Hickman finally starts bleeding more of what is going on in New Avengers into the main book here and revelations are made that are quite stunning, but like usual, Hickman leaves more questions to be answered and piles more intrigue on the ones still unanswered as he will probably reveal all in grand fashion at the closure of his run. This volume kicks off with a chapter break issue entitled Rogue Planet. In it Hickman shows a future Ironman going into the past to warn our current Avengers of a, well, rogue planet that is on a collision course with Earth. This future Ironman helps the team out and reveals his true agenda to the current Ironman, Tony Stark. It is odd to me that all the other Avengers so willingly accept the aid of a "future Ironman" but oh well there is a story to progress. The next four issues are a mini arc that is just Hickman style weird and ends with some bombshell shakeups. On A.I.M. Island the amoral scientist group, with the coolest beekeeper suits around, continue poking and prodding into the unknown with little to no care of the consequences. I believe it was made clear early on in this series, but here Hickman pounds it in that the A.I.M. scientists are very aware of the incursion events going on in the multiverse that Stark and his illuminati pals are dealing with over in New Avengers, and really do not care. In fact they seem to just want to stir up as much trouble before their planet reaches it's own doom. They have a machine that is able to open into parallel worlds and are able to reach in and pull beings out just as an incursion of two worlds occurs. They just happened to pull the original lineup of the Avengers out; Captain America, Ironman, Thor, Antman, Wasp, and the Hulk, who are all kinda evil. The story unfolds in a non-linear fashion as Maria Hill and S.H.I.E.L.D. play catchup to the madness A.I.M. has unleashed and then the current team of the Avengers are on the case as well. A.I.M. also releases something into the multiverse that leads to a startling revelation. But finally, in issue 28 Hickman lays out a great character moment for Bruce Banner and a great moment of this series, as this volume just runs high on it's concepts and plot points up until Banner's awesome moment. Banner has a meeting with Tony Stark to discuss some things he has noticed ever since the formation of the new team and it leads to a startling development...Nothing but top notch art work here as Esad Ribic, Mike Deodato, Butch Guice, and Salvador Larroca do the illustrating work for issue 24 and then Larroca does the next four issues. They are colored by Marvel's stable of phenomenal colorists with Frank Martin, Dean White, Paul Mounts, and Laura Martin. All in all, a very good entry to Hickman's crazy multiverse shattering Avenger story that has some odd moments and is more setup for what is to come, but still very entertaining and engaging along with some marvelous art. Next up Cap remembers a thing or two about the Illuminati in Avengers Volume 6: Infinite Avengers (Marvel Now). Cannot wait!!!

Since all the Earths of every universe are eventually going to collide, it was only a matter of time before we met some evil Avengers. In this case, the meddling of A.I.M. is what brings them to Earth 616. A.I.M.is also revealed to be tied to the Mapmakers - a powerful race that Black Swan mentions. But, nothing comes from either of these facts. This volume was a muddled mess. In addition to the two Avengers teams going head to head, we have a time traveler from the future (how is there a future if everything dies?) here to warn Tony Stark about a rogue planet about to collide with Earth. Meh. What makes this planet so dire when all the universes are colliding anyway?Overall, the only thing that made this volume worth reading was seeing Banner figure out that something was up and his introduction to the Illuminati. The incursion storyline is just not that compelling since our heroes have done nothing but talk about it. Because, that is all they can do.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not the best premise, but still written really well By Ben Martin This volume takes on the old comic book trope of alternate versions of characters we already know, but still manages to get creative with the twists and turns it takes along the way. This story had some great moments in it, with an alternate version of the Avengers being pulled into our world by AIM and clashing with the heroes. here were some great surprises, and I love the way the alternate Bruce Banner was written. One of my favorite parts off this, however, was the final issue, which had a conversation between our Banner and Tony Stark, which ties in to the events happening in New Avengers. If you're going to keep up with this title, at this point you're going to want to keep up with both, which basically combine in the four-volume "Time Runs Out" series.I'm not a huge fan of Larroca's art, but it's better than a lot of art I've seen over the years.

