The deep redwood canyons and broad grassy ridges of the Santa Cruz Mountains offer a leafy green balm to the nature-starved psyches of cubicle dwellers in nearby San Jose. But a few lucky souls, the rangers, actually get paid to spend their days--their lives--patrolling this last wooded scrap, this island of primeval California. Frances Reneau was determined to join their ranks despite her age and her total lack of previous law-enforcement experience. Her journals from her first decade, on which this book is based, deliver vivid pathos and passion while describing her encounters with parkland denizens--injured wildlife, lost visitors, angry neighbors and ancient redwoods. Unseen and unheard by many visitors, exciting dramas unfold punctuating her long, peaceful, placid days on solo patrol. Welcome to life in green pants!

By Mariko An outstanding and absorbing book about working as a law enforcement officer in the Santa Cruz Mountains Open Space District. People come to public lands for all sorts of reasons, to hike, to see wildlife, and sometimes to abuse the land--that's where the Rangers come in with their mission to protect both land and users. Frances Reneau shows an amazing capacity to see both sides of the issue: when she catches a group of boys trashing a meadow to build a motocross course she thinks it's great for young people to spend time outdoors instead of staring at computer screens, then laments the meadow, churned up by their shovels, the broken land will now fall victim to invasive weeds; native plants and wildlife will not recover for years from the damage. The book shows how selfishly some users of our parks behave, thinking they have the right to drive bicycles down narrow trails at high speeds, dog owners who let their dogs run loose and fail to pick up after them, and even marijuana growers who build plantations on public property and leaving mountains of trash behind. The Rangers constantly try to be everywhere at once, but the size of the area they must patrol means there's always more to be done. The book also includes an account of the training they undergo, the bureaucracy they must endure, the abuse from the public, and the problems of trying to serve conflicting needs of the people who come to the parks. Overall this is a wonderful book which will give you an inside look into Frances Reneau's interesting career.

Adventure stories, solo woman working in the forest By Henk Pechler This autobiography tells how the author, who didn’t like working indoors, decided to become a state park ranger. She made it through training as tough as military boot camp, and encountered many challenges while learning on the job.Now she works mostly solo in the Santa Cruz mountains, patrolling, appreciating nature. But each chapter tells a story of dramatic encounters with nature and fellow humans.

Truth in advertising: I am acquainted with the author and the district. However, that also means I have a pretty good idea of the accuracy of her tales. I like her non-macho, somewhat sympathetic to humans, and definitely interested in wildlife, approach. The book could have used some additional proof-reading. In short chapters on somewhat discrete topics, this is a book that is easy to dip into for a couple of chapters at a time.
