By Mazerine I give Muses 5 stars for idea and concept and 4 plus stars for design, photography and overall quality.Then there is the writing which lowers the star grade back to a 3.What exciting, alluring and provocative women are profiled in this beautiful book, only to have lack-luster treatment in the verbiage. What a cold, stilted and academic presentation we are given in the text. I wish for the exotic and revealing anecdotes that I know must absolutely exist, but were left out. Stories that flesh out the person that is, at heart, the muse.Certainly the book is worth purchasing for its beauty and concept. You'll want to know much more about the subjects and that's no bad thing. That's a very good thing!
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Well conceived book By T. Lawrence I disagree with the other reviews. Muses: Women Who Inspire is extremely well researched and written. It is a fascinating compilation of relevant facts and is extremelyaccurate in its presentation. I found it easy to read and chock full of information that can be followed up by readers who need more fleshing out.The photographs are stunning and they embroider the chapters with memorable images. It is obvious that the writer did enormous and fruitful research.

More a Catalogue for a Museum Show than a Historical Study By Grady Harp Farid Abdelouahab is an art historian and a curator and has put forth a book that could have been a fine catalogue for a museum show focusing on the concept of the Muse in art. It is very rich pictorially, at times probing in content and at other times seems more rich in filler than in depth of fact finding.The Muses in Greek mythology, poetry, and literature, are the goddesses of the inspiration of literature, science and the arts. They were considered the source of the knowledge, related orally for centuries in the ancient culture that was contained in poetic lyrics and myths. In modern English usage, muse (non capitalized but deriving from the classical Muses) can refer in general to a person who inspires an artist, writer, or musician. It is this latter use of the term that the author addresses and dills this impressively created book with photographs of the many women who throughout history have been considered muses to artists.The author goes as far back as the infamous Virginia de Castiglione who was a courtesan in 19th century Italy who entered the court of Napoleon III where she became the mistress of napoleon Iii and was appreciated as `the most beautiful woman in the world'. While her presence justified her reputation, the only artist to whom she has remained attached historically is the photographer Pierre-Louis Pierson who took copious photographs of her both in and out of clothing. Intrigue and fame slowly destroyed her and she died alone, suffering form depression and a persecution complex.This theme is woven through out this book as the author reveals some thirty-odd muses who influence the work of writers, painters and sculptors alike. We learn about Man Ray's infatuation and inspiration from American Lee Miller who after being Man Ray's model went on to become a famous photographer of fashion herself; Nancy Cunard who became a muse to some of the 20th century's most distinguished writers and artists, including Wyndham Lewis, Aldous Huxley, Tristan Tzara, Ezra Pound and Louis Aragon, who were among her lovers, Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, Constantin Brâncuşi, Langston Hughes, Man Ray, and William Carlos Williams. MI5 documents reveal that she was involved with Indian socialist leader VK Krishna Menon. In later years, she suffered from mental illness, and her physical health deteriorated; Dora Maar, a French photographer, poet and painter, best known for being a lover of Pablo Picasso.It is this combination of feminine wiles and art history that makes the book so readable, though in the end the joy of reading MUSES lies in the beautifully reproduced photographs of these mysterious women.
