that the fates of nature and humans are ultimately bound together. . . . Bailey's words will shine like a beacon for those seeking to articulate a compelling ethical and civic vision of sustainability in the twenty-first century. -- Ben A. Minteer

Recommended to any environmentalist who appreciates his cause's history By Midwest Book Review Environmentalism is not a thing exclusive to the second half of the twentieth and twenty-first century. Even at the turn of the century, people sensed something wrong. "The Holy Earth" takes a look at one of the loudest yet relatively unknown voices of early environmentalism in Liberty Hyde Bailey. Touching on his early writings and words, it's intriguing to see one of the first environmentalist minds in action. "The Holy Earth" is much recommended to any environmentalist who appreciates his cause's history.

A Short Book Full of Wisdom By Michael Wade This book is an early environmental classic (1915), wherein the Michigan farm-raised father of American horticulture and chairman of Theodore Roosevelt's Country Life Commission merged fundamental principles of biblical stewardship with insights from the life sciences. His views have great relevance for the environmental crisis; in fact, when it comes to values, they are cutting edge . Liberty Hyde Bailey, Jr. (1858-1954) inspired both Aldo Leopold (A Sand County Almanac) and Wendell Berry (The Unsettling of America, The Way of Ignorance). His father was a latter-day Puritan who allowed his son to read Darwin. The founding Dean of Cornell's College of Agriculture and author of sixty-five books, Bailey, Jr. was a truly remarkable American. His prose is from an earlier time, but clear and accessible. The ideas are both timely, and timeless. Read it. Give copies to your friends. Then pick up Wendell Berry.
