This book introduces a splendid animal world to the children with extremely short rhymes. It contains 45 fantastic "telltale" animal pictures, each of which matches a 20-syllable (four-line) poem stanza. First three stanzas for the group of animals (chick-hen-rooster) are as follows: Even though I am just a chick, I'll jump o'er brick. I'm not timid, Sky's the limit. We must respect the modest hen. Stays in a pen. Takes no school bus; Makes no big fuss. How handsome a rooster may look! Can't read a book! Loud he may crow; What does he know? The verses are "short, pithy, to the point," as one reviewer, a doctor, commented. As such, they should hold the attention of children with even the shortest attention spans. It also provides them with food for thought like assorted chocolates, which may whet their appetite for more learning! The following is a journalist's comments: "In this charming work in the genre of 'one-minute poems,' Vicki Lee captures the essence of animals in playful, onomatopoeic language. 'Animal Phonics for Children' is a modern take on Aesop's fables, exploring aspects of the human condition through parallels with animal behavior." -Rob Curran, contributor, The Wall Street Journal

From the author of the New York Times bestseller A Train in Winter comes the absorbing story of a French village that helped save thousands hunted by the Gestapo during World War II—told in full for the first time.

Le Chambon-sur-Lignon is a small village of scattered houses high in the mountains of the Ardèche, one of the most remote and inaccessible parts of Eastern France. During the Second World War, the inhabitants of this tiny mountain village and its parishes saved thousands wanted by the Gestapo: resisters, freemasons, communists, OSS and SOE agents, and Jews. Many of those they protected were orphaned children and babies whose parents had been deported to concentration camps.

With unprecedented access to newly opened archives in France, Britain, and Germany, and interviews with some of the villagers from the period who are still alive, Caroline Moorehead paints an inspiring portrait of courage and determination: of what was accomplished when a small group of people banded together to oppose their Nazi occupiers. A thrilling and atmospheric tale of silence and complicity, Village of Secrets reveals how every one of the inhabitants of Chambon remained silent in a country infamous for collaboration. Yet it is also a story about mythmaking, and the fallibility of memory.

A major contribution to WWII history, illustrated with black-and-white photos, Village of Secrets sets the record straight about the events in Chambon, and pays tribute to a group of heroic individuals, most of them women, for whom saving others became more important than their own lives.

Village of Secrets: Defying the Nazis in Vichy France (The Resistance Trilogy Book 2), by Caroline Moorehead

Review “[Moorehead] has done us the great service of unveiling the real lives behind the myth and in demonstrating that fallible human beings are far more interesting and dramatic figures than those who make up the stuff of legends.” (New York Times Book Review)“The definitive account… [an] unblinking exposé of resistance during the war.” (Wall Street Journal)“Le Chambon has long been mythologized in France for the actions of its inhabitants…. But, as this riveting history shows, the story is more complex... If the picture Moorhead paints is messier than the myth, this only serves to enhance the heroism of the main actors.” (The New Yorker)“Informative, comprehensive, and nuanced….Moorehead’s deeply researched, crisply written, and well-paced work will stand as the definitive account of a heroic, hazardous, and uplifting initiative during the German occupation.” (Publishers Weekly)“An exciting history of nearly forgotten individual and group courage. Highly recommended.” (Library Journal, starred review)“Moorehead not only recounts the heroics but also the everyday ordinariness of those involved, busting the embellished mythology while emphasizing the essential humanity of the entire operation.” (Booklist)“The vivid narrative takes on a cliffhanger quality….a rich, haunting account that leaves us with an uncomfortable question: What might have happened if more people had refused to go along?” (Minneapolis Star Tribune)“A wonderful story of the people of more than 20 communes who saved more refugees, proportionately, than anywhere else in France….Moorehead’s knowledge of the people, the area and the history make this one of the most engrossing survival stories of World War II.” (Kirkus)“Leaves one with a mixture of elation and great sadness. And it obliges the reader to stare at facts each of which is like the head of a Gorgon.” (New York Review of Books)“Harrowing and luminous…. Even this pessimist could not have imagined the death camps of the Third Reich, or the villainy of Adolf Hitler’s French collaborators. Their indecency has been exposed many times since the end of WWII, but rarely with the force and detail of Caroline Moorehead’s Village of Secrets.” (Moment)“The remote French village of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon…. has been the subject of numerous articles, books, and films. But Moorehead’s Village of Secrets is the best account I’ve seen in any medium. Emphatically not a debunking, this telling of the story is nonetheless deeply nuanced.” (Christianity Today)Praise for A Train in Winter: “By turns heartbreaking and inspiring.” (New York Times Book Review on A Train in Winter)“A moving novelistic portrait. . . . An inspiring and fascinating read.” (People, 3½ stars, on A Train in Winter)“A Train in Winter is the first complete account of these extraordinary women. . . . Moorehead’s group portrait offers an important new perspective not only on the suffering and courage of those in Auschwitz and other concentration camps, but of the complex French response to the German occupation. Careful research and sensitive retelling.” (Boston Sunday Globe on A Train in Winter)