About the Author USA Today Bestselling Author Lacey Silks writes erotic and contemporary romances with a touch of suspense. Her stories come from her life, dreams and fantasies. She’s a happily married wife with two kids who uses her husband to test out the more intimate scenes for her writing – he said he doesn’t mind it at all. Lacey likes to make her readers blush and experience the story as if they were the characters. Drawing on the reader’s most sensitive emotions through realistic stories satisfies her more than… …ok not really, but you get the point ;) She likes a pinkish shade on a woman’s cheeks, men with large feet and sexy lingerie-especially when it’s torn off the body. If I didn’t already have that book to dive straight into I think I would have found this frustratingly short. It is a very quick read, introducing Julia and her hang-ups over the way her father cheated on her mother, and to a lesser extent the way her mother has been going through boy-toys ever since. We also get a glimpse of why Scar is the way he is and thinks the way he does. It’s an easy enough read, with hints of how Scar and Julia first met, and a bit of excitement as the two of them get trapped together and have a little heated fun. I, personally, don’t think it’s quite hot enough to be classed as erotica but it’s definitely on the warmer side of contemporary romance. This is not a complete story, the characters aren’t too deeply developed and it is a very quick read, however, it’s quite fun and if you’re planning on reading Cheaters Anonymous, it is probably best to start here.

Had all the elements you could want in the old friend who could or would want to be more. It had been 5 years since Julie Blakely and Scar Wagner had seen each other. It was the end of their senior year when she had moved away from New York when her parents divorced. You see they became “weed buddies” their senior year when trying to deal with their parents affairs. For Scar he was one of 5 children but the product of his father’s affair so doesn’t believe that relationships can ever be solid. Jules also didn’t believe in lasting love once finding out her father was an endless cheater. So, the two made a pack never to date or marry because someone in a relationship would always going to cheat. Scar went out to prove his theory correct so Jules could see first-hand, going for longtime relationships and watching them crumble. When they bump into each other on this trip neither are kids anymore and both can see each other through appreciative eyes. They spend an evening catching up and the next day skiing the unthinkable happens. I really enjoyed this author’s style of writing this was a novella if anything in length. I would hate to think this writer will be breaking up this whole continued storyline into sections to sell. Since this was only 30 pages or so. The characters however in this story blend well together. The anticipation with what will be said or what they will do next is so worth the read alone. I give this 5 stars. Provided by Net Galley.

By Lissa I received this story for an honest review. This story is a prequel to her upcoming release Cheater's Anonymous (due out in April). it's the story of the first time Julia and Scar bump into each other since high school. Set at a ski resort where Julia is stuck there with her Mother and her latest boy toy and her sister she's having a miserable time when she bumps into the last person she expects to see. Scar was her best friend in high school, both dealing with home issues related to cheating parents they bonded over their cynicism towards love. They haven't seen each other in 5 years and though time has definitely changed them both they find themselves falling into a familiar rhythm with maybe a tension that wasn't there before....I'm so happy this is a prequel....first off Julia is snarky and witty and her description of her mom's antics had me laughing and thankful that wasn't my mom. Focused on her future she doesn't have the time nor does she want love right now as opposed to her serial dater sister. Scar is the hot black sheep of his family, though from the sounds of it his brothers are no slouches either, but still he's the one on the outside with just the bit of rebel in him. I found this short story a quick, easy, fun, and intriguing read that had me putting Cheater's Anonymous on my TBR so I can read the rest of Julia and Scar's story!

In 1981, the Commonwealth of Virginia, which had been dominated for decades by “the Organization,” a political machine led by former Governor and U.S. Senator Harry Byrd Sr., took its first baby steps to becoming the vibrant state it is today. That year, Charles Robb rejected the machine and began a new Democratic Party in his campaign for governor. Instead of running against African Americans, Robb reached out to Douglas Wilder, the state’s only African American State Senator and other leaders in the African American Community to rally voters of color to support the Democratic ticket. With the help of a heavy African American turnout, Robb won and the Byrd machine was crushed. In 1985, just four years later, Doug Wilder won the party’s nomination for Lieutenant Governor against the cries of “Virginia isn’t ready” and, later that year, defied the naysayers by being elected to that office. Within five years, he would be sworn in as the first elected African American governor in American history.SON OF VIRGINIA by L. Douglas Wilder details the events of the author’s life to paint a portrait of the changing face of America. It will be a story of constant struggle and conflict, not only Wilder’s struggle, but also that of courageous people who stood up to decades of discrimination, corruption and greed. The book will stand as a road map for continued American progress in our elections and laws and a stark warning of what may happen if we relax our commitment to this program.

