Modern Slavery: The Margins of Freedom, by Julia O'Connell Davidson

Review

"Passionately written, brilliantly researched and replete with powerfully logical analysis, Julia O'Connell book should be required reading for anyone claiming leadership in today's 'new abolitionist movement.' Modern Slavery and the Margins of Freedom establishes beyond dispute that today's self-described antislavery movement fails to address the fundamental realities of what slavery actually is and what is driving its rapid expansion all over the globe. Why, the book asks, do today's abolitionists focus so narrowly on certain forms of enslavement while utterly ignoring so many other equally heinous practices? The deeply disturbing answers to this question demand that today's abolitionists reexamine our beliefs and revise our basic assumptions." - James Brewer Stewart, Founder, Historians Against Slavery and James Wallace Professor of History Emeritus, Macalester College, USA

"In this boldly provocative and challenging book, Julia O'Connell Davidson asks searching questions of contemporary initiatives to end slavery and the mobilization of the idea of 'modern slavery'. 'Modern slavery', she argues, is less a clearly definable phenomenon than a site of political contestation over, among other things, what it means to be human. O'Connell Davidson rigorously calls into question the definitions being used by NGOs and other actors and asks whose interests are being served by the new abolitionist campaigns. The clarity of exposition and the humanity of the argument leave no doubt as to her own political commitments to justice in this latest moral battleground over issues of global inequality.' - Gurminder K. Bhambra, Professor of Sociology, University of Warwick, UK and author of Rethinking Modernity and Connected Sociologies

"In this powerful critique of the 'new abolitionists' and their limited vision of the meanings of slavery and freedom, Julia O'Connell Davidson draws on the rich literature on transatlantic slavery together with ethnographic and interview research on forms of labour defined by some as 'modern slavery' to challenge new orthodoxies. Ranging from discussions of the specificity of chattel labour in the New World to child migrants and sex-workers in today's global economy, she raises vital questions as to what it means to be a person, what it means to be free? 'Modern slavery', she convincingly demonstrates, should be thought of as a zone of political contestation rather than a thing, urgently in need of debate and analysis. Modern Slavery: the Margins of Freedom is a vital contribution to that debate.' - Catherine Hall, Professor of Modern British Social and Cultural History, UCL, UK

'Modern Slavery: The Margins of Freedom is a compelling and timely book. In this richly contextualized volume, Julia O'Connell Davidson charts the fraught stakes of framing the fight against human trafficking as a global struggle against "modern slavery". She delivers an incisive critique of the various actors, from NGOs to state governments, their political investments, and dominant discourses driving the popular "new abolitionist" advocacy campaigns. By connecting "modern slavery" to the historical forms of servitude that preceded it, Davidson's provocative study explores the liberal ideologies that underlie these public campaigns and fuel the unprecedented expansion of immigration detention and border policing in western democratic states. Modern Slavery is an essential read for anyone who wants to understand the complex discursive histories of the anti-trafficking movement.'- Edlie L. Wong, University of Maryland, US

In the decades before the Civil War, the small number of slaves who managed to escape bondage almost always made their way northward along the secret routes and safe havens known as the Underground Railroad. Offering a new perspective on this standard narrative, Matthew Clavin recovers the story of fugitive slaves who sought freedom by―paradoxically―sojourning deeper into the American South toward an unlikely destination: the small seaport of Pensacola, Florida.

Geographically and culturally, across decades of rule by a succession of powers―Spain, Great Britain, and the United States―Pensacola occupied an isolated position on the margins of antebellum Southern society. Yet as neighboring Gulf Coast seaports like New Orleans experienced rapid population growth and economic development based on racial slavery, Pensacola became known for something else: as an enclave of diverse, free peoples of European, African, and Native American descent. Farmers, laborers, mechanics, soldiers, and sailors learned to cooperate across racial lines and possessed no vested interest in maintaining slavery or white supremacy. Clavin examines how Pensacola’s reputation as a gateway to freedom grew in the minds of slaves and slaveowners, and how it became a beacon for fugitives who found northern routes to liberation inaccessible.