From the Back Cover

High up in the mountains of the southern Massif Central in France lie tiny, remote villages united by a long and particular history. During the Second World War, the inhabitants of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon and its parishes saved thousands wanted by the Gestapo: resisters, Freemasons, communists, and, above all, Jews, many of them orphans whose parents had been deported to concentration camps. There were no informers, no denunciations, and no one broke ranks. After the war, Le Chambon became one of only two places in the world to be honored by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations.

Just why and how Le Chambon and its outlying villages came to save so many people has never fully been told. Drawing on unprecedented access to newly opened archives in France, Britain, and Germany, along with interviews documenting the testimony of surviving villagers, Caroline Moorehead paints an inspiring portrait of courage and determination: of what was accomplished when a small group of people banded together to oppose tyranny.

Liebmann This book is a scandal; it pretends to be a chronicle of history, which it is emphatically NOT. contains so many errors that it should not have been published at all in its present form.We Hanne (Hirsch) and Max Liebmann are featured in this book as survivors of the only deportation from Germany to France , prisoners of Camp de Gurs French internment camp as well as having been sheltered in Le Chambon sur Lignon. As we have told the publisher and author, we protest the misleading information about ourselves as well as our families and the general misinformation about this particular time period. People not familiar with the event of 1933 - 1945 will get a totally wrong impression. That such a book should even be considered for a literary book award in Britain is totally ludicrous.Just to cite a few of the many errors :Chapter 2; Moorehead states that in Camp de Gurs we ate dogs, cats and rats. There was not a single dog or cat in camp. Plenty of rats, but nobody ate them.Throughout the book Moorehead maligns Pasteur Trocme, a person of the highest moral and ethical integrity. recognized by Yad Vashem as "Righteous Gentile" In addition she denounces Prof. Hallie who with his book "Lest innocent blood be shed" put le Chambon on the map for the worldHanne and Max Liebmann .

Astonishingly inaccurate By Pierre Sauvage My parents were among the Jews who found shelter in the area of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, France, during the Holocaust--the subject of this astonishingly inaccurate book--and I had the good fortune to be born there at that time. I thus care deeply about the remarkable rescue mission that profoundly affected my life.It is thus dismaying that this account of those events preposterously asserts that the French Protestant (Huguenot) dimension of the rescue effort has been inflated into a myth, that the village's remarkable pastor can be plausibly charged with being a self-aggrandizing pathological liar, that nonviolence was only a small part of the story, that unnamed atheists and agnostics played an equal role in providing shelter, that indeed the religious beliefs of the rescuers deserve only passing mention... Incidentally, among the many dozens of misrepresentations and errors in this sloppy book are the very photograph on the cover: the reader has no way of knowing that the "Village of Secrets" portrayed is not Le Chambon!Furthermore, in the author's eagerness to be able to claim that she is, at last, setting "the record straight" and describing for the first time "what actually took place" in and around Le Chambon, she feels it necessary to go out of her way to malign the late Philip Hallie and me--who have told the story before her. In my case, she goes so far as to fabricate the utterly false allegation that key figures in Le Chambon's wartime events branded my well-received feature documentary on the subject, "Weapons of the Spirit," as nothing less than a "mutilation of historical truth." This is very mean-spirited fiction indeed! For more information, please see: [...]Pierre SauvagePresident, Chambon Foundation