Son of Virginia: A Life in America's Political Arena, by L. Douglas Wilder

Review “Long before Barack Obama, there was Doug Wilder. The trail blazed by Wilder, the first African-American elected Governor of any state, helped to make President Obama possible. Now for the first time, this grandson of slaves tells his remarkable story in his own inimitable fashion. Son of Virginia is an instant classic that will inform and inspire for generations to come.”--Prof. Larry J. Sabato, Director, University of Virginia Center for Politics“Governor Wilder’s memoir is must-reading for anyone seeking to understand why Virginia, the place where America began, is once again a national bellwether. Retracing the key moments of his extraordinary career with characteristic candor and flair, America’s first elected African-American governor explains how he demolished the political orthodoxy of the day by taking his case directly to the people. In the process he opened opportunities for others and almost certainly changed the course of American history.”—Frank B. Atkinson, author of The Dynamic Dominion and Virginia in the Vanguard“Son of Virginia is a vivid, detailed, remarkably candid memoir that shares with readers the thinking, impressions, and feelings of the first elected African American governor in the United States. A learned and impassioned exploration of recent American history, Son of Virginia is itself an important historical document.”-- Randall Kennedy, Michael R. Klein Professor of Law, Harvard University. Wilder’s story is one of personal perseverance and triumph. It also describes a political tragedy for the Republican Party. Robert Judson Wilder cast Republican ballots. L. Douglas Wilder became a Democrat. The Wilder memoir has moved to the top of our must-read stack. We anticipate finding additional fodder for comment. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)A sweeping picture of a motivated man’s success, ‘Son of Virginia’ also offers an insightful and incisive portrait of the new face of the Old Dominion, one that lays at least some of its racist past to rest while simultaneously reveling in its growing inclusiveness. Wilder has left lasting footprints on this city, this state and this nation. Often controversial but never dull, he has forged a vivid reputation, one mated by this moving and engaging memoir. - Jay Strafford, retired writer and editor for The Richmond Times-Dispatch (Richmond Times-Dispatch)" The book reminds readers of the personal strength and political acumen that his success required. And, his memories of a not-too-distant city and state are crucial to the canon of Virginia history." (Style Weekly)

About the Author Lawrence Douglas Wilder (born January 17, 1931) served as the first African American to be elected as governor of Virginia. Wilder served as the 66th Governor of Virginia from 1990 to 1994. When earlier elected as Lieutenant Governor, he was the first African American elected to statewide office in Virginia. His most recent political office was Mayor of Richmond, Virginia, which he held from 2005 to 2009.

It is well written, honest, and informative for those of us who have little knowledge (unless we read the autobiographies of other courageous black leaders who made a difference in America) of the struggles for advancement of human rights that minority groups have long endured. Educate yourself with an open mind. You will also love Deborah Davis' book "Guest of Honor" (Booker T. Washington) and books about George Washington Carver, Frederick Douglass, and many other great men of color.

A rare and honest glimpse of an African American icon By JRR After reading this memoir I was even more impressed by Governor Wilder's life and accomplishments than I had been in the many years I had followed his political career. When you read about the pride, resilience, mand fortitude he possessed in his military and political experience you will be too. Against the odds, a man such as this comes along. Young people should listen and learn.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Science Fiction at it's best. By R. Christenson / Lunamation This is the first of a three issue mini-series adapting Robert A. Heinlein's classic science fiction novel Citizen of The Galaxy, widely considered one of his best young adult novels.SPOILERSThis issue covers the childhood of slave boy Thorby, starting with his arrival on a planet far across the galaxy from Earth. Baslim the crippled beggar buys Thorby in a slave auction, provides him food, shelter, and a superior education, and ultimately freedom. But Baslim inadvertently involves the boy in his own interstellar intrigue, in which the beggar is arrested, leaving Thorby in the hands of a space captain . . . to be continued . . . and I can't wait for the next issue, even though I've read the novel before. If your only exposure to Heinlein is from the film Starship Troopers, don't expect to find as much violence here, though you won't be disappointed in any other respects; the story is very engaging. More than anything in Starship Troopers, Thorby's character reminds me of young Anakin Skywalker as a slave on Tatooine in The Phantom Menace. Likewise if your only exposure to Heinlein is his best-selling Stranger In A Strange Land or later adult novels like Friday, this is not an "adult" graphic novel, but an excellent one.As far as I can tell, having read the book over a year ago, it's a faithful enough adaptation. The art is good, the writing good, the story clear. The images depict the Sargon space port very much as I had pictured it when reading the book. The "flavor" is just right.

How adaptations should be done By Paul This is a graphic novel of the Heinlein classic, which I haven’t read in decades, but the story was told so well here that my memory was quickly jogged. To make this simple, this is how adaptations should be done, though it’s interesting to note just how much could be left out of the original while still telling the complete story. The artwork is superior to most of the graphic novels I’ve reviewed—admittedly few—and I was amused to note how much better the female characters were rendered (she’s not bad, she’s just drawn that way). If you liked the original you’ll love this, and if you never read it you won’t feel like you’re missing anything with this version.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I was very disappointed when I received this By cwl I was very disappointed when I received this. I thought it was the original written novel by Heinlein. I should have looked closer at the offer.

