Review Jon Chang wraps BPRE around a realistic portrayal of a pair of PMC contractors in the not so near future Iraq...Just far enough ahead to see what is basically happening to Iraq now. Regional powers destabilizing Iraq until it splits apart, militias sweeping in during a power void, and Corporations taking advantage of it all to make a buck. I swear it's like Jon Chang was staring into a crystal ball looking at the future when he wrote this. It's almost eerie how accurate his portrayal of Iraq is in the few years down the timeline where this story takes place.- James Price, Death Valley Magazine

Good stuff, but not as good as the first By Kid Kyoto While Insurrection: Liberty does not quite live up to the potential of the first book it's still a fun read filled with twists and turns and the sort of over-the-top action we expect from a mash up of Judge Dredd and Warhammer 40k.The first book ended on a cliff hanger, with the rebels of Liberty threatening Earth with economic devastation. But this book side-steps that interesting conflict and instead refocuses on a new rebel judge and a new threat. The new conflict is interesting, but lacks the bite of the first book which pitted loyalty against idealism.Colin MacNeil's art remains strong but seems sketchier and darker here, and none of the designs really stand out as that innovative.I realize this is sounding more and more negative but that's mainly because I enjoyed the first book so much and this follow-up just feels much more timid and weak.

If you want to become a great speaker you need to believe in secrets. The great secret of our time is that you can actually reach a very competent level at any skill just by harnessing the power of your most important asset - your brain. In "Speak Like a Leader" self-growth pioneer and social chameleon Andrian focuses on fundamental principles that define our speaking ability and presents the most impactful but extremely attainable ways to dramatically improve this inherited but quite neglected skill. Andrian begins with the contrarian premise that we live in an age of social and communicational stagnation, even though our forms of communication have evolved dramatically. The current oversimplification of our everyday processes and a lack of ambition when it comes to pursuing more deep and meaningful conversations with others have led us to dismiss the importance of the most fundamental skill that every leader must master: learning to speak in a simple yet influential way.  Leaders know how to speak well because they speak in a way that immediately gets people interested in what they have to say; in a way that evokes the right emotions and leaves people waiting, agonizingly eager, for the next words to come out of their mouth; in a way that makes them more relatable and empathic; in a way that makes people believe that what they are saying is of immense value to them. The next leaders won't seek value from others. The next leaders will be the ones who will first find value within themselves, and then offer it to others. "Speak Like A Leader" teaches you exactly this. Learning to speak well is a skill that anyone can master, and is the most powerful way to communicate your message, discover your inner leader and make an impact in today's loud world.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A must read By John Georgakakis Without exaggeration, I truly believe that this is one of the best books on speaking one can read. Let me explain why by analyzing each chapter:Chapter 1 - Ambition, Motivation, Extroversion And Our Unconscious Competence PursuitIn the first chapter Andrian makes a very important point. In order to become a great speaker you need to embrace your extraverted nature. Through a very nice and motivational narrative, he explains the differences between introverts and extroverts and helps the reader connect with a reality where he is an ambivert with extraverted tendencies.Chapter 2 – The Art Of Small TalkIn the second chapter we are introduced to the subtle art of small talk. This is an area many people struggle with but Andrian manages to demystify it and suggest some effective methods that can make small talk easy for everyone.Chapter 3 - How To Talk Without Running Out Of Things To SayThe third chapter is dedicated to one of the most challenging areas - How to talk without running out of things to say. Although one would think that the author would suggest some strange systems in order for one to cope with this challenge, he actually suggests an incredible mentality shift; a mentality shift that can lead to incredible realizations and will eventually help one get over the limiting beliefs that get in the way between him and this challenge.Chapter 4 – Storytelling And Humor Are Your Unique Selling PointsThis is definitely my favorite chapter. Through a combination of storytelling, scientific research and hands-on advice, the author helps the reader get immersed in the idea of storytelling and how to make it part of the way he expresses himself. This chapter also goes deep into “The recipe for Humor,” and gives some great examples of Humor from famous comedians.Chapter 5 – Controlling The Frame Of A ConversationThis is definitely one of the most interesting chapters of the book because it deals with an area we completely neglect while in a conversation – how to control our frame. Frame control is an ability that characterizes very powerful speakers, like politicians and comedians and also a skill that when harnessed, can help one influence and persuade others.Chapter 6 - Social Intelligence: The Secret To Sustainable InfluenceI have read about social intelligence before but not in the way it is described in the book. Social intelligence is indeed the secret to sustainable influence, mainly because socially intelligent people have the ability to evaluate social situations better and adapt themselves to different social environments. The author explains the reasons behind social intelligence’s importance and also suggests some incredibly uncommon psychological life hacks one can use to gain advantage in social situations.Chapter 7 – Public Speaking MasteryThis chapter is dedicated to public speaking and presentations. Although one would think that there is so much to know about public speaking, the author makes a very interesting statement A successful speech is: 10% your idea + 50% your preparation + 40% attention grabbing techniques. He suggest some great ways to grab the attention of your audience and eventually deliver a great speech.Chapter 8 – Flow – The Secret To Releasing Your Ultimate PotentialTo be honest with you, I wasn’t familiar with the idea of flow and its importance in the way we speak and preform in general. When I read this chapter and became aware of its power, I realized that I would never see a conversation the same way as before. Now I am constantly aware of the idea of flow and I actively try to pursue it while in a conversation, thus making the conversation become more natural and effective.