I read it with great interest. However with her new book "Village of Secrets", Moorehead seriously damages her reputation as a reliable writer. To start with, her title should have been "Villages of Secrets"!Where is her historical scholarship? Who helped her with fact-checking for even simple details like the correct spelling of people she mentions? Why didn't she consult the internet? Her text is loaded with egregious errors and personal sarcastic judgments. Her distortions go from some historical facts to the most trivial little stories.Yes, Moorehead writes very well and her research is extensive judging by the unusually large list of books in her bibliography...yet her errors are the proof she did not read them all, including the most recent and important ones. Yes, she honors deserving people like Pastor Daniel Curtet or Simone Mairesse. But these people were recognized years ago! Strangely enough, one wonders whether she has a special contact with the world of the dead when she thanks for their interview Leon Eyraud who died in 1953 and Madame Marguerite Roussel who passed in 1996. There are always several sides to a story. It is regrettable and sad that Moorehead fell under the spell of a disgruntled crowd and some jealous people. The 12 Plateau Vivairais-Lignon villages and all the different types of rescuers, the nonviolent resistance and the armed resistance have not been forgotten in the small WWII museum that opened in LE Chambon - sur - Lignon in 2013. Yet this disgruntled group refused to join the project and did everything possible to kill it.. They even convinced Moorehead that the very capable Mayor Eliane WAuquiez-Motte who raised the funds and organized the professional planning deserved to be demeaned! You don't have to read Village of Secrets: go straight to the Foreword and especially the Afterword to get a general impression of the tone of the book. If Moorehead is absolutely right in praising important people such as Charles Guillon, Oscar Rozowsky and Marc Boegner ( all recognized years ago), she did not need to trash other important people such as the ethicist ( and not the historian) Philip Hallie who in 1979 put Le Chambon -sur-Lignon on the map, or the excellent documentary producer Pierre Sauvage who describes his personal story and the reason why he was allowed to live as a Jewish baby born during the Holocaust, and finally two of the several idealists and catalists of the effective nonviolent resistance, Pastors Edouard Theis and Andre Trocme.I ought to know: I am Trocme's daughter and I grew up In Le Chambon during WW II.I also had Caroline Moorehead as my house guest in the United States and I gladly let her interview me. She was friendly.I now understand better why total silence followed her visit...

For the first month of 2015, Jack Cameron woke up and wrote an original story for 15 Minutes. He then sent the story to artist Ossaín Ávila Cárdenas who then spent 15 minutes sketching an image based on that story. The results are the book equivalent of improvisational jazz. It's raw and fast. There are hits and misses and you never know what's going to happen next. The 34 stories included in this volume include all 31 stories originally presented at jackcameron.com along with two additional never before published stories and one in which Ossaín wrote the story and Jack illustrated it.

Best Consumed in Small Portions By J Howard Boyd This is a great little book to keep by the porcelain throne or toss in the glove box to pass the time waiting for the ferry or the drawbridge. Cameron's writing here ranges from the humorous to the macabre, romance to sci-fi, crime noir to psychological vignettes. Cardenas' drawings capture the essence of each story with the eye of a critical reader tinged with a sense of comic book whimsy. Together they give us a fun reading experience reminiscent of John Lennon's "In His Own Write".I originally read these as they were posted daily on Cameron's blog, and they work best as individual reading experiences. You'll want to read these in small bits, to give yourself the chance to savor the nuances of each story and illustration.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. just read one a day and enjoy each story for it's own uniqueness By William T. I agree with another reviewer's comment about reading these in small portions. In fact, just read one a day and enjoy each story for it's own uniqueness.I was inspired by this idea and attempted the same practice as Jack of writing one story a day and limiting myself to 15 minutes. When you do that you realize how difficult it is to come up with a coherent (not to mention compelling) short story in that time. That makes the quality of Jack's stories all the more impressive and, for this reader, enjoyable. And the art from Ossaín Ávila Cárdenas is just ridiculously fun and imaginative either complimenting the stories or bringing new life to them.Highly recommend!