The interracial resistance to slavery that thrived in Pensacola in the years before the Civil War, Clavin contends, would play a role in demolishing the foundations of Southern slavery when that fateful conflict arrived.

Aiming for Pensacola: Fugitive Slaves on the Atlantic and Southern Frontiers, by Matthew J. Clavin

Review During the past fifty years, historians have gained an understanding of slave escape networks that existed in the United States prior to the Civil War. Usually the historians focus on the slaves who went from the Upper South into the North and Canada. By centering on events in and around Florida’s Gulf-Coast port city of Pensacola, Clavin convincingly demonstrates the similar importance of slave escape on the South’s southern periphery. In the process he provides striking examples of interracial cooperation within an international Atlantic context. (Stanley Harrold, author of Border War: Fighting over Slavery before the Civil War)Just when some have declared the idea of slave resistance passé, Aiming for Pensacola brilliantly illustrates the political sophistication of the enslaved in taking advantage of social geography, abolitionist allies, and military conflicts to become architects of their own freedom. Clavin does nothing short of redefining the history of the underground railroad and spells out its forgotten emancipatory legacy. (Manisha Sinha, author of The Counterrevolution of Slavery)Clavin traces Pensacola’s unique status as a pseudo-refuge from the colonial period through the Civil War. In addition to a groundbreaking perspective, the book offers a lively, engaging narrative that makes it appropriate for general readers as well as scholars. (S. C. Hyde Choice 2016-04-01)

About the Author Matthew J. Clavin is Associate Professor of History at the University of Houston.

By bobeddyuu This book is a must for those who think of he pre-war "south" as a simple society of slaves and their masters. The role of "free blacks" (40% of Pensacola's population at one point) and of slaves who were hired out as workers in skilled trades is especially revealing. Should have a much wider readership. Very well written with a fine bibliography.

Anne, a sensible school teacher, is bridesmaid in her friend Carol's wedding and meets the groom's cousin Sheik Rafik Harun. Although Sheik Rafik normally prefers sophisticated women he's instantly attracted to Annie. Carol, worried that her innocent friend Annie will be hurt by Sheik Rafik, warns him Anne's not his type. Anne overhears this conversation and tries to avoid him realizing her friend may be right. After taking too many antihistamines at the wedding she makes the mistake of having champagne at the reception and starts to feel ill. Sheik Rafik sees Anne isn't feeling well, thinks she's drunk and sympathetically offers to drive Anne home but she passes out in the car before telling him where to go. Rather than embarrass her by taking her back to the reception unconscious he takes her to his hotel to sleep it off. As he walks through the hotel lobby several people going to one of the restaurants notice him carrying Annie to the elevators and recognize both of them. (This becomes a problem for Anne later since she works for a prestigious school that has strict moral standards for their teachers.)Once Sheik Rafik has Anne in his room he decides to remove her uncomfortable looking bridesmaid dress and puts one of his shirts on her instead. Too tired to return to the party knowing he has an early morning meeting he decides to go to sleep. In the morning he rushes to get ready, leaves Annie money for a taxi & goes to work with Annie still fast asleep in the bed. When Annie wakes up in a strange hotel room in a strange man's shirt she's nearly hysterical. To make matters worse once she discovers who she stayed with last night she realizes her purse, housekeys, money & shoes are not in the hotel room.Anne knows where Sheik Rafik works so she takes a taxi to his office wearing the bridesmaid dress from the previous night but barefoot. She goes to his office & gets her belongings but get into a fight when Sheik Rafik refuses to tell her what happened between them. He thinks it's funny telling her they slept together since he doesn't know she's a virgin. Anne storms out of the office and takes a taxi home. In the meantime, Sheik Rafik's father begins pressuring him to get married. Rafik's brother suggests the best way out of getting married is to have a long engagement with Anne as a set up so their parents won't try to arrange a marriage with anyone. Rafik decides to suggest it to her but doesn't think she'll agree.Anne goes to school to prepare for the new school year and finds out several of the parents were at the hotel and saw her with Sheik Rafik. She finds out her job is in jeopardy if she can't produce Sheik Rafik as her fiancee. When he meets with her to suggest it she decides to do it if he'll help her keep her job by posing as her fiancee at a staff party at her school. Once his family learns about the engagement they begin planning the wedding and things begin to slip out their control. As they begin spending time together they begin to fall in love and in the end they do get married. The way they end up spending time together is really interesting. A very enjoyable story with fun characters that you really get to know.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great series. By J COFFMAN This story starts of where the last one "Fit for a sheik" left of, at Tarik & Carolyn's wedding. The hero, Rafik is one of the groomsmen & cousin of Tarik's. Anne is Carolyn's best friend & bridesmaid. While at the reception Anne is taken ill, only Rafik thinks she's drunk. Rafik takes her home, only they never made it. Anne has collapsed in Rafik's car & he doesn't know where she lives. He does the only thing he can & that is take her back to his hotel to sleep it of.Anne is spotted by parents of her pupils being carried unconsious up to Rafik's room. This causes problems for her with the headmistress & school board. Anne has no choice but to to produce Rafik as her fiance. Rafik himself has a need for a fiance to keep his parents of his back about marrying. When his parents meet Anne they are enchanted with her. His father immediately anounces their engagement. Much to Rafik & Anne's dismay. What can they do now? How can they let Rafik's family know it's all a sham?

