By Tim Kraft Hamilton Jordan used to tell friends that he "could out-chart anybody", referring to an extraordinary ability to draw up political game plans. This book, however, precedes his successful political career and reveals an introspective nature and the writing talent of a superb memoirist. As the tectonic plates were shifting under the central and south Georgia communities of his boyhood, one would think that he had been taking notes. The major figures are there ---- Dr. Martin Luther King, a very young Andrew Young --- but it is the personal touch about a large, gregarious and somewhat divided family, his own, that makes this journal highly readable and timeless. There was a small sign in Hamilton's White House office, years later, a quote from Justice Oliver Wendall Holmes: "It is required of a man that he should take part in the actions and passions of his time, at the peril of being judged not to have lived." Hamilton Jordan lived it and recorded it. Readers should be grateful to his family for editing and publishing this unique memoir.

Engrossing account of how the segregated South shaped a national political leader By Amazon Customer A must-read memoir from one of the most intelligent and charismatic political minds of the 20th century made even more relevant by the recent racial tensions of the 21st century. Many are familiar with Hamilton Jordan's decorated career as Chief of Staff to President Jimmy Carter and his inspirational battles with cancer, but less well known are the boyhood experiences which shaped him into the leader he became. Through graceful, measured editing, Kathleen Jordan gives the reader a ringside seat to her father's coming of age.

By Tom This is a beautifully written history of a very interesting time in the history of America, and the South in particular. I grew up about fifty miles from Albany (Mr Jordan's hometown) and shared many similar experiences. Kathleen Jordan has done a masterful job of editing her late father's memories to produce a very readable and enjoyable memoir.Well done !