This is the first biography devoted to the life of a remarkable young man who, in the words of Civil War historian Ezra Warner, “embarked upon a combat career which has few parallels in the annals of the army for gallantry, wounds sustained, and the obscurity into which he had lapsed a generation before his death.” But the story of General Martin Hardin provides more than a combat record―in fact comprises a walking tour through 1800s America, with its most costly war only a centerpiece. From his childhood in Illinois, where a slave girl implanted in him a fear of ghosts, to his attendance at West Point, along with other future luminaries, to his service on the frontier (where he took particular note of the bearing of the Cheyenne), Hardin’s life reveals the progress of a century. Abraham Lincoln was a close friend and political ally of Martin’s father, who died a hero in the Mexican War. The family were also relatives of Mary Todd. Made Brigadier General at age 27, Hardin fought with distinction at Malvern Hill, Second Manassas, Gettysburg, Grant’s Overland Campaign, and the July 1864 Rebel raid on Washington. He was wounded four times, nearly died on two occasions, and lost an arm during the war. On one occasion he was ambushed on a road by Mosby’s men, one of whom may have been Lincoln conspirator Lewis Paine. Hardin himself took part in the hunt for John Wilkes Booth after Lincoln’s assassination. In these pages we also learn the prominent role of General Hardin’s mother, who acted as her son’s lobbyist in the heady social world of wartime Washington. Over four years, she skillfully played upon her friendship with the President and the First Lady to advance her son‘s career. Although, as we see in these pages, his gallantry and leadership in combat sufficed enough to earn him renown, and in this book the under-sung exploits of a true 19th-century hero are finally revealed.REVIEWS "...recounts the story of both an amazing American and a pivotal period of history...The author’s diligent, deep research and his knack for storytelling vividly describes Hardin’s lifetime in its historical context....Despite all his experiences and accomplishments, when Hardin died at age 86 in St. Augustine, Fla., he was apparently largely forgotten. Still it seems remarkable that this riveting new book ranks as the first biography of this relatively unsunghero and exceptional American."Toy Soldier and Model Figure Magazine "A fascinating account of a truly remarkable young man; students of Civil War period history will find this particularly interesting, and the writing draws you into this young man's life with ease."Books Monthly Anyone who is interested in the Civil War will surely want to read Lincoln's Bold Lion, but locals will also enjoy the riveting tale that connected a decorated Civil War general to Henry Flagler's elite Southern tourist haven."St Augustine RegisterHigh marks should be awarded Huffstodt for producing a highly readable and engaging work. ...The photographs and illustrations are exceptional in their clarity and appeal,.. this is a useful book and a worthwhile read... It should be very appealing to a popular Civil War audience and those interested in Illinois’ role in that conflict. It is another useful tile in the grand mosaic of Civil War history that is ever unfolding. Civil War Monitor "contains magnificent tales of the Civil War and post Civil War Years. This wonderful biography brings its readers the turmoil of the American Civil War, the terrible deaths and destruction caused by the war, and the attempts to rebuild our country, and the heartache suffered by families divided by the war."Civil War Courier, May 2016"...chronicles the previously untold life of a soldier who explored the far west, lost an arm to a gunshot wound and knew Robert E Lee and George Armstrong Custer, among the giants of his time. Tallahassee (Fl.) Democrat Author James T. Huffstodt has brought Hardin back from the lengthy ranks of the overlooked and ignored Civil War generals. His fascinating new book, Lincoln's Bold Lion: The Life and Times of Brigadier General Martin Davis Hardin, breaks new ground into the life of the boyish brigadier and examines his relationship with the 16th president of the United States. Huffstodt, an Illinois native is an award-winning writer who currently lives in Tallahassee, Florida. He brings his ample research and writing skills to the forefront in this well-written, fast-paced biography...Huffstodt has brought General Hardin's memory back to life for the modern reader in this entertaining and comprehensive biography. It is an interesting narrative, replete with human interest stories and vignettes from Hardin's life, as well as from his father's and other family members. This is an excellent addition to the bookshelf of anyone interested in Union generals, as well as to those interested in reading about one of Lincoln's friendships that is not often discussed.York Daily Record‘…Huffstodt must be applauded for restoring Hardin to his rightful place as a heroic patriot … A highly recommended read.’History of War Magazine (April 2016) “LINCOLN’S BOLD LION sticks to facts, but also tells an astounding story of an Illinois native whose life intersects with those of Abraham Lincoln, Gens. Trust me; I've run into a lot of pedantic writing. James Huffstodt, however, knows his craft. His style is very readable. His choice of subject was inspired as well. I knew little of General Hardin's career other than his entry in "Generals in Blue." This man was the son of a friend of Lincoln's, a political ally and sometimes rival who died bravely in the Mexican War. Abraham Lincoln was well acquainted with Martin Hardin, taking an interest in the family after the death of John J. Hardin, and the connection worked to the young man's advantage. Hardin saw much action in the Eastern front, was wounded 4 times, once perhaps by Lewis Paine who later crossed his path again when Hardin helped hunt down the assassins of his mentor President Lincoln. Add to his war exploits the story of a very talented; sometimes dysfunctional family, and you have a very engrossing volume. Martin Davis Hardin has risen greatly in my estimation, and Mr. Huffstodt is to be thanked for his successful effort to raise his memory out of obscurity.