The story line speaks volumes of life as it happens in the heroine's life. She goes from young and innocent to a mature, confident and well rounded woman. Following her story brought tears to my eyes at times and laughter at other times. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good read.Additional information: The format has been fixed. Don't miss out on this book, especially since you can now read it for free!

Paynter The grammatical errors and the constant shift in perspective made this book hard to read. The plot was interesting, the tidbits of history were fun. However a lot of plot lines were cast out and many of them were undeveloped and glossed over.

The 2008 financial collapse, the expansion of corporate and private wealth, the influence of money in politics―many of Wall Street's contemporary trends can be traced back to the work of fourteen critical figures who wrote, and occasionally broke, the rules of American finance.

Edward Morris plots in absorbing detail Wall Street's transformation from a clubby enclave of financiers to a symbol of vast economic power. His book begins with J. Pierpont Morgan, who ruled the American banking system at the turn of the twentieth century, and ends with Sandy Weill, whose collapsing Citigroup required the largest taxpayer bailout in history. In between, Wall Streeters relates the triumphs and missteps of twelve other financial visionaries. From Charles Merrill, who founded Merrill Lynch and introduced the small investor to the American stock market; to Michael Milken, the so-called junk bond king; to Jack Bogle, whose index funds redefined the mutual fund business; to Myron Scholes, who laid the groundwork for derivative securities; and to Benjamin Graham, who wrote the book on securities analysis. Anyone interested in the modern institution of American finance will devour this history of some of its most important players.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Interesting read By Autamme_dot_com What exactly is Wall Street and how does it really function? The question is not as simple as you might think. Can the reputation of this famous collective institution be any more battered and criticised yet its presence dominates the world financial markets and can impact many domestic economies long away from New York. Wall Street coughs, the world recoils. This weighty book takes a deep look at the transformation of Wall Street from being a “clubby enclave of financiers” to what it is today. A total of 14 “financial visionaries” throughout time have been selected as the focus within individual chapters, although it is clearly concerning itself with more than just these key people. The author lets the stories speak for themselves, rather than being a piece of student “agit prop” or a hagiography for the Wall Street elite. As you may expect, there is a wealth of references and further reading suggestions so that the dedicated reader can drill down further.Credit must be given to the author for the way he has weaved a fairly complex (and arguably controversial) story together to provide an interesting narrative both to the general reader and for the professional or academic. A credible balancing act has been reached and when the general reader begins to feel a bit of information overload, it is easy to “fast forward” towards the next subject or thought. This book does not focus on advocacy for change or reform. The reader can reach their own conclusions. The book does provide a fairly neutral, interesting history that speaks for itself. You might believe you know a fair bit about the world financial markets, history and politics: this book will surely add a bit more to the credit side of your knowledge ledger.

To help those old school RPG fans out there: By WDG This book is akin to buying a hard-bound expanded copy of Ultima V's "Book of Lore" on PC (right down the the B&W ink line drawings in the Bestiary section). As a kid, this is the book you would read from back of the car on the trip home from the computer store. If you are a collector of PC RPGs and want extra materials to go on the shelf with your physical copy of the game, go right on ahead. It would be helpful if this listing put it's line: "Please note, this is not a strategy guide." in BOLD and at the top of the description INSTEAD of at the bottom.

Perez If you loved poring over D&D Campaign Setting Books like Forgotten Realms from 3rd Edition, then this book should be in your collection. If not, then you need to either be obsessed with Pillars of Eternity or a fan of world building. This book covers details of Eora, Pillars of Eternity's world, and it gets really in depth. You'll get a chapter on the pantheon of gods which has a nice asymmetry to it (there are 3 gods involved with death). There is also a chapter on souls and animancy, something unique to Eora, where they describe the reincarnation of all kith and the different viewpoints on it. The chapter detailing the various regions and their populations and other statistics looks good but I only skimmed it. There is a chapter on races which details sub-races and their locations as well as going into their migration patterns. Then there are two chapters on history, one older history, one more recent. Finally there is a bestiary which has some nice illustrations (though there are excellent pieces of art throughout).Overall I have not yet read the entire thing but I am enthralled and pleased with this piece of the puzzle. It could definitely be used as an inspiration for a pen-and-paper campaign in Eora, though you would need an existing system since there are no statistics listed (just fluff, no crunch). I'm very excited to play the game tomorrow and this has been a nice resource to thumb through in anticipation of the game's release!

Nice: but badly needs a marker ribbon By Usually Quiet Nicely put together and attractive, but so far I've found the most useful information is duplicated in other sources. Also, (and this pertains to both the Collector's Edition Guide and the Guidebook): they both badly a need quality built-in ribbon marker, to complete their usefulness and their look. I'm sure you considered it: you just made the wrong decision about it. As it is, I've had to make my own.