LOVED IT By Nikos V With an entertaining blend of personal stories, scientific research and methods suggested by experts, Andrian lays out the critical elements of a powerful speaker/conversationalist. They are:1. Extraversion2. Small talk3. The ability to talk without running out of things to say4. Storytelling and humor5. Frame6. Social Intelligence7. Public speaking8. FlowAs you might expect, the author uses these areas to drive home their point. For example, in the chapter on frame, he talks about how Russel Brand humiliated MSNBC’s anchors in Morning Joe by being able to demonstrate a powerful frame.Although these eight areas seem like common sense, they are woefully ignored by most of us during our interactions with others. The author states it well:''In an age of social and communicational stagnation, even though our forms of communication have evolved dramatically. The current oversimplification of our everyday processes and a lack of ambition when it comes to pursuing more deep and meaningful conversations with others have led us to dismiss the importance of the most fundamental skill that every leader must master: learning to speak in a simple yet influential way.”Well researched, easy to read and hard to forget.

Great for Entrepreneurs By Jim I recently started my journey in entrepreneurship and it didn’t take me long to realize that if I am not capable of communicating a powerful message with my words, I will never manage to be successful in this field.A close friend of mine suggested me this book and although I was a bit reluctant in the beginning, I was hooked by the author’s narration immediately. It’s not only that I could relate myself to the author’s ideas, but also that his ability to motivate you while you read can help you become better at conversations unconsciously. There are times in my life where I feel that I am incapable of starting a conversation or building deep connections with people I meet. The author managed to somehow make me feel good about myself and show me that speaking well is a skill anyone can attain and eventually a tool that can help you stand out among others.

"Rucka's storytelling is comprehensive, weaving sociopolitical rhetoric and class structure to an extent seldom seen in the medium. Meanwhile, Lark manages to take Rucka's seriousness to a new level with dark edges, shadowy panels, and ferociously kinetic action. Each page turn is cinematic, just another reason this book might appeal to cross-platform fans of crime movies and TV programs, such as The Godfather or True Detective, as well as police procedural comics, such as Rucka's Gotham Central or Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming's Powers." -BooklistIn a dystopian near-future, government is a quaint concept, resources are coveted, and possession is 100% of the law. A handful of Families rule, jealously guarding what they have and exploiting the Waste who struggle to survive in their domains. Forever Carlyle defends her family's holdings through deception and force as their protector, their Lazarus. The 16 Families have gathered together in the exclusive luxury confines of Triton One to resolve the emerging conflict between Carlyle and Hock, and they've brought their Lazari with them. While Forever's romance with the Morray Lazarus, Joacquim, continues to blossom, she finds herself not only questioning her identity, but also her loyalty to her Family and her father, Malcolm, when orders her to kill her brother, Jonah. Collecting issues #10-15 of the critically acclaimed, New York Times bestselling series and the third story arc, "Conclave."

