The German Army began the invasion of the USSR late June 1941. My father, as all able bodied men in the Ukraine, was drafted into the Russian Army, even though he was a Jew. My mother was left to fend for herself and her aging parents and teenage sister in Kiev, a city besieged by the Nazis. She found passage for herself and small family on a cattle car headed toward Siberia. They spent six weeks on that train and my mother gave birth to me just as they approached the Ural Mountains. This is MY story of a child surviving the Holocaust.; Siberia, Kiev, East Berlin, West Berlin, dozens of Displaced Persons camps throughout Germany, and finally arriving to New York City July, 1949. I was one of the lucky ones.

In Russia a "lucky" few managed to escape the Nazis by fleeing to Siberia. But families were torn apart, loved ones lost, homes bombed to rubble. Children had no childhood. This is the story of one such child and her family, her odyssey from Siberia to the USA. It is poignant history--and never more so than when Lili sees the buildings of New York for the first time at age 8 or 9. She had never seen a city of intact buildings--only bombed out shells. This is the Holocaust from a different but moving perspective. Madeleine Appel

It was an authentic voice of a child as she lives through some of the most historic times in our history. While not glossing over the most serious aspects of the Holocaust, it humanizes the experience through the eyes of a young girl. Still, you know that the attitudes that come through of appreciation and understanding are informed by someone who must now be a very wise woman. I can't wait to see what happens next!R.W. Davis

By Susan Myers Siberian Yankee is a moving story of the results of war on a young Jewish family and their struggle to survive and rebuild their lives. This book tells the lasting impressions left on a child and the daily memories that still today are part of her childhood memories. Lili tells her journey through life as a child, as a daughter, as a Jew and as a Holocaust survivor.

Since the first day she could remember, Kelly had been picked on by identical twins, Alex and Asher. They followed her through every school year, tormenting her as much as they could until they were re-zoned for different high schools. Kelly was ecstatic that she would no longer see them at school and looked forward to a happy last four years. During the summer, Kelly's mom tells her that she is dating a new man and they're taking a family vacation. As it turned out, the man her mother was dating was the father of the evil twins. When their parents married her mother, the twins picked on her more, constantly teasing their new stepsister. Three days after her eighteenth birthday, and on Homecoming night, an event happens that changes everything between them and Kelly learns that there's more to the twins than meets the eye. By Donna feibusch I enjoyed reading Dearest Stepbrother: Double Trouble 4 (Book Four of Four), all about Kelly the step-sister and her twin stepbrothers Asher & Alex. The siblings are now at college in their own three bedroom condo off campus that their dad bought for them. The author wrote a interesting story that has spanned the entire four book series, and the characters brought the books to life. If you like reading about taboo relationships that make you hot & steamy and then very wet read this series. I've enjoyed reading all the escapades the sib's have gotten into and I can't wait to read Double Trouble after college! Enjoy reading!

I think the idea of them telling their parents about this is ridiculous. I can't wait to see if Alex gets interested in another girl and tries to bring her to the party

I recommend this book to anyone who wants a fresh perspective on the struggles that are currently present in the African American community or for those who simple want a honest "playing dominos kinda of discussion" conversation about some current hot topics present in today's black culture.

"Churchill and Roosevelt: The Big Sleepover at the White House" is a book for those who enjoy history and political intrigue but prefer that the method of delivery entertain and inform. It’s also written for those who enjoy reading about leadership and its applications. Many readers may not have known that Winston Churchill came to visit Franklin Roosevelt two weeks after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Roosevelt insisted that Winston sleep in the White House. The two men had much in common—more than they realized, as the reader will discover. There are plenty of other surprises along the way—a chance encounter with Adolph Hitler, a fishing expedition, a shared mentor, a favorite movie, a movie producer spy, Commander Ian Fleming’s visit to the Oval Office, and canine diplomacy to name but a few. During their time together, Churchill and Roosevelt shared many private moments as they forged a bond of friendship, trust, and cooperation that enabled them to defeat their countries’ common enemies. How their relationship evolved is dramatized and personified in this book. Most of the narrative is based on documentation, but what went on behind the view of the public eye is subject to the imagination. The author fleshes out the story by coloring it with conversations that may have occurred over the course of three weeks but that are not necessarily provable. Lastly, the writer sets out to humanize these two epic leaders of their time and perhaps the century. He reveals not only their fears and tears but also their joys, humor, passions, temperaments, and schemes. He attempts to “break into their minds” as the two men join together intent on saving the Western world. The author is a Proud Supporter of the Fallen Warriors Memorial in Houston (www.fallenwarriorstexas.org) and America’s National Churchill Museum in Fulton, Missouri (www.nationalchurchillmuseum.org)