Jim Huffstodt has written an excellent biography of a little known Civil War general By Jack Spratt Jim Huffstodt has written an excellent biography of a little known Civil War general. But it is more than a biography. Reading this treasure I could see the development of our country during the 19th century through the eyes of a man who experienced many of its most important developments, from the opening of the West, the tragedy of the Civil War, to the lives of the elite at the turn of the century. This book brought me right into the picture, almost a virtual reality, of what it was like here from 100 to 160+ years ago. It should be on the shelves of every library and belongs in the essential collections of Civil War aficionados.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. From obscrutiy emerges Martin D. Hardin, Brigadier General By Linda Knetsch An unknown general in the Civil War is not new however having a solidly researched, intelligently written biography proving why he does not deserve the obscurity is. Author James Huffstodt has done his subject a great service and added to the overall knowledge of the Civil War, something not expected in these days of revisionism and rewriting of American history. It is well worth the reading and adds new facets to Lincoln's relation to his Army. It is also a study in influence and marriage in a very turbulent era. Married to a martyred hero of the Mexican War and then one of the most respected men of the New York bench, Hardin's mother carried significant clout in Washington. How she used that to carry forth her son's military career is as fascinating as the battles in which her brave son fought. A good read and well worth the effort.

Shame on me for not looking more closely, but shame on Linda Howard for not letting fans know this is a hard cover re-issue of an old paperback that cost about $5 back in the day. Most authors are up front about re-issues in their promotional material. It's in there, but right at the end. I missed it. Buy the old paperback and save yourself some money.

