Review "Worthy of the adjective, but in a good way."—The New York Times "There are some threats that are too much for even Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman to handle...That's when you call the people who make magic their method."—Craveonline

About the Author J.M. DeMatteis doesn't make much sense to us. One day he's writing spiritual-infused titles such as MOONSHADOW and SEEKERS INTO THE MYSTERY. The next day he's writing funny books like MISTER MIRACLE or DR. FATE. Then another day he's doing super-hero work on The Amazing Spider-Man and Captain America. Still another day he's dipping into the fantasy realm with Abadazad. Make up your mind, Marc!

Writing was later taken over by Jeff Lemire and with this volume J.M. DeMatteis. I can officially say that each writer has been just about equally bland and forgettable. I will get into the specifics in a moment but let me mention that I have tried three New 52 series including Scott Snyder’s Swamp Thing, Suicide Squad and Justice League Dark and have found them all disappointing. There are other comics like Forever Evil and Multiversity that I enjoyed but overall it seems like the New 52 is just not for me and maybe it’s partly due to my age.Peter Milligan set the tone for the JLD and it was decidedly kid friendly. There was lots of emphasis on Justice League and not much on Dark. There were a few creepy moments but nothing a pre-teen couldn’t handle. Lemire took it even further in the kid friendly direction with a long storyline dealing the JLD battling longtime JLA villain Felix Faust over the powerful Books of Magic. The story even included a character that I can only assume was intended to capitalize on the popularity of Harry Potter. So now DeMatteis has taken over writing duties and for a brief moment I thought he was taking the series in a new and improved direction. The back of the book shows Nightmare Nurse with a half demonic face garroting Zatanna. Now THAT would be interesting. A member of the team, revealed as evil, turning on her teammates. And her name IS Nightmare Nurse which is a somewhat frightening name. Halfway through the story DeMatteis does a U-Turn and takes the Tales from the Darkside story and gives it a Goosebumps ending and the team is back to being happy and friendly with Nightmare Nurse learning a good lesson in friendship.DeMatteis stories here just seem random and unfocussed. The team is floating around in the House of Mystery and challenges just pop up for them to deal with. Another issue I have is something I wrote in a previous review. John Constantine is constantly referred to as a bastard by the other members of the team despite no evidence to back it up (at least not in this series). Deadman refers to him exclusively as “con-man” even though he continually fights alongside the team and defends its members. Like the previous writers DeMatteis wants to have his cake and eat it too. He wants Constantine to be regarded as an anti-hero but never has him actually act like an anti-hero (because THAT would be interesting). At one point John Constantine suggests he will leave the rest of the team in peril and escape but is prevented from doing so. This way DeMatteis could point and say LOOK Constantine was going to do something terrible except he didn’t and even when he said he would leave them chained up that was out of character for him based on his actions in the JLD.My suggestion in a review of a previous Justice League Dark volume was go read Swamp Thing by Alan Moore which are all available on Amazon. Then read Sandman by Neal Gaiman and if you can find it The Spectre by Joe Orlando. Then come back and read Justice League Dark and compare the two. I read Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing in the early 1980’s and a distinctly remember many of the storylines over 30 years later. I barely remember JLD volume’s 1 and 2 which I read just recently. DC has done some great, dark, arcane stories but the JLD is safe for kids and forgettable. Volume 5 is my last volume. Done.