Ben Urwand reveals this collaboration and the cast of characters it drew in, ranging from Goebbels to Louis B. Mayer. At the center was Hitler himself―obsessed with movies and their power to shape public opinion.

The Collaboration: Hollywood's Pact with Hitler, by Ben Urwand

From Bookforum In order to build his case, and to expose what he sees as not merely greed, cowardice, and opportunism on the part of movie moguls but outright collaboration with Nazi officials, Urwand marshals his evidence with the zeal of a criminal prosecutor. What begins, innocently enough, as an attempt to reveal “the complex web of interactions between the American studios and the German government of the 1930’s” very quickly becomes a matter of defending, as best he can, his claim about the vast extent to which Los Angeles- based German consul Georg Gyssling censored American movies and controlled their leading producers. —Noah Isenberg

Review A tremendous piece of work, fully sustained, building momentum charged by thrillingly detailed storytelling, increasing suspense, and a consistent movement from outrages to atrocities, with a stunning conclusion of heroism and tragedy--and it is as well a devastating RIP to what we've been told, all down these years, about 'the genius of the system.'--Greil MarcusFull of startling and surprising revelations, presented in exemplary fashion, without any moralizing or sensationalism. "The Collaboration" shows how Hollywood and especially the big studios went along with German demands to censor movies not only before but especially after the Nazi seizure of power.--Richard J. EvansUrwand...presents explosive new evidence about the shocking extent of the partnership between the Nazis and major Hollywood producers...[A] riveting book...As you turn its pages you realize with dismay that collaboration is the only fitting word for the relationship between Hitler and Hollywood in the 1930s. Using new archival discoveries, Urwand alleges that some of the Hollywood studio heads, nearly all of whom were Jewish, cast their lot with Hitler almost from the moment he took power, and that they did so eagerly--not reluctantly. What they wanted was access to German audiences. What Hitler wanted was the ability to shape the content of Hollywood movies--and he got it...What is shocking and new about Urwand's account is its blow-by-blow description of Hollywood executives tailoring their product to meet the demands of the Nazi regime.--David Mikics"Tablet Magazine" (06/10/2013)Urwand draws on a wealth of previously uncited documents to argue that Hollywood studios, in an effort to protect the German market for their movies, not only acquiesced to Nazi censorship but also actively and enthusiastically cooperated with that regime's global propaganda effort.--Jennifer Schuessler"New York Times" (06/25/2013)Urwand's book details in sometimes shocking fashion how the Hollywood film industry, including studios run by legendary Jewish film moguls such as Louis B Mayer, were willing to pre-screen their films for Nazi officials and remove content they found objectionable.--Andy Goldberg"Military.com" (08/04/2013)Urwand is tearing down the popular impression that the 1930s Hollywood community stood united in efforts to combat the Nazi regime. Quite the contrary, says Urwand, whose research reveals a shocking level of collaboration (or "Zusammenarbeit, "i.e. 'working together') between the German government and Tinseltown's studios--many of which were famously headed by Jews..."The Collaboration "depicts a studio system in which films were submitted for approval to aggressive German propaganda officials, who demanded cuts and changes to material deemed 'detrimental to German prestige'--not only to film versions created for the German market, but for the U.S. and countries around the world.--Lesley M. M. Blume"Vanity Fair online" (08/22/2013)Urwand's investigation of this dark chapter in the history of the American film industry is as intriguing as it is compellingly told.--Theis Duelund"Los Angeles Magazine" (09/10/2013)[A] provocative book.--Rosemary Neill"The Australian" (09/28/2013)Urwand's book about how Hollywood conducted business with and within Germany after Hitler's ascent to power is a fascinating examination of capitalist amorality in the face of evil. Urwand does a good job of cataloging the ways Hollywood studios--largely headed by immigrant Jewish entrepreneurs--took measures to placate the Nazis so they could continue to show films in Germany throughout the 1930s, until the Nazi invasion of Poland...Urwand has uncovered a very interesting, heretofore unknown, true Hollywood story.--Philip Martin"Arkansas Democrat-Gazette" (09/29/2013)This eminently accessible, often riveting account of a little-understood chapter in American cinema history should appeal to a wide general readership.--Roy Liebman"Library Journal" (10/15/2013)With great attention to detail, Urwand describes multiple contacts between the studios and German officials, and he apparently breaks some new ground with his descriptions of Georg Gyssling, who became a Hollywood fixture after Hitler came to power in 1933.--Roger Currie"Winnipeg Free Press" (11/23/2013)"The Collaboration" felt genuinely original and eye-opening as Ben Urwand systematically revealed the way major Hollywood studios were willing to protect their financial interest in the German market of the 1930s by appeasing the Nazi regime. The road to hell was paved by a thousand concessions.--Allan Hunter"Glasgow Herald" (12/14/2013)"The Collaboration "expertly dismantles Hollywood's rose tinted view of history, proving it wasn't standing up to fascism as it has claimed, but eagerly appeasing the Nazis so long as the money was coming in.--Kyle Ryan"A.V. Club" (09/06/2013)"[An] eye-opening study of Hollywood and the Nazi elite "The Collaboration "unfolds a story that rather knocks the shine off the golden age of cinema Urwand has done some energetic digging in the archives, quoting letters, memos and newspaper reports to uncover a shameful policy of compromise and kowtowing on the part of the studio bosses. And what lends the story its peculiar irony is that those bosses who did their utmost to appease the crazed ideology of Nazism were by and large Jews themselves.--Anthony Quinn"The Guardian" (10/16/2013)"Urwand sheds new light on the way the studio bosses responded to Nazi pressure, from 1933, when Hitler assumed power, to 1941, when the United States entered the war Drawing on American and German archival material, the author shows that Hollywood began working with the Nazis in 1933. The collaboration was not passive, but voluntary: part of a strategy necessary in order for the studios to maintain their market in Germany--which had more movie theaters than any other country in Europe Urwand describes how the Nazis tried to shape the very content of American films--and often succeeded.--Samuel Blumenfeld"Le Monde" (10/11/2013)"Hard-hitting Urwand has dug deep and come up with some genuine revelations The story is quite dramatic, and shameful.--Philip Kemp"Times Higher Education" (10/24/2013)"