It illuminates a moment in world history and the unique relationship between Roosevelt and Churchill by focusing on a specific moment in time, namely, the three weeks Churchill spent at the White House in 1941-1942. I would not at all be surprised if this book is adapted into a play. Wilson has opened up a fascinating page in our history!

23 of 24 people found the following review helpful. The State of Consumption (Minus Real Alternatives) By J.W.K Although reading them can be a bit depressing, annual Worldwatch reports are always worth while, because unlike any other institute out there, the WWI seeks a comprehensive understanding of humanity's impact on the environment. This year, the format has changed a little. Instead of providing the usual litany of statistics outlining the global eco-crisis (fisheries collapsing, forests shrinking, rangelands deteriorating, soils eroding, species obliterated, temperatures rising, rivers running dry, water tables falling, ozone depletion expanding, more destructive storms brewing, polar ice caps melting, sea level rising, etc.), the focus is consumption - which makes sense, because if are reading this, you are more than likely a consumer, and if you are a consumer, you are a fundamental part of the problem. As usual, the scholarship is excellent. Unfortunately, it lacks serious discussion of alternatives for individuals seeking to do more than reduce, reuse, recycle and support green energy initiatives. In other words, as with all State of the World reports, it is only useful as a scholarly reference - or, to put it another way, not very useful. If you have already come to believe there is in fact a fundamental problem with the way industrial civilization works, I would recommend one of four books, depending on your outlook: (1) WHAT GOES UP, by Derrick Jensen (due for release sometime in 2005) (2) PERMACUTLURE: Principles & Pathways Beyond Sustainability, by David Holmgren (3) RADICAL SIMPLICITY: Small Footprints on a Finite Planet or (4) ECOVILLAGE LIVING: Restoring the Earth and Her People, by Hildur Jackson Karen Svensson. The first book, which will no doubt be as insightful and transformative as Jensen's earlier works, addresses the issue of bringing down civilization. The second book utilizes system's theory and design science in an effort empower ordinary people to create their own permanent and sustainable communities. The third book, rather consumer-oriented and reformist in nature, offers radical advice on reducing your ecological footprint. The fourth book profiles various ecovillages all over the world and provides lots of practical advice for people seeking to join or start their own. If you are like me, you will no doubt read them all - and then some - but if you are just looking for a global eco-almanac on consumer trends, the State of the World 2004 will do. Of particular import were the sections on computers and cell phones, which detail the human health (cancers, miscarriages and birth defects) and environmental impacts (ground, air and water pollution) of the two industries. I've got blood on my hands for just posting this review.Essential annual reading.j.w.k.

LIN Although I like the extended reading list provided by angry-bear and agree that SOTW 2004 provides mostly facts than solutions, I wouldn't say that it is disappointing. On the contrary, this is what the series is all about. Facts are the food for thoughts, and I dare to say that every reader of SOTW has her/his own ways of facing the challenge. The reasons are simple. The dire facts prompt us to think, to act, rather than simply to sit back in distress. In case you haven't heard about other publications by Worldwatch Institute, please visit [...]

