An appealing contrast: clumsy schoolgirl, sword-wielding warrior By Alt Saya may have inherited her mother's ability to read minds, or at least to read body language. She grew up without her mother but Fumito, who owns the restaurant next door, cooks for her so that's almost as good. When Saya isn't busy being a school girl, it is her duty to slay the ancient ones, demonic people eaters that have existed since the beginning of time. In that regard Saya is following in her mother's footsteps, even using her mother's divine blade. Slaying the ancient ones is an important job (and of course it must be done in a schoolgirl outfit with a short skirt), but her duties do not prevent Saya from living a normal teenage life. Another plotline involves Japanese marshmallows, a missing baker, and a mysterious stray dog.I haven't seen the anime series or film upon which this manga is based, nor have I seen the other Blood manga, so my impressions are based upon this volume as a stand-alone product. I like that much of the story concerns Saya's adolescent growing pains: her uncertainty about her future, her fear of leaving her home and her friends, her desire for social acceptance. She has a crush on a boy and her female teacher seems to have a crush on her. By issue 4, the battle with the ancient ones starts to come into sharper focus, but there are still a large number of unanswered questions. The story teases the reader with hints that there is more to the ancient ones than we know about, and we never do find out what's up with the missing baker. Saya keeps seeing hazy images of her mother so perhaps there's more to that story, too.Although it's frustrating that the story is just getting its legs toward the end of the volume, the story is never slow moving, and Saya -- clumsy but kind in her schoolgirl life, an interesting contrast to her sword-wielding warrior persona -- is an appealing character, as are the story's secondary characters. I'm sufficiently hooked on the character and intrigued by the story that I'm looking forward to volume 2.

Manga Art is By Ranmaru Kotone Character design and Story By Clamp and Production I.G By liz Im an admirer of CLAMP'S amazing work and I mistakenly thought the manga was from Clamp alone but after seeing and reading through a few pages I knew right away that this is not Clamps work. But i have to say that Kotone made a pretty good manga. In my opinion the manga felt a bit rushed and not enough depth. at the end of the book, calmp congratulates Katone for the work on Blood -C including a illustration of Saya (the main Character) in what i was hopping the manga would have looked. Still a good read and i would recommend this book for anyone who likes warrior, mystery and fun manga.

About the Author Peter Sarris was educated at St Albans School and Balliol College, Oxford, where he read Modern History, specialising in Byzantine and medieval topics. But maybe not perfect--definitely relies on macro level explanations for major events, which I fear is probably too simplistic. But, again, it's a short intro--not a dissertation. Great, modern prep for further reading on the subject.

Beauty and hardships in women scientists' lives By Zsuzsa FERGE Magdolna Hargittai generously lets us to dip into a treasure-chest of women scientists from four continents who are at the pinnacle of their fields. They are Nobel laureates, members of national academies, professors, university presidents and represent astronomy, entomology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, biomedical sciences, among many other fields. The author leaves drawing the general conclusions to her sociologist daughter while she herself prefers narrating captivating stories. A leading American university cannot accommodate the researcher who comes to work half an hour late because she has to get her four children ready for school every morning. In a former Soviet republic in the Caucasian region, a woman professor at home prepares and serves a meal, but is not supposed to join the festive table where guests sit with the male members of her family. We have been aware of the fact that “working women” suffer prejudices and discrimination, contempt and overshadowing in every country of the world even if to varying degrees. There is a struggle everywhere in that they have to create a balance between work and family life, raising their children. We learn from Magdi Hargittai’s narratives and conversations that this is no different even one-step away from the Nobel Prize. Magdi’s partners in conversation are exceptional talents who are so much devoted to their professions that they brave all hurdles and barriers and achieve outstanding results. The miracle is that they achieve recognition and appreciation even if often belatedly and far from the full extent they deserve. All this is coming from an internationally renowned research professor chemist and member of science academies, rather than from a combative feminist. For a decade and a half she conducted these factual and always emphatic interviews to show the beauties and difficulties of the lives of “women scientists.”