82 of 86 people found the following review helpful. Powerful writing, yet ultimately frustrating....... By Deborah MacGillivray Linda Howard asks the question: "Is there a limit to love, a point where it dies?" She believes there isn't and gives a very movingly works to make the case. I give this book 5 stars because of the powerfully move story (a wee bit dated and the whole book, since it was a series, is limited in scope).Howard does more in a small book, than any writer outside of Anne Stuart, and has proved consistently to be one of my favourite writers, though I have not really been wowed by the writing in the last few years. It seems JAK, Howard and Roberts are suffering from a formula writing, that is taking the glitter off their craft, and in a move to go more mainstream is causing them to forget the romance roots, and ultimately betraying the very fans that built their careers. What hurts this books, dating and limitations aside, is although you are carried along with her prose, the power of the relationship she creates, you get to the point where you just do not accept love forgives all. I am sorry, if the man I loved believe I was an embezzler, did not confront me with the evidence FIRST and give me a chance to prove my innocence, had me arrested without the first warning or preparation, refused to take my calls from jail or after I got out....well, I just don't see how I could forgive as easily as Howard's character did. And that in the end, it nearly cripples this book so much.Tessa Conway is working in accounting of Carter Engineering. The firm is having the losses of large revenue, they bring in Brett Rutland the corporation's top troubleshooter. Brett has the reputation of a pitbull, has little respect for women, uses them and leaves them without a care. He is an emotionless hunter that shows no pity, and he goes after Tessa with the cutting edge of wanting sex and information. But he falls in love with her (or so Howard would try to make you believe). But he resents this so much, nearly hates her in his own way for taking away his control, that when he finds evidence showing Tessa guilty of stealing thousands and thousands of dollars, that he has her arrested. No warning, no chance to prove her innocence, no support. She is arrested and booked. She tries to call him, believing her lover, the man she loves desperately, will make everything all right. He refuses to take her calls. After she gets out of jail, he still refuses to take her calls. She finally goes to see him at his hotel and he cruels says he only slept with her to gain information. This nearly destroys her. All in an effort to save his pride.Later, in an the middle of the night, he finally realises she could go to prison. He loves her (? sorry that is a big leap of faith for me at this point) and cannot stand to know the woman he loves will go to prison, so he goes to his boss and makes a deal to get the charges dropped. He tells the boss he will repay the money she stole himself, marry her. (nice of him!!). He arranges for the District Attorney to call her in, but she refuses to sign the agreement. She is innocent and will not sign a confession of guilt. It is only THEN he understands that she MIGHT be innocent. Now convinced she is innocent, he has the charges dropped, and suddenly moves in with her to take care of the fragile woman and hunt the real thief. She shows a moment of fury and lashes out with her fists. But that is about all she does. I am sorry, this really hurt this book. She makes the point that she still loves him. Well, I love so I know you will forgive a lot in your life....but you do not forgive this easily.Still, with all its faults, this is a powerfully written book. Howard weaves a spell that pulls you along, making you almost believe it...till you take a breath and reality check comes along.I HIGHLY recommend it for the simple fact it is writing craft at it is highest peak, it is truly emotional...your heart will pound when she is arrested and finally comes to grips with the fact her lover is the one pressing charges. Just sorry, that the confined treatment of the series romance, pushed Howard to take the easy road in the solution.

64 of 66 people found the following review helpful. old re-release By Catherine I started to read this and per the style, flipped to the copyright page: this is a re-release of a 1985 book, and while I find some of Howard's older titles okay, the weak heroine/improbably hard male main character grated.

Ecological roots of our toubled time are deeper than its economic manifestations. Anguished posterity will look back on this 21st century as “the bottleneck century.” Bottleneck: Humanity’s Impending Impasse was written to show how and why three converging trends have put humankind in much deeper peril than is generally acknowledged. First, there are many more of us inhabiting this planet than it can sustain. Second, technological advances of recent centuries have made gigantic and prodigal our per capita resource appetites and our per capita environmental impacts. Third, even though, as the symbol-using species, we humans conceivably could do better at anticipating future circumstances and planning ahead, our evolutionary heritage together with unanticipated dysfunctions of modern division of labor have kept us too preoccupied with short-term concerns. People today are dependent upon a fantastically intricate web of exchange relations (“the market”). Even when functioning normally—and not in a collapsed condition, as currently—this system of relations has a serious and pervasive dehumanizing effect not adequately discerned by economists nor sociologists. Recognition of and adequate adaptation to the deteriorating ecological context of human life has been impeded. Human societies (even our own) are almost certainly going to act in ways that will make an inevitably difficult future unnecessarily worse. Factors analyzed in this book have made people seriously averse to the kind and extent of cooperation our difficult future will require. Together with the basic trio of disturbing trends—humans having become so numerous, so ravenous, and so short-sighted—this has made the nature of today’s human prospect far more dire than most policymakers dare admit. It tempts even the wisest and most civic-minded to seek or promote “remedial” policies that will worsen the real predicament.