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Lots of sheiks By A Customer Back Cover description: Anne Sheridan would never have missed her best friend's wedding. It was the flowers she couldn't handle. And after taking one too many antihistamines, the allergy-ridden bridesmaid found herself being carried off by dashing groomsman Sheik Rafik Haun. Imagine her surprise when she woke up in the notorious bachelor's bed. Honor kept Rafik from taking advantage of the drowsy beauty in his care. But now desperation had him making an even bolder request-that she pose as his fiancee! Only until he convinced his marriage-minded parents that he was better off a bachelor. Or until the pretty Miss Seridan found her way into his hard heart...It wasn't a bad story, just not very believable. How many sheiks does the middle east have? Are there any left over there? The heroine was OK, the hero was marginal. That he didn't seem to realize that carrying a comatose woman through a hotel lobby wouldn't cause a problem was strange. He also goes to work the next day and can't see pink shoes and a handbag on the car seat? The story moves along and the sexual tension developes nicely. I will try another of the author's books to see if this is typical of her style or not.

An extraordinary memoir by a North Korean woman who defied the government to keep her family alive.

Born in the 1970s, Lucia Jang grew up in a common, rural North Korean household―her parents worked hard, she bowed to a photo of Kim Il-Sung every night, and the family scraped by on rationed rice and a small garden. However, there is nothing common about Jang. She is a woman of great emotional depth, courage, and resilience.

Happy to serve her country, Jang worked in a factory as a young woman. There, a man she thought was courting her raped her. Forced to marry him when she found herself pregnant, she continued to be abused by him. She managed to convince her family to let her return home, only to have her in-laws and parents sell her son without her knowledge for 300 won and two bars of soap. They had not wanted another mouth to feed.

By now it was the beginning of the famine of the 1990s that resulted in more than one million deaths. Driven by starvation―her family’s as well as her own―Jang illegally crossed the river to better-off China to trade goods. She was caught and imprisoned twice, pregnant the second time. She knew that, to keep the child, she had to leave North Korea. In a dramatic escape, she was smuggled with her newborn to China, fled to Mongolia under gunfire, and finally found refuge in South Korea before eventually settling in Canada.