Impeccably researched and impressively argued, Ben Urwand s gripping volume systematically reveals the way major Hollywood studios were willing to protect their

financial interests in the German market by appeasing the Nazi regime. Urwand has unearthed remarkable evidence from archives in Germany and America, confirming that the road to hell was paved with a thousand concessions. Hollywood studios went to astonishing lengths not to offend or upset the Nazi regime. What began with minor adjustments to scripts eventually reached a point where projects that were unsympathetic to Germany s past or critical of the Nazis were simply never made The studios didn t just follow a policy of accommodation they became willing partners with the Nazis to reach an understanding of what could be mutually beneficial to both parties. The book is such a revelation because it goes against the grain of commonly held assumptions Urwand is particularly good at marshalling hard facts and solid evidence that builds into a horrifying indictment of studios that continued to operate in Germany throughout the first eight years of Hitler s rule Even as the full horrors of the Nazi regime became apparent to the world, Hollywood continued to offer the hand of collaboration, a fact all the more ironic considering that many of the studio bosses were Jewish This is a book that challenges every rose-tinted view of Hollywood s Golden Age. It sheds a piercing light on dark deeds and is an invaluable work of political history that has all the page-turning urgency of a thriller.--Allan Hunter"Glasgow Herald" (10/19/2013)"In Urwand s account of the relationship between the American film industry and the government of Germany in the 1930s, he shows that Hollywood studios put profits ahead of scruples in their dealings with the Nazis.--Lisa Jarvinen"Philadelphia Inquirer" (11/03/2013)"Urwand s book uncovers important material about the relationship between the American film industry and the Nazi regime Readers may or may not agree with Urwand s conclusion about the perils of Jewish self-denial. But in highlighting it, he provides a useful reminder that scholarship on the Nazi era continues to serve as a mirror in which Jews view themselves.--Gavriel Rosemfeld"Forward" (11/08/2013)"Urwand has dug deep in the German archives and found evidence that the Nazis business dealings with some of the studios were much closer than previously realized. He also draws attention to the flagrant lobbying of the Nazi emissary to Hollywood.--J. Hoberman"London Review of Books" (12/19/2013)"A welcome addition to understanding Hollywood s response to the rise of Nazism.--J. Fischel"Choice" (01/01/2014)"[The] revelations in Ben Urwand s controversial expose, The Collaboration," are nothing short of astonishing, going well beyond what was known about Hollywood s timidity during that era. With damning archival evidence, Urwand argues that the studios, motivated by profits, were reluctant to abandon the German market, where American films were popular and Hitler himself was a fan Urwand s finely documented account is even more chilling--in large part because the collaborators to whom he points were American, and in many cases also Jewish.--Julia M. Klein"Boston Globe" (10/19/2013)"The book is a fascinating take on the shady politics of Hollywood and should be read by anyone interested in going behind the glamour of 1930s cinema.--Taylor Downing"History Today" (09/01/2014)