58 of 62 people found the following review helpful. Sequel to a masterpiece By acerbas This book is the sequel to Overshoot, written by Catton almost 30 years ago. As another reviewer mentioned, Overshoot should be read first, inasmuch as it is foundational in terms of understanding Bottleneck. Overshoot is a masterpiece; the most important book I have ever read (and I do a lot of reading) and one which truly altered the way in which I perceive the world. In comparison, Bottleneck falls somewhat short. It is rambling, prolix and pedantic; far from an easy read. That is why I can only award it 4 stars. Perhaps we might attribute some of its shortcomings to the fact that the author is now 83 years old. Nevertheless, it does build upon Overshoot and contains many valuable observations and insights, particularly with respect to the implications for developing public policy. Unfortunately, it is pretty much a given that the people who should be paying closest attention to Catton's recommendations, namely the politicians (and the people who pull their strings) are the ones who most benefit from the status quo and therefore are least likely to relinquish their outmoded understandings of how our little spaceship works. The human population has already greatly surpassed the sustainable long-term carrying capacity of the planet and short of Draconian measures a massive die-off is inevitable. Mamas don't let your kids have babies. In the immortal words of Tonio K. [...]

26 of 27 people found the following review helpful. Worthy Successor to Overshoot By Philip P. Ardery Previous reviewers have recommended that prospective readers of Bottleneck start with Catton's Overshoot (1980). I agree, but I also affirm that a light acquaintance with Overshoot, easily achieved by online reading at Amazon and other sites, supplies sufficient foundation for full engagement with Bottleneck.Bottleneck distills 30 years of Catton's efforts to better understand why Americans (and others) have not acted on knowledge whose application could have softened the impact of our overshooting Earth's carrying capacity. The book analyzes with fresh insights the interplay of labor specialization, money, and language in the modern era, revealing how we have arrived almost inevitably at "humanity's impending impasse" (the book's subtitle). I cannot adequately summarize that analysis here, but please know that it exposes unsustainable structural features in our behaviors and institutions too deep to be altered by our current systems of social organization and governance.Even after continued drawdown forces humankind through our 21st century ecological bottleneck, there's no guarantee that survivors can or will avoid repeating our mistakes. That's a major reason why Catton spent years researching and writing this book. I can imagine that as he forswore an easy retirement, dedicating his energies to this project, he may have tacked to his office wall for inspiration Diderot's remark from the foreword to the 1765 edition of the French Encyclopedia: "Suppose that a revolution, whose seeds have sprouted in some remote region of the earth or may be germinating in the very center of a civilized country, should burst forth, destroy the cities, scatter the nations, and bring back ignorance and darkness. All will not be lost if a single complete edition of this work survives."My hyperbolic imagining greatly exaggerates Catton's own more modest declaration of intent. He writes, his two small great-grandsons alive in his thoughts, "I hope by the time they become great-grandfathers themselves, their generation will be so conspicuously more enlightened than mine was and our forebears were that the world population of bottleneck survivors will have evolved social systems better able to be circumspect in their use of their planet and its vulnerable biosphere. If readers of this book come to share similar hopes, and contribute to instilling them in their descendants, my reasons for writing will have been justified."

Technically spot-on, to the point and relentless in its presentation. Overshoot is a 'must-read' for any informed human being. This book 'Bottleneck' rambles, digresses on everything from baseball minutea, a detailed history of 20th century sociology and sociologists, to children's fables and his family life. Most of us are too pressed for time to filter the useful information in this book from the extensive irrelevant digressions. Much of this, quite frankly, is probably due to the writer's advanced age at the time that this book was written, and poor editing. It is a catch-all college professor's memoirs jumbled around a serious subject.Everything in 'Bottleneck' that is useful is a rehash of what the writer gave us in 'Overshoot'. Your time and money are much better spent pursuing that work. 'Overshoot' should be re-released under the title 'Bottleneck' and this effort should be scrapped. And yes, I have read both books. My hat is off to this writer. He has left behind a great work. But this book is not it.

