Over the past two centuries, few Christians have been more influential than John Henry Newman. His leadership of the Oxford Movement shaped the worldwide Anglican Communion and many Roman Catholics hold him as the brains behind reforms of the Second Vatican Council. His life-story has been an inspiration for generations and many commemorated him as a saint even before he officially became the Blessed John Henry Newman in 2010. His writings on theology, philosophy, education, and history continue to be essential texts. Nonetheless, such a prominent thinker and powerful personality also had detractors. In this volume, scholars from across the disciplines of theology, philosophy, education, and history examine the different ways in which Newman has been interpreted. Some of the essays attempt to rescue Newman from his opponents then and now. Others seek to save him from his rescuers, clearing away misinterpretations so that Newman's works may be encountered afresh. The 11 essays in Receptions of Newmans show why Newman's ideas about religion were so important in the past and continue to inform the present.

By Bill Engel Without doubt, this is the most comprehensive and significant collection of essays on John Henry Cardinal Newman to date. Newman is perhaps best known to academics (such as myself) for his "The Idea of a University," in which he perspicaciously describes an ideal liberal arts education as embracing both religious and secular concerns. And so I welcomed this collection which made me aware of other aspects of Newman's deep learning--and the afterlife of his writings. The selective and thoughtful range of essays, and the considerable depth of coverage of each, does justice to the book's plan as stated in the title, as a sustained and inclusive account of "Receptions." I would single out for special commendation the essay that kicks off the volume (by Benjamin King), "The Protestant Reception of the Essay on Development, 1845--1925," which indicates the far-reaching influence of Newman's work on the origins of Christian doctrine (in the Catholic Church) for Protestant thinkers who had to acknowledge (and grapple with) the seminal nature of this work that traces the vital path of faith from the time of the Apostles to Newman's own era. Even though this book is outside the scope of my professional area of specialization, the power and importance of Newman's thought transcends any such disciplinary boundaries. Indeed, this is a book for anyone concerned with how it is we have come to live with (and within) our shared cultural inheritance in the West.