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A great series continues with more Family intrigue and more Lazari By Whitt Patrick Pond I got hooked on Lazarus last year and have always looked forward to each new volume, and this third one not only does not disappoint but raises the quality bar even higher. What I really like about Rucka and Lark's work is that they keep adding layers of details to give depth and complexity to the world they've created and to the characters who inhabit it.Note: for those unfamiliar with the series and who have not read the previous volumes, I have added a section below on the background of the world of Lazarus. I would suggest reading that before reading the rest of my review of this, the third and newest volume in the series. This volume - Conclave - centers around the fallout from the events in the first volume, where Jonah Carlyle was last seen on the run after his double-dealing was uncovered by his father, Malcolm, the head of Family Carlyle. Jonah, we learn, is now in the hands of Family Hock, being held for ransom by Jakob Hock, which causes Malcolm to call for a conclave of all the Families to resolve the matter. And so this volume shows us who all of the Families are that run the world of Lazarus, and who all of their Lazari are. And as always, Forever Carlyle is at the center of things. Whether she wants to be or not. There is a lot of new detail packed into this volume. For one thing, it opens with a Dramatis Personae section listing most of the Families that run the world, their specific domains, their Lazari and their relationships with other Families ("Allied" or "Unallied, "close ties" or "in conflict", etc). We immediately learn that the two main alliances are the Carlyle Bloc and the Hock Coalition. One of the best things about Conclave is that we learn more about what it means to be a Lazarus. In the first volume, we got to see two of the Lazari: Forever Carlyle and Joacquim Morray. In this volume we get to meet a lot of the other Lazari, and we get to see how different from each other they all are. And how the core fact of their existence as Lazari gives them a kinship with each other that in some ways transcends the relationships they have with their Families. It is a complexity, well brought out here, that adds poignant depth to these characters as a group. Some background on the world of Lazarus:For anyone unfamiliar with this series, there are a lot of dystopias these days, both in literature and in the comics, but the Lazarus series in my opinion has put forward one of the most interesting and well thought out, taking some current trends and extrapolating them into the future and then creating a social order based on the logical outcome. Set in a future that feels like it might be sixty to seventy years or so from now, the dystopia of Greg Rucka and Michael Lark's creation is the apparent result of some global economic and governmental collapse, complicated by an agriculturally-challenged environment where control of genetically-modified seed strains (think Monsanto) is one of the highest mechanisms of power.Society (in what feels like a substantially reduced population) consists of three classes: Family, Serfs and Waste. Family is restricted to a tiny elite - the top 1% of 1% of 1% - a handful of individuals who wield absolute power over a domain, with different Families controlling different domains. Family Carlyle, the central one in the story line, has a domain that apparently extends from the West Coast to the Mississippi River. Family Morray's domain lies to the south, making up what used to be Mexico and Central America. Families Bittner and Hock's domains lie to the north and to the east. Besides wielding total control, Family also have the very best of everything, including access to advanced medical technology. In the particular case of Family Carlyle, their technology allows them greatly increased life-spans, such that Family members who look to be in their 20's may actually be in their 60's, those in their 30's may be in their 90's and so on.Under Family you have Serfs - the maybe 1 in 10 (or more often, 1 in 100) individuals who have some skill or talent or potential that the Family finds useful or necessary. Unlike their medieval namesakes, Serfs in this dystopia are not just agricultural workers but pretty much everyone who serves Family, from domestic servants and soldiers all the way up to medical professionals and scientists. The higher up the service ladder you are, the better life you and your family have. For as long as Family deems you useful and loyal anyway.Everyone else in society - the remaining 95 to 98% of the people in a domain - are considered Waste. Waste - if they're properly registered as legal residents of the domain - are provided a minimum level of subsistence and little else. The most Waste can aspire to - beyond not dying of starvation, disease, natural disaster or just outright being killed - is to be found useful enough at some point to be 'lifted' to Serf. The most Serf can aspire to, beyond moving up the Family service ladder, is not reverting back to Waste. And not being killed if they inadvertently cross some Family line. Nobody moves up to becoming Family. Family are born, not made. Or so it would seem.To maintain their control over their territory, both internally and against external threats, every family has its own private armed force. At the pinnacle of that armed force, every Family has a Lazarus, a member of the Family with special highly advanced bio-tech enhancements and rigorous training that make them not only extremely deadly but also virtually impossible to kill. The chief functions of a Lazarus are to protect the Family against any and all threats, and to enforce the Family's rule. To this end, they are conditioned from early childhood both psychologically and biologically to exhibit unquestioning loyalty to Family.Enter Forever Carlyle. Forever Carlyle is the Lazarus of Family Carlyle. She is the youngest of the five Carlyle siblings, and she is very, very good at her job. She is also increasingly conflicted about some of the things she is called on to do, which we see in the opening scene of the first volume where she must investigate an attack by another Family on one of the Carlyle's precious seed storage facilities. Adding to her problems is the fact that Family Carlyle is riven internally by factions and plots among the siblings, all of whom seem to be aware of something that Forever has been kept ignorant of, a secret kept so intensely that her continued existence appears to depend on her never learning of it.Some reviewers have commented about the slow pace, but Rucka and Lark know what they're doing here. The reason things are proceeding somewhat slowly is because they're engaged in some first-class world-building here, i.e. showing us in intimate episodic detail how things are in this near-future world, building up the reality that the story takes place in. This is important because the characters are very much a part of this world, and their natures are very much determined by who they are in this world, be they Family, Serf or Waste. Or a Lazarus, as Forever happens to be. The result is that you get a disturbing but highly believable world with characters that you can believe inhabit this world.Highly, highly recommended.