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Reason and responsibility By Rebecca A. Chaney By focusing on consumerism, this book addresses the practices of our current society and the impacts those practices will have on future societies. I found it provides easily comprehended summaries of factual data that allows its readers to consider the issues of global consumption from their own individual perspective and from their particular societal perspective as well.Throughout the book examples are given of individual and community practices that affect consumerism and global health for better or worse. Examples of consumer trends which illustrate how individual members of societies of abundance are willing to make choices based on their perceptions of global health (such as sharing cars or buying organic food) are included, as are examples of communities, companies, and governments that are attempting to move toward more sustainable production policies. The scope of the book is broad, well-indexed, and documented enabling opportunities for follow up research on material of interest. Additionally, the writers reach for an inclusive approach to personal and global well-being by emphasizing the inherent sociability of the human species and the need for solutions that are not just environmentally responsible but are globally equitable as well.

It's not just that we see a prisoner hanged; it's that a panel is devoted to him soiling himself at the moment of death. That's prelude to finding out that a group of criminals, as well as the title detective, are all marked by barcodes on the whites of their eyes and all are being investigated by an execution-happy justice minister. The case this time around involves a supposedly dead mass murderer playing deadly pranks (in a style reminiscent of Batman's Joker). As the number of crimes mount, the detective attempts to rescue his partner from a tanker-truck bombing. The varied personalities and plots can be confusing, but those who've been carefully following the series since the start will find their attention rewarded. The book has the fast-paced action of a movie thriller, exploring the boundaries of the human mind through extreme actions. Panels are light on text and designed so skillfully that the reader can take in events as quickly as they can turn the page. Adult comics readers looking for a manga they can sink their teeth into will find it here. (Dec.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This is an absolutely addictive read and is impossible to put down. The plot continues the conspiracy from the first two volumes regarding the bar-coded eyes and the secret criminal orginization with its tendrils in both the crime world as well as in the government. The lab follows a criminal who is using a series of patsys to pull of macabre, dark and sadistic crimes for fun, all as a revenge plot connected to the main character. This one has a great fiery ending! This volume was not as well written as 1 and 2, how ever it was still great. I definately recommned it. I have noticed that each series gets increasingly less dark from the first one, but the story still remains great.

Neal Love this thing, wacky though it is, but hate like the depressed with no sleep hate, the American publisher for wimping out on this series. It's dark and not for kids. It's not for everyone either. Not always easy to follow the art or the story line, but who doesn't enjoy a challenge? Keep going folks. Come ON! Don't quit on us now! Why, I'd recommend folks not buy any copy of this excellent manga if they're going to be frustrated by the fact it quits at 10 or 11 or issue 13 is it? No more. Sad. Pitiful. But if you do buy, prepare ye, it's NOT for the squeamish.

Operation Hump, the first major battle between the U.S. Army and the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces, took place November 5-9, 1965, in South Vietnam's War Zone D. Known as "The Hump," it would change the nature of the war, escalating it from a hit-and-run guerrilla conflict to a bloody contest between Communist main force units and American commands of battalion size or larger.

This memoir of an Operation Hump survivor begins with the sequence of events leading up to the battle, from the French defeat at Dien Bien Phu in 1954. Drawing on official Army documents and the recollections of fellow combatants, the author not only describes the battle in detail but explains the war's basis in fabrications at the highest levels of the U.S. government. His experiences with PTSD after the war and his eventual return to Vietnam in the 1990s are included.

The book offers great detail on what took place during HUMP By Paul Rutowski Operation HUMP was one of those early Vietnam battles that went fairly unrecognized by the masses of the media and the general public. The book offers great detail on what took place during HUMP, how it got to that point and the ramifications after - For me as an avid follower of the HUMP - I was hoping for more as not every detail was provided because the author has attempted to collect as much information as possible for inclusion on an event that took place almost 50 years ago. Those who survived HUMP have been going through PTSD and often do not wish to discuss nor reflect on what transpired that day, which further complicates matters. But all in all, this is the best source on HUMP other than government and officer reports. I'm hoping more information will come forward with this book release and the 50 year anniversary of the HUMP next month. A must read for any military buff and those affected by Vietnam.