Fells I have decided to revise my review here due to new information - a lot of it - that I was unaware of when I originally wrote this review. Mr. Urwand is a good writer and his book remains fascinating to read, but he seems better suited to the field of fiction rather than non-fiction.Arthor Urwand seems to depend somewhat on the readers' benefit of hindsight - that everybody knows you can't do business with Nazis - as if this was a no-brainer to everybody in the early and mid-1930s. One of the greatest prophets of Nazi thuggery during that time was Winston Churchill, but many preferred to believe that he was an alarmist and just posturing politically. But more troubling is Urwand's flawed analyses of the few films that the studios did produce in the 1930s to highlight anti-Semitism and the Nazi threat.THE HOUSE OF ROTHSCHILD (1934) stands as the one significant film produced by a major studio that tackled anti-Semitism and drew a distinct parallel from the 19th century time frame of its story to modern-day Nazi Germany. Urwand correctly observes that the reaction to ROTHSCHILD resulted in the studios swearing off the topic until after the Second World War. The problem is that Urwand blames the film itself for the resulting ban. The author provides an extensive review of ROTHSCHILD, even quoting the film's dialogue to make his points.Unfortunately, he engages in selective quotes and omits a few others that would give a different impression of the narrative. For example, Urwand complains that in the film's prologue, old Meyer Rothschild is portrayed as a stereotypical Shylock character, seeking to cheat the tax collector by keeping a set of phony books and offering the taxman a bribe. Germany was delighted and used ROTHSCHILD excerpts for propaganda. But this sequence doesn't play the way Urwand depicts. Dialogue conveys that Meyer usually pays tax of 2,000 gulden but the tax collector arbitrarily imposes 20,000 gulden unless Meyer pays him a bribe. This substantially changes the viewer's impression.I could cite more examples from ROTHSCHILD but this is a review, not a rebuttal. Suffice it to say Urwand doesn't appear to be a vintage film buff for he fails to tell his readers that the anti-Semitic character in ROTHSCHILD is played by Boris Karloff, clearly portraying a civilized type of Frankenstein monster. Likewise, Urwand calls Hollywood's first anti-Nazi film, CONFESSIONS OF A NAZI SPY (1939), a "cheesy" B picture when it was very much an A picture with an all-star A-list cast. As has been observed, everybody is entitled to their own opinion but not to their own facts. Where were the fact-checkers for Harvard University Press?

M Mills When I stroll through my library I see my shelves bulging with books on the Nazi era in history. And yet...I have added a new tome on a new aspect of the evil regime which ruled Germany from 1933-45 bringing death, murder and destruction to millions of people. The book is "The Collaboration" whose topic is the pact Hollywood made in the 1930s to do business with Germany. Like IBM, General Motors and other huge American corporations the Hollywood studios wanted their film product to do well overseas. Germany loved American films including Hitler. The Fuehrer watched films almost every evening enjoying everything from Mickey Mouse cartoons to King Kong to Greta Garbo costume dramas such as "Camille." Even though most of the moguls in Los Angeles were Jewish they still wanted their hand in the rich pie of German revenues. Ben Urwand of Harvard has done study of this little reported nexus between the movies and the murderous regime in Berlin. Much of the book deals with separate movies and how they were received in Germany. Hitler had three critical responses to film. A movie was good, bad or "switched off" (meaning that Hitler ordered the film projector to stop running the film of the evening). The book is rich in interesting quotations. A sampling of them include:"An important fact about Hollywood movies in this period, however, is that they were extremely popular in Nazi Germany."-p. 7"The studio heads, who were mostly immigrant Jews, went to dramatic lengths to hold on to their investment in Germany."-p. 9"Every night before going to bed Adolf Hitler watched a movie. He picked the title himself from a list presented to him at dinner...After the movie, he started to talk again. He quickly gave his opinion of what he had seen."-p. 10"The members of Hitler's inner circle also knew that one of his favorite actresses was Greta Garbo."-p. 13"The Nazis, in complete consistency with their anti-Semitic policies, were insisting that all cultural workers in Germany be of Aryan descent."-p. 62"...the Jew, once so prominent in American culture, was suddenly nowhere to be found."-p. 80. The author shows how American filmmakers deleted Jewish characters in an effort not to cause anger at their inclusion by the Third Reich.-p. 90"From the day Hitler became Chancellor of Germany...American movies were massively popular in the Third Reich."-p. 112"The collaboration of American movie studios with Nazi Germany was complex and multifaceted..."-p. 147Urwand comments on Sinclair Lewis' novel "It Can't Happen Here" a book which imagines what would happen if a Fascist dictator ruled the U.S.A.: "No author was better qualified to handle such material than Sinclair Lewis."-p. 161 The book was not made into a movie by nervous film studios who did not want to breast the German ire at material of this sort."When "The Mortal Storm" was released on June 14, 1940, it was without any doubt the first truly significant anti-Nazi film..it attacked the Nazis for their persecution of a minority group."-p. 217 Along the way in this fascinating work we read reviews of such films as "King Kong"; "Blond Venus"; "Casablanca" "The Lives of a Bengal Lancer"; "The Eternal Jew" (made in Germany as an attack on the Jewish people) and many more. Reading these reviews by the author can give insight into how Germany reacted to the Hollywood dream factory's films. During World War II the American film community turned out hundreds of anti-Nazi films though kept mostly mum on the plight of the Jews in Europe. "The Collaboration" reads like a textbook and may not interest younger readers who have little interest or knowledge of the Hollywood studio system or the film habits of a dictatorship that was destroyed in 1945. However, for us old hands at such study the book provided a few hours of pleasure.