With so few accounts by North Korean women and those from its rural areas, Jang's fascinating memoir helps us understand the lives of those many others who have no way to make their voices known.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Horror, hope, and the survival of the human spirit By Garrett Zecker This harrowing, first-person account of their struggles escaping from the oppressive North Korean regime in the face of the change from Un to Il is absolutely astonishing in its scope and shameless emotional resonance. What I have found in many accounts of the sheltered hermit kingdom is the technical specifications of its workhouses, the sheer horrific numbers of the starving and oppressed, and the bizarre antics of their government. What rarely escapes, due to fear of the punishment of the families of those who have emigrated, are the individual first-person stories and narratives that are so much more meaningful and gravitational than any data point could ever be.What I garnered from this book is the brutality, the sheer technical aspects of how people manage to escape, and what it looks like when they attempt it on an emotional, and familial level. It sounds absolutely awful, as does the actual inside narrative of the prisons and how babies are routinely used to oil the failing machine that is the government. With so many people starving, with such humiliation and utter despair, there is no question that the end of this regime will come from within in the form of a revolution not unlike that which took down the oppressive and French government in 1792, opening up a new era of health, prosperity, and fraternity. For now, however, the horrors and crimes against the people will continue until there is an organized resistance. Those crimes outlined in this book are nauseating and horrible, especially considering that the only way out is the equally deplorable human trafficking that the Chinese are having difficulty stopping. It is no wonder that the oral histories are the ones that are most punishable in terms of getting out and written down... They may very well hold the power for lasting recognition of the horrors this dictatorship has perpetrated for the last sixty years. I hope more voices make it out, and among one another. An excellent book that was translated by the Canadian naturalization lawyer of the protagonist, this letter to her son to be read in the future is a testament to the survival of the human spirit in the most appalling conditions.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. heartbreaking By maggs If you've ever felt depressed or hopeless you should read this book and feel better because your "problems" will seem like blessings in comparison with what Jang endured. It is amazing, gut wrenching, emotionally grueling yet inspirational memoir. My prayers for the people of North Korea, especially the women and children. God bless Jang for sharing her own arduous journey.

Often referred to as a workhorse the PzKpfw IV is certainly not a glamorous beast but from North Africa to the Eastern front it was a ubiquitous fixture on the various battlefields of WWII.Using archive and original photographs to lay down a visual time line for this Panzer's development, the book takes a historical overview of this strategically important tank. Description and definition of all the different Ausfs are included both within the introduction and captions. It applies recent findings to the analysis and commentary of the photographs. These include the authors own research into unit specific stowage and factory production differences, which feature for the first time within the context of a monograph looking at the vehicles overall evolution. Information that should be invaluable to both historians and modelers.REVIEWS Peko Publishing have added yet another top shelf selection of reference material for modelers and armor enthusiasts alike. The quality and assortment of photographs used in this volume is only second to the informative captions accompanying each selection. This book is a great reference for modelers looking to accurize their next Panzer IV build while getting ideas for that next diorama. This volume will certainly not disappoint and is a 'must have' in any armor enthusiasts' reference libraryBoresight, Journal of AMPS

The dialogue is well written, the layout fast-paced and interesting. Whilst I feel like the facial expressions were at time, a little inconsistent, this is a medium I am personally new to and it did not detract from the overall tale.Definitely an interesting one to follow and I think the most telling thing from this novel is that when I’d finished, I paused, and then immediately began rereading it. I look forward to seeing the next installment!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Cool Read ! By Robert Wow what a great read. The graphic and the texts are super. I enjoyed reading the book and am going to reread it again. It is innovative and exciting and it gives us to think...The interaction between the people and the action behind the scenes are great to imagine. The books sucks you in and I can't wait for more...

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The Tech Zombie Apocalypse By Val There is a very strange feel to this book. At first learning how to use the auto expansion function for reading the graphic novel was a little bit frustrating. But once I figured that out it was easy to follow. The art style changes about a 1/3 of the way through and goes from a graphic novel/comic book style to this photorealistic style which works well with the story. The main character, Dr. Jamie Baxter, undergoes a transformation at this point which seems to be why the artist changed style. I’m looking forward to the next one. The only suggestions I would have is that when they layout the next one they use bigger sections of the graphics. I know you can’t give the same feel as a full size graphic novel or a pdf. But if you break the images into larger chunks it will help those who are technically challenged.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. So good! By Jude ~4/5This series is just so much fun. I just love it. It’s developing very slowly when it comes to real plot and romance, but the characters are so great. I can’t resist picking this series up as every volume is released.A lot happens in this volume, and I hadn’t realized how short the chapters were before. Raku has a bad spirit connected to him at one point and the girls freak out, then the girls get drunk and hit on him. There’s a chapter for changing seat assignments, which gets redone over and over and over again, hilarious every time. Marika gets a job, where she works hard to keep it. And then Valentine’s Day happens, and all the girls freak out over what kind of chocolate to give. There is time for each of the girls to get some focus, for their own crush on Raku, and even for Ruri and Shu. There’s equal opportunity for all of them, and they’re all so unique that it’s fun to see. This is the best harem series, and each volume is hilarious and cute. I want more plot, but each piece of plot or character development we get is worth it.[More of my reviews are available on my blog, Geeky Reading, to which there's a link on my profile.]