This Series Just Keeps Getting Better By Michael James Obviously, I am a fan of the series and you likely are too if you are visiting the page for the third volume. With any type of series I worry about things losing their focus and getting sloppy, but there is none of that here. Everything develops and connects really nicely. If by now you are not completely invested in the world and characters, you will be after this volume. We also learn much more about the world in this volume than either of the first two. This adds more texture and depth to the series as a whole. Although there are familiar elements, nothing feels cliche or out of place. It is probably important to note that this is coming from someone who is not a big comic book reader. This is actually the only comic series that I read. If the story sounds interesting but you aren't sure of the form, I think it is worth a try, since it all works so well in a visual form!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. series gets better with each volume By Frank L. Greenagel Jr. A very well written story in a dystopian future where a few different families rule the world. Lazarus is a strong female lead that works for one of those families as its head warrior/spy/negotiator.The art is excellent (Lark reminds me of Maleev here, which is very high praise). Each volume in this series has gotten better, which is a rare feat. Usually, it is the other way around. I expect that Greg Rucka has carefully plotted this out.

Confidence for Growth, not Merely Gain - Internal Affiliate Hyperlinks the only flaw By Tinfoot Beau Norton presents a short, practical course initially termed "Extreme Confidence", only to reveal an aspect that I particularly appreciated: extreme confidence is actually self-love and inner peace of mind, not aggressive egoism, manipulation, over bearing drive toward material achievements that is often the substance of many "self-motivational" texts.Making a distinction between two types of confidence, Norton succinctly explains each with concrete exercises. I cannot attest to the effectiveness of the recent wave of "brain entertrainment", but one can always use the more traditional forms of relaxation and affirmations. However, the open-body meditation technique Norton advises is one I do use.Norton goes on dealing with goal setting, overcoming fears (a very interesting check point list approach), and three daily ego boosting habits long recognized for their effectiveness. All in all, quite an excellent eBooklet with one minor knock on the head: there are a few internal affiliate hyperlinks to external websites (including one to another eBooklet of his). I frown on this practice, preferring any such links to be in a separate, isolated section at the conclusion of the text if felt needed... and not within the main body, especially affiliated links.

It is too long, too keyword packed and too broad. The second is that the book's content reflects the title completely. It IS a comprehensive guide for increasing self-esteem and confidence. It EXPLAINS how to be confident, overcome fear and anxiety, increase self-esteem, and achieve success in everything you do.So why the criticism? Because I think it's a much too broad scope for such a small book. It brushes all of those subjects, but doesn't go deeply into each one. It's a bit unfocused. But that's as far as my criticism go.The rest is just superb. Good quality, I spotted no formatting or grammar issues. It's a real book written by a real person, not some junk hastily composed by a ghostwriter. It's a genuine work of the successful individual.Beau Norton talks about his own experiences with transparency and integrity. The book is full of substance. I also experienced the life transformation during a past couple of years, so I can honestly testify that I found many of his experiences and advice compatible with that what works for me.This book is especially good in numerating the various techniques for developing confidence and building your personal success. I didn't count them, but there are at least dozen of them and they are ALL in accordance with my experience, something quite rare in the gurus' books.I'm a firm believer that only you can build your success, so it's is very important to find a range of techniques on which you can compose your own successful strategy, which will work for YOU. And "Extreme Confidence" delivers them in abundance.I've highlighted over 30 fragments. I found a few quotes I'll be using in my writing and I'll attribute them to Beau.I felt a special bond with the author while reading this book. I was nodding all the time. I found just a few tips which didn't work for me, like setting specific goals, but they evidently worked for him and are the part of many successful people's philosophy. The rest of the book could have been written by me, so similar are our paths.I recommend this book as an interesting and uplifting read if nothing else. I am a bit unfocused for a confidence building alone, but it's a great resource for studying success.

Some people mistake self-confidence for arrogance but the author clearly shows that truly self-confident people are often quiet and supportive listeners (since they don't really need to impress anyone). Learn how to use goals to increase confidence, how to face your fears, self-reliance and daily success habits that will serve you in any situation. A great guide for parents, teenagers, entrepreneurs and just about anyone who wants more out of life.