Don't put sex on the back burner, you can get burned that way By Denniger Bolton I can always tell I've read a good book because of the number of note & marks I make. There is so much I like about this book and so much humor by Rochelle Foxx, the author, and the quotable quotes, such as, "Revolutionizing your relationship begins in the heart, and the battle is won between the sheets." We swore, my partner and I, that we would not under any circumstance let our sex life get stale. We chose not to get married but still have a committed relationship, because we didn't want to be stuck in that rut that just about every married couple we know have fallen into. But if you don't work on it every day, the daily struggles of life just seem to get in the way. "The number one way to maintain that bond is through emotional and physical connection." I like what the author has to say about how men and women come at this subject and life differently and how sex is important because it unites our differences. "Sex is a doorway to love for men, love is a doorway to sex for women." So, thanks Rochelle for a fine book.

By Amazon Customer I have read 100's of books and articles about maintaining your sexual relationship in marriage and this book has one of the best sections of describing the differences in the way men and women relate to sex. I enjoyed that Rochelle approaches sex from the standpoint that both men and women desire and need it, despite approaching it from different angles. The only "beef" I have is that although the book was very good, the links at then end are high pressure sales to purchase additional material that you "have" to have. I didn't appreciate the high-pressure sales tactics at the links and unfortunately, it diminishes the trust I have in the author. I still gave the book 5 stars, although I'm tempted to take the stars away because of these links.

I work 8 hours a day, so I'm not able to give 100% attention to my husband. I now realized my mistakes after reading this book. I think the tips will become very helpful in maintaining a strong bond between me and my man. I also figured out my relationship stage, I now know how to add passion and intimacy in my married life, all thanks to Rachelle Fox.

Light, Comic, Colorful, & Educational By Marwa Moaz This is a light, comic, precious book that every American-Muslim can relate to.I actually bought one for myself, and one for a family with 2 young muslim girls. In a few years, I can see myself reading this as a bedtime story for my first grader.I would highly recommend this as a gift to non-Muslims as well. It has the potential to clear up many stereotypes, myths, and misconceptions about Islam.I am making it a point to see that this gets to public libraries and school libraries in my county. (Especially considering the fact that there are many Muslim families/students in the area.)We live in a diverse, colorful, beautiful country. It's time we understood and appreciated all the flavors that make up our American Melting Pot.

And it does address a lot of the common stereotypes, in a way that is neither overwhelming nor harsh. In fact, in a manner that is both comical and serious at the same time. And it is a book for people of all ages, i.e., both old and young can enjoy. And it is a book that both Muslims and certainly non-Muslims can benefit from, and hopefully make them better, and more sensitive and caring citizens. And it is a book that can be used as an "ice breaker" in those inter-faith dialogues, for example, between Muslims and Christians. Great job, Nusaybah and Khadija!

The Story of Eternia By Ghanima In this volume the fight against the Horde seems hopeless, until King Randor makes a radical decision to try and revive the Sorceress.Together Randor, Adam, Teela, Stratos, Moss Man and Battle Cat must fight their way through the rings of the Underworld to get to the heart of Eternia. Their success comes at a high price to Adam.The Story is good, but the illustrations of the first two parts of the book are awful, they're not neat and well colored, this detracts the quality of the book. And when the artist changes and you finally begin to enjoy the book it's finished. If you're a fan bear with the first 2/3 of the book and enjoy the rest.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Bring back the cartoon! By Sam Fett Picks up right where the crossover leaves off. I started reading this series out of pure nostalgia from my childhood. Watching Heman in the afternoons after school was part of my after school activities. Every time a new TPB comes out I think this is my last one but by the end of the collection I am pulled back into the story and anticipating the next issue. This one starts off weak due to the progression of the story. It seems to not really get anywhere and after the second issue in the collection the authors seem to realize this and rush ahead. An example: three of the masters are in danger and by the third issue they show up in the first panel in a ship they somehow got and then explain in a brief few panels. By this point I was unable to put it down. One thing I like about this series is they are not afraid to kill anyone so you don't know what to expect collection to collection. Though the stories could be better thought out and the character development needs a little work especially Heman himself it is a very engaging series that I will continue to buy. At least it makes me feel like a kid again watching my favorite afternoon cartoon.