Beautiful art By Parka [[VIDEOID:8b29d585c8247e03ebfe74b760734de2]]VOX is the artbook of Italian illustrator and designer Matteo De Longis. It's a 88-page paperback artbook that comes with a yellow slipcase. It's square format measuring about 16+ inches diagonally so it's quite a large book. One of the highlights is the specific use of colours. The cover uses a yellow that's quite striking -- very likely a Pantone colour. That colour in its pure form is repeated on the inside pages and really adds at extra punch to the illustrations, such as when it's used to colour the audio cables. The two other strong colours are the magenta and cyan, again very possibly Pantone because of their intensity. The artworks are beautiful and huge. The colour scheme seems to be variations of print colours cyan, magenta an yellow. The art is actually drawing in comic style with outlines. There's a soft touch though as the outlines aren't exactly black. Overall, there's this nice tinted feel to the illustrations. The illustrations inside are music and rock inspired. The opening pages have comic panels of a rock chick in plugging in her electric guitar and playing against a bright yellow background while the speakers are spewing out cyan audio waves. You'll see a lot of rock chicks in the book actually. Most seem to be carrying electric guitars. That or electric machine gun guitars. There are also astronauts, guitars with wings, birds with transistor for heads, retro cars and even cityscapes. In one piece, there's this giant woman laying down among the skyscrapers of a city. In separate panels, you can see a military chopper flying over her big eye, another panel is a ground up shot of her fingers among buildings. The last panel is the typical city-dwellers-walking-along-a-street scene with tall buildings in the background and even further back we see her breast and nipple rising like a mountain. That's the juxtaposition. Then there's also the huge naked female torso submarine. The perspective used for that piece is masterful. This is a fantastic artbook. Highly recommended.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