I can attest to much of what you will find in this account as I was the Company Commander of B Company. What I found most interesting was how the author captured the absolute confusion of battle by telling the story through the eyes of so many soldiers involved in the battle. It's not only good history but a tribute to so many brave/courageous men determined to defeat a vastly numerically superior force. It also tells of the authors fight with PTSD, a fight many of our soldiers are confronted with long after the battle. If you want to understand not only what battle is all about but also what our solders are all about this book does it.

Every Citizen Should Read This Book By Jmcd This is an amazing book that chronicles the life and recollections of a soldier in one of the seminal battles of the Viet Nam War. The Hump is an engrossing real life memoir of a man called to duty who served his country with honor. This book should be mandatory reading for all Americans to understand what it means when we send our young men and women, America's hope for the future, to war.

A flaneur is a stroller, a loiterer, someone who ambles through city streets in search of adventure and fulfillment. Edmund White, who lived in Paris for sixteen years, wanders through the streets and avenues and along the quays, into parts of Paris virtually unknown to visitors and indeed to many Parisians. In the hands of the learned White, a walk through Paris is both a tour of its lush, sometimes prurient history, and an evocation of the city's spirit. The Flaneur leads us to bookshops and boutiques, monuments and palaces, giving us a glimpse the inner human drama. Along the way we learn everything from the latest debates among French lawmakers to the juicy details of Colette's life.

The Flaneur: A Stroll through the Paradoxes of Paris (Writer and the City), by Edmund White

Amazon.com Review If a place is best known by its particulars, then Edmund White is an expert on Paris. Fortunately, he's generous with his secrets: he reveals a Paris not found in any other guide in this first book in the Writer and the City series. White's Paris is seen on foot, as a flâneur, a stroller who aimlessly loses himself in a crowd, going wherever curiosity leads him and collecting impressions along the way. Paris is the perfect city for the flâneur, as every quartier is beautiful and full of rich and surprising delights. But this is no typical tour of monuments and museums; it is much more intimate and surprising. As a flâneur of Paris for 16 years, White knows where to find the very best of everything--silver, sheets, plum slivovitz. He can tell you where to get Tex-Mex surrounded by a dance rehearsal hall, where to rent an entire castle for a party, or even where to get Skippy peanut butter. He eschews the pearl-gray city built by Napoleon and roams the places where the real vitality lives, the teaming quartiers inhabited by Arabs and Asians and Africans, the strange corners, the markets where you can find absolutely anything in this city that accommodates all tastes. White's Paris is a place rich in history with a passion for novelty and distractions. So a walk through the Jewish ghetto leads to the history of the little-known Musée Nissim de Camondo, with its impressive collection of Louis XV and Louis XVI furniture, created by a family of Jewish bankers ultimately killed in the Holocaust. White shares other favorite and obscure museums, such as the Hôtel du Lauzun, where writers like Balzac and Charles Baudelaire and the painter Edouard Manet met for long evenings of music and hashish-induced hallucinations. Reminiscences in Montmartre reach back to the thriving jazz culture created by African Americans in the years between the world wars and include stories about Josephine Baker, Richard Wright, and James Baldwin. While White may ignore Notre Dame, he has fascinating tidbits to share about kings and queens and their heirs who still fight for the throne. The variety of Paris, White remarks, is matched by the voraciousness and passion of its people. With his own remarkable flair, he reveals a thriving and alluring city where tourists rarely tread. --Lesley Reed

From Publishers Weekly The first in Bloomsbury's new, "occasional series" The Writer and the City, White's (The Married Man) collection of impressions stands in marked contrast to many travel books published today. The organizing principle is the combined force of White's perception, imagination, frame of reference and voice. He moves seamlessly from an eyeglasses museum to the Hotel de Lauzun--home to Baudelaire as a young man--and a discussion of the poet's dandyism and struggle with syphilis. White includes personal memories and anecdotes of gay Paris--in both senses of the phrase--past and present. "To be gay and cruise is perhaps an extension of the flƒneur's very essence, or at least its most successful application," even as the flƒneur's wandering is "meant to be useless." White describes his own favorite cruising spots as well as those of Louis XIV's homosexual brother, and notes that Napoleon officially decriminalized homosexuality. Other gems include a visit to the street where Colette lay bedridden with arthritis and spied on Cocteau across the way, and a discussion of the expatriation of African-Americans like Josephine Baker (Cocteau said of her, "Eroticism has found a style") and Richard Wright (who wrote of Paris, "There is such an absence of race hate that it seems a little unreal"). White's charming book is for literati, voyeurs and aesthetes, and for travelers who love familiar terrain from a different viewpoint.