A book of great tips and insights By Effrosyni Moschoudi Having devoured self-help, motivational and esoteric philosophy books for the last 30 years, and as it takes one to know one, reading this book made it evident first of all that the author is very widely read. Her advice is solid, wise, and her tips will indeed prove very helpful to anyone trying to find peace in today’s chaotic world.Karra uses direct speech and jargon-free language to address her reader. She takes a little step at a time to introduce them to the power of thought, the incredible powers of the mind itself, and the tools available for relaxation, self-awareness and self-empowerment.This is a wonderful guide that would serve as an excellent way to start for anyone who does not have much knowledge on the aforementioned subjects. However, this is not a detailed account of any subject in particular, and I presume this was the author’s purpose, to speak a little about everything in this volume, rather than get into details about universal laws, the powers of the subconscious mind etc. The only downside to this approach is that to me, the read felt rather exhilarating because the subject kept changing, and so, at the end of the book, it felt like a lot had been said but nothing in depth. For that reason, I’d love to see future books from this author where perhaps she would elaborate on specific subjects. Also, I’d advise to add book titles for further reading in the back matter of the book or at the end of each chapter. This way, the reader could have a handy recommendation on any aspect of self-improvement that they wish to explore further. All in all, a great introduction to cosmic laws, the powers of positive thinking, mind control, and the like. I would recommend it to anyone interested to explore these areas.Note: I was offered a free copy by the author in return for an honest review.

The actual heroine and hero aren't Whitney and Sloane, they're Kris and Jared. And of course, it's a different story. I purchased this because I got curious after reading the description so I'm a bit disappointed and am left wondering what the title of that novel really is. I've decided to keep this purchase though because it turned out to be another good story. Anyway, I hope they change the description of this title pronto. Most readers aren't as forgiving as I am.

Beauty (Fated Encounters), by Laurie Roma

About the Author Laurie Roma lives in Chicago and mainly writes contemporary, romantic suspense, and sci-fi romance. She has always loved immersing herself in a good book and now enjoys the pleasure of creating her own. She can usually be found tapping away on her keyboard, creating worlds for her characters while she listens to music. Of course her playlist depends on her mood...but then again, so does her writing. An avid reader of the romance genre, nothing bothers her more than annoying characters. Seriously, who wants a happy ending for someone that pisses you off? She loves tough alpha-male heroes and strong heroines that have brains as well as beauty. Her novels are filled with both passionate romance and down and dirty lust-driven interludes, as she believes both are essential to a good love story. She loves to hear from her readers and can be reached at laurieromabooks@gmail.com.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Awesome Romance By Smut Lover I loved this story. We have Drake who has the reputation for being standoffish, and condescending. But there is more than meets they eye. There is a story behind his behavior. I loved the way he was towards Tessa. How he was smitten from the beginning. He just wanted to get to know her,and be with her. Even if it was in odd roundabout way, but that's because he didn't know what to do. This book was already going to get a good rating. But automatic five star when I read this:"she loved him, and he was going to claim her before she changed her mind...."And when he said this. "This —what we have between us— will never be over. You belong to me. You have since I met you."This book was awesome, between the interactions between Tessa and Drake, his thoughts, and the banter between Drake and his friends. I hope the other guys get stories.

The settings were flushed out and the characters really played well off each other so much that after i was done reading I went to look for more in the series. Sadly to say there is no follow ups as of yet, but I can see how other individuals in the series could pick up and run with another story line. Would definitely recommend as its a quick, fun contemporary read. Enjoy!

Tessa is a strong and confident woman who is more than capable of handling the antisocial hero. It really does show that everyone has a story and you shouldn't judge a person just on hearsay. I recommend it to anyone who has ever been on the outside looking in. There is someone out there just waiting to love you....you beast...happy reading.