She lies to save a mother even after the so called hero just told her he had to pay that mother of hers to take her back. I mean I get she has a good heart & doesn't wish any harm on her but to put yourself on a limb to save her from what she brought upon herself is just plain stupid. Than the H treats her like a disposable wipe telling her over & over again up until 80% of the book that he only wants sex and does not want her to get the wrong idea like she did 5 yrs ago & fall in love with him. Because she was not good enough for him then and is not any more worthy of him now. Tells her not to get her hopes up with holding him back with a baby cause its just not going to happen divorce is unavoidable. The h still wants to have his kid and has a breakdown when she feels she might not be pregos. Top it all off & I just couldn't read any further, the H tells the h that if she hadn't caught him with that other girl that day 5 yrs ago he definitely would have slept with her no regrets.I get that he didn't want to have sex with her since she was only 16yrs old!!! But than he's rich why Marry her ? & not just offer het his financial support & stay away from her without the bond of matrimony. The excuse of wanting to save her from her family's wrath was a weak excuse. If he was really worried about her he did not have to marry her and keep giving her hopes instead of feeding her infatuation with him. I think it disturbing that he actually married her and kept her tied to him until she grew up for he's personal use. Just nothing heroic about him.I have read just about all of Ms.Grahams books and have liked if not loved all of them. But I just could not stomache this one.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Unrequited Love!!! By Glaidene's reads This book tells the story of a girl who fell in love with a young man while still a teenager and married him when she was 16. He chose not to have an intimate relation ship with her at the time. She caught him in a comprimising position and the story gets better from there. Lynne Graham is one of my favorite authors so her books are special to me.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Was in the mood for angst and this satisfied By Vanessa Frankie and Santino were forced to marry because of possible damage to her reputation and the fact that her paternal grandfather believed in the old ways. The story opens showing that her mother and Frankie don't seem very close and Frankie knows this. Frankie manages to get reeled back into Santino's orbit due to a work related incident. Santino, you know he orchestrated that, takes advantage and tells her that if she wishes to save her mother from possible jail time she will give him the wedding night he never had. Seems that Santino didn't bed his 16 year old forced bride, but instead got caught in an clinch w/ a family friend OW - caught by Frankie I might add!He apparently has discovered some interesting things while Frankie was out of commission and he believes that she has lied to him, so let the blackmailing begin! Santino doesn't like liars - need to make that clear here. I could NOT understand why this guy didn't know more than he did, and why he couldn't have fleshed out the truth better since he is a great businessman. But alas he doesn't!Santino knew things about her mother and he covered that up (lied) and I wondered why Frankie protected mommy dearest? He even lied about prosecuting her mother and he does it several times. However, he continues to accuse Frankie of lying and in one instance she possibly did because she didn't tell him of her innocence - but really he wouldn't have believed her anyway. Then he finds out the truth and says she deserved the pain - POW. Santino is telling her what he won't be (ruled by passion) and what he doesn't like (liars), yet he is exactly that and he does do what he doesn't like.I can't grasp the concept that Santino has been estranged from his mother for years and then it's all happy because Frankie's defense of him. Oh and how could she not possibly know of his family? If they are so big there would have been mention of them in some papers at some time. Also Santino seemed to want to make an issue about the age gap for a bit, but that just felt wrong because it didn't bother him when he was thinking about other things. They seem to be getting along then she starts acting childish and tells him to go. Suddenly he is away and on a business conference - wouldn't he have known about that before? Couldn't he have mentioned it before just going like that? He returns w/ the OW that she had caught him w/ before. Frankie thinks at one point near the end that she couldn't imagine Santino becoming intimate w/ that type of woman - yet by his own admission it was headed exactly there! Frankie calls him on one of his lies and the excuses begin. This OW became convenient in the story and it didn't make a lot of sense. I'm not sure how this OW deserved better as she KNEW he was married when she was tossing herself around. Her presence on the plane seems too convenient as well. He allowed her to go on believing that he had been unfaithful as she allowed him to believe that she wasn't a virgin and not once thinks to say YOU LIED Santino and YOU deserve what you get?! But he was such a man vocalizing things that he wished he was or was not and then showing by actions the opposite.

It's a good book, well worth reading if you have an interest in Medieval England.Jennifer Cameron-Smith

It really transports you back in time to the period so much different from ours. I loved every single page. This book covers the early medieval period, from 1050 to 1300, which is great, because this period is not very often covered. Every aspect of life - religion, education clothing and many more - is described in impressive detail here. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in history.

Lots of information, but couldn't get into it By Don Rasbury The author was obviously knowledgeable about the subject but I guess the approach to topics was at too high an elevation for me. Also, some topics were covered in depth that didn't interest me to the level of detail provided.

Wells This collection of 70 biographies of follows the lives of intellectual, military, and political figures in the decades that followed the Civil War. Each chapter is organized thematically. The chapter titled "Unexpected Muse", for example, includes biographies of poet Walt Whitman and cartoonist Thomas Nast. The thematic organization makes the book more readable because personalities who operated in similar fields are located near one another. However, this organization scheme also makes the book less useful as a reference book since the people are not collected in alphabetical order. Each biography is about 5 pages long, and each entry is written to introduce new or young adult historians to these personalities. The entries are written as narratives and provide a good overview of the post war biographies of the people included in the book. Since this book focuses on the post war years, the information is richer and deeper than what would be found in an online encyclopedia. But the brevity of entries also means that there is a lot left out of the story as well.I would recommend this book to historians beginning their interest the civil war and reconstruction period. Teenagers and young adults who want to become familiar with some of the many personalities involved in the post war period will also profit from this book (plus I would think that these biographies could plant the seeds for many deeper studies and exciting projects)

By Narut Ujnat This book is published by the National Geographic Society, which should give an indication as to the quality and certain cast as to the writer and publication. This book, written by James Robertson, a long-time historian and Civil War historian, is about after the Civil War. First thing that should be known is this book is not a conventional narrative you might be used to, but is rather about 70 figures, known and unknown, in a short summary manner. That is, if you are looking for a long expository narrative about the aftermath of the Civil War, this will not make you happy. But, as I stated above, if you have read and paged through other National Geographic publications, you are probably familiar with the format. Each summary is about 3-5 pages and you get a broad sense of how the Civil War reached and touched so many lives. The book is made by lots of nice pictures and illustrations. The book is endlessly interesting and is a compelling read to be sure. Just understand it isn't a straight line narrative. On the other hand, in the exploration of life after the war, you do get a sense for the affect the war had on these individuals and their accomplishments.Understanding the above, this is a great book for what it is, and therefore I loved it.