About the Author Annie Finch is the author or editor of fifteen books of poetry, translation, and criticism. She has received the 2009 Robert Fitzgerald Award and fellowships from the Black Earth Institute and the Wesleyan Writers Conference. Finch's music, art, and theater collaborations include the opera Marina (American Opera Projects, 2003). Her work has been translated into numerous languages, and she has performed her poetry across the U.S. and Europe. She currently lives in Maine where she directs Stonecoast, the low-residency MFA program at the University of Southern Maine.Alexandra Oliver was born in Vancouver, Canada. Not Just the Oldies--But Maybe a Bit Too Many Newbies By Patrick Odaniel This book does just what it says--it breaks down its sections into various meters (accentual/trochaic/anapestic/dactylic/iambic/ballad meter and fourteeners/amphibrachic/dipodic/sapphics and alcaics/hendecasyllabics, cretics and lesser ionics) and then gives poetic examples of each. Although there are numerous chestnuts here demonstrating the various meters (such as an excerpt from The Song of Hiawatha) there are also quite a few contemporary poems thrown in to demonstrate that in these free-verse times formal verse has not given up the ghost (or the meter, as it were). So, crammed up with Coleridge and Herrick one will find the likes of James Fenton, Richard Wilbur and Cait Johnson--a refreshing change of pace.The one unfortunate flaw in this work is that the editor, Annie Finch, included five of her own workmanlike poems in the anthology (one may be forgiven --which, by the bye, is the sum total included by the Bard, William Shakespeare). Needless to say, Shakespeare may be slighted but he has nothing to fear from the likes of Ms. Finch

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Poetry for All Meters By J. Wiles Parker When they advertise this as pocket size, it really is that and a nice hardcover at that. It even has one of those handy bookmarks attached to the binding. But on to the content. The editors have put together a book that is meant to illustrate something that poetry seems have lost with the advent of free verse: a sense of meter and rhythm. Measure for Measure is handily organized into 10 different sections, each focusing on a specific meter and featuring a number of poems old to new written in that meter. I like that each section has an introduction explaining how the specific meter works. I also liked some poems, loved some, and felt a bit meh about others. The odd thing is that not all poems are complete, but just selections from certain works while others take up pages and pages and are the whole poem. The inconsistency is a bit odd at times but, I guess, keeps the book from being too thick and, thus, still pocket size. A good collection with an interesting organization for both poem lovers and poem novices to enjoy.Note: book received via Amazon Vine in exchange for review.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Engaging and Instructive By Thomas A. Holmes MEASURE FOR MEASURE offers a wide range of metered verse of various styles. The volume offers headnotes to describe the various types of meter and then offers a wide range of illustrative examples from poets well established in the literary canon as well as contemporary poets (I think Joshua Davis, born in 1985, is the newest). The volume contains familiar classic works as well as surprises, and the selections' subject matter ranges from proclamations of love to warfare to contemplation of mortality to how to make omelettes. It's an engaging and instructive volume, and, hardbound with an inbound ribboned bookmark, a thoughtful gift for an aspiring poet wishing to explore more than free verse. Recommended.

Schaaf This book contains a wealth of information on the politics, economics, social situation and corruption in India. There is a lot of information; but, found parts of the book tedious.The author is very knowledgeable. He was disturbed by the disparities of income; particularly between rural villages and urban areas.

Byrnes humoristic insites into the daily struggles of moral dilema is dynamically refreshing and a BLAST to read. My wife laughed so much that she fell off the couch!
