About the Author Solomon Naumovich Rabinovich, better known under his pen name Sholem Aleichem was a leading Yiddish author and playwright from Ukraine. The musical Fiddler on the Roof, based on his stories about Tevye the Dairyman, was the first commercially successful English-language stage production about Jewish life in Eastern Europe.

Some are emotionally difficult to read, and none are light-hearted fluff. They are fascinating and written by, I feel, a warm-hearted man. I enjoyed them and recommend them for anyone interested in the details of daily living of 19th Century Eastern European Jewish children.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Stories by a master Yiddish writer By Israel Drazin Shalom Aleichem is best known today for the play Fiddler on a Roof. However, he was one of the three best Yiddish and Hebrew writers in the early period of Yiddish and Hebrew short story writing. His stories are frequently humorous because of the somewhat ridiculous manner that he characters act. This book contains twenty of his tales. They were written originally in Yiddish but they were translated by Hannah Berman. The book is free on Amazon. Using the curser in a kindle, a user can bring up any of the tales he or she wants to read.