There is nothing more miraculous, profound, and comforting, than to meet a fellow pilgrim whose company, on the road that we call life ,leaves you inspired, challenged, enlightened, and encouraged. Most of us will not travel the world, or have the extensive work and life experiences that Dr. Gray has had, but his sharing of his, will allow you to experience everything vicariously through his journal pages. This is our Father's World and HE has the whole world in HIS hands. Experience this through "Measuring My Days"!! "Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man that trusteth in him." PS. 34:8 Life is too short to miss this fantastic opportunity to travel with AC. Godspeed and be prepared to be profoundly blessed and encouraged.

Gray's Measuring My Days nourishes the reader with life changing words of wisdom as he takes us through the days of his adventurous, interesting and peaceful life. He reminds us that the best of times is now and how precious each moment is. I was motivated to pick up the phone and call the people who I love. The book made me realize that each day is a gift from God and an opportunity for me to become a better and happier person. It also convinced me that peace can be found one person at a time. I recommend this book to anyone who is searching for life's meaning and purpose. Many thanks to this great author.

His work led to the transition from 19th century style into a radically different 20th century art world. He set the stage for the CUBISM of Matisse and Picasso; both credit him as “the father of us all.”Since these art collections are chosen for kids, it would be inspiring if we got a hint of famous artists as children. For instance, at age 10 Paul entered College Bourbon and made friends with Emile Zola and Baptistin Baille—all three were friends for life ever after. Ask kids: Do you have friends for life? In 1857 Paul began at the Free Municipal School of Drawing in Aix. His father was not in favor of this as he wanted his son to be a lawyer. So Paul attended law school but continued drawing.I think it would help children’s imagination to think about Cezanne’s paintings as they do not reflect visual reality as much as “feeling reality”—impressionism. A good exercise for all is to look closely at objects, people or other sights and freely connect to the “inner being” of those. This is what artists try to do. For instance, “Still Life with a Curtain” shows what appears to be scattering of cloths, pitcher and fruit. Why did the artist not arrange these objects more harmoniously? Then nature scenes such as “Jas de Bouffan” and “Mont Sainte-Victoire” seem soft on details but convey a sense of peace. Or do they? Something for art lovers to consider. The portraits of people are bodily disproportionate, such as “The Card Player” and “Madame Cezanne in a red dress." They have rather long bodies compared to their heads. Others like these also seem unrealistic or unflattering. I’d talk with children about what was the artist’s purpose in this? How does it make you feel to see people like this? Compare and contrast paintings in groups—nature, people, still life. That should draw out some creative thoughts.

Love Art for kids By Kindle Customer It would be nice if there was some more information at the front or back, but who could complain about free art work that is kid accessible. I love having it available. I wouldn't suggest it "for kids" it is just as suitable for adults, as it really is nothing but the images. It's great to have some engaging art for them to look at. - and this goes for the whole collection. There are many in this series I was able to get for free and I am so grateful. The quality of the images will depend on your device. I have an Android Tablet, 6-8 inches. Whether portrait or landscape mode depends on the image. so for best viewing, make sure you have the options to switch

I would have appreciated some commentary about some of his works. However, maybe the author’s goal was to get readers to learn more about these artists on their own.I don't like that Stanley Cesar made one book of Cezanne’s work and put different covers on the same 24 paintings. Surely, Cezanne produced more than 24 works of art? I can't imagine the reason for this unless it was to sell multiple copies to the same reading public.Interestingly, some cover paintings are not included in the 24 inside; I was sure the works of art in this book would be different – alas, no.
