The German Army began the invasion of the USSR late June 1941. My father, as all able bodied men in the Ukraine, was drafted into the Russian Army, even though he was a Jew. My mother was left to fend for herself and her aging parents and teenage sister in Kiev, a city besieged by the Nazis. She found passage for herself and small family on a cattle car headed toward Siberia. They spent six weeks on that train and my mother gave birth to me just as they approached the Ural Mountains. This is MY story of a child surviving the Holocaust.; Siberia, Kiev, East Berlin, West Berlin, dozens of Displaced Persons camps throughout Germany, and finally arriving to New York City July, 1949. I was one of the lucky ones.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. loved ones lost By Madeleine G. Appel Not all the horrors of the Holocaust were in the concentration camps. In Russia a "lucky" few managed to escape the Nazis by fleeing to Siberia. But families were torn apart, loved ones lost, homes bombed to rubble. Children had no childhood. This is the story of one such child and her family, her odyssey from Siberia to the USA. It is poignant history--and never more so than when Lili sees the buildings of New York for the first time at age 8 or 9. She had never seen a city of intact buildings--only bombed out shells. This is the Holocaust from a different but moving perspective. Madeleine Appel

It was an authentic voice of a child as she lives through some of the most historic times in our history. While not glossing over the most serious aspects of the Holocaust, it humanizes the experience through the eyes of a young girl. Still, you know that the attitudes that come through of appreciation and understanding are informed by someone who must now be a very wise woman. I can't wait to see what happens next!R.W. Davis

By Susan Myers Siberian Yankee is a moving story of the results of war on a young Jewish family and their struggle to survive and rebuild their lives. This book tells the lasting impressions left on a child and the daily memories that still today are part of her childhood memories. Lili tells her journey through life as a child, as a daughter, as a Jew and as a Holocaust survivor.