Hollywood's Pact with Nazi's for nearly Eight years By Gil Rosenberg A shocking revelation on how Hollywood worked with Nazi propaganda officials to actually craft the films created by Hollywood in the USA between 1933 and up until the US entered the war. In a desperate attempt to placate Hitler's Nazi Germany and preserve Hollywood's market share in Germany and countries occupied or allied with Nazi Germany the Studios were guided by preservation of market share abroad. Careful not to offend German sensibilities Hollywood succeeded to keep it's market share in Germany despite the Nazi monetary laws that restricted the studios from taking their profits out of Germany. The author points out that Hollywood Studio's were actually forced to direct their profits to Germany military war production thereby supporting the Nazi war industry. Hollywood also provided Nazi Germany with entertainment with underlying propaganda with the theme of self-sacrifice for the nation films which Nazi film industry failed to deliver to it;s own nation. This is a perfect example of what happens when corporations are focused on one thing and one thing only- maximization of profits and satisfying shareholders profits above all else.

I know that in Dawn, and Day the Zombies weren't the main threat and ultimately people where but they where still presented as a danger, which I haven't felt in this story so far. With that said I like the story, the second act does a good job moving the characters forward taking sides to set up the third act. I anticipate in the third the Zombies may very well have their day in the mist of chaos.

By Don Kidwell I'm liking these brief collections of paintings for seeing the work of the masters without the crowds. With regards to Rousseau, I favor his landscapes like "A Carnival Evening" and "The Eiffel Tower" more so than his portraits for not appearing quite so cartoonish, but what's nice is that anyone can enjoy them and judge for themselves. Good book

With a little research we can add much to these paintings selected for youngsters By Rob Natiuk When I see those self-portraits of Henry Rousseau, I think it would inspire some youngsters to do the same for themselves. They’ll see “impressionism” – and they can be instructed to paint impressions rather than try to draw and paint exactly what they see. That’s a great step forward for young artists – older ones too. .This book, like others in the series, is best gazed upon and talked about with those who know a bit about the artist and his/her style. That’s why I wish the compiler of these books would’ve told us a bit more about the artists, their childhood, how they got into art, and how they painted. Thus, these books could be more entertaining and inspirational.Take that “Boy on the Rocks.” Why is this painting more artistic than what a 10-year-old would paint? A question like that would free up a kid’s imagination and perhaps make him less critical of himself as an artist. “The Sleepy Gypsy” could be used for a story – why, where, who, when, what. See details even in what looks like a simple painting. “The Mill” is also good for that, and for showing simplicity of lines and colors. “The Football Players” may make the kids laugh – and see.Rousseau said he had “no teacher other than nature.” There’s a fact from his life that would free us to see how that iinfluenced his art, and how we can learn without formal teachers. We as teachers of young children can make these little collections WORK with a little help from the internet or other books that tell us more about the artists and their lives.

Rating amended.I snagged all of these in the series today, but guess what? I'd thought the paintings would render beautifully on my 8.9" Fire. Yeah, no. There's about 8 words of text for each painting, which are literally about 1.5 inches square, and a bunch of blank page.I wanted to use these as a teaching aid, but the images are far too tiny. So sad; neat books.

Rose This is quite a disappointment, especially when compared to what we had for the first Avengers movie. With the first movie, there was Fury's Big Week, an entire Black Widow adventure, and then a collection of material for the first Captain America movie and Iron Man 2. What do we have for Avengers: Age of Ultron? Well apart from a 16 page prelude comic, which is serviceable, but nothing majorly exciting, the rest are reprints. We have a reprint of the first Avengers movie comic and then a few issues of 616-Universe Avengers introducing us to the Vision and the Maximov twins, but in no way which connects with the upcoming movie. If you can find the $2.99 comic book, buy it. There is nothing new here at all, just 85% filler. The Ant-Man movie already has about triple the amount of original material in it's tie-in comic and is surprisingly a better buy.