From Library Journal This is the first volume of a new series by Bloomsbury in which the world's novelists reveal the secrets of the city they know best. White (A Boy's Own Story), a gay writer who has lived in Paris for 16 years, has named this collection of essays after the aimless stroller celebrated by the poet Baudelaire, and Paris is certainly ideal for such explorations. White reflects on African Americans who took Paris by storm between the wars, French Jews, small and bizarre museums such as the Gustave Moreau Museum, relics from a royalist France, the gay scene, and more. A gifted writer who notices the little details missed by other guidebooks like the ivy-covered wall above the Seine that resembles the side of a galleon White is richly informed, and his evocative writing should appeal to both armchair travelers and visitors to Paris. "THE PARADOXES OF PARIS" By MOVIE MAVEN I hope that the people at Bloomsbury Press continue to employ wise and opinionated writers who can tell us about their favorite cities and the personal secrets to be found in them. This first, by Edmund White, is a winner.White takes us into HIS Paris, a city he has lived in for many, many years. As an American, the city will naturally feel different to him than it might to a native. White's writing is, as always, graceful and beautiful. His assessment of Colette, his desription of "nationalism" among the Jews of Paris, and, certainly, his thoughts on Homosexuality and specifically HIV in this city are important and fascinating. I also especially enjoyed the short appendix on "further reading."It surprised me that a few of the other reviewers were taken aback that White would spend so much of his time on gay Parisian life. This has always been a subject for White...in his novels, his memoirs and in his non-fiction works. Hire Julia Child to write about Paris and we're bound to get a book filled with thoughts on food. By the way, a "flaneur," we are told, is a person who walks, strolls for the purpose of walking or strolling...not with any "ulterior" motive. RECOMMENDED

He has created the first (in what seems to be a series) guided tour of a great city which focuses on the idiosyncrases, particular flavor, befuddling history and ultimate addicting charm of Paris. This is as close as it gets to walking along side an established scholar and join him in the role of "Flaneur" - one who meanders without prejudice through the backways of a great city, just for the sake of observing and reflecting. There is more French (rather Parisian) history in this little tome than multivolume sets that mold on library shelves. But we find out only the things that interest White (he makes it all so poignant). Sections of the city and the book are devoted to the peculiar Parisian take on monarchism vs royalsim vs republicanism vs socialism. White cleverly introduces anecdotes that at first suggest neighborhood gossip but later are referenced to available writing that documents these strange truths. There is an entertaining history of African Americans in Paris, immigrants of all nationalities as they are today and were in history, a hilariously confused lineage of the royalty of France, and a frightening examination of why AIDS is so rampant in the city. White strolls, cruises, pauses, reflects, delights in the smells and times of day when the light is best in certain areas, and provides a staggering list of the countless museums devoted to every idea imaginable while castigating city design choices and current architecture meant to make the city logical. The format of this book is very small which means it would fit into the back pocket of any tourist visiting the City of Light who longs for much more insight than pocket guides from tour companies can even suggest. White writes as well in books like this and his bios of Genet, Proust etc as he does in his inimitable novels. This is a little treasure of a book!

38 of 45 people found the following review helpful. Reader as outsider? By Keyah White gives some elegantly written historical insights into the monuments of Paris. The compact format of this book makes it a handy companion on a trip to the City of Light. I must admit with some consternation, however, that my attention began to flag as White seemed to focus more and more narrowly on the gay perspective. I couldn't escape the feeling that as we meandered along the Paris streets, there was a conversation taking place in which I was an unwelcome hanger-on. My problem, I guess. This would be a completely delightful book for those more interested in the gay point of view.

