This is the first biography devoted to the life of a remarkable young man who, in the words of Civil War historian Ezra Warner, “embarked upon a combat career which has few parallels in the annals of the army for gallantry, wounds sustained, and the obscurity into which he had lapsed a generation before his death.” But the story of General Martin Hardin provides more than a combat record―in fact comprises a walking tour through 1800s America, with its most costly war only a centerpiece. From his childhood in Illinois, where a slave girl implanted in him a fear of ghosts, to his attendance at West Point, along with other future luminaries, to his service on the frontier (where he took particular note of the bearing of the Cheyenne), Hardin’s life reveals the progress of a century. Abraham Lincoln was a close friend and political ally of Martin’s father, who died a hero in the Mexican War. The family were also relatives of Mary Todd. Made Brigadier General at age 27, Hardin fought with distinction at Malvern Hill, Second Manassas, Gettysburg, Grant’s Overland Campaign, and the July 1864 Rebel raid on Washington. He was wounded four times, nearly died on two occasions, and lost an arm during the war. On one occasion he was ambushed on a road by Mosby’s men, one of whom may have been Lincoln conspirator Lewis Paine. Hardin himself took part in the hunt for John Wilkes Booth after Lincoln’s assassination. In these pages we also learn the prominent role of General Hardin’s mother, who acted as her son’s lobbyist in the heady social world of wartime Washington. Over four years, she skillfully played upon her friendship with the President and the First Lady to advance her son‘s career. Although, as we see in these pages, his gallantry and leadership in combat sufficed enough to earn him renown, and in this book the under-sung exploits of a true 19th-century hero are finally revealed.REVIEWS "...recounts the story of both an amazing American and a pivotal period of history...The author’s diligent, deep research and his knack for storytelling vividly describes Hardin’s lifetime in its historical context....Despite all his experiences and accomplishments, when Hardin died at age 86 in St. Augustine, Fla., he was apparently largely forgotten. Still it seems remarkable that this riveting new book ranks as the first biography of this relatively unsunghero and exceptional American."Toy Soldier and Model Figure Magazine "A fascinating account of a truly remarkable young man; students of Civil War period history will find this particularly interesting, and the writing draws you into this young man's life with ease."Books Monthly Anyone who is interested in the Civil War will surely want to read Lincoln's Bold Lion, but locals will also enjoy the riveting tale that connected a decorated Civil War general to Henry Flagler's elite Southern tourist haven."St Augustine RegisterHigh marks should be awarded Huffstodt for producing a highly readable and engaging work. ...The photographs and illustrations are exceptional in their clarity and appeal,.. this is a useful book and a worthwhile read... Trust me; I've run into a lot of pedantic writing. James Huffstodt, however, knows his craft. His style is very readable. His choice of subject was inspired as well. I knew little of General Hardin's career other than his entry in "Generals in Blue." This man was the son of a friend of Lincoln's, a political ally and sometimes rival who died bravely in the Mexican War. Abraham Lincoln was well acquainted with Martin Hardin, taking an interest in the family after the death of John J. Hardin, and the connection worked to the young man's advantage. Hardin saw much action in the Eastern front, was wounded 4 times, once perhaps by Lewis Paine who later crossed his path again when Hardin helped hunt down the assassins of his mentor President Lincoln. Add to his war exploits the story of a very talented; sometimes dysfunctional family, and you have a very engrossing volume. Martin Davis Hardin has risen greatly in my estimation, and Mr. Huffstodt is to be thanked for his successful effort to raise his memory out of obscurity.

Jim Huffstodt has written an excellent biography of a little known Civil War general By Jack Spratt Jim Huffstodt has written an excellent biography of a little known Civil War general. But it is more than a biography. Reading this treasure I could see the development of our country during the 19th century through the eyes of a man who experienced many of its most important developments, from the opening of the West, the tragedy of the Civil War, to the lives of the elite at the turn of the century. This book brought me right into the picture, almost a virtual reality, of what it was like here from 100 to 160+ years ago. It should be on the shelves of every library and belongs in the essential collections of Civil War aficionados.

Hardin, Brigadier General By Linda Knetsch An unknown general in the Civil War is not new however having a solidly researched, intelligently written biography proving why he does not deserve the obscurity is. Author James Huffstodt has done his subject a great service and added to the overall knowledge of the Civil War, something not expected in these days of revisionism and rewriting of American history. It is well worth the reading and adds new facets to Lincoln's relation to his Army. It is also a study in influence and marriage in a very turbulent era. Married to a martyred hero of the Mexican War and then one of the most respected men of the New York bench, Hardin's mother carried significant clout in Washington. How she used that to carry forth her son's military career is as fascinating as the battles in which her brave son fought. A good read and well worth the effort.