Killer Cliffhanger By Tyler Teter I will warn buyers, this book is beyond great, it's really well done and the plot is starting to all wrap up in this series. However, the cliffhanger at the end is really intense, be prepared to go ahead and buy the next one and save yourself the pain of waiting.

Humans have always generated garbage, whether it’s a chewed-on bone or a broken cell phone. Our landfills are overflowing, but with some creative thinking, stuff we once threw away can become a collection of valuable resources just waiting to be harvested. Trash Talk digs deep into the history of garbage, from Minoan trash pits to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, and uncovers some of the many innovative ways people all over the world are dealing with waste.

Trash Talk: Moving Toward a Zero-Waste World (Orca Footprints), by Michelle Mulder

From School Library Journal Gr 5–7—Both a history of trash and a manual of its elimination (or diminution, at least), this nifty book covers a variety of topics, from the trash pits (think archaic sanitary landfills) of the ancient Minoans to the gross filth of New York City in 1850. Employing readable language, Mulder chronicles the development of garbage disposal and goes on to castigate our throw-it-away-and-buy-a-new-one way of thinking. She discusses reformatting, reusing, and repairing to lessen the landfill burdens and presents ways to cut down the enormous amounts of rubbish humans produce on a global daily basis. "Trash Facts" pop up, as do "Take in the Trash" notes. Colorful photos record garbage issues around the world and innovative solutions to cope with this mountainous problem. Pair this with such green titles as Kim McKay and Jenny Bonnin's challenging True Green Kids: 100 Things You Can Do to Save the Planet (National Geographic, 2008) and Brad Herzog's simpler but eye-catching S Is for Save the Planet: A How-to-Be-Green Alphabet (Sleeping Bear, 2009) for a further look at our smelly, bulky accumulations and inventive ways to change our wasteful ways. VERDICT An informative call to action for young greenies.—Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY

Review "Mulder tells the garbage story in clean and engrossing prose, complemented by stock artwork and photographs...Mulder provides all sorts of alternatives to incineration, landfills and ocean dumping...Enclosed in these pages is plenty of food for thought and examples for direct action." (Kirkus Reviews 2015-02-15)"Mulder focuses not only on reducing consumption but also on how we can recoup some of the energy and resources that are thrown away. Ingenious ideas like insulating homes with jeans or weaving old fishing nets into carpeting are just a couple ideas that will spark readers’ imaginations. With full-color photos of kids in action and startling but fascinating trivia about how much trash the world’s population produces, this offers a very compelling argument for conservation." (Booklist 2015-04-01)"The text is written in a conversational style which will appeal to readers. 'Trash Facts' provide additional trivia while colour photographs, perfectly suited to the text, add to the reader’s understanding of the concepts presented...An interesting, thought-provoking book that might inspire some readers to spark some environmental initiatives of their own. Highly Recommended." (CM Magazine 2015-02-13)"Both a history of trash and a manual of its elimination (or diminution, at least), this nifty book covers a variety of topics...Employing readable language, Mulder chronicles the development of garbage disposal and goes on to castigate our throw-it-away-and-buy-a-new-one way of thinking...Colorful photos record garbage issues around the world and innovative solutions to cope with this mountainous problem...An informative call to action for young greenies." (School Library Journal 2015-04-01)"I look forward with great anticipation to each new Orca Footprints [title]. They have been beautifully designed, well researched and blessed with terrific writing. This one is no exception...[Mulder] includes personal observations and anecdotes from her travels and from her life in Victoria today to make us cognizant of simple solutions to some of the ways in which we dispose of unwanted and unneeded objects. The 'Trash Facts' are interesting and inspiring. A wealth of impressive color photos, a table of contents, an index and a list of additional books, movies and websites add to the appeal and to the value." (Sal's Fiction Addiction blog 2015-04-22)"Although the problem is huge, the author writes in a positive and upbeat style and encourages readers to be creative in thinking of solutions. The book is illustrated with many, high quality, colour photographs. There are references to other current resources, including movies and websites, for further study." (Resource Links 2015-04-01)"[An] important title on how to value our environment." (Coombs Report Summer Reading List for Kids 2015-06-20)"There is a nice balance of text and vibrant photos; content is a blend of scientific fact with historical and anecdotal vignettes so that adolescents can relate to the issues while contributing to a solution. Mulder presents an array of solutions, along with several examples of innovative projects demonstrating recycling, reusing, and composting. Due to the relevancy of the topic and clear message to modern teens and pre-teens, this is a valuable purchase for most youth collections." (School Library Connection 2015-11-01)