Some graphic novels wither in plot and presentation, over time loosing their zeal, but not Lenore! Volume after volume, she manages to pertain a precarious balance on the tight rope between morbid and charmingly humorous. The Sock Sucking Bandit collects Mook’s tale along with several others, including ones about, talking furniture, human snow shovels, Snorasaurus’, and cannibalistic basement dwellers.

Tales of The Brothers Three: The Sock Sucking Bandit! (Volume 3), by Joshua Wayne Hauke

About the Author Joshua Hauke, creator of the Brothers Three, has been writing and illustrating comics since 2009. His career in illustration, however, almost started earlier (not as an artist, but rather as the paper) when his father threatened to play connect-the-dots with the freckles on his face if he didn’t finish his vegetables. And while he still doesn’t love vegetables, Joshua will gladly put away a whole plate to avoid having his face scribbled on. He now safely resides in California (approximately 1,838 miles away from his father and his magic marker), with his newly minted wife, and their robot vacuum cleaner, Otis Aloysius.

Not only has he figured out his technique both in art and writing, he's also grown the storytelling into it's own unique flavor. The Bros 3 universe is very distinct, you know a bros. 3 story when you see one! All the elements are there; misadventure, hijinks, wonderful monsters! They have a level of thoughtfulness and polish that shows a talented creator who truly cares about his characters and his audience. The stories have gotten more complex, but not at the expense of the reader, and really bring the world to life! The personalities of the characters have really come into their own and continue to grow as the boys interact. 'The Basement Time Forgot' and 'The Toy Chest of Certain Doom' are two favorite stories of myself and my niece and nephew. I highly recommend the Bros 3. books for kids and adults alike!

  • At long last, Courtney Crumrin Tales returns... in full color! Though the Witches and Warlocks of Hillsborough keep to themselves under Ravenna’s Law, there are outliers who are a danger to others. The Anti-Sorcery Society, headed by mortal Horace Crisp, seeks to destroy these individuals, and Aloysius Crumrin, an eager young man, offers his assistance — keeping his magical ancestry to himself, of course. But he doesn't count on Alice Crisp, Horace’s tenacious daughter, accompanying him on missions, or on trusting her with his secret... or on falling in love. Which proves more dangerous than anything when Horace becomes his enemy.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Just as much of a treat as fans of Courtney could expect with a great story and fantastic art By Nicola Mansfield I was really shocked when I found out a 7th volume was out as I thought 6 was the final volume and it was, sort of. Tales of a Warlock can be looked at as more of a prequel than a continuation. This volume takes us back to the days when Uncle Aloysius is a young man and even then working against the rogues practicing dark witchcraft. Just as much of a treat as fans of Courtney could expect with a great story and fantastic art. A unique plot that takes fans back to Aloysius' secret past but this would also make a great starting point for new fans as it doesn't even introduce Courtney to the series yet. Fantastic addition to the series!

I love everything about it, the world, the characters, the art and the plotlines. This volume is no different. In this volume we get a background story for Aloysius Crumrin. As a young man he engages with a group of sorcerer hunters in an attempt to find out what they know about his group and along the way he is able to actually help them do away with some of the rogue sorcerers that are out there.I enjoyed this volume very much, I liked Uncle Al in the Crumrin series and it was nice to learn more about his life before Courtney arrived. If you like the Crumrin series this is a great addition to it.

Sarah also learns that someone is trying to kill them all, one by one. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Love it By Karen Enjoyed it. Love the show, basically the first few times we see Helena in the show but with a little backstory.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Before the angel fell... By Allison Vaughn I love the new backstory we get from the comics! Love the tv series and can't wait to see what happens next! I look forward to more insights into the clones' earlier days and how they got to the point where we meet them on the tv series. It was great to see Helena before she was completely broken by her training. We see the dark, relentless nature of Tomas' training methods and how he molded Helena into the assassin his people wanted her to be.
